P

resident Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country. On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force Days. The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense. This year, we recognize and celebrate our courageous, steadfast protectors for Armed Forces Day on Saturday, May 20.

Pick-Ups The 12th Annual SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration is in the books. What a successful event it was. The day was a perfect car show day with bright, sunny skies and temperatures in the lower 80s. A big thanks to all who sponsored, attended, and assisted with the event. Stay tuned to the Věstník for a summary and photos. As we were planning the show and looking over the classes, an interesting

question came up: Why are trucks called pick-ups? After some research, I learned that Ford, who made the first pick-up trucks, shipped them to dealers (likes Sears and Montgomery Ward) in crates. The new owners had to assemble the trucks using the crates as the beds of the trucks. And, the new owners had to go to the dealers to get them, thus they had to “pick-up” the trucks. Interesting trivia on “pick-up” trucks!

INVESTMENT REPORT Chief Financial Officer Mikeska brought up the quarterly report of investments and asked Buddie Ballard, CFA to present a report.

Mr. Ballard referred to a detailed report on our portfolio performance and explained the process of purchasing a bond from Street inventory for SPJST.

A policy is in place to closely monitor NAIC rating changes on all bonds when we receive notice from the NAIC AVS System. SPJST holds some downgraded bonds if there is good evidence their status will improve. A policy change will provide for an earlier exit strategy to sell bonds if they move below investment grade.

Consultant Ballard discussed the conference call with A.M. Best and the positive information reported about the SPJST portfolio. The report showed the portfolio provides good income; the portfolio has increased its overall bond ratings; the laddering of maturity of bonds provide steady payment to cover payout of our liabilities; and the fact it is structured well for an interest rate environment increase. Recess taken from 11:05 until 11:17 a.m.

Discussion continued about bonds on our watch list, and Chief Financial Officer said he will be transparent and provide full information on any such bonds. He reviewed a list of six bonds currently on our watch list since the energy sector downturn. The analysis of the bonds indicates that they are improving, and he recommended holding these bonds and monitoring closely. Chief Financial Officer Mikeska moved that we retain bonds currently on our watch list and monitor them for improvement with the understanding if there is adverse development we can take action. Director of Accounting/Information Technology Services Vajdak seconded the motion, and the motion passed unanimously. Discussion about the IPS and some beneficial changes were recommended.

Chief Financial Officer recommended and moved to amend page 11 of the IPS under Single Issuer Limitations to change 15 percent to 12.5 percent of surplus or 2MM dollars for new purchases going forward on any single issuer bond purchase. Director Rollwitz seconded the motion. The motion carried with 10 in favor and one opposed. Voting in favor; President Vanicek, Vice President Dixon, Chief Financial Officer Mikeska, Director of Accounting/Information Technology Services Vajdak, Director Victorick, Director Pospisil, Director Engelke, Director Rollwitz, Director Kaspar, and Director Bayer. Voting in opposition: Director Stavinoha. (This motion will reduce the amount of bonds we can hold from any one corporate entity).

Consultant Buddie Ballard stated in keeping with the Society’s cost cutting efforts, he wants to do his part and he would be decreasing his fee by 2 basis points. He noted due to the total growth and size of the SPJST portfolio, the figure is relative to the original agreement. Recess for lunch was taken from 12:30 until 1:05 p.m.

Lodge 15, Buckholts reports on May meeting

The meeting of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts was called to order at 4 p.m. by President Mary Rodriguez. We met in Temple at the William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Sandie Fischer followed by a moment of silence in memory of our departed members. It was so nice to have in attendance today our devoted member Lamerle Zajicek, project officer. She has been so helpful in securing the historical grants, which have helped us so much on repairs. We have enjoyed the beautiful, decorative painting on the front door. The treasurer gave her financial report, which was approved as read. Vice President Doug Williams spoke with the chief appraisal officer in

Cameron concerning the tax exemption and found out that as long as we don’t change our name or make any major change, we do not have to renew the contract. That is good news. We were notified by the Home Office that they had successfully filed our epostcard for the year 2016 to comply with the IRS Form 990. President Rodriguez stated that we need to rent a mail box for the mail is being delivered at different locations. Virginia made a motion that we rent a box, seconded by Sandie. Mowing is so expensive and has to be done so often this time of year. We could save a lot if we could do it ourselves. Doug made the motion that we check into buying a good used mower, seconded by Lamerle. The large outside air conditioner is giving us problems. President Rodriguez said she would have it checked out to see if it can be repaired or if it will have to be replaced.

You know the SPJST has a great youth program, summer camp, and other activities plus scholarships. Why not check into the great programs available. We had a great dance with the Red Ravens. They always give us good music and a great time for all. We had two little girls - Lisa and Lyla Mason who had never been at a live band dance. Their mom Jill could not get over how gracious everyone was to the girls. The only request we have is that children dance on the sides of the dance floor they are more easily spotted by adult dancers. Dancers can be tripped by the little dancers causing injury to both the children and adults. I know because it happened to us. To avoid running into a little girl, Johnny and I both fell receiving only minor bruises. We love to see families come have a good time together. Too many of us are too busy to enjoy our families. We are hoping that some of these acquaintances will seek additional information about us. Also, a big thank you to the folks in Vestnik-land that read about our project and ordered a shirt or hat so that they, too, can show off their support of all the police across the entire state of Texas. Lodge 191, Lufkin hosts dance lessons

SPJST Lodge 191, Lufkin and the Lufkin Dance Club partnered to give dance lessons every Thursday night in April. Almost 50 students signed up the first Thursday night, and a lot of them were homeschoolers Thanks to dance instructors Wheel and Debbie Crawford for taking the time to teach these lessons. They taught the two-step and all of the turns. Once you learn how to do all of the turns, you can put it with all of the other dances. At the April dance, there was a full table of homeschoolers who came out and practiced what they had learned. They were getting to be pretty good dancers. They will be ready for their prom which the SPJST lodge will host for them later on this month. Glenn Lenderman and Friends was the band for the April dance. Glenn always has a good show because he is also a good entertainer.

Marvin McDowell has been released from the hospital to stay at his daughter’s house in Huffman for a month. They should then be able to come home. He is still very weak, but he keeps getting better and better. Don’t you know they will both be so glad to get back to their own home and sleep in their own bed! Prayers are answered. Lodge 196 Houston-West hosts community Easter egg hunt

Saturday, April 8, 2017, was the date for the annual members and community Easter egg hunt, and it was a very fun time for all who attended. Things kicked off with lunch that had a “build your favorite hot dog” bar along with chips, cookies, and beverages. You should have seen some of the creations that were made! “Interesting” is just one word to describe some of them! This year’s theme was “who is SPJST.” To help in presenting all the things that we do at SPJST, we had several Home Office representatives set up tables to explain the fun events during the year. Lynette Talasek and her daughter Zoe showed off several of the things that the youth club has worked on and along with Frank Horak - they told people about the games, summer camps, Corpus Christi getaway, and many other fun times in SPJST. One of the really fun things that Lynette did at the table was the “finger print art.” She had the

child place copies of his/her fingerprints on paper in ways to form a bird, butterflies, trees, and many other great shapes. The kids loved it. I would have tried it, but my prints are too big for the small papers! I also want to say a special thank you to Zoe for helping with the coloring table mural. She helped draw several Easter-themed items that the children then colored, and she showed them how to draw eggs and other items that they could color. She did a very good job, and the children had big time fun. In addition to just telling everyone about all of the exciting things SPJST does, Melanie Zavodny and David came to the event and brought a wonderful slide presentation of pictures taken at many SPJST events from around the state. Pictures from summer camps at SPJST Education and Nature Center, Corpus Christi Getaways, and kolache

eating contests were of great interest. A big thank you to the SPJST Communication Department for working on this presentation. I also want to say thank you to Delisle Doherty for his help in explaining to everyone that in addition to providing all of the special things that SPJST does, our main focus is to make sure that our families are well protected from financial harm in the event of a death of a family member. The life insurance business that we have is the backbone of our company and allows for the other special things that we do, to be provided for. It is hard to talk to people about life insurance at a time of having fun, but Delisle does a great job of it. Thanks, Delisle, for a job well done. The day also saw a visit from Brian Shirley of the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire

Department and his side kick Sparky the Fire Dog. The two of them talked to children about fire safety and handed out fire helmets and window stickers to let firefighters know which rooms in the house have child in them. They brought some other firefighters and a ladder truck with them for the kids to see. The excitement really increased when the ladder company received a call and had to leave with the lights on and the siren blasting. The kids thought it was part of the show, but it was a real call. The Easter Bunny made his appearance and allowed everyone to meet with him and take plenty of pictures with the kids both young and old. The time then came for the Easter Bunny to lead the children out to hunt for the eggs. What a time this was! The kids all had their own way of getting the eggs . . . some ran and grabbed any and all they found

Mr. and Mrs. Dubcak Celebrate 50 Years

By Justin Everett Lodge 24, Cyclone

On Saturday, April 29, 2017, Mr. Julius Dubcak and Mrs. Jeannie Dubcak celebrated 50 wonderful years of wedded bliss at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. Even though the event was private, Mr. and Mrs. Dubcak were very pleased with the turnout of fine folks who showed up. Mr. and Mrs. Dubcak were married in 1967 and are two of the most kind people you will ever meet. Julius was the trumpet player with the Vrazels’ Polka Band for many years, and he always played beautifully. While giving his welcoming speech at the anniversary, Alfred Vrazel recalled that Julius played trumpet so beautifully and loudly, he never even needed a microphone. Julius’ gorgeous trumpet playing can be heard on many of the older Vrazels’ Polka Band recordings; some of them dating all the way back to 1965.

Julius and Jeannie also made sure everyone had a great time by providing delicious food and great music by Jerry Haisler and the Melody Five. Jerry and the guys played great and made sure everybody was entertained. The very first song the Melody Five played was dedicated to Mr. and Mrs. Dubcak. Julius and Jeannie danced to this song as all of their friends and family circled around them and held hands. The highlight of Mr. and Mrs. Dubcak’s anniversary celebration had to be when Julius Dubcak, David Trojacek, Alfred Vrazel, and Albert Heselmeyer all joined together on stage to play a few Vrazels’ Polka Band favorites. Everyone in attendance was mesmerized by this Vrazels’ Polka Band reunion. Julius, Alfred, David, and Albert did a great job of recreating some of that old Vrazels’ Polka Band magic. If you missed this Vrazels’ Polka Band reunion, don’t worry; they always play together at the annual Marak Picnic every summer. After the Vrazels’ finished playing, I sang and played my accordion with The Melody Five and guest Ed Kopecky. I was not able to play my squeezebox as well as my grandfather, Anton Vrazel (who was unable to attend), but I think I got the job done. A fun time was had by all on April 29, and I wish Mr. and Mrs. Dubcak many more happy years of matrimony. —SPJST—

Ennis Sewing Circle

Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, April 13, 2017, in the Sokol Club Room. President Irene, Ann, Martha, Dorothy, and Pat arrived early to set up Dorothy Prachyl’s quilt, which is a very pretty one. We also had a new guest Sandy Pochobradsky, who had never seen how a quilt is stretched. We hope she enjoyed herself and comes again next month. Thank you to all the ladies who came early to quilt. There were quilters all around. By lunchtime, we had 13 members and guest Sandy Pochobradsky. President Irene led everyone in grace, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. Thank you to the ladies who set up and cleaned up everything. President Irene called the meeting to order; the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all; and a moment of silence was held for James Royce Ware, Tony Liska, and JoAnne Zmolik Macalik. The “Our Father” was recited for the above and all our sick members. Secretary Ann read the minutes of our last meeting, and Treasurer Doloris

Sunshine Lady Dorothy had a birthday card to sign for Ella Mae Zmolek. We hope she has many more birthdays. April was also the birthday month for Joyce Ehrenberger. We all miss you. Quilt scheduler Pat Fowler announced that for May, we will quilt for Ann; June - Dorothy Kudrna; August Christmas quilt; September - Maggie Holy; October - Junior Sokol traveling fund quilt; and in November, we’ll make lap quilts. Members, keep these in mind as we will need all your help. President Irene announced the Gun Barrel Annual Quilt Show on April 28 to 29 in Gun Barrel and asked if anyone would be interested in going. Several were interested. Ann and Irene plan to attend. President Irene showed her baby quilt which is a tumbling blocks pattern and quilted in the bishop fan design. As always, she did a beautiful job. She also told about a new marking pen called Frixion marker. We have a possible date for our quilt show next year - March 11, 2018. Irene asked for everyone to be thinking how many quilts they will be showing. This will require much work and planning, and we want all to take part. Keep this in mind. Dorothy Prachyl was our 50-50 dollar winner. I can’t remember if this was

her first time or not. A motion was made by Pat Fowler to adjourn, and it was seconded by Ginny Svehlak. The next meeting will be Thursday, May 11. We will quilt for Ann, have a meeting and lunch, and the 50-50 dollar game. We hope to see everyone. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth

The Easter Bunny made a pitstop at the lodge for the Ladies Circle meeting in April. He left behind a huge nest of eggs and prizes for everyone. President Cathy Simmank and her bunny helpers prepared a fun-filled Easter egg hunt for the ladies. Each member present got a list of colored eggs to find, special personalized eggs, and all of them were filled with candy and some were filled with prize notes. Bunny’s prizes included packages of cookies, decorated cupcakes, bunny pencils and erasers, a plant, garden decorations, and dimes for playing bingo. Standing back and watching, I just got the biggest kick out of how childlike everyone was. They were scurrying about, grabbing eggs, and opening them looking for prizes, and laughing and giggling at their treasures. We have to give Cathy huge kudos for the work she put into this annual

event. It was so fun and so unique. President Cathy opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance, and Janet Basham read a poem by Helen Steiner Rice entitled “Springtime.” She also suggested several movies that the ladies should go see. One was Zookeepers Wife, Jerusalem, and another regarding the case for Christ (I didn’t get the name). Secretary Joan read the minutes which were approved as read. Margaret Laymance gave the financial statement, and due to Marlene Bass’ fall we did not have a report from her. However, these are the names of our members who were unable to be with us due to health issues—Marlene Bass (stroke, fall, and broken collarbone), Evelyn Scaff (broken foot and sore throat), Pauline Morbitzer (back issues), Theretta Praslicka (husband’s health), Mary Ann Adcock (visit to hospital with leg issues), Brenda Lackey’s mother-in-law died, and Lorinda Manasco and Hermina Cihacek (health issues). We were missing so many of our regulars, and we pray that they all are recovering and well on their way to good health again. Good news from Betty Loyd was that Chelsey Davidson is now teaching, and our little Charlie is in school as is little brother Oliver, and Margaret Laymance’s daughter is moving back to Texas after living in California for many years. Alene Kercho’s son, Mark (age 57) ran a 13.3 mile race up Pike’s Peak. He ran it in less than four hours all the way to the top. Unbelievable! A big wow for him. It’s great to hear good family

Two Graves Side by Side By d.knape

Two graves side by side, 2 brothers, both children caught in the influenza epidemic of the early 1900s. The influenza infected them and they never recovered. There was no remedy.

each grave, recount each life as best remembered, recite a prayer. Our Father, Hail Mary.

Toward the end of our walk, we come to these two graves, visited last because it is so sad. Our family’s youth cut down before they reached their prime. Before they realized their potential as men. What would they have become if given the chance. in America everyone has a chance, why not these? Now only these two headstones mark their memory. The writing blurred by the elements and the passing of time. We can barely read their names. How long before these too are erased. How long before no one is left to remember.

A peace substituted for the sadness of their abbreviated lives.

They never had a chance to be the men we wanted them to be. —SPJST—

Lodge 180, Burleson says, “Happy Birthday, Verna!”

Their graves appear so small. Symbols of the brevity of their lives. We only know their names and not their faces. There were no photos taken then.

All we have left are these final resting places and the family’s tale of who they were. Yet there is not much known of how they were as boys. What they were like and what their personalities were. We only know them by their graves. In parting, may they rest in peace.

Happy birthday to Verna Mason! She was honored and recognized at the Lodge 180, Burleson social on May 9, 2017, at Red Lobster. —Submitted by Nancy Kelly President/Reporter

her master’s degree from Southwest Texas State University — both in elementary education. Her teaching career spans 36 years, including stints in Victoria, Luling, Palacios,Woodsboro, and for the last 30 years in Wharton ISD. Together, David and Janie have combined their gifts in many varied and creative ways. As we share and celebrate our Czech heritage — or for that part our multi-cultural heritage — it’s great to preserve old buildings, books, and documents. It’s also a wonderful thing to preserve old cemeteries — one of the most personal parts of that our cultural and personal identities. These cemeteries are hallowed ground. We wouldn’t be here without these folks so its only fitting that we maintain them as a way to honor those who are interred there. David and Janie were instrumental in the organization of the SPJST District Six Cemetery Association some 15 years ago. The objective has been and continues to be the routine maintenance of the three SPJST cemeteries located in District Six, including Moravia, Velehrad, and Shiner. This has been no small task in that the ravages of time had taken their toll on these plots. The Velehrad site — in particular — was a challenge in that Mother Nature had done a good job of concealing the monuments from public view. In time — and with a little help from their friends and fellow committee members — all three projects were looking good — and continue to provide a place that memorializes the lives of our Czech forefathers. Janie was especially instrumental in doing the historical research which eventually led to all three cemeteries receiving Texas State Historical markers. Many of you, I know, have been engaged in this process. You know that the most important section of the historical TOCA President Kevin Kana, left, and SPJST President Brian Vanicek, right, present the award to David and Janie Bucek of Lodge 151, Wharton.

SPJST members from other Czech organizations also received TOCA awards. Pictured, left to right are Lodge 81, Needville member Glenn McDonald of Czech Heritage Society of Fort Bend County; Lodge 24, Cyclone member Arnold Pechal of Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center; Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy member Charlene Hurta of Texas Czech Genealogical Society; and Lodge 172, Pasadena member Reverend Paul Chovanec of Texans of Czech Ancestry. marker application is the narrative history which documents the significance of the property. Janie did this three times, compiling complete, orderly, concise and fully documented histories with endnotes and footnotes. With regards to the Shiner and Velehrad cemeteries, that included identifying several individuals buried and unmarked graves. Not surprising, Janie is an avid genealogist — a passion that goes back to when she was just a little girl. To date, she has traced her and David’s ancestors from Moravia, Bohemia, and Silesia. She and David have also — and continue — to work with other people on constructing their own family histories. In complementary fashion, David Bucek was closely involved in the restoration of the old SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad hall, which too had succumbed to the ravages of time. That building — I am happy to say — will be moved here to the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, later in 2017, as an important addition to the turn of 19th century Texas Czech village. Both David and Janie are longtime active members of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton with David currently serving

as president and Janie serving as secretary and fraternal activities coordinator. SPJST District Six Director Karen Kaspar had several superlatives to define the Buceks, including “dedicated,” “devoted,” and “very deserving of this honor.” Indeed, when Director Kaspar says, “We are so blessed to have David and Janie,” she speaks for all of us at SPJST who have had the opportunity to work with David and Janie. Additionally, the Buceks have also been active in the Wharton County Czech Heritage Society with David currently serving as first vice president of the organization. David also currently serves on the board of trustees on the state Czech Heritage Society of Texas. In addition to their work preserving, promoting, and celebrating Czech heritage, both David and Janie are active volunteers within their community.

Both are active in Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton. David’s skills as a craftsman include his involvement with the restoration of the Wharton County Courthouse and the Southern Pacific Railroad Deport and Park, where he also volunteers. David isn’t finished yet. He is currently working to restore the 1889 Wharton County Jail building which he purchased in 2001. Janie, too, is involved in the Catholic Daughters of America Court 1990 and the Texas and Wharton County Retired Teachers Association. On the homefront, David and Janie have two daughters; two sons; and nine granddaughters. And I have absolutely no doubt that they are all very proud to have you as their loving parents and grandparents! —SPJST—
