75 Years Ago . . . Remembering Pearl Harbor . . . Dec. 7, 1941 By Greg Bowen New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung December 6, 2012 Photos by Laura McKenzie

Editor’s Note: This story by Greg Bowen appeared in the December 6, 2012, issue of the New Braunfels HeraldZeitung. Pearl Harbor survivor and World War II veteran Emil Matula joined SPJST on December 12, 1946, and was a 67-year member of SPJST Lodge 133, San Antonio when he passed away on December 27, 2013. Brother Matula served on the SPJST Publication Committee from 1976 to 1988. His wife Evelyn passed away on November 21, 2016. Emil Matula was there, 75 years ago today, when the Japanese attacked Pearl

Harbor. The 94-year-old remembers firing a pistol up at the Zeros as the enemy fighter planes strafed his barracks on the infamous morning of December 7, 1941. “I have no idea if I hit one,” he said. “They were too fast.” Matula was a 23year-old United States Army sergeant stationed at Schofield Barracks, one of the Pearl Harbor airfields targeted in the Japanese surprise attack. Matula and his buddies on the 35th Infantry’s football team had played for the base championship the day before the at-

tack, and had stayed out late celebrating, even though they’d lost the game. The Granger farm boy with a sixthgrade education was sleeping that Sunday morning when the first wave of attackers rained down their torpedoes and bombs and bullets. Matula, remembering, holds out his hand and makes a side-to-side rocking motion. “My bunk was doing like this,” he said. He ran outside in his skivvies and watched the attackers come. “The planes flew right between the barracks and shot at us. They flew in so low I could see the Japanese pilots squeezing their trig-

he Christmas and holiday season has officially begun. Here are a few fun jokes to share at the next lodge, work, or family Christmas party!

What does Santa suffer from if he gets stuck in a chimney? Claustrophobia! Why does Santa have three gardens? So he can ‘ho ho ho’!

Why did Santa’s helper see the doctor? Because he had a low “elf” esteem!

What kind of motorbike does Santa ride? A Holly Davidson!

What do you call a cat in the desert? Sandy Claws! Who delivers presents to cats? Santa Paws!

What did the sea say to Santa? Nothing! It just waved!

Who is Santa’s favorite singer? Elf-is Presley!

Why are Christmas trees so bad at sewing? They always drop their needles! VESTNIK

Member enjoys Czech svačina program

Dear Members, My daughter Mary Ann Cerny and I attended the District Six Fall Meeting on Sunday, November 6, 2016, hosted by SPJST Lodges 4, Hallettsville and 63, Sweet Home. Thank you all for the hospitality; it was great. The program on the Czech svačina given by President Brian Vanicek was interesting. I realized I still know the Czech language. You did a good job. Thank you. Vlasta Bartosh Mary Ann Cerny Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje —SPJST—

Member disappointed about discontinuation of SPJST Calendar

Dear Vestnik Editor, I must say I am very disappointed in reading the November 9, 2016, Vestnik to learn that the 2017 budget cut includes no longer having an SPJST Calendar. Many people plan ahead for yearly events within and outside SPJST. The SPJST calendar is the place to turn to. There is so much more within the calendar other than dates . . . having a face to a name when someone calls the Home Office, recipes, knowledge of the insurance products we have to offer, Czech vocabulary, the youth program, flag etiquette, and much more. As a District Youth Counselor, I am very saddened to know that our youth who work so hard in the royalty completion and participate at State YAD will no longer have their picture on a calendar they hang proudly in their homes and in the homes of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends. What a wonderful memorable honor to each of them who can pass this on for generations to come. I have a calendar hanging in my office, and as patients check out, many make comments regarding the wonderful SPJST organization. They ask questions, and I am ever so proud to go into detail. I

can remember how my parents looked so forward to receiving the calendar. If it was not in the mailbox on the day they thought it should be there, my mom was calling the Home Office to see if it was lost in the mail. I do hope the officers and board will find another way to cut costs and allow the SPJST Calendar to continue with the tradition of our Czech heritage. Patsy Koslovsky Lodge 47, Seaton District Two Youth Counselor —SPJST—

Svačina program well received at District Six Fall Fun Day

Dear Readers, Sunday, November 6, 2016, Lodges 4, Hallettsville and 63, Sweet Home cohosted the District Six Fall Fun Day at St. Mary’s Church Hall. We had a great attendance, delicious food, and lots of participation from both the youth with their ornament contest and raffle booths and the adults with their food, needlework, and ornament contests. The highlight of the day was the svačina program and mini museum of various contraptions (what else, for example, would you call something that looked like a ball and chain but was really used to keep a calf from running off) from the

Czech Heritage Museum. Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Horak, and State Youth Director Lynette Talasek presented the fun, interesting, and engaging program that told the story of the svačina from early days to modern times. We played games centered around our Czech culture and language. They explained the items that they had on display from the museum with an amusing game. While some people knew what the contraptions were, some did not and came up with some fun uses for the items. All through the presentation, their was laughter and lots of reminiscing about good old Czech traditions and family stories. It was wonderful to see the crowd enjoying the afternoon and participating in the games and winning prizes. After the presentation, Brian, Frank, and Lynette prepared some modern svačina that was definitely Pinterest-worthy (as my daughter would say). Many

compliments were received about the fun and interesting program. Everyone seemed to enjoy the day, and as many people were leaving, they remarked that it was one of the best programs. I encourage other lodges and districts to take advantage of this fun, educational, interesting, and, of course, delicious presentation. Brian, Frank, and Lynette work well together, and you can tell that they really enjoy doing the program. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the District Six Fall Family Fun Day a tremendous success. We had lots of tasty desserts and door prizes. The weather was nice. The change to daylight saving time was a little confusing to some, but I enjoyed the extra hour. Fraternally, Annie Vahalik Lodge 4, Vice President/FAC District Six First Vice President —SPJST—

= = = Fraternal News = = = State FAC shares December fraternal updates

Fraternalist of the Year Nominations It’s time to start thinking about selecting your lodge’s fraternalist of the year for 2016. This is your chance to recognize a stand-out individual who through example and accomplishment, provided outstanding service to your lodge or community this past year. This year, we will be recognizing your lodge’s fraternalist at your district spring meeting. There will not be a statewide incentive event in January 2017. Please know that your local lodge fraternalist of the year may be chosen in a variety of ways. You decide the method that works best for you. The main emphasis should be on making sure that all adult members ages 16 or older be considered without bias. Individuals previously honored by your lodge may be honored again if they meet your selection criteria. The main thing to remember is that SPJST has a lot of great volunteers within our ranks, and we want to give credit where credit is due. The form for submitting your fraternalist of the year has also been greatly simplified. Thanks for tending to this item at your October, November, or December meeting.

If you have any questions, please give me a call.

SPJST Outgoing Officers With the election of new officers, do not forget to honor your officers who have given their time and dedication to your lodge. Honor your outgoing leaders by giving them an outgoing officer plaque. Any officer who is not elected to serve in 2017 and does not seek reelection in future years is eligible. The recipient must be a current SPJST member and must be active at the time of selection. The plaques should be awarded at your local lodge meeting.

SPJST Lifetime Achiever Award The definition of lifetime is the duration of a person’s life. This award is to recognize individuals or couples who have made a significant impact in their lodge’s success and growth over a lengthy period of time. Those individuals or couples should be of a mature age. In the past couple of years, the Home Office has received nomination applications for many young members that still have many years of service to the lodge and its members. Think about it . . . if a young or middle aged member receives this award, is this telling them that they have achieved their significant impact to their lodge and here on out they are finished contributing to their lodge and its members?

Important Paperwork Everyone please know that the forms listed below are very important in receiving your enhanced premium refund and other incentives. Please return these forms even if there are no changes from the previous year. Fraternal Activities Coordinators, it is very important to enter and complete your hours by January 13, 2017, to receive those refunds and other incentives. Please look for the 2017 New Officer Listing form to be mailed out the first week of November from Receptionist Tamara Gettys. This form needs to be completed and turned in as soon as possible to the Home Office. All other deadline dates remain the same. They are:

January 2, 2017—New Officers Listing form — address, phone listing and emails January 13, 2017—Year-End Fraternal Incentive Reporting Hours February 24, 2017—Outgoing Officer Awards May 15, 2017—990 and 990-T to IRS and copy to Home Office

100 Pennies Scholarship Drive Began October 1 Everyone spread the word! October 1 started the SPJST 100 Pennies Drive to benefit the scholarship fund. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive will run through March 31, 2017. SPJST Scholarship Program The deadline for submitting all scholarship paperwork for the SPJST Scholarship is no later then Monday, February 1, 2017. Any student (high school seniors and college undergraduates) who have not previously received a scholarship are eligible to apply. For an SPJST General Scholarship or Leadership Grant application and complete guidelines, please call Executive Assistant to the President Sandra Dubcak in the SPJST Home Office at 800-727-7578 or 254-773-1575 or visit www.spjst.org.

Progressive “42” Domino Tournament The first SPJST State Tournament of 2017 will take place on Saturday, January 14. This will be the Progressive “42” Domino Tournament to be held at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. Please include in your New Year’s resolution to become actively involved in all state and local lodge activities in 2017. For additional details about the tournament, visit www.spjst.org. Tarok Tournament The SPJST State Tarok Tournament will

be held on Saturday, February 6. The tournament will be held at SPJST Home Office in Temple. Please visit www.spjst.org under Fraternal Activities/State Tournaments and Fraternal Activities. All participants are encouraged to pre-register so we can figure out the amount of food to prepare for the noon meal.

Lodge 18, Elgin offers great dancin’ time!

Great Dancing in Elgin! What a great time everyone had in Elgin for the Fritz Hodde dance . . . not a bad crowd . . . considering many of our regulars were on a cruise with the Mikulas and the Dujkas. Ernest and Lois Maschmeyer from Austin brought a great crowd to celebrate their 70th anniversary. We are so glad you chose Lodge 18, Elgin hall to celebrate your anniversary. We know Fritz Hodde was your choice. We think Fritz and his band are up there with the best. Gary and Margaret Brewer from Austin were there to celebrate their 52nd anniversary. Gary and Margaret are regulars at our SPJST hall. Thank you for celebrating with us.

November - Election Time November is election time so we had a great meeting although we didn’t have many attend. Jeanette Peterson has been cleaning the kitchen and closets. Thank you Jeanette; the hall is looking good. Charles Wilson, F.L. Meyer, and David Meyer have been busy with repairs and keeping the hall going. Thanks, guys; I know you could use some help. Rental contracts are being looked at to see if they are up-to-date, and if we need changes. Thank you, board members, for keeping on top of everything. The December meeting was discussed. We will serve a light meal to show our appreciation to the dedicated members who help this hall keep going. You know attending meetings is important; you can’t have a meeting if no one is there. We are looking forward to the Christmas parade; the SPJST float will be in Elgin for the parade. We were sad to hear another member has passed away. Our prayers are with the family of Aleen Jaekes. When we become wise, our lives are lived from our hearts. Irene Vrabel, Reporter —SPJST—

Hello, Members, and Greetings from SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje! This letter is in reference to our second annual prize drawing to help to maintain, repair, and update our lodge building. With the funds raised from last year’s project, we were able to complete the lights, rewire the inside of the building, and finish the event lights for the outside security of the building. We also repaired and maintained the building as needed. This was accomplished - thanks to your support and donations last year. Funds are down in the lodge’s account, and we cannot rely exclusively on the annual SPJST stipend and the few contracted rentals to financially support the lodge and the building. With every building, there are monthly and annual costs, repairs, and continued updates to maintain. We hoped to raise enough last year to purchase liability insurance, but that wasn’t possible. So our struggle continues. With that being said, we will be hosting a prize drawing. For Lodge 40 to succeed and to keep the building, we need your support. If any member of the lodge or anyone you know would like to support the project, please contact Raffle Chairman Norma at 979-637-1507. Next Meeting—December 11 The drawing will be held Sunday, December 11, 2016, after the monthly meeting which begins at 1 p.m. This will be family day at the lodge so we invite all

Texas Fraternalists Meet in Houston for Workshop, Annual Meeting

Dear Members and Friends, This past year, I had the great honor and privilege of serving as president of the Fraternal Alliance of Texas (FAOT). The FAOT, formerly known as the Texas Fraternal Congress (TFC), was established in 1900 as a cooperative forum to provide its member organizations — fraternal benefit societies operating within the state of Texas — an opportunity to meet with each other on an annual — and as needed — basis to report on the activities of their fraternal life insurance operations, to address areas of common concern and to introduce attendees to pertinent items — most notably regulatory and insurance underwriting issues — facing fraternal benefit societies on the national level. As a result, attendees learned from their peers and were better equipped to address the fraternal life insurance needs and fraternal service needs of their members through their respective societies. It’s still that way today! The 2016 FAOT and Texas Association of Fraternal Insurance Counsellors (TAFIC) Business Development Workshop and Annual meeting was held October 27 to 29 at the Omni Hotel at Westside in Houston. Our objective was to present a program seeped in relevance and one that would stimulate discussion and positive action. Thanks to our great presenters and broad participation by Texas fraternal leaders, I’m happy to report that the esprit de corps was in abundant supply! SPJST delegates included Vice President Hiram Dixon, Director of Accounting/Information Technology Services Roy Vajdak, District One Director/Supreme Lodge Chairman Donnie Victorick, District Two Director Jesse Pospisil, District Three Director John Engelke, District Five Director Bradley Stavinoha, District Six Director/Supreme Lodge Vice Chairman Karen Kaspar, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Horak, Human Resource Administrator Debbie Klinkovsky and me. Thanks, too, to the SPJST spouses who were able to attend, namely Sister Janice Victorick, Sister Linda Pospisil, and Sister Becky Vajdak. SPJST delegates enjoyed the opportunity to visit with their peers on topics ranging from corporate branding and CGAD (Corporate Governance Annual Disclosure) to market economies and non-verbal communication. A great big thank you to Texas native son Patrick Dees for his participation and attendance throughout our three-day event. Brother Dees is executive vice president of WoodmenLife — soon to be presi-

dent — and the immediate past chairman of the American Fraternal Alliance Board of Directors. It was my great privilege to co-present one of the Thursday morning sessions with the presidents of the Texas-domiciled fraternal societies — Mike Belz (Catholic Life), Chris Urban (KJT), Buddy Preuss (Hermann Sons Life), and Brian Vanicek (SPJST). Joining us on the state level was Pam Strickland, KJZT Vice President, who sat in on behalf of KJZT President Loretta Stahl during the session. To the best of my knowledge, this was the first session of its kind ever! We must do this more often! What a treat, too, it was to hear from — and visit with — Douglas Supak, FIC, LUTCF of La Grange, Texas, on Friday morning. As many SPJST members in Fayette County know, Brother Supak is an inspiration within the Knights of Columbus organization. As a testament to his fraternalism, he was cited last year by both the American Fraternal Alliance and the K of C as FIC (Fraternal Insurance Counsellor) of the Year. Speaking of inspiration, that must also be said for our Friday clean-up presenter Matt Jones. Matt, a world class speaker and presenter invited — “demanded” might be a better description — attendees to shuck their seeming adversities and excel to new heights of performance. Thank you, Matt — wherever you are — for that moving presentation and to 2016-2017 TAFIC President KJT President Chris Urban for making sure that we had Matt on our program! That goes “double” for securing Non-Verbal Communications Specialist Jan Hargrave! A great big thank you also goes out to our two Gold Sponsors: Allen Bailey & Associates and Parkway Advisors for their generous financial support of our workshop and annual meeting. On a related note, thanks, too, to Allen Bailey,

President and CEO, and Doug Brown of Allen Bailey & Associates for presenting during the Thursday afternoon session “Positioning Your Fraternal Benefit Society for Meaningful Long-Term Growth.” Thanks, too, to Theron Holladay, Sr, President and CEO of Parkway Advisors for helping to lead that session. Thank you, too, to the presenters that joined us long-distance via Skype and Polycom: Bob Arzt, president of Polaris One and Insurance Coach U; American Fraternal Alliance CEO Joe Annotti; and American Fraternal Alliance Directors of Advocacy and Public Policy Melanie Hinds. Farewell to Colleen Jenke — outgoing FAOT Secretary-Treasurer — and to her faithful support and husband, Chester Jenke. It was a great run, capped off by the reinstatement of the FAOT’s 501(c)(3) status in 2016! On a related note, congratulations and welcome to incoming Secretary-Treasurer Cheryl Kolbe of Hermann Sons Life — and congratulations to our new 2016-2017 FAOT President Kim Krueger of Hermann Sons Life. In closing, special thanks to our dear SPJST for allowing me to serve as president of the FAOT for the past year. Thanks, too, to Brother Frank Horak and Sister Debbie Klinkovsky, for their ablebodied assistance throughout the past year — and in preceding years — on matters related to the FAOT. Moving forward, the FAOT has a continuing and crucial role to play on behalf of Texas fraternal leaders in promoting best practices, disseminating information, and acting as a coordinated voice when talking to the government on matters relevant to the preservation and evolution of the fraternal benefit system. Matula, a buck sergeant, was the ranking man. “I gave the order to chop off the lock,” he said. The men grabbed fire axes and broke into the supply room and claimed their weapons and ammo. “I was worried,” he said. “In peacetime, you get court-martialed for doing that.” But peacetime had ended for Matula and his fellow American fighting men. When the second and final wave of Zeros attacked, the soldiers were ready. “We had machine gunners on the roof,” Matula said. “Some of the men had rifles. I had a pistol. This time we fired back when they strafed us.” Matula remembers an officer giving an order to ready Schofield’s airplanes for bat-

Christmas Ornaments from Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s Gift Shop

In my final message for 2016, regarding the Legend, Symbol and Traditions ornaments, the Texas Czech Genealogical Society wishes to present other exquisite ornaments that would be wonderful additions to your tree this year and that are available, first come, first served, in our gift shop, located in the lower level of the SPJST Home Office, 520 North Main Street, Temple, Texas. Our gift shop will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday until December 16. In addition to our beautiful glass Christmas ornaments, we also offer a large selection of other items, suitable for Christmas giving. This snow-covered church with its steeple was made in the Czech Republic. It makes a wonderful reminder that Christmas is a Christian event, and what better place to celebrate that holiday than in the church. Stock # CO15206 - $12

The white, snow-covered house resembles the church without the steeple. It too was manufactured in the Czech Republic and would make a beautiful addition to every Christmas tree. Stock # CO15044 - $13

The Czech flag ornament has been a favorite for several years. Every Czech family should have a Czech flag on its Christmas tree. Stock # CF-1 - $6

This beautiful oval ornament in light blue matte glass with white and glittered accents shows the church and the home on one side, and on the reverse side, in white glittered letters, it proclaims “Merry Christmas.” Stock # CO15369 - $15

Tom Sefcik built the hall in 1923. It hasn’t changed much. The downstairs tavern floor is the one Sefcik installed 80 years ago.

19

A matte white opaque ornament depicting the Holy Family in the Nativity Scene. The picture is in black and gold. Stock # HFN -25 - $20

This ornament’s scene is the same as the one above, however the background color is a beautiful, dark cobalt blue with drawings in gold. Stock # HFNG - $20

Reindeer are symbolic of good fortune and joy in abundance. They are happy creatures who are most closely associated with Santa Claus, especially Rudolph and his team who fly around the world, pulling Santa’s sleigh and resting on rooftops as Santa climbs down the chimney and leaves presents for good boys and girls.

Legend says that the night that Christ was born a little brown bird shared the stable with the Holy Family. During the night, Joseph built a fire to keep the family warm, but as they slept, the fire burned out. The bird flew down from its nest and fanned the dying embers with its wings. It went so close to the fire that the heat turned the bird's feathers red. The robin’s breast has been red ever since to remind us of its love and compassion for the baby Jesus. Stock # RB11 - $11

The tradition of painting eggs developed in the Eastern European countries. It was begun as a result of the people’s desire to exchange Easter presents. In many countries, eggs were symbols of eternal life and were a reference to the tomb from which Christ arose. Several other sizes, colors and designs of eggs are available in our gift shop, and they range in price from $12 to $20.

These gorgeous, handcrafted ornaments are exquisite in design and color. All of them are available in the TCGS Gift Shop until December 16. We look forward to your visit. For questions, please contact Nancy Machu at 512-218-1559 or by email at nbmachu@aol.com.
