Three Texas Czech cultural museums have partnered to bring the art of Czech illustrator and painter Josef Lada from Prague to the United States for the first time. The exhibit of 96 pieces will be divided between the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple, the Czech Center Museum in Houston and the Texas Czech Cultural and Heritage Center in La Grange. The exhibits will open in October and remain through February. Each museum is hosting an opening event featuring a lecture and discussion by folk artist and Czech importer Daniela Mahoney of Portland, Oregon. The dates are October 22 in Houston; October 25 in Temple; and October 29 in La Grange. Lada’s work is well known in the Czech Republic and has shown in galleries and museums for decades in Europe. In his village of Hrusice, one can visit his home, now a museum of his works and that of his daughter, Alena. “We are happy to have managed this first U.S. Josef Lada exhibit with (the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple) and hope it will go well,” said Lada.

Joseph Lada, 1887 to 1957, was a prolific painter, illustrator, and cartoonist. He was editor of the Sunday supplement for the Cesky Slovo. He painted numerous series of illustrations and cartoons including “How Newspapers are Made,” “Pub Brawls,” Mikes the Talking Cat,” and many landscapes and village scenes from his home and childhood. He also designed sets and costumes for the National Theatre. His Christmas illustrations were animated for film to depict the J.J. Ryba’s Czech Christmas Mass (1796), a beautiful Czech equivalent to our Handel’s Messiah. His political satire cartoons appeared in major Czech magazines and newspapers. When Lada’s old roommate Jaroslav Hasek’s wrote a humorous commentary on the absurdities of war and oppression, he asked Lada to create a cover. Lada went on to illustrate the book, “The Good Soldier Svejk and his fortunes in the world war” and the sequel, “The Red Commissar.” “The Good Soldier Svejk,” one of

eally great moments in life can often catch us unaware. These moments make us consider what kind of experiences we value the most in our lives. It reminds me of the Cab Ride story by Kent Nerburn. A taxi driver picked up an elderly lady in the middle of the night. He loaded her baggage and held her hand as she limped into the taxi. “Why are you so kind?” she asked. He replied, “It’s nothing; I just try to treat my passengers as I’d want my mother to be treated.” The lady was alone, sick, and going to a hospice to spend her last days; but she had great memories of where she used to live with her husband and where she used to work. The driver offered to take her by these places on the way to the hospice, which made her very happy. As they arrived at the hospice, the lady tried to pay; but the driver said, “No charge - it was my pleasure.” The driver always remembered that day, which was a high point of his life. It’s these moments of joy that sometimes make us think, realize, and believe the reasons and purposes why we are placed on earth.

Reader seeks information Reader expresses thanks for Gala article about ancestors’ trip from Czechlands to USA
Hi, Melanie. I enjoy reading the Vestnik. Thank you for your good work. My grandpa and his family came to America on a ship, and he never shared any information about the voyage. I am hoping that some of your readers have information they could share about their family’s trip from the Czechlands to USA. I’d be interested in all details – why they left, where they sailed from and to, conditions onboard, their first impressions upon arrival, etc. Thank you very much, Cindy Martin Lodge 160, San Angelo —SPJST—
Reader expresses thanks for lodge event coverage
Melanie and Staff, The Vestnik a couple of weeks ago with our Lodge 4, Hallettsville Family Day pictures was great. Asher was so excited to see his picture with his aunt and cousin, George, on the front page. I got a phone call from them before we even got our Vestnik. Timing was good—the aunt with the picture on the cover with the kids fractured her foot a few days before, and when she saw the picture it really brightened her day. You’ll do an amazing job each week. Thanks, Annie Vahalik Lodge 4, Hallettsville —SPJST—

Friendship Club of Fort Worth
Members of the Friendship Club met on Wednesday, October 5, 2016, at the St. Thomas Parish Dining Room for their monthly meeting. President Margaret Sears called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. The theme was Halloween with thanks to Rose Ann Spann and Lola Taylor for the table decorations, and thanks also go out to Barbara Becknell for the cute individual pumpkin favors given to all members. We missed singing “Happy Birthday” as Mary Schneider was our only member celebrant, and she was not present. October hostesses were Debbie Skrasek and Libbie Vrla. We want to thank all our helpers especially Lupe Esparza for making the coffee and tea for us. We had several members missing: Lois Smith was having a procedure done. Shirley Martin had open heart surgery, and we hear that she is doing well. Tracy Horn is having cataract surgery later this week. Get well wishes go out to all. Sunshine Person Marie Keller reported on sending two get well cards to Shirley. We had four door prizes brought by Helen Skrasek, Lorraine Cross (two), and Libbie Vrla, and we had four happy winners. The 50/50 dollar game winners were Pat McWilliams and Debbie Skrasek. Last month, Lola Taylor had planned to have an Elvis impersonator entertain us, but this month said “Elvis is not in the building.” But, she will schedule him for January. At our November meeting, she will bring supplies and teach us how to make Christmas ornaments. It was announced that St. Thomas Church will have a church sale of furnishings for members on October 29, and on November 5, the public will be invited. Members hope to be in their new church soon. I hear that the new building is beautiful. President Margaret discussed our Thanksgiving luncheon, and Mary Ann Krivanek volunteered to bake the turkey and make dressing. Colors for November are gold and burgundy and, of course, the theme is Thanksgiving. She also stated that in November, we bring non-perishable food items for the St. Thomas Food Pantry. The nominating committee was appointed with Chairperson Margaret Honnig and assistants Elizabeth
Creamer and Barbara Becknell. We will elect officers in November with new officers assuming duties in January. Helen Skrasek was so pleased to announce two new members that will join after the first of the year. Her sister Adele and husband Harold Strand of McGregor, Texas, will be moving to the Trinity Terrace Retirement Home here in Fort Worth and already plan to join the Friendship Club. Maybe sometimes he will bring his accordion as we sure have been missing the late Joe Kozel and his accordion. Following the meeting, grace was said, and a great luncheon with enjoyed.
News Tracy and her son Kenny, daughter Karen and husband Dan traveled to Allen to pick up Tracy’s great-niece Lori Nemec who lives in Germany and is visiting here. The group enjoyed lunch at a Polish restaurant in Plano. Tracy said they had the best time visiting. On the way, they also got to see J.R. Ewing’s house which was always featured on the TV show “Dallas.” Lydia Alholm and I attended Czech Heritage Day at SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth. Lydia absolutely had the best time visiting with old friends. She called ahead of time and reserved “her table” where she and Roy always used to sit at. Lydia always says that Willie Skrasek is the one that takes care of her car. I believe he is retired, but when Lydia calls him, he always comes. I recently attended a funeral in Ennis, and since my sister Georgie Morales knows everybody, she introduced me to a lot of her friends. I especially enjoyed meeting Melton and Brenda Vrla. Melton said that “Melton” and “Vrla” are very common names in the Czech Republic and that we are not related. I have always
heard that there are at least three different Vrla families in Ennis. Brenda said she reads my articles in the Vestnik – thanks, Brenda. I also met Willie Honza and his wife who said they are best friends with Frankie and Wilma Vrla of Dallas. We are related to this Vrla, and I know they get the Vestnik, so Hello Frankie and Wilma. I hope all is well with you. The next meeting will be on November 2. Bring a food dish to complement turkey and dressing, and food items for St. Thomas Food Pantry, or you can donate cash. Dear Readers, The youth of Lodge 84, Dallas met on Saturday, October 8, 2016, for their monthly meeting. We needed to activate our season passes so we decided to gather at Six Flags Over Texas and make it our monthly social. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was held for our departed members and soldiers serving overseas. Assistant Youth Leader Vicki Sims conducted the meeting after it was brought to order by Kendall Tucker. She reminded us about the District Three
outing on Heritage Day at the State Fair on October 16. She also reminded us about the Halloween costume and Christmas ornament contests that we could participate in at the District Three meeting on Sunday, October 23 in Ennis. We also did our Vestnik projects while there. A motion was then made to adjourn which was accepted by all. We then went and enjoyed a fun day at Six Flags! Fraternally, Kendall Tucker —SPJST—
State King’s Notebook: Heritage Festival at the State Fair of Texas
This past weekend was one for the books! The State Royalty made an appearance at the 21st Annual Heritage Festival at the State Fair of Texas. The four of us helped in the parade of flags with J. Beaux and I holding the flag for Slovakia and Rileigh and Amanda holding the United States flag. After Amanda and I introduced ourselves to the
crowd, we got to go explore the Fair! We tried everything fried that you could imagine. From funnel cake fries, cookie fries, fried alligator, and many other yummy foods. Big Tex was a sight to see and, of course, we all got a picture with him. We all got to check out and get inside some really fancy cars. I can’t wait until I can drive.
I was sad to leave Dallas because I love how close our little group is becoming, and I can’t wait until our next event! Colby See 2016-2017 SPJST State King —SPJST—

Correcting some often-made errors. In this lesson, we will deal with some errors that are frequently made by Czechs in Texas. Kde/Kam
These two words are probably misused more than any others. We frequently hear, ‘Kde jedeš?’ This is wrong. To indicate the physical action of going somewhere, the word kam is used: Kam jdes; Kam jedeš? The word kde indicates a stationary situation, and cannot be used to indicate physical action.
Example: Kde to je? Kde bydlíte? Kde je nádraží? etc. And using kam, we say the following: Kam pojedete večer? Kam půjdete po divadle? Kam jste šli po zábavě, etc. All you need to remember is whether you are indicating action or not. * * * * * Sem/Jsem
We call words like these homonyms. They sound the same, but have entirely different meanings. In English, some homonyms are there, their, they’re; bear, bare; and close, clothes. Sem means ‘here’ or ‘to here’, with action. Example:

Včera prijeli sem. Pojď sem! Dojeli sem šťastně.
All of these involved action in coming or getting here.
Jsem means simply ‘I am’, or when used with certain verbs, denotes tense, or time something happened.
Example: Jsem už starší člověk. Jsem by (byla) na výletě v horách. Jsem se měl dobře.
In speaking the above two words of sem and jsem, there is practically no recognizable difference. However, in writing it makes all the difference in the world. One means

Správa/Zpráva
Here are two tricky words, both written and pronounced exactly the same, but again have two entirely different meanings. It is, therefore, important that we know how to spell the one we wish to use.
Správa means administration; správka, which is a repair; or spraviti which means to fix or to repair.
Example: Státní správá je umístěna v Austině. Strojník provedl správku na pračce. Podařilo se mu náš přijímač spraviti. Zpráva means report.
Example: Pán ředitel podal zprávu o škole.
Using both words: Vedoucí státní správy podal podrobnou zprávu o své činnosti. * * * * *
Umět/Mohu Umět means ‘to know how to do things’. It must not be confusedwith mohu.
Example: Umíte mluvit česky? Ten člověk neumí mlčet. Umíš hráti na klavír? Mohu means ‘I can’, indicating permission.
Example: Mohu jet s vámi—Can I go with you? Ano, mohu vám to říci.

the most translated of Czech books, is available in over 60 languages and is considered one of the country’s most important literary works. Svejk is an popular iconic figure in Czech culture even today. There are Svejk-themed restaurants and pubs. Svejk reenactors can been seen posing next to statues and busts honoring the bumbling soldier. Numerous plays, films, animated cartoons, and even claymation movies have been made. Although Svejk has been compared to Beetle Bailey and Gomer Pyle, it might be more accurate to equate him with Corporal Klinger on Mash. “We are never really sure if he is an idiot or a genius,” said Anna Lunakova, of Prague, who presented her thesis on immigration during a lecture tour across Texas this summer. Lada’s seemingly simplistic paintings are also considered more complicated and sophisticated than they first appear. “He is so popular because everybody understands his visual style. It is clear to everyone – children like it, parents like it, everybody likes it,” said Jan Trestik, who organized a major retrospective exhibit at Prague’s Obecni Dum in 2007. “But, we shouldn’t confuse Lada with his simple style. When you are in everyday contact with the pictures, then you realize, ‘wow, there is probably more to it than that.’ So, now I see his work with different eyes.” Apparently, Trestik is not alone in this opinion. At auction, a Josef Lada piece currently averages $60,000. Most are small gouache on paper paintings or zincographs. In 1947, he was named National Artist of Czechoslovakia. His “Triptych with Bohemian Landscapes” was painted in 1935 for the Czech Embassy in Paris. The asteroid 17625JosefLada was named for him, but perhaps the most relevant proof of Lada’s importance is a Google Doodle honoring him on December 17, 2011, his 124th birthday and one featuring his Svejk illustrations in 2013. It’s hard to imagine the quiet pastoral paintings and humorous World War I cartoons of Josef Lada stirring up any trouble. His famous Christmas
postcards of snowy Czech village scenes are filled with children sledd i n g , snowmanbuilding projects, multi-generational families in cozy kitchens, and bundled up townsfolk trudging to the hilltop chapel on a starry night. But in the 1970s, these benign images were censored. The government refused to allow the Lada family to publish one of his most popular works without specific changes. “It was a 12-month calendar,” said Martin Lada, grandson of Josef Lada. “Back in the 70s, it was necessary to substitute all religious or ideological motives – which are in every picture: saints, three kings, Black February – with some neutral motif such as a bowl of fruit, hay, flowers, Easter egg, or mushrooms. Otherwise, it could not be published!” So they complied, switching out a nativity scene for birds, dear old St. Nick bringing gifts to children for a snowy cabin and St. Wenceslas for a bowl of fruit. In fact, every page of Lada’s popular calendar was censored. After the civilized 1989 Velvet Revolution, communist oppression was ousted and the Lada family restored Lada’s central theme of faith, family, and community. The family published his calendars and Christmas cards with the original images. They also began producing handmade soaps, bath salts, puzzles, toys, and Lada’s original cut-out nativity scenes and chocolate Advent calendars. These products have been sold in the U.S., mostly in museum stores and the Svejk books have been available in English here for many years. But, an exhibit of his work has never before crossed the Atlantic.

The popularity of his work today is a fitting parable about overcoming obstacles. Lada’s life wasn’t always idyllic like his pictures. He was blinded in one eye as a toddler when he fell on his father’s cobbler’s tool. Although his artistic talent was recognized early, his family could only afford to encourage him to train as a house painter. He left his village for Prague while a teenager to seek art training, but eventually became self-taught. His young daughter was killed during a World War II air raid in Prague. Then the communists curbed his career, labeling his work bourgeois and accusing him of promoting the middle class. He died in 1957, and missed seeing his country become an independent and free republic once again. After the fall of communism, a new reason for picking on Lada was concocted. “In the 1990s, it was very fashionable to have a go at Lada for not including any evil in his parallel universe,” Pavla Pecinkova told Radio Prague in a 2011 interview. “In Lada’s paintings, there is no sex, no violence, no death. The artist was criticized for presenting a ‘dangerous ideal.’ ” “I think that creating a parallel world as a form of escapism is not just something that Lada does. All sorts of artists were doing this in the 1930s, and throughout both of the World Wars. The artist had the choice of using his art to engage his surroundings or to escape them. Lada was one of those introverts and sought inspirations from within,” said Pecinkova. “In his pictures, it is eternal spring. There is harmony. Children are playing. It’s a world of positive values.” —SPJST—
