CORPUS CHRISTI

END OF SUMMER

GETAWAY AUG.11-13

Good times await you at the 11th Annual Corpus Christi Getaway. Make plans now for a fun-filled weekend on Friday, August 11 to Sunday, August 13, 2017, with your SPJST friends and family! Last year, approximately 368 men, women, boys, and girls from across the state came out to enjoy the weekend fraternal celebration. As in years past, SPJST rooms have been blocked at Emerald Beach Hotel in Corpus Christi. Please make every effort to reserve your rooms early. A total of 150 rooms were set aside for the event; however, only a few of those rooms remain to be reserved as of press time. Do not wait . . . make your reservations today by calling the hotel at 361-883-5731 and refer to group code “SPJ” to assure proper room rates. If you have any problems or concerns while making your reservation, please ask to speak with Mary Alice. The deadline for the SPJST special discount rate is Wednesday, July 26. The 2017 celebration kicks off with the Friday night aloha party. Saturday’s events will include sand sculpting, horseshoes, 42 dominos, bunco, and an evening safari party featuring music by Chris Rybak.

Congratulations to 2017-2018 District Two Royalty. They are, left to right, Duchess Molley Taisler and Queen Shelby Horak, both of Lodge 80, Holland, and King Ryan Festa and Duke Tyson Bilbrey, both of Lodge 47, Seaton. They were crowned on July 8 at Lodge 47, Seaton. District Two YAD photos and results appear on pages 10 to 12.

A

little mouse woke up one morning in its lair, yawned, stretched, and prepared for the upcoming day. When it peered out of its hole in the wall of the farmer’s house, he saw the farmer and his wife struggling to open a large package laying on the floor. “I wonder what kind of food is inside” the mouse thought to himself, only to realize that it’s not food, but rather a clever mouse trap. The mouse quickly ran out of the house screaming: “There’s a mouse trap in the house! There’s a mouse trap in the house!” A well-fed hen that was sitting and enjoying the morning sun, lazily raised its head and clucked: “Mr. Mouse, I see it’s something that greatly troubles you, but it has no effect on me. Please stop interrupting my sleep and go somewhere else.” The mouse hurried along, looking for other animals it can warn about the great danger, and when he saw the sheep, he called: “There’s a mouse trap in the house! There’s a mouse trap in the house!” The sheep bleated back: “I really do feel for you, Mr. Mouse, but there’s nothing I can do, but I wish you well, and good luck!” The mouse continued on, and came to the cow shed almost out of breath. When he saw the cow, he shouted: “There’s a mouse trap in the house! There’s a mouse trap in the house!” The cow used its tail to banish an annoying fly, nodded her head sadly, and said: “Oh dear! Believe me that I truly feel for your plight, but as a cow, I can’t find a reason to leave the shed.” Rejected and humiliated, the mouse returned to the farmhouse, knowing full well that it would have to deal with the trap on his own. Later that night, a loud noise interrupted everyone’s sleep – it seemed that the mousetrap had finally caught its prey. The farmer’s wife got out of bed all excited and hurried to see the little bandit that was caught in the trap. However, in the darkness, she could not see that what was caught in the trap is not the tail of a gray little mouse, but the tail of a poisonous snake.

The snake bit the wife and the farmer had to rush her to the hospital. After a while, the farmer and his wife went back home, but then her fever spiked and would not go down. Since it is known that the best cure for a fever is fresh chicken soup, the farmer quickly went outside and turned the chicken into soup. The farmer’s wife drank the soup, but alas – her fever did not go down. The rumor about her condition spread wildfire, which led to visits from concerned friends and family members. The farmer was happy to see so many people in the house, but to feed them he had to throw a large dinner, and serve a rack of lamb as the main course. Everyone ate the food and thanked the farmer, but all of the best wishes and prayers were for naught, and a week later, the farmer’s wife passed away. Many more people came to pay their respects, and to thank them all, the farmer served his prize cow as juicy steaks. The mouse was watching the events unfold from his little hole, and sighed. We often hear of someone who’s in trouble, but when it doesn’t directly affect us, we may decide not to lend a hand. Life, however, is a journey, a major part of which requires mutual responsibility, and when the weakest person in society is in peril, we should all feel threatened. If we help each other, we will be stronger together, but if we think only of ourselves, we end up hurting everyone. —Author Unknown

We were so happy to have as our guests District Two Director Jesse Pospisil and wife Linda. We really put them to work. We were very shorthanded. They helped us out in so many ways. Treasurer Sandie Fischer gave our financial report which was approved as read. Our bookings are going great. In old business, the fundraiser meal was very successful which means we will be having another one probably in September. It was so hot outside, but very pleasant inside with our new cooling system. We have many folks to thank for making it so successful. We especially want to thank Sandie, Mary Helen, and Scott for the preparation of the delicious food and for all the other folks who helped us out in so many ways. We appreciated all of those who attended. We appreciated all the nice donations. We want to especially thank the Community Church for its donation of $200, Jesse and Linda Pospisil - $150, Jack Walzel (Tri-Co Propane) - $250, donations from Delbert Svetlik - $100, Derrick Ruzicka, and others. We discussed one of our recent meetings to watch out for a good, used riding

Since I can no longer operate it, he said I will just donate it to Lodge 15, Buckholts. It is in good condition as far we know. He sent a trailer down and packed it up, got it all serviced, blades sharpened, fixed one flat tire, and it was ready to go. So we lucked out. We have just completed our first mowing with it. He said if we have any problems, just call him 254-742-5213 (Tri-Co Propane). Doug Williams made the motion that we adjourn, seconded by Sandie Fischer.

Lodge 15, Buckholts members Anton and Albina Vrazel celebrate 65th anniversary

On May 7, 1952, Albina Vansa and Anton Vrazel exchanged wedding vows at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Marak, Texas, with Reverend Ben Holub officiating. They celebrated with a reception, dinner, and dance at National Hall in Cameron. The couple has lived all their lives in the MarakYarrellton community. They have two children Linda Marie Vrazel Wilde who married Daniel Wilde in 1976, and Rose Marie Everett; and two grandchildren Jennifer Everett and Justin Everett. Mr. Vrazel was a farmer and rancher. He was also a musician, played accordion, and was manager of the Vrazels’ Polka Band for the entire 55 years that the band performed. He still loves getting up on stage and playing a few songs with the band members for special occasions. Mrs. Vrazel was a cook in the lunchrooms of Cameron Independent School District and is a loving mother and homemaker. She also loves taking care of her lovely rose gardens. Anton and Albina were honored with a diocesan certificate for their faithfulness to their wedding vows on Sunday, June 4 by Father George at

Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Marak. They renewed their wedding vows at mass that day. It is rare to see a couple married for so many years these days, and even more rare to see that they still attend the same church and renew their vows in the same church that they said their original vows in 65 years ago. The couple was treated to a road trip by their daughter Linda, who took them to Shreveport, Louisiana; Vicksburg, Mississippi; Tunica, Mississippi; Memphis, Tennessee; and Jacksonville, Texas, where they went to farm museums, city tours, casinos, train rides, a visit to a safari, and a variety of other activities along the way. Eating out and just spending time together telling stories about things that happened in the family during all those years was the most fun of the entire trip. Anton and Albina are members of Lodge 15, Buckholts. Daniel and Linda Wilde are members of Lodge 24, Cyclone where Daniel serves as president and Linda serves as treasurer. Rose, Justin, and Jennifer Everett are also members of Lodge 24, Cyclone. —SPJST—

Lodge 18, Elgin presents scholarship

Congratulations to Lodge 18, Elgin scholarship winner Randon Whitsitt, left! Lodge 18 President David Meyer recognized Randon at the June lodge meeting.

Lodge 18, Elgin presents scholarship

Randon Whitsitt and his grandmother were guests at the June meeting of Lodge 18, Elgin. Randon came to say thank you for the scholarship. We did not have an SPJST member apply for the scholarship. Just think - if you are a member, not only can you apply for the local scholarship, the SPJST Home Office gives scholarships also. We know how expensive an education can be. Our granddaughter got her law degree. That was not expensive enough, you have to pay to take the bar exam. Check us out. Please come to one of our meetings - no obligations. See all the benefits that SPJST has to offer. You just might like what you see! Irene Vrabel —SPJST—

Lodge 24, Cyclone gives to FFA, church

Lodge 24, Cyclone met on Monday night, July 9, 2017, amid oceans of ripening corn and a few fields of milo and cotton. The meeting was called to order by President Daniel Wilde with the Pledge of Allegiance and a silent prayer for our deceased members and for the military. Margaret Mikeska read the minutes of the last meeting, and they were approved as read. Linda Wilde gave the treasurer’s report, and it was accepted. Brenda Maddux gave the FAC report with the Corpus Christi Getaway on August 11 to 13. Mark Maddux gave the bar report. State YAD is August 5 in Temple. Richard Green sold the piano for $200 and gave away the furniture. The

trash pickup is now with Centroplex Sanitation as our last operator sold his accounts. They are doing us a single service. We will have our appreciation dinner at Oscar Store on Monday, August 14 at 7 p.m. for everyone who worked at the Mother’s Day fundraiser. We are making plans to host the District Two Fall Meeting on Sunday, August 27. We also talked about the January 20 dance with SqueezeBox with Ted Lange and Mollie B. We are waiting with bated breath for their dance and the Red Ravens dance on February 18. We voted to give $100 to Rogers FFA for an ad on a shirt and $100 to a church picnic. There was a discussion of taking the telephone out that the writer thought was a dumb idea. Sadly, more members were for it. We are a business and cannot afford to run the hall like our home in his opinion. The matter was left open. We did get some bookings from the phone although not many. Brenda Maddux has her foot on the mend, and Margaret Mikeska will have a knee operation in the last week of August. For the Lodge Bobby Hoelscher, Reporter —SPJST—

Wilbert and Susan Cernosek celebrate 40th anniversary

Susan and Wilbert Cernosek of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on Friday, July 16, 2017. The couple met in 1975 at Bill Mraz Ballroom. They were married July 16, 1977, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ammannsville, Texas. They had a very large, traditional Polish/Czech wedding with a grand march and a bridal dance. Music was provided by the Ellinger Combo, the couple’s favorite polka band. They danced into the hall to their favorite polka - “The Texas Plains.” After a honeymoon trip to the Grand Ole Opry, the couple made

their home in northwest Houston. They have a lovely family consisting of their two children - Melissa Cernosek and Allen Cernosek. They also have a sevenyear-old delightfully funny grandson Lucas Ridgway Cernosek. Wilbert works as an inspector for the city of Houston, and Susan is a retired floral designer. The Cernoseks are celebrating this special year of Susan turning 60, Wilbert turning 65, and 40 wonderful years of marriage by taking their first cruise to Alaska. Lodge 141, Sealy reports on successful Join Hands Day

SPJST Lodge 141, Sealy members met Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at Gordon Memorial Library. The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance led by President Rick Martinez. This was followed by roll call of officers. Secretary Bernice Stolarski read the minutes, and Freda Jemela gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved. Bernice Stolarski presented a bill for $19.20 to cover the cost of Join Hands Day. This was approved. Join Hands Day was a great success with everyone’s help. We had about 40 youths and adults working together. In August, we will contact Melanie about booking the float for the Austin County Fair parade on Thursday, October 12 and the Wallis Christmas parade which is the third Saturday in December - the 16th. We were waiting for Donnie Victorick to join us; however, we decided to adjourn the meeting since we had no more business to discuss. Apparently, we just missed him by a few minutes. Lodge 180, Burleson July meeting minutes

The normal meeting date was postponed because we had another opportunity to celebrate July 4 and be reminded of all that it stood for and what it represents to our country. God bless America. We had our monthly meeting at Burleson Police Department on Tuesday, July 11, 2017. The meeting was called to order by President Nancy Kelly. She asked that Logan Almonte lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance, which was followed by a moment of silent prayer for all of our loved ones. All officers were present with the exception of Secretary Carmon Babina who was not feeling well. She was greatly missed by all. Treasurer Rhonda Hurtik took notes for the secretary so that we may remain current in following protocol for our meetings. Rhonda Hurtik read the minutes of the last meeting, and they were approved as read. The financial report followed and was also approved as read. All communications received were read at this time and contained many thank yous regarding our contributions to the Burleson Police Foundation as well as Burleson Police Teddy Bear Fund. We also received many individual thank yous and phone calls as well from those people who participated in this community outreach program. We are all saddened and will truly miss him and his jokes, music, singing, and the presence of him that lights up the room. President Tom Etheredge then went over all the communications and events from the Home Office. We discussed the kids campout, adult weekend retreat, and summer getaway. Tom Etheredge then discussed the Fourth of July and the really cool story behind it, and how it should really be on the 2nd! I wish all were there to hear it. He also added that actress Reese Witherspoon is of direct descent from John Witherspoon who signed the Declaration of Independence. For some great entertainment, Jennave Fuchs led us in some patriotic songs, and she also read Wilfred Fuchs favorite poem, “Set me Free.” It was beautiful. Thank you so very much! Every time I hear the song “Silent Night,” I will think of a great man named Wilfred Fuchs. Set Me Free a poem by Valentino M. Flores

Don’t grieve for me, now I’m free, I’m following the path God laid for me. I took his hand when I heard him call. I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day, to laugh, to love to work or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way, I found that peace at the close of the day. If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, ah, yes, these things I too will miss.

Be not burdened with time of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life’s been full, I’ve savored much. Good friends, good times, an undue grief.

Lift up your heart and share with me. God wanted me now, he set me free.

We enjoyed a tasty potluck of hot dogs with all the fixings! Birthdays for July include Ty Roman, Helen Urbis, Richard Henderson, Nancy Johnson, Glenn Ehlinger, Connie Hoelscher, Donna Hagens, Stephen Keltgen, Lori Petty, Patrick Fojt, Kenneth Meyer, Lauren Johnson, Blake Henderson, Brandon Johnson, Nathan Ehlinger, Lindsey Evans, Caleb Meyer, Bradley Scott Barron, and Keely Hrachovy. Lodge 155, Austin youth participates in Fourth of July parade

Lodge 191, Lufkin anniversary dance Friday, July 21

We hope everyone had a great Fourth of July and realized what the day means. It is really beginning to feel like summertime now, but we had a great spring this year. It did not go from cold to hot in one day. Everyone had a great time at the June dance with Glenn Lenderman and Friends. Maxey Kirkley won the 50-50 drawing, but had to leave early so he gave his ticket to Vic Moravits who accepted the money on Maxey’s behalf. The free dance tickets, to any dance but New Year’s Eve, were won by Wanda Hunt and Vic Moravits. Congratulations to all of the winners! SPJST’s newest member is Linda Darlene Montgomery from Huntington. Welcome to SPJST, Darlene! This means she gets to come to the anniversary dance free of charge, plus she only has to pay $6 to attend the dance each month. The Friday, July 21 dance will be the anniversary dance to which all of the members get in free of charge. The band for the anniversary dance will be Jarando, formerly Buffalo Nickel. Please bring a covered dish or snack food for the food table. SPJST Lodge 191, Lufkin will give two $500 scholarships. One goes to
