Youth Leader Michelle Newsom also presented a stone in memory of Denisse to the family and lodge for her service and dedication to SPJST. The Auto Mechanic and the Cardiologist Thanks to my classic car buddy and SPJST Car Show supporter Wayne Heugatter who shared this with me . . . just in time for this week’s car show! An auto mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the engine of a Chevy when he spotted a well-known cardiologist in his shop. The cardiologist was there waiting for the service manager to come and take a look at his car when the mechanic shouted across the garage, “Hey, Doc, want to take a look at this?” The cardiologist, a bit surprised walked over to where the mechanic was working on a Chevy truck. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, “Doc, look at this engine. I opened its heart, took the valves out, repaired or replaced anything damaged, and then put everything back in, and when I finished, it worked just like new. So how is it that I make $34,000 a year, and you make $2.5 million when you and I are doing basically the same work?” The cardiologist paused, leaned over and then whispered to the mechanic . . . “Try doing it with the engine running.” —SPJST—

State FAC shares May fraternal updates
Join Hands Day This Saturday Many lodges will observe Join Hands Day on Saturday, May 6, 2017. At print time, 24 lodges had signed up. The number of lodges participating this year on Join Hand Day is down from last year. We hope to have more lodges participate next year. Lodges throughout the state will complete many excellent projects in which youth and adults join together to do good in their communities. Thanks again to all lodges who plan to participate in this worthy event. The Supreme Lodge again will offer the $100 incentive to all lodges that register their projects with the Home Office. You can do this by completing the Join Hands Day flyer and returning it to the SPJST Home Office or registering online at spjst.org. This year, we ask you to share your photos and projects with the Vestnik. If you have any questions, contact Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez at tammym@spjst.com or 800-727-7578 or me at frankh@spjst.com or 254-5340681.
Member Referrals Wanted: Participate in the Monthly Prize Drawing! When it comes to getting new SPJST members, there is no substitute for member referrals. Referral cards received during a given month will go into a drawing for three $25 Walmart gift cards. The individual making the referral also benefits SPJST by helping build a stronger and more active local lodge. On a related note, SPJST is looking for men and women who believe in the fraternal ideal and would like to consider the benefits of being an SPJST sales agent. Contact the Insurance Department for more details.
Mother’s Day Sunday, May14 is a very important day to all of us — and especially our mothers. Mother’s Day is steeped in tradition. Although, we may view it as “just another Hallmark holiday,” it is one of those days that we should all stop and take notice of the special woman or women in our lives that have been there for us through thick and thin. If you are a mom or have a special lady in your life, read on to discover some fun facts about Mother’s Day that you can use to wow and delight her – she will think you are so clever!
Mother’s Day Flower Facts Mother’s Day sees around one-quarter of all flowers purchased throughout the year falling on this holiday.
Carnations are very popular flowers for Mother’s Day and are thought to be made from the tears of Jesus’ mother (Mary) when she wept at his feet the day He was crucified. Pink and red carnations are given to mothers that are still alive while white ones are for those who have passed away.
Studies and research now show that giving a bouquet of flowers has many positive health and psychological benefits. Fun Mother’s Day Facts In the vast majority of the world’s languages, the word for “mother” begins with the letter M.
Ancient Egyptians believed cats were sacred animals and revered ‘Bast’ as the mother of all cats on Earth. In the United States alone, around 122 million phone calls are made to moms on Mother’s Day. Approximately $14 billion is spent on Mother’s Day.
In what was formerly Yugoslavia, children would tie up their mother on Mother’s Day. The only way she could get free would be to pay her children with treats.
Please remember your mother, mother-in-law, and mothers-to-be this month by honoring them at your May meeting. Their nurturing is instrumental in who we become in life. We must let them know how much they mean to us. (I would suggest not to let your children celebrate Mother’s Day by using the last Fun Mother’s Day Fact!)
National Polka Festival We invite all members to the National Polka Festival in Ennis to come help celebrate 51 years of Czech heritage festivities on Friday, May 26 through Sunday, May 28. Held annually on Memorial Day weekend, the National Polka Festival offers an abundance of activities to be enjoyed by the entire family in a small city atmosphere. SPJST is a proud sponsor of the event. The festival kicks off with an opening dance on Friday, May 26 at 7 p.m. featur-
ing polka music and the King and Queen Dance Contest where participants and non-participants are encouraged to wear traditional Czech kroj. The opening dance is a fun event you don’t want to miss! At 10 a.m. on Saturday, floats, bands, and colorful costumes will kick-off the downtown festivities. The parade includes something for visitors of all ages. Enjoy the music of polka bands and our very own SPJST Royalty Court riding on our SPJST Float or the sounds of the award-winning Ennis High School Marching Band. The Shriners make their annual appearance, as well as celebrities, public officials, motorcycles, horseback riders, clowns, kids, and seniors! This giant parade twists through historic downtown Ennis and is sure to please. At 1 p.m., you will find the SPJST Kolache Eating Contest under the main downtown tent. Men, women, boys, and girls can join in the fun to see who can finish eating their kolache first. Prizes will be awarded to the first place winner of each category. You will experience traditions, religious customs, dancing, tastes, sights, sounds, and “a little bit of the Czech Lands” throughout historic downtown and at three spacious air conditioned halls and 14 sensational live polka bands.
SPJST Summer Camp Registration The 2017 SPJST Summer Camp registration is now open. All SPJST members who have graduated kindergarten all the way to a graduating senior in high school are invited to attend camp. The majority of youth who attend camp do so on the basis of youth club participation. However, any young person who becomes a member by May 31 of this year can still pay to attend camp. The cost for the SPJST summer camp program is $250 per youth. This cost includes four nights and five days of camp, 10 meals, BB range, archery, high and low challenge courses, canoeing, blobbing, and many more camp activities. SPJST Camp is located on 182 acres in Ledbetter that is full of wildlife, three ponds, and trails. The American Camping Association is quoted to have said that summer camp is a special place where you learn how to make a friend and how to be a friend . . . Kids come together from many different schools and communities and build brand new friendships that can last a lifetime because of the very special memories that they will share together in their camp community. If you have any questions, please contact State Youth Director Lynette Talasek at lynettet@spjst.com or 254-931-0639. Memorial Day - Monday, May 29 Memorial Day is a United States fed-
VĚSTNÍK
eral holiday that is celebrated every year on the final Monday of May. Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service. To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the National Moment of Remembrance resolution was passed in 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans to voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to “Taps.”
End of Summer Getaway! Good times await you at the Corpus Christi End of Summer Getaway. Start making your plans now to join us August 11 to 13 for a fun-filled weekend. We will be staying at Emerald Beach Hotel which is located right on the beach. There will be a lot of activities for the whole family. Additional details will be included in future newsletters and will be presented in the Vestnik as they become available.

Several ideas were suggested, but nothing was decided on. David Kerlin submitted his receipts for window repairs and gave quotes for the remaining window work. Brenna made a motion to accept the quotes and to proceed with repairs; Edward Stoll seconded. Members voted to go for-

Graduating seniors, remember the values your parents, grandparents, and the SPJST Youth Program have instilled in you and know that they help to define the person you are today. Believe in yourself and have the courage and conviction to stand up for what is right. Strive to do your best. Congratulations! I wish you much success with everything you do in life. I have been to several district spring

Many of our youth have taken the time to create a decorated rock and participate in the Decorated Rock Contest. It has been very exciting to me to see the entries and the creativity of each youth that has participated. Now that district spring meetings are all done, we are in full swing for camp and youth achievement days.

The Meaning of Memorial Day
The Memorial Day holiday got started on May 30, 1868, when Union General John A. Logan declared the day an occasion to decorate the graves of Civil War soldiers. Twenty years later, the name was changed to Memorial Day. On May 11, 1950, Congress passed a resolution requesting that the President issue a proclamation calling on Americans to observe each Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace and designating a period on that day when the people of the United States might unite in prayer. President Richard M. Nixon declared Memorial Day a federal holiday in 1971. Memorial Day is now observed on the last Monday of May. It is an occasion to honor the men and women who died in all wars.
Remembering Those Who Served
It is customary to mark Memorial Day by visiting graveyards and war monuments. One of the biggest Memorial Day traditions is for the President or Vice President to give a speech and lay a wreath on soldiers' graves in the largest national cemetery, Arlington National Cemetery, in Virginia. Most towns have local Memorial Day celebrations. Here are some ways you can honor the men and women who serve our country: - Put flags or flowers on the graves of men and women who served in wars. - Fly the U.S. flag at half-staff until noon. - Visit monuments dedicated to soldiers, sailors and marines. - Participate in a National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. local time. - March in a parade.
Now It’s Your Turn.

Richard Lesikar to display school photos this Friday, Saturday
Richard Lesikar will be at the Czech Heritage Museum this Friday, May 5, 2017, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Saturday, May 6, Jane (Lesikar) Williams and Richard Lesikar will be at Seaton Community Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Both days, they will have all the Bell County school photos on display and share names that they have received thus far. “We are looking for people to bring their school photos and also help identify those in the photos,” Richard says. Richard reports that he has received a some emails with information and identification for some of the photos that ave been published in the Vestnik. He is grateful for the assistance and looks forward to hearing from more people in an
effort to identify the photos and locate additional ones.
About the Project Czech researchers including Danny Leshikar and Robert Lesikar, Czech genealogists; Jane (Lesikar) Williams, director at Seaton School Museum; and Susan Chandler, museum administrator at the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center have accumulated approximately 90 photos of Czech schools that were in Bell County. These photos date back to the late 1880s through 1959 when Seaton School stopped taking group photos. Seaton was the last Czech school in Bell County and was consolidated into Rogers Schools in 1975. Bell County School Photos Needed Several of the photos we have scanned are in great condition; however, many photos were of poor quality, and we are seeking SPJST members/Věstník
readers to help by also allowing our team to scan their photos which will enable us to improve the quality of scanned photos for our master file.
Names Needed Second—and very important—some of the photos that SPJST members/Věstník readers have may include names written on the back of the original photos or on a secondary sheet. We presume that many of these school photos were handed down or inherited so it’s possible many folks have school photos and not be fully aware of how precious they are for our research project.
Recognize Anyone? Members/Readers who recognize anyone are asked to email rlesikar@icloud.com or send the information to Richard Lesikar, 702 Pintail Ct, Granbury Texas 76049-5564. —SPJST—
Let's start from one. Czech being an inflected language with a developed grammatical category of gender, there is more than one word to express the meaning of "one". One man is jeden muž, one woman is jedna žena and one child is jedno dítě. To make it even more complicated, a pair of scissors is jedny nůžky because, grammatically, it is a plural even though it is only one object. The word jeden or one can be used in the same sense as in English, as in the expression "one would expect....." - jeden by čekal..... . The neuter form jedno can be used on its own meaning one beer. Pojď na jedno means let's go for one. The expression Je mi to jedno means "it's all the same to me, I don't care either way." The name of the actual figure one is jednička, and it can be also used to mean "the best" as in "ty jsi jednička" - you're number one. A number one tram would also be jednička. The same word also means the best mark in school. Mít samé jedničky means to have straight A's. A similar word, jednotka, means unit.

The word jedináček means an only child. Jedinec is an individual and the adjective jedinečný means unique. All those words are derived from the same root. But just like in English, the ordinal number comes from a different root. The first is první, a word which is the same for all genders and numbers. That's all for our lesson number one první lekce. Until next time - na shledanou.
