“No Smoking” benefits

My husband and I smoked for 35 years. Then we quit for 19 years. When we stopped smoking, I decided to save the price of two packs of cigarettes each day. In 1995, the price was about $2 a pack. So each day, I put away $4 for our two packs of cigarettes. When I saved for one month, I placed it in a savings account - “The No Smoking Account” at a bank across town. (It would be harder to make a withdraw.) During 30-day months, the savings was $120, and during 31-day months $124. Of course, February varies from $112 to $116. I started putting the actual $4 a day into a container. After about six months, I began to write a check at the first of each month to myself. You can choose to smoke or to save. The savings account grew, and we could see the real benefits of not smoking — plus, the health benefits. You can use this idea also, for soft drinks, Starbucks, or anything - pay yourself! The benefit showed up the first month, and each year, you save approximately $1,500. Several people have asked, “Did you give yourself a raise? The price of cigarettes is about $4 or $5 a pack.” The answer is no. I could not afford it now! It has been 19 years, $29,000 in savings—and better health! In conclusion, if you smoke - quit! And if you are young, think about the money saved if you don’t start to smoke and will be in better health. Girls, smoking also make creases in your mouth and makes deep wrinkles in your face. By the way, last year we bought a “smoking” brand new, red Ford Mustang convertible for $30,000! Now, we are saving for medical bills! Lodge 20, Granger continues hall updates

At 7 p.m. on Monday, April 10, 2017, President Bridget Bohac called the meeting to order and led the Pledge of Allegiance and the Lord’s Prayer, which was said for deceased member Albert Vrana. Secretary Jvonne Elwood called roll; Vice President Doris Bell and Youth Leader Emilie Tischler were absent. Jvonne then read the minutes from the January meeting. Brenna moved to accept the minutes as read. Gilbert Bohac seconded and members voted to accept. Jvonne read correspondence which was a tax-exempt notice. Bridget shared with us the letter she received stating Albert Vrana passed away. Brenna gave the financial report for both February and March. In February, there were $1,443.38 in expenses and $3,717.28 in rentals. The incentive

check was also deposited this month. February’s balance was $7,640.74. For March, we spent $686.01 and took in $1,100 in rentals. March’s balance was $8,054.73.

Bridget reported on fraternal activities. She shared information with us on membership referrals. State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Horak was in attendance to award Lifetime Achiever plaques; unfortunately those members were absent from the meeting. Frank shared with us some of the upcoming events, and he told us about the membership referral card drawing in which winners receive Walmart gift cards. We discussed what our lodge would like to do for this year’s Join Hands Day. Last year, members collected rice and beans for the local food pantry. Several ideas were suggested, but nothing was decided on. David Kerlin submitted his receipts for window repairs and gave quotes for remaining window work. Brenna made a motion to accept quotes and proceed with repairs; Edward Stoll seconded. Members voted to move forward. David also reported that he got a quote from Kruse Electric for the installation of new wire for new window units. Jvonne moved to accept the quote, Brenna seconded, and members voted to proceed. Gilbert informed us that he requested a quote for waterproofing existing window units. Edward suggested having the exterior walls seal coated. David then made some suggestions for making the hall more aesthetically pleasing and suggested having a fundraiser. Frank shared various ideas for fundraisers that other lodges have been successful with. Gilbert recommended trying to sell tickets for a chili supper in the winter. Jvonne made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Ed seconded, and members concurred. After the meeting was adjourned, a drawing took place for door prizes pro-

Lamar Lewis, left, from Academy Santa Sharing group presents a certificate of appreciation for Lodge 177, Academy’s support to President Otis Beck.

Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, May 11, 2017, in the Sokol Club Room. President Irene and Ann Clagett arrived at 8 a.m. and others started arriving soon after. They stretched Ann’s really pretty quilt, and when I arrived, they were ready to start quilting. Thank you, all, who came early to quilt. By lunchtime, we had 17 members and two guests. Longtime member Mildred Trlica was brought by her daughter and son-in-law. Mildred now lives in Carrollton close to them. It was so good to see Mildred. She looked great. I hope they bring her again. At noontime, President Irene said

After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order, the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for John George Matous, Mildred Adamcik, Kenneth Trojacek, and Robert Bohanon. The “Our Father” was recited for the above and our sick members. Secretary Ann read the minutes of the last meeting, and Treasurer Dolores gave her report. Both were approved as read. Ginny Svehlak read a thank you note from Mildred Trlica’s family for remembering Mildred on Christmas. She also read articles from the mouth of babes that we all enjoyed. Sunshine Lady Dorothy Prachyl read a beautiful article on “God Made My Wonderful Mother.” Dorothy also announced May birthday celebrants - Ella Mae Zmolek, Lorane Marusak, Ginny Svehlak, Ann Clagett, and Dorothy Prachyl. “Happy Birthday” was sung to the above. We all signed a sympathy card to the family of one of our members who passed away - Mildred Adamcik. It was discussed that we will quilt lap quilts in November for our shut-in members. Please, ladies, start getting your tops ready. Thank you went out to Libbie Vrla for bringing plates, tea, and paper towels for the kitchen. President Irene started discussing the

President Irene and Ann attended the quilt show in Gun Barrel. They enjoyed it, but said most of the quilts were machine-quilted with only about 10 that were hand-quilted. At our show, we will have all hand-quilted quilts. President Irene announced a quilt show on October 20 and 21 at Canton Civic Center. If we are interested, we should get together and go. It sounds like fun. President Irene’s tip of the day was how to correctly put borders on a quilt. Dorothy Kudrna reminded everyone about the Senior Fitness Day at Sokol on May 31. We hope all can come. It is free, and we will serve lunch. We always have a great time. Thank you goes out to Henrietta Milan for all the items she donated for our prize drawing in July. We appreciate it all. Georgia Holy was the 50-50 dollar winner. We are happy for you. President Irene thanked all for coming, for quilting, the food, and the set-up and clean-up. The next meeting will be Thursday, June 8. We will quilt for Dorothy Kudrna. So quilters, please come. We need you all. It was good to see everyone. Stay well, and hope to see you June 8. Senior Car-Fit By Georgia Fitzhugh SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis Caregiver-Aid.com

Senior Drivers Need a Good Car-Fit You try on shoes and clothes to make sure they fit. You don’t like to wear shoes that pinch, pants that are too long, or shirts that are too tight. But, did you know that your car needs to fit you, too? It certainly does, and this is especially true for the elderly. They need a good senior car-fit. There’s an educational program for senior drivers to help you and your car fit together for safer driving. It’s called CarFit, and the program is offered at events in various communities throughout the United States. The purpose is to increase the safety of older drivers by making sure their cars are properly adjusted to fit their physical needs. The senior Car-Fit program was developed by AAA, AARP, and the American Occupational Therapy Association. Generally, senior drivers are safer drivers because they are more likely to drive at safe speeds and avoid risky behaviors. However, seniors can be seriously hurt in a car accident because of their more vulnerable physical conditions. The Car-Fit program helps seniors check how they fit physically in their car and helps them to learn to adjust their car’s safety features to fit their needs. At a CarFit event, technicians and health professionals work with each driver to cover a checklist of items to evaluate the fit. The evaluation takes about 20 minutes, and the results are written and confidential.

13

The trained Car-Fit team will look at how the driver is positioned in the car seat, and make certain that the height and tilt of the seat is the adjusted correctly for comfort and range of motion. The distance of the driver from the steering wheel is important because of the impact of an air bag in an accident. There should be at least 10 inches between the airbag, which is in the center of a steering wheel, and the chest of the driver. The team will see if the driver can easily reach the brake and gas pedals when properly seated. The team will see if the senior driver can turn his head to check for a visual blind spot, or if he needs a panoramic rear-view mirror to make that important visual check. Does the driver know where the head restraint should be placed, and how to adjust it? The team will make recommendations if adjustments or adaptive equipment is needed. Most adaptive products of this kind are available as after-market parts at auto supply stores. The senior car-fit program is free and for all senior drivers. To see if there’s an event near you, go to the website, https://www.car-fit.org/carfit/RegisterCarFit. This spring and summer, there are several Car-Fit events in central Texas. Get your car fitted just for you and for safer driving. Georgia Fitzhugh and her husband have been caregivers for elderly relatives. She and her husband Greg own CaregiverAid.com, an online company, which provides equipment and advice for caregivers and patients. They are both members of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis. —SPJST—

World War II Veteran Raymond Holub of Lodge 172, Pasadena earns Bronze Star for Service By Ashley Tompkins

The Vindicator Newspaper Liberty, Texas

Reprinted with permission.

Raymond Holub had never given much thought to being a paratrooper, but when the option presented itself during his service in World War II, his hand was the first to go up. “I didn’t know diddly squat, but I said it had to be better than serving in a tank,” said Holub, a United States Army Veteran. “I didn’t like the tanks. When they close up the tanks, you only have two slits about 12 inches long and about three inches tall. You couldn’t see anything.” Holub who now resides in Highlands, but spent 35 years in Liberty, didn’t begin his service in the United States Army as a paratrooper. In November 1941, a month before the attack on Pearl Harbor, Holub joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the CCC in 1933 as the Emergency Conservation Work agency. Holub earned $30 per month and sent $25 of that back home for his family. While the usual CCC commitment was three years, Holub was in the corps for just eight months before he was discharged in 1942 when Congress voted to do away with the CCC. He returned home to Pleak and began working at Dow Chemical in

Freeport. Less than nine months later, he was drafted on April 22, 1943. After completing basic training at what is now Fort Hood, Holub was assigned to a tank destroyer battalion. With no options to transfer out General George S. Patton had lost too many men in the Battle of the Bulge Holub’s unit was sent as reinforcements in late 1944. After a stop in North Carolina for processing, Holub volunteered to become a paratrooper. “There were about 80 of us who volunteered,” Holub said. He attended jump school at Fort Benning, Georgia, in early 1945 and soon after that, he and his fellow paratroopers were sent to Fort Mead, Maryland, and were assigned to the 17th Airborne Division in the European theater. Holub boarded a cargo ship carrying 880 soldiers and crew traveling from the New York Harbor to Europe. “We were in the Atlantic getting close to the Azores Islands when two German submarines got into the convoy and shot several ships. They shot one French carrier and sent it out of control. It broadsided us. It was 4 a.m.,” Holub recalled. “Ten feet and a few seconds later, that thing would have split down the middle of us.” The chaplain and men closed the watertight doors between the second and third holds as about three feet of water poured in.

LEFT: Raymond Holub is shown in his MP uniform after he was assigned to protect General Dwight Eisenhower.

“There were two other hands pushing on the door,” Holub said. “Then we pumped the water out and kept what was left of our ship afloat.” Three hundred eighty men died in the crash. It was 14 days until five destroyers arrived from England to pick up the surviving soldiers and take them to the Azores Islands, where they stayed for another 14 days. “They took us to England and put us on trucks and took us to the English Channel and France. We got about halfway into the channel when the ship blew an engine. We had to be towed back to England,” Holub said. “We couldn’t get across at first because of the German submarines going back and forth. We finally got across, though.” Once across the English Channel, Holub traveled to England then Le Havre, France, then to Belgium. Holub was discharged on April 30, 1946, but remained in the U.S. Army Reserves. He was called back into active duty in September 1950 - this time for the Korean War. He earned a Bronze Star for his service in World War II. Holub didn’t see action overseas during the Korean War, but stayed stateside at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, serving a year before returning to Liberty. When he returned home, he worked for Texas Gulf Sulphur for 35 years. Raymond is a member of SPJST Lodge 172, Pasadena. —SPJST—

Charlene Hurta

Continued from Page 1.

In 1999, while serving as the genealogy liaison for the Czech Heritage Society, Charlene coordinated a multi-day genealogy event for their annual meeting in Brazos County. After many people expressed appreciation for helping with their family research, Charlene’s passion for Czech genealogy and helping others discover their family roots grew. This experience led to the founding of Texas Czech Genealogical Society, the organization that became known as “the premier Czech genealogy resource in Texas.” Texas Czech Genealogical Society was formed by 10 Texas Czechs on February 9, 2001. Charlene was a cofounder and valuable member of the group. She served as president of TCGS for 13 of its first 15 years, and her knowledge, guidance, leadership, and determination has been a leading force for its success. Not only did Charlene serve as president, she planned the programs for each event, developed the themes, and created the table decorations and programs. She contacted and booked a majority of the speakers and, with Leroy’s assistance, built props and decorations and transported necessary items to and from each venue. Under Charlene’s leadership, TCGS accomplished much. Its first quarterly publication, Cesky Stopy, was published only a few months after TCGS was formed. For about 13 years, she was the editor and a main contributor to this very successful quarterly magazine, which won second place for Genealogical Society Quarterly at the Texas State Genealogical Society’s annual event in 2012. In 2005, Charlene was the initiator and major force in publishing Czech Family Histories Volumes I and II. After it was published, articles continued to pour in, resulting in Czech Family Histories III and IV, which were published in 2007. Over the years, 21 books have been published by TCGS, with Charlene Hurta carrying the major responsibility of each publication. Texas State Genealogical Society has recognized TCGS by bestowing its highest awards in each category for three TCGS books: 1) the two-volume publication Early Czech Schools, 2) Czechs in Uniform Volume III, and 3) Lee County Czechs, written by TCGS Chaplain Reverend John Gantt. Charlene was also editor and writer of the monthly newsletter, Ceske Ozna-

VĚSTNÍK

meni. Charlene planned a Czech Veterans Tribute entitled “Let Freedom Ring” for TCGS’ annual meeting in January 2010. Leroy built a display wall, and members were invited to submit photos and other memorabilia of Czech veterans. Information on more than 500 Czech Veterans was received and displayed at that meeting. The veterans who attended the event were quite moved by the display. Photos continued to arrive, and the wall doubled in size for our second event, “This Parade’s for You,” in 2012. The Czech Veterans’ Wall of Honor now resides in a permanent location at the SPJST Home Office in Temple, Texas, and it continues to expand. After moving the Wall of Honor to the SPJST Home Office, TCGS began receiving donations of various military items from members and friends, resulting in the establishment of the Czech Veterans’ Museum, which is situated alongside the Czech Veterans’ Wall of Honor in Temple. This endeavor, too, was led and overseen by Charlene. While it would seem that more than 24 hours a day would be needed by anyone to fulfill all the jobs that Charlene Hurta has accomplished, she has also participated in other volunteer positions. As a member of many genealogical societies at the county, state, and national level, she has been a speaker on a number of occasions and has staffed booths promoting Texas Czech Genealogical Society and family research. Charlene has served as secretary to Coastal Confetti Clown Alley, where she supports Leroy “Malinky” (sometimes “Tiny”) as his sidekick, “Glitter”. They have performed at a number of events, including one event in the Czech Republic. Charlene assists this association by designing their newsletters and handling publicity. Charlene and Leroy participate in multiple fundraisers for several schools and other non-profit organizations yearly. One organization

that is dear to their hearts is BACH, a non-profit organization for physically and/or mentally handicapped children up to the age of five. This organization is top priority in the Hurta family, and their participation can always be counted on by the children at the center. Leroy (“Tiny”) has developed a bond with many of the children, and they remember him and recognize him at every event. Through membership in Coastal Confetti Clown Alley, many lasting friendships have developed, leading to their becoming the transportation for anyone needing help in getting to doctors’ appointments or to cancer treatments in the Houston area. Charlene and Leroy consider it a tremendous privilege and blessing to supply this assistance to the needy. During the three years that her mom resided in a nursing home, Charlene published a monthly newsletter for the residents, which they immensely enjoyed. She has been writing since high school days when she won first place for her newsletters, club publicity, and workbook that she submitted for the Distributive Education Club competition. Charlene has also served as secretary at First Baptist Church in Clute, publishing its Sunday bulletins and membership mailouts. It is amazing that Charlene accomplished so many remarkable achievements for TCGS and other organizations while battling cancer on four different occasions, beating it each time with the help of modern medicine and her remarkable faith. She is currently in remission and for that Charlene gives “all honor and glory to our Lord Jesus Christ.” For all the reasons listed herein, we, the board and directors and officers of TCGS, believe that Charlene is a most deserving person to receive the TOCA award for 2017. —SPJST—

Hello and welcome to Czech by Numbers, Radio Prague’s own Czech language series which explores Czech numbers and numerals and their use in idioms. We’ll be looking at the number three - tři. As you can hear, the common Indo-European origin of the English and Czech here is quite obvious. The form of the word stays the same in all three genders but it, of course, changes according to cases. But, luckily, declension is not on our agenda.

Trinity. The Holy Trinity is Svatá Trojice. The adjective trojitý means triple as in a triple axel - trojitý axel, a jump in figure skating. Triplets are trojčata, one triplet being trojče. The ordinal number - third is třetí, as in třetí lekce - lesson number three. One third is třetina. A third-grader is třeťák. And the saying do třetice všeho dobrého means third time lucky. And finally, there a tongue twister for you. In translation it means “333 silver sprinklers were spraying over 333 silver roofs.” Tři sta třicet tři stříbrných stříkaček stříkalo přes tři sta třicet tři stříbrných střech. Happy practicing and until next time, na shledanou - good bye!

Learn Czech at home this fall

The word for the number three - trojka is also quite a bad mark in school. It can also mean room number three in a hotel, a number-three tram, or even a canine tooth. In the plural - trojky - the word means C-cup breasts. It is an old fashioned system which has now been replaced by a European numbering system. It is not to be confused with a similar word trojice - a group of three, a trio or

Oznámil další program Stříbrňanky a hlavně koupání v Galvestonu, Tx, což je obyčejně vrcholem pobytu každé kapely a zájezdu lidí z Mora vy.

Nově upravená website stránka umoňuje zájemcům získat informace o naší nadaci a činnosti katedry českého jazyka a literatury na Texaské universitě v Austinu, Tx.

—SPJST—

Hanus family visits Czech Heritage Museum By Susan Chandler Administrator Czech Heritage Museum

Members of the Hanus family met at the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, located at 119 West French Avenue in Temple, recently to research their family history in our genealogy library. Sisters and brother Joyce Hanus Lamprecht, Barb Hanus, and James Hanus drove up from Austin and Cibolo, Texas. They are originally from Skidmore. The siblings were able to find new information about their family in our library and also a copy of a book dedicated to their family history. Their father’s cousin, Otto Hanus, was the first librarian, archivist, and curator of the

Museum so we were delighted to meet them! Otto Hanus is one of the pillars of the history of the Czech Heritage Museum. His first involvement was to transport 1,500 Otto Hanus books from storage in West, Texas, to the SPJST building at Second Street and Central Avenue in Temple. The books, sent by donors from across several states, were the result of discussions between several Czech fraternal organizations in Texas who agreed that a museum, or at least a library of Czech literature, should be established. Nick Morris, editor of SPJST’s weekly newspaper Věstník, took on the challenge and started the book collection. Interested donors sent them from all over Texas and several other states and before long, the large collection had accumulated. The following year, 1969, Hanus became the curator and administer of the collection.

Morris wrote of Mr. Hanus’ work in A History of the SPJST: A Texas Chronicle 1897-1980. “He does not know what a clock is, and the SPJST could not have a more devoted worker. He, on the other hand, extends credit to all others who donated items . . . and to the cooperation and understanding of the Supreme Lodge.” Today, visitors from around the world and Texans of Czech ancestry alike enjoy the legacy left by Mr. Hanus here at the Czech Heritage Museum. —SPJST—
