Feeling Special, Sharing Time, Making a Difference

On Sunday, October 30, Lodges 29, Taylor Youth Club and 47, Seaton Youth Club hosted a bingo hour at the S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Facility in Taylor for Make a Difference Day which is an annual community service event to improve the lives of others. “We entertained 23 residents playing 50 cent bingo,” Lodge 29 Youth Leader Cristy Girod said. “The youth and some adults dressed up in Halloween costumes for an extra bonus!” Afterwards, youth handed out Halloween treats and a bag of goodies filled with items like toilet paper,

paper towels, hand soap, sanitizer, and tissues that residents can use in their apartments. Cristy encourages others to remember S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living. “If you’re ever looking for a place to donate to, please keep these special people in mind.” The youth clubs received a sweet thank you card from the residents expressing their gratitude, she said. “Our goal for this outing was to make the elderly feel special and to show our youth the importance of sharing their time and making others feel good.” —SPJST—

Together, we can fulfill our mission of “Insuring and Enriching Lives”

By Hiram Dixon Supreme Lodge Vice President, FICF, LUTCF, CFFM

SPJST, along with most of the fraternal life insurance societies, has experienced a decline in membership over the last few years. Since 2007, SPJST’s membership has declined 15 percent. While SPJST is a very strong and financially sound society, we need to increase our membership. Our goal for 2017 is to issue 1,825 certificates. To accomplish this goal, we are asking you, the members, to help us. Over the past several years, we have obtained referrals from members and placed the names of the referring member in a drawing for a $25 gift card. Once a month, we draw three members’ names from those who have referred someone to us. Since January 2016, we have received 233 referrals from SPJST Home Office staff and from our membership. As a result of the referrals, we have issued 98 new certificates, or 42 percent of the referrals. Fraternal Field Manager Phil McBee speaks often of the love we all share for SPJST and that we all want SPJST to grow and prosper. He has an idea that is quite simple but extremely effective. SPJST has 40,921 members. If 15 percent of our members refer one prospective member in 2017, we will have 6,138 referrals! And, if we only issue 25 percent (instead of 42 percent) of these certificates, we will have 1,534 new members. This would help us achieve the 1,825 goal for 2017. It is easy to refer a prospective member. Contact us at the Home Office 1-

800-727-7578; call your SPJST sales agent or your Fraternal Field Manager; or send an email to info@spjst.org. Where can you find these prospective members? They are your family who are not insured with SPJST . . . people you know from your church . . . folks that you do business with . . . fellow employees . . . people from other organizations. All we ask of you is to tell them the SPJST story and how much you have enjoyed SPJST fraternalism and how secure you feel owning life insurance or annuity certificates with SPJST. Once we receive your referral, one of our sales agents will contact the prospective member. Our sales agents are well trained on SPJST’s products, and they understand how to match the correct insurance product to members’ and prospective members’ needs. Our portfolio of life insurance and annuity products are superior because of the added value of fraternalism. First and foremost, we are a life insurance society that can and will deliver on our promise that through our life insurance programs, we offer peace of mind. With the stroke of a pen, we can create an immediate estate at the time a family needs it the most — monies so that the home is paid for, leaving a deed not a debt, education for the children, clothing, food, all the necessities of life for years to come. I challenge each of you to refer just one person for membership in SPJST, and together, we can fulfill our mission of “Insuring and Enriching Lives.” —SPJST—

s we count our blessings this Thanksgiving, we count ourselves extremely lucky to have members and Vestnik readers like you. Thank you for making this year a great success. We wish you a very happy Thanksgiving and a joyful holiday season.

Six Stories Thanks to Lodge 79, Corpus Christi President Mark Rebecek for sharing these six stories. What a great way to live life!

Once all villagers decided to pray for rain. On the day of prayer all the people gathered, but only one boy came with an umbrella. That’s FAITH. When you throw babies in the air, they laugh because they know you will catch them. That’s TRUST. Every night we go to bed without any assurance of being alive the next morning, but still we set the alarms to wake up. That’s HOPE. We plan big things for tomorrow in spite of zero knowledge of the future. That’s CONFIDENCE. We see the world suffering, but still we get married and have children. That’s LOVE. On an old man’s shirt was written a sentence, “I am not 80 years old; I am sweet 16 with 64 years of experience.” That’s ATTITUDE. —Author Unknown VESTNIK

Readers shares “Navajo Code Talkers” and “Solid Gold Heroes”

Let’s give some credit where credit is due. This is from Southwest Indian Foundation Catalog at www.southwestindian.com.

“Navajo Code Talkers” It was one of the best kept secrets of World War II. For over 23 years, their special mission retained a “top secret” classification. They are the Navajo Code Talkers. The Navajo made an invaluable contribution to the War through the development of the Navajo language as a secret code that proved indecipherable to the enemy. Major Howard M. Connor, communications officer for the Fifth Marine Division commented, “Without the Navajos, the Marines would never have taken

Iwo Jima.” We salute their remarkable achievement!

“Solid Gold Heroes” On July 26, 2001, President Bush awarded the Congressional Gold Medal to the original Navajo “Code Talkers” for their success in relaying secret military messages that baffled the Japanese, saved thousands of lives, and helped win World War II. Originally, only 29 Navajos were selected to be trained as Code Talkers. The code was developed after the attack on Pearl Harbor when it was discovered that United States military codes had been broken by the Japanese. The overwhelming success of the code caused it to remain classified a full 23 years after the end of World War II. Frank L. Chovanec Lodge 29, Taylor —SPJST—

Lodge 40 El Campo-Hillje: save the date Sunday, Dec. 11

Hello, Members, and Greetings from SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje! This letter is in reference to our second annual prize drawing to help to maintain, repair, and update our lodge building. With the funds raised from last year’s project, we were able to complete the lights, rewire the inside of the building, and finish the event lights for the outside security of the building. We also repaired and maintained the building as needed. This was accomplished - thanks to your support and donations last year. Funds are down in the lodge’s account, and we cannot rely exclusively on the annual SPJST stipend and the few contracted rentals to financially support the lodge and the building. With every building, there are monthly and annual costs, repairs, and continued updates to maintain. We hoped to raise enough last year to purchase liability insurance, but that wasn’t possible. So our struggle continues. With that being said, we will be hosting a prize drawing. For Lodge 40 to succeed and to keep the building, we need your support. If any member of the lodge or anyone you know would like to support the project, please contact Raffle Chairman Norma at 979-637-1507. Next Meeting—December 11 The drawing will be held Sunday, December 11, 2016, after the monthly meeting which begins at 1 p.m. This will be family day at the lodge so we invite all members to attend. We pray for SPJST,

Lekce jedenadvacátá Lesson 21 Sedm pádů The Seven Cases

What is a case? A case is the form which shows the function of a noun, adjective, or pronoun, in the sentence, and its relation to other words in the sentence. There are seven such cases in the Czech language.

1.Nominative, or subject case— první pád Answers the questions: kdo?— who? (is the doer of, or subjected to, some action?); co?—what? (lifeless object or event is something said about?)

Example: Kdo tam chodí? Karel tam jde. (Karel is in the nom. case). Co se tam deje? Schůze se tam koná. (schůze is in the nom. case). * * * * *

2. Genitive case—druhý pád This case has a function similar to the English possessive case, (my friend’s house, or the house of my friend). The genitive has acquired a wide range of meaning besides the basic sense of belonging. It answers the questions čeho?—of what?; čí?—whose?

Example: Z čeho je to výraběne. Ze železa a z litiny. Čí je to pučík? Je to pučík mého otce. (Otce is in the gen. case.) * * * * *

3. Dative case—třetí pád This is primarily a case of direction marking end or result towards which an act proceeds. It is, therefore, used after the verbs. Giving, sending, saying, or writing, something to someone. It answers the questions komu?—to whom?; and čemu?—to what?

Example: Komu píšeš? Píšu domu tatínkovi. (Tatínkovi is in the dative case). Čemu posloucháš. Poslouchám vysilácí stanici. (Stanici is in the dative case). * * * * *

4. Accusative, or direct object case—čtvrtý pád It marks the receiver of the action or the thing acted upon by the subject. It answers the questions koho?—whom?; and co?—what?

Example: Koho’s tam viděl? Vidél jsem tam mého přítele. (přítele is in the acc. case). Co tam vidíš? Vidím moji matku. (matku is in the acc. case). * * * * *

5. Vocative case—pátý pád It is used for addressing or calling to a person or a thing. Example: Bratře Novátku! Otče můj! Matko má!

* * * * *

6. Locative or prepositional—šestý pád It is always used with prepositions. It cannot stand alone. It expresses

position in time or space. It answers the questions kde?— where?; o kom?—about whom?; or o čem?—about what?

Example: Kde je Marie? Sedí na schodech. (na schodech is in the loc. case). O kom mluvíš? Mluvím o tetičce. (O tetičce is in the loc. case.) O čem se jednalo? Jednalo se o různých bodech. (o různých bodech is in the loc. case). * * * * *

7. Instrumental—sedmý pád It expresses the means, way, manner, instrument, or casual condition. It answers the questions (s) kým?—with whom?; (s) čím?— with what? All of the following endings are in the instrumental case.:

Example: Čím jel do Ameriky? Letěl letadlem. (letadlem is in the instr. case).

Presenting the 2016 Collection ofLegend, Symbol, and Tradition Ornaments

The ornaments and stories introduced today explain the symbolism of three cute little animals, the ladybug, and the spider. Animals have played a crucial part in ancient Christmas celebrations, symbolizing the age-old norms and traditions of the festival. Some of the stories that have developed over the years date all the way back to the origin and birth of Christianity. The legend of the ladybug dates back to the middle ages in Europe. As the story goes, hordes of insects invaded the grapevines which were owned by several lords. The insects ate their way across fields, causing total devastation. The serfs, the lords, and all the ladies prayed to the Virgin Mary for help because they feared their food crops would be totally destroyed. Shortly thereafter, thousands of little red and black beetles appeared. The beetles ate all the invading insects and the crops were saved. From that time forward, these beetles became known as “Ladybugs” in honor of Mary, also known as “Our Lady.” The Ladybug is a symbol of good luck. Stock # LR-22 - $6

The pig is a symbol of wealth, luck, and prosperity. According to German tradition, enjoying roast pork on Christmas Eve will prevent evil and promote prosperity in the New Year. Czechs also partake of pork, not only on Christmas Eve, but often during the year to insure their good luck and financial prosperity. Piggy banks are traditionally given to children to encourage them to save their money for future needs. This whimsical little pig, with a Christmas scarf around his neck, may be purchased for $12. Stock # LP-18 - $12

Historically, the owl, with its thoughtful and solemn appearance, has been the symbol of wisdom and virtue. Owls are credited with providing forewarning and good counsel. They teach us to be observant. If one would slow down and observe life, he would

be amazed at how much life goes by when a person is constantly running around. The owl’s eyes adjust in an instant from telescopic to microscopic, allowing him to look into the past, present, and future with uncanny accuracy. Comparisons have been made between the owl’s visual ability to pierce the darkness and the light of Christ dissolving the darkness of the world. Stock # LO-28 - $17

The turtle symbolizes protection, longevity, endurance, persistence, and the continuation of life. The turtle is one of the oldest living animal ancestors, with some fossils documented at over 200 million years old. Because of its seemingly wide-eyed, long-lived, carefree attitude, the turtle is often thought to be the wisest of souls among the animal kingdom. We would do well to move at a slower pace as the turtle does. Turtles carry their homes on their backs. If the turtle is flipped onto its back, it can right itself, using its strong neck and head to flip over. It is a reminder to us to use our heads and knowledge to right ourselves when our world gets turned upside down. The turtle also reminds us to remember our roots while still welcoming new places and phases in life. It teaches us to appreciate life’s simple, true necessities of shelter, food, drink, and most importantly, faith. The turtle has faith that it will eventually get to its destination, in spite of its slow gait, always confident that its needs will be met. Stock # LT-17 - $12

The Legend of The Christmas Spider tells about a poor widow who could not afford to buy gifts for her children, but still wanted them to have the best Christmas ever. So, the night before Christmas, the day on which the Christ child came to bless the house, after putting her children to bed, she cut a tree, excitedly decorated it, and placed it in the house for her children to enjoy in the morning. She had cleaned the house thoroughly; not a speck of dust remained to be seen. After having done so much work, she

was exhausted and soon fell asleep. The spiders, who had fled to the attic, were curious to see the decorated Christmas tree. So the oldest and the wisest spider suggested that they sneak out of the attic to have a look at the beautifully decorated Christmas tree. Once the attic door was opened, the light was so bright that the spiders could not adjust to it, so in order to see every decoration on the tree, they quickly made their way out and they started climbing all over the tree, leaving trails of a dull gray web behind them. Eventually, the entire tree was covered with dusty gray spider webs. When the Christ child came and saw what the little spiders had done to the Christmas tree, he became quite worried that the mother would not be happy to see her decorated tree covered with webs. He loved the little spiders, but he knew the mother wanted her children to have a fun time around the beautiful tree. He touched the dusty webs that the spiders had left behind and turned them into sparkling, shimmering gold and silver. When the family woke up, they found a Christmas tree glittering with gold and silver. The story of the Christmas spider has taught us that when we work hard, and with good intentions, our efforts do not go unnoticed. Commemorating this legend, to this day people decorate their trees with glittering tinsel and include an artificial spider on the tree. Stock # CB-22 - $9

These ornaments may be purchased in the TCGS gift shop, located in the lower level of the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street, Temple, Texas. In addition to the Christmas Open House on Monday, December 5 from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., we will be open from December 5 to 9 and December 12 to 16 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. To order for shipment, please send an email to Nancy Machu nbmachu@aol.com or call 512-218-1559. “The Accidental Hero” comes to College Station

The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station is welcoming Patrick Dewane to Rudder Theatre on Friday, November 18 at 7 p.m. to perform his one-man show called “The Accidental Hero.” As we look ahead to the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Patrick Dewane presents the dramatic retelling of the story of his grandfather, Matt Konop. Konop was raised on a family farm outside a small town in rural Wisconsin, speaking Czech as his first language. Konop found himself fighting in Europe in World War II, eventually becoming a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army. When he returned after the war, he never spoke of his war experiences, not even when asked by his grandchildren many years later. When he died in 1983, his family assumed Konop’s stories of war were buried with him. However, 20 years later his unpublished memoirs were found in a box in a basement along with a treasure trove of pictures, videos, and other memorabilia. Unbeknownst to his family, Konop had spent some of his latter years writing his

war stories for posterity. Through a mix of dramatic presentation, old photos, and rare World War II film footage shot with a home movie camera, Dewayne created a one-man show that tells his grandfather’s story – in his grandfather’s words. The tale is a journey through landing on Omaha Beach, facing off with Nazi soldiers in the Ardennes Forest and liberating the small Czech towns where his ancestors lived. For more information, visit http://www.accidentalhero.net/ Join us as we welcome Patrick Dewane and the heroic story of Matt Konop, an intimate glimpse into the life of a World War II soldier on Friday, November 18 in Rudder Theatre at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum at 1000 George Bush Drive West in College Station. We would like to extend this invitation to all SPJST members. Reservations are strongly encouraged.
