ith the blooming of life that Spring brings with it, comes Easter, a day that celebrates the beautiful gift of life itself. Veselé Velikonoce - Happy Easter to our Věstník readers! May your Easter be filled with joy, happiness, and peace. Easter Sunday is one of the most meaningful days on the Christian calendar. Easter commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe died by crucifixion as a sacrifice to atonement. Many symbols are associated with Easter, and understanding these symbols can help Christians and non-Christians alike gain a stronger grasp of this deeply meaningful Christian day of worship.
to members of his royal household on Easter.
• Easter eggs: While Easter eggs may seem like a secular symbol of Easter, their connection to Easter dates back many centuries. CatholicCulture.org notes that the early Christians saw the egg as symbolic of the tomb out of which Christ emerged when he was resurrected. Early Christians even painted Easter eggs, much like parents do with their children today, and even had them blessed and gave them as gifts. Historians believe King Edward I of England, who ruled from 1272 to 1307, dyed boiled eggs and gave them
Early Vestnik Deadline Due to the Good Friday holiday, the deadline for the April 19 Věstník is Tuesday, April 11 at 5 p.m.
• Lamb: According to CatholicCulture.org, the lamb represents Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is the Son of God. The lamb can be connected to Jewish Passover, a Jewish holiday that commemorates the liberation of the Israelites from Egyptian slavery. During the celebration of Passover, each Jewish family killed a lamb as a sacrifice. Christians commonly refer to Jesus as the Lamb of God who God sacrificed so Christians’ sins could be forgiven.
• Clothing: New clothing is another symbol of Easter that traces its origins back further than many Christians may realize. It’s customary for present-day Christians to don their Sunday best when attending Easter Sunday Mass, and the tradition of looking sharp on Easter can be traced to the early Christians, who would wear new white robes for baptisms during Easter services. Eventually, all Easter celebrants began to wear new clothes during Easter services.
• Palm fronds: Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent, taking place one week before Easter Sunday. Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. According to the Gospels, Jesus rode a young donkey into Jerusalem, where the townspeople threw palms in front of him in homage. That practice was a customary sign of respect in Jerusalem, and today Christians believe the palm is a sign of peace. Palms continue to be distributed to the faithful during Palm Sunday Mass.
Combined Vestnik Alert We will also publish a combined issue on May 17 so we will not print a Věstník the week of May 10. Please plan ahead and make a note of this. The May 17 Věstník will feature a special section on the 2017 SPJST Scholarship winners and a listing of the local lodge secretaries. —SPJST—

Treasurer Carolyn Tobola gave a report of income and disbursements, and the treasurer’s report was accepted as read. Copies were made for President Henrietta Veselka and State FAC Frank Horak. Frank Horak gave the fraternal activities monthly news update information to the members and discussed the upcoming state tournaments at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. He reported to us about a new member benefit on the SPJST website and how we could get discounts on items locally and across the country when traveling. He also spoke to us about the cereal food drive the SPJST youth clubs are doing and told us even though we don’t have a youth club, we could still participate in the challenge. All the lodge needs to do is collect cereal boxes or bags and bring them to the next meeting. The Home Office would need a count of the boxes donated and photo to be sent to the SPJST Home Office for the Vestnik. The cereal collected would then go to our local food bank in Schulenburg. State FAC Frank Horak presented Dennis Veselka his SPJST 50-year pin. Frank thanked him for his membership. Dennis was here visiting his family from Florida. In old business, there was discussion to move the lodge’s funds from Prosperity Bank to Fayetteville Bank. Prosperity is charging a $10 service charge each month if the funds are below a certain amount, and Fayetteville bank has no charge. The motion was made by Erline

The 30-foot flag pole at the SPJST Home Office in Temple, Texas, was moved recently from near the corner of Main Street and French Avenue to the Home Office driveway entrance on Main Street. In the old location, the flag’s visibility was hindered by large
magnolia trees. The flag now proudly waves at the Home Office entrance and is visible to all Main Street traffic and visitors to the neighboring United States Postal Service, Social Security Administration, First State Bank, and other businesses.

★★ SPJST Super Cereal Food Drive ★★ Lodge 84, Dallas
Lodge 84, Dallas Treasurer Jim Liska and Youth Leader Lynda Novak, center, present cereal boxes to Maria, director of St. Vincent de Paul in Lancaster.
Dear Readers, I would like to give a big thank you to Ed Carpenter for his huge participation in the statewide project of the Super Cereal Food Drive. It is members like Ed who enjoy helping Lodge 84 with our charity projects to give that helping hand. The Super Cereal Food Drive was so much appreciated by St. Vincent de Paul at one of the main distributions in the Lancaster area. They were so excited just knowing that the 125 boxes of cereal were not just one type of cereal, but something for everyone especially for children, adults, and favorite brands for elderly families. I asked the director of St. Vincent
what else are they in need of to help feed their 100 families. She says, “Anything of a protein, especially peanut butter and canned tuna.” When I told her I would discuss this with our lodge members and add this to our future charity projects, the director put her hands together and thanked the Lord for sending her a special angel. As I left the center, I was so excited to find another charity group for our lodge to support! Thank you, Lodge 84, Dallas youth and adult members, for contributing to the cereal drive. We discussed the sale of hats and teeshirts with results from those selling. All ideas were tossed around to suggestions on how to sell the remainder of the products so that we will be able to complete our Join Hands Day fundraiser project in a timely manner. I know that I have enjoyed selling the shirts and hats and consider it an honor to wear one of the shirts showing that I support the police. Other members of the lodge are wearing the shirts as well. Briaroaks Volunteer Fire Department is having its annual fish fry to raise funds for the department. Several of the lodge members are planning to attend this function to help support them and their needs. We are surely looking forward to some good fish! April birthday celebrants are Sharon Fraiser, Alice Janecka, Delinda Brown, Gordon Cox, Jimmie Waddell, Robert Smajstrla, Jr., Clay Hurtik, Ryan Faulder, Jerry Raney, Dylan Bowden, Jaclynn Janek, and Dorothy Rosenthal. We wish all of these folks a very happy birthday with many more in their future. We discussed our next evening out following the May meeting. It was determined that we will celebrate in May by dining at Red Lobster in Burleson. Our meeting was adjourned, and we
journeyed to Antonia’s Restaurant in Burleson for delicious food and beverages. Following the meeting, we had a birthday celebration for Dylan Bowden with a scrumptious chocolate chip cake, which he had requested. That young man does like his chocolate! We look forward to seeing you at the next lodge meeting which will be held the second Tuesday of the month - May 2. Fraternally, Nancy S. Kelly President/Reporter —SPJST—

minders about the upcoming District Three Youth Achievement Day and overnight on April 22 followed by the District Three Spring Meeting on the 23rd. We also talked about our Join Hands Day event on May 6 and the Flag Day essay deadline ABOVE and BELOW PHOTOS: on May 31. Additionally, the Easter egg decorating fun at youth will be collecting diapers the Ruzicka Family Farm! during the month of May to donate to charity and working on the Tribute to Veterans state project. Czech Couple from Frýdek-Místek, Czech Republic, Visits SPJST Home Office
On Wednesday, March 22, 2017, SPJST, Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS), and Czech Heritage Museum representatives welcomed sisters Lydia Faust of Snook and Margie Vajdak Nohra of Dale and Margie’s daughter Carla Welch of Temple (all members of Lodge 9, Snook) and longtime friend Joyce Faykus of Lodge 29, Taylor. Accompanying them were distant relatives Ferdinand and Ivana Miculka of Frýdek-Místek, Czech Republic, who were visiting
Texas and the United States for the first time. Ferdinand and Ivana live in Místek, a small community located near the village of Palkovice in the Czech Republic. Ferdinand speaks English so the visitors and representatives were able to communicate with each other. It was very interesting learning about their family and customs. Ivana is curator of The Frýdek Castle, a museum in Frýdek-Místek. She also
dances and participates in folk festivals where they play and dance to the folk music that has been passed down from generation to generation. The Miculkas have two sons; one of their sons is an accomplished violinist, and he plays and dances in the festivals. The Texas hosts enjoyed bringing the couple to Temple to see SPJST and the large Czech community. —SPJST—

Czech Center Museum Houston seeks to add solar screen over Courtyard
This is a picture of the Courtyard on the south side of the Czech Center Museum Houston (CCMH) building where there is a Wall of Honor of engraved marble tiles and has been used as a place of respite, to eat lunch, or visit with friends. This area is used infrequently owing to Houston’s summertime heating. We have considered making it more palliative to cover the area with an awning; however, recently the idea came to us of placing solar panels to bring shade to the area and, at the same

time, supply electric power to the grid. In this way, the construction of this shading mechanism will pay for itself over the long term.
We are asking your assistance in underwriting the cost of installation to shade the courtyard. We have been invigorated to continue the proposed project by a $5,000 grant from the Marek Family Foundation. So we are on the way! Please consider joining the tile holders in the next memorial/honorary tile installation. It is a way to celebrate and remember your heritage while you help grow the Museum. Honor a friend or loved one. Inscribe your name or your honoree’s name on a tile as a lasting and meaningful memento of thoughtfulness. It is for someone you love. It is for someone who made a difference. It is for you! Celebrate honoring someone important in your life or your association with the Czech Center Museum Houston. Inscribe your name or your honoree’s name on a gold engraved black marble tile as a lasting and meaningful memento of thoughtfulness and support of the mission of this unique new site. Tile contribution by size: 12x12 is $5,000 - gold frame surround; 12x12 is $1,000; 8x12 is $750; 6x12 is $500; and 4x12 is $250. Your order would be timely for the next installation. Please contact Bill Rosene at 713682-4608 if you have any questions or for more information about purchasing a tile. Effie M. Rosene CCMH Chairman/CEO Lodge 232, Houston Midtown —SPJST—

Old-time Easter Egg Dye
It’s gettin’ on time for Peter Cottontail to come hoppin’ down the bunny trail, gather dye-makin’s from the garden, and spend a nice Saturday coloring eggs. Here’s a simple formula: Eggs 1 teaspoon white distilled vinegar 2 1/2 cups plant-dye material Water
Put eggs in a single layer in a pan with just enough water to cover them completely. Add vinegar and your chosen fruits, vegetables, spices, or leaves. See information below. Bring the water to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove the eggs promptly if you want lighter shades. For darker colors, strain the dye into a bowl with the eggs and let sit in the refrigerator overnight. Submitted by, Dorothy Stuchly Lodge 47, Seaton •••
(Note: The above method boils fresh eggs with dyestuff ingredients, which is a quick process.)
Blue - red cabbage, canned blueberries, pureed frozen blueberries;
Dyeing and Decorating Tips You can also hard boil eggs ahead of time then make dyes/colors in which to soak the eggs. Make the dyes using individual stainless steel, glass, or enamel saucepans for each dye/color. Be sure to add white distilled vinegar to the dye/color - as it acts as a fixative; without it, the dyes won’t stick to the eggs. Approximate ratio: One quart water/2 Tablespoons white distilled vinegar. For each dye/color, choose dyestuff ingredient/s. Boil for 15 minutes and let cool before soaking/dyeing eggs. Strain the dye into a bowl or leave the ingredients; either way, allow to cool to room temperature. Soak boiled eggs (for various periods of time) to achieve the desired colors.

- For deeper colors, use more dyestuff and/or let the eggs soak longer. - For uniform color, strain each dye mixture through cheesecloth or a fine strainer. - Use crayons to make designs — circles, geometrics, your name — on the egg; the crayoned part will not take up any dye. White crayons work especially well. - For special effects, dip half the egg in one color, the other half in another. - Blot the eggs dry or allow them to air dry, as for some colors the dye will rub off while still wet. - Make sure eggs of different colors are completely dry before piling them up in a bowl together, as wet dye from one egg can transfer to another.
- Refrigerate your eggs again after they have been hidden and found, and don't eat cracked eggs or eggs that have been out of the refrigerator for more than two hours; - Don’t eat eggs that sit around in hot water for many hours or overnight. Save those for decorations only; - If your egg hunt involves hard-boiled eggs, it’s wise to keep track of how many the Easter Bunny hides. If you don't find an egg on Sunday, you might be smelling it by Wednesday. Easter Egg Safety - Keep eggs refrigerated before boiling; - Wash your hands thoroughly before handling the eggs; - If you won't be coloring the eggs right after cooking them, store them in the refrigerator; - When hiding eggs, avoid areas where they might come into contact with pets, wild animals, birds, reptiles, insects or lawn chemicals.
