October is Czech Heritage Month in Texas! Labor of Love goes into Kolaches and Noodles
Saturday, August 27, 2016, was a day of kolache-making and noodlemaking in Snook, Texas! More than 30 youth and adult members from SPJST Lodge 9, Snook along with a few visitors who heard about the event on social media joined together to make more than 70 dozen kolaches
and 10 batches of egg noodles. Lydia Faust, Marie Shelfer, and Sharon Kovar provided oversight and guidance on the art of making kolaches while Loree Lewis and James Schoeneman worked with youth on noodles. “Youth learned the labor of love that goes into making both ko-
laches and noodles,” Grace Lewis, who serves as Lodge 9 Youth Club President, says. All items made were sold in the youth club’s annual country store which was held in conjunction with the Snook Volunteer Fireman’s Barbecue on Sunday, August 28. —SPJST—

ive, Love, Life, SPJST! That was the theme of the 2017 Strategic Planning Workshop that SPJST’s officers and directors participated in last week. I attended the two-day meeting and enjoyed the positive energy and ideas that were flowing through the room. The annual workshop was a time to identify and discuss organizational challenges and opportunities and to establish clearly defined growth objectives for 2017 and beyond. The event kicked off with a summer’s end pool party celebration for Home Office staff, officers, and directors and family members at the Residence Inn by Marriott in Temple on Sunday evening. I heard so many great comments about the time spent visiting and getting to know each other. The two-day workshop began on Monday and was divided into six sessions. The first session was an overview of the strategic planning process. This reviewed SPJST’s mission and vision while addressing our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Critical issues/opportunities facing SPJST along with operational and strategic objectives were also discussed. The second session was a review of the American Fraternal Alliance Board Institute Master Class. Topics included What a Board Member Needs to Know; Qualified Management Leadership; Strategic Issues; Enhancing Profitability and Member Service; and Enterprise Risk Management/Risk Committees. Progress on the development of the new SPJST website was shared during the third session. The five
SPJST departments - fraternal, sales/marketing, investments/mortgage lending; finance/accounting; and communication - presented a review of 2016 departmental objectives. The final session was reviewing the five-year business plan and outlining steps and targets to achieve goals. I enjoyed the workshop and the discussions, and I look forward to the many exciting opportunities that SPJST’s future holds. It’s a great time to be a member of SPJST. Please invite your family members, neighbors, and friends to join today!

Scholarship recipient expresses thanks
Dear SPJST, I wish to thank you for selecting me as the recipient of a 2016 SPJST Scholarship. I am greatful your organization deemed me worthy of the award. In the fall, I will be attending Oregon State University, located in Corvallis, Oregon. I will be staying on their beautiful campus in Weatherford Hall. The dorm is located centrally on campus and was established in 1920. College is a time of change, where we say goodbye to the old and usher in the new. I have been accepted to Oregon State University School of Business and will attend as a freshman for the 2016 fall term. My parents and grandparents have college degrees; I share their views on the importance of higher education. I am majoring in the field of business management and minor in agricultural studies. With my studies, I plan to acquire a management position, preferably with an investment company. I also intend to continue my involvement with our family ranch, if from a distance. College is rife with expenses, from tuition, to books, and dining. It is the generosity of organizations such as this one which makes it possible for individuals such as myself to attend college with an increased sense of security. I am very greatful for your investment in my future success, and will honor it through my actions. This scholarship will be used to pay for part of my tuition for either the fall or winter term. Anything remaining will be reinvested into textbooks. I look forward to my time at Oregon State University. I plan on not only involving myself in education, but also in extracurricular activities to continue to develop into a well-rounded gentleman. Again, thank you for accepting me for a 2016 SPJST Scholarship. I am incredibly grateful for the support you have given me. Thank you, Dmitri Anglin Lodge 189 Bryan-College Station —SPJST—

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi supports Texas Czechs: Rooted in Tradition
The nonprofit organization PolkaWorks is pleased to announce the next showing of its multimedia exhibition Texas Czechs: Rooted in Tradition, supported by sponsorship from SPJST Lodge 79, Corpus Christi. The exhibition will be on display in Corpus Christi at the La Retama Central Library from October 10, 2016, through February 2017. Exhibition co-producers are Texas Czechs Lori Najvar and Dawn Orsak. Dawn is a member of SPJST Lodge 187, Round Rock. Czech culture has played an instrumental role in shaping the iconic Texas landscape, and its sights, sounds, and tastes can still be found throughout Texas on any given day. Like many immigrant groups, Czechs brought dance, food, music, language, and other cultural traditions with them. The Texas Czech community maintains and passes on its sense of identity by continuing to practice those traditions and creating some particular to Texas Czechs. Texas Czechs: Rooted in Tradition highlights these activities on photo montage panels, presenting a contemporary picture of the diversity and richness of Texas Czech culture today. It also includes photographs, artifacts, and short documentary films. Topics include taroky, music, language, community celebrations, food, Sokol, and
more. There are two public programs planned in conjunction with the exhibition: a music program (panel discussion and demo) on Saturday, November 12 featuring members of the Leo Majek Orchestra; and a crosscultural panel discussion about food traditions on the Gulf Coast in January (date to be determined.) La Retama Central Library is located at 805 Comanche Street in Corpus Christi, Texas 78401. For hours and directions, call the library at 361826-7055 or visit http://www.cclibraries.com. Texas Czechs: Rooted in Tradition is made possible in part with major funding from Humanities Texas, KJZT-Catholic Family Fraternal of Texas, KJT-Catholic Union of Texas, and individual sponsors. Additional local Corpus Christi sponsors include the Czech Heritage Society of South Texas, Moravian Hall, Randy Sykora Home Repair, and generous individuals. PolkaWorks’ mission is to highlight unique cultural traditions through documentaries, photography, and public programs designed to educate and inspire. Lodge 84, Dallas seeks dancers for State Fair
Dear Readers A beseda memorial performance for Bessie Petr will be at the State Fair of Texas on Sunday, October 16, 2016. As the State Fair approaches, it is also time to think of Beseda and Beseda practices. In honor of the late longtime Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Leader Bessie Petr, we are trying to get in touch with
everyone who Bessie had taught the Beseda, to perform one more time at the Fair. Bessie served as youth leader for 64 years and taught the traditional Beseda to generation among generations of children, teens, adults, and the elderly. Please consider dancing at this year’s Fair on Sunday, October 16 for “Mama Bessie.” We can always bring back the memories of our practices, acting silly, goofy, acting as if we don’t know it to get out of dancing, or, of course, the serious practice!

Lodge 133 San Antonio reports on July meeting
Pictured, left to right, are Carol Havemann of Lodge 88, Houston Bingo Committee; Lakita Combs, Principal; Kristina Havemann, teacher; Allie Martin, Assistant Principal; and Stacey Vaglienty, Assistant Principal.
Have you heard the expression, “If kids don’t learn the way we teach them, teach them the way they learn”? Kristina Havemann is a second grade teacher at Metzler Elementary in Klein ISD, and the SPJST Lodge 88 Bingo Committee has awarded her a $1,000 donation to reach this goal.. Kristina is implementing flexible seating in her classroom this school year, which is a change in the mindset of the traditional seating chart with tables and chairs. Flexible seating includes burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increasing motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. Physical
activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. Kristina has a few traditional tables and chairs in her classroom but with the help of the Bingo Committee, she has added wobble stools, yoga cushion seats, small scoop seated rockers, and a video rocker, along with books to go along with tribes’ activities and visual learning. The Bingo Committee is excited to help Kristina have a classroom of happy kids, who are actively engaged in a relaxed, student-centered room with open collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. —SPJST—

Members of Lodge 133, San Antonio met in July. President Jarolyn Popp and Secretary-Treasurer Vicki Reese discussed the events of the SPJST Convention held in Killeen, Texas. The convention was well-organized. One of the most important jobs of the delegates was the decisions which involved separating the by-laws from the operations manual. The delegates addressed this task with fidelity. The Vestnik has addressed the proceedings of the convention in detail. We are excited to welcome Hiram Dixon as the vice president of SPJST in charge of insurance and sales. He was a fraternal field manager for Districts Two and Seven so he is very familiar with SPJST and is dedicated to seeing the Society grow and prosper. We are also happy to see our other Supreme Lodge Officers and Editor/Director of Communication returning to their positions. District Seven continues to be honored with having Bob Bayer remain our District Seven Director.

The meeting of the Friendship Club was held on Wednesday, September 7, 2016, in St. Thomas Parish Dining Room. The meeting was called to order by President Margaret Sears, and she welcomed everyone. Guests were Connie and Roy Bailey and Virginia Campos, friends of Lola Taylor, and Jerry and Henrietta Milan, friends of Libbie Vrla. It seems that Jerry and Henrietta know lots of our members and even knew the friend of Lola’s. Glad to have you all, and come back again. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all. In the absence of Secretary Mary Ann Krivanek, it was voted to dispense with the reading of the minutes from the previous meeting since we have a guest speaker. Mary Ann had asked Libbie to take notes of this meeting, however, we will arrive later. Treasurer Jo Ann Wilcox gave the financial report which was approved as presented. The president discussed the guidelines and asked if anyone had suggestions or comments. It was discussed if anyone joins midyear should they pay prorated dues. Extending time to pay games was also discussed. Following, it was voted to leave the guidelines as they currently state.

Lola and Rose Ann were thanked for all the sunflower table decorations, and Barbara Becknell was thanked for giving each person present a small pot with a sunflower. Lola reported she is trying to get an entertainer for our Halloween meeting. We heard last month that it is an Elvis impersonator, but we may also be surprised. It was voted that each group of table ladies decorate their own tables in the Halloween theme, and Lola promised a prize to the winning table. In November, Lola will bring supplies and will teach all to make Christmas ornaments. Margaret thanked Lupe Esparza and all her helpers for the great job
they did as hostesses. Debbie Skrasek and Libbie Vrla will be October hostesses. Margaret reported the board will be acting hostesses in December. Also the president stated a nominating committee will be appointed in October, and elections will be held in November. The new slate of officers begin their duties in January. Sunshine Person Marie Keller reported she did not send any cards during the month. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to September celebrants - Mary Ann Krivanek, Paula Hall, and Libbie Vrla. May you all have many more. The 50/50 dollar games were won
by Libbie Vrla and Betty Krenek. We had seven door prizes. Thanks, ladies, for your donations as we had seven happy winners. Lola introduced Judith Pickering, program coordinator of the Alzheimer’s Association, who gave a presentation. She discussed the 10 signs of early detection. We were pleased to learn that sometimes what we think is an early sign is simply a typical age-related change. Judith’s presentation was enjoyed by all and was very informative. Thank you, Lola, for arranging this program. There will be a Memory Walk on September 27 in Burleson and on October

Pamphlets were distributed on “Know the 10 Signs” and “Legal Plans – Assisting a person with Dementia in Planning for the Future.” Margaret read a story which was enjoyed by all. Since there was no further business to discuss, the meeting adjourned, grace was said, and a great fried chicken lunch was enjoyed along with all the other wonderful side dishes. Then games were enjoyed. A good time was had by all. News On Lydia Alholm’s monthly trip to

WinStar this time, she said she brought home her biggest winnings of the year. Congratulations! Do you need any help in going to the bank? Helen Skrasek went to Oklahoma recently for a week. Great-grandson Sebastian, who lives in Berlin, Germany, was in Oklahoma for a week so Helen’s son Ron his wife LeAnne, and Helen drove to Tulsa on a Saturday to spend the day with him. Sebastian turned 16 on August 11, is 6 feet, 2 inches tall, and Helen said they had a great day – took him shopping and had lunch and dinner together. Helen said that she has not seen him for three years so she made him some kolaches at Ron’s house on Friday as he likes the fruit ones, but loves the poppyseed, too. She said the whole day was wonderful! Sympathy goes out to Helen and her sister Adele Strand of Waco on the loss of Adele’s daughter-in-law, Rhonda Janak of Katy, Texas, on August 13. Rhonda was married to Adele’s oldest son, Larry. Members, as you will recall, Adele and husband Harold Strand entertained the Friendship Club a couple of years ago. Harold played the accordion while Adele, in her Czech kroj, sang. I recall it being a most enjoyable program. Helen’s granddaughter Stephanie Myers from Tennessee, lost her fatherin-law Dr. Bill Myers (age 87), and the memorial service was held in Oklahoma during the week she was there. She said it was so nice to see Stephanie, her husband Knick, and children Sara and Ella. She also got to see Knick’s two brothers and their families: Noah lives in Tennessee and Will lives in Florida. She said it was a
blessing to see all of them. The Skrasek reunion will be held on September 17 - again at SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth on the lodge’s Czech Heritage Day. The reunion was held there last year, and it proved to be so enjoyable for everyone. Harold Strand and Dave Hooten will be entertaining during the early afternoon. Helen’s great-granddaughter Jaycie Skrasek can’t wait to do the cake walk! Jaycie is the daughter of Michelle and Steven Skrasek and granddaughter of Debbie (Nana) and Gary (Pop-Pop) Skrasek. The next meeting will be October 5. Don’t forget your dish for lunch and Halloween table decorations. See you then. So Until, Keep Smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

The Small
Here lies this little rock upon this little walk which goes into the woods before it comes to stop Over the rock a leaf under the leaf a worm next to the worm an ant each at their work in turn
Who would think all this occurs overlooked and soon forgot beneath us sentient beings which God has surely wrought Why look to see the small our eyes are always higher but oh what we could learn if underfoot we would inquire Give pause then if you may each rock each fallen leaf holds more than we can see life is teeming underneath
Are we not also small yet smallness can inspire in so large a universe each of us part of the entire. © davidknape —SPJST—

Učme se Česky Let us Study Czech Lekce čtrnactá Lesson 14
Rules of Spelling and Punctuation
The Czech alphabet possesses the ability of rendering the quantity of vowels by the use of the čárka, and the palatal sound of the three consonants, ď, ť, and g.
To further increase the number of sounds and letters, the háček or caret is used for some hushing sounds:
s—š c—č z—ž r—ř
As indicated previously, the following are hard consonants — d, t, n, h, ch, k, and r. If these hard consonants are followed by the pIt bIt sound, the sound must be spelled with a y or ý, thus: kdyby (byl) týden žádný hybny chytrý kytice rytíř
* * * * *
The soft consonants are ď, ť, ň, ž, š, č, ř, and c and j. If these are followed by the ee (bee, see) sound, the sound must be spelled with an i or í. Words with i or í in their root are in the vast majority:
★
Lidskost
Česká
HUMANITY
Bratrství
VĚSTNÍK
★
Část
Slovanská Podporující Jednota Státu Texas
Uředni orgán SPJST ★ Založené roku 1897
dívat ticho ničitel živý šíti číslo řízek cizinec Jiskra

The neutral consonants b, p, v, f, m, l, s, and z are follwed by either i, í, or y, ý, according to their origin or derivation. When you add a prefix before words like účel, the long ú is retained: bezúčelný.
Example: Karel Dvořák, Wilsonovo nádraží, Dunaj, Angličan, Čechy, Smetanova opera, “Prodaná nevěsta”, etc., and Naše římskokatolická cirkev; Veliká slovanská podporujíci jednota.

Here are Other Important Points in Spelling:
Use of Capital Letters
Pronouns and possessive adjectives of the polite-formal usage are capitalized, as are those of the familiar-informal usage. The polite form is capitalized only when referring to a group (plural) then the pronouns are not capitalized. Vy, Vám, Váš; Ty, Tvůj, Tobě. The latter are always in caps.
Example: Yesterday was Wednesday, July 14, 1963. Včera byla středa, 14 července 1963.
A common error made is when the formal Vy, Vás, Vám are used. A plural verb is used, although only one person is being addressed. Do not use a plural verb unless you are speaking to more than one person.
* * * * *
There is a difference in the usage of capital letters in Czech and English.
* * * * *
Consequently, days of the week and month are not capitalized. Note also that a simple period is used after the date.
* * * * *
Proper nouns — names of persons, places, things, nations, etc. titles of books, films (but not religious bodies or organizations), etc. take capitals. Capitals are not used for emphasis or for news headlines in Czech. On the whole, the use of capital letters is rather restricted in Czech.
* * * * *
Wrong: Vy, (one person) jste včera jeli do města.
Right: Vy jste jel do města.
* * * * *
The pronoun já is not capitalized. Neither do we capitalize adjectives and adverbs indicating nationality. (This is done in English.) Example: Mám česku ženu. — I have a Czech wife. Mluvíme česky. — We speak Czech.

Punctuation marks are the same in Czech as in English. (See also Lesson 5.) tečka(.) čárka(,) vykričnik(!) uvozovací( ) středník(;) dvojtečka(:) pomlčka(—) Otázník(?) znaménka(“ “) závorky( ) rozdělováci znaměnko(-)
* * * * *
One big difference in English and Czech punctuation has to do with the use of commas. Commas are used:
—before and after a relative clause: Ztrátil jsem knihu, kterou mi dál.
—before and after a noun clause: Je dobře, že tomu rozumíš.
—before and after an adjective clause: Všechen cukr, všechna káva. —before and after an adverbial clause: Jakmile mě uviděl, šel pryč.
* * * * *
Finally, quotation marks are always preceded by a colon. In Czech, the first quotation marks are on the line, not inverted, and are inverted at the end of the quotation. The trend in the United States is to use the standard English quotation marks — “ ” .
Example: Otec řekl synovi: “Pokračuj a uč se!” —SPJST—

Genealogists to offer free services for families of Czech immigrants
Genealogists Danny Leshikar of Liberty, Missouri and Richard Lesikar of Granbury, Texas, will offer free help for descendants of Czech immigrants looking for information about their families. “We will help people begin building a family tree or add to their own information,” said Richard Lesikar. “We will not post this information to social media or on websites such as Ancestry.com,” he said. Danny Leshikar presently has a database of more than 81,000 entries which includes names, information, and photographs. He and Richard Lesikar use this information to build family trees at no cost. “We are blessed that some Czech genealogists such as Edmund Hejl, Albert Blaha, Jim and Mildred (Skrabanek) Hejl had the foresight to gather, translate, and publish information of our Czech heritage,” said Richard Lesikar. “These people, who are now all deceased, helped lay the foundation for Danny’s work.” The two genealogists will be in Temple from October 4 to October 10 and are taking appointments now. “We’d love to have the opportunity to visit you in your home, share the data, and/or photographs Danny has of your family and at the same time gather data that are missing from your family tree,” said Richard Lesikar. They will also meet participants at the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple if that is more convenient. For appointments and more information, contact Richard Lesikar at rlesikar@charter.net or call 682-9366034. —SPJST—
