Lodge 41, Port Lavaca Donates Land to County for Fire Department By Kayla Meyer Port Lavaca Wave September 6, 2016

Auction Time!

SPJST Foundation President Brian Vanicek, right, receives the donation of an early 1970s Oliver tractor from Ken and Gay Revel of SPJST Lodge 97, Placedo. The tractor will be one of the items available in the SPJST Foundation “Clean Out Your Barn” auction this Saturday, October 8 at 9 a.m. on the front grounds of Budget Wrench-A-Part, 4497 US Highway 190 in Belton. Everyone is invited to the auction! More information on page 3.

The Six Mile community (near Port Lavaca, Texas in Calhoun County) recently celebrated a land donation to the Six Mile Volunteer Fire Department. SPJST Lodge 41, Port Lavaca donated approximately two acres of vacant land located at the northwest corner of Farm-to-Market 1090 and Royal Road to Six Mile VFD at a ceremony held across the road at the Six Mile Assembly of God Church. SPJST are the initials of the Czech pronunciation of the organization, which is Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas. Translated to English, it means

Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas, President Brian Vanicek said. Franklin Jurek, president of Lodge 41, welcomed those who attended the event, including elected county officials, Six Mile VFD members and firefighters, SPJST members, and many from the community. Pastor Johnny Kisiah opened the ceremony with a prayer. “It’s a blessing to be here with you in Six Mile, and it’s a great advantage to us to have the fire station right across from the church,” Kisiah said. “We are so thankful and grateful for this exchange of land, and we’re just going to pray that the Lord will bless it.” Jurek told attendees the history of the land.

appy Czech Heritage Month! My favorite Czech proverb that I follow probably a little too much is “The more one sleeps, the less one lives” because sleep is definitely overrated in my world! In honor of the month, here are some more Czech proverbs: In life we sometimes laugh, in life we sometimes cry.

I believe in what I hold in my hand. When food tastes its finest, stop eating.

Health is the greatest treasure.

The one who gives teaches others to be generous.

Even little things have their value. Cleanliness is a priority, even if you don’t have money for salt.

Praise is a spur to the good, and a thorn to the lazy.

Lost time never returns.

Celebrating 50 Years of Service This Friday, October 7 from 3 to 5 p.m. is a big celebration at the SPJST Home Office in Temple! We are celebrating SPJST Chief Financial Officer Leonard Mikeska and his 50 years of dedicated service to SPJST. We invite you to join us at the come-and-go reception (more information is on page 3). Brother Leonard joins Dorothy Tomasek, Jerry Mikulas, and Dorothy Stuchly as employees who have achieved 50 years of service to SPJST. Still to Come Stay tuned to the Vestnik for scenes from Lodge 79, Corpus Christi youth activities; State Royalty’s appearance at the Kolache Festival in Caldwell; and District One Youth’s participation in the Burleson County Fair Parade. —SPJST—

Fall Fun Days District fall fun days began in September. Remember, the meetings are fun events. All business should be limited to emergency issues only. What a great time to meet fellow members in your district, renew old acquaintances, and make new ones. Dates for the fall fun days are: District One—Sunday, October 9 Lodge 186, Caldwell District Three—Sunday, October 23 Lodge 25, Ennis District Six—Sunday, November 6 St. Mary’s Catholic Church Parish Hall at 1648 FM 340, Hallettsville, - hosted by Lodge 4, Hallettsville and Lodge 63, Sweet Home District Seven—Sunday, November 13 Lodge 107, Floresville

Plan to Observe Czech Heritage Month in Texas October is Czech Heritage Month. That is something to consider if you are looking for an enjoyable theme for your October meeting. Here is an idea: How about hosting a covered dish social at your October meeting with an emphasis on Czech food? Many good, traditional and modern recipes can be found in the SPJST cookbooks. In addition, regarding Czech Heritage Month, good times can be found for those who travel to the State Fair of Texas in Dallas on Sunday, October

16. That is Heritage Day, and once again, SPJST lodges in the Dallas-Fort Worth area will be represented by their members at the celebration, which takes place just inside the entrance to Fair Park. The SPJST Home Office will have a presence at this year’s Heritage Day celebration, and we invite you to come meet with us.

Officers’ Elections The end of another year is rapidly approaching. Many lodges have had a very productive and successful year. This is the time of year when lodges across the state will be electing leaders for the coming year. Has your lodge moved forward? Has your lodge met all of its goals? Has your lodge completed all of its projects planned for the year in your community? Has your lodge set goals for 2017? Keeping this in mind may help you make choices on who you will elect to keep your lodge moving forward in the coming year. It is the duty of all members to provide the leaders of their lodge with suggestions, ideas, and assistance. When asked to assist with activities throughout the year, please help your lodge officers. Fraternalism works best when every member is involved in the process. While lodges are electing new officers, this would also be an excellent time to check the back page of the

Vestnik for your meeting date and time. Many lodges are not listed. This would be an excellent time to get the information listed. If any of this information has changed, please contact Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny at 800-7277578 and have her update your lodge information.

Texas Czech Festivals, Heritage Fest and Muziky Mark your calendars for Heritage Fest and Muziky on Saturday, October 15 at Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, Texas. Entertainment will be music, antique farm equipment, train rides for kids, kolache eating contest, arts and crafts, and much more. This will take place in the Czech Village around the museum.

Heritage Day at the State Fair Of Texas The festival will start Sunday, October 16 at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas. SPJST lodges in the DallasFort Worth area will be represented by their members at the celebration, which takes place at the African American Museum inside the fairgrounds. The SPJST Home Office will also have a welcome station set up at this year’s Heritage Day celebration, and we invite you to come out for a good time!

100 Pennies Scholarship Drive Starts October 1 Everyone spread the word! October 1 starts the SPJST 100 Pennies Drive to benefit the scholarship fund. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive will run through March 31, 2017.

SPJST Foundation Clean Out Your House! SPJST Foundation’s second sponsored event will raise funds that will benefit the SPJST Education and Nature Center and Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center. The Clean Out Your House event will be a district auction, and 100 percent of all tax-deductible proceeds benefit both

Lodge 84, Dallas seeks dancers for State Fair

Dear Readers A beseda memorial performance for Bessie Petr will be at the State Fair of Texas on Sunday, October 16, 2016. As the State Fair approaches, it is also time to think of Beseda and Beseda practices. In honor of the late longtime Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Leader Bessie Petr, we are trying to get in touch with everyone who Bessie had taught the Beseda, to perform one more time at the Fair. Bessie served as youth leader for 64 years and taught the traditional Beseda to generation among generations of children, teens, adults, and the elderly. Please consider dancing at this year’s Fair on Sunday, October 16 for Mama Bessie. We can always bring back the memories of our practices, acting silly, goofy, acting as if we don’t know it to get out of dancing, or, of course, the serious practice! It will be a lot of fun to get back together with each other just one more time and know that Bessie would be

smiling at us as we dance. It was always her pride and joy to see how many circles she could get to dance at the Fair. You can contact me (Lynda Novak) at 972-948-4456 or Larry Petr II (P2) at 469-279-7387 or contact us on Facebook. Let’s just do it for Mama Bessie! Fraternally yours, Lynda Novak —SPJST—

Crickets

By Wizzie Brown, BCE Extension Program Specialist - IPM Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service

Field crickets are a common sight around homes in late summer into autumn. These insects are about 1” long when fully grown. Crickets are dark brown to black with large hind legs used for jumping. They also have two cerci, or appendages that come off the tip of the abdomen. Female crickets have a large swordlike structure, the ovipositor, protruding from the tip of the abdomen. The ovipositor is used to deposit eggs into soil. Crickets feed on plant material as well as other insects. They are able to cause damage to seedlings, and some-

times large populations can be destructive. Large masses of dead crickets around doorways or other areas can be distasteful to view and cause a foul odor. Field crickets are primarily outdoor insects, but may occasionally venture indoors. When crickets do come indoors, they may bother residents with their chirping. Males chirp to attract a mate creating the sound by rubbing their forewings together. Cricket management is more easily accomplished in the summer when nymphs, who cannot fly, are present. Unfortunately, this usually isn’t when large populations of crickets are discovered. Before turning to pesticides to manage your cricket problems, try these ideas: • Turn off outside lights at night or use bulbs that are less attractive to insects • Seal cracks and crevices where insects can enter with sealant

• Remove debris stacked near the structure • Keep lawn and surrounding areas mowed

• Stuff weep holes with copper mesh

Land Donation

Continued from Page 1.

The land, which the lodge acquired in the early 1900s, has sat vacant since 1999. The local lodge, which has approximately 45 members with 10 to 15 of those still in the Port Lavaca area, began in 1904 in Calhoun County, and in 1906, the lodge received the property by donation, Jurek said. In the 1940s, two lodge halls were built on the property, one in 1942 and the other five years later after a hurricane destroyed the first. Another hurricane wrecked the second hall, and it was finally torn down in 1999. “It’s been vacant ever since then,” Jurek said. “Our lodge is so small there’s no way we can possibly afford to build a new lodge hall and maintain it with insurance and utilities and everything we have. We’ve been discussing this for about two years now about utilizing it for the fire department.” At first, the lodge attempted to lease the property to the county, but due to insurance regulations, the county was unable to use the property. Earlier this year, Lyssy approached Jurek about acquiring the property, Jurek said. Jurek approached the lodge members and officials about donating the property since leasing was not an option for the county. “We had our annual lodge member-

ship appreciation dinner and social on February 9. At that meeting, I presented the idea to donate the property. The lodge members were very much in favor of it so we decided at that time that we’d donate it to the county. It was donated to us, so we figured that we, in turn, would donate it to the county,” Jurek said. “We never dropped the subject. We kind of put it on hold,” Jurek added. The Six Mile VFD, Jurek said, needed a home to keep the fire trucks out of the elements. The official transaction between the county and the lodge closed early last month, Jurek said. “We’ve been through all the paperwork. This is not really a handing over of a deed or anything. That’s all been done. The closing was the first part of

this month where we actually transferred the deed to the county,” Jurek said. “It is now county property, and hopefully, we’ll get some progress going on this.” The fire department hopes to start work on the land before the end of the year, Jurek said. The building will be funded through donations and with the help of the county, said County Commissioner Precinct 2 Vern Lyssy. “On behalf of Calhoun County, we want to thank SPJST Lodge 41 members for allowing this land transaction. We greatly appreciate it,” Lyssy said, adding that Commissioners’ Court is committed to helping the project reach its completion. “This station should be a focal point of the community for years to come.” Jon Amimo, current chief of Six Mile

VFD, also extended his appreciation for the land donation. “All the members work as a team to help the community to protect property. Most of the time, it’s probably not a good time for you, but we’ll be there for you,” Amimo said. “Again, we’d like to thank you so much for the property. By donating this, we will have a home for our station instead of operating out of the county barn.” Vanicek said giving back to the community is a hallmark of SPJST. “We have 42,000 members statewide. Members contributed more that 101,000 charitable hours last year, and more than $324,000 in actual cash gifts and donations. It just really adds up,” Vanicek said, “to nearly half million charitable hours in four years and $1.6 million in actual gifts to community projects just like this - either gifts in kind or in actual cash donations.” “It’s an impressive organization, not just because of the life insurance, but because of what it does for the living,” Vanicek added. “The organization is about doing good. It’s that simple. Doing good for each other and the communities we serve, again, through the sale of life insurance but then through projects just like this.”

In Memory of Rudolph Darilek

Rudolph Victor Darilek was born during a rare snowfall just north of Shiner, Texas, on December 7, 1921, the oldest child of Ludmila Svoboda Darilek and Herman Darilek. He passed away in Houston on September 8, 2016, at age 94. Rudy was raised in Moulton and attended Baursville Gram- Rudolph Darilek mar School. Afterwards, he ran “three miles straightaway” daily to attend Moulton High School, sometimes twice a day as he would return to the farm for chores before going back to school for basketball and other school activities. After graduation in1939, he hitched a ride on an egg truck to travel to Houston and work “for a little while” in the grocery business. He met his wife Celestine Veselka during a Paul Jones at the old SPJST Lodge 88, Houston and adored her instantly. They were married on Thanksgiving Day in 1942. He served our country at the Pacific front in World War II as a member of the 5th Engine Overhaul Squadron, 27th Air Depot Group in the US Army Air Corps. Afterwards, he returned to the grocery business at JMH Supermarkets where he stayed for 67 years and announced every working morning, “I’m off to the races!” He and Celestine raised their large family in Houston in West University Place, but continued to farm the family homestead in Baursville. He was the proud patriarch of 106 family members, calling his beloved wife “Beep,” his eight children his “Popos,” his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren “Dolls” and “Cowboys.” He claimed that beef was the key to a long life, and this, plus his optimistic nature, served him well. Humor and music filled his home especially with his surprise gifts at Christmastime. He loved teaching his children about integrity, honesty, and

truth through his farming activities and stories. His favorite pastimes included polka dancing with his wife and all their relatives and friends, fishing and trips to the country with his brother-in-law Quentin, watching sports with his family, and spending time on the farm “raising cattle and kids.” He was a hard worker, was proud of his Czech heritage, was dedicated to his grocery business, and devoted to all of his family members. His kindness and generosity will be remembered for generations. Rudy is preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife of 72 years, Celestine; newborn son Robert; daughter Joyce Lynn Stevenson; brother Milton Darilek and his wife Ethel Darilek; and sister Venice Darilek Kouba. Survivors include children Rose Rohlfing, Jo Ann Dunlavy and husband Rick, Henry Darilek and wife Genie, Cora Nowak and husband Ted, son-in-law Terry Stevenson, Marjorie Nowak and husband Mike, David Darilek and wife Nan, and Thomas Darilek and wife Debbie; grandchildren Erica Rohlfing, Jonathan Rohlfing, Geoffrey Rohlfing and wife Laura, Tiffany Robinson and husband Evan, Brian Dunlavy, Carolyn Hubbell and husband Rob, Russell Dunlavy and wife Kelley, Sarah Parrish and husband Collis, Rachel Stice and husband Tanner, Daniel Darilek, Emily Darilek, Matt Nowak and wife Allison, Julie Granger and husband John, Mark Nowak and wife KC, Valerie Schell and husband Steven, Kathryn Nowak, Scott Stevenson and wife Beth, Charles Stevenson and wife Laura, Rebecca Stevenson, Elaine Riepe and husband Tim, Shelly Siler and husband Austin, Shirley Dees and husband Jordan, Randy Stevenson, Barbara Stevenson, Phillip Nowak and wife Carrie, Kevin Nowak and wife Katie, Tracy Nowak, Justin Nowak and wife Brenna, Jennifer Miller and husband Ray, Amy Hunter and husband Ben, Donna Darilek, Sandra Wallace and husband Michael, Dylan Darilek, Ryland Darilek, and Brenna Darilek; great-grandchildren Greta and Heidi Rohlfing, Luke Dunlavy, Jayden, Jared, and Jonah Hubbell, Reese Parrish, Reagan Stice, Carter, Anna Kate, and Ryan Nowak, Wells, Alex, and Gavin Granger, Ella,

Rudy was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church of Houston and SPJST Lodge 88, Houston. He served as a lodge delegate for many years and was called upon many times to interpret and translate the correct grammar in Czech for SPJST. Visitation and rosary recitation were held Sunday, September 11 at St. Vincent’s in Houston. Funeral mass was celebrated Tuesday, September 13 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Moulton with Father Gabriel officiating. Hymns were led by Gussie Machalec and spiritual Czech songs were sung by Rudy and Bea Patek, accompanied by organist Sharon Etlinger. A military salute was provided by American Legion Post No. 392 of Moulton. Burial followed in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The family requests that donations be made in Rudy’s name to SPJST Lodge 88 Scholarship Fund, 1435 Beall Street, Houston, Texas 77008; St. Joseph Catholic Church, Moulton, Texas; or a charity of your choice. State Youth Director shares October updates

October is here, and that means it is Czech Heritage Month. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the Czech culture and heritage. Czech people are all about family, and that includes your SPJST family! Thanks to those SPJST lodges that have been hosting Czech heritage celebrations in the weeks leading up to this special month and to those who have events planned for Czech Heritage Month. Many of these events consist of a fabulous Czech meal that is enjoyed by all. This is a great opportunity to stress the importance of planning a meal with your family on a regular basis, whether that be SPJST family or your immediate family. SPJST State Royalty will be at the State Fair in Dallas on Sunday, October 16 starting at 10 a.m. This coincides with Heritage Festival 2016 and is sponsored by Texas Cultural Partnership. There will be beseda dancers, music, food, and lots of fun. Please come to the State Fair and join our SPJST State Royalty Court. If you can’t make it to the State Fair, there are other Czech events and museums around the state you can visit. Please see the Vestnik for more information on these events. The 2016-2017 State Royalty Court made their first public appearance at Westfest in West on Labor Day weekend. Westfest is a celebration of Czech heritage and culture held annually in the Central Texas town of West. Royalty Court members rode in the parade and also made an appearance in the Cultural Amphitheater. District Two

Beseda Dancers did a great job dancing again this year at Westfest. Thanks to Districts Two and Three members who rode on the float in the Westfest parade. The very next weekend, the State Royalty Court had an opportunity to attend the Caldwell Kolache Festival. District One Royalty and State Royalty Courts were introduced to the crowd followed by a performance from Lodge 9, Snook and Lodge 17, New Tabor Beseda dancers.

Genealogists to to host October 6 open house at Temple Czech Heritage Museum

The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center will hold a special open house from 1 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, October 6, 2016, at 119 West French Avenue in Temple. The purpose of the open house is to identify persons in photographs of Bell County community, school, and parochial groups. Richard Lesikar of Granbury will bring enlarged prints of more than 50 images of local groups. “We are hoping there are members of the community who either can help identify the persons in these photos, or who will bring their own photographs, which give us vital clues and information,” said Lesikar. Lesikar volunteers, along with genealogist Danny Leshikar of Liberty, Missouri, in helping families begin their family tree or fill in missing information. The two specialize in Czech immigrants, but this may include immigrants who self-identified as Austrian, Moravian, Bohemian or Slovak. The two genealogists will be in Temple from October 4 to October 10 and are taking appointments now. “We’d love to have the opportunity to visit you in your home, share the data and or photographs Danny has of your family and at the same time gather data that are missing from your family tree,” said Richard Lesikar. They will also meet participants at the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple if that is more convenient.
