hat a wonderful surprise it was to meet a very special Věstník subscriber in Taylor, Texas, last week! After the Western Days Grand Parade in Elgin, David and I stopped for lunch at Sirloin Stockade in Taylor. We were greeted by the friendliest, sweetest server known as “Grandma Victoria.” Victoria Domel has been waiting tables and sharing her warm personality and beautiful smile with customers at Sirloin Stockade for the past 11 years. She says she enjoys attending events at Lodge 29, Taylor. She also enjoys keeping up with her family and friends in SPJST through the Věstník and learning about her Czech heritage. Have You Responded to the Věstník and Calendar Survey? For the past six weeks, the Věstník has featured a survey on the back page asking if you would like to continue receiving the Věstník; if you wish to receive it by mail, email, or both; and if you wish to receive an SPJST calendar. Have you responded? If you have, thank you! There is no need to respond again. But, if you have not responded and do not respond by July 15, you will soon be deleted from the Věstník mailing list. I really hope that doesn’t happen so please respond today! Take a look at the back page of this week’s Věstník. If you enjoy receiving the Věstník

and wish to continue receiving it, please let us know so that we will continue to send it to you. And, let us know if you would like to receive the Věstník by mail, email, or both. We must hear from you by July 15. If we do not hear from you, your name will be dropped from the Věstník mailing list :( I hope that you take a moment and respond today. We occasionally send out these surveys to make sure that the Věstník is being received by members who do indeed wish to receive it each week. Now, I have a very special request. Many of our members who receive the Věstník are homebound or in retirement centers and assisted living facilities. These members may or may not have the ability to respond to the survey on the back page. If you know someone who cannot respond but wishes to continue receiving the Věstník, please reach out and help them so that their Věstník does not stop coming. Please contact me if you have questions.

Dear Officers and Members of SPJST, Thank you so much for choosing me to be a recipient of the SPJST scholarship. I am truly happy to be a part of this great organization and appreciate the opportunities that it provides to its members. My family and I are proud that I received this scholarship; it will truly help me gain the education needed to reach my goal of becoming a high school choral director. My mother Patricia Janak Redding is especially proud and thankful, as this same scholarship also helped her with her college expenses when she graduated from high school in 1989. Thank you for all that the SPJST has done for our family. Best regards, Maryssa Redding Lodge 4, Hallettsville —SPJST—

State FAC shares July fraternal updates

Reserve Your Room Now for the End of Summer Getaway Good times are in store for you at the 11th Annual Corpus Christi Getaway! Make plans now to join old and new friends on August 11 to 13, 2017, for a fun-filled weekend. Last year, approximately 368 men, women, boys, and girls from across the state enjoyed the weekend fraternal celebration. As in years past, SPJST rooms are blocked at the Emerald Beach Hotel in Corpus Christi. As of June 21, there were 22 rooms with doubles available for both Friday and Saturday and 15 rooms with king beds available. This is out of the 150 rooms blocked that were set aside for the event. There are seven cabana rooms on the beach that are available. If you have not already done so, please make your reservations as soon as possible by calling the hotel at 361-883-5731 and refer to group code “SPJ” to assure proper room rates. Rates will change Thursday, July 27 to summer rates. If you have any problems or concerns while making your reservation, please ask to speak with Mary Alice. The 2017 celebration officially kicks off with the Friday night Aloha Party. Saturday’s events will once again include sand sculpting, horseshoes, 42 dominoes, bunco, the evening awards presentation, and music by Chris Rybak. If you have any questions about the event in general, please contact Frank at by email at frankh@spjst.com or call 254-534-0681.

SPJST Weekend Retreat Great news! During the April Supreme Lodge meeting, it was unanimously approved to have an adult weekend retreat in 2017 at the SPJST Camp. Plans are in the works for the retreat to be September 22 to 24. ENC Camp Executive Director Jeb Lapeyrolerie and I will be working on coordinating activities. We are planning some unique elements for this weekend retreat. Make sure to check your Vestnik for updates on the adult camp program and my monthly newsletter.

July 4, 2017 As we prepare to observe our nation’s Independence Day, I want to share some information about Independence Day. The information below can be found on the National Archives webpage http://www.archives.gov/press/press-releases/2005/nr05-83.html Did you know . . . Independence Day should actually be July 2? And other little known facts about The Declaration Of Independence. Washington, D.C. . . . America’s revolutionary Charter of Freedom, the Declaration of Independence is a document upon which our nation’s founding principles were established. The National Archives will celebrate the 241st anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence with its traditional Fourth of July program. History lovers young and old can view the Declaration of Independence and speak with actors playing those who signed this important document! All programs are free, open to the public, and take place at the National Archives Building on Constitution Avenue between 7th and 9th Streets, N.W. Washington D.C. The Declaration of Independence set the course for our nation on a journey of freedom, which also led this historic document on its own journey. For example, did you know . . . Who authored the Declaration of Independence? Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence, which was then edited by John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. Jefferson took their edits and incorporated them into what would become the version finally adopted.

Independence Day should have been July 2. July 2,1776, is the day that the Continental Congress actually voted for independence. John Adams, in his writings, even noted that July 2 would be remembered in the annals of American history and would be marked with fireworks and celebrations. The written Declaration of Independence was dated July 4 but wasn’t actually signed until August 2. Fifty-six delegates eventually signed the document, although all were not present on that day in August. Who signed and in what order? John Hancock signed first, with a large hand right in the middle because he was the President of the Congress. The others signed by state delegation, beginning in the upper right in one column, and then proceeding in five other columns, arranged from the northernmost state (New Hampshire) to the southernmost (Georgia). Who signed last? It is believed Thomas McKean of Delaware was the last person to sign. When Congress authorized the printing of an official copy with the names attached in January 1777, McKean’s name was not included. He signed after that date, or the printer made a mistake by omitting him. Here is one more fun fact. Line of Descent – Actress Reese Witherspoon is a direct descendant of John Witherspoon, one of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. John Witherspoon is pictured in a Barry Faulkner Mural, entitled “The Declaration of Independence,” which illustrates 28 delegates to the Continental Congress of 1776. This newly restored mural is hanging in the Rotunda of the National Archives.

Lodge 18, Elgin hosts float in Western Days parade

Here we are all set to enjoy the summer! Our meeting was short and sweet. We had the SPJST Float here for the Western Days parade on Saturday, June 24, 2017. We had the officers and F.L. ride the float; it was fun. Melanie and David do such a great job. I don’t think we give them enough thanks. We have Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six on Sunday, July 16; Sunday, July 30 will be The Lost Cause. These are two good bands. We have a great dance floor and a nice, cool hall. What better way to enjoy a Sunday afternoon. Charles, David, and F.L. are still working on the youth room. It is really looking good. Great job, guys! We had two guests - our scholarship winner Randon Whitsitt and his grandmother. Thank you for coming to our meeting. It’s nice to meet the young people we help. We had good news. There was no major damage to the roof, but we need to replace one air conditioning unit. Having no other business, it was time

Fritz Hodde of Lodge 18, Elgin Entertains in Granger

Summertime is here, and that means it’s time to relax and have fun. The Granger Picnic was the perfect place to do so. The picnic was held on Sunday, June 25, 2017, at SS Cyril and Methodius Recreation Center. Even though it did rain a little bit on my way there, I didn’t think it was a bad thing. The weather here has been so hot and humid, that a little bit of rain might be just what this area needed. I know the farmers in this central Texas area appreciated the showers very much. The picnic was a big hit and was just the thing everybody needed to get out of the house and have a fun time. The fried chicken plates were delicious and had

that good old-fashioned home-cooked flavor. I don’t know anyone in this state who doesn’t enjoy country home cooking, and the plates at Granger were a perfect example of that. The entertainment was provided perfectly by two great bands. First up, were the Ennis Czech Boys. I love those dual saxophones that Frankie Vrla and Chris Trojacek played on almost every song. That sound reminded me of the Vrazels’ Polka Band which made the music even more enjoyable. I just hope Frankie and Chris’ lips aren’t too sore, ha-ha! The highlight of the day had to be when Mr. Fritz Hodde showed up looking better than

ever. For those of you who don’t know, Fritz had been in the hospital for a while due to issues with his kidney. From prayers and strong medical help, Fritz came out of the hospital stronger than ever. It was such a wonderful sight to see Fritz back on stage squeezing away on his accordion with The Fabulous Six. However, Fritz’s daughter inlaw Diane did a great job filling in for him while he was recuperating. Nevertheless, Fritz and the Fabulous Six played great, and everyone loved them. Fritz was welcomed back with open arms and much love from everybody. I loved seeing all of the little ones

dancing along to the music as well. They sure did love doing “The Chicken Dance.” I even did the dance with them; it looked so much fun I just couldn’t resist. Parents, please keep in my mind, the kids may dance all they want, just make sure they are careful and do not get hurt. At the end of the dance, Fritz and the guys performed a medley of favorite polka songs as everyone gathered in front of the stage and sang along. Fritz then thanked everyone, and the band closed with the classic favorite, “Goodnight Irene,” which was written all the way back in 1892 by Huddie Ledbetter. The event had a great turnout, and everyone had a great time. Keep an eye out for many other polka dances and Czech events coming up this summer. —SPJST—

State Youth Director shares July updates

It’s summer, and you know what that means! It’s time for SPJST District Camps, District Youth Achievement Days (YAD), State Youth Achievement Day, and last, but not least, the Corpus Christi End of Summer Getaway. By the time this newsletter gets to you, Districts Three, Four, and Seven will have had their YADs. District Two YAD will be hosted by Lodge 47, Seaton on July 8; District Six YAD will be held at Taiton Community Center on July 16; Districts Five and One will both be held on July 23 - District Five will be at Lodge 88, Houston, and District One will be at Caldwell Community Center. I look forward to seeing your talents at these events! District camps start in July as well, and our 2016-2017 State Royalty will make their final public appearance at the July 4 parade in Belton, Texas. Our Leaders-In-Training Workshop was held at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm on June 9 to 11. I had a great time engaging with our youth. The main concept of the camp was to convey the responsibilities of an LIT. This year was the year for new beginnings and firsts. This was the first group of SPJST youth to attend camp at this location under the new ownership of SPJST and use the newly renovated high ropes challenge course. This group was the first of many groups to have the opportunity to set the pace for centuries of new camp traditions for their predecessors. New camp songs were introduced, and Mr. Mike Spiller led us in team building and fun games for the LITs to use as fillers when things slow down this summer at camp. The youth put their heads together to work through lock

boxes, created a picture of what qualities a leader should have, and worked on cabin agreements. Everyone, including SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, enjoyed the new game that will be introduced at camp this year – Mass Organized Chaos. The group was treated to an outside dinner of grilled burgers with all the fixings, baked beans, chips, cookies, and soda provided and prepared by SPJST District One Director/Supreme Lodge Chairman Donnie Victorick and his awesome wife Janice. On Friday night, everyone enjoyed a dance and some time hanging out with newfound friends. I feel that everyone was able to take something away from this LIT camp, and this is what SPJST is all about! Thank you to Tammy Martinez and Katie Wilganowski and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Horak for all of the help and support. A big thank you to all of the District Youth Counselors, their assistants, chaperones, and nurse Holly Narro who worked double duty without incident. The Vipers had the winning tee-shirt design, and I will be getting the shirts to the LITs hopefully before district camps. I know that many of our youth are excited about going to camp. Education and Nature Center Executive Director Jeb Lapeyrolerie and his staff are ready for our camps to begin. Once again, camp staff includes people from all around the globe as well as several past SPJST youth members. Let’s make this a summer that our youth will enjoy and have fond memories of the time they spent with their friends and family. NATIONAL PARENTS’ DAY

National Parents’ Day was established in 1994 when President Bill Clinton signed a Congressional Resolution into Law (36 U.S.C. § 135) for: recognizing, uplifting, and supporting the role of parents in the rearing of children. Even for those without parents, there are special people in our lives. National Parents’ Day honors all parents on the fourth Sunday in July. In May we celebrated mothers, and in June we celebrated fathers. It follows that in July we can bring all our parents together and show them some appreciation all at once. Parents play a vital role in the lives of children. From the day we are born, parents are our protectors, teachers, providers and role models. As families, they are the core of our communities. On National Parents’ Day we honor all parents do every day to raise up their children in a world that is constantly changing and challenging. Here are some ideas if you are looking for some things to do to make this years National Parents’ Day a memorable one 1. Create a personalized gift for your parents to signify and appreciate their role in your life. 2. Host a barbecue or family get-together. 3. Show appreciation for your family. 4. Compliment someone else on their parenting. https://nationaldaycalendar.com/national-parents-day-fourth-sunday-in-july/

This is a good time to recognize the role your parents play in your life everyday. This day is aimed to promote responsible parenting and to recognize positive parental role models. It celebrates the special bonds of love between parent and child. Get creative and figure out the best way you can celebrate your parents or special people who support and protect you.

How Will You Celebrate Your Parents?

2016 - 2017 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance

Fourth Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the June 2016 to May 2017 youth year. This is total merit points for the 20162017 youth year thusfar. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended from June 2016 to May 2017. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities.

What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards.

Contest Dates June 1, 2016 to May 31, 2017

Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior

Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Youth Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Youth Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Youth Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest. Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Youth

Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.

Merit Point Awards First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division. Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through fifth place awards to qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The junior and teen with the most points in each district also receive recognition. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first place will receive the award.* Junior and Teen Point Awards First Place $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place - $20 Fourth Place - $15 Fifth Place $10

What is an Active Youth Member? A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten

year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school. Dist Ldg Name Pts Mtgs

Lesson “7”

ello and welcome to Radio Prague’s Czech language course Czech by Numbers, which explores numbers and their usage in everyday Czech speech. This is lesson number seven lekce číslo sedm. The word for the number seven - sedm - is very similar in all Slavonic languages, and you can hear how much the sound resembles the English numeral.

Seven is considered to be a lucky number in many cultures. Sedmička je šťastné číslo. In folk tales and fairy tales, characters and objects often occur in sevens, for example, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - Sněhurka a sedm trpaslíků; and there are also the useful seven-league boots - sedmimílové boty, and, of course, the Seven Wonders of the World - sedm divů světa - and so on and so forth. The figure of seven is called sedmička, as we said before. The word can be used to describe a molar tooth, the seventh

grade in school or a number 7 tram. In colloquial language, the word sedmička means a 7.5 decilitre bottle of wine. Sedmák is a seventhgrader and one seventh is sedmina. The ordinal number is sedmý. A well-known expression být v sedmém nebi means to be in the seventh heaven, to be extremely happy. A similar word, sedma, means a seven in cards. The expression zelený jak sedma, literally “as green as a seven,” describes someone who is feeling sick and looks pale. The expression comes from the picture of green leaves on the card. Sedmilhář, literally a “seven-liar” is just a poetic word for a liar, for someone who likes to make up stories. A similarsounding, also rather poetic word is sedmikráska - a “seven-beauty” in literal translation, meaning a daisy. And that’s it for today; we’ll be back. Till then, good-bye - na shledanou.
