Readers Write

I read Ms. Zavodny’s editor’s note in the March 1 issue re: recommendations of the Publication Committee. While all recommendations look good to me, I wondered if the Committee considered publishing the Věstník on the SPJST website. Members could be notified by email when the latest issue is posted. I realize that not all members are interested in digital reading so print issues could be made available upon request. Thanks for the opportunity to share. John Chaloupka Lodge 92, Fort Worth Editor’s Note: Thanks, Brother John, for your note. The Věstník is available by email. It is sent electronically on Tuesday mornings so our email subscribers are the first to receive their copies each week! Subscribers can receive the Věstník by email, mail, or both. Subscribe online at spjst.org; send an email to info@spjst.org; or call the Home Office 254-773-1575. Thank you for reading the Věstník each week and for your membership in SPJST —SPJST—

Celebration of Our 40th Wedding Anniversary By Dr. Bob Uzzel • Lodge 6, Cottonwood

On Sunday February 19, 2017, Debra and I celebrated 40 years of Holy Matrimony. The day began with morning worship at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Corsicana, Texas. The message was delivered by our son-in-law, Reverend Kenneth Prox, who was accompanied to the service by our daughter Ericha Prox and our granddaughters Kendra and Kayla Prox. Also in attendance was our grandson Richard Walker, a member of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco. The service was followed by lunch at La Pradera Mexican Restaurant and Cantina in Corsicana. The day was concluded with our attendance at a concert at KJT Hall in Ennis featuring my longtime Facebook friend Becky Livermore of Mount Vernon, Iowa. Her polka band is known as Barefoot Becky and the Ivanhoe Dutchmen. When Becky learned that the day marked our anniversary, she was kind enough to perform an anniversary song for us. Debra and I met in her hometown of Fairfield, Freestone County, Texas. At the time, she was working for Fairview Manor Nursing Center, and I was working for the Texas

Department of Public Welfare (now Health and Human Services) in nearby Teague. Over the years, she has held a number of nursing positions, and I have worked both as a social worker and as a teacher. I have served as pastor of AME congregations in Dallas, Fort Worth, Blooming Grove, Maypearl, Kaufman, and Ennis prior to my appointment to Corsicana on November 19, 2016. We believe that God still has much for us to do before I reach our church’s mandatory retirement age in 2026. My book on Debra’s family tree—The Durhams of Fairfield: An African American Genealogy—was published in 2015. My speech to the Freestone County Genealogical Society at the Teague Community Center on February 28, 2015, was covered by The Teague Chronicle. The article correctly stated that I began my career in Teague in 1974 and now plan to retire in Freestone County. I thank God for the 40 years Debra and I have enjoyed together and pray that we have many more to come! —SPJST—

Everything is looking great. The outside and inside windows have been closed in, and new birch paneling has been installed over the old sheetrock inside the hall. Phase 1 of our remodeling is well on its way, and all in attendance were very impressed with the work that has been done so far. Our next project includes the drilling of a new water well. Phase 3 will include remodeling the bathrooms, kitchen, and bar area. This will have to wait until the water well is drilled so that all plumbing fixtures can be replaced. Holly Narro gave the FAC and youth club reports and informed everyone of the visit to the nursing home and the outing at the ice skating rink. Under old business, the spring meeting was discussed. Registration will be at 1:30 p.m. with the meeting starting at 2 p.m. New Tabor is hosting this year, and a meal of Subway sandwiches, chips, drinks, and cookies will be served. SPJST loan documents were also discussed, and Randy and Betty will be getting the forms filled out and returned to the Home Office. Under new business, the need for a fundraiser was discussed to help pay for the improvements being done around the hall. A reverse raffle was discussed for sometimes in November.

Next Meeting—April 2 The meeting was adjourned by President Randy Gass until our next meeting on April 2 which will be held after the spring meeting (at approximately 5 p.m.). Fraternally submitted, Kyle Skrabanek, Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 18, Elgin praised for community donations

Our February meeting had a better attendance. Lodge 18, Elgin asked the Home Office for help, and they were there to support us and show us that we do matter. Thank you for the pizza, door prizes, and most of all, the support you gave. The community may not realize how much we do for it. Maybe we need to blow our horn! We would love to see the community come to our meetings and see just what SPJST is all about. Czech heritage. Many of our grandparents came to America. Most of them worked on farms and ranches in these areas. They settled here and bought farms and ranches. Some started businesses like grocery stores, or what were known as dry good stores. We have a lot to be thankful for. We must not forget where we all came from. We need to get back to the important values in life. Our youth are growing up with very little guidance. You as parents know . . . you try to teach them right from wrong . . . they come home from school or some function . . . and the things they hear and see. You know that some parents believe they should be friends with their children. We know that doesn’t work; they need guidance. How else will they know right from wrong? Why do we promote the dances at SPJST Lodge 18? Well, it is a friendly family atmosphere. We have families bring their young children; they are always welcome. We have family birthday parties. So you see, we are more than just a building. Come out and see for yourself. SPJST has a lot to offer, but we need community involvement. I just wanted to say thank you to the members who came to the meeting. It was great to see you, and we hope you

On a full moon night with acres of fertile land to be planted, Lodge 24, Cyclone met in the lodge home, Flag Hall. The meeting was called to order by President Daniel Wilde at 7:07 p.m. The minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Margaret Mikeska. The minutes were approved as read. Treasurer Linda Wilde gave an in-depth report including the Red Ravens dance and important lodge matters. The Red Ravens will be on our stage again on February 17, 2018. Brenda Maddux gave the bar report and the FAC report. The bar is being mined for good profits by Brenda and her workers. Their being at the hall until 2 a.m. and longer is not well enough appreciated in this writer’s opinion. They are making the money roll in for the lodge. Jason Hoelscher shares in the work. There will be a district meeting in Academy on Sunday, March 19; May 6 is the SPJST Car Show at Star Hall; May 6 is also Join Hands Day which the adult lodge will make blessing bags with the youth; 100 Pennies Drive ends on March 31; and the State 42 Tournament is April 1 at the Home Office. Brenda Maddux gave the hall report. Old business was the mentioning of articles for the Vestnik. Daniel and Wilbert went to Kosse and purchased three cords of wood for the Mother’s Day meal. A discussion of the price of chicken followed. Posters will start to be made. A new, tall ladder is to be purchased, and the parking lot lighting will be addressed. Rosie Craft’s birthday is March 17, and Robert Macek had a birthday on March 3. The winner of the $100 prize was Rosie Tepera Craft. There were six people who were in the running. Thank you, Betty! President Vitovsky called the March meeting to order at 7 p.m. Margaret Krajca led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. On the sick list was Magnolia Young. Cereal donations can be dropped off at the hall on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. All cereal collected will be donated to the local food bank. A final report was given by JoAnn Needham and Brad Jones on the annual fundraiser. The dinner, dance, raffle, and auction was held on February 25, which was enjoyed by all. Top prize winners were Jessica Puente - riding lawn mower; Laurie Butler - $1,000; Betty Macalik - 55-inch television. Thank you, JoAnn and Brad, for making this event a huge success! Lodge 29, Taylor supports Eagle Scout project

President Ronnie Rieger called the meeting to order on Thursday, March 9, 2017. He led the Pledge of Allegiance and had a moment of silence in honor of our departed members and the military that served our country. Tammy Cannon was absent. The February minutes were read and approved. Ronnie gave the treasurer’s report in Tammy’s absence. Vice President/FAC Sharon Kaderka thanked everyone who helped at our recently held fundraising auction. She inEvery year, Flag Hall has the Red Ravens from El Campo come for our February winter polka dance. But this year, it just did not seem right to call it a “Winter Polka Dance” as the temperature outside was in the 80s. What a beautiful day! The dance was filled with good hamburgers cooked by own lodge president Daniel Wilde and assembled by our lodge members. A great selection of drinks was provided by our bar chairman, and what better than good music, as always, by the Red Ravens. Yours truly, Linda Wilde, was celebrating her birthday with her parents, sister, nephew, aunt, uncle, and friends. Now, I will not tell you the age . . . I will

formed us of the District Two Spring Meeting at Lodge 177, Academy on Sunday, March 19. Desserts are needed, and there will be a silent auction for the youth. On Saturday, May 6, the SPJST Car Show will be at Lodge 47, Seaton. It was decided we would do our Join Hands Day project at the car show. SPJST State 42 Domino Tournament will be held on Saturday, April 1 at the SPJST Home Office. After discussing the Relay for Life sponsorship, Mary Jane Pustejovsky made a motion to donate $150, and Albin Machu seconded. The motion passed. Cristy Girod reported District Two held a skating party with around 60 people in attendance. Afterwards, they had

a workshop and pizza at the Home Office. Cristy introduced Brandon Girod who read a letter regarding his Eagle Scout project which will be building campfire benches at SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC). Lyn Rieger made a motion to donate $100 towards the project, and Sharon Beran seconded. The motion passed. Jesse Pospisil, on behalf of the Property Committee, thanked everyone for their contributions towards the auction fundraiser. He also discussed other matters that the property committee is working on. Ronnie discussed the auction fundraiser and thanked everyone for their help at the auction.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Hosts Winter Polka Dance leave you guessing! But, we did have a wonderful time! The band finished the evening with “Thanks for a Wo n d e r f u l Evening,” and I truly tell you, it was a wonderful evening. I was thrilled to get to dance my favorite Red Ravens’ song, sung by drummer Daniel Jobb entitled “A Little Bit of Heaven” with my favorite dance partner, my loving husband of 40 years, Daniel Wilde. I have to admit that he did

smell from grilling all those hamburger patties! It made me hungry enough to want another burger! A special treat for my birthday was when my dad Anton Vrazel and uncle Alfred Vrazel got on stage and joined the band for a few songs. Texas Polka Music Museum hosts Texas Music Festival at Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall By Justin Everett of Lodge 24, Cyclone

On March 5, 2017, the Texas Polka Music Museum held its13th annual Texas Music Festival at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. TPMM proudly displays memorabilia from various Texas polka bands and is located in Schulenburg. Visiting the museum would be a wonderful treat for any polka music lover. The All Around Czechs polka band kicked off the fun by playing plenty of beautiful Czech polkas and waltzes. I’m sure all of the polka dancers had plenty of exercise since the boys played lots of fast-paced polkas. Polka music veterans Fritz and Scott Hodde even joined the band on stage to play the famous Spanish number “El Rancho Grande.” After the All Around Czechs closed out their

performance, there was an auction and raffle held to benefit TPMM. The next band to grace the Star Hall stage was the Czech Melody Masters. The Czech Melody Masters have been performing all over Texas since the 1990s and are still going strong. The band played beautifully on many well known Czech polka and waltz tunes such as “Looking for my Sweetheart” and everyone’s favorite, “The Shiner Song.” The large crowd of polka fans at Lodge 47 proved that TPMM’s Music Festival had a great turn-out. A big thanks to everybody who attended and helped with the event. Be sure to visit the museum if you are ever in the Schulenburg area.

Lodge 196 Houston-West reports on March meeting

On Sunday, March 12, Lodge 196 , Houston-West met for its monthly meeting after a wonderful lunch featuring barbecue chicken prepared by Travis Wager. The meeting was called to order by President Mark Childres at 2 p.m. After the roll call of officers and member count, it was established that we met the requirements for a meeting. The minutes and treasurer’s reports were read and approved. There was discussion about several maintenance issues of the building, and some discussion about paving the parking area to solve the muddy parking problem. The main topic of discussion was the upcoming Easter egg hunt. We settled on the amount of food, eggs, toys, and other things to do besides the egg hunting. An update on the gifts we have and the donations that area businesses have provided was presented. The business being completed, Mr. Childres asked for and received a motions to adjourn, and the meeting ended at 3 p.m. Alma Schultz’s birthday was celebrated with a cake and the singing of

Fire Ant Treatments

There are numerous ways to manage fire ants, but they are often broken into two categories: broadcast treatments and individual mound treatments. Individual mound treatments are used to treat one mound at a time, are labor intensive, and may result in more pesticide being applied to the environment. Broadcast treatments spread product (granular or bait) over a large area. Individual mound treatments include pouring boiling water onto the mound, using insecticide mound drenches, spreading insecticide granules onto the

17

mound and watering them in, sprinkling insecticidal dusts on top of the mound, or using bait-formulated insecticides around the perimeter of the mound. There are also many “home remedies,” but be advised that many of these do not kill fire ants. Many home remedies make the fire ants move to a new location (often one to two feet away), but do not kill the ants. Bait-formulated insecticides most often consist of a defatted corn cob grit coated with soybean oil; the soybean oil is where the active ingredient (what kills the pest) is dissolved. Worker ants collect bait as a food source and take it back to the colony to share with other ants, including the queen. Depending on the ac-

2016 Local Lodge Fraternalist of the Year Nancy S. Kelly

Lodge 180, Burleson • District Three

Nancy has been an S P J S T member for 29 years. She is married to E r n e s t Kelly, Jr., and they have three children, Nicole Siese, Robert E. Barnett, Jr., and Stephen C. Barnett. Lodge 180, Burleson Fraternalist of the Year Nancy S. Kelly shares her bio of lodge and community service. Thanks to Nancy for her dedication to SPJST.

In the beginning of 2016, I served as reporter for Lodge 180, Burleson. I felt the need to prepare interesting articles to be placed in the Věstník to outline the lodge’s activities and plans for future endeavors. One of the articles that was posted in the Věstník piqued the interest of a deceased member’s son, who is currently a member of Lodge 92, Fort Worth. He now resides in another state, but the article drew his attention. I was proud that I had a small part in his recognition that Lodge 180 was still in existence and working toward becoming a functioning lodge. Due to the realignment of officers following the death of the treasurer, I was appointed secretary of Lodge 180 in April 2016. I also retained the position of reporter. I felt the need to take detailed notes as secretary so that factual information could be reported to any Lodge 180 officer and/or any Supreme Lodge Officer. I take my responsibilities very seriously and when called upon to discuss any particular item, I felt that I was prepared and able to do so. I accepted the duties of president of

Lodge 180 in July 2016, while retaining the duties of reporter. Upon acceptance of the president’s position, I took the responsibilities with dedication, devotion, and integrity to fulfill these obligations. I believe these characteristics are crucial to the role of lodge president. I feel in my heart that these foundations are necessary to honor this position. I was also able to prepare and produce documents which have led Lodge 180 in fulfilling its obligations to the IRS, while striving to obtain our tax-exempt status. I received much needed help in completion of this particular obstacle. I feel compelled to mention that help was received from the Supreme Lodge and Lodge 180. I could not have done this alone. I have been able to obtain a desirable meeting place, make suggestions to promote growth for the lodge, in order to become a recognizable organization within the community. Lodge 180 has been able to make monetary contributions to multiple organizations so that others may benefit. While I continue to serve as reporter, I enjoy the challenge of composing articles that will result in readers waiting in anticipation for the next Věstník publication. I really want everyone to be interested in our activities. My role as president has been fulfilling, nonetheless. It brings me great pride in knowing that the members of Lodge 180 have put their faith, trust, and belief in me. My goal as president is to watch our lodge grow, develop, and become a stronger part of SPJST. It is with a humble heart and a dedication that Lodge 180 has again elected me to serve as president for 2017 and as fraternalist of the year. —SPJST—

tive ingredient, baits may cause the queen to die or be unable to produce viable eggs, which gradually kills off the colony. When using baits, results may be slower to observe when compared to individual mound treatments, but can provide 80 to 90 percent suppression for 12 to 18 months. A bonus to broadcasting baits is that the amount of active ingredient is generally very small, which places less chemical into the environment. With any pesticide treatment, read and follow all label instructions. Make sure to water in pesticides if the label instructs to do so. Failure to water in chemicals when recommended by the label does an inadequate job of killing pests. Baits should not be watered in or used before a rainfall event; baits will not be picked up by ants if they get wet. Lodge 202, Jourdanton Recognizes Fraternalist of the Year

Death of a Water Tower By d.knape

Symbol of all small towns in Texas, the water tower represented the reputation of the town itself. No town was too small not to have a water tower. The town’s name proudly painted on its side. A water tower said “Here I Am.” You could see it for miles.

Water towers were like Facebook, message boards that proclaimed “Johnny loves Sally” or “Kilgore was here.” There were signs for graduating Seniors who dared to climb such heights and risk painting their graduation # ”Class of 84”

They were our light houses, signaling the way. You could give directions based on their location. “Two blocks from the water tower” or “go past the water tower, turn right.”

Our town’s water tower had to come down. It was damaged by a tornado. It was a danger and a safety hazard to people they said, and so they cut its legs out from underneath it, using cutting torches, then cleared the area and with a final nudge pushed over the steely giant. Down it came with an inglorious thud.

Like some great beast, it fell to ground in a cloud of dust, gave one last breath and died. Like a great white whale, stranded on a patch of plowed ground, its carcass marveled at by passing strangers.

We say goodbye then, to our monument of the past and to remembered “Small Town America.” Those towering days, now just a memory of how things used to be. The water tower is gone but in my mind, it is still there, proclaiming “This way to Main Street, USA.” How we miss those wonderful times and the wonderful people who used to live there. —SPJST—

Expression of Sympathy

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 17, Novy Tabor, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, JOYCE NELL FLOECK, age 82, of Burleson County who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 14, 2017, with her family by her side. Funeral service was held at Strickland Funeral Caldwell Chapel at 11 a.m. Friday, February 17 with Reverend Joseph Polasek officiating. Burial followed in New Tabor Brethren Joyce Floeck Church Cemetery. The family received guests from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, February 16 at the funeral home. Joyce was born June 3, 1934, at the family home in the Czech community of Hrozanka between Tunis and Snook to parents John and Ella (Zalmanek) Orsag. She learned at an early age what work on the farm was like: working in the garden, the orchard, and fields along with her parents and siblings. She also learned how to sew and cook from her mother. Joyce graduated from Snook High School in 1952, where she was Valedictorian and played basketball. While attending Sam Houston Teachers College, she entered her dorm beauty pageant and was a diligent student graduating in just three years. She married 2nd Lieutenant Jesse C. Floeck, III on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1955, at New Tabor Brethren Church. To this union were born three children - Jesse, IV, Eliska,

and Molly. Also during 1955, Joyce began her teaching career, which would span 37 years in numerous locations. Her teaching career began in Snook, then Fort Hood, Houston, Rockdale, and at Saks and Oxford in Alabama. Joyce was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma chapters in Texas and Alabama during her teaching career. Joyce was able to take a break from teaching during Jesse’s active duty time in the United States Army. She prepared the family for a military life, following Jesse on his many destinations and adventures to Fort McClellan, Alabama, Weil im Schoenbuch and Nellingen Kaserne, Germany, and Elwood, Illinois, before returning to Texas to resume teaching. While in the officers’ wives’ club, she hosted many events, brunches, and meetings, and welcomed new families. During her time as an officer’s wife, she attended a two-week cordon bleu cooking course and many Hail and Farewells; but her favorite events were the military balls. Joyce was always a gracious hostess; she made family and friends feel welcome, hosted bridge parties or simply entertaining. She enjoyed exploring her surroundings and experiencing the various cultures and destinations during her travels. New Tabor Brethren Church was her home church, where she faithfully served God. It was there she was baptized, confirmed, and married. She played the church piano, was a very active member of the choir, the NiftyFifties, the Pastoral relations committee, and Christian Sisters. Joyce served as the financial secretary for Christian Sisters, as well as the financial secretary for the Board of Elders. Joyce was very active in the community with memberships in the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Republican Party Chair, and the Burleson County Czech Choir Singers performing at the Kolache Festival. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor. Joyce’s hobbies included watching sports (especially Aggie games), crocheting in winter months, and gardening. She took great joy in working in her flowerbeds, growing various fruits such as blueberries, Brazos berries, and fruit trees. She also enjoyed canning her own fruits, vegetables, and sharing her recipes. She loved having family and friends over, playing dominoes with her children and grandchildren, going on road trips to see the sights, and preparing delicious meals. In 2009, Joyce was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. When the symptoms intensified, she received care from the Hudson Creek Alzheimer’s special

care facility as well as Traditions Home Healthcare and Hospice Brazos Valley of Bryan. District Two Skating Party and Youth Development Workshop Saturday, February 25, 2017 • Wheels Family Skating Center/SPJST Home Office • Temple, Texas

Dear Vestnik Readers, March 4, 2017, was a busy day for our District Two youth. We began our morning with the annual skating party at Wheels Family Skating Center in Temple from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There were 52 youth members, 13 youth visitors, and 26 adults in attendance. It was great to see everyone again. And, another great happening at the skating party . . . all eight of our District Two youth clubs were represented! Thank you, Granger, Cyclone, Taylor, Seaton, Beyersville, Holland, Round Rock, and Falls County! I must say, I was one proud DYC! (But, of course, I am always proud of you all!) There was no question when noon arrived, everyone was ready for pizza! We headed to the Home Office for pizza and drinks before we began our District Two Youth Development Workshop. Not everyone was able to join us from skating, but I can proudly say we had 40 youth and 12 adults. We began the workshop with questions regarding parliamentary procedure and tried out everyone’s knowledge on rules regarding YAD and camp. Let me

tell you, we have some smart youth! They know those rules. Those answers were coming out before I could finish the question. Could it have been that Cristy and Lynette were throwing chocolate all around the room? It was great, and I am so proud of each of you.

With pie being our food category this year, Heidi showed each youth how to roll out and pinch a pie crust into a cute little pie pan. Our youth made some awesome looking pie crusts. I wouldn’t say they looked delicious though. Neither myself nor anyone else was too eager to

We had two special guests who shared their talent with “hands-on” demonstrations of YAD projects. Former Seaton Youth Leader Heidi Bartek, who is a fantastic cook/baker, and Nancy Wilkins, a talented “you name it, she can make it” craft lady, shared their talents with us.

eat it since it was made out of play dough! Heidi also shared some great tips on the yays and nays of making the crust from scratch and rolling it out. Several youth got to see their first real rolling pins. Groups then rotated to their next ses-

sion which was sewing with Ms. Nancy. She brought hundreds of cuts of small, folded material along with just as many awesome buttons - all shapes and sizes. All youth were given a sewing needle and a piece of thread. With the help of several moms, youth learned how to thread a needle. Each chose a button and a favorite piece of material and sewed the button on it. It was so awesome! Most youth took home more material and buttons to sew together for a larger decoration. All youth, kindergarten to high school seniors, learned something new. Thank you again to Nancy Wilkins and Heidi Bartek for sharing their time and talents with our youth. It was a great workshop, and I appreciate all youth and parents who attended the skating party and/or the workshop. It was awesome, and I look forward to seeing you all soon! Texas Polka News launches subscription drive; gives back to Czech heritage community in celebration of 30th anniversary

Texas Polka News will mark its 30th anniversary in 2018. To celebrate, the paper has launched a drive to reach 3,000 subscribers. “Sure, we want more people reading The News, but we also want to give back to say thanks for supporting the newspaper, polka, and Texas music/ethnic heritage,” said Publisher Theresa Cernoch Parker, who is a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston. Here’s how it works: For every new subscription or renewal from now through January 2018, TPN will donate $5 of the subscription price to the SPJST Youth Program. Not only will SPJST youth benefit from the donated subscription money, $3,000 in prizes will be awarded in June 2018 to the club or organization that brings in the most new and renewed subscriptions. “SPJST congratulates Texas Polka News on its upcoming anniversary and encourages our members to subscribe in support of Texas music and our youth program,” said SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek. “You can find many of our lodge events promoted and covered in the paper each month.”

March is a Double issue! The March 2017 issue includes the Spring and Summer Festival Guide. “No one covers festivals and church picnics like Texas Polka News and polkabeat.com,” Parker said. The guide’s cover story features the 30th anniversary of Bremond Polish Days in June. The guide is also packed with information on German festivals in Tomball and Muenster, the National Polka Festival in Ennis, Maifests in Anhalt, Brenham, and La Grange, Anhalt Cajun Festival, and all of those fests celebrating sausage, kolaches, polka, and other Texas music. “We are proud to once again partner

27

with Janak’s Sausage in Hallettsville to bring you the listing of church picnic dates,” Parker said. “This feature starts in March and continues through October, bringing you dates, along with band lineups, and dinner options at area picnics.” The regular March issue of Texas Polka News celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Jodie Mikula Orchestra with a feature story on the band and lots of great photos. You can also find coverage of the International Polka Association dance in January celebrating the IPA Hall of Fame induction of Carl Finch of Brave Combo, and the 20th anniversary of Czech & Then Some. Editor Gary E. McKee takes a look back at what a typical monthly dance calendar looked like for SPJST dance halls in 1977. Read about the April Texas tour of the Stříbrňanka brass band from the Czech Republic, and the search for the next young accordionist in Texas Folklife’s Big Squeeze contest. Meet the new king and queen, and prince and princess of the Polka Lovers Klub of America Texas Chapter. “We also remember the musicianship of Gus Lindemann and celebrate the history of Blume’s Orchestra,” Parker said. “Enjoy photos from the Ennis Czech Music Festival and Shelby Big 3 Dance. Of course, you have our standard offering of the monthly calendar of dances, festivals, and live music, as well as a listing of USA festivals.” As a bonus to Vestnik readers, Parker will send a Polka On! magnet when you send in your subscription or renewal to the Texas Polka News. President nadace Woody Smith zahájil schůzi, přívítal přítomné, složili jsme přísahu americké vlajce a republice, pro kterou stojí. Rev. Teresie Ryšavá a Eva Gothardová. Nastalo představování ředitelů a úředníků nadace. Tajemník Paul Hlavinka přednesl zápis z minulé výroční schůze a uzavřel jej s opravami.

Těší ho učit češtinu krajajny všech věků a schop-

Přehled událostí by začal slovanských pravěkem, ustanovením slovanských států, jejich dějiny, popis života a činnosti jednotlivých panovníků a významných osob veřejného a kulturního života. Přehled by se ukončil v současnosti a navázal by na přehled začátku přistěhova leství krajanů do Texasu a pokračoval by až do dnešní současnosti. Po krátké přestávce na dobrý oběd jsme zahájili schůzi ředitelů nadace, předseda Sboru ředi telů Clinton Machann zaháji schůzi. Náš tajemník Paul Hlavinka přečetl zápis z poslední schůze a zápis byl schválen s opravami. John Šefčík podal rozsáhlou zprávu o webstránce, archívu dokumen tů a doporučil, aby uložení dokumentů bylo provedeno co nejdříve.

—SPJST—
