Lodge 24, Cyclone sets upcoming dances
Lodge 24, Cyclone met Monday, June 12, 2017, amid oceans of corn that will yield heavily this year. It is too late for storage bins to rescue from low prices. The milo and the cotton look good, too. President Wilde called the meeting to order at 7:25 p.m. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a silent prayer for our deceased and for the men and women in our armed forces. Margaret Mikeska read the minutes of the last meeting, and they were accepted as read. Linda Wilde gave the long treasurer’s report covering the Mother’s Day barbecue and the hall repairs by Amos Electric. We served 917 plates for our Mother’s Day Barbecue Lunch. Mark Maddux gave the bar report, and Brenda Maddux gave the FAC report with the Corpus Christi Weekend on August 11 to 13. All games will be at the Home Office again this year, and an adult retreat will be held at the ENC on September 22 to 24. Father’s Day is June 18. Richard Green is our new member, and he will be a sales agent, too. Thank you, Richard. Check with the Vestnik about your Vestnik and calendar. Under old business, Becky and the Ivanhoe Dutchmen cancelled out on the battle dance; however, the Red Ravens will play for the February 18 date. They are strong enough to play their own. Old piano will be done away with, and old sofa, chairs, and coffee table is to go, too. If you are interested, call the hall phone and leave a message. Author Robert L. Uzzel of Lodge 6, Cottonwood presents In the Durhams of Fairfield: An African American Genealogy to SPJST Library
In The Durhams of Fairfield: An African American Genealogy, Robert L. Uzzel traced his wife Debra’s roots to the slaves of the family of Robert Winfield Durham. Evidence indicates that Gobi, the patriarch of the Durham family, along with his wife Mary and five older sons, were slaves in Fairfield County, South Carolina, and that Gobi died there. Mary gave birth to their youngest son, Isaac Durham, in 1860 near Fairfield, Texas, where their five older sons (who came with their masters to Desoto Parish, Louisiana) had settled by 1870. The six Durham brothers - Belton, Allen, Minor, Christopher, Anderson, and Isaac - lived east of Fairfield in the Butler community of Freestone County. Some of the descendants of these brothers still farm land in Butler, where Durham is a common surname. Debra Uzzel is a sixth generation descendant of Allen Durham. The author has conducted research in Fairfield County, South Carolina, and DeSoto Parish, Louisiana, as well as Freestone County, Texas. He received much help from Eddie Marie Jones Durham, the wife of Bobby Jean Durham, a fifth-generation descendant of Allen Durham. He concurs with Eddie’s words in her book Mama, “Babe” and Me: “It is either ironic or intentional that being born in the Fairfield District of South Carolina that Allen brought his family to the area of Fairfield, Texas!” The Durhams of Fairfield continue to make their mark. They are now scattered throughout the United States, involved in many businesses and professions and contributing much to their communities and to the world as a whole. There can be no doubt that members of this outstanding family to whom the author is related by marriage will always make their mark. It is his prayer that this book will inspire the present generation and generations to come to do all they can to preserve the Durham legacy.
About Dr. Uzzel Robert L. Uzzel was born on May 22, 1951, in Waco, Texas. He graduated from Waco High School in 1969 and received an Associate of Arts degree from McLennan Community Col-
lege in 1971. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Religion and Sociology in 1973, a Master of Arts in Church-State Studies in 1976, and a Ph.D. in World Religions in 1995 from Baylor University. He received a postdoctoral Master of Arts in Political Science at the University of Texas at Arlington in 2008. He was ordained an itinerant deacon in 1975 and an itinerant elder in 1977 by Rt. Rev. John Hurst Adams, the 87th Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. He has served as pastor of Texas AME congregations in Dallas, Fort Worth, Kaufman, Blooming Grove, and Maypearl. He has served as pastor of Wayman Chapel AME Church in Ennis since November 2002. He has taught a wide variety of courses in religion, history, and political science at Paul Quinn College, Cedar Valley College, Mountain View College, Tarrant County College, Temple College, Navarro College, and Hill College. An active Prince Hall Freemason since 1981, he holds Certificates of Literature from both the Philalethes Society and the Phylaxis Society. He is a Fellow of the Phylaxis Society, a member of this society’s Harry A. Williamson Hall of Fame, a recipient of the society’s Dr. Charles H. Wesley Medal of History, a Founding Fellow of the Masonic Society, and a member of the Society of Blue Friars (an invitation-only organization for Masonic authors and editors). His books include Blind Lemon Jefferson: His Life, His Death, and His Legacy (2002); Prince Hall Freemasonry in the Lone Star State: From Cuney to Curtis, 1875-2003 (2004), and Eliphas Levi and the Kabbalah: The Masonic and French Connection of the American Mystery Tradition (2006). His articles on theological and historical subjects have appeared in a number of newspapers, magazines, and journals. He is married to the former Debra Bass, a native of Fairfield, Texas. Lodge 180, Burleson had its monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, with emphasis on the completion of the fundraiser with all profits going to the Burleson Police Department to be utilized in various areas that need funding help. One of the areas that is dear to Lodge 180 members is the teddy bear program where bears are given to children when being helped during stressful moments of their young lives. District Three Director John Engelke and wife Diana were guests at our meeting. It’s always a privilege to see them and visit with them. All officers and members were in attendance at the meeting as well. We had the privilege of having Police Chief Billy Cordell present to receive a check in the amount of $500. Helping to make this presentation was Sandy Almonte. Sandy is a proponent of the teddy bear usage and what it represents
in helping children. Sandy helped Lodge 180 President Nancy Kelly present the check to the Chief. This money was designated to be utilized in the purchase of teddy bears to ensure that an ever-ready supply would always be on hand when needed. Also present were members of the Burleson Police Foundation, which is a non-profit organization to provide support for enhanced training and equipment for the police department. Those present were Patsy Dumas, Jeff Silverman, and Cleve Weyenberg, Jr. They received a check in the amount of $3,500 to be utilized in the above manner. They were very appreciative of the check and greatly surprised at the amount of money that was raised on behalf of the Burleson Police Department. had been specifically designed for our police. These shirts and hats were produced by Rick’s World of Sports in Maypearl, Texas. The beauty of these items were that they gave recognition to all police across our great state of Texas. We chose a large Yeti Tundra Cooler to be awarded to someone who invested in our chosen products for this endeavor as an incentive. This proved to be a huge asset when telling people about our project and how the profits would benefit the Burleson Police Department. A special meeting was held Wednesday, May 17, and Officer David Wardlaw drew the ticket for the lucky person. The lucky winner happened to be David’s partner - Tiffany Bauereisen. I think that it was very fitting that she happened to be the winner! I had an opportunity to sell shirts and hats at the police department utilizing their community room (where, incidentally, we hold our lodge meet-
ings) on April 5. Tiffany was so excited to be part of this project. She was the first person to make a purchase that morning, and she purchased four items. As president of Lodge 180, I had an opportunity to meet many people from Burleson and surrounding areas. I consider this an honor to be able to say that this venture has enriched my life by coming into contact with these folks. So many of our fellow neighbors lead such diversified and interesting lives that we have not had the opportunity to even see a glimpse of. It was refreshing and enlightening to get to meet these people. I know that this happened to other members as well while they were reaching out during this campaign. Many businesses, organizations, and individuals took part in this outreach by being willing supporters. Those were Continued on Page 11.

The May dance with Linda Kaye and the Kool Katz was a great success. They always put on a good show. The 50-50 drawing was won by Fred Armstrong, and the two free dance tickets to any dance but New Year’s Eve, were won by Barbara Armstrong and Buster Walker. Congratulations to all three winners! Kathy Riley is almost back to normal again after her heart surgery. She is going to zumba now, so that says a lot. Marvin McDowell is home and getting better each day. Helen Boyd is doing okay also, but please remember to pray for each of them and their families. Two $500 scholarships will be given to scholarship applicants at the July 21 SPJST dance. They are Brady Welch, grandson of Ruth Welch, and Hunter VanSchoubroek, grandson of Velma VanSchoubroek. The money for our scholarships comes from the 50-50 drawing and donations for ice and coffee. Thank all of you for participating in each one of these. The July dance is also the SPJST anniversary dance where all of the members get in free. This is another reason

An Attic Full of Memories
Old photos in a cardboard box in a dusty attic crypt, reveal a family’s history from birth to death, except

How bitter then the taste of life in every mouth of those, whose history they thought would keep in a cardboard box enclosed

Lodge 182 Falls County youth shares, “My Summer”
I went to Arkansas to see my family and my uncle who was in Little Rock and in the hospital. We spent a week in Arkansas. My dad thought of going to the cave that day so we took some cousins to see it with us, and we all enjoyed it. This year for YAD, I am taking a picture of an automobile and entering it. In softball this year, my team is doing great and in the championship. We won a lot of games and lost only about two games, which is good for us! Sometime this summer, I might go swimming at a cousin’s house. Also this summer, I am going to a reading class every Sunday. I am participating in this year’s SPJST Camp. I am going to a Chilton church camp and a Riesel
church camp to learn more about Jesus and to have fun and play with friends and other people around other places. My favorite thing about this summer is no school, and I get to spend time with family. I am going to Houston to visit more family. That is very nice we also have a lot of family in Houston where my dad grew up. We are visiting his grandparents who are our greatgrandparents. My family is everywhere which means a lot of places to visit and new sites to see - plus more family to visit! This year, I plan to cut my hair to make it shorter for the summer so I won’t be or get too hot having so much fun with family and friends that come over to play and spend the night. As you can see, my summer is fantastic and full of joy and happiness for my family and me! Bailee Beckendorf, age 10 —SPJST—

1st Place Flag Day essay Contest Ages 12 to 14 Years
Flying High for 240 Years
By Keith Wockenfuss lodge 88, Houston
What comes to your mind when you see the American flag? Do you think of your loved ones who fought for your freedom and the freedom of everyone in America? What I think of is what happened in the past 240 years and all the hardships that we have encountered. I also think of my great-grandfather who fought in World War II and my grandfather who fought in the Korean War. Mr. Leander Pflughaupt was a prisoner of war during World War II. He stayed in a concentration camp north of Berlin, Germany, for nine months during which time he ate green beans and worms to stay alive. This was a hard time for him, and he was lucky to survive it. He was part of the reason this country has been around for 240 years. The flag is important because it symbolizes our country and freedom. The red symbolizes hardiness and all of the bloodshed, the white symbolizes purity, and the blue symbolizes vigilance, perseverance, and justice. Since the blue is for justice. I think that is why the police wear blue because they bring justice to this country. There are 50 stars in the flag, and each star represents one of those 50 states. Flag presentations are the start of and are the reason for many events such as parades, special events, such as rodeos, ballgames, and meetings. We bring the flags forward at all of our meetings and honor them with the Pledge of Allegiance then a moment of silence to recognize those who are no longer with us. Flags are flown in countries all over the world and are recognized by everyone. Editor’s Note: See next week’s Vestnik for more first place winning age category Flag Day essays. —SPJST—
