Presidential Perks

You have no idea what kind of perks come with being president of SPJST Lodge 180, Burleson until you have had a chance to walk in my shoes. I have the pleasure of doing special things for other folks, and that surely gives a nice feeling. On the morning of Thursday, December 15, 2016, I had the honor and privilege to deliver cake, assorted doughnuts, and pigs-in-a-blanket to some excited Burleson Police Officers. I do not per-

Pictured with their boxes of cake, doughnuts, and pigs-in-a-blanket are Burleson Police Officer Travis Brown, left, Officer Tiffany Bauereisen, and Sergeant Roger Hall. The treats were delivered to Burleson PD by Lodge 180, Burleson President/Reporter Nancy Kelly.

sonally know the three police officers who accepted the goodies, but it was an honor to meet them. The police officers were so surprised and excited to receive the treats. They were anxious to enjoy them with their early morning coffee before the day started. Let us not forget what the Blue do for us on a daily basis. —SPJST—

Six Mile VFD plans to build a fire station on the land. Pictued at their quarterly business meeting on November 8 are, left to right, Carolyn Rokyta, Vice President/FAC Larry Rokyta, Treasurer Norma Elder, President Franklin Jurek, Secretary Mary Sitka, and Dan Sitka.

Foundation donors to be recognized at banquet

We sincerely thank the many SPJST lodges, sponsors, corporations, and individual members that have generously contributed to the SPJST Foundation during 2016. Your contributions directly benefit the vision of the SPJST Foundation, an IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization. The SPJST Foundation vision is to assist projects which seek to keep alive the cherished traditions, customs, heritage, and language of SPJST’s forefathers. The SPJST Foundation encourages and supports strong family values, pride in our community, and good stewardship. The SPJST Foundation supports the growth and development of the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple and the SPJST Education and Nature Center in Fayette County. The Czech Heritage Museum exhibits range from 16th century family heirlooms to frontier Texana to contemporary European art. During 2016, your donations helped to provide an excellent museum experience for the 1,200 visitors and the careful preservation of their valuable artifacts. In addition, the SPJST Education and Nature Center goal is to substantially increase the usage of the property on a year around basis and to provide additional programs for children, youth, and adults

to connect with the environment and nature through camp and education experiences. Their desire is to become the premier camp destination for our SPJST members and the surrounding communities and organizations. In the spring of 2017, The SPJST Foundation will publish the names of all 2016 SPJST Foundation donors in the weekly Vestnik publication, and invite those individual donors and lodge representatives to the annual SPJST Foundation Donor Recognition Banquet. The first banquet is scheduled for Saturday, July 8, 2017, at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. If you or your lodge have not already contributed this year to the SPJST Foundation, but would like to do so, please mail your SPJST Foundation contribution check by December 31, 2016, to: The SPJST Foundation c/o James Lee, III Director of Development PO Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503

Readers Write

Member: SPJST  calendar is special; will be missed

Ms. Zavodny: I really did enjoy your editor’s column passed on from Carol Laycock about “there is no Santa.” That is so true . . . Christmas is about giving, not receiving. Thank you for “giving us” SPJST members your editorial talents in each issue of the Vestnik! I also saw that the SPJST calendar was not budgeted for the coming year. How sad! I consider it one of my “fringe benefits” of my SPJST membership. I have used it every year since I first became a member in 1980. When I received my first calendar in 1981, it earned a special place hanging on the inside door of my kitchen cabinet within easy reach. Why? It is easy to find so I can write down doctor/dental appointments, meetings, birthdays, anniversaries, upcoming weddings/ showers—all those important dates in my life. Also it has such good recipes, and each year, I immediately look at them when I receive it marking the ones I definitely want to try, and usually making most of them! It is a new annual cookbook for me! I go back to calendars from years ago to prepare special cakes, cookies, and pies from those calendars. I am now retired from teaching high school social studies, but it was a teaching tool for me with the flag etiquette section in it. I referred to it on numerous occasions and still do for the flag display dates. I have kept many copies of previous

calendars since when my children were small. It was also handy to write down special happenings in their lives, like first steps, first tooth pulled, etc. The calendar was always handy in my cabinet, and I could write that event on it and get the baby book out later to transfer the information. So you see, that SPJST calendar was and is special to me and will be missed by me tremendously. It has been a part of my life history, and I would like for it to continue to be. I’d even be willing to pay a “price” for it, if it can’t be offered for free any longer. I give away many of the calendars I receive in the mail, but never, never my SPJST calendar! It also reminds me of my Czech roots, and I dearly treasure those roots. I looked forward to receiving my 2017 calendar, and hopefully in the years ahead. On another note, I’d like to suggest that in the “Let Us Study Czech” section of the Vestnik (which I enjoy, try to complete, and save), there could be an added section with the English translation to the Czech written sentences and verses. I try to translate them, but never know if I am correct or incorrect . . . I guess the teacher in me wants to grade myself. Just a suggestion. . . Thanks for all the work you do on a daily basis to keep the Vestnik coming to SPJST members. I look forward to each edition. May you, your family, and all who work in the SPJST Home Office enjoy a blessed Christmas season and New Year! God bless you! Shirley Drexler Moczygemba Lodge 32, Victoria —SPJST—

We had several guests - Judy deGrandchamp, friend to Rose Ann Spann, Laurie Dawson and Alma Feil, friends of Mary Agnes Ward, Elizabeth Creamer and Barbara Becknell. It was so nice to have Camille Bolcer back with us after a long absence, and she looked great. President Margaret welcomed all. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by everyone. Our tables were all decorated in the Christmas theme, and the arrangements were then given away as door prizes. Thanks to Lola Taylor and Rose Ann Spann. A moment of silence and prayers were said for the deceased - Lola Taylor’s husband, Margaret Sears’ brother, nephew of Rose Ann Spann and Stanley Krenek, and Ella Greer, our longtime member and sister of Ann Connor.

The Spirit of Christmas

Expression of Sympathy

by d.knape

Every once in a while you come across something so unusual it makes you stop and take a breath to marvel at everyday miracles

like the red Pyracantha bush that I found growing wild out in the woods from a distance it looked like a decorated Christmas tree all shiny and bright its berries twinkling like ornaments on a tree

it was just waiting to be discovered its crimson color so deep and glossy contrasted with the surrounding foliage of beautiful dark green made it the perfect symbol of Christmas all dressed up in its finery as cheerful as a Santa Claus waiting for visitors

for anyone who had the curiosity to find it hidden out in the woods all by itself it brought the beauty of the season home and made me realize that Christmas can be anywhere and anyplace all we have to do is look and we will easily find it

The spirit of Christmas is all around for in our hearts is where it’s found. —SPJST—

DANA. Leroy J. Dana, 82, of Seaton died peaceably in the arms of his Savior on Monday, December 12, 2016. Visitation was held Friday, December 16 from 1 to 2 p.m. The celebration of life service was from 2 to 3 p.m. at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple. Pastor Terry Atkins officiated. A private graveside service will be held at a Leroy J. Dana later date. Leroy graduated from Temple High School in 1953 and soon after graduation, he joined the 49th Division with the National Guard in Temple. In 1960, the 49th Division was mobilized to Fort Polk, Louisiana, for extensive training due to the Cuban Crisis. Roughly a year later, after things settled down and the troops demobilized, Leroy returned home to Temple. Leroy served eight years and upon doing so retired from the military to tend to his family which included two-year-old Karen, and soonto-be born Kim. Upon his return, Leroy returned to Wilsonart where he had been employed before leaving for Fort Polk. Leroy joined the Wilsonart Team in 1956 and was one of the originals that joined the company when it was new to the area. He retired after 38 years of loyal service, due to health issues. After a long rest, his health was restored and was able to enjoy vacations and took many cruises that he enjoyed to the fullest. Leroy loved all sports and always kept up with the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers. He was quite the athlete himself as he loved playing baseball and was called many times by local teams to play in summer leagues around the area. He never refused a good offer. He played with the old Cen-Tex League, one being the Seaton Pearls for seven years and two years with the Westphalia Farmers. He played softball, fast pitch, and slow pitch for the Wilsonart Team

for 25 years. Leroy loved to bowl, for a night out with the guys. He bowled on the Wilsonart Bowling League for 30 years. He later became an avid golfer and golfed with his buddies in tournaments, etc. for many years. He also enjoyed many outdoor activities such as deer hunting and would grab a pole to go fishing at any given time. Leroy was a lifelong member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. He received the Lifetime Achiever Award in 2007. He was on the board of directors from 2004 to 2015. He served on the rules and regulations committee and served as a delegate to the state convention in 2004, 2008, and 2012. He loved serving as chairman of the cooking committee to fry the chicken for the annual picnics for many, many years for the lodge. Within the past few years, Leroy moved his church membership to Salem Lutheran Church in Rosebud, where he felt at home for worship. Leroy married the love of his life, Geraldine Dornhoefer of Zabcikville, on June 27, 1959, at Salem Lutheran Church in Rosebud. From this union, he had two daughters, Karen Jo DanaAlves and Kimberly Kay Dana-Yepez. The Life of Werner Ahrens, as told by his grandchildren

Werner Ahrens of SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville passed away on December 1, 2016. This was written by Dayna Mendez and Cameron Ahrens. Dayna is the oldest grandchild, and Cameron is the youngest grandchild of Werner and Clara Bell Ahrens. Clara Bell and all of their grandchildren are also members of Lodge 107, Floresville.

On the evening of Thursday, December 1, 2016, about 10 o’clock, heaven gained another angel—my grandfather, Werner Ahrens. He was surrounded by his loving wife Clara Bell Ahrens, son Randall Ahrens of Fashing, son Calvin Ahrens and wife Leslie of Cuero, and son Darwin Ahrens and wife Ellen of Luling. He was truly a Werner Ahrens blessed man. He also leaves behind grandchildren Dayna Mendez of Dallas, Benjamin Ahrens of La Grange, Philip Ahrens of San Marcos, and Cameron Ahrens of College Station, and great-grandchildren Jude Mendez and Lorelai Ahrens. My grandpa was a gentle, kind, and selfless man. He truly loved his family and friends. Based on all who attended his visitation and service, I think we could all feel that love! He was the fourth son born to Rudolph Ahrens and Elizabeth Hoffman Ahrens on November 3, 1926. He grew up with older brothers Raymond, Harold, Leland and younger brother Elo in the New Bremen community. He went to school in the New Bremen community until eighth grade and went to high school in Karnes City in the ninth grade. At the time, his father who was only 55, become ill and died. Werner had to then quit school to help keep the family farm running. He continued to help at home. One fateful day, Thanksgiving 1949, while at a dance in Three Oaks, he met the love of his life, Clara Bell Heinsohn. She said when she first met him, she only danced one dance with him and sat down. She felt like she was too young for him - she was only 15 at the time. She said that he thought she was older. It wasn’t until a year later that she agreed to dance with him again. And, that’s all it took. They

began the dance of a lifetime! They dated until they married on November 16, 1952. They celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in November. Dancing is something they both really enjoyed. Sometimes in later life, they’d go dancing three times a week: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. He loved “um pa pa” music, dancing polkas and waltzes. He loved to watch Mollie B on television and seeing other people dance to his favorite music. They made numerous friends at dances, even making a trip to a polka fest in Wahoo, Nebraska, with them. While there, they danced for three days straight. At his golden wedding anniversary, I think he danced every song but one . . . nonstop! With all that dancing, who needs aerobics? His life was not always fun and games though. When the drought of the 50s hit, times definitely got rougher. The family could no longer rely on farming to make a living. During the day, he would work on the farm. At night, he helped build the flood control dams around Kenedy, to make ends meet. During 1955 and 1956, he worked at Kenedy Iron Works where he learned to weld. This talent came in handy later in life when we had to repair broken-down equipment and build cattle pens. During the 50s, he could not raise a field crop, but the strong winds that came along with the drought definitely helped with one thing . . . that was to turn the windmill so there was much water to help the garden grow. Grandma said that was the most beautiful garden they ever grew! Not only was he interested in growing a beautiful garden, but also growing his family. It was in 1956 when he had his first son, my dad Calvin. —Dayna

Once the drought broke in 1959, Opa went back to farming full-time, ranching, and raising pigs. During his many years of farming, he grew milo, flax, sunflowers, cotton, redtop cain, corn, and wheat. My grandfather was always looking for ways to get over the crops quicker and tried to conserve fuel. He converted tworow planters into four-row planters and several years later converted four-row to six-row. Werner was one of the first farmers in Fashing to get a Farmal H, which was one of the first tractors to have a road gear. One of his neighbors, Herbert Collowey, was astonished when he saw how fast the tractor came down the road. In 1960, with the drought breaking, he realized he needed more help on the farm. That is when his second son, my dad Darwin, was born. In 1962, when the flax froze off, he tried his hand at planting cotton. That

Wednesday, December 28, 2016

year, he yielded 49 and one-half bales of cotton. With the uncertainty of how the year and harvest would go, he looked to find other jobs to help support his family. One of the many extra jobs he did was measuring the allotments for peanuts and cotton. The boys especially enjoyed this time because several times their dad would come home with the trunk full of watermelons. The boys never knew where they came from, but they sure were good! In 1966, the Ahrens household grew again with the addition of their third and final child, Randall. In the late 60s and early 70s, Werner had the privilege of leasing more land. By then, he had his laborers - his sons. The boys were all too familiar with going down the rows to remove the sunflowers and johnseed heads, throwing them in a bag and taking them to the burn pile. They all rejoiced when Roundup was invented! In 1970, they bought the family farm where they live now. Werner did all of the remodeling of the family home. He kept the tools by the back door. Whenever it rained or even drizzled, he would come in the house and get as much done as he could that day. He totally remodeled the house . . . making all the cabinets and doing all the electrical work. Throughout his life, he was very active in the community, serving on the Cotton Referendum, Fashing/Peggy Water Supply, Fashing/Peggy Civic Center, County ASC Committee, and Farm Bureau. He was on the Luther Church Council, serving as secretary, and he was an adult Sunday school teacher for the Fashing Luther Church. Opa worked hard, but always made time for his family. He was very active with his boys who were involved in the 4-H club, playing baseball, and showing animals in 4-H. He was a firm believer in keeping the Lord’s Day holy. Sunday was a time for church and was a day of rest. That is when the family would spend Sunday afternoons fishing and hunting rocks. He loved to play board games or dominoes with his family, In 1984, he started to sell insurance: RVOS (home insurance) and SPJST (life insurance). In 2002, he retired from selling insurance, but he continued to farm. In

17

1991, he turned over the farm to Clara Bell. In 2006, they joined the Methodist church in Fashing. The members of the church were so welcoming and have really been a help to Oma when Opa’s health declined. He was so active and really kept his wit about him until he broke his hip about three years ago. It definitely took a toll on him. He relied on a walker to get around and as time grew on, his legs became weaker and weaker. He was so frustrated because it really limited him in the things he wanted to do. About six months ago, his legs became so weak and sore that he had to start using a wheelchair. We know he is in heaven catching up with those he was missing and preceded in death by parents Rudolph and Elizabeth Ahrens; brothers Raymond, Harold, Leland, and Elo; mother and father-inlaw Elmer and Isabella Heinsohn; brothers-in-law Roland Heinsohn and Elroy Krebs; and sisters-in-law Gussie, Cora, and Carolyn Ahrens. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Clara Bell Ahrens; sons Calvin, Darwin, and Randall; daughters-in-law Leslie (Constanzer) Ahrens and Ellen (Pruski) Ahrens; granddaughter Dayna Mendez; grandsons Benjamin, Philip, and Cameron Ahrens; great-grandchildren Jude Mendez and Loralai Ahrens; brother-in-law Shorty (wife of Susan of San Antonio); sisters-in-law Claudia Wetzel of Kerrville, Lorene Krebs of San Antonio, and Joella Heinsohn of China Grove, and numerous nieces and nephews. While it is hard to say goodbye, we don’t need to cry because it’s over, but we need to smile because it happened! We love him and are so glad he touched our lives. He will never be forgotten. I would like to leave you with two quotes that we need to all live by that totally emulate my grandfather’s life: “Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain!” and “The steeper the mountain, the harder the climb, the better the view from the finishing line.” We will miss him. —Cameron —SPJST—

Before President Hunter Bartek called the meeting to order, we ate hot dogs, finger foods, and dessert for our Christmas party. After the meeting, we did our gift exchange. Colton Regan led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and we recited the SPJST Youth Club Motto and remained standing for a moment of silence. Old business included the member-

ship drive that we had on November 5. We collected new clothes for McLane’s Scott and White Children’s Hospital and canned goods for Churches Touching Lives for Christ (CTLC). We will be delivering these items on Saturday, December 17 at 11 a.m. Next was the Temple Christmas Parade. It was scheduled for Monday, December 5, then rescheduled to Tuesday, December 6 due to rain. Many of our youth members rode on the floats and in the Corvettes. Melanie and David, the floats were so beautiful. Great job! Then everyone went to the SPJST Home Office for cookies, kolaches, and drinks. The children were able to visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus. The music sounded great, and everyone had a wonderful time. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to put on this great event. Next was the Rogers Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 10. We met

at the high school parking lot, and the parade was at 10 a.m. Afterwards, we all walked to the Civic Center and the District Two Beseda Dancers performed. The kids enjoyed hot dogs and cookies, and Santa came in visit. Last of all, on Sunday, December 11 was the annual Star Hall Christmas party, beginning at 3 p.m. We had our annual memorial service for our deceased members for 2016. The youth club performed an ABC skit with the help of Lynette (we appreciate your help, Lynette). The kids sang a few songs, and Santa came to visit the children. Presents were handed out, and everyone got a goody bag. Everyone then enjoyed visiting and beverage during social hour. We then had a fabulous meal. Thanks to everyone who brought turkeys for the dinner and all the side dishes and desserts. New business included we will go Christmas caroling starting at the Weston Inn at 6 p.m. on December 20. Watch for an email from Amber. The last event of the year will be the

New Year’s Eve dance. Doors open at 6 p.m. The youth club will be selling hamburgers and fries. Then black-eyed peas and cornbread will be served at midnight. Come out for a good time. Music will be provided by Jerry Haisler and the Melody 5. We still need more volunteers to work in the kitchen that night. Please let us know if you can help us. There are two shifts. Birthdays for December are Brayden Gilliam, Mason Roantes, R.J. Dolgener, and Chelsea Bilbrey. I would like to thank everyone who was in charge of surprising me with gifts. I received an RTIC tumbler. It will be used a lot. I love that it has the SPJST emblem and my name on it. I will enjoy the gift cards and cash. Thanks again for letting me be your youth leader. I will miss you all . . . It has been a great adventure, and it kept me busy, very busy. Now it’s time to do some traveling and spend more time with my family. Thanks to my assistants - Amber, Sharla, and Chelsea. I appreciate all your help.

Thanks, Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Leader Joyce Kraatz!

Dear Vestnik Readers, I played Texas youth football for the Los Centex Desperados of Temple on the rookie team. My team made it to the second round of the playoffs and lost to the Killeen Cove Chiefs. I had fun playing football this season. On Sunday, December 18, my family and I drove to Frisco, Texas, to the Ford Center at The Star, which is the Dallas Cowboys indoor training athletic facility. During halftime of one of the champion playoff games, I received the “All TYFA” Scholastic Achievement Award for having a 98.5 percent GPA. The award included a certificate, a congratulatory letter, and a tee-shirt. I am so thankful to receive this honor. Kal-El Martinez, age 8 —SPJST—
