Siblings Amanda and Jason Hermis of SPJST Lodge 142, Houston celebrate the one year anniversary on September 1 since Jason received a kidney from Amanda. Both Jason and Amanda were active youth club members, and Jason was the 1996 Mr. SPJST.

Strudel Time!

Grandma Doreen Honza shows granddaughter Hayden Thornton, both of Lodge 25, Ennis, how to butter strudels for an event at the lodge hall recently. The lodge will host its annual strudel bake sale fundraiser for the upcoming holidays. Pick up dates are Tuesday, November 22 for Thanksgiving and Friday, December 23 for Christmas. To place your orders for November and December, call Margaret 972-878-6149 or Betty 972-878-

A Bond Like No Other

SPJST Lodge 142, Houston members and siblings Jason Hermis and Amanda Hermis, children of Dennis and Elizabeth Hermis, have a bond like no other. Jason, who was the 1996 Mr. SPJST, was born with a rare disease that affects his kidneys. He and the Hermis family always knew that he would eventually need a new kidney. In 2015, the time came that Jason needed a kidney transplant. Sister Amanda passed all of the beginning stages of the donation process. Doctors requested a genetic test, which did not exist at the time. The Methodist Hospital Kidney Transplant Center

then received a grant especially for the genetic test. The results of the test took one month. “We hit the lottery,” Dennis said, when the results came back six out of six, which is a perfect score. That was just one of the many hurdles that Amanda went through to donate her kidney to her brother. On September 1, 2015, the kidney transplant was performed without any complications. Jason, Amanda, and their family celebrated one year of the kidney transplant. They are both doing very well. Best wishes to them for continued good health. —SPJST—

scientist sat and worked, when suddenly approached by his nine-yearold son, determined to help him in his work. The scientist, who would rather not be interrupted, tried to ask his son to go somewhere else for a while, but when he saw that he would not, he started looking for something that can keep a child busy. He grabbed and tore a page from a booklet with a world map, cut it into small pieces, and gave it to the child with a roll of duct tape. “Do you like puzzles?” he said, “Take this dismantled world map and see if you can fix it yourself.” He was confident the child would take many days to assemble the map, but a few hours later, he heard the voice of the son calling him, “Dad, I’m done, I put everything back together.” At first, he did not believe it. “It isn’t possible at the age of nine to reconstruct a map of the world he had never seen before,” he thought. But he put down his notes, and went to his son, when he was sure he was going to see a mess. To his surprise, the map was perfect, and all the pieces were in place! “How did you do that?” The scientist asked his son. “How did you put the world back together?” “Well, Dad,” the boy answered, “I don’t know the world, but when you tore the page from the magazine, I saw on the other side a picture of a man. When you gave me the world to fix, I tried but couldn’t. Then I flipped all the VESTNIK

pieces and started to fix the person. “And when I fixed the man, I turned it over and saw the world had been fixed as well . . . ”

Fraternalist of the Year Nominations It’s time to start thinking about selecting your lodge’s fraternalist of the year for 2016. This year we will be recognizing your lodge’s fraternalist at your district spring meeting. There will not be a statewide incentive event in January 2017. Please know that your local lodge fraternalist of the year may be chosen in a variety of ways. You decide the method that works best for you. The main emphasis should be on making sure that all adult

State Youth Director expresses gratitude

Dear Members, I would like to express my most sincere gratitude to all the members of SPJST and Home Office Staff that

members 16 or older be considered without bias. Individuals previously honored by your lodge may be honored again if they meet your selection criteria. The main thing to remember is that SPJST has a lot of great volunteers within our ranks, and we want to give credit where credit is due. The form for submitting your Fraternalist of the Year has also been greatly simplified. Thanks for tending to this item at your October, November, or December meeting. If you have any questions, please give me a call.

Officer Elections The end of another year is rapidly approaching. Many lodges have had a very productive and successful year. This is the time of year when lodges across the state will be electing the leaders for the coming year. Has your lodge moved forward? Has your lodge met all of its goals?

have extended their thoughts and prayers during my father’s illness and in his death. I would especially like to thank Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Horak, Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny, SPJST President Brian Vanicek, and Human Resource Administrator Debbie Klinkovsky for stepping up and helping out with my duties as State Youth Director. Thanks also to Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez for working with me so well through email and telephone as well as all seven District Youth Counselors who rearranged their schedules so that I could remain close to home. I am extremely proud and thankful to work for such an amazing company that is led by strong and caring directors and officers. This has been the hardest thing for me to deal with in my life, but my burden has been made lighter by the many thoughtful words and actions extended to my family and I throughout the last three months. Thank you all for holding my family and me in prayer during this time of loss and grief for such a special person in our lives. We know that he is in Heaven looking over us forever until we are reunited again; we are sad for our loss, but we are at peace knowing that he is eternally blessed. I must admit I am a little jealous of the angels. Fraternally, Lynette Talasek State Youth Director Lodge 47, Seaton —SPJST—

Has your lodge completed all of its projects planned for the year in your community? Has your lodge set goals for 2017? Keeping this in mind may help you make choices on who you will elect to keep your lodge moving forward in the coming year. It is the duty of all members to provide the leaders of their lodge with suggestions, ideas, and assistance. When asked to assist with activities throughout the year, please help your lodge officers. Fraternalism works best when every member is involved in the process. While lodges are electing new officers, this would also be an excellent time to check the back page of the Vestnik for your meeting date and time. Many lodges are not listed. This would be an excellent time to get the information listed. If any of this information has changed, please

contact Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny at 800-7277578 and have her update your lodge information.

Outgoing Officers With the election of new officers, do not forget to honor your officers who have given their time and dedication to your lodge. Honor your outgoing leaders by giving them an outgoing officer plaque. Any officer who is not elected to serve in 2017 and does not seek reelection in future years is eligible. The recipient must be a current SPJST member and must be active at the time of selection. The plaques should be awarded at your local lodge meeting.

Important Paperwork Everyone please know that the forms listed below are very important in receiving your enhanced premium refund and other incentives. Please return these forms even if there are no changes from the previous year. Fraternal Activities Coordinators, it is very important to enter and complete your hours by January 13, 2017, to receive those refunds and other incentives. Please look for the 2017 New Officer Listing form to be mailed out the first week of November from Compliance Specialist Tamara Gettys. This form needs to be completed and turned in as soon as possible to the Home Office. All other deadline dates remain the same. They are: January 2, 2017—New Officers Listing form — address, phone listing and emails January 13, 2017— Year-End Fraternal Incentive Reporting Hours February 24, 2017—Outgoing Officer Awards May 15, 2017—990 and 990-T to IRS and copy to Home Office

100 Pennies Scholarship Drive Began October 1 Everyone, spread the word! October 1 started the SPJST 100 Pennies Drive to benefit the scholarship fund. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive will run through March 31, 2017.

Veterans Day On November 11, please find a moment to remember to honor our veterans who have bravely answered the call to defend our right of freedom, aided and com-

forted our friends and allies, and have turned away countless aggressors. We, as a nation, can never repay our debt of gratitude to the many men and women who died in the line of battle or were wounded to protect the right of our freedom. Please pause on this day and at your local lodge meeting (even if it is after November 11) to recognize and thank the veterans and the many military men and women who have fought in the past and are sill fighting today to protect our freedom.

Christmas Open House Please make plans to be in Temple on Monday, December 5. This is the date of the City of Temple’s Annual Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting. Again, this year SPJST will participate in the parade so come out to see the SPJST floats and State Royalty. Following the parade, SPJST will host the annual Christmas Open House at the Home Office, located at 520 North Main Street in Temple. What a great time to visit the Home Office and socialize with fellow SPJST members. Refreshments will be served and again there is a rumor that Santa and Mrs. Claus will stop by for a visit at the Home Office. Spread the word about this fun event. Watch the Vestnik for additional details as they become available. Progressive “42” Domino Tournament The first SPJST state tournament of 2017 will take place on Saturday, January

14. This will be the Progressive “42” Domino Tournament to be held at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. Please include in your New Year’s resolution to become actively involved in all state and local lodge activities in 2017.

Happy Thanksgiving From the Fraternal Department — at this time of Thanksgiving celebration — our thoughts turn gratefully to you our members with warm appreciation. We are all very thankful to be part of the wonderful SPJST statewide family that does so much for each other and our communities. As we celebrate the holiday, let us give thanks to our Creator and His Son and reflect on what is important, our family and friends. Cherish the time you have with each other and always let them know how much they mean to you.

Calendar of Events Please remember to mark your calendars for the 2017 SPJST State Tournaments. Last year, we located all tournaments at the Home Office and we had larger turnouts. The 2017 state tournaments will also be held at the SPJST Home Office. Entry for the tournaments will be $10 for members and non-members. There will be Czech pastries in the morning, a catered meal for the participants during the noon hour, and fun and fellowship. The tournament dates are:

Lodge 24, Cyclone hosts polka dance: The Moravians

On Saturday, October 15, The Moravians Polka Band played a dance at SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone. If you didn’t come, you missed out! The Moravians were formed in 2009 and have been performing Czech and country music all over the state of Texas. The band played beautifully on Czech polkas like “I Love To Dance” and “Tick Tock,” and they also played well known Czech waltzes like “Red and White” and “Katherine’s.” The guys really got the crowd dancing on a few country numbers like “Wagon Wheel” and “Neon Moon.” There was also plenty of food to keep your belly full. Daniel Wilde kept busy at the grill making his unique hamburger patty recipe. Daniel must have done something right because we sold out of patties. The Moravians closed their performance with the old polka favorite

“When I Sleep.” One of the band members jokingly introduced the song by saying, “The last song we are going to play tonight is ‘When I Sleep Polka.’ It’s very fitting since that’s what all of you are probably going to do when you go home.” We want to thank everyone who came out to Flag Hall and helped support the band and Lodge 24. We also want to thank The Moravians for playing beautifully and taking their time to play at Lodge 24. We hope to see everyone when we have another polka dance. Lodge 24, Cyclone celebrated Czech Heritage Month with a dance featuring The Moravians band from Ennis, Texas. The band played some of the best polkas and waltzes that I have heard in a long time. The evening was filled with people dancing and visiting and, of course, a few visits to the bar for their favorite beverage. It was wonderful to hear laughter and visiting, and people clapping to every song. The music just kept getting bet-

ter and better as the night went on. I especially love the trumpets playing in harmony. And the band played three trumpet harmony on “Youth and Pleasure Polka,” and of course, that song was for our special guests, the king and queen of the National Polka Festival in Ennis Michael and Christina Brenek. Our kitchen crew served some of those famous Flag Hall burgers, and Daniel had those grilled burgers juicy

and flavorful. We sold out way too soon. I was hoping to have another one before I went home, but there were none. It was very fitting to have a band called the Moravians for Czech Heritage Month because that is the part of the Czech Republic that most of our local people’s relatives came to America from. Our Czech language is Moravian style, and the music they played followed the Moravian style

that our local people love to dance to. What a wonderful night to remember! A big thank you to everyone who helped with the event and to those who came out to help us celebrate our heritage. And a thank you to each and every band member of the Moravians for coming to play for us at Flag Hall. Your music was fantastic! We hope to have you back at our hall soon. Linda M. Lodge 40 El Campo-Hillje needs your help

Hello, Members, and Greetings from SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje! This letter is in reference to our second annual raffle to raise funds to maintain, repair, and update our lodge building. With the funds raised from last year’s raffle, we were able to complete the lights, rewire the inside of the building, and finish the event lights for the outside security of the building. We also repaired and maintained the building as needed. This was accomplished - thanks to your support and donation to the raffle last year. Funds are down in the lodge’s account, and we cannot rely exclusively on the annual SPJST stipend and the few contracted rentals to financially support the lodge and the building. With every building, there are monthly and annual costs, repairs, and continued updates to maintain. We hoped to raise enough last year to purchase liability insurance, but that wasn’t possible. So our struggle continues. With that being said, we will be hosting a prize drawing. For Lodge 40 to succeed and to keep the building, we

need your support. If any member of the lodge or anyone you know would like to support the project, please contact Raffle Chairman Norma at 979637-1507. The drawing will be held Sunday, December 11, 2016, after the monthly meeting which begins at 1 p.m. This will be family day at the lodge so we invite all members to attend. We pray for SPJST, its members, and the success of this fundraiser. If you have any questions about the project or the lodge situation, please contact Lodge 40 President Cathy Garcia at 979-3321614. Respectfully, SPJST Lodge 40 El Campo-Hillje Officers and Members —SPJST—

The quilt top was made by member Ann Clagett. It was really pretty. Thank you, everyone, who quilted. By lunchtime, we had 19 members. President Irene led us in grace, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. We had three platters of sandwiches, meat loaf, and chicken strips along with many other dishes and desserts. Thank you to all, and thank you to the set-up and clean-up crew. You’re great! After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Al-

card for Ginny Svehlak in the loss of her husband Edwin. Dorothy announced the birthday celebrants - Margaret Martinek, Georgia Holy, and Georgie Morales. “Happy Birthday” was sung to our three members. As Ginny was absent, Dorothy Bobalek read a funny story, “How it was then and how it is now,” and a poem, “I’m Fine.” Both were enjoyed. President Irene has talked with Ginny Svehlak, and Ginny has asked if Dorothy Bobalek could take her vice president’s position until next year. Our sympathy goes out to Ginny in her sudden loss of husband Edwin. I know it is hard to lose someone, but I also know that our dear Lord will help her through this sad time. Let’s remember Ginny in our prayers. President Irene announced for all quilters to bring a large needle next month as we will be tie quilting for Kay Lynn Kovar. President Irene also announced that we will have a workshop next year, and all make baby quilts. She also showed how to make labels to put on finished quilts. You put who the quilt was made for, who made the quilt, the year made, and the name of the pattern. She also announced that in November, we will discuss who will keep their officer position. If we need to have a vote, that will be in December, and new officers will take their positions in January 2017. We also discussed our Thanksgiving dinner. Dorothy Kudrna offered to purchase and bake the turkey. Ann and

I know everything will be great! Irene talked about working on our cookbooks. Thank you to Libbie for donating a ream of white printing paper, and to Lil for donating the cookbook covers. Liz Krajca visited the meeting and reported the junior gymnastic class will be reprinting an old Sokol cookbook, and that we could add our recipes to the book. Everyone agreed. Thank you to Libbie. She also donated two boxes of birthday and get well cards. In November, we will start selling prize drawing tickets for the Christmas quilt and other items. Bring extra cash. If you would also like to help with the Christmas sacks for our shut-in members, please let us know. Margaret Martinek was the 50-50 dollar winner. Congratulations! Thank you to everyone for attending, quilting, bringing the lunch dishes, and for helping with the set-up, and clean-up. It was good to see everyone; come again, stay safe and happy. Mother Nature is teasing us once again. Some days and nights are on the cool side then the sun comes up and waa-laa, it hits 90 degrees. Summer just won’t go away. At our October meeting, the 42 in attendance said the Pledge of Allegiance, and President Cathy Simmank welcomed our newest member, Sue Grove Solan. We are always so happy to have another friend in our midst. Janet Basham read the thought for the day and reminded us to get out and vote when the time comes. Business then proceeded as usual, with the minutes and financial information being shared and approved. Sunshine Chairman Marlene Bass filled us in on those who were ill. Cards were sent to Estelle Hurtik who is still recu-

perating from her fall and Shirley Martin who had open heart surgery recently. Shirley was with us and looked as lovely as ever. So happy to have her here. Others reported to be on the notso-good list were Theresa Clay who had surgery, Caroline O’Brien who was in the hospital, and Lois Smith who we heard was also in the hospital. We understand prayers are still needed for Mary Carpenter, sister of Pauline Morbitzer and Betty Lloyd, who lives in Indiana. To each of you, we send our thoughts and prayers during these difficult times. We always miss those of you who are not with us and hopefully, you all are on the road to recovery. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Janet Basham. To all others including Mary Windham, Estelle Hurtek, Norma McClendon, and Louise Collins, we wish you another wonderful year. Me thinks you all stayed away cause you didn’t want to hear our singing!

Business items reported on or discussed: 1. Lisa Juran reported that the staff from Castleberry Elementary was very excited and appreciative for the school supplies and money donated for their use. Thanks to Lisa, this project went off without a hitch. 2. As a reminder, at our November meeting, we will be having a garage sale of sorts. Members can bring items to sell to other members and keep the profits. We do this once a year, and it is fun to see what everyone brings. 3. President Cathy issued a last call for recipes. Mail them to her if you want yours included in our booklet. 4. We will have an election of officers in November. It was voted to not have a committee but to just have nominations from the floor. I’ll just bet I know where this is going. 5. Christmas catering options were discussed and voted on. The Chicken

We will be collecting food for various area food banks in November, so please bring a canned good or nonperishable items. There were many door prizes and as always great food for lunch. The kitchen crew of Bessie and Lisa Ellsworth, Christine Apperson, and Wanda Moree were thanked, and their work preparing lunch was most appreciated. It was outstanding. Come be with us in November; we’d love to see you. Respectfully submitted, Joan Shropshire, Secretary —SPJST—

SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth member Halle Tomlinson competes on NBC’s “The Voice” By Sarah Kuta, Staff Writer Daily Camera Boulder News • September 28, 2016

Editor’s Note: Thanks to District Three Treasurer Mary Steinman for sharing the news of her cousin, Halle Tomlinson. Halle is the granddaughter of Mary Jean Sledge. They are all members of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth. Halle’s blind audition appeared on the September 26 episode of “The Voice.” Unfortunately, she did not win the battle round on the October 17 episode. Halle’s audition on YouTube has 2.4 million views, and her studio version of “New York State of Mind” has almost 70,000 views. “The Voice” will pick some artists to return to the show. Halle could be one of them. She needs your help - if you think they should ask her back, please spread the word! @NBCTheVoice #HalleForComeBackArtist #BringBackHalle Halle’s mom Kelly Butler says, “Thanks to everyone for the support, and please continue to view her YouTube clips and buy the song on iTunes if you like it! It really helps her.

A Boulder, Colorado, singer and music teacher will appear on “The

Voice” this season after a successful blind audition that aired on the popular NBC show Tuesday night, September 26. Halle Tomlinson, 18, performed a soulful rendition of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind” during a blind audition on the popular singing competition show, which features celebrity judges Miley Cyrus, Alicia Keys, Adam Levine, and Blake Shelton. On “The Voice,” the celebrity judges listen to each performance with their backs turned to the artist. If they like what they hear, they turn around. The performer then gets to select which celebrity judge’s team to join. Once teams have been assembled, they compete against each other with weekly performances until viewers select a winner. The winner gets $100,000 and a recording contract. Two chairs turned for Tomlinson during her performance. Levine turned around almost immediately, followed by Keys. Tomlinson ultimately decided to join “Team Alicia.” “Your voice is an instant, recognizable signature,” Keys told Tomlinson. “There is a gang of people that are carbon copies of a gang of other people. loved it you didn’t try too hard. It was easy and effortless and fluid It was so good. I’m so proud of you. I loved it.” Levine said he thought Tomlinson had some things to work on, but added that she had a “gorgeous voice and a lot of potential.” On “The Voice,” Tomlinson explained that she grew up in Dallas and spent much of her childhood at her parents’ performance arts studio. She appeared on the television show “Barney & Friends” as a child. After 11 years, Tomlinson said the studio closed and her parents split up. Her mom, Kelly, remarried and the family moved to Boulder when Tomlinson was 12 or 13. “My biggest fan is probably my mom,” said Tomlinson as she fought back tears. “We’ve been through a lot together. She is one of the most incredible people that I have ever met.” Tomlinson said she works as an instructor at School of Rock, a music school with locations in Boulder, Denver, Broomfield, Littleton, and Aurora.

Bef o r e walking out o n stage, To m linson s a i d s h e would “probab l y freak out” if Keys turned around during her performance. “This is really what I want to do, this is my passion so I hope it works out,” Tomlinson said. According to her website, Tomlinson was influenced by classic rock and new age styles “to create an original sound unlike anything else.” Tomlinson plays the piano, guitar, drums, and bass, and has performed at Red Rocks and Lollapalooza, according to her website. —SPJST—

State Youth Director shares November news

November is here! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! To those of you who will be traveling during over Thanksgiving, may your journeys be joyous and safe. I hope everyone had an opportunity in October to participate in Make a Difference Day. I will be anxiously awaiting photographs and letters about all the good works done by our youth members and their families. The year is really zooming by so please be sure to take some time out at your next youth meeting to discuss having a membership drive. Membership drives can help create a momentum of growth in your group, but don’t just stop there. Continue to host fun events for youth to enjoy throughout the year. Remember, each youth club receives one free mailout every year! Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny can make some really great event flyers and mail them out - all you have to do is plan the event. Check out www.thesource4ym.com for some really great youth event ideas! With November here and December right around the corner, it is time for families to come together and be thankful for what is important — good health, relationships, and life’s simple blessings. This is also the time of the year our youth can make a big difference in someone else’s life. There are many families having a hard time making ends meet. Youth leaders, consider challenging your youth to help

out a family in need in the local community, helping stock your local food pantry, helping an elderly neighbor, or assisting your local Salvation Army with its Red Kettle Christmas Drive. Also, lodge Christmas parties will be starting and members love a wellplanned Christmas play. Start planning today, and don’t forget to take plenty of pictures and share your Christmas joy with SPJST members across the state.

“Seeking the Treasures of SPJST” Membership Drive Even if your youth club has not yet achieved its “Seeking the Treasures of SPJST” goal, there’s still time! Encourage your youth club members to turn in those referral cards! All referral cards received during a given month go into a drawing for three $25 gift cards. All referral cards received during the year will go into a drawing for five $100 gift cards.

Youth Leader Incentive I have been very impressed with several youth clubs across the state who have increased their membership and are in the running for the $100 youth leader incentive. Just in case it has slipped your mind - If your youth club active membership increases by five new members, the youth leader will receive $100. If your youth club active membership increases by 10 or more the youth leader will receive $200. There is still plenty of time to build up your youth club and win some extra spending money!

SPJST Scholarships and Leadership Grants All members who are high school seniors are encouraged to apply for the SPJST General Scholarship and Leadership Grant. Undergraduates are encouraged to apply for the General Scholarship. Please, remember that you need to be an active youth club member to apply for the Leadership Grant. For more information or for applications, please call Sandra Dubcak in the Fraternal Department. Completed scholarship applications and related application materials must be postmarked on or before February 1, 2017.

Vestnik Project Due Dates Keep those Vestnik Projects coming in on time. This is a simple way to make sure each youth club member receives the points that he/she deserves. I would like to commend the vast majority of you for getting the Vestnik Projects in on time. Keep up the good work! October Vestnik Projects are due on November 15. November Vestnik Projects are due on December 15. December Vestnik Projects are due on January 15.

Quarterly and Merit Reports Due December 15 Please make every effort to submit your quarterly and merit reports before December 15. This is the second quarterly report for September, October, and November. Those of you that email the electronic quarterly report into the youth office need to submit the sign-in sheet with the electronic file. This took the place of the youth

having to initial the paper quarterly report. You can send the sign-in sheet by scanning the page and mailing or faxing to my office. The fax number for the Fraternal Department is 254-7747447. These reports help to determine the funding your youth club will receive at the spring meeting and how much money your district receives for its youth activities. Youth clubs that do not submit their quarterly and merit reports on time will lose out on their incentives. This can mean losing hundreds of dollars for your youth club.

100 Pennies Scholarship Drive This year’s goal is to raise $20,000. This is in addition to the allocation which the Supreme Lodge has made. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Thanks to all of the young people and youth clubs who contribute to this wonderful program. If you have not contributed in the past, please consider doing so this year. Remember that no contribution is too big or small. All young people who donate at least $2 will receive two merit points. All young people who donate at least $5 will also receive a certificate.

Veterans Day Please take time and remember our Veterans at your next youth club meeting in November. Veterans Day is Friday, November 11.

Thanksgiving Smart

Friends and family come together on Thanksgiving to enjoy good company and good food. The big game is on in the living room and that crazy uncle of yours is yelling at the coach. Grandpa is doing his best to eat the deviled egg population. Suddenly, you see him clutch his throat and turning pale. What do you do? Your actions could save his life. Thanksgiving is the annual holiday of over eating and the opportunity to find ourselves in the emergency room rather than the living room or dining room at home. Here are just a few tips to help keep your holiday safe. Know some basic first-aid. If someone is choking be prepared to use the Heimlich Maneuver. From behind, wrap your arms around the person’s waist. Make a fist, placing the thumb side of your fist against the person’s abdomen, below the ribcage and about the navel. Grasp your fist with your other hand and press into their upper abdomen with a quick upward thrust. Repeat until object is expelled. Remind your parents when they are preparing to carve the turkey a sharp carving knife is a safe knife. Dull blades are more likely to slip and cause a nasty cut to the user. Keeping the kitchen utensils clean can prevent an overnight stay in the bathroom or emergency room. Wash all surfaces with soap and water. Make sure you avoid cross-contamination of cooking utensils and cutting boards. Kitchen fires, such as grease fires are very dangerous and you should never use water to put out the fire. Use a pan lid or baking soda to contain the flames. Better yet, buy a dry chemical fire extinguisher for the kitchen. If you decide not to cook and visit relatives, be smart on the road. Drive carefully and stay alert. There are plenty of other folks who will be tired, stressed or otherwise distracted while driving. The holidays are a great time to visit and catch up with loved ones. Do your best not to spend that quality time with a doctor or nurse at the local hospital.

Tommy the Turkey is getting ready for Thanksgiving. Help Tommy have the right information to keep his family safe this Thanksgiving season by filling in the blanks and answering the questions below.

1. If someone is choking be prepared to use the _________________ _______________________.

2. Remind your parents when they are preparing to ____________ the turkey a sharp carving knife is a _____________ ______________. 3. Keeping the kitchen ___________________ clean can prevent an overnight stay in the bathroom or emergency room. 4. Wash all surfaces with ____________ and ______________. Make sure you avoid cross-contamination of cooking utensils and cutting boards. 5. Kitchen fires, such as _______________ ______________ are very dangerous and you should never use water to put out the fire. 6. If you decide not to __________ and decide to visit relatives, be smart on the road. Drive ______________ and stay alert.

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club Shares October Events

Dear Readers, October has been busy - filled with outdoor events starting with an outing to Six Flags the first weekend in October. We all had a great time - until the monsters came out - some of our little ones were willing to leave early; however, our teenagers stayed till midnight to enjoy Fright Fest! A big thanks to our district for the season passes! The next fun day our youth attended was Heritage Day at the State Fair which was held October 16. We are baking strudels again for the upcoming holidays so be sure and place your order by calling Betty Macalik at 972-878-7719 or Margaret Krajca at 972-878-6149. On October 22, our youth served tea at the benefit held for David Trojacek. The event was a huge success thanks to all of you who donated your time, talent, and treasures. Next Meeting—November 6 Our next meeting will be Sunday, November 6 at 1:30 p.m. See you then! Fraternally yours, Rita Holland Youth Leader —SPJST—
