Czech Life

The whole idea of creating this work of art came about through a photography class at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. The final class project was taking six photos with one theme. I wanted to create something unique that expressed what I was happy to have in my life and proud to always carry with me. I

started thinking about photographs to capture that would express this. The Czech flag was the first thing that came to mind since that is my heritage and how my family got its start here in America. My greatgrandfather arrived on a ship with just his siblings to start a new life. The flag signifies what the Czech culture means to me and how important it is to keep the traditions that we were taught alive. The next photo is of polka music. 24-year-old boy seeing out from the train’s window shouted . . . “Dad, look, the trees are going behind!” Dad smiled, and a young couple sitting nearby looked at the 24-yearold’s childish behavior with pity. Suddenly, the boy again exclaimed, “Dad, look the clouds are running with us!” The couple couldn’t resist and said to the old man . . . “Why don’t you take your son to a good doctor?” The old man smiled and said . . . “I did, and we are just coming from the hospital. My son was blind from birth, he just got his eyes today.” Every single person on the planet has a story. The truth behind the story may surprise us. —Author Unknown
Your Texas Driver License This was news to me and is something all Texans should know! Your Texas driver license has a phone number on the back—just above the bar code on the lower right side: 1-800-525-5555. This is the DPS Stranded Motorist Hotline. This toll-free number was established in 1989 to get help to motorists whose vehicles are disabled on state and federal roads in Texas. The number is printed on the back of all Texas driver licenses and ID cards, and is for motorists to use when reporting a need for nonemergency assistance. It is not a substitute for 9-1-1, and it is not a customer service line to answer driver license questions or other routine matters for other divisions of DPS. It is for motorists who have a
legitimate need for assistance on Texas roadways. Despite what some email chains say, motorists who call the toll-free number are not provided a free yearly tow or a free voucher for fuel. The hotline is answered at DPS Austin Communications by operators who take necessary information from motorists. The information is then relayed to the appropriate police agency that will provide help or send a unit to check on the motorist’s welfare until help arrives. Examples of when a motorist may call the hotline include stranded with car problems; hazardous road conditions; debris in the roadway; suspicious activity at a rest area; obviously intoxicated or dangerous drivers.
Texas Polka News Thanks Vrazels’ Polka Band was honored with the dedication of a pavilion in Marak, Texas, on September 11. Photos from the dedication appeared on page 10 of the September 28 Vestnik. Lodge 84, Dallas members to dance at State Fair Lodge 84, Dallas: this Sunday calling all beseda Dear Readers A beseda memorial performance dancers!
for Bessie Petr will be at the State Fair of Texas this Sunday, October 16, 2016. As the State Fair approaches, it is also time to think of beseda and beseda practices. In honor of the late longtime Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Leader Bessie Petr, we are trying to get in touch with everyone who Bessie had taught the beseda, to perform one more time at the Fair. Bessie served as youth leader for 64 years and taught the traditional beseda to generation among generations of children, teens, adults, and the elderly. Please consider dancing at this year’s Fair on Sunday, October 16 for Mama Bessie. We can always bring back the memories of our practices, acting silly, goofy, acting as if we don’t know it to get out of dancing, or, of course, the serious practice! It will be a lot of fun to get back together with each other just one more time and know that Bessie would be smiling at us as we dance. It was always her pride and joy to see how many circles she could get to dance at the Fair. You can contact me (Lynda Novak) at 972-948-4456 or Larry Petr II (P2) at 469-279-7387 or contact us on Facebook. Let’s just do it for Mama Bessie! Fraternally yours, Lynda Novak —SPJST—

Please contact Lynda by emailing magiclady_46@hotmail.com as soon as possible to let her know that you want to participate in dancing the beseda so she can get your admission ticket to the fair. Lodge 47, Seaton Hosts Outdoor Extravaganza
Dear Members and Friends, The officers and members of Lodge 47, Seaton would like to thank each of you who participated in our annual Outdoor Extravaganza fundraiser which was held on Saturday, September 17, 2016. We appreciate your support in helping us make this event a great success. Everyone had a great time visiting with friends, enjoying delicious food, refreshments, and hoping their number was called to win that one special item they so much wanted. A special thank you to Committee Chairman Brandon Bartek for all he did in organizing this event, spending countless hours, and miles a running. Thank you to those who prepared the delicious steak dinner. We thank our many members, friends, and businesses who participated with donations, purchasing tickets, and bringing and bidding on silent and live auction items. To those of you who set up the hall, cleaned up afterwards and again on Sunday morning, brought desserts, prepared the snacks and the meal, thank you! There were many who came out from other lodges and some who are not lodge members, (well,
Saturday, September 17, 2016 • SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall not yet anyway) who also came out to help. We really appreciate you. Thank you for your support of Lodge 47! Of course, this fundraiser is for the entire family. We always welcome children and appreciate you bringing them with you. This year, we had two special card drawings where the prize went to a youth. They loved it! Thank you to lodge member Brian Hoelscher for letting the youth participate in the all-time favorite “duck call.” It was awesome, and the youth loved it. Sheriff Eddy Lange played another favorite with the youth, calling out “heads and tails.” Believe me, all 53 youth who attended that night were in on both games. There was also a drawing for youth prizes. We appreciate Bell County Sherriff Eddy Lange for all the announcing, auctioneering, and making the crowd feel welcome. It is always fun when the one announcing is out there in the crowd, and you can tell he is enjoying himself. Thank you, Eddy Lange! Once again, thank you to all who participated in our annual fundraiser. It was a great evening. It was fun to see so many people enjoying them-
selves, visiting with each other, and making new friends. We look forward to next year. Please mark your calendars for the third Saturday in September which will be September 16, 2017, for our next annual Outdoor Extravaganza. Your contributions will help the community, go towards the SPJST Scholarship Fund, and help maintain the lodge to be able to have more community activities for everyone to enjoy!

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth
President Cathy Simmank called the meeting to order by asking for a moment of silence for Pauline Polinsky Brownlee who passed away earlier in the month. Forty-three members recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Janet Basham then read a story about how Mother Teresa’s efforts to get food for the hungry from an airline while on a trip impacted a man who said he didn’t know how to ask for donations. She wowed him. I like to say business proceeded as usual with the reading of the minutes where there were no corrections. That almost never happens, and Treasurer Margaret Lamance gave a brief summary of our finances. Sunshine Chairman Marlene Bass gave an update on members who were either in the hospital or homebound this day. Estelle Hurtik is still at her daughter’s house recuperating. Betty Krenek has foot and heel pain and is chairbound. Theresa Clay has been in the hospital and is with us today - a little weak but still perking. Robert Kurtnik went to the hospital with a kidney stone the other night. Bless each one of those who are experiencing health problems, and keep them in your prayers.
Business Details Lisa Juran will deliver school supplies that were brought today. October theme will be Halloween. A craft fair, etc. will take place at the November meeting. Hostesses for November were discussed.
Cathy needs more recipes. Caterer possibilities for Christmas dinner were also discussed. Marlene Bass, Marilyn DiOrio, and Theresa Clay were hostesses along with their wonderful helpers Bessie and Lisa Ellsworth. If I’ve left anyone out, please forgive me. I’m getting a little lax in my notes sometimes. Lunch was “delish,” and we always look forward to the variety of menu items members bring. Yum-m-m. John Durham gave a run-down on the upcoming Czech Heritage Day activities scheduled for the lodge the following weekend. Details for the cake walk were reviewed, and it should be a fun afternoon. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Mary Ann Krivanek and Betty Loyd. Others celebrating who were not there were Lucy Martinez and Don Morbitzer. We missed you and hope you had a wonderful birthday. The theme for our meeting was “Dress like a Fan” for sporting events. Members were in their Ranger red, Cowboy blue, Keller blue, Aggie maroon, Notre Dame Irish green, purple Frogs, and Kitty Rippin had on a pink jersey just because. She is too cute. It was fun, and thanks to all who dressed for the occasion. Door prizes were given out, and there were 14 lucky winners. At this point, I can’t remember who won what but they were happy to have a prize. After show-and-tell, Janet said the blessing for lunch, and bingo closed the activities for the day. dancing. At a young age, my mom taught me how to polka and waltz. I still remember the days of running up to my parents while they were dancing because I wanted to dance as well. To this day, I will dance a polka and/or waltz every chance I get. Learning to polka or waltz is something that has to be guaranteed to be passed down. The thought behind the next photo is how much I love to sit down and enjoy a nice, freshly baked kolache cream cheese at that! It is one of the Czech traditions that will never die around here. Who could ever turn down a kolache?! The next photo is of the traditional kroj outfit. Seeing what the local people of the Czech Republic, or Czechoslovakia, wore way back is inspiring. All of the fine needlework, sewing, and the hours it took to make the outfit is jaw-dropping. Being able to dance the beseda gave me the opportunity to wear this outfit and to learn what the Czech culture was like.
The last photo is something that I would see the older, some younger, folks gather around the table enjoying. This is playing the game of tarok. I do not know how to play the game, but I hope to learn one day. I love the artwork and creations on the tarok cards. They are intriguing to look at and makes me wonder how the game is played. By creating this artwork, I had to think of a way to present the photos. I joined the pieces together making it as what you would see in the Czech culture and heritage by living the Czech life. I am proud of what was passed down to me and what I have learned from my grandmother (Dorothy Pechal) when she was the curator for the Czech Heritage Museum. I wanted the artwork to be displayed in a special place — a place that I know would enjoy having it on the wall. I donated it to the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, located at 119 West French Street in Temple, Texas, to show visitors what living the Czech life is like. I hope you will be able to make a visit to the Czech Heritage Museum one day to see my artwork! Do příště, Jerry Pechal —SPJST—

The family returned to Flemingsburg and lived there from 1968 to 1973. She married Anton Haisler July 22, 1981. She moved to the farm in Providence and became his partner until his death on March 20, 2012. She loved Anton’s family like her own especially spending time with Grace and Hope.
Margaret started her restaurant career as a waitress at Cannon Ball Truck Stop in Caldwell. She was the manager of the memorable Pitt Grill for its first three years then she owned and operated Mom’s Cafe in Caldwell until about 1981. Margaret started her volunteering with the Cub Scouts when her son Cliff began Scouts, and she had never quit volunteering. Margaret was an active member of SPJST Lodge 186, Caldwell serving as secretary and treasurer for several years. Margaret was on the original board of the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum in Temple. She has held offices in homemaker’s clubs and has been on the steering committee for the Kolache Festival since it started. She served as head of food booths from the beginning for about 10-plus years. She served as Kolache Queen along with her husband Anton Haisler who was Kolache King in 2008. She became an active member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 4458 and served as secretary, treasurer, senior vice president and president of the local auxiliary. She served as District 17 level junior vice, senior vice, and

president, and worked on several state committees. She has been with the Burleson County Czech Heritage Museum and held many offices. She was a member of Caldwell Brethren Church and Christian Sisters for many years. She worked to keep the Caldwell Senior Center from closing. She has been the volunteer manager of the Caldwell Senior Center for more than 15 years. One of Margaret’s favorite sayings was “Having our senior center open enables senior citizens to live at home and be independent longer.” She served on the Brazos Valley Council of Governments Area Agency on Aging Advisory Committee. In 1999, she was instrumental in having Anton’s sister Lillie move from Rosenberg back to Caldwell. She moved in with Lillie more than two years ago and had been her friend and helper. Margaret was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012, fighting it with surgery, chemo, and radiation. She continued her volunteer work and helping others. The cancer took over her body on July 31, and she spent the last month in Scott and White Hospital in Temple, coming home one week before her passing. Margaret passed away Monday, August 8 with family and friends by her side. She leaves behind a son; two sisters; one brother; one sister-in-law; special friend Robert Mott; and many friends, including her Caldwell Senior Center Family. —SPJST—

In Memory of Adolf and Valeria Motal
19
Adolf was born May 27, 1927. He was raised on a farm in Breslau and later grew up with five brothers and a sister on a farm in Moulton. He always valued education and taught as a teacher when he was only 17 years old. He was salutatorian of Komensky High School. As a young man in 1946, Adolf served his country during World War II in the army. While in the Pacific aboard the USAT, E.T. Collins, his title was pharmacist mate. Adolf and Valeria sacrificed to send all five of their children to Catholic schools. After 45 years as a bookkeeper, Adolf retired from Texas Iron Works. He often worked multiple jobs to provide for his wife and family. Adolf valued his Czech heritage. This led him to be an advocate for the Czech language and culture. Since 1952, he was very involved in the Czech fraternal organization SPJST. He sold SPJST life insurance for many years earning numerous sales awards, including District Six Sales Champion. He taught Czech and Russian language classes at the University of Houston in Houston. In Victoria, he enjoyed teaching Czech to many and found joy in being able to translate manuscripts in English for whomever needed it. As a founding member of SPJST Lodge 32, Victoria, he held the offices of president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. He continued his passion for “all things Czech” by organizing the Czech Singers of Victoria with Vlasta Svoboda in 1973. He spearheaded the group to record three LP albums and cassette tapes. The group also sang at Czech festivals all over Texas for years. This was a true joy to him, and he was happy to have his family involved with him. He was a 3rd Degree and Honorary Life Member of Knights of Columbus Council 1329 with 50 years of service and a life member of VFW Post 4146. Adolf passed away May 16, 2016. Preceding him in death were his wife Valeria and son Adolf John. He leaves behind daughters Catherine Bettge of Meyersville, Rebecca Richardson of Mission Valley, Gayle Hill of Houston, and Mary Eliz-

abeth Byers of Sharpsburg, Georgia. He was a proud grandfather of 14 and great-grandfather of 11. Adolf’s sweet wife of 54 years, Valeria M. Pesna Motal, 75, died October 8, 2003. She was born November 19, 1927, to John R. Pesna and Matilda Balcar Pesna in Schulenburg, Texas. She worked for Dr. Peters in Schulenburg in his office. After marriage to Adolf, they lived in Houston where Adolf went to college, and Valeria worked doing clerical work. When Adolf John and Catherine came along, Adolf took a job with Texas Iron Works. They moved to Victoria where Valeria was a stay at home “mama.” She would put all the children in the car, drive Adolf to work, take him a sack lunch, and pick him up from work every day for many years because they had only one vehicle. She taught her daughters to embroider and crochet. She loved Jesus and prayed for her family daily. With her green thumb, she kept the yard colorful with red verbenas and day lilies. Valeria sold Avon Products and enjoyed it for more than 30 years. In 1969, she began making fishing lures for Ray’s Distributing. After 27 years, she retired with many fond memories. She was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, Catholic Daughter’s of America, SPJST Lodge 32, Victoria, and KJZT. Her grandchildren have precious memories of her thoughtfulness and the fact that she always had yummy candy and chocolate fudgesicles for them. The cinnamon rolls, strudels, rosettes, cherry pie, and persimmon cookies she baked were just a few of the delicious pastries they enjoyed. She enjoyed playing bingo, bunco, and Chinese checkers. She was preceded in death by son Adolf John; and her parents. At the time of her death, she left behind husband Adolf; daughters Catherine Bettge, Rebecca Richardson, Gayle Hill, and Mary Elizabeth Byers; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. —SPJST—

Grandparents make the world a little softer, a little kinder, and a little warmer. For most of us at Lodge 9, Snook, our grandparents have helped mold us into the people we are today. On Sunday, September 11, 2016, SPJST
Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club and Snook 4-H joined together to celebrate our grandparents with a game day and meal. Our younger members played “Pie in the Face” and Jenga, which led to lots of laughter and squealing. Parents, grandparents, and guests played
many games of bingo trying to win the sought after prizes. Following the games, all enjoyed a meal of sandwiches, chicken tenders, dips, and ice cream sundaes. This event also served as the youth membership drive with several 4-H mem-

2016 - 2017 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance
First Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the June 2016 to May 2017 youth year. This is total merit points for the 20162017 youth year thusfar. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended from June 2016 to May 2017. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities.
What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards.
Contest Dates June 1, 2016 to May 31, 2017
Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior
Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Youth Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Youth Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Youth Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest. Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Youth
Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.
Merit Point Awards First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division. Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. sentence or of the predicate nominative (after the verb “to be”). The nominative is also the case of a noun standing alone (unless in direct address, or understood as a part of an incomplete sentence).
The accusative case is the case of the direct object of transitive verbs. It tells what person or object is directly affected by the action of the verb and answers the questions: Whom? What?
The masculine inanimate and neuter hard nouns have the same form in the accusative as in the nominative. The feminine nouns change the ending a to u: Ex.:
Mascu. Fem. Neuter Inanim. Nominative kabát kniha mleko Accusative kabát knihu mléko
2. Sentences using the accusative case: Student má kabát. Student má knihu. Student má mléko.

The three nouns—kabát, kniha, and mléko—are the direct objects in the three sentences. They are said to be in the accusative case. Note that kabát and mléko did not change in form, but kniha changed to knihu. * * * * *

Uctili jsme památku nedávno zemřelých členů a členek našeho řádu, zejména Richarda Hlavinky.

Tradičně je naše besídka oblíbena, protože máme dobrou kuchyni, dobrou zábavu a příjemné prostředí v osadní síni kostela v Toursu, Tx.
