SUPER CEREAL FOOD DRIVE
Everybody has a life story to tell,
and some of us had experiences in our life that are different. This is my story about how I arrived to Texas. All this I recalled when on June 20, 2016, my son Jon and I left for a visit to the city of Bowmanville, which is close to Toronto in Canada. The purpose of this trip was to meet a friend that I have not seen since 1980 when I came to this country as an immigrant. Let me start from the beginning . . .

It was still in the deep time of the communist regime in Europe. Jan asked me to leave Czechoslova-

His service was Tuesday, February 7 at Wall Brethren Church in Wall, Texas. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sister Sharon and her family.

Minutes of the January 17 and 18, 2017 Regular Meeting of SPJST Supreme Lodge held at the Home Office, Temple, Texas § § § § § § §
§ § § § § § §
PRESIDING The meeting was called to order by Supreme Lodge Chairman Donnie Victorick on January 17, 2017, at 8 a.m.
ATTENDING Supreme Lodge—Brian Vanicek, President; Hiram Dixon, Vice President; Leonard Mikeska, Chief Financial Officer; Roy Vajdak, Director of Accounting/Information Technology Services; Donnie Victorick - District One/Chairman; Jesse Pospisil - District Two; John Engelke - District Three; Billy Rollwitz - District Four; Bradley Stavinoha - District Five; Karen Kaspar - District Six/Vice Chairman; Robert J. Bayer - District Seven. Other— Janie Coakley, Recording Secretary.
OPENING OF MEETING The meeting was opened by Supreme Lodge Chairman Victorick with a welcome and recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed in respect to our departed members and in honor of our armed forces. Chief Financial Officer Mikeska led the Supreme Lodge in an opening prayer.
ANNOUNCEMENTS President Vanicek announced that Consultant Buddie Ballard of Alpha Capital Management will present a report on investment performance on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF OCTOBER 18 AND 19, 2016 REGULAR MEETING The minutes were considered page by page. The minutes were approved as presented on motion by Director Kaspar, seconded by Director Pospisil, and carried unanimously.
EXECUTIVE MINUTES The meeting went into executive session from 8:15 until 8:30 a.m. to consider executive minutes. OLD BUSINESS
AUDIT REPORT Director Kaspar reported that the audit committee met with JRBT and met the new auditor assigned to SPJST. Her name is Diana Ward, and she brings with her 27 years of experience. President Vanicek, Director Victorick, and Director of Accounting/Information Technology Services Vajdak joined the meeting as well as the internal audit of our books. There was discussion that we need to add the process of a penetration test on hack awareness of our IP systems to detect the possibility of a privacy breach.
Director Kaspar presented the report of the audit conducted the previous day. She reported that the committee reviewed the budget very intensely and thorough. The audit proved in several areas the income was high. She credited that the positive results were accomplished through the diligence of the Supreme Lodge learning from historic events, and working together was leading the Society towards a surplus of $20 million. Director Victorick noted that there were seven expense categories that were under the budgeted amount allowed. He also noted that our death claims (out of our control) were over the budget as well as contractual obligations suggesting to revisit and negotiate certain items. Director Pospisil noted that due to detailed reports, the committee is able to spend more time on the numbers of the budget rather than researching mileage books. Director Kaspar

and Director Engelke agreed that the presentation of reports along with receipts proofed against the chart of accounts provides clear detail. President Vanicek agreed that Director of Accounting/Information Technology Services Vajdak has done a good job with the assignment of expense/income to the correct chart of accounts.
Director Kaspar thanked the committee members for their dedicated work on the audit. She also thanked the officers and directors for continuing to work together on issues as a whole. She stated although we will disagree at times, unity is the key to success. Recess was taken from 9:05 until 9:20 a.m. MANAGEMENT TEAM MEETING NOTES Opportunity was given to review the weekly management team meeting notes.
Director Bayer had submitted a list of questions and discussion points for consideration by the Supreme Lodge. The items and questions he presented were thoroughly discussed. Statement of Policy Concerning Conflict of Interest STATE OF TEXAS
COUNTY OF BELL
Wednesday, February 15, 2017
9
BE IT REMEMBERED that at a regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the SPJST, held at its regular place of meeting at Temple, Texas, on the 18th day of January, 2017, at which meeting a quorum was present and voting, the following Resolution was adopted:
RESOLVED: That the SPJST, a Fraternal Life Insurance Society (1) believes that the insurance business is affected with a public interest and is dependent upon public confidence, and (2) expects employees, officers and directors to conduct their personal financial interests and affairs so as to avoid placing such interests in conflict, direct or indirect, with those of the Company and to avoid conduct which might impair their judgment with respect to the business of the Society. The following are regarded as illustrative of the principal situations where such conflict may be involved:
1. Financial Interest Employees, officers, directors, or members of their families having a material interest in any corporation or incorporated enterprise which sells goods or services to, buys from, competes with the Society in the sale of insurance, or borrows from the Company and who are in a position to influence any decision by the Society with respect to such transactions. 2. Inside Information Employees, officers, or directors directly or indirectly using or divulging inside confidential information with respect to the Society for the purpose of securing personal profit or advantage for themselves or others or in a manner prejudicial to the interest of the Society.
3. Gratuities and Entertainment The receipts of loans, gifts, gratuities, entertainment, and favors of more than nominal value by employees, officers, directors, or members of their families, either directly or indirectly, that may influence any decision with respect to the Society.
While the above are illustrative of ways in which conflict may arise, the entire subject is so far-reaching and the interrelationships possible within the insurance business so complex that the avoidance of conflict rest basically upon each individual’s ethical standards, integrity and judgment. Annually, on or about the time of the January Board meeting, a request will be made of all directors, officers and responsible employees to state in writing any activities which conflict with the policy. The statement will be as stated on the attached Exhibit “A”. However, if any officer, director, or responsible employee at any time believes he may be engaged in activities described, he should immediately report such activities to the President.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That the President, Brian Vanicek, and the Chief Financial Officer, Leonard Mikeska, of SPJST, be and they are hereby directed to execute in the name of and on behalf of SPJST, the Statement of Policy concerning Conflict of Interest. ____________________________________ Brian Vanicek, President

DIRECTOR KASPAR Director Kaspar congratulated Doris Tyroch on her 50 years of service to SPJST.
Director Kaspar stated as chairperson of the Audit Committee, she would like to thank Directors Pospisil, Engelke, and Victorick for a very detailed look at the financial aspects of our organization. She stated it was a good preamble to the board meeting. She then commented that the Supreme Lodge meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday has been very thorough and diligent in our duties. She thanked the officers and fellow directors for continuing the vision to lead our Society into 2017.
Director Kaspar shared that we are all on the same team and to stay frugal with our budget and financial areas and remain successful for the SPJST membership and our Society.
Director Kaspar expressed safe travels to all on their way home.
DIRECTOR BAYER Director Bayer congratulated Doris Tyroch on her 50-year longevity milestone of service to SPJST.
Director Bayer stated he was looking forward to working with Vice President Dixon.
Director Bayer said he thought this had been a very good meeting.
DIRECTOR VICTORICK Director Victorick thanked all of the directors and officers for making this a very informative meeting with multiple exchanges of ideas. We have experienced some hills and valleys during the last two days. In the end, we are still a great team with a common vision of growing SPJST. We all have different ideas and expectations, but in the end we are still united.
Director Victorick stated that we must take future actions to preserve what we have by getting our membership involved in what we are trying to do. We must reach out to long standing and loyal members who have an affinity for SPJST. We must make them sales agents and encourage them to get involved with our local lodges. We must take a new approach to giving them guidance and increase our presence statewide. We have to continue working with our existing agents and set goals and expectations for their performance during the upcoming year. We have many challenges facing us with the greatest one being a decreasing membership primarily due to death claims and certificate surrenders. To offset this, we must increase our sales through higher expectations of our sales force.
Director Victorick said we are blessed to continue to be financially strong, but the current trend that we are facing has to be changed. Through hard work and being vision-oriented, we can make a difference. I challenge all of us to continue to look to the future and bring initiatives to the board for us to discuss and implement. Thank you for all your input, and let us continue to work together.

Polka Dancing A Czech Tradition
When I was a little girl, my family would always work hard during the week. But the best part of the week was looking forward to the weekends when we would go dancing and usually meet all of our friends and family at the dance. Mom would always take a quilt and pillow just in case my sister or I got sleepy and needed to lay down and take a snooze during intermission. Of course, being the daughter of Anton and Albina Vrazel of the Vrazels’ Polka Band, there were lots of dances. As I grew up, we girls would dance together or with our aunts and maybe one or two with my uncles. When I became a teen, I could not wait for the next dance to sit and hope my favorite boy would ask me to dance. Then we girls could giggle and talk about the night and who all we danced with. But it always was a family affair. No family member was left at home or left out of the dancing fun. The dances used to be from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., and sometimes the road home was long and we kids would fall asleep. But the next morning at church, we were spry or at least tried to look like we were awake. When I started to date, we would all sit in a group of young people, across the hall from our parents, of course. But we still were there as a family, and so the tradition went on from generation to generation. Most of the dance halls were SPJST halls hosting the top polka and country bands across the state. Everyone was always so friendly
13
at these dances, and no one had to worry about getting robbed or hurt by anyone else. We were like one big family. Another tradition was to attend church picnics in the area and make a full day of fun and music. I was recently cleaning out some files and found an old poster advertising my church’s picnic (St. Joseph in Cyclone) to be held at Lodge 24, Cyclone Flag Hall. The year was 1958, which meant that I was only three years old. I don’t remember it, but I do remember other picnics at the old Flag Hall. I also found a lot of tapes of wedding dances (audio only, there were no videos in the 1950s and 1960s). How loud and cheerful the audience sounded when the grand march was going on then the bride and groom were announced to the crowd. Sometimes, I wonder when and where that tradition changed. The dances seem to be getting fewer and farther between, and you just don’t see families going to dances together from the baby to the oldest teen. I did want to share a picture of this poster and my memories of the dances at the local SPJST halls with you. Please take time to take your family to a polka dance at one of the SPJST halls near you, and keep the tradition of polka dancing going. Lodge 191, Lufkin Presents January Dance Ticket Winners
Service Dogs By d.knape
We used to call them seeing-eye dogs and as a kid we marveled at how they guided blind men who walked with white canes tap tapping the curb back then the dogs were almost always German Shepherds smart and patient guiding their masters with precision through traffic and crowds the dogs never growled or barked but stayed focused on their duties people got out of their way showing respect for the blind and for the faithful dog now it is common to see “Service Dogs” you see them everywhere in grocery stores, airports, malls these dogs have lost the designation of being only for the blind and now “serve” all who need a loving companion an ear for kindness

August 14, 1914 102 Years Old
February 14, 2016 101 Years Old
March 7, 1916 100 Years Old
Carmen Kahn, the eldest resident, never imagined that she would be living in Taylor. Carmen was born in 1913 in Madrid, Spain, where her father worked as an attorney for the government; her mother was a proud homemaker and mother of five. At the age of 12, Carmen’s father suddenly passed away, and Carmen’s mother did her best to raise the children. When Carmen was a young teen, a Civil War broke out and all four of her siblings perished. Carmen’s mother took her to Paris and started a new life. Carmen began taking classes in fashion design. She learned French fluently. Early in World War II, German troops marched into Paris. Carmen and her mother left for Spain immediately. Carmen took a job working for the American wife of an Englishman and president of an American company in England with business dealings throughout Europe. Carmen was able to travel the world as a personal assistant and translator. On a trip to New York, she met a former World War II Veteran who convinced her to marry rather than return to Europe. After several years of marriage, they had one child. Carmen enjoyed playing tennis and riding horseback. She was interested in art, culture, traveling, and learning on her own.
Mrs. Eusebia Vargas was born in Milam County, Texas, around the San Gabriel area to her parents, who were both born in Mexico. Eusebia is the third eldest of two brothers and four sisters. Eusebia was raised in Thrall by her father and her older sister; her mother passed away when Eusebia was two years old. Later, Eusebia met her husband Ysidro Vargas and married him in 1931. They had three daughters and two sons. Eusebia loved to bake. She sewed clothes for all her children, and she absolutely loved bingo! Eusebia worked cleaning houses and taking care of others’ children. In her younger years, Eusebia and her husband of 66 years loved to dance. They both retired from the University of Texas after more than 15 years of employment. She lost Ysidro - the love of her life - in 1997 and lived alone for several years until she moved to S.P.J.S.T. Nursing and Rehab in 2013.
After her father moved from Denmark to Texas, he married Hannah’s mother and became a big farmer, living in Frame Switch, outside of Hutto. Hannah was born and raised on the farm, growing up with her sister and brother. At the age of 18, Hannah married G.I. Hays in 1934; they raised three children. Hannah was a housewife while her husband owned a business. Hannah made all of her children’s clothes, and she loved to cook. She baked things for all of her kids’ various clubs. Her husband always told her, “You have to make the crust because you have to make the best so that people would know you made them.” Hannah has been a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Taylor for many years. She and her husband had their 54th year anniversary before G.I. passed away at the age of 88. Hannah shared, “G.I. cleaned house and was a good house cleaner.” Hannah loves to play dominoes. She used to travel around the area playing with other senior groups. Hannah has 12 grandsons and two granddaughters. She also shared that her sister’s granddaughter named her baby girl Hannah Rose.
Josephine Zrubek was born in Granger to Joe Vitek and Annie Volcik. She was the eldest of one sister and two brothers; and a stepsister and a stepbrother. She attended Macedonia in her school years around Granger. At the age of 20, Josephine married Rudolph on May 5, 1936, and enjoyed raising a daughter and two sons. Josephine and her husband were farmers in Granger and later in their sixties, she enjoyed cooking at a barbecue place in Granger. Josephine and Rudolph enjoyed dancing when they weren’t picking cotton. Josephine loved to sing in the church choir at Granger Brethren. She also had to make homemade bread for Rudolph at least once a week. Josephine loved to can, cook, and, of course, go fishing!

Mary Adele was born in 1916, the fifth and youngest daughter of Charles and Mollie Aderholt, members of Williamson County pioneering families. Despite the 17-year span of oldest to youngest, Mary Adele remained close to her sisters throughout their lives, sharing in the care of their 105-year-old mother. Mary Adele was closer in age to her older nieces and nephews who all grew up nearby as a family unit. Mary Adele attended Taylor public schools, and she has resided in Taylor all her life. As a charter member of Taylor Junior Woman’s Study Club, Mary Adele was involved in establishing the Well Child’s Clinic, a speech and physical therapy facility for children. The Clinic operated on funds raised by the Club’s style show and annual Easter Seals drive for many years. On August 20, 1939, Mary Adele was married to Don Smith. They reared four children in the First Christian Church, and each attended Taylor schools. A homemaker of the first order, Mary Adele provided a loving atmosphere where each child was nurtured, disciplined, indulged, and encouraged, and did we mention disciplined?

I purchased a two weeks vacation ticket to Croatia (in former Yugoslavia) traveling by bus from the travel agency. I gave most of my things from my small apartment to my family members. I packed some necessary things into two
Mr. Horace Twitty was born in Allsboro, Alabama. He moved to West, Texas, and took his first job right out of high school with Sinclair, which delivered oil. He got tired of this job after only a year and went to work in the finger printing department with the FBI for one year until he was drafted by the United States Army at the age of 19. Before going overseas, he married his sweetheart, Mildred. The couple was blessed with two sons. He remained in the Army for three years; two of those years during World War II were spent in India. After returning to his family, Horace worked for Sinclair once again. He changed jobs, moved his family to Taylor, and worked for Cantrell Oliver Company. Horace eventually bought and operated the company for 30 years until retirement. Horace has lived in Taylor and been a member of First Baptist Church for 70 years. Horace stated, “I would hate to live my life completely over again, but telling you the truth, the Lord helped me many, many times and is still helping me each and every day.”
bags. My family met the weekend before at our summer place to say goodbye, and it was difficult. I did not know when I would be able to see them again. I stayed in the vacation place, and after a week, I asked for my passport that was kept safe in the motel by the men in charge of our group. Thus, I began my journey. I am not a person with a lot of courage for adventure. I knew that I would need God’s protection, and I asked God to go before me and with me. I traveled to the capital city of Beograd to find the Austrian embassy in order to apply for a visa for three days to
Alene was born in a little Texas community called Salty. Alene turned 100 just a few days ago! Alene was the eldest of five sisters who were raised by their parents, who were farmers. In 1936, at the age of 19, Alene married the love of her life, Carl Paris. The couple had one son, Charles Paris, who passed away a couple of years ago. Alene worked at HEB and other places to help provide for the family before Carl took a job at Alcoa in Rockdale. Alene loved to cook, and her family misses her homecooked meals. Alene loved going to her church and being with the those whom she loved dearly. She still attends with friends from time to time. Although Alene resides in assisted living, she needs no assistance!
travel to Vienna. It took four hours, and I went back to the train station to get a train ticket to Vienna, Austria. I left at 7 o’clock in the evening, and I arrived in Vienna around eight o’clock in the morning. In the Vienna train station, I had to ask for directions to a main police station. When I came there, I applied for asylum. Because I did not have anybody to stay with, I was taken to a refugee camp in Traiskirchen which was about an hour’s car drive. They took my fingerprints and checked our criminal background. They also checked whether or not I had any association with a commu-
nist party. Americans did not accept any communist refugees. I had to pick a sponsor to get a visa to the USA. My sponsor was an American fund for Czech refugees. They were a very nice people. I stayed in a refugee camp for a few weeks, and I lived in a small room with bunk beds with ladies from Hungary and Romania. In the evenings, it was not safe to be outside our buildings. Men from different countries got into fights with knives. Bathroom facilities were not divided for male and female. A retired lady professor was coming to our camp to give free English lessons. After a few weeks, a young lady from Poland was looking for some lady to go to another place. I did not know where it was, but I said I will go. In a few days, I was on the way to a place in the suburbs of Vienna called Hornwald. It was a small refugee camp for a few families with children and single females. I stayed in a large room where 16 ladies lived; they were mostly from Poland. This was the time when I met my friend Dana who was from Brno, and she waited for visum to Canada. She is two years younger, and she had a part-time job in a restaurant. We became friends and spent some time together. It made the stay there for both of us much easier. We made a division in the corner of the room with a blanket for us to have some privacy. This house was in a park with lot of trees and people from Vienna came there for a walk with children or dogs. Food was better, and the man in charge of this place was British; he was not too kind. In November, it turned cold, we got some warmer clothings from US Army surplus - warm jacket, hat, shoes, gloves, and corduroy pants. The room had a large window from ceiling to floor, and it was cold there when winter came. I had to dry my shoes every time I went outside. I did not have a job. There were a few families with children, and I played with them doing simple crafts, drawings, and reading books. It helped me to pass the time. In December 1980, I had my papers ready. After three months and one week, I said goodbye to my friends, and I started my journey to America. After changing my plane in London, I arrived in Texas. It was December 21, 1980, when my plane landed in Dallas International Airport, and I met with Jan and his parents. I had to learn how to live in this country, learn the language, and the weather was different. I had bad allergies to deal with for several years. We got married in March 1981, and we started a family and raised children. I worked different jobs through the years and retired four years ago as a teacher’s aide. —SPJST—

SPJST Juniors, Seniors Invited to apply for 2017 LEAD Team A new summer youth leadership program is set to get underway this year in SPJST. The LEAD program (Leaders in Education and Development) will offer 15- and 16-year-olds with the opportunity to develop their communication and leadership skills while they play a supporting role throughout the month-long SPJST summer camp program at SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) in Fayette County. The LEAD is being offered in addition to SPJST’s longstanding LIT (Leaders-in-Training) program. “The LEAD program is designed to facilitate the transition from camper to camp staff,” says State Youth Director Lynette Talasek, who will be working with SPJST Camp Administrator Jeb Lapayrolerie to administer the program. “The objective is to see our LEAD team members develop into future paid camp counselors and help guide the next generation of SPJST summer campers.” For 2017, all interested LEAD program candidates will be asked to complete an application. The application process will be followed by an online Skype interview. A total of 10 youth will be accepted into the program for 2017. Those who are selected will begin their leadership regimen by at-
tending and participating in a weeklong SPJST training session for SPJST summer camp personnel in June. Participants will receive certifications in multiple areas including CPR, lifeguarding, and first aid. They will return to SPJST ENC in July for three SPJST summer camp sessions during which time they will be assigned to groups and will be relied upon for assistance with daily activities. Service represents a key component of SPJST’s LEAD program. “Helping others — no matter how large or small the act — is important,” says Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek. “It can transform lives, communities, and nations. We believe that those young people who complete the LEAD program will develop valuable skills that will continue to serve them throughout the rest of their lives.” There is no cost for participating in the LEAD Program. Applications are available on the SPJST website, through SPJST youth leaders, or from the SPJST Home Office. If you have any questions regarding any aspect of the LEAD program, please contact State Youth Director Lynette Talasek at 254-931-0639. —SPJST—

Expression of Sympathy
We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Hvezda Texasu, No. 47, Seaton, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed member, LEROY SCHILLER. Funeral service for Leroy Adolph Schiller, 70 of Zabcikville, Texas was held at 10 a.m. Friday, January 27, 2017 at Ocker Brethren Church in Zabcikville with Mark Sebek and Richard Cortese officiating. Burial followed in Ocker Cemetery. To conquer death is to live in glory with God and family. In celebration of life, Leroy Schiller Leroy Schiller conquered death on January 24, 2017 and joined his Savior and his family in glory. Leroy was born to Ernest and Leona Schiller in Rosebud on April 8, 1946. As a baby boomer post World War II, like so many others, he hit America running and never stopped running. He lived in Zabcikville on the family farm and graduated from Rogers High School in 1964. He entered Tarleton State University in 1964, and continued there until 1967, when he entered the Texas Department of Public Safety Police Academy, graduating and becoming a Texas State Trooper stationed in Houston. He returned to Bell and Coryell Counties in 1968, and continued as a state trooper for 28 and one-half years before his retirement in 1995. He earned an associate degree from Central Texas College in 1970, and his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in 1972. Leroy went on to earn his Master of Science in Criminology from the University of Central Texas in 1980. Leroy married Karyl B. Schiller in April 1977, at Ocker Brethren Church, where he was a member since childhood, and they had a celebration in the tractor shed at the farm. It rained four inches that day which made the crops reach towards the heavens in celebration. Leroy and Karyl lived in Temple
25
until moving to the farm in 1993. Their children - Carrie, Amy, Kevin, Kent, and Kelly - shared in the maintenance and operations of the farm and livestock until they all grew up with careers of their own. Leroy and Karyl worked their rental property, and Karyl taught in Temple ISD and Killeen ISD for 46 years, in addition to working as a UIL Sports Official for over 40 years. Leroy loved public service, but his real passion was being a dirt farmer. Throughout his life, he farmed with his parents and brother Weldon on their blackland Zabcikville farm. Many days, he would leave early to plant the crops or harvest till 4 p.m., come home, wash off the farm, put on his trooper’s uniform, and work the safety of the highways and roads of Bell County till 1 a.m. then do it all over the next day till it rained or the crops were planted or harvested. For his family, there was no greater satisfaction than to cheer the growing crops or the sustaining rain. When his parents passed away within eight months of each other, Leroy and his family moved to Zabcikville from Temple and continued to farm the land. With their two strong boys and Kelly, the farm work continued. When Leroy and Karyl went to the field, so went the kids, fondly known as the “work for food” crew, and everybody worked till the job was finished! Leroy was a lifetime resident of East Bell County’s Czech community where the traditional music and fellowship abounded. He was proud of his heritage and founded the East Bell County Bohemian Brass Band and Barbecue Society in 1968 while playing for the Lions Club Follies. Through this group of musicians, Leroy entertained so many with polkas, waltzes, and just good, old country music, as he was a master trumpet player and pianist. Since his band played for the barbecue at the parties, they played often and attracted the attention of Clem Mikeska, who soon featured them in his float in the Belton July Fourth Independence Day parade and in the Temple Christmas Parade for 48 years. Leroy and his band entertained thousands every year through the streets of Belton and Temple. Leroy was heavily involved with county and state service during his working years. He was a member of the Republican Party of Bell County, and was a voting delegate to the State Republican Convention in 2000. He was a member of the Central Texas Peace Officers Association, Texas Department of Public Safety Officers Association, Texas State Troopers Association, Texas State Highway Patrol Association, and National Troopers Coalition. He held a Master Peace Officer Certificate from Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education.

On the community level, Leroy served on the East Bell County Water Supply Corporation Board of Directors. He worked for the East Bell County Youth Boosters Association, and was active in Rogers ISD Athletic Boosters Association, Band Boosters, and Parent Teacher Organization. Leroy was a life member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall, and Bell County Youth Farmers Association as well as Farmers’ Mutual Protective Association of Texas, Germania Farm Mutual Insurance Association, Texas Farm Bureau of Bell County, Production Credit Association, and Temple Chamber of Commerce. With all of this, his greatest joy was his family and the farm. In keeping with his dedication to Bell County, Leroy ran for public office in 1996 as County Commissioner Precinct No. 3 and was sworn into office in January 1997. He served as County Commissioner for eight years, retiring in 2004 then served as Bell County Tax Appraisal Liaison officer from 2005 to 2013. Leroy served on Bell County Bail Bond Board as chairman, Bell County Health Facilities Development Corporation, Bell County Agricultural Development Corporation, Industrial Development Corporation, Child Welfare Board, Bell County Loss Control Team, Salvation Army Advisory Board, Hill Country Community Action Board, Bell County Committee of the Texas Veterans Land Board, Temple Reinvestment Zone Board No. 1, and Heart of Texas Boy Scouts Citizen of the Year Presentation. Leroy was awarded the Temple Jaycees Trooper of the Year Award, Temple Knights of Columbus Trooper of the Year Award, Texas FFA Long Star Farmer Degree, Bell County Sheriff's Department Certificate of Appreciation Award, VFW Voice of Democracy Awards Citation, and Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. He was also the Texas State Honor Guard Representative to the National Memorial Service for veterans held in Washington, D.C., in 1992. Leroy had many interests such as farming and ranching, boating and water sports, but his favorite thing to do was to “toot his horn” or play his electric piano and sing. He was an accomplished bugler and trumpet player as the leader and founder of the East Bell County Bohemian Brass Band and Barbecue Society and the Clem Mikeska Barbecue Band. He made music with the Seaton Brass Band in East Bell County and played with the Gentries country and western band during and after high school. With his musical talents, he provided many patriotic presentations across Bell County for Temple, Rogers, Belton, and Troy ISD DARE Programs,
Temple Youth Softball Association local and state competitions, Rogers Youth Softball Association, the 1995 Republican Party of Bell County fundraiser with Texas Governor George Bush, Jr., the funeral service for Texas Governor John Connally, numerous Memorial Day services, and Texas State conventions and conferences. Leroy helped to lay to rest many fallen Texas State Troopers as a member of the Texas Department of Public Safety State Honor Guard, and veterans and friends by trumpeting “Taps” at their final services. His very favorite presentation was done at Ocker Brethren Church for the Veterans of War on Veterans Day and the sunrise services on Easter Sunday at Ocker Church. Leroy is survived by his wife of 39 years Karyl; sons Kevin and Lindsey Schiller of College Station and Kent and Monica Schiller of Mineola; daughters Carrie and Tim Walsh of San Francisco, California, Kelly and Dennis Arnold of Academy, and Amy Schiller of Honolulu, Hawaii; brother Weldon and Diane Schiller of College Station; sisters-in-law Janice and Charles Douglas of Belton and Helen Bomar of Belton; grandchildren Elizabeth and Cooper Schiller, Lilly, Bella, Neva, and Rosalie Schiller, Mason and Aubrey Walsh, and Kylie and Drew Arnold; and nephews and nieces Evan Schiller, Kory and Lauren Douglas, and Will and Emma, Curt Bomar, Casey and Penny Bomar and Steven and Shelbi, Jeffri, and John King, and Sydney, and Addison, Ashley and Kyle Cox, and Camden, and Kori, and Jill Douglas. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and all his aunts and uncles. Leroy burned the candle at both ends and in the middle. His philosophy was to live life to the fullest as a full and participating member of his community, state, and nation. Leroy believed life is a gift from God, and what you do with it is your gift to God, so he wasted no time being idle. He cherished his family and his farm and provided for and protected them both. It’s pretty easy to take the farmer off the farm, but near impossible to take the farm out of the farmer. On this day, we can hear the tractor cranking up as Leroy sows the crops of heaven, patiently awaiting the rains, and looking forward to the harvest, blowing his trumpet for the heavens, and playing his piano singing “Amazing Grace!” Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 26 at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple. Lada Children in Summer Josef Lada (1887-1957), Czech artist, illustrator, and cartoonist, is best known as the illustrator of Jaroslav Hašek’s World War One novel The Good Soldier Švejk. Born in the small village of Hrusice in a cobbler’s family, he went to Prague at the age of 14 to become an apprentice binder. Entirely self-taught, he created his own style as a caricaturist for newspapers, and later as an illustrator. He produced landscapes, created frescoes and designed costumes for plays and films. Over the years, he created a series of paintings and drawings depicting traditional Czech occupations, and wrote and illustrated the adventures of Mikeš, a little black cat who could talk. First Czech newspaper appears in Texas in 1879
Wednesday, February 15, 2017
On February 6, 1879, the first issue of the Texan, the first Czech newspaper in Texas, appeared. Though the periodical, published by E.J. Glueckman, lasted little more than a decade, it reflected the rich influence of Czech culture in Texas and was just the first of many publications to come. Czech immigrants came to Texas in the early 1850s and were inspired by the glowing descriptions of countryman Josef Arnošt Bergmann. This pioneer, known as the “father” of Czech immigration to Texas, wrote of the freedom and fertile land available in the Lone Star State. Austin, Fayette, Lavaca, and Washington counties in Central Texas saw the growth of Czech settlements. The immigrants brought with them their family-oriented farming way of life and many religious and social societies. They also added to the fabric of the state’s ethnic culture with a wealth of folk stories, music, dance, and food. Immigration to Texas reached its zenith in the years before World War I, when foreign-born Czechs numbered over 15,000 in the state. By the end of the 20th century, more than 30 Czech newspapers and periodicals
had been published, and a number of societies and festivals honored Czech heritage in Texas. Gary E. McKee Editor/Photojournalist Texas Polka News www.polkabeat.com —SPJST—
