PJST crowned its new 20172018 State Royalty on Saturday, August 5 at the Mayborn Center in Temple. Congrats to all participants! What a fierce competition! These young ladies and gentlemen brought it! I would not have wanted to serve as a judge! Next week’s Věstník will feature all of the State Youth Achievement Day results. Speaking of judging . . . I had the honor of judging the National Miss CSA pageant on Friday, August 4 in Austin. CSA is a fraternal organization - like SPJST - that is based in Illinois. I enjoyed dinner with the young ladies. They then spoke about a subject of interest and answered questions from the judges. Judging was a tough job because all of the contestants were talented and deserving of the title. Congrats to Sydney Rieckhoff who was crowned 2017 Miss CSA!

Prior to the contest, Lodge 17, New Tabor Beseda Dancers performed for the attendees. Great job, youth!

Member appreciates scholarship

First of all, I would like to apologize for such a late thank you letter upon receiving your scholarship. It is totally inexcusable for the time to get out of hand that you receive this deserving letter long overdue for your donation towards my education. Furthermore, I would like to sincerely say now that I’m honored to be a recipient of your scholarship. It truly shows your kind heart and willingness to give. And I hope that one day I can give back to the community in the form of a scholarship as you have. I’m going to attend the main campus of Tarleton State in Stephenville and major in economics with a minor in finance. I would like to wholeheartedly thank you again for your investment in me for my educational purposes. I hope to keep

in touch with you on how I’m doing. Much obliged, Glenn Conover Lodge 73, Seymour —SPJST—

Member shares gratitude

Dear SPJST, I am writing to thank you for your generous $1,000 undergraduate scholarship. I was very happy and appreciative to learn that I was selected as one of the recipients of your scholarship. I am a construction management major with a minor in agricultural business. I plan to pursue a career in construction when I graduate from Sam Houston State University. I am currently a junior and plan to graduate in the fall of 2018. Thanks to you, I am one step closer to that goal. By awarding me the undergraduate scholarship, you have decreased my financial burden, which allows me to focus more on the most important aspect of school, learning. Your generosity has inspired me to help others and give back to the community. I hope one day, I will be able to help students achieve their goals just as you have helped me. ENTERPRISE RISK MANAGEMENT (ERM) Chief Financial Officer Mikeska reported the three subcommittees and the ERM Committee met on Monday, July 17. He proceeded to give the following ERM Committee report to the Supreme Lodge.

Chief Financial Officer Mikeska reported the Underwriting Risk subcommittee did a very thorough job to see if our marketing strategy will meet our needs. The committee decided the product pricing needs to be re-priced using the 2017 CSO tables with the assistance of our actuary at Allen Bailey and Associates. The re-pricing of our products is necessary because they are not loaded to account for the correct non-contractual expenditures and new mortality tables. At the present pricing, our certificates are loaded for a $10 non-contractual benefits cost but should be loaded for about $79 per certificate.

The Operational Risk subcommittee reported several points to discuss. One of the biggest concerns is the decline of membership and number of certificates. Some losses are due to the natural age progression of our membership resulting in death claims. There was discussion of hiring general agents of P&C companies to sell insurance for us and then bring the new members into the fraternal community to teach them fraternalism. Also discussed was increasing our profits through new marketing strategies to sell more insurance and annuities to be able to fund fraternal programs.

The Asset Liability Management subcommittee discussed the positive progress since the last cash flow testing was done September 30, 2016, showed significant improvement. There are several reasons for the improvement: purchase of higher quality investments, amendment of the IPS to reduce the amount of single issuer purchase to 12.5 percent of the total portfolio down from 15 percent. crease and disintermediation. In the event of a rate increase, we could be subject to $125 million of annuity money that is out of penalty phase. We have structured the laddering of the portfolio to be able to reinvest some $40 million over a two-year period to increase our payout rates.

The cash flow test performed by our actuary revealed there is no need to set up additional reserves; however, in reviewing the non-contractual benefits, they discovered SPJST spends 18 percent of their income on these benefits. That number is much higher when compared to fellow fraternal organizations. The test also revealed if we were only investing in NAIC 1 bonds, we would not be able to support our special needs appetite for spending. Our amount to spend on non-contractual benefits would be reduced by $1 million. Recess was taken from 2 until 2:10 p.m.

PARKWAY ADVISORS President/CEO Theron Holladay visited the meeting and shared his report of the audit of the SPJST portfolio as requested by Chief Financial Officer Mikeska.

There was extensive discussion relative to his detailed report. After conducting his analysis, Chief Financial Officer Mikeska reported that Mr. Holladay had a proposal to serve as our investment advisor, and the Supreme Lodge heard his proposal.

HERMANN SONS LIFE President/CEO Buddy Preuss visited the meeting and shared the differences between our governing board structure and theirs. He stated that there are 22 percent of fraternal organizations no longer in business, and some of that is due to the fraternal governance changes being implemented. There was a lengthy discussion on the responsibility of the board of directors and officers in their role of fiduciary and strategic duties.

Recess for the day was taken at 5:40 p.m. until 8 a.m. on July 19.

Supreme Lodge Chairman Victorick called the meeting to order, and Chief Financial Officer Mikeska led the opening prayer.

SERVICE AWARD President Vanicek was recognized for his faithful service of 25 years to SPJST at an event the previous evening. President Vanicek stated he has enjoyed his years with SPJST, and it has been very good for his family to be a part of such a great organization.

CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER’S REPORT ENC Chief Financial Officer Mikeska continued with his report. He updated the Supreme Lodge on several projects going on at the ENC and further projects in need. CFO Mikeska is told there is a need for housing for the assistant camp director. The discussion led to the need of a master plan for the facility and the possibility for the need to retain an architect to develop a site plan for future expansion as well.

UNIVERSAL LIFE Chief Financial Officer Mikeska discussed the need to identify and service our Universal Life Certificates which will terminate due to inadequate premium and cash value due to various circumstances.

All officers were present for the meeting, and we were all particularly happy to see Secretary Carmon Babina. She has been having some health issues, and she seems to be on the mend now. Our prayers are continually with you, Carmon, for continued good health. Scholarship talk was thrown around for a full discussion for all to participate in. ribbon or not, remember, in the book of District Two, you are all winners, and I am so proud of each of you! You have made so many proud of you—your parents, family, leaders, and friends. You deserve to give yourself a pat on your back. There were so many awesome pies. Each year, youth donate their desserts to a silent auction, and the first place dessert in each category goes into a live auction. Thank you, Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek for your great skills of auctioneering! Thank you to the many of you who bid on the pies. First place winners and their buyers were youth Sebastian Goodman (20) and buyer Bridget Bohac (20); youth Ariana Federle (47) and buyer Edwin Pechal (47); youth Meghan Malcik (24) and buyer District Two Director Pospisil (29); and youth Nash Campbell (24) and buyer District Two President Rita Spinn (80). The silent and live auctions brought in a total of $878. Your support is greatly appreciated - especially with the big smile from all who participated. Thank you to all who bid on the pies including those in the silent auction. Proceeds will cover the cost of our campers’ online registration, camp snacks, and other activities. A big thank you to everyone who made this day possible. You are an awesome group of friends and family. To each of you who attended, you showed your love and support toward each youth, which means the world to not only them but also to me. Thank you again! Cristy, Amber, and I thank you for allowing your child to be a part of our lives. Fraternally, Patsy Koslovsky District Two Youth Counselor —SPJST—

BENEVOLENCE

ROČNÍK 105 CISLO 33 - Czech

W

by Numbers -

Lesson “10”

elcome to Czech by Numbers, Radio Prague’s language series in which we look at Czech numbers and their use in everyday speech. In this lesson, we will explore the number 10 - deset.

The sound of the word is quite different from the English, but again very similar to other Slavonic languages. The figure of 10 is desítka, a word which in Czech is most often associated with 10-degree beer, usually one of the two varieties produced by a particular brewery. A desítka has a lower alcohol content than a dvanáctka, a 12-degree brew. Another word derived from the Czech word for number 10 - deset - is desatero. With a small “d,” it simply means a group of 10 objects. With a capital “d,” it means the Ten Commandments or Desatero božích přikázání in full. On the other hand, desaterák is a 10pointer, a stag with 10-pointed antlers. Desetikoruna is a 10-crown piece, but don’t get confused by the slang expression for it pětka - a fiver. The illogical name is a result of historic development of the Czech currency. One-tenth is desetina. It sounds very similar to the adjective desetinná which means decimal, as in the decimal point, which, to make it more complicated, is actually a comma in Czech. So once again, the decimal point in Czech is desetinná čárka.

Staying with maths, the decimal system in which most of us count in our everyday life is called desítková soustava. And in sports, desetiboj is the decathlon. This is all for lesson number 10 desátá lekce, literally the 10th lesson. We’ll be back with more Czech numbers. Till then, goodbye - na shledanou.
