Lodge 15, Buckholts reports on February meeting
The February 2017 meeting of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts was called to order at 4 p.m. by President Mary Rodriguez. It took place in a very unusual location - the William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home in Temple. This is where Vice President Doug Williams resides at the present time. He was not able to travel to Buckholts for the meeting so we just loaded up and held the meeting in Temple. Doug had to return to the hospital soon after the last meeting as he developed pneumonia and had a cardiac vascular problem. We are so happy to report that he is doing much better We started the meeting with Sandie Fischer leading us in the Pledge of Al-
legiance followed with a moment of silence in memory of our departed members. Treasurer Sandie Fischer gave the financial report, which was approved as read. In old business, we still have not gotten the cement skirting done. The person who was scheduled to do it became seriously ill. We had to find someone else to do the job. The cold and wet weather had caused a delay as well. We hope to get it completed in the near future. In new business, we want to congratulate Mary Rodriguez for getting so many bookings and getting the lodge rolling again. She is doing a great job as our new president. We appreciate all she is doing so much. Next Meeting—March 13 The next meeting will be on Monday, March 13. We hope you can meet with us. Mary Rodriguez made the motion that we adjourn, seconded by Doug Williams. Dorothy Tomasek, Secretary —SPJST—

Secretary Jvonne Elwood called roll; Youth Leader Emilie Tischler was absent. Jvonne then read the minutes from the January meeting. Brenna moved to accept the minutes as read. David Kerlin seconded, and members voted to accept them. Brenna gave her first budget report. Current balance stands at $5,366.86, which Brenna informed us was about $2,000 more than February of last year. $3,758.54 was spent in taxes and insurance; $800 came in in rentals. Brenna also told us how she received a surprise call from the Granger Villa in need of using our kitchen for four days to prepare meals for the nursing home residents. Next month’s statement will reflect this rental. Jvonne shared correspondence received which included the notice of certificate being paid for deceased member Gordon Hejl and a memo detailing the

criteria for receiving the yearly premium refunds. Bridget reported on FAC business. She informed us the spring meeting will be held Sunday, March 19 in Academy and handed around an info sheet showing some discounts we were eligible as members to receive on various purchases. Bridget then provided receipts for supplies she had purchased and requested reimbursement. Members agreed purchases were valid and granted Bridget her reimbursement. Jvonne reported that she attempted to contact the members who are receiving their 50- and 75-year pins. She said she was unable to reach everyone. It was decided to have their pins mailed to them from the Home Office, and Jvonne will mail off pertinent paperwork. Bridget advised members that she is waiting on information regarding the awarding of Outgoing Officer plaques. Members decided to award both Outgoing Officer plaques as well Lifetime Achiever Awards to Leslie Loessin, Ruby Loessin, and Norma Cavanaugh. David Kerlin went on to suggest installing a changing table in the women’s restroom. All agreed this was an excellent idea, and David said he would shop around for the best deal. A new closing hinge was installed on the back door, and he also requested a new lock on the side door to which members concurred. While working on the restoration of the upstairs window, David noticed places where either window or air conditioning units are leaking down the walls. It was decided David would take necessary action to alleviate these leaks. In addition, David also reminded us that the upstairs needs to be cleaned of members’ personal items. David then made the suggestion of purchasing an additional stove for the kitchen, to which Brenna (as hall manager) stated she had not been approached with any requests for more cooking space. It was decided to hold off on purchasing another stove at this time. David volunteered to list the old, unused stove on Craig’s List. The subject of purchasing new tables was again brought up. David said he has seen some for roughly $75 apiece and suggested purchasing two tables a month. Brenna brought up purchasing smooth topped tables if at all possible as they are easily cleaned. David said he would see what he could find. The everlooming subject of installing new air conditioning units was broached again. David informed us that the electricians he contacted previously had not gotten back to him; he will try contacting them again. On a final note, David displayed his newly restored window that he is

Lodge 24, Cyclone: new attendees eligible for $100 prize at March 13 meeting
Lodge 24, Cyclone met on a cool, windy night amid fields primed for the planting season. Fever is running high among our farmers. The meeting was called to order by President Daniel Wilde at 7:02 p.m. We had the Pledge of Allegiance and a silent prayer for our deceased members. Margaret Mikeska read the minutes as corrected. Linda Wilde gave the treasurer’s report. The lodge received its incentive award check. There was no youth report. Brenda Maddux gave the hall and bar reports. She and husband Mark are going above the call of duty with Jason Hoelscher’s support. We are fortunate for their running the hall. Shirley Hoelscher resigned as Vice President/FAC. Brenda Maddux has reassumed both positions. Final plans were made for the Red Ravens dance. Repairs were completed. Bids are being collected for electrical work. One bid was submitted, and more to come soon. Wood is being purchased for the Mother’s Day barbecue. A discussion was held about the new lodge incentive rules. We have one member who may be able to sell life insurance. Several ideas about special occasions were advanced. An idea of having a door prize was also discussed. An idea of offering a $100 door prize did not get any traction. That being the case, this writer will put up a $100 bill in a drawing at the March 13 meeting; anyone who was not on the list of attendees at the February 13 meeting is eligible. So - come on out, Lodge 24 members - you could be the lucky winner at the March 13 meeting! Microwave to Serve By d.knape The modern woman makes no meals she thaws them from a box, she rather text from her cellphone has videos to watch Recipes from old cook books she never cared to save, she saves energy for more important things she’s got a Microwave There’s carry-out too or quick drive-through she opts for the fast lane, meals on-line work out just fine the stove is just a pain Supper is served she quickly learned when in a box preserved, to cook a meal is no big deal just Microwave To Serve. —SPJST—

member, and later became a 4-H leader. He was a member of New Tabor Brethren Church where he served as elder and member of the Men’s Brotherhood. Later, his enjoyment was spent attending faithfully, the Caldwell Livestock Auction every Wednesday, watching cattle run through and visiting with friends there. He attended many of his children’s and grandchildren’s basketball and baseball games. He also enjoyed watching polka shows and listening to radio polka music and the old western music from the 40s and 50s era. He loved to get Emily to go ride the pastures and check or feed the livestock. The most important thing to him was family and getting together at his family for a meal at his remodeled homestead farm house as often as possible. He was very proud of his family heritage. Expression of Sympathy
We, the members of SPJST Lodge 28, East Bernard, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of EDWIN JOSEPH (EJ) KUBENA On Tuesday, November 8, 2016, Edwin Joe (EJ) Kubena left this world to be with his Lord and the love of his life Florence (Zeke) Kubena. EJ was the oldest son of Henry and Annie Kubena. He was born February 27, 1927. EJ served in the United States Navy during World War II. He married Florence Oldag after she proposed. They had seven EJ Kubena sons - Edwin, Jerry, James, Patrick, David, John, and Joseph. Over the years, EJ’s family grew to include seven daughters-in-law, 25 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren. EJ was a member of SPJST Lodge 28, East Bernard for more than 73 years. He was also a long-standing member of the American Legion Post No. 226 and contributed to many of the building projects at the legion hall and called bingo for over 30 years. Many people will remember him as a hard working cotton gin operator at Kubena Gin Company or from his many years of service to East Bernard ISD, but all who knew him will remember the soft spoken gentle man that we all loved to call Grandpa EJ. During his life, EJ touched many people through his music and his light heartedness. He used his music to entertain in nursing homes and to praise by playing at polka masses at Holy Cross Catholic Church. He played accordion for many of the local Opry shows and even played on the Big Joe Polka Show. His favorite audience was playing for his family as they gathered around the kitchen table to play dominoes or playing the “Chicken Dance” just one more time for the grandkids. Anyone who
knew him will truly miss him, but those who knew him best know that he is truly happy again waltzing with “his girl” to “Zeke’s Lovely Waltz.” Funeral mass was held Tuesday, November 15 at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard with entombment in Holy Cross Catholic Church Cemetery. Visitation was held Monday evening, November 15 from 5 to 8 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. May our departed member and friend rest in peace. Respectfully submitted, Helen Kelner, Secretary —SPJST—

Not also that a simple period is used after the date. * * * * *
Proper nouns, that is, names of persons, places, things, nations, etc. (but not religious bodies or organizations), titles of books, films, etc. take capitals. Example:
Karel Dvořák, Wilsonovo nádraží, Dunaj, Angličan, Čechy, Smetanova opera, “Prodaná nevěsta”, etc., and Naše římskokatolická cirkev; Veliká slovanská podporujíci jednota. Capitals are not used for emphasis or for news headlines in Czech. On the whole, the use of capital letters is rather restricted in Czech. * * * * *
Here are other important points in spelling:
Pronouns and possessive adjectives of the polite-formal usage are capitalized, as are those of the familiar-informal usage: Vy, Vám, Váš; Ty, Tvůj, Tobě.
The latter are always in caps. The polite form is capitalized only when referring to one person. If you are referring to a group (plural) then the pronouns are not capitalized. * * * * *
A common error made is when the formal Vy, Vás, Vám are used with a plural verb, although only one person is being addressed. Do not use a plural verb unless you are speaking to more than one person.
