ongratulations to SPJST Lodge 232, Houston Midtown! Lodge 232 was chartered into the family of SPJST lodges on Saturday, March 4. David and I thoroughly enjoyed attending the chartering ceremony. What a beautiful, breathtaking facility the lodge members will be meeting in at the Czech Center Museum Houston. I have never been to the Czech Republic, but this is what I have pictured Czech castles to look like in my imagination! I encourage you to stop by and appreciate its beauty if you are in the Houston Museum District area. Best wishes to Lodge 232 and its members. Votes Give Cortni the Win A note was posted in the March 8 Vestnik asking readers to vote for Lodge 24, Cyclone teen Cortni Ashcraft in an online video contest addressing the question, “What does agriculture mean to me? Cortni is pleased to announce that she won a $1,000 scholarship as well as $500 for her ag program at Academy High School. She writes: “Thank you for teaming up on this long journey of voting with me. I would not have won this scholarship without your votes, shares, and shares by word. I’m very grateful for y’all and would like to
send everyone my sincerest thank you for working together as a team in order to make sure I was in the top 5. Congratulations, Cortni! We are proud of you.
Early Vestnik Deadline on April 11 Please note that we will have an early deadline on Tuesday, April 11 at 5 p.m. due to the upcoming Good Friday holiday. This will be for the April 19 Vestnik.
Still to come . . . And . . . still to come, expert genealogist Richard Lesikar has shared his work on Czech schools of East Bell County, and he needs Vestnik readers’ help identifying photos. Thanks to our readers for their submissions each week. We greatly appreciate you and your contributions! —SPJST—

Lodge 15, Buckholts reports on March meeting
Our meeting was called to order at 4 p.m. by President Mary Rodriguez. We met again in Temple this month at the Courtney Texas State Veterans Home. Mary Rodriguez led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a moment of silence in memory of our departed members. All officers were present. We have lost a lot of loved ones here lately in our community. We are really going to miss them. Treasurer Sandie Fischer gave us a report on our finances. We had some large bills this month. One of the pipes underneath the building froze and caused a bad water leak, which made our water bill higher than usual. The electric bill was high also. In old business, we have the cement
stucco job just about completed. In new business, we have a new problem. Recently, the parking area in front of the building has become a race track. They are racing and spinning their wheels and tearing up the surface. In some instances, they have even slung mud on the wall. We discussed how we can put a stop to this. Doug Williams made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Sandie Fischer. We enjoyed homemade cookies and drinks while visiting. It was so good to see Doug and Virginia doing so much better. Next Meeting—April 10 The next meeting will be on Monday, April 10. We hope you can attend. Dorothy Tomascik, Secretary —SPJST—

Ladislav, left, and associate Hugh Bender, second from right, review the Cleerio map application that combines the visual power of maps with the efficiency of data management systems with Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny and SPJST President Brian Vanicek at the Home Office on March 6, 2017. Ladislav has more than 20 years of experience in the area of GIS, mapping, big data, analysis, land surveying, data collection, business development and networking, consulting, and project management. He studied geodetics and cartography. Since his childhood, he has felt attracted by maps, and he is living his dream to dedicate himself to geoinformatics and make it available to the general public every day. In 2009, Cleerio was started with a vision of bringing a high quality and affordable map information system to clients in the public and private sector. “In 2013 after years of growth in the Czech Market, we were invited to Rocketspace, a startup accelerator in Silicon Valley, where our development team spent six months,” Ladislav said. “At the same time, we began winning awards, for example the Deloitte Fast 50 award.” In 2015, a new flagship product was launched which opened Cleerio to new verticals and clients. Shortly after this, Cleerio was backed by a VC fund in order to expand its product line and services to new markets. Cleerio again won the Deloitte Fast 50 Award. “We now service clients in the public and private sector with a broad portfolio ranging from municipal asset management to oil drilling operations,” Ladislav adds. “As we continue our growth, we are ready to bring you the future of geospatial technology today.” For more information about Ladislav’s company, visit cleerio.com.

Fort Worth Friendship Club
The Fort Worth Friendship Club met Wednesday, March 8, 2017, in the new St. Thomas dining room. The meeting was called to order by President Barbara Becknell who welcomed everyone. Guests were Joyce Helgeson, Dick Schiefelbein, and Jacie Skrasek, Debbie’s cute granddaughter. Guests and new members were Judy deGrandchamp (Rose Ann’s friend), Patti Williams, and Adele and Harold Strand (Helen Skrasek’s sister and brother-inlaw). The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all. There certainly was a lot of green in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. It was green hats, green beads, green glasses, and I believe almost everyone wore something green and the table decorations were green. It was voted to dispense with the reading of last month’s minutes since we were having a speaker. Treasurer Margaret Sears was not present, and President Barbara read the financial report which was accepted as presented. Mar-
Happy 61st Anniversary, Joe and Jean Motl of Lodge 155, Austin!
Happy 61st anniversary to Joe and Jean Motl of Lodge 155, Austin. They celebrated their special day on March 9, 2017. Their family treated them to a seafood supper at Cherry Creek Catfish in Leander on Sunday, March 12. Congratulations, Joe and Jean!
garet was in Colorado taking care of her late brother’s estate. Margaret’s husband became ill while there, and ended up spending a few days in the hospital. They are home now, and her husband is doing well. Sunshine person Darlene Tompkins reported no cards were sent during the month. It was reported Lorraine Cross, who was absent, had eye surgery recently. We wish her well. We had two door prizes brought by Barbara Becknell and Libbie Vrla with Libbie and Mary Ann Krivanek being the winners. I just have to tell you what all I found in my St. Patrick’s Day sack. There was a package of green marshmallow cookies, socks with shamrock decorations, and green beads with a hanging shamrock. It certainly was in keeping with our social, and I sure enjoyed all the items. Thanks, Barbara! Marie Keller and Betty Krenek were the 50/50 dollar game winners. We had lots of happy winners. In my report, I spoke on my visit to see Camille Bolcer who lives at Sunrise Senior Assisted Living. She has a lovely apartment. The entry way serves as a small kitchen on one side with microwave, small refrigerator, sink, and cabinets. Then she has a small bedroom and small living room with a large bath. I was most curious if she had moved her sewing machine, and she did. The sewing machine was against the wall; in front was a swivel chair and a heavy duty ironing board. This way, she can sew, turn around and iron as she always made quilts, and had the television to the side. She said is it just like home. She also has

two large windows in the bedroom and living room overlooking the courtyard. There is a birdfeeder right outside her window, and she said she enjoys watching the birds feed. I also reported on a phone call from Annie Whitsell which I wrote about last month. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to March celebrants of Barbara Becknell, Margaret Hoenig, Anna Marie Moncrief, JoAnn Wilcox, and Adele Strand whose birthday was on the day of our meeting. May all of you have many more! The singing was accompanied by Harold Strand on the accordion. Our speaker, Dick Schiefelbein, acolyte from Holy Trinity church, was our guest speaker who spoke on the “Return of the Prodigal Son.” He gave all a picture of the painting by Rembrandt and had one projected on the screen. He read a passage of the story and explained the symbolisms in the picture and what each meant such as the light on the father’s face, the position of the father’s hands and his robe, the son’s worn robe and shoes, look on the brother’s face, etc. It was most interesting and enjoyable. Hopefully, he will come again with a different story. We were so happy to have Harold (and his accordion) and Adele Strand join the Club. Before the meeting, he played and we had dancing around the tables and lots of singing especially the Irish tunes. When Harold finished his lunch, he played again and even played a few Czech songs with singers of Adele, Rose Ann, and Mary Ann Krivanek to help entertain everyone. Harold and Adele recently moved from

Waco into the Trinity Courtyard Retirement Home. We are so happy to have you. Hope you bring your accordion again. It reminds us of Joe Kozel as he used to play before the meetings which we have certainly missed. We still miss both Joe and his wife, Mary Ann. President Barbara reminded everyone that April is a designated month in which we bring non-perishable food items for St. Thomas Food Pantry, or you can make a cash donation. April hostesses will be Lupe Esparza and Jo Ann Wilcox. Betty Krenek will place the order for the fried chicken. The theme will be “Easter,” and color will be anything pastel. Following the meeting, grace was said, and the two priests from St. Thomas Church joined us for lunch. Both were wearing their black attire. Each sat at a different table, and the ladies at each table outfitted them in green hats and green beads - which certainly looked good on the black - and they seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves. A great lunch was enjoyed, and it was such a fun and entertaining day . . . good food, great speaker, wonderful music, and singing. All were thanked. Our next meeting will be Wednesday, April 5. Don’t forget your dish for lunch to share and your food items for St. Thomas Food Pantry.

Other Margaret Sears, Rose Ann Spann, and I want to thank Anna Marie Moncrief for inviting us to the Mozart Gala performance by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra recently. Prior to the Symphony, we enjoyed dinner at the City Club which was most enjoyable. Thanks, Anna Marie. It was a great evening: good food, great music, and wonderful fellowship. Today, March 22, my great-nephew, Travis Kosarek, flew to Georgia to begin his hike on the Appalachian Trail. He will be gone on his birthday so Lil and I were invited over Sunday for an early birthday celebration. It was such fun and so interesting to learn all about his planning. He gave up his apartment, stored all his furniture and car, made arrangements for all his bills to be paid, etc. Then it was all the planning of his food and clothes he will carry in his backpack. I learned so much - towns are along the way, and there is such a thing as a “bounce box.” He can mail items he won’t need for however long it takes to get to the next town where he can replenish food items, do laundry, eat restaurant food, and sleep in a real bed. With his satellite phone, he will be in contact with his parents, and they will be able to mail supplies ahead to these towns as needed. I hope all goes well for him. He will certainly be in my prayers!
Get Well, Tracy! Get well wishes go out to Tracy Horn who fell recently. No broken bones, but she did have to have some stitches on her eyebrow. She said her glasses didn’t break; she only got stitches to remind her of her fall. Hope to see you April 5. So Until, Keep Smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—
Ennis Sewing Circle
Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, March 9, 2017, in the Sokol Club room. Irene, Ann, Mary Nill, Pat, and I arrived at 8 a.m. We were unable to stretch Mary Nell’s quilt top as two of our quilting horses were missing. We looked all over the hall and couldn’t find them. Pat went home and got two of her horses. Therefore, we got a late start. Thank you to all of the ladies that quilted; Ann Clagett, Dorothy Booth, Pat Fowler, Georgia Holy, Geraldine Kubin, Dorothy Kudrna, Lillie Macalik, Dorothy Prachyl, Irene Prachyl, Dolores Vrana, and Georgie Morales. By lunch time, we had 21 members and guest Bernice Rycek present. President Irene led us in grace, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. Thank you to all for the wonderful food, the set-up, and clean-up. After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for Jeanette Houdek, Libbie Pavelka, Wanda Slovak, Bettie Gillespie, Betty Rogala, Tyler Slovak, Ann Marak, and Agnes Harper. The “Our Father” was recited for the above and our sick members. Secretary Ann read the minutes of our last meeting. Treasurer Dolores gave her report. Both reports were approved as read. Genny Svehlak was absent, so President Irene read a funny article called “Old Geezer.” It was enjoyed by all. Sunshine Lady Dorothy had two cards for us to sign. A birthday card for Joyce Ehrenberger and a thinking-of-you card for Bessie Laznovsky, who at this time is in the nursing home. Thinking of you, Bessie, and wishing you well. Libbie Vrla reported she talked with Bertha Podhrasky’s son Bob and that she and husband Julius are doing okay. Also, she heard from Joyce Ehrenberger that she and Joe are doing well. It is always good to hear about members’ well being. Quilt Scheduler Pat announced we will quilt for Dorothy Prachyl in April and Ann Clagett in May. Mary Nell thanked all who quilted on her quilt. It was really pretty and for her couch with turquoise, white, and some other colors. President Irene thanked Dorothy Kudrna for bringing coffee, and she introduced guest Bernice Rejcek. We hope she enjoyed herself, had a good time, and comes again. President Irene called off her baby quilt session. Maybe down the way she will start it again.

We all thanked and gave President Irene a round of applause for the very nice cookbooks she made for all of us and for the new 2017 member directory. You did a great job. We discussed the April meeting. Since the second Thursday is on Holy Thursday, we wanted to have the meeting another day. We all voted to keep it April 13. President Irene’s tip of the day was how to cut blue jean squares for a quilt top and to use a shower curtain for the backing. She called it a “picnic quilt,” as you put the shower curtain to the grass, It is really neat. Our 50-50 winner was Pat Fowler. I can’t remember if she has won before. President Irene thanked all for attending, for quilting, the delicious lunch, the set-up, and clean-up. Kay Lynn made a motion to adjourn the meeting, and the motion was seconded by Mary Nell. Take care everyone, stay well, come again in April. We miss you when you don’t attend. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

and corporate events with education as the central core and can now add another dimension which a lodge can bring. CCMH founders Bill and Effie Rosene were instrumental in rallying support for the new lodge and both were in attendance for the chartering ceremony. “The formation of an SPJST lodge through the Czech Center Museum Houston denotes an important step in our pursuit of mutual goals, said Mrs. Rosene, CCMH Chair/CEO. “The Center believes that knowing one’s ancestry, culture, and heritage helps one understand his own and to better understand another’s culture. We thank the SPJST and its many officers and members for their efforts in helping to make the new lodge possible. Bill Rosene, CCMH VP Admin and Secretary, echoed Ms. Rosene’s sentiments, stating that, “Language, art, tradition, cuisine, and history all combine to define our respective cultures. By bringing together multiple organizations pursuit of a common cause, every

Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Brandon Girod to build SPJST ENC campfire seating area with Eagle Scout service project
My name is Brandon Girod, and I am a member of SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club. I began my scouting adventure in second grade with the Cub Scouts and crossed over to Boy Scouts in sixth grade. I am now a freshman at Elgin High School and a Life Scout in Troop 182 of Elgin. I have completed 20 merit badges, held several positions of responsibilities, and have been very active with the growth of our troop and its activities. My long journey is now at the point where I am working toward earning the highest and most honored rank in Scouting, that of Eagle Scout. For my Eagle Scout Service Project, I have chosen to help the SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) by building a seating area around a new campfire that includes two circular rows of wooden benches. (I am adding a picture of what my campfire area will look like.) Hundreds of kids all over Texas will benefit from these benches and will make memories around the campfire when they attend camps at the ENC. The area is open from trees

so they’ll be able to see the stars at night. It will be a wonderful experience. This is a big project that will require many hours of labor and approximately $1,200 in materials. As part of my project, I need to request donations to fund materials necessary for construction of this project. Any assistance you can offer to help me achieve my goal of completing this project will be greatly appreciated. The date I plan on assembling these benches is Saturday, May 20, 2017. If you are able to help me out with materials, please let me know and I can arrange a time to come pick them up. If you would like to provide a monetary donation, a check can be made out to SPJST ENC, but please make a note that the money is for my service project. I thank you in advance for anything that you can contribute to this worthy cause. Yours in Scouting, Brandon Girod girodranch@yahoo.com 512-993-7123 —SPJST—

Když někdo víte o možnosti získání nového člena, oznamte jméno a adresu jednomu z našich pojišťovacích agentů, kterým je Freddie Kaluža, Janice Kaluža a Wilburn Willis, aby mohli takového zájemce pojistit.

Holland, Mellisa R. Holt, Mark A. Hutyra, Freddie J. Kaluža, náš president, Jimmy Polanský, Sara K. Pope, Mark A. Řezníček, Frank J. Skeřík, Dorothy Stift, Carl Uptmor a Agnes Irene Wolf z Marable Street. 75 let členství u jednoty oslaví Martha Gerik. Zveme naše člen-

stvo, aby přišli na oslavu tohoto vzácného výročí. Přijdte proto každý dne 2. června 2017 do síně svatého Josefa, kdy oslavíme toto výročí chutnou večeří.. Losování vyhráli John Engelke a Mary Lou Mynář. Po ukončení schůze jsme se dobře pobavili do pozdních večerních hodin. —SPJST—
SPJST Supports Czech Language Class
SPJST President Brian Vanicek, on behalf of the SPJST Home Office, donated $250 and District Two Director Jesse Pospisil donated $150 from his discretionary fund to the Taylor Czech Language Class. These funds will be used to offset expenses for instructional material and supplies. “We endeavor to promote the Czech heritage and culture through an informal classroom atmosphere where the Czech language is read, written, translated, and spoken,” class member Alice Bracewell of Lodge 48, Beyersville says. “Occasionally class time is spent singing Czech songs with the accompaniment of Nolan Werchan on accordion and Bernard Tupa on trumpet.” LEFT PHOTO: District Two Director Jesse Pospisil presents the SPJST checks to Lydia Kurtin.
