Czech Ambassador

Continued from Page 1.

Texans of Czech descent throughout the state.” Before his appointment and since 2013, Ambassador Kmoníček worked as the Director of the Foreign Affairs Department in the Office of the President of the Czech Republic. Ambassador Kmoníček's diplomatic career has spanned more than two decades since he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, specifically its Department for Middle East and Africa, in 1995. He worked in different positions such as the Director of North Africa and Middle East Department, the Director General for Asia, Africa, and America, and the Deputy Foreign Minister in two different periods. He served as the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Australia, India, and to the United Nations in New York.

Before joining the foreign service, the Ambassador studied English and Arabic Language Studies at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, and Modern History of the Middle East and Hebrew and Arabic Languages Studies at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel. The Ambassador’s visit to Texas included receptions at the Sokol Athletic Center in Dallas, West Sokol in West, the West History Museum, Czech Heritage Museum in Temple, Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, and the Czech Center Museum in Houston. Private meetings with business leaders, academic officials, and military personnel were also held in Dallas and in Austin. The final event — a welcome reception for the Ambassador and his wife — at the Czech Center Museum in Houston on Saturday, June 17, marked the grand opening of the Czech Consulate in Houston located within the confines of the Czech Center Museum Houston at 4920 San Jacinto. The Czech Center Museum of Houston is also home base for SPJST Lodge 232, Houston Midtown

SPJST’s Czech Connection Czech-American roots run deep. The first Czech to set foot on American soil was Joachim Gans of Prague. Joachim was an explorer on an expedition to the New World led by Sir Walter Raleigh of England. Their ship landed in Roanoke, North Carolina, in 1585, predating the landing of the Pilgrims on the shores of Cape Cod by about 35 years. In 1776 — at the time of the Declaration of Independence — more than 2,000 Czech Moravian Brethren seeking religious

freedom were living in the American colonies. With the assistance of President Thomas Jefferson, the Czechs received land where they could settle and promote Christianity to native Americans. In Texas, Czechs began settling in the state in the 1840s. Economic hardship within the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the promise of a better life in Texas were key catalysts prompting the Czechs to leave their homelands for America. Even as whole villages were emptying in Moravia, the Czech populations of those villages were converging in new Czech communities in Texas. Galveston, Texas, was the main port of entry for these pioneer Czech immigrants to Texas. Correspondingly, SPJST was founded by Texas pioneers of Czech descent in 1897. By the 20th century, approximately 250 Czech communities had been settled in Texas. By some estimates, there are approximately 1 million American citizens of Czech ancestry living in Texas – more than any other state in the Union. —SPJST—

If you are looking for a cool place to be in this hot weather, you can come to our hall. We have a big, new air conditioner! It is really nice. This is something we have been needing for some time; we are so proud of it. We discussed changing our meetings to once every three months, but we decided we would rather leave them once a month. Virginia Williams made the motion to leave the meetings at once per month, seconded by Sandie Fischer. Motion carried.

Lunch at the Lodge We need to have a fundraiser so Sandie Fischer made the motion that we have an after-church old-fashioned lunch on Sunday, July 9 at our hall in Buckholts. Since the Post Office Cafe closed, we have no place to eat. We women like to have Sundays off with no cooking! The motion was seconded by Lamerle. Motion carried. It will be nice if this will work out. We really had a nice meeting. It was

so nice to have Lamerle meet with us. It was also nice to have Marian Warrich as a guest. Sandie surprised us with a delicious lemon and blueberry cake, which we enjoyed. The lodge is doing good. President Rodriguez says we have good bookings in June and July.

Jvonne motioned to accept the receipts. Ed seconded, and members voted to reimburse Bridget. For FAC business, Bridget reminded us of the upcoming meeting in Corpus Christi. Moving on to old business, David Kerlin submitted receipts for newly installed electrical outlets as well as window repairs. Jvonne made a motion to accept the receipts. Brenna seconded, and members voted all in favor. He also presented quotes for different baby changing tables. It was decided that dimensions needed to be compared to available space for mounting table. As to the new tables, members had previously voted to purchase, David brought in two different styles for us to choose between. Members decided to do more research to find the exact model preferred. New business consisted of Ed pointing out a couple of issues that needed to be addressed before Lake Fest occurred on the upcoming weekend. A support post needed to be repaired, and it was discovered that bees had inhabited the building’s water meter. David agreed to fix the post, and Ed said that he would check with the city about the bee removal. Jvonne made a motion for this to be done; Brenna seconded, and members voted for this to happen. Jesse and Linda Pospisil attended this month’s meeting to make presentations to the lodge. Jesse presented the Lifetime Achiever awards to Norma Cavanaugh, Leslie Loessin, and Ruby Loessin. (It was reported that last month Frank Horak presented these plaques. He actually presented Outgoing Officer plaques. I apologize for the mistake.) Unfortunately, these recipients are all currently experiencing poor health and were not in attendance. Therefore, Bridget Bohac, Doris Bell, and Tracie Ging accepted these awards on their behalf. In addition, Jesse presented the lodge with its enhanced premium winning lodge certificate. And finally, Jesse presented the lodge with a $3,000 check in honor of Lodge 20 being one of few remaining lodges that are still occupying their original building. Granger is the only lodge in District Two with this distinction. Jvonne made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Ed seconded; members were all in favor for adjournment. After the meeting adjourned, a drawing was held for items Jesse and Linda brought for us. They also brought pictures from years past for us to enjoy. Thank you, Jesse and Linda, for our new gifts and our old memories! Jvonne Lalla, Secretary —SPJST—

given away at the next meeting on Thursday, July 13, which is the white elephant sale and show-and-tell. For that day, the Circle will purchase pizza, salad, and dessert. I remember, we all enjoyed that last year. We will also meet at 10 a.m. as we don’t quilt. President Irene announced we have a new member Sandra Pochobradsky. Welcome, Sandra! President Irene’s tip of the day was what to use on your finger under the quilt when quilting. I’m sorry - I didn’t get what to use on your finger to coat it. The 50-50 dollar winner was Ginny Svehlak. As my Sarah was asked to draw and she drew Ginny’s name, Ginny gave Sarah half of the pot. Thank you, Ginny. That was so sweet. Of course, we had to stop at Walmart on the way home. President Irene thanked all for coming, for quilting, for the wonderful lunch, and for the set up and clean up. She announced that the next meeting will be Thursday, July 13. We won’t quilt. We will arrive around 10 a.m., the Circle will furnish a lunch of pizza, salad, and dessert. Be sure to bring all your sale items - priced. If they don’t sell, you take them back home. Please also bring your special treasures for show-and-tell - anything from your mom or grandmother, from a special trip, or something that someone gave you that means a lot. We would love to see and hear the story about whatever. We will have our meeting and play the 50-50 dollar game.

Other News Member Dorothy Bobalek announced her granddaughter Alexie Rendon graduated from Ennis High School on May 26. Alexie is a four-year honor graduate, and she received a four-year

scholarship to Texas Tech along with several other scholarships and awards. Since Alexie is vision-impaired, she has a seeing eye service dog named Honey, who will be accompanying her to college. Recently, Alexie was gifted with a pair of eSight eyeglasses. These new high-tech glasses help increase her ability to read small print, view videos, and see clearly at a greater distance. Dorothy said they are all excited for her, and rightfully, they should be. She is a beautiful, young, lovely girl. We all wish her the best. Dorothy Prachyl and daughter-in-law Cheryl Prachyl flew to Dana Point, California, to attend the graduation of Adam Cole - Dorothy’s grandson - from Dana Hills High School with honors. Adam’s parents Bill and Cathy Cole from Colorado also attended. If you remember me writing about one of Dorothy’s grandsons winning a swimming contest in California, well, Adam is the one. Adam’s brother Andrew, who is a student at the University of San Diego, also attended the graduation. Adam will attend UCLA in Los Angeles in the fall. Don’t you now they all had a wonderful time and are so very proud. Congratulations! Everyone, remember at the July 13 meeting, we will have a white elephant sale and show-and-tell, meeting, quilt prize drawing, 50-50 dollar game, and pizza, salad, and dessert lunch. You can start arriving about 11 a.m. Even though this is the day after July 4, be sure to wear something red, white, and blue as we will also celebrate Stanley Krenek’s birthday on July 4 and Margaret Laymance’s birthday on the 5th, the day of our meeting. We had two door prizes, and the winners were Pat McWilliams and Harold Strand. The winner of the first 50/50 dollar game was Mary Agnes Ward, and Lola Taylor was the winner of the second game. Congratulations, to all! Lorraine Cross showed her handmade cross-stitch piece she made for her friend - turning 90 years young - which read “Age is a matter of Mind. If you don’t Mind, it doesn’t Matter.” It was beautifully handmade, and all enjoyed the saying and seeing the piece. Darlene Tompkins reported sending get well cards to Judy de Grandchamp, Jimmy Spann, and Stanley Krenek. Stanley was in attendance at the meeting so we know he is doing fine, and we hope Judy and Jimmy are much improved by now. As reporter, I asked that if anyone had any news for my articles to let me know. I always enjoy writing about our members and their activities. June hostesses of Sharron Connelly and Anna Marie Moncrief were thanked for their great job along with Lola Taylor for the decorations. Rose Ann Spann

was missed. Mary Ann Krivanek was thanked for the two huge chicken spaghetti casseroles she brought which were enjoyed by all. Thanks, ladies! The August meeting was discussed. It will be Wednesday, August 2. August hostesses will be Mary Agnes Ward, Elizabeth Creamer, and Laurie Dawson. Libbie Vrla will pick up fried chicken. The theme will be Hawaiian, and we hear that Rose Ann’s daughter Debbie will present a ukulele program. This should be fun. Get your Hawaiian skirts and shirts out, and let’s party! August is also a designated month in which we bring non perishable food items for St. Thomas Food Pantry. The next social will be Wednesday, July 5 - nothing to bring but yourself. See you at Golden Corral on Alta Mere at 11 a.m. Just bring a good appetite.

News Our longtime sweet, homebound member Agnes Reznicek, age 103 1/2, is still in the nursing home and continues to have her “good days” and “bad days.” Let’s keep her in our prayers. She was always such a big Friendship Club supporter. Tracy Horn sure did enjoy her one day trip to Bryan to have lunch with oldest nephew Louis (Sugar) Zelmanek from Florida. Tracy’s daughter Karen Haggard of Euless drove her which Tracy said was a 90-mile one-way trip to have lunch at Golden Corral which 18 other relatives attended. Anyway, Tracy sure enjoyed the day and visited with all her relatives. This Sunday, Tracy will be going back to Bryan for the Luza-Matous family reunion which will be held at Wellborn, outside of Bryan. They had to change locations for the reunion as the church is undergoing some renovations, and the church hall is not avail-

able. Anyway, Tracy said it will be nice to visit with all the relatives. Pat McWilliams is looking forward to a Carnival Cruise vacation out of Galveston with family members. She said it has been a long time since she and her late husband have been on a cruise. She is real excited to be going. She is leaving on a Saturday, but said she would be back for our meeting. Marilyn Llewellyn also attended a family reunion at which relatives came from nine states. Marilyn and her sister are the youngest in the family, and they enjoyed all the catching up. She was disappointed that only six came to Mass at their new St. Thomas Church, but others felt they needed to leave for the long drive home. Debbie Skrasek is enjoying her granddaughter, Jacyee, during the summer. They seem to do all the fun things that little girls like to do. I call it “fun” seeing the world through a child’s eyes. Helen Skrasek has spent a few days in Oklahoma with son Ron and wife Leeann. I am sure she was treated like a queen just as she is treated like a queen by Gary and Debbie here in Fort Worth. I enjoyed my recent visit to Charlotte, North Carolina, to visit traveling friends Joe and Joyce Ehrenberger. We took many trips together over the years. Joyce continues to live in the cottage at a retirement village, while Joe is now in memory care. They are both doing well. I had taken a package of klobase, and one night Joyce fixed Joe a klobas, sauerkraut, slice of rye bread, and some mustard which we took over before his evening meal was served. He sure did enjoy it, and he ate every bite. I had a great visit, and Joyce sends her greetings to all her SPJST and Sokol friends. the Appalachian Trail, is about 969 miles in as of June 19. Soon, he will be at the halfway point. If all goes well, even with a few zero days, he should be able to complete the hike to Mt. Katahdin, Maine. The trails close October 1. I do know that Wip has a tent and sets it up at night to avoid the mice and snoring of other hikers, and has spent only a few nights in the shelter. There are about 250 shelters on the trail which have a floor, roof, and three walls. One wall is open to the element. Some have a loft for more sleeping space. There is a shelf in the shelter with a trail register to write and read news of those that have passed through. There is a broom in the shelter to sweep the floor before laying out your sleeping bags, and all sleep side by side with feet pointing toward the door. Usually there is a map inside or arrows painted on the outside walls pointing to the nearest water and the privy.

Bear boxes are sometimes located near shelters where there is a bear population. Usually hikers hang their food bag from the rafters to keep the mice out. I hear that mice are bad and fearless. Usually shelters are 10 to 15 miles apart along the trail. There are 100 or so campsites that are usually in vicinity of most shelters. Wip’s parents have returned from spending a week on the trails. I believe they did a lot of trail magic in picking up and transporting Wip and his friends to their rented house in a rented van; eating with all of the friends; then transporting them back to the trails in the morning. Of course, the group enjoyed this – having a bed to sleep in, shower, laundry facilities, and home-cooked meals which all participated in. The group consisted of ages 18 to 45, one married couple, a girl from England and her section hiker father, two other girls, and two other hiker men. This was in addition to Wip and his family of four others. Good luck to all you throughhikers. Hope you make it! See you at Golden Corral on July 5. So Until, Keep Smiling! District Two readies for July 12 to 16 camp

Dear District Two Campers, We are really excited about the 2017 “Live the Adventure of SPJST” camp theme. A lot is planned for campers of all ages. Camp will begin on Wednesday, July 12 and complete on Sunday, July 16, 2017. We are asking that chaperones and LITs arrive at 6:30 p.m. to prepare for your group’s arrival at 7 p.m. Other campers are asked to not arrive earlier than 7 p.m. since registration is from 7 to 9 p.m. If you cannot arrive before 9 p.m., then arrangements must be made with Patsy. Registration will be held in the dining hall, but please leave luggage in the vehicle until you are assigned a cabin. Parents or those dropping off campers must stay until all registration has been completed for each camper. All marked medication must be turned in to the nurse in the original bottle and a clear plastic bag. There should only be enough medication for the time needed at camp. Any cell phone, electronic device including an iPod, Nintendo DS, MP3 player, radio, and headset must not be brought to camp. All cell phones, other than those of chaperones will be turned in at registration if brought on camp grounds. This rule is for all campers and LITs. If any of the above is discovered, a call may be made to the parents by the DYC. District Two is not be responsible for any lost or damaged items. Cameras must be marked and turned in to the chaperone. Please do not bring any food or drinks. Plenty will be provided. Each camper is asked to please bring

a labeled water bottle. There will be plenty of water jugs around camp. Things to bring to camp r Twin sheets, pillow, light blanket r Towels and washcloths for 4 days r Personal articles (toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, hairbrush) r Clothes for 5 days, including undergarments (includes 1 extra set) r Tennis shoes/closed-toe shoes 2 pair if wearing one pair in pond r Flip-flops only to be worn to pool r Bag for dirty clothes with child’s name written on it r Shaving cream (non-menthol) turn in a registration r Sunscreen r 2 swimsuits (no string or tied bikinis) r Tee-shirt cover-up must be worn if swimsuit deemed inappropriate by DYC r Beach towel r Flashlight

Here is a list of some of the planned activities: swimming, the blob, high/low ropes course, paddle boats, kayaking, rifle range, bow and arrows, hayride, crafts, water slide, scavenger hunts, music, dancing, games, and so much more! Please contact your DYC if you have any questions. Parents, again, thank you for allowing us to spend quality time with your child. Every SPJST youth is special in their own way, and many “adventures” will be made at camp this year.

Flying High for 240 Years

1st Place Flag Day Essay Contest Ages Kindergarten to 8 Years By Noah Garcia Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje

240 years is a long time. I don't know how long that is. I bet you the flag is tired, flying for those many years. That must be a very long time. I wonder when the flag sleeps. When does the flag take a rest? When does it come down from that flag pole? I know when the flag sleeps! The flag sleeps when there is no wind. The flag sleeps when it rains and people put it up in a safe place like in a box or in a case. People retire when they get tired of working. So the flag also can retire when it gets tired, torn, broken, or even if it gets faded, like you can’t see that it is really a flag anymore. The flag must be very special to be flying for 240 years. It reminds us of our states, and we have 50 states and so we have 50 stars. I don’t want to live to be the age of the flag. I only want to live half of that. —SPJST— 1st Place Flag Day Essay Contest Ages 15 to High School Senior By April Dvorak Lodge 25, Ennis

As I walked through the National Mall, I saw an elderly man saluting an American flag. This man was wearing a Vietnam Veteran hat, and his eyes sparkled at the flag the same way a father prides his children. That day, American patriotism was defined to me in a way that has never been defined before. American patriotism is so much more than hot dogs at baseball games and popping fireworks on the Fourth of July. The red, white, and starry blue is a symbol of freedom’s shield and the banner on which we rely. For 240 years, the American Flag has been put through reams, but today, she still is flying high, although there may be a few rips in the seams. It all started when Washington marched her down to

Delaware, followed by a trip to New Orleans, and then Travis, Austin, and Houston at the Alamo. She was put through a lot, but she did not dare fly low. She was cut a few times at Chancellorsville and Shiloh Hill, she was with Robert E. Lee and Bragg, and they did not give up on our American Flag. She lead us through Korea, Vietnam, and even World War I and II, and I think you know the outcome because we are still flying the red, white, and blue. In the last year, I had the privilege to go to our nation’s capital for a national leadership forum. There, I met some very iconic political and military figures, but the people I cherish meeting most were those who just ‘get it.’ They were regular people who had the same love and appreciation for our country as I do. I was amazed at how powerful a group of patriotic teenagers could be. Together, we formed a new gratefulness for America, and as a team, we spread it throughout Washington, D.C. Although working as a team was an essential part of my journey, I believe the individual expedition was even more vital. I grieved as I witnessed TAPS, Arlington National Cemetery, Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, and the Washington Monument. When TAPS was playing at Arlington National Cemetery, so much patriotism and respect was being shown by hundreds of people. As I peered over the thousands of white tombstones rising from the ground, a feeling of emptiness filled me, but at the same time, I felt overwhelming pride to be so lucky to have such courageous individuals in my country. I also met many veterans and felt obligated to shake their hand and say, “thank you.” As I shook their hands, I realized my freedom was once held in those hands. If it were not for them, America would not be free. Every American who rests their head at night in peace, does so because some other American laid down their life for them. So much tyranny has been fought against through the years, and that heroic veteran’s pride taught me that no matter the hard times, our American Flag will continue to serve as a symbol of pride and fly high for many more 240 year anniversaries. —SPJST—

by Numbers -

Lesson “6”

elcome to Czech by Numbers, Radio Prague's own Czech language series, which explores Czech numbers and also their use in idioms. In this lesson, we’ll be looking at the number six - šest. The common Indo-European origin of the Czech and English word is just about noticeable in the sound.

Instead of šest, our ancestors sometimes used to say půl tuctu - half a dozen - but you will rarely hear that said these days. The figure of six - šestka - can mean a molar tooth or room or bus number 6. If you say about somebody that he or she má nohu šestku it means they wear size 6 shoes. You need to be careful there because if you use the plural má šestky you

would be referring to the size of a completely different item of clothing. The ordinal number, sixth, is šestý. You will often hear that someone has šestý smysl - a sixth sense for something. Šestice is a group of six. Šesticípá hvězda is a six-pointed star. A colloquial expression o sto šest literally “for a hundred and six” can be translated as “with a vengeance.” A typical use of the idiom would be pracuje o sto šest, he works very hard. Another Czech word derived from the number six is šesterák - a stag with six tines, a six-pointer. Whereas, šesták was originally a six-kreutzer coin. Today, the word is used to describe a small coin or a small amount of money. Pracovat za pár šestáků means to work for peanuts. And this is the end of lesson number six - šestá lekce. We’ll be back with the lucky number seven. Till then, na shledanou - good-bye.
