These women sometimes took entirely new jobs replacing the male workers who were in the military. Thanks to each and every person who has submitted a response through the mail, email, fax, or online at spjst.org. If you have not responded, please take a look at the back page of this week’s Věstník. If you enjoy receiving the Věstník and wish to continue receiving it, please let us know so that we will continue to send it to you. And, let us know if you would like to receive the Věstník by mail, email, or both. We must hear from you by July 15. If we do not hear from you, your name will be dropped from the Věstník mailing list. Please take a moment and respond today. We occasionally send out these surveys to make sure that the Věstník is being received by members who do indeed wish to receive it each week. And, if you have already responded - thank you. There is no need to respond again! The Publication Committee is asking members to lend a helping hand to fellow members who are homebound or in retirement centers and assisted living facilities that may not have the ability to respond to the survey on the back page. If you know someone who cannot respond but
wishes to continue receiving the Věstník, please reach out and help them so that their Věstník subscription does not stop. Please contact me if you have questions.

Member shares thanks
Dear SPJST, I am absolutely honored to have received the SPJST freshman scholarship. I am extremely appreciative and cannot thank you enough. This money will
truly help me further my education and make my many dreams come true. Currently, I am struggling to find money to pay for college. My parents have said they will only pay for half which leaves me with over $50,000. Therefore, when I learned that I received this scholarship; I was full of excitement and joy. This couldn’t have come at a better time! This money is truly so needed and will do so much good. This scholarship will help me achieve one of my lifelong goals: attending college. I can use this money to get a business degree at Texas Tech University. I plan on getting my master’s after I achieve my bachelor’s. While at Tech, I will work my hardest in every class and strive for nothing but the best. I want to make SPJST proud for choosing me as a 2017 scholarship winner, and I fully intend to. Once again, I cannot thank you enough for seeing the potential in me. I have no doubt that this scholarship will do wonders in my life. Ashley Brook Leopold Lodge 4, Hallettsville —SPJST—

State FAC shares June fraternal updates
Reserve Your Room Now for the End of Summer Getaway Good times wait for you at the 11th Annual Corpus Christi Getaway. Make plans now to join us on August 11 to 13, 2017, for a fun-filled weekend. Last year, approximately 368 men, women, boys, and girls from across the state came out to enjoy the weekend fraternal celebration. As in years past, SPJST rooms have been blocked at Emerald Beach Hotel in Corpus Christi. Please make every effort to reserve your rooms early. There are 150 rooms set aside for the event. Make your reservations by calling the hotel at 361-883-5731 and refer to group code “SPJ” to assure proper room rates. If you have any problems or concerns while making your reservation, please ask to speak with Mary Alice. The 2017 celebration kicks off with the Friday night aloha party. Saturday’s events will include sand sculpting, horseshoes, 42 dominos, bunco, and an evening safari party. Additional details will be included in future newsletters and will be presented in the Věstník as they become available. 2018 State Tournaments During the April Supreme Lodge meeting, the decision was made to keep all state tournaments - Progressive 42 domino, tarok, straight domino, and 42 domino - at the SPJST Home Office in Temple for 2018. The attendance was up significantly from the 2017 competitions. For more information on our state tournaments, please contact me at 254534-0681or frankh@spjst.com or Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez at 800-727-7578, 254-7731575, or tammym@spjst.com.
Flag Day—June 14 The week of June 14 is designated as National Flag Week. During National Flag Week, the President will issue a proclamation urging United States citizens to fly the American flag for the duration of that week. In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened that day by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. In August
1949, an Act of Congress established National Flag Day. Please take a few moments on this day to pause and recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag; and we encourage you to talk to your children, grandchildren, and friends about what the flag means to you. It’s important to remember that so many others have given their lives to secure our freedom so please participate in this national observance. Your lodge may want to join with a veterans organization in your community and be part of the celebration. This would count as a service project/community outreach.
SPJST Weekend Retreat Great news! During the April Supreme Lodge meeting, it was unanimously approved to have an adult’s weekend retreat in 2017 at the SPJST Camp. Plans are in the works for the retreat to be September 22 to 24. ENC Camp Director Jeb Lapeyrolerie and I will be working on coordinating activities. We are planning some unique elements for this weekend retreat. Make sure to check your Věstník for updates on the adult camp program and my monthly newsletter.
Observe Father’s Day – Sunday, June 18 A big driving force behind the establishment of the integration of Father’s Day was Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd, born in Creston, Washington. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, as a single parent raised his six children in Spokane, Washington. Mrs. Dodd initially suggested June 5, the anniversary of her father’s death to celebrate Father’s Day. She did not provide the organizers with enough time to make arrangements, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. The first June Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. Unofficial support from such figures as William Jennings Bryan was immediate and widespread. President Woodrow Wilson was personally feted by his family in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge recommended it as a national holiday to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June. The holiday was not officially recognized until 1972, during the presidency of Richard Nixon. Therefore, Father’s Day was born as a token of love and gratitude that a daughter cherishes from her beloved father. Roses are the flowers for Father’s Day – red to be worn for a living father and white if the father has passed away.

On the Haskovec property was my (Ann’s) first home, and where my sister Evelyn Mach and brother Ivan Haskovec were born.” A very generous donation was included which was designated to pay for outdoor lighting. Thank you, Ann! We welcomed new member Rose Dlabaj. Sales agent is Tom Droste. Rose is a familiar face at our lodge. She and husband Ronnie, who is a longstanding member, have volunteered countless hours for various fundraisers and projects. She has been a wonderful asset to our lodge, as a guest. Now, we are very excited to welcome her as an official member of our organization. Welcome, Rose! Under old business, there was discussion about the ongoing renovation projects. The parking lot, west light project is complete thanks to the generous donation in memory of the Frank and Mil-
dred Haskovec family. The upper portion of dancehall and dining room walls have been resurfaced with a new fire resistant covering. This project was led by Betty with the assistance of Ernie Martinek. With much delight, it was announced that this project came in ahead of schedule and under budget. Great job! In honor of Join Hands Day on May 6, after the completion of several renovation projects, the hall needed a good spring cleaning. Several lodge members and youth gathered to make the hall sparkle and shine. Many thanks to Linda and Chad Jurik; Marie and Cody Nelson; Lisa, Pierce and Preston Sullivan; Jennifer, April, and Misty Dvorak; Ray Elleven; Pat and Van Fowler; Scooter and Rita Holland; Laure Krajca; Betty Macalik; and Adell Rejcek. Kay Lynn received yard memorials at the District Three Spring Meeting to honor local members who passed away within the past year. These memorials will be distributed to the families of de-
ceased members. There was some discussion on new renovation projects. Officers recommended restoring the flag pole and replacing the light with bright new LED lighting. Doing so, we will be able to proudly fly the American flag around the clock. By unanimous decision, it was decided that this is a very worthy project. However, due to potential unforeseen costs, it was decided that we get two to three detailed bids before moving forward with the flag pole project. It was also announced that we have received a very generous donation which is designated to renovating the front entrance. With approval from the members, it was decided to permanently remove the trophies, trophy case, and the memorabilia within, from the front entrance. These will be put on display in another designated place. Work on the front entrance project will begin soon. She also read a letter from West ISD, thanking the lodge for its $100 donation for the students of West ISD. The FAC report was given by Linda Kaluza. She stated that tomorrow (March 4) was a straight domino tournament, and on April 1 is a 42 domino tournament, both in Temple. The Home Office will have Join Hands Day designated for May 6 if anyone would like to participate, and the SPJST Car Show at Seaton Star Hall will also be on the same day. Terry made a motion that the report be approved as read, and Ronnie Kaluza seconded. Motion passed. Freddie mentioned we did a project last year for Join Hands Day at West Rest Haven, and Linda Kaluza added it was for Mother’s Day. Freddie Kaluza said he would talk to Janice to see if we could get another project together. The treasurer’s report was given by Mary Lou Mynar. She then read a letter and memo about the enhanced premium refund and how it is formulated. Freddie said that the annual earned premium you have gets 2.8 percent. The more premium-paying members we have, the more the lodge gets. He said this formula was changed from four or five years ago which he feels is better than the old system. Freddie asked Director Engelke how does our membership stand in the lodge. We have a total of 908 policies totaling $15.33 million. Freddie asked for questions on the treasurer’s report. Terry Sefcik made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report, and Ronnie Kaluza seconded the motion. Motion passed. Freddie asked Czech Reporter Jan Vaculik if he had anything to report. He said no, but that March is the most beautiful month because it was when he was born. This made for a great moment in our meeting, and Freddie said no wonder it is special!

Freddie asked Wilburn if he had anything to report on, and he did not. Freddie said we had no new members to vote on. John said they are looking at new products and may be repricing some of the other ones.
300-Plus Attend Christmas Party In old business, the Christmas party went very well. We signed in around 290 people plus 30 dancers. John said that besides Lodge 88, Lodge 54 had the biggest turnout for the Christmas party. Freddie said it was started in 1992 when the Home Office started the incentive program on new members/policies coming into the lodge. It was decided by the officers to use this money to give back to the members by starting the Christmas party, and it has continued on through the years.
West Benevolence Fund Freddie gave an update as to what funds were distributed so far by the West Benevolence Fund Committee. They gave Sokol $3,937 for mats; $6,000 to the History of West Museum for electrical work and air conditioning inside the building; West Rest Haven received
$11,400 for stained glass, chairs, and the gazebo; $12,182.18 to West Volunteer Ambulance for a cart to use at football games; $13,300 to the Parker project; and $10,000 to Sokol for building of the gym. This is a total contribution of $56,519.18. Freddie asked if we noticed an article in The West News about the memorial they are trying to set up right across the street from the park for the Fallen Heroes. Janice is on the committee, and they were looking at the Benevolence Fund to give a donation to this project which will have granite monuments and a waterfall with an eternal flame in the center. Freddie wanted the lodge’s input if we think that is a good thing to give to. Wilburn stated that everyone in the community would benefit from it. Mary Lou asked if he knew how much the project is going to cost. Freddie said they are getting bids, and several people have donated items. An article will be put in the Věstník to encourage lodges to donate to this project. Ronnie Kaluza asked how much money we are thinking about donating, and Freddie stated the Benevolence Fund was looking at $10,000. Mary Lou Mynar stated with us having so many

members, family, and others we lost during that time and ones who survived, our lodge should consider a donation for that because it’s a good remembrance for your loved one. Freddie reminded the members that we always said at the end of the year, we would give a donation to a worthy project. John stated he will bring it up for discussion at the District Three Spring Meeting. He will ask if the district wishes to make a donation. If any lodge wants to donate, he said he may do a matching donation out of his director’s discretionary fund or set a goal where they can match him. Freddie said from what he understands, Janice told him that Joe Pustejovsky is the chairman of this committee and they already have $100,000. He said it looked like the cost will be between $200,000 and $250,000. Freddie asked again as being a member on the West Benevolence Fund Committee for approval if the membership was in favor of contributing at least $10,000 from the West Benevolence Fund for this worthy project. Freddie read a letter from the City of West asking for donations to help with the project. Freddie asked who had birthdays since our last meeting. Wilburn’s was February 1, Ronnie’s was January 8, Jon Vaculik’s was December 20, and Mary Lou’s was today.
Next Meeting—June 2 The next meeting will be Friday, June 2 at 7 p.m. for our 50- and 75-year pin presentations. Members decided to have Bush’s Chicken for dinner. Work on Fallen Heroes Memorial begins in West; donations sought to fund project
Editor’s Note: Thanks to Lodge 54, West Secretary and Sales Agent Janice Kaluza for sharing this article from Larry Knapek that originally appeared in “The West News.” Sister Kaluza is serving on the committee for the Fallen Heroes Memorial. She says that the West Benevolence Fund Committee is considering a donation to fund the granite markers. More money will need to be raised to fund the memorial. If you or your lodge would like to donate to the Memorial, please mail your check to Fallen Heroes Memorial in care of West, Texas Foundation, 210 North Roberts, West, Texas 76691.
Work began Monday, April 17, 2017, on the memorial for those who lost their lives in the April 17, 2013, West Fertilizer plant explosion in the city. Associated Concrete workers began moving dirt for the city’s Fallen Heroes Memorial exactly four years after the explosion which took the lives of 15 people. “It’s exciting to see some dirt move,” Joe Pustejovsky, a coordinator for the memorial project, said. “We’ve been talking about this for about three and a half months and now, we got a start.” The West Council gave its approval in February for preliminary plans for the memorial and just recently gave its okay to go ahead with the project. West Mayor Tommy Muska had previously appointed a committee to gather information and present a preliminary plan for this memorial to be located across Stillmeadow Drive from the West City Park, on property currently owned by the city. The memorial plans call for 15 individual concrete memorials inside the main memorial with black marble plates for those who lost their lives in the explosion. Twelve of those individual memorials will have First Responder bronze helmets on them. The preliminary plans also call for a

15 foot long wall describing the explosion and a bench, along with galvanized steel planters. Also currently planned are a water feature (pool) with an eternal flame and a walkway. Numerous trees are also planned as part of the landscaping for this area. Both the U.S. and Texas flags, along with West Fire Department and West EMS flags, are to be along the description wall. Pustejovsky said the completion date for this memorial is currently set for late this summer. “If it gets done before that, it would be great.” Current plans are to begin with the water feature and eternal flame and continue from there. Pustejovsky added that several contractors are stepping up to volunteer work on the memorial project. “We’ve had a lot of contractors say they would help in different ways. Even some individuals in the community are volunteering their help. We’ve had a lot of interest in the project and in helping.” Mayor Muska said he believes the memorial project should be something that is affordable and maintainable for the city. “This will be something long term so we need to make sure our city workers will be able to maintain it.” “I love the concept,” he continued while Mayor Pro-Tem Steve Vanek added that he liked the “idea of an eternal flame” in the memorial plans. It was discussed at a March meeting that there was approximately $90,000 currently available for the project which would not cover the cost of the project. Vanek said a car show was planned for Memorial Day Weekend in West and proceeds from this event were to aid the memorial at West City Park. “It looks like it is going well, and we hope to do it again next year.” The project coordinator is excited about its start. “I think it will be very, very nice,” he concluded. —SPJST—

Rudolph Darilek Memorial Scholarship presented to Lodge 88, Houston Member
Through the generosity and love of his family and friends, one of this year’s Lodge 88, Houston scholarships was funded entirely by donations given in the name of Rudolph Darilek who was a longtime member of Lodge 88. Rudy loved his Texas A&M Aggies, and it was the wish of his family to give a scholarship in his name to an Aggie freshman - this year being Abigail Alise Hegwood. Rudy’s daughter Margie Darilek Nowak presented the certificate to Abigail. When daughter Rose was told who the recipient was, she commented
that Rudy would be proud! These families share many memories “of the good ol’ days” at Lodge 88, and there were lots of hugs and smiles and stories told on Monday evening, May 15, 2017, when the scholarship was presented. Thank you, Darilek family and friends, for supporting the education of our future generation by donating to Lodge 88’s scholarship fund. Fort Worth Friendship Club
Fort Worth Friendship Club met Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at the new St. Thomas Parish Hall. The meeting was called to order by Vice President Lola Taylor in the absence of President Barbara Becknell. Barbara was unable to attend due to a teaching assignment. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all. Lois Smith’s daughter Lisa was our guest. Glad to have you, Lisa! All were welcomed. Secretary Mary Ann Krivanek read the minutes from the previous meeting, and Treasurer Margaret Sears gave the financial report. Both reports were approved as presented. It was a fun day and meeting as everyone was asked to decorate and wear a hat in honor of Mother’s Day. We did have some clever hats - mostly hats decorated with flowers - and all were absolutely beautiful. Winners were a hat with a parrot on top by Laurie Dawson and a hat worn by Alma Feil made of seed packages for the brim and sides with a pot of green plants stuck on top. Both were very clever. I don’t recall who won first or second, but each did get a small live plant in a pot. Since I am the reporter, I wore a large brim straw hat bought in Mexico many, many years ago with some bluebonnets on the side with a small note tablet and pen on the side. I have to admit . . . it was rather plain compared to some of the others. Anyway, it was fun! Sunshine person Darlene Thompkins reported she did not mail any cards this month. Our prayers and thoughts go to new member and friend to Rose Ann Judy de Grandchamp, who has been in the hospital and is now at Heartland Nursing Home. Margaret Laymance was the winner of the door prize, and Margaret Hoenig was the winner of the first 50/50 dollar game. Marie Keller was the winner of the second dollar game. It is always nice to be a winner. Congratulations! A discussion was held on location as to where we would go out to eat in July for our “dining out” social. Everyone was asked for suggestions to be brought to our June meeting. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to May celebrants - Laurie Dawson, Alma Feil, and Agnes Saldana. May all of you have many more. Hostesses for June will be Sharron Connelly and Anna Marie Moncrief. Mary Ann Krivanek suggested that she will bring two pans of chicken and spaghetti for the June luncheon, and all are asked to bring a dish to complement the chicken/spaghetti casserole. There
will be no fried chicken for June. Hostesses for the month - Pat McWilliams, Alma Feil, and Margaret Hoenig - were thanked for doing a great job. Thanks also to the one who picked up the fried chicken this month and thanks to Lola and Rose Ann for the table decorations of various color straw hats with flowers. Very nice! The next meeting will be Wednesday, June 7. We hope to see all of you then.

I’ve learned there are six-inch by two-inch white blazes marking the trail painted on trees, rocks, trails, etc. Supposedly when you see a blaze, the next one is about 70 feet ahead, and you can see it, too. There is a total of 165,000 white blazes marking the trail going both ways. Of course, you have to watch your steps all along and still keep your eye on the white blaze. If there is

Lodge 180, Burleson convened for a special meeting on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, for the purpose of drawing a winner of the big Yeti Tundra Cooler. Police Officer David Wardlaw consented to come join us to do the honors of pulling the lucky person’s name. We had so many tickets that our small container was not able to hold all of them and give them some breathing room. A big paper sack was then furnished to hold the tickets so that they could be shaken and stirred around. This shaking took about three minutes as we really wanted them all to mix. Officer Wardlaw reached in and after a minute or so, he pulled out a ticket. He
looked at the name and had a perplexed look on his face. I asked, “David, what is wrong?” He said, “This is Tiffany, and she is my partner.” I could not believe that such an event had taken place. I said that if it was a policeperson, that he/she must have purchased the ticket from me as I had spent about five hours there on Wednesday, April 5 selling hats and shirts. I checked my list, and sure

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth
Due to being under the weather, I understand I missed a very enjoyable meeting. President Cathy stopped by earlier this week with notes so I’ll try and relay to our readers and friends what took place on Tuesday, May 9, 2017. Because this is the month that we remember and honor our mothers, the ladies were asked to bring pictures and memorabilia to the meeting. Some brought pictures that were taken on their mom’s wedding day, and Theresa Clay even brought her mom’s wedding dress from long ago. Lorinda Manasco shared a picture of her mom along with her seven siblings. Her mom was one “tough cookie” and raised the children all alone. Lydia Alholm brought a picture and told many stories about her mom. Evelyn Scaff shared that she is one of 10 children that her mother raised. That had to have been really hard for them. As for me personally, I was happy to be a mom of two terrific boys. I am certain that we as mothers are thankful God blessed us so beautifully. President Cathy once again came through with a novel idea to celebrate the day. She made Mothers’ Day cards for everyone. Each member took a card, and those that drew a numbered card also won a small vase holding a bouquet of fresh flowers. How thoughtful and creative is our president: she makes our meetings most enjoyable. Next month we celebrate our dads so again we are asking for pictures or stories. Business took place as it always does, with the minutes and financial reports being given and approved. Hostesses Betty Loyd, Janice Record, Ann Cooksey, Carolyn Belew, and Lisa Juran were thanked for the great lunch. President Cathy stated that there was an abundance of food so thank you to the members as well. Youngsters Sunny Kercho and Doris Overstreet were honored with the birthday song and being first in line to get lunch. Oldest member Hermina Cihacek (104) was unable to be with us to celebrate, and we miss her sweet face and hugs. We’re really hoping she will come back soon. The remainder of the meeting included the calling of names for door prizes and a really cute story about Forrest Gump trying to get into heaven. He was asked three questions and one of them was “What is God’s first name?” He replied, “Andy. And he walks with me. And he talks with me, etc.” After the laughter died down, the blessing for lunch was said, and bingo followed lunch.
Hopefully, this will give you an idea of why our monthly meetings are so special, and we invite any lady interested to attend. We love just being together and visiting: it’s a do nothing type of day for all of us. Talk and eat! Also, my thanks to Cathy Simmank for filling in for me, Respectfully submitted, Joan Simek Shropshire Secretary —SPJST—

Dear Vestnik, This year, the Jourdanton FFA Land Judging Team advanced to the national competition, which was held in Oklahoma. I am proud to say I was a part of that team! Our team consisted of four people - three seniors and one sophomore . . . me! For our eight-hour drive, we took a school Suburban in which we played the alphabet game and became closer to people who we usually don’t see that much. In Oklahoma, we didn’t spend all of our time judging land, but we made sure to add in a little fun with putt-putt golf, the Cowboy Hall of Fame, and a national point of interest - the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial. I had never been to Oklahoma so it was interesting to see how different everything was—even though we were

Another way of saying four is čtvero, as in the phrase čtvero ročních období The Four Seasons - like the collection of violin concertos by Antonio Vivaldi. Staying with music, čtverylka is the quadrille. One quarter is čtvrtina. Just as in English, a quarter in Czech means a district of a town, only a slightly different form of the word is used - čtvrť. This form is also used in telling the time. If you want to say ‘It’s quarter past one’ in Czech you say je čtvrt na dvě, literally

Lesson “4”
The name of the figure is čtyřka. The word also means a very bad mark in school, a premolar tooth, a fourth gear in a car, or a number four tram. A similar sounding word is čtyřčata - quadruplets, one quadruplet being čtyřče. A group of four is čtveřice. Not to be confused with čtverec - a square, as in a polygon with four equal sides and equal angles. That again should not be confused with čtverák - a prankster, a tease. Why this meaning is related to the number four is a bit of mystery to me. (Etymologists say the word used to mean an impostor, originally a ‘connoisseur of the four arts’). On the other hand, čtvernožec is a quadruped, a word usually applied to dogs.

Learn to play the fujara and koncovka this summer
Hello, Věstník Readers. I am writing to you because we are all members of large Czech and Slovak communities. I have fallen in love with the unique voice of the Slovak fujara and koncovka flutes, and for the past 17 years, I have been on a mission to bring that music to the USA. Besides performing at numerous places and festivals, I have been teaching both fujara and koncovka since 2013 at a five-day course which is part of the music and art program every July at McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland. This course is not available anywhere else in the country or even the whole American continent. In the past, I had students coming for the class from as far as Wisconsin and Florida, but there have been only two students of Czech or Slovak origins from this area!
The problem is, that our community is split into small groups who often do not communicate much with each other. Would you help me, please? This year, I need to fill a minimum of six students in the beginner class (no knowledge or experience with any music instrument is necessary), and I still have four openings. My students love the class, and everybody plays both instruments. Later in the week, you can decide to concentrate on either fujara or koncovka, or both. Everybody can play simple melodies at the end. For the past two years, my students were with me on stage at a Friday night closing concert. There is no other instrument that is so easy to play with so few side holes (fujara has only three and koncovka has none)! You only need to blow into it

with a different levels of breath. Both instruments are also great for intuitive playing, just sitting or standing on a quiet evening and just playing a couple tones and making your own music. Or, you can learn easy Slovak or Czech melodies and play for your family or friends. In Slovakia or Czech Republic, both instruments are played mostly by males, but in the USA, it is just opposite - more than half of my students are females, and even in Slovakia, that is changing now. All ages are welcome; if you can breathe, you can play. Here’s an article and video about my last year’s class: http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/news/westminster/ph -cc-overtone-flute-20160708story.html

F U J A R A [ foo-ya-ra ] “Fujara” is a rare folk musical instrument from Slovakia, with a very unique voice. Many say they will never forget hearing the fujara for the first time! It is a very large (up to six feet high) fipple overtone flute with three side holes and a parallel smaller tube, which supplies air to the top of the flute. Cherished in the seclusion of the Slovakian mountains by shepherds, the fujara was preserved over the centuries. Until recently, the fujara was not known outside of Slovakia, where only a small number of tra-
ditional musicians play the instrument, and a handful of craftsmen can make one. Today, people all over the world are discovering the beauty and unique qualities of the fujara, and there is a growing number of fujara players in Europe and the United States. Fujara can play in two diatonic octaves with harmonic overtones and undertones - almost fully chromatic scale in several keys, and more tones in the third octave, when its normally soft haunting voice would change into shrill high overtones called “scatter,” common at the beginning of a typical Slovak folk song. Both tubes of the instrument are traditionally hand-drilled from the trunks of Elder trees (Sambucus nigra), or other hardwoods, and usually are

richly decorated. Traditional fujara melodies are in a slow tempo (often in Mixolydian mode), and the lyrics consist of folk-poetry about the hard daily life of shepherds, love, the beauty of nature, and about forest outlaws. Most current Slovak fujara players preserve the traditional fujara music while other musicians of the world are discovering the fujara and finding many new ways to play this magnificent instrument. “Koncovka” (“overtone flute”) is a shorter flute, also called “end flute,” because it doesn’t have any side holes, and the technique of playing involves closing and opening the end of the flute with a finger, its range is 1.5 octaves in Lydian mode. It is also a perfect instrument for intuitive playing and for jamming blues.
