est of luck to all youth who are participating in this Saturday’s State Youth Achievement Day at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. A schedule appears on page 26 of this week’s Věstník. SPJST youth - along with their parents and grandparents - have been preparing for this day for many weeks and months. The SPJST Youth Program is a threepart program - educational, patriotic, and social - and Youth Achievement Days are a huge part of the educational element. The nine craft categories - constructed items, foods, handicraft, hobby kits, needlework, photography, pictorial arts, science and education, and sewing - plus, special category at State YAD - promote growing and learning in so many ways for kids. Arts and crafts projects encourage fine motor skills, neural development, problem-solving abilities, and creativity. The talent portion of the State YAD program will surely entertain you. Youth will compete in individual and group talents like singing, dancing, and dramatics. The competition is a great opportunity for our young people to get up in front of a crowd to perform. It builds confidence and experience and develops leadership. Six young ladies and four young men will compete for the prestigious titles of 2017-2018 SPJST State King and State Queen. The contestants are featured on pages 16 and 17. The speeches that these contestants have prepared summarize the benefits of active membership in an SPJST youth club and restore hope for SPJST’s future.
SPJST Calendar Update For the first time in 46 years, or since 1971, the State Royalty Court will not be featured on the SPJST Calendar. We will share the traditional royalty photo on the cover of an upcoming Věstník. In the July 18 to 20 quarterly meeting, the Supreme Lodge voted 6 to 5 to not print a 2018 calendar. Thanks to the almost 3,000 members who checked “yes” on the form asking if they would like to continue receiving the annual SPJST calendar. And, thanks to Temple Daily Telegram for researching more cost effective calendar formats. We will plan to include some of the calendar’s features - like the recipes in an upcoming Věstník. Heartfelt Sympathy We send sincere sympathy to SPJST Home Office Scanning/Data Entry Clerk Marie Wolf and her family. Marie’s mother Frances Kohut, 95, passed away on July 17. Her funeral service was July 21 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Temple. Our thoughts and prayers are with Marie and her family.

Special thanks to American Impressionist Henrietta Milan, center, of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth for the beautiful paintings that she gifted to SPJST Home Office that will be displayed in the front lobby. Sister Henrietta is pictured with her husband Jerry Milan, who serves as president of Lodge 154 and president of the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center. The painting above is a 30 x 48 copy of an original by Moravian artist Joža Úprka. The painting is displayed on the wall behind the desk of Receptionist Tamara Gettys, pictured far left. Henrietta and Jerry will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on September 15, 2017. A self-taught artist, Henrietta uses only a palette knife to create canvases rich with texture. The viewer wishes to touch the painting’s surface to “read” the almost sculptural quality of the paint. Her fascination of light and color are used to create beautiful paintings which are filled with life and movement in the tradition of the impressionist masters. The Fort Worth Milan Gallery is Henrietta’s home gallery. She paints from photographs and images she creates. Henrietta’s work is known worldwide with paintings in Indonesia, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, New Zealand, and Japan. Giving back to her community is something Henrietta feels strongly about. She is personally active with several charitable organizations, and gives to countless others by donating paintings, lithographs, and note cards. Her generous donations, in the tens of thousands of dollars each year, benefit local, regional, and national organizations annually. In 1995, because of her charitable contributions, she was recognized by the mayor, senator, and congressman of her hometown with a day named in her honor. BELOW: The SPJST Home Office lobby, located at 520 North Main Street in Temple, Texas, features two of Henrietta’s paintings. Thank you, Sister Milan, for generously sharing your gift with all who visit the SPJST Home Office.

I want to say how much I enjoy getting the Vestnik via email. I use a desktop computer so it is easy to read, and any picture or article can be made larger.
Articles are clear and picture quality is better. I would encourage anyone who wants to continue getting the Vestnik to use the email option. Save a tree/paper and money, too. Barbara Zabcik Docekal Lodge 130, Dallas —SPJST—

Lodge 18, Elgin welcomes members, friends at Fritz Hodde dance
It’s hard to believe that half of this year is gone! We had a great meeting. It was short and to the point, and we were done in 40 minutes. We had time to visit and enjoy blueberry muffins and cantaloupe. What a great dance we had on Sunday, July 16, 2017, with Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six! When we started, I was afraid the attendance was going to be so small. But people kept coming in, and we had a pretty good crowd. Fritz and the gang do a great job. We had John and Betty Schwartz from Wall, Texas! They enjoy Fritz and the gang. Fritz played in Wall, and that is how they are familiar with his music. We had Edward Merka and Johnny Vrabel celebrating birthdays. Dominic and Mary Ann Dobias celebrated their 55th anniversary. We enjoy having groups celebrate different occasions here at the hall. As always, the kitchen had great hamburgers, tacos, and pie. We had some air conditioning problems, but that was taken care of by our trustees. Thanks, guys! You do a great job keeping this hall going. We would love to have some of the charter members come to our meetings. Come see what is happening here at the hall.

Lodge 38, Kovar member Victoria Vydrzal Achieves Grand Age of 96
SPJST congratulates Sister Victoria Vydrzal of Lodge 38, Kovar, who celebrated her 96th birthday on Friday, July 28, 2017. As such, Sister Victoria is entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments.
Sister Victoria was born to Charles and Sofie Vyvjala in Smithville, Texas, on July 28, 1921. She had two brothers, Charles Vyvjala, Jr. and Alfred Vyvjala, both now deceased. She grew up during the Great Depression. Times were difficult back then, but she had wonderful parents, and they always managed. In the 1930s and 1940s, her daddy served as secretary/treasurer for SPJST Lodge 38, Kovar. People would come to their house to pay their dues, and it was a busy place. She remembers her family going to the Kovar Hall and her daddy selling chicken salad sandwiches. Victoria married Stan Vydrzal on December 6, 1947. They were blessed with four children - Barbara Dean and spouse Gary of Beaumont, Gene Grohman and spouse Jo Ann of Smithville, Billy Vydrzal and spouse Nancy of Smithville, and Leroy Vydrzal, now deceased. Her husband Stan was also a member of SPJST Lodge 38, Kovar. He served as secretary-treasurer until his untimely death in 1958. All four of the couple’s children have been lifelong members, and they attended all the functions and picnics at Kovar over the years. Those were fun times, Victoria says. Victoria worked at Camp Swift during World War II and for the Se-
lective Service Draft Board, IRS, and the US Postal Service. During this time, she received a business degree from Nixon Clay College in Austin. Her last job with the Post Office in Smithville was her favorite. She was the first female rural route carrier to ever hold that position in Smithville. She loved it and worked until the age of 67. She said, “It is amazing how a little letter can make such a difference in someone’s life.” Sister Victoria’s greatest accomplishments - with the Lord’s help - were raising her four wonderful children. She has always been close to all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She always loved sharing all the holidays with them, cooking and baking homemade bread, kolaches, and sausage wraps. Later in life, her special pecan pie was always a request. “I am really blessed to be receiving this honor,” Victoria says. “I thank the Lord for allowing her to live such a long, rewarding life.” Victoria’s father was also recognized as a Grand Age of 96 honoree in 1982. Victoria loves reading the newspaper and looks forward to every issue of the Věstník. She particularly enjoys the stories by so many of our veterans who share their stories. She is very patriotic and so grateful to live in this wonderful country; she will never forget those who made this life possible for us all. We congratulate Sister Victoria Vydrzal on attaining the grand age of 96. Thank you, Sister Victoria, for your devotion to SPJST for all these years. —SPJST—

Ennis Sewing Circle
Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, July 13, 2017, in the Sokol Club Room. Several of us met around 9:30 a.m. to set up tables for our white elephant sale and show-and-tell. As everyone arrived, they displayed their sale items and show-and-tell items. Everyone was visiting and looking at things they wanted to buy. At 11 a.m., President Irene used her gavel to start the sale. We had many nice things, vegetables, and plants. I had my two greatgranddaughters Sarah and Gracie; they had already decided what they wanted. After everyone had purchased what they wanted, President Irene announced that what was left was half price. Everything went really well. I don’t think anyone had to take anything home - how nice! We had 22 members and four guests - Liz Krajca, Sarah and Gracie Morales, and Mary Nell Sladecek’s granddaughter. I’m sorry I didn’t get her name. Dorothy Kudrna and Ginny Svehlak volunteered to go pick up the pizza. When they returned, everyone was hungry and ready to eat. It was so good. We had green salad, Blue Bell ice cream, and cookies. After lunch, we had the raffle drawing. The first place winner for the quilt was Lillie Macalik. We were happy for her as she is our new member from Dallas who is a very good quilter. Other winners were Dorothy Prachyl (won twice), Martha Ritchey, Liz Krajca, Sandy Podhrasky, Pat Fowler, and Mary Nell Sladecek. I think the winners were happy; we had many nice prizes. We want to thank Henrietta Milan and Gay Williams for donating many items for the raffle and sale. It was much appreciated. President Irene called the meeting to order, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. The “Our Father” was recited for Stanley Honza, George Joe Patrick, Ardie Honza, and our sick members. Secretary Ann read the minutes of the last meeting, and Treasurer Dolores Vrana gave her report. Both were approved as read. Ginny Svehlak read several funny stories that we all enjoyed. Sunshine Lady Dorothy announced July birthday celebrants - Vickie Vlk and Dorothy Bobalek. “Happy Birthday” was sung by all. Quilt scheduler Pat Fowler announced the schedule. In August, we will quilt the Christmas quilt; Maggie Holy’s quilt in September; Junior Sokol

Karen Haskovec stopped by and took some of the material that was donated to the Circle to mail to the “Critters Against Cancer,” which makes stuffed animals and gives them to cancer patients. President Irene announced she had
some bad news and some good news. The bad news is that our Secretary Ann is giving up her position due to her husband’s health. The good news is we have a new secretary - Sandy Pochobradsky. We want to thank Dorothy Kudrna for volunteering to be in charge of kitchen supplies. Ann was the 50-50 dollar winner. We were all happy to see longtime member Bertha Podhrasky, whom we have not
seen in a long time. She looked great, and we all enjoyed visiting with her. President Irene announced the next meeting will be August 10. We will quilt, have lunch and the meeting, and the 50-50 dollar game.
Other News - Show-and-Tell President Irene showed a unique round bowl with thin cloth top from Thailand, and an antique handmade brandy bottle and a holder from the

Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point Supports Oliver Family Benefit
Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point was proud to support a benefit for the Oliver family on Sunday, July 23, 2017, at Bo’s Barn and Dancehall in Temple. Bell County citizens and the Morgan’s Point community were saddened by a tragic boating accident that occurred on the evening of Friday, June 23, 2017, at Belton Lake. Four-year-old Kaitlyn Oliver lost her life, and her father Patrick Oliver lost both his legs in a brave attempt to
save his daughter’s life. The physical and emotional loss was too much for Patrick to bear, and he succumbed to his injuries and passed away on July 6. A big thanks to Deb Swift-Alejandro, Cha Cha Herrington, and Danny McDonald who organized the July 23 benefit that raised more than $23,000. Thanks to all who volunteered at and supported the event. Organizer Deb Swift-Alejandro shared this message:

sound man for many bands and traveled all over. Liz Krajca showed a cookbook that the Junior Sokol Gym class is selling and white house shoes with Sokol on top, which was really pretty. Dorothy Prachyl had a bottle of water from the spring that runs under the home that the Blessed Mother lived in until her death in Ephesus, Turkey. Her son and his wife brought it to her. Libbie Vrla had a beautiful oval picture of our grandparents Frank and Marie Patril; it was their wedding picture. Sandy Pochobradsky showed her wedding dress that her mother made for her out of parachute nylon material. Then Sandy’s daughter wore it to prom when in school then her granddaughter also wore it to a school activity. They took some ruffles off for one of the activities. She also had pictures of all three who wore the dress - three generations. I want to apologize to Pat Fowler. Last month, I forgot to write about her grandson Justin Mraz. For an Eagle Scout project, Justin cleaned and painted an old mailbox in which to discard old flags. It is really pretty. I have seen it. It is on the front porch of the meeting house for the scouts - across the street from the First United Methodist Church on Sherman. If ever you’re that way, look for it. I want to thank everyone for coming, for bringing all your sale items and your show-and-tell items. It was a great day, enjoyed by all. It was good to see everyone, and we hope you come again on August 10. We will quilt, have lunch and the meeting, and play the 50-50 dollar game. Take care, stay cool, and hope to see you. In Memory of Johnnie I. Krajca
Johnnie I. Krajca, age 84, passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2107, on his farm. Johnnie was born on November 7, 1932, to John J. and Julia C. (Zissa) Krajca. He grew up in the Creechville and Telico communities and graduated from St. John High School in 1950. He served his country proudly during the Korean conflict from 1953 to 1955 and came home to marry his sweetheart Margaret Johnnie I. Krajca Ann (Martinek) on August 11, 1956. To this union were born their four daughters - Rita, Marlene, Laure, and Allis. Johnnie was a member of St. John Catholic Church, and a lifelong member of local fraternal lodges - SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis; KJT No. 35; RVOS Lodge No. 51; American Legion; Sokol; Knights of Columbus; VFW; and WFLA. He also was a sales representative for SPJST life insurance and RVOS home owners insurance. Most notably, “Johnnie I” will be remembered as a polka DJ on KBEC radio station bringing joy to listeners for 48 and one-half years. Johnnie was very proud of his Czech heritage; he was an avid lover of polka music and a fraternalist at heart. He en-
joyed seeing people happy, loved a good joke, a good beer, and a good bargain. Most of all, he loved his family; his “pretty grandmas,” his “pretty girls,” and his “málí šívák” grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Julia Krajca; and son-inlaw Steve Clark. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Margaret; daughters Rita Holland and husband Kenneth, Marlene Clark, Laure Krajca and husband Greg Crow, and Allis Droste and husband Tom; grandchildren Brian Holland, April Holland and Clint Wyatt, Jake Holland and Jessica, Miranda Henson and Grant, Raychel Walker and Austin, Madeline and Erica Clark, Jerrod Ryan and Sarah, Blake Ryan and Haley, and Brandon and Amanda Droste; greatgrandchildren Austen, Madison and Maison Holland, Luke and June Holland, Garrett Wyatt, Beau, Winnie, and Clark Henson, and Kalynn Ryan. Visitation was held on Thursday, July 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. in J.E. Keever Mortuary Chapel in Ennis with rosary at 7 p.m. Mass of the Christian burial was on Friday, July 21 at 10 a.m. in St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church with Father John Dick as celebrant. Interment followed in St. Joseph Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary, Inc. Serving as pallbearers were grandsons Brian Holland, Jake Holland, Jerrod Ryan, Blake Ryan, Brandon Droste, Grant Henson, Austin Walker, and Clint Wyatt. Memorial donations in honor of Johnnie to SPJST Lodge 25 Memorial Fund would be appreciated. Memorials may be sent to SPJST Lodge 25, P. O. Box 129, Ennis, Texas 75120. National Honey Bee Day: August 19
Honey bees are as important today as they ever. National Honey Bee Day was started by beekeepers to build community awareness of the bee industry, through education and promotion. Over the last several years the honey bee population has been in a decline due to a host of reasons including disease and pesticides. This decline impacts local agriculture and many backyard gardens. Beekeepers are vital for large scale food production and neighborhood pollination. The local ecosystem of food production for wild animals and birds is also dependent on this same pollination. Beekeepers help fill the void with their honey bees to help grow and create food for people and food for livestock.
Even if you are a non-beekeeper you can still help support, help, and save the honey bee. (1) Support local beekeepers by buying locally produced honey and other beehive products. (2) Educate yourself on the dangers and risk with home pesticides and chemicals. (3) Get to know the honey bee. Unlike other stinging insects, honey bees are manageable, and non-aggressive. (4) Plant a bee friendly garden with native and nectar producing flowers. Pick plants that can grow without extra water and chemicals. (5) Consider allowing a beekeeper to maintain beehives on your property. Knowing some facts on honey bees could help solve the population decline problem - one bee at a time.

Interstate 35 construction is causing a bit of confusion on how to get to the Mayborn Convention Center. Please plan ahead, leave earlier, and give yourself plenty of time to travel to State YAD at the Mayborn Center! Northbound I-35 traffic will use Exit 303A - Industrial Drive to reach the Mayborn. Stay on the IH 35 frontage road thru the stop sign. Keep right and exit into the Center’s entrance on Bellaire. Southbound will use exit 304 and stay straight on the access road thru the traffic light and continue to the loop back north at Industrial Drive. After you cross the bridge and enter the northbound frontage road, you will need to get into the far right lane. Keep to the right to the entrance to the Center. The new I35 Access road northbound has now opened which will be the road to take to Bellaire Dr. and the entrance to the Center.

Rádi takové osobnosti přivítáme a zvláště v tom případě, kdy projevují neobvyklé znalosti koření a jiných věcí.
Další odměnu získal Roman Hladký (jméno psáno Hlatký), Tracy Helm, Matthew Sherman a Margerethe Unger Za vynikající práci při vyučování obdržely Samantha Farmer, Irielle Wesley a Margerethe Unger.

Operatér použil upravený přístroj opatřený světlem a kamerou a dalšími lékařskými přístroji.

Czech Deacons Visit Temple
Three transitional deacons from the Czech Republic were welcomed to Temple on Friday, July 21, 2017. They are staying in Texas for about four weeks. Taylor Czech Chorus presents scholarship
Kierstin Rosipal was presented with the 2017 Taylor Czech Chorus Scholarship on Monday, July 17, 2017. She is the daughter of Kristi and Christopher Rosipal of Carrollton, Texas, and the granddaughter of Taylor Czech Chorus member Eileen Rosipal. Kierstin has severe audible and visual dyslexia which required many extra hours of work and study, beyond that of her classmates. Despite the setbacks, she recently graduated from Hebron High School in Carrollton and achieved a 3.87 unweighted GPA. Kierstin plans to attend Marshalltown Community College in Iowa and major in construction management. Taylor Czech Chorus members were treated with rosettes that were made by Kierstin with the help of her grandmother, Eileen. Rosettes are a thin, cookie-like, deepfried pastry topped with icing or powdered sugar. This traditional Czech pastry is made by using intricately designed irons. Seated are Eileen Rosipal (grandmother), Kierstin Rosipal, and Lodge 18, Elgin member Diane Volek (director), along with fellow Taylor Czech Chorus members. —Submitted by Monica Stojaník of Lodge 20, Granger

—SPJST—

by Numbers -
Lesson “9”
ello and welcome to Czech by Numbers, Radio Prague’s Czech language series, which looks at Czech numbers and their use in idioms and in everyday speech. This edition is about the number nine in Czech.
The Czech word for nine is devět, which sounds completely different from the English but is almost identical in all Slavonic languages. Nine is considered to be a lucky or magic number in many cultures and appears in various fairy tales and popular sayings. For example, cats are supposed t o have nine lives kočky mají devět životů in both t h e English-speaking world and the Czech Republic. In English, some children’s stories begin with the phrase - over the hills and far away - and Czech ones start with za devatero horami a devatero řekami over nine mountains and across nine rivers. The word devatero is just another way of saying devět - nine. Another idiom using the word is devatero řemesel - nine trades, typically used in the saying devatero řemesel a

desátá bída, literally - nine trades and the tenth being poverty. The expression is used roughly in the same sense as the English - jack of all trades, master of none. That is, it’s better to do one thing well than many things sloppily. Another example of the importance of nine in folklore is the Czech name of the flower butterbur - devětsil - which translates as - nine strengths.

The ordinal number is devátý for the masculine and devátá for the feminine. Standing on its own, the latter is almost always used to mean Symphony No. 9 by Beethoven. That’s it for this lesson. We’ll be back with number ten. Till then, na shledanou, bye-bye. ~ Pavla Horáková http://www.radio.cz/en/section/abc/czech-by-numbers-nine 27-05-2006
