Interstate 35 Polka Party

When life hands you lemons, you make lemonade. But when life hands you a traffic jam on Interstate 35 – in the middle of a construction zone – you entertain! And, that’s exactly what Ray Koncar of Joliet, Illinois, did. At 6 a.m. on Wednesday, May 31, Ray and his wife, Annette, began their 16-hour trek back home to Joliet after visiting their daughter Margaret, who lives in the Austin area. “We were a little over an hour into the trip when we came to a stop in Temple,” Ray said from his home in Joliet on Thursday morning.

“With 15 more hours of traveling ahead of us, I decided to turn the engine off and get out of the car.” Ray talked to a few other stranded motorists around him including a truck with four gentlemen who were concerned about being late to work. “It was a quarter to 8, and they were supposed to be at work at 7:30. They were worried.” He thinks that many of the travelers were on their way to work, and many were communicating with their employers about being late. “I could tell it wasn’t going to be ‘just a little late’ either.” The situation was stressful, to say the least. “It was a beautiful day outside, and no one wanted to sit in a two-hour traffic jam,” Ray remarked. “My band had a gig Continued on Page 4.

hat a small world we live in! An unidentified polka-playing gentleman who brought joy to many in a stressful situation was the talk of the local and state news last week. He was on the television news, featured on the cover of Temple Daily Telegram, and appeared all over the Internet! But, no one knew his name. I decided to try to seek his identity and capture his story because I was looking for a Czech connection. Our post on Facebook was shared many times and reached a lot of people. What a surprise to discover that one of my Facebook friends from another fraternal - KSKJ Life in Joliet, Illinois - actually knows him, plus his daughter is an intern at KSKJ! Thanks to April Sleyko for solving the mystery. I had the pleasure of meeting April and her KSKJ teammates at an American Fraternal Alliance conference last year.

I enjoyed visiting with the “unidentified accordion man.” Instead of a direct Czech connection, I found Ray Koncar of Joliet, Illinois, who loves to polka, is involved in his fraternal organization, and loves his Slovenian culture. It’s a story that has a fraternal connection and a heritage connection along with a message of spreading joy to others and making the best out of a bad situation. Thanks to Ray and his wife Annette for sharing their special story. It appears on page 1. I-35 Polka Party

—SPJST—

Continued from Page 1.

scheduled for Friday night, and I didn’t really have an opportunity to practice while visiting in Texas – and I didn’t want to get rusty!” So, with the I-35 traffic at a standstill, he decided to take out his button box accordion that he purchased on one of his visits to Slovenia, where Ray’s ancestors are from. He played polkas. He played waltzes. He played all kinds of music for the wary, waiting travelers. And, their reactions . . . “People didn’t mind listening to the music. Most people found it entertaining,” he said. “My wife got out and danced, and other people danced, too.” Ray has been playing the accordion since he was 25 years old. He is a part of the band “Ray Koncar and the Boys.” They began playing polkas, waltzes, pop standards, country, and rock at picnics, dances, fundraisers, Oktoberfests, and parties eight years ago. Band members

include Ray on the button box accordion and vocals and his sons Rob on clarinet, sax, and vocals; Frank on guitar and vocals, and John on drums. Occasionally, daughter Amy joins in on piano and daughter Margaret on flute. “And, Annette holds us all together,” Ray says as he proudly credits his wife! Some travelers took photos of Ray playing his accordion among the stranded cars and semi-trucks along the I-35 construction mess in Temple. The photos then started showing up on social media. What an interesting photo, I thought – and what a way to kick off June as National Accordion Awareness Month! I shared the photo on our SPJST Facebook and Twitter pages along with a story by Temple Daily Telegram staff writer Deborah McKeon describing an unidentified man (Ray) as “a traveling troubadour.” The article and photo later ran on the front page of the June 1 Telegram with the headlines “Interstate 35 traffic troubadour” and “Musical motorist plays polka while stuck in traffic.” Numerous other news outlets around the state also reported on the “unidentified” traveling troubadour.

Ray Koncar & The Boys! Ray, center is pictured with son John, left, who is the drummer, and son Frank, who is the guitarist.

Ray Koncar and his family are pictured at a May Fest in Kentucky checking out the polka band! Left to right are sons Frank and Rob, wife Annette, daughter Margaret, Ray, son John, and daughter Amy.

I decided to take it a step further and attempt to seek his identity in order to get his story because I thought there might be a possible Czech connection. I posted the photo of “the unidentified man” playing his accordion amid the I-35 traffic jam asking readers to help identify him. I knew it was a long shot, but anything is possible if you try – especially with social media! Through Wednesday afternoon and evening, the posts reached close to 40,000 people and were shared more than 200 times – across Texas and across the nation. On Wednesday morning, April Sleyko, who is one of my Facebook friends, reached out. April is an employee of KSKJ Life, which – like SPJST – is a fraternal benefit society in Joliet, Illinois. April and I met last year in Florida at an American Fraternal Alliance conference. She posted, “He’s one of our members! He’s a member of KSKJ Life from Joliet, Illinois. He and his family were visiting his daughter in Austin. A very talented man.” Another interesting note – Ray’s daughter Amy is an intern at KSKJ Life! So, boom . . . just like that . . . I was on the phone with Ray getting his story. The power of social media really is incredible! The first question I asked Ray: “Do you know that you are famous in Texas this morning and that you touched many people’s lives yesterday?” Nope, he hadn’t realize it yet! “It was a stressful situation, but what I did wasn’t a big deal,” he said. “I wanted to try to make things better. Plus, it was another place to play the accordion – an opportunity to make people happy!” The story seemed to touch many fans on SPJST’s Facebook page: Ruth Hanusch – I don’t know him, but he was doing God’s work. God bless you, sir.

Euwyn Pegues – Some people just know how to make the best of every situation. Kat McGrew – Only in Texas. Gladys Spoerle – Neat. I wish I could have been there! Johnny Smith – Sounds like a good time, considering the circumstances. Karen Collie – Bless his sweet accordion playing heart! Karin Bryant – That’s the kind of attitude we need! Dennis Foerster – Wow, I worked for TxDot for 35 years. I have seen lots of things but never that. Nancy Machu – Definitely the way to make a bunch of lives happier! Ray and Annette reported that the rest of the trip was uneventful – other than a semi-truck that almost ran them off the road. “But that was nothing that an accordion could fix,” Ray laughed. Ray says he’d be up for playing a gig when he comes through the Temple area again one day! We joked about pivo and vino—two words that I learned mean the same in Slovenian and Czech! Oh, and we did find a Czech connection! Annette’s great-grandmother was born in Slovakia when the country was still Czechoslovakia, and Annette’s father who was born in Slovenia was able to communicate with her so the languages do have some similarities! Ray and his accordion helped many people deal with a not-so-pleasant situation on Interstate 35 on Wednesday morning. “These situations happen, and all you can do is make the best of it,” Ray said. “I tried to make the best of a bad situation by sharing music with everyone.” The next time you are in a stressful situation . . . remember Ray. Life handed him lemons, but he didn’t settle for making lemonade. He made a festive, jovial scene for many to enjoy at the lemonade stand! —SPJST—

On Saturday, May 6, 2017, the 12th Annual SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration was held at Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. If you are a polka music fan, a true Texan, or anyone of any age, the SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration was surely the place you needed to be on May 6. There was plenty of fun, food, and activities going on while Texas hospitality stayed in full effect. There were lots of activities for the little ones as well, but the one activity the children seemed to enjoy the most was the kiddie train ride. When I saw how much fun the kids were having getting pulled by that riding mower while sitting in their boxcars, I was very tempted to take a ride myself . . . but I

think I am a little too big to fit in the boxcar; it must be all of those kolaches I have been eating. Ha ha! Speaking of kolaches, there was also a kolache eating contest held, and I am sure all of the contestants had fun racing to finish those Czech sweet treats. Entertainment was definitely something that was provided beautifully, thanks to The Praha Brothers Band. The guys made sure to keep Czech heritage and culture alive by playing many lovely polka and waltz tunes. I loved the group of young people who performed a traditional Czech dance under the pavilion. The young people brought a taste of the Czech Republic to the Lone Star State as they were clad in their beautiful Czech costumes.

Now, we get to the best part of it all—the automobiles. I saw many beautiful classic and newer rides, and I am sure all of the car fanatics felt like they were in automotive heaven. Since there were so many breath-taking automobiles, I am sure everyone had a rough time voting for which one was their favorite for people’s choice. Everything the people of SPJST offer was in full effect at the event. Friendship, humbleness, compassion, and kindness are just a few of those many things SPJST offers. A big thanks to everyone who attended and helped with the event. If you did not attend, you missed out. But don’t worry, there is always next year. —SPJST—

We extend sincere thanks and appreciation to all of the 2017 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration sponsors, participants, and volunteers. A total of 220 of the most awesome vehicles in the Central Texas area were displayed at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall on Saturday, May 6. It was a perfect day with lots of sun, and temperatures were in the low 80s. The hall and event grounds were filled with hundreds and hundreds of spectators. The attendance throughout the day was estimated at 4,000 to 5,000 people. The Czech Heritage Celebration included several folklife demonstrations hosted by the Czech Heritage Museum. These included sauerkraut making, noodlemaking, cordage making, and lace making. The Praha Bros. entertained for everyone’s listening and dancing pleasure. Vendors, kolache eating contest, silent auction, and District Two Beseda Dancers were also part of the afternoon of fun.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club hosted the Kids’ Zone. Activities included an art car, bounce house, and train rides; newspaper craft by Bell County Master Gardeners; dig pit and craft by Bell County Museum; family tree by the Czech Heritage Museum; face painting and spinning wheel by Temple Parks and Rec; and Lightening McQueen and Tow Mater. A special thank you to our sponsors listed on page 15 for their generous contributions. Thanks to the businesses and individuals who donated items for the silent auction and bucket drawings. Registration will be from 1 to 2 p.m. This retreat will give LITs the opportunity to acquire some great skills. This year, we will be welcoming back teambuilder Mike Spiller. He will be introducing you all to some new ice breakers and fun camp songs. On top of having a great time getting to know each other, LITs will also learn what their responsibilities are at camp all while having some fun with their peers! All new LITs must attend this event in order to be eligible to assist with their district’s summer camping season. LITs will also assist their youth leaders with their youth clubs throughout the year. Please know that district youth camp and other activities that LITs help out with throughout the year can also be counted towards accumulating volunteer hours.

Flag Day: A Tribute to the Red, White and Blue

People across the United States celebrate Flag Day on June 14 each year to honor the United States flag. Coincidentally, the United States Army celebrates its birthday on that same day. Flag Day takes place during National Flag Week, a week designated for Americans to reflect on the freedoms that we know and love in the United States. Many people in the United States honor this day by displaying the American flag in front of their homes and public buildings. Other popular ways of observing this holiday include: flag-raising ceremonies, Flag Day services, school quizzes, musical tributes and essay competitions about the American flag. On Flag Day, June 14, 1923,The American Legion and representatives of 68 other patriotic, fraternal, civic and military organizations met in Washington, DC for the purpose of drafting a code of flag etiquette. The 77th Congress adoped the codes on June 22, 1942.

According to the American Legion, the top four flag myths are as follows: 1. The Flag Code provides penalties for violations of any of its provisions. False - The Flag Code is simply a guideline for proper flag etiquette. The law does not provide penalties for violation of any of its prvisions. 2. The Flag Code prohibits the washing or dry-cleaning of the flag. False - There are no provisions of the Flag Code, which prohibit the washing or dry-cleaning of the flag. The decison to wash or dry-clean would depend on the type of material. 3. You must destroy the flag when it touches the ground False- As long as the flag remains suitable for display, the flag may continue to be displayed as a symbol or our treat country. 4. A flag that has been used to cover a casket cannot be used for any other proper display purpose. False - A flag that has been used to cover a casket can be used for any proper display purpose to include displaying this flag from a staff or flagpole.

Thank you to Gail Koontz of Bell County Master Gardeners and her team for making newspaper hats with the kids. Thank you to Kayte Ricketts with Bell County Museum for bringing her team with the dinosaur dig pit and tissue paper car craft.

What a fantastic car show presented by the SPJST Home Office! It was such a great turnout and such a great way to get the name out about SPJST. Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club joined with the Home Office for a Join Hands Day project by providing lots of activities for kids at the car show. A bounce house and train ride were managed by the youth club. Thank you, Donnie Pechal, for the use of your riding lawn mower.

Dear Věstník, We had our District Seven workshop and outing at the Transportation Museum in San Antonio, Texas. I had never heard of the place, but they had some old vehicles, fire trucks, and buggies, which they used in the older days. They also had trains that you could go through and look at all the different compartments. One of the trains - you could even ride on as well! Now, I’m looking forward to this summer. Fraternally, Katlyn Polasek —SPJST—

Thank you to Belinda Garcia with City of Temple Parks and Recreation Department for sending two of her team members to provide games for the kids and sharing information about all their summer programs.

We plan to make next year’s Kids’ Zone even bigger and better . . . so save the date — Saturday, May 5, 2018, and plan to join us at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton for the 13th Annual SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration! Fraternally, Amber Bartek, Youth Leader —SPJST—
