Delivering Christmas Joy and Happiness
Popping the Question The year ended at a couple of SPJST halls around the state with great beginnings. Door prizes were awarded throughout the New Year’s Eve dance at Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. Lodge 47 President Edwin Pechal announced that one of the door prizes was one-of-akind. “As far as I know, a prize like this has never been given away at Star Hall,” he said. Clifton Goonan then approached the stage to present the prize, but he was to choose who the lucky winner would be. “It was, of course, a beautiful lady named Samantha Cox, and the prize was the gift for a lifetime—as Clifton got down on his knee and presented Samantha with an engagement ring asking her to be his
wife,” Lodge 47 Secretary Patsy Koslovsky reported. “Samantha wholeheartedly accepted his gift with a big ‘yes!’” Lodge 191, Lufkin Reporter Pat Scogin shared a similar story. “One of the young ladies, Bethany Hickman, who was at the New Year’s Eve dance at Lodge 191 was pleasantly surprised,” Pat said. “Bethany’s boyfriend Nathaniel Frisinger proposed to her in front of the whole crowd during the band’s break. I think she was totally surprised, and, of course, she said ‘yes.’ What a great way to start a new stage of their lives!” Congratulations to these couples! —SPJST—

here once was a very wealthy and curious king. This king had a huge boulder placed in the middle of a road. Then he hid nearby to see if anyone would try to remove the gigantic rock from the road. The first people to pass by were some of the king’s wealthiest merchants and courtiers. Rather than moving it, they simply walked around it. A few loudly blamed the King for not maintaining the roads. Not one of them tried to move the boulder. Finally, a peasant came along. His arms were full of vegetables. When he got near the boulder, rather than simply walking around it as the others had, the peasant put down his load and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. It took a lot of effort but he finally succeeded. The peasant gathered up his load and was ready to go on his way when he saw a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The peasant opened the purse. The purse was stuffed full of gold coins and a note from the king. The king’s note said the purse’s gold was a reward for moving the boulder from the road. The king showed the peasant what many of us never understand: every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition. —Author Unknown VESTNIK

SPJST Calendar: main source of day-to-day activities
I absolutely love my SPJST Calendars. It is my main source of day-to-day activities. I carry it with me everywhere—on day trips, to doctors appointments, on vacations, family and friends’ visits. It becomes my daily journal since I write details of the day on the calendar. And, I truly enjoy the recipes along with all the important information in it. I am saving them for my grandchildren as part of their Czech heritage and the notes that we, their grandparents, record on them. I agree with Mr. Vernon Ball about the SPJST Calendars. Mr. Ball presented some really good ideas. Please, try to come up with a solution to keep this tradition . . . maybe even have members actually request them so that no calendar is sent to someone who does not want one. Thank you for anything y’all can do. Sincerely, Margie Malota Stockman Lodge 201, Bleiblerville-Nelsonville —SPJST—
Member looks forward to SPJST calendar each year
I see the officers and directors want to eliminate the SPJST calendar in order to cut expenses. I hope that this does not happen as we look forward each year to the calendar listing events from lodges from around the state. They have already cut a big event in January which members look forward to each year. Chester Jenke Lodge 258, Seguin —SPJST—
Member: Still enough of us who enjoy, rely on paper calendar
I just read an article regarding “Save the Calendar” but must have missed the announcement of it being discontinued. Yes, in today’s electronic world, the up and coming generations may not even have a paper calendar; however, there - in my opinion - are still enough of us older folks who do really enjoy and rely on a paper calendar. SPJST’s has always been a quality calendar that is enjoyed by many. I would be willing to purchase it if that is an option. Thank you for consideration. Donald Polasek Lodge 88, Houston —SPJST—

The meeting was called to order at 7:15 p.m. President Daniel Wilde led the Pledge of Allegiance and held a silent prayer for the military and our deceased members. There was no reading of minutes as our last meeting was at the Christmas party, and no one much cared about the minutes for November. We had two transfers - Rose and
Justin Everett. We are glad for their presence. Correspondence was from Ronald McDonald House for the donation by Director Pospisil and for the money from our lodge. We also received a thank you for our donation to David Trojacek’s cause. Bar and FAC reports were given by Brenda Maddux. The State Progressive 42 Domino Tournament will be Saturday, January 14 at the Home Office; State Tarok Tournament is Saturday, February 4; and State 42 Domino Tournament is Saturday, March 4; and Valentine greeting deadline for the Věstník is Monday, January 30. Lodge 47, Seaton welcomes visitors to January meeting
Dear Vestnik Readers, On the beautiful and slightly cold day of January 8, 2017, Lodge 47, Seaton President Edwin Pechal called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. Thirty-two members, one youth, and visitors James Lee, III and Susan Chandler attended the meeting. James Lee representing the SPJST Foundation spoke of the need to support the Czech Heritage Museum and SPJST Education and Nature Center. Susan Chandler shared the delight that the Museum brings to all who visit. She stated some of the artifacts date back to the 1500s. She shared a couple of interesting stories that visitors have shared with her. One of the biggest goals of the museum is to secure these fabulous collections. There is a very real need for fireproof and waterproof vaults. If anyone knows a vault that could be donated, please contact Susan at the Museum or SPJST Home Office. We thank Mr. Lee and Ms. Chandler for visiting with us and sharing their knowledge on the ENC and Museum, and for the great job they are doing for SPJST. Youth members Dannikka Bartek and Kyndall Carroll presented the flags and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. Members stood for a moment of silence for departed members Leroy Dana and Apolonia Benavides. May God bless their families. As in my last
letter, our lodge has lost a wonderful man, Leroy Dana. He was very active in our lodge. Leroy, you are much missed and will always be remembered. It was good to see Nelda Marek. We were happy to see you healthy and back in the thick of things. We were also very glad to hear from Michelle Porubsky. Her dad, Joe C. Bartek, is now out of the hospital after a lengthy stay. We wish him the best for a healthy recovery. Roll call of officers, board members, and active sales agents showed all present except active sales agent David Pechal. The December lodge minutes were accepted as read by Secretary Patsy Koslovsky. She also read the unofficial December board minutes. A longtime visitor and a gentleman who has helped our lodge for years with cooking, serving, attending the majority of meetings, and so much more was recognized for his kindness. Mr. Tom Williams, a longtime visitor, was presented with a plaque for his services and was adopted by

Lodge 47, Seaton as a social member. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all of your help and welcome you to our lodge. I would like to thank SPJST Chief Financial Officer Leonard Mikeska and his wife Dorothy for attending our lodge Christmas party on December 11. My utmost apology to you for leaving your names out of the Vestnik article published last week regarding our Christmas party. We were honored with your attendance. President Pechal thanked all who helped in any way with the Christmas party. Everyone seemed to have a really good time at the party. A special thank you to all members who attended. President Pechal thanked Vice President Brandon Bartek and others who helped put away the Christmas decorations prior to the meeting. He also thanked the many workers who helped with the New Year’s Eve dance. Door prizes were given throughout the night. He stated
7
that the number 3 door prize was a prize that was one-of-a-kind. As far as he knew, a prize like this had never been given away at Star Hall. A gentleman came to the stage to present the gift, but chose who would be the lucky winner. It was, of course, a beautiful lady and the gift was a gift for a lifetime—as he got down on his knees and presented her with an engagement ring and asked her to be his wife. She wholeheartedly accepted his gift with a big “Yes!”. Congratulations to this wonderful couple!
Save these Dates! Vice President Brandon Bartek reminded everyone of the fundraiser for the Texas Polka Music Museum which will be held on Sunday, March 5 at Star Hall from 1 to 6 p.m. Admission is $10 per person. Please watch the Vestnik for more details. He also stated he has already begun working on the September Extravaganza. If anyone, whether a business or individual, would like to be a sponsor in advertising, please contact Brandon. The date for the Extravaganza is Saturday, September 16. Newly elected Fraternal Activities Coordinator E. J. Pechal gave dates for upcoming state activities—State Progressive 42 Tournament on January 14, State Tarok Tournament on February 4, and the State Straight Domino Tournament on March 4 all to be held at the Home Office in Temple. He also reminded everyone the 100 Pennies Drive is now on for donations to be made for the scholarship fund. Application deadline for the SPJST Scholarship is February 1. Secretary Patsy Koslovsky handed a copy of the 2017-2020 Lodge 47 Rules and Regulations to each family. Patsy also stated she would not be attending the February 5 lodge meeting as she was honored and blessed as an SPJST sales agent to have earned a Caribbean Cruise.

SPJST Lodge 81, Rozkvět Růže O Needville, Texas
SPJST - Slovanská Podporující Jednota Státu Texas (Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas) Lodge 81, Needville was organized 25 July 1909 as a fraternal life insurance society for the early Czech immigrants to the Fort Bend County area. First officers were Frank Matula, president and Leo Peters, secretary. The lodge was originally organized and chartered in Vogelsang Hall in Rosenberg. Meetings were held there and Nesvadba Hall in Rosenberg. In 1912, a committee was elected to locate a tract of land in Needville for a lodge. That same year, the lodge seal was changed from Rosenberg to Needville. Two acres of land were purchased from Dr. Cloud at this present location on Highway 36. The first hall was constructed in 1912 and dedicated in 1913. In 1955, members voted to enlarge and remodel the building. Due to an increase in membership, it was voted to build this current hall in 1974. The old hall was sold and moved off site. Funds were raised by having chili dinners, socials, quilt sales, and operating a booth at Fort Bend Czech Fest. Charlie Matcek was president when this building was dedicated in 1974. Several sister lodges have merged with Lodge 81, Needville — Lodge 70, Láskavost - Guy; Lodge 96, Krásná; Lodge 97, Strom Slovanů - Orchard; Lodge 108, Jíří Poděbradský - Rosenberg; Lodge 111, Jaroslav Vrchlícky - Sugar Land; Lodge 112, F.B. Lodge 180, Burleson holds first 2017 meeting
We hope that each of you had a happy New Year’s celebration and ate your fair share of black-eyed peas for good luck throughout the 2017 year ahead of us. We had our first 2017 Lodge 180, Burleson meeting at the Burleson Police Facility on Tuesday, January 3, 2017, and we all blew in with the cold frigid wind. I absolutely love Texas weather because if you are not pleased with the present situation, you can wait a short while and it will change - maybe to your liking or maybe not. But just be aware, it can change very quickly. The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance led by junior member Logan Altamonte. We are so proud to have Logan lead us at each meeting and be a part of our opening ceremonies. Following the pledge, a moment of silent prayer was given for all. Prayers were offered on behalf of ill members, all of our military as well as all others that help to protect us. Due to the weather, all who were present decided for a condensed meeting so that we could adjourn and journey to our designated dining spot for the evening and return home in a timely manner. This was greatly appreciated as some of our members were trying to recover from illnesses prior to our meeting date and were not feeling to perky. I know that I was about to freeze and wondered about the others.

The food was delicious. Thanks to all who brought food for the food table. The 50-50 drawing was won by Vanessa Childers, and the free dance tickets (to any dance but New Year’s Eve) were won by Jeanne Fullerton and Spider Williams. Thanks to all who bought cards for the drawing. There was a nice surprise to one of the young ladies that was at the New Year’s Eve dance by the name of Bethany Hickman. Her boyfriend Nathaniel Frisinger purposed to her in front of the whole crowd during the band’s break. I think she was totally surprised, and, of course, she said “yes.” What a great way to start a new stage of their lives. Congratulations to both of you! This is total merit points for the 20162017 youth year thusfar. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior
Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Youth Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Youth Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Youth Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest. Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Youth
Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.
Merit Point Awards First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. Packing the Polka Punch
By Justin Everett • Lodge 24, Cyclone
On Saturday, December 31, 2016, The All Around Czechs polka band played a dance at S.S. Cyril and Methodius Hall in Granger, Texas. Even though they have only been playing since 2014, don’t let that fool you. The All Around Czechs still pack the polka punch and have many polka fans attend their dances. The boys kicked off the New Year’s Eve bash with “Bandleader Polka.” The guys also got the polka lovers moving and grooving with the “Champagne Polka” which was a very good tune to ring in the new year with. Since the
boys are all Texans, it was only fitting that they played a few country tunes like “I Fall to Pieces” and “Different Kind of Flower.” There was delicious food to keep your stomach from growling such as hot and juicy hamburgers, black-eyed peas, cornbread, and ice cold refreshments . . . all of the major Texas food groups! The guys played a great show and will continue to do so at their next dance. Be sure to pick up their new CD “Where It Began.” Happy 2017, everyone! —SPJST—

Pořádek Thoughts for Today
Zvykni si ukládati své věci na jisté místo, abys, když jich potrebuješ, snadno je mohl nalézti. Tím uspořís sobě a jiným mnohé mrzutosti, uchráníš se mnohé škody, přijdeš všude v pravý čas a vyhneš se mnohe výčitce, ano i trestu ze strany rodičů a učitelů svých. Zanechej všech marných hádek. Dbej jen vždycky o pořádek. —SPJST—
A New Ship for the Czech Heritage Museum
Dr. and Mrs. Robert Brakemeier donated this fantastic model of the SS Kronprinzessin Cecille to the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple recently. The Cecille, later named the USAT Mount Vernon, helped bring members of the famous Czech Legion home. Prior to 1924, Czech immigrants traveled in ships such as this one, and perhaps on the Cecille. Dr. Brakemeier, a retired physician who came to Temple in the 1970s, grew up in Albany, New York. SS Kronprinzessin Cecille was an ocean liner built in Stettin, Germany, in 1906 for North German Lloyd that had the largest steam reciprocating machinery ever fitted to a ship. The last of four ships of the Kaiser class, she was also
