ll of us have our own favorite reasons for attending SPJST District Fall Fun Days. In a very real way, they represent extensions of our home and community life and are an opportunity to bring our larger, fraternal family together and to celebrate our common bonds. Having enjoyable experiences together cements relationships and brings families — even fraternal families — together. The lasting memories that grow out of a well-planned district meeting are worth the time and effort. With those thoughts in mind, what a wonderful time we all had at the District Six Fall Fun Day held on Sunday, November 6, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Parish Hall in Hallettsville. Thanks to all of the men, women, boys, and girls who turned out for the event which included

Congratulations to Lodge 202, Jourdanton member Frances Kovar who celebrated her 101st birthday on November 18, 2016. “She is a special lady,” Lodge 202 Reporter Bettie House writes. Best wishes to Frances!

a delicious barbecue dinner catered by Kolacny’s Bar-B-Q House of Hallettsville, adult competitions and youth ornament contests and the svačina program. For the benefit of those who were unable to attend, I am compelled to comment just a little about svačina program: We had a blast! By its very definition, the Czech word svačina is derived from the old Czech word “svak,” which originally referred to a meeting or get-together of friends and acquaintances. On this particular Sunday, svačina was all about intertwining reminiscing, music, fun, and games — and food. Thanks to my wonderful svačina program co-presenters: State FAC Frank Horak and State Youth Director Lynette Talasek. Thank you, too, to SPJST Fraternal Field Manager Delisle Doherty for the timely presentation on SPJST life prod-

“you had to be there.” While a picture may be “worth a thousand words,” it doesn’t do justice to the lively program which featured the Czech Heritage Museum “show and tell” game, clothespin drop game, Czech trivia contest, and the “What Am I Saying in Czech” game and concluded with an introduction to and hands-on lesson in the art of constructing Czech “Obložené Chlebíčky.” More explanation: Translated from Czech to English, “Obložené Chle-

While there are open-face sandwiches made throughout the world, the Czech chlebíčky are special because of their combination of ingredients, side variety of tastes, and their eye-appealing presentation. Originally introduced at the Paukert Deli in Prague in 1916, the little sandwiches have been growing in pop-

The District Six Fall Family Fun Day was held Sunday, November 6, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Parish Hall in Hallettsville, Texas. The gathering was hosted by Lodges 4, Hallettsville and 63, Sweet Home. District Six Director Karen Kaspar led the blessing of the food, and a delicious catered meal was enjoyed by all. The fall fun day gave District Six members an opportunity to participate in bar cookie, needlework, and ornament contests. Special guests from the SPJST Home Office presented a wonderful afternoon program on “The Czech Svačina.” District Six President Joe Siptak (4) called the members to order and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Lodge 63, Sweet Home President Diane Ward welcomed 78 members and guests to the annual fun day, thanked the caterer for the delicious meal, and thanked all the lodges for bringing desserts. First Vice President Annie Vahalik responded by thanking Lodges 4, Hallettsville and 63, Sweet Home for hosting the get-together. She then introduced special guests attending. District Six Director Karen Kaspar, State Youth Director Lynette Talasek, State FAC Frank Horak, District Six Fraternal Field Manager Delisle Doherty, and Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek were welcomed by the membership and thanked for spending the day with District Six. District Secretary Wanda Dorotik (30) called the roll for the district officers,

lodges, and standing committee members. There were nine lodges represented at the district fun day: Lodges 4, Hallettsville; 8, Weimar; 10, Shiner; 23, Moravia; 28, East Bernard; 30, Taiton; 40, El Campo-Hillje; 63, Sweet Home; and 151, Wharton. President Siptak introduced Home Office guests Brian Vanicek, Lynette Talasek, and Frank Horak to present the Czech Svačina program. Svačina goes back in history and members Ardis Bacak (40), Vlasta Bartosh (40), and George Janik (8) shared their family get-together experiences of long ago. Brian Vanicek introduced members to games played during svačina. All enjoyed competing in games and guessing the name of antique items, Czech phrases, words, and facts. Afterwards, members were introduced to obložené chlebíčky and encouraged to make themselves a little open-faced sandwich for an afternoon snack. During a break, Delisle Doherty made members aware of the importance of updating insurance policies. President Siptak announced the spring meeting will be hosted by El Campo-Hillje on April 2, 2017. Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six performs at Lodge 18, Elgin By Justin Everett • Lodge 47, Seaton

On Sunday, November 13, 2016, Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six played a polka dance at SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin. Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six have been performing polka and country music throughout the state of Texas for more than 30 years and are still going strong. If you didn’t attend, you missed out. Fritz and the boys played a great show! The band opened their performance with the polka favorite “Corn Cockle.” The dual saxophones that were played on the song made it sound even better. The band also played a beautiful rendition of “Pretty Dancing Girl Polka,” and just when I thought they couldn’t get any better,

9

they wowed everyone with their version of “Starlight Waltz.” The boys even got the polka fans two-stepping with famous country numbers like “Big City” and “Fraulein.” There was also delicious Texas food to keep your stomach from rumbling such as mouth-watering hamburgers and hickory-smoked barbecue sandwiches. A big thanks to all of the Lodge 18, Elgin workers who helped with concessions and tickets. Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six will look forward to seeing everyone at their next polka dance and will be ready to play more beautiful music. —SPJST—

Lodge 40 El Campo-Hillje family day Sunday, Dec. 11

Hello, Members, and Greetings from SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje! This letter is in reference to our second annual prize drawing to help to maintain, repair, and update our lodge building. With the funds raised from last year’s project, we were able to complete the lights, rewire the inside of the building, and finish the event lights for the outside security of the building. We also repaired and maintained the building as needed. This was accomplished - thanks to your support and donations last year. Funds are down in the lodge’s account, and we cannot rely exclusively on the annual SPJST stipend and the few contracted rentals to financially support the lodge and the building. With every building, there are monthly and annual costs, repairs, and continued updates to maintain. We hoped to raise enough last year to purchase liability insurance, but that wasn’t possible. So our struggle continues. With that being said, we will be hosting a prize drawing. For Lodge 40 to suc-

The November 2016 meeting of SPJST Lodge 81, Needville was held on Sunday, the 20th. roll. Added to our sick list were Dorothy Blinka and Ed Kuban. We wish you both a speedy recovery. Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read her report, and it was approved as read. Treasurer Bradley Stavinoha read his report, and it was approved as read. Seth Sacra read his special funds report, and it was approved as read. Since we didn’t have any old business, we went straight to new business. Under new business, Seth announced that he would like someone to take over the hall maintenance position. His schedule is too full for him to commit to the hall full time. Also under new business, Treasurer Bradley Stavinoha wrote a historical document of our lodge. He suggested making it into a small sign and attaching it by the doorway of the lodge. Everyone was enthusiastic about this idea. Next, under new business, we elected officers. They are the same as follows: President Vincent Newman Vice President Jeanette Newman Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall Treasurer Bradley Stavinoha Special Funds Chairman Seth Sacra

Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall mentioned that we should send money to the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund. Everyone agreed. Last, we talked about our Christmas. Jeanette Newman will deliver a case of peaches to the S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Center in Needville. Willie Mae Kuykendall and Jeanette Newman will make some Christmas bags to hand out at the meeting. We also decided to have 20 door prizes.

Door prize winners were Darlene Blinka, Emma Kujawa, Bradley Stavinoha, and Karen Rust. Congratulations to our lucky winners!

Next Meeting—December 18 For the next meeting on December 18, it was decided to have honey-baked ham and sausage. Members, please bring a side dish and a dessert. See you at the next meeting! Fraternally, Jeanette Newman, Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 88, Houston members had the pleasure of attending the 54th Annual Veterans Day Memorial Service in Praha, Texas, on November 6, 2016. Edward Marek, cousin of Lodge 88, Houston member Fred Buri, was one of the fallen World War II veterans who was eulogized at the event. “Everyone needs to go to this,” Lodge

vember 10, 2016, in the Sokol Club Room. Several arrived at 8 a.m. We stretched Kay Lynn Kovar’s tie quilt, made coffee, and started tying. There were members all around, and we were through around 11 a.m. Thank you to everyone who worked on it By lunchtime, we had 17 members and one guest - Joe Kostak. He brought in the delicious turkey. President Irene led us in grace, and we all enjoyed the most wonderful lunch. Dorothy Kudrna had the turkey

baked and sliced. Irene made the dressing, and everyone else brought the other dishes and desserts. I can’t list them all, but thank you to everyone. It was simply great! Thank you also to the set-up and clean-up crew. After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for Leslie Mach, Jan Glaspy, Andrea Diehl, John Novak, and Luther Scott. The “Our Father” was recited for the alone and sick members. Secretary Ann read the minutes of the last meeting, and a minor correction was made. The treasurer’s report was given by President Irene as Dolores Vrana was absent. Sunshine Lady Dorothy Prachyl had cards for us to sign. One was for Geraldine Zhanel’s birthday and a thinking of you card for Geraldine Kubin, who is in the hospital. Let’s all keep Geraldine Kubin in our thoughts and prayers. We signed cards for Kay Lynn Kovar for the loss of her father and for Willie Matus in the her loss of her mother-inlaw. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Martha Ritchey and Maggie Holy birthday celebrants. Dorothy also read a thank you card from Stella Tobola for us remembering her 100th birthday. She used to be a member. Pat Fowler announced that there’s no quilting in December; we will party! We will quilt for President Irene in January 2017. If anyone has a quilt to quilt, please let Pat know.

President Irene announced that she will start a learning-how-to-make-ababy-quilt session in January. If anyone is interested - new members, too - you are most welcome to join us. President Irene worked on the cookbook. Several helped her sort pages and put them into folders. I didn’t get all their names, but thank you so much. A motion was made and approved that we reimburse Irene for ink cartridges, paper, and folders. Libbie and Kay Lynn donated some paper and some money for folders. Thank you all. The club received recipes and money for dues from Joyce Ehrimberger in North Carolina. Thank you so much, and we miss and think of you often. President Irene read a funny article called “Lunch With the Girls” that I received from Wilma Frankie Vrla with my birthday card. That was cute and funny, Wilma; I really enjoyed it. Kay Lynn has volunteered to purchase our Christmas shut-in gift bags, items, and cards. We all signed the cards, and the items were really nice. Thank you! We discussed our Christmas lunch, and we voted for the Circle to purchase ham. Ann volunteered to bake it. Everyone else is to bring dishes and desserts to complement the ham. It will be good; it always is. It was discussed that since we don’t have many quilts to quilt next year that we make lap quilts for our shut-inmembers. Everyone thought that was a good idea. Libbie announced that some of the material in our Christmas quilt was donated by Willie Mae Becan from Fort Worth who recently passed away. She was a very thoughtful and sweet lady, always donating items. President Irene’s tip of the day was,

“When making quilt tops, if you don’t know, ask and don’t be afraid to ask. Iron or press all squares, if the machine is not working right, change the middle, rethread the needle, and if you’re still having problems, just walk away.” President Irene announced the next meeting and the Christmas party will be December 8 - Irene’s actual birthday. We will meet at 10 a.m. Bring your food dish and a $10 gift with your name on it, that is if you want to exchange gifts, and plenty of cash. We will play bingo, have a prize drawing, and play the 50-50 dollar game. We will also be collecting dues. In other news, Pat Fowler is so proud of her two grandsons Justin and Jacob and rightly so. Justin Mraz is an Ennis Junior High student in an agricultural mechanical class who won a showmanship award at the State Fair of Texas in 2015. His brother Jacob Mraz won the same award this year. Jacob and his partner built a bean bag toss wood board set and won second in his class. How great is it that the two brothers won the same award two years in a row. Now you can see why Pat is so proud of them. Congratulations to both! I forgot to mention our 50-50 dollar winner - Margaret Martinek. We are happy for you! We wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving. Enjoy the cool weather and hope to see everyone on December 8. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

Fort Worth Friendship Club

Members of the Fort Worth Friendship Club met Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at St. Thomas Dining Room for their Thanksgiving social and luncheon. President Margaret Sears called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. The theme was Thanksgiving, and Rose Ann Spann and Lola Taylor were thanked for all the decorations. Our guest was Judy deGrandchamp, friend of Rose Ann. Secretary Mary Ann Krivanek read the minutes from the last meeting, and Treasurer Jo Ann Wilcox gave the financial report. Both were accepted as presented. Sunshine Person Marie Keller reported she sent a get well card to Shirley Martin who had open heart surgery and is doing real well. Margaret Honnig, chairperson of the nominating committee, reported her committee of Elizabeth Creamer and Barbara Becknell nominate Barbara Becknell as president, Lola Taylor, vice president, Mary Ann Krivanek, secretary, and Margaret Sears, treasurer, of the Friendship Club for 2017. President Margaret asked if there were any nominations from the floor, and there were none. Thereafter, motion was made and seconded that the four that were nominated be elected by acclamation. Margaret was thanked for her services as president for the past two years, and Jo Ann Wilcox was thanked for her services as treasurer for the past five years. The new slate will assume duties January 1, 2017. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to November celebrants Tracy Horn, Elizabeth Creamer, and Mary

Agnes Ward. May you have many more. Lots of sad news: It was announced that our longtime member Willie Mae Becan passed away on October 27 at the age of 95. For the past few years, Willie Mae had been living in the nursing home. This week we learned that another longtime member Ella Marie Greer passed away on November 14 at the age of 92. Ella had not been able to come to our meeting for the past year or so due to health problems. Ella and her sister, Ann Conner, always made the most picture perfect delicious cakes for our meetings. If they were not able to come or didn’t bring a cake, we always reminded them that they and the cakes were greatly missed. Also this week, we learned that Margaret Sears’ brother, Alvin Lee (Al) Underhill, age 71, was riding his bicycle in Denver, Colorado, was hit by a car and killed on November 13. Services will be in Colorado. I have just learned that Rose Ann Spam and Stanley Krenek niece’s husband, Robert Cummings, died at age of 57 of a massive heart attack. Robert was the son of the late Linda Krenek Thom. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to all four of these families. May their souls rest in peace. Non-perishable food items were brought for St. Thomas Food Pantry. It was a huge pile, but we don’t know the number of items or pounds contributed. Thanks, members! Everyone certainly enjoyed the turkey, dressing, and gravy—prepared by Mary Ann Krivanek—and all the other side dishes which complimented the turkey. Thanks, Mary Ann and all you others — we have the best chefs in Fort Worth in our Club. Hopefully, Harold and Adele Strand, who recently moved to the Trinity Terrace Retirement Home from Waco, will

be able to come to our next meeting. We had several door prizes and the 50/50 dollar game. All winners went home happy. Our Christmas social/party will be December 7. For those who wish to participate in the gift exchange, you need to bring a $10 gift, and I believe it was decided we would play the Mr. Right/Mr. Left game which is always fun as most of us get our right hand mixed up with our left hand. It was voted to give a monetary gift to the two priests at St. Thomas Church. Our menu will consist of ham, and members should bring items to complement the ham. I made a mistake last month. Tracy Horn’s great niece Lori Nemec who was visiting here, lives in Australia—not Germany. I just remembered Tracy had someone living in Germany at one time, and just assumed this was the same person. Tracy, thanks for correcting me. Helen Skrasek, Debbie and Gary Skrasek, and their son Steven and Michelle Skrasek, and their daughter Jaycie, will travel by train to Oklahoma before Christmas to celebrate the holiday. This will be Jaycie’s first train ride, and she is so excited. Jaycie sure is a cutie, I saw her at SPJST Lodge 92 on Heritage Day and at the Skrasek family reunion. Following the meeting, grace was said, and a wonderful turkey luncheon was enjoyed by all. To me, the first turkey, dressing, and gravy of the holiday season is always the best. Thanks to everyone who served as hostesses. Games were then played, and a good time was had by all. The next meeting is December 7 so don’t forget to bring a dish to share, and gift if you wish to participate in the gift

exchange. Also, wear something red or green, and I’ll bring my camera so we can take a group photo. Maybe Melanie, Vestnik Editor, will print it. See you at the Christmas party/social/meeting. So Until, Keep Smiling, Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

Howdy, everybody! It’s been a busy fall playing football. My team and I made history this season by being the first Snook team to make it to the playoffs and to round two since Snook got varsity football in 2010. In the first round, we faced off against Rock Springs at the John Gupton Stadium in Cedar Park. We defeated Rock Springs 30 to 29. We battled Flatonia in the second round at Brenham

Cub Stadium. Unfortunately, we lost, but it was an amazing season. I’m extremely proud of my team and the coaching staff and all that we accomplished! Here are a few pictures from the season. I’m excited about my next royal duty and can’t wait to see everyone again. Colby See 2016-2017 State King —SPJST—

Dear Readers, On Sunday, September 11, 2016, Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club held its annual Grandparent’s Day and awards banquet at New Tabor Hall. We enjoyed good food, fun, and fellowship. A big thank you to all the grandparents who attended. Submitted by Dillon and Macy Narro —SPJST— TOP PHOTO: We love our grandparents! LEFT PHOTO: Awards table and grandparent gifts. Dear Vestnik Readers, What a fun and exciting District Two activity we had on Saturday, October 15, 2016, in Austin. Forty-four youth enjoyed jumping along with other activities Urban Air provided. Everyone had a great time. There were a few of the 20ish adults who also got a good workout. Of course, you couldn’t count Cristy, Amber, or myself in that group! A big appetite was definitely worked up, and we continued on to CiCi’s Pizza and enjoyed good pizza and drinks. It was so good to see some of our group again. We missed those of you who could not attend. Thank you, Cristy, for organizing this event. It was awesome!

Save the Date—February 25 Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 25 as we will be having our first district activity of 2017. We will have the traditional February skating party at Wheels Family Activity Center in Temple. Due to the change of private parties for weekend rentals, our skating party will be held from 10 a.m. to 12

noon. The event will be followed by lunch and continue with the District Two Youth Development Workshop. The workshop is open to all youth members. Parents are asked to also attend for a review of Youth Achievement Day (YAD) rules and how to properly complete YAD cards. Questions on any project youth may want to enter will be answered at this time. The workshop will be held until 4 p.m. The skating party door prizes will be given out at the workshop. This is a very important day to learn more about the youth program. Please make plans to attend. Watch the Vestnik for more details. I hope each of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. As you read this letter, think of 10 things you are most thankful for and share them with your parents, a sibling, or a friend. October was Czech Heritage Month, and the youth of Lodge 9, Snook found many ways to promote our Czech heritage.

Kolache Festival In September, both circles of beseda dancers participated in the Kolache Festival in Caldwell.

October Meeting Speaker The speaker at the October youth meeting was Ms. Laini Lewis. Laini is 14 years old and has lived in the Czech Republic since the age of five when her

family moved there to become missionaries. Laini spoke to our club about her life in the Czech Republic, her school, the foods they eat, the castle that sits on the hill above their town, and how she teaches English classes to the youth in the Czech Republic. Her family is currently on their six-month stateside visit so Laini is attending the fall of her freshman year at Snook High School. Laini’s grandparents, Harry and Shirley (Jakubik) Lewis, both grew up in Snook so she now has the opportunity to get to know many of her cousins.

Beseda Performance at World Fest Beseda dancers also performed at the Texas A&M University World Fest in College Station on November 5. Dozens of cultures came together to present different aspects of their ancestry. Some danced, others cooked traditional foods, played games, and made crafts from the home country. The costumes were beautiful, and it became a game trying to guess what country everyone was from. Submitted by, Grace Lewis, President —SPJST—

Tips to Land a College  Scholarship

(StatePoint) If you are college-bound or already enrolled, experts say it’s worth investing the time to investigate scholarship opportunities — even if you think you may not be eligible for most opportunities. According to a recent study, more than a third of college costs in the United States were covered by scholarships and grants in the 2015-2016 academic year. “Scholarship money doesn’t have to be paid back, and it can significantly reduce outof-pocket college costs for families,” says Martha Holler, senior vice president at Sallie Mae, who also points out that scholarships are not just for star football players and valedictorians. From scholarships for dart players and vegetarians to filmmakers and those fluent in Klingon, available awards run the gamut and extend well beyond academics or athletics to a wide range of activities, interests, and affiliations. “Have a passion for designing greeting cards? There’s a scholarship for that! Interested in helping people understand the perils of texting when driving? There’s a scholarship for that too,” says Holler. With this in mind, Holler and the experts at Sallie Mae are offering the following scholarship tips. • Be thorough. Don’t overlook smaller scholarships. Even a few hundred dollars can

Approximately 50 percent of available scholarships are for students already enrolled in college. • Be diligent. Pay attention to details. Follow instructions and proofread carefully. • Be careful. Parts of Speech Zájméno - Pronoun

You remember that in the study of English, a pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. In Czech, there are seven types of pronouns:

1. Personal — já, ty, on, ona, oni, ony, my, and vy. 2. Possessive — můj, tvůj, jeho, její, náš, váš, etc. 3. Demonstrative — ten, ta, to, tento, tato, toto, onen, ona, ono. 4. Interrogative — kdo? co? který? jaký? čí? 5. Relative — který, jenž (who, which, that), kdo, co 6. Indefinite — někdo, některý, nějaký, kdo-si, co-si. Quantitative pronouns: každý, všechen; sám, sama, samo, týž, táž, též — latter all expressing identity. 7. Negative — nikdo, nic, žádný .

8

,

1. Personal pronouns The longer forms — mne, mně, tebe, tobě — are used in emphasis and after prepositions. The shorter forms — mi, mě, tě, ti — are used when no stress is needed, and are used after the stressed word.

Psal mi. Znáš mě? On mi psal. Ty mě znáš? There is a special reflexive pronoun — se — for all three persons, singular, and plural.

Zpráva ze schůze řádu Jaromír SPJST č. 54. ve Westu, Tx Jan Vaculík

Pravidelná čtvrtletní schůze našeho řádu Jaromír Slovanské podporující jednoty státu Texasu se konala dne 4. listopadu 2016 v síni svatého Josefa při osadě římskokatolického kostela Nane bevstoupení Panny Marie ve Westu, Tx. za příjemného počasí a hojné účasti členstva. President Freddie Kaluža zahájil schůzi, Ernest W. Nors přivítal všechny přítomné, včetně presidenta 3. okrsku Johna Klinkovského a manželky Diany. Složili jsme přísahu americké vlajce a republice, pro kterou stojí. Uctili jsme památku nedávno zemřelého člena Ernesta W. Norse Ernest W. Nors se narodil 29. září 1935 Aquille, Tx. Henrymu a Antonii (rozené Hejl) Norsovým. Navštěvoval starou Aligátorskou školu nedaleko Westu a maturoval z Aquillské střední školy v roce 1953. —SPJST—

Presenting the 2016 Collection ofLegend, Symbol, and Tradition Ornaments

Texas Czech Genealogical Society introduces six more of its 2016 collection of Legend, Symbol, and Traditions ornaments. The ornaments are available in the TCGS Gift Shop located in the lower level of the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street, Temple, Texas, or by contacting Nancy Machu at nbmachu@aol.com or calling 512-218-1559. According to legend, bells rang throughout the world on the night that Jesus was born. The shepherds gathered together and journeyed to meet this newborn child. As a blind boy heard the rumors of the Baby’s birth, he begged the travelers to lead him to the Christ child, but no one wanted to be bothered with this little boy. After the crowd had passed, and the air became quiet, the boy heard the sound of a cow’s bell in the distance. The little boy walked toward the sound of the ringing bell and he found the newborn baby. Bells play a significant role in the joyous Christmas season. They often accompany carolers, and they have called the faithful to worship for centuries. Stock # LB-19 - $9

Who doesn’t enjoy giving and receiving Christmas gifts? At Christmas, a most joyous time of the year, families and friends in all corners of the world give presents to those they love. This tradition came about because of the greatest gift ever given: God gave the world the gift of His only Son! John 3:16 says, “God so loved the world that He gave his only Son, that whomsoever believes in Him may not be lost, but

The hummingbird symbolizes love, joy, wonder, and beauty. It has the ability to hover in place for long periods of time as it flaps its wings about one hundred times per second. It is capable of traveling great distances, and it can also fly backwards. The hummingbird, with this unique ability, suggests to us that we can look back at our past without dwelling there as we continue moving forward. Just as the hummingbird hovers while drinking nectar, we can be reminded to savor each moment in life, appreciating its sweetness. Stock # LH-20 $10

The Christmas Key is made of brass, showing the three-piece nativity, Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus. A poem, “The Christmas Key,” is written on the reverse side of the ornament. It reads: “Santa, there’s a special key that’s hanging on our Christmas tree; you may have seen this key before and wondered what it’s really for. “It’s not the key to any toy, but it’s the key to love and joy; it may not make an engine start, but it will fit most any heart. “We hope you’ll find His presence here, tonight, and all throughout the year; we hope and pray that you will see that Jesus really is the key. “So Santa, on this Christmas Eve, whatever else you might believe, we hope that

The red cardinal, known as the Christmas Bird, holds special spiritual meaning. The red color symbolizes the blood of Christ and the hope that humanity gained from his resurrection. The crimson color can remind us of the importance of ourselves as individuals in the circle of life. As the cardinal’s red color is symbolic of faith, it can remind us to “keep the faith” through circumstances that might look bleak, dark, and hopeless. Stock # LC-23 - $11

The historical journey of the legend of Santa Claus is longer and more fantastic than his annual, one-night trip around the world. The modern Santa was born in the Mediterranean, evolved across northern Europe, and finally assumed his non-familiar form on the shores of the New World. Originally, St. Nicholas was a scary gift bringer, fiery, wiry, and a defiant defender of church doctrine during the “Great Persecution”, when Bibles were put to the torch and priests made to renounce Christianity or face execution. After the Protestant Reformation, saints like Nicholas fell out of favor across much of northern Europe. The people from the Netherlands brought “Sinterklaas” to the New World. During the early decades of the 19th century, poets and writers strove to make Christmas a family celebration by reviving

and remaking St. Nicholas. Washington Irving’s 1809 book, Knickerbocker’s History of New York first portrayed a pipesmoking Nicolas soaring over the rooftops in a flying wagon, delivering presents to good girls and boys and switches to bad ones. In 1821, the modern Santa began to take form. That figure brought gifts to good girls and boys, but he also sported a birch rod, which parents were to use when a child refused to mind. Santa’s wagon was pulled by a single reindeer. Both driver and team got a makeover the next year. In 1822, Clemet Clarke Moore wrote what became known as The Night before Christmas, and to this day, the plump, jolly, bespectacled, red-suited elderly man, known as Santa, rides a sleigh driven by eight familiar reindeer delivering gifts to good girls and boys.
