Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund established by SPJST Foundation
The devastation experienced by Texans living along the Texas Gulf Coast and many points inland reminds us of the fragile existence that we share with our environment. In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, SPJST members and others have been contacting the SPJST Home Office in Temple wanting to give financial assistance — under the auspices of SPJST. The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund has been organized and will be managed by t h e SPJST Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, located within the confines of the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street in Temple, Texas. Relief efforts are currently underway and are expected to continue for months if not years. A Hurricane Harvey Relief Committee will be established to identify projects needing attention and submitting requests to the SPJST Foundation for the disbursement of funds contributed to the Hurricane Har-
vey Relief Fund. As Texans work to rebuild their lives post Hurricane Harvey, it is important that SPJST — through the SPJST Foundation — do all it can to help them get back on their feet. The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund is being organized in a fashion similar to that of the West Benevolence Fund which sought to address a multitude of needs and projects promulgated as a result of the massive April 18, 2013, fertilizer explosion which rocked the Central Texas City of West. Checks may be issued to the “SPJST Foundation” and designated in the memo portion of the check to be directed to the “Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.” Donations to the relief fund are tax-deductible. Checks can be mailed to PO Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503. —SPJST— Hurricane Harvey hit the Texas coast on Friday, August 25, and its devastating effects touched many members, including Lodge 162, Iowa Colony Secretary Geri Frank whose two-story home, left, was flooded. We extend our thoughts and prayers to all members affected by this catastrophic event.

W
hat an emotional week it has been with Hurricane Harvey destroying the cities and communities on and near the Texas coast and along its path. It has been frightening and extremely destructive. Our beautiful state has experienced one of its worst times since its existence. Mother Nature delivered a horrific storm. But yet we are seeing neighbors helping neighbors; countless individuals loading up their boats, risking their lives to rescue people stranded in flooded homes and high water; and people from other states heading to Texas to lend a helping hand. I felt helpless this past week. One of our members shared this message with me early in the week: “At this point, I think the best thing to do is pray. Pray for the rain to stop. Pray for the water to go down. Pray for all these people who have lost everything.” So I along with millions of others across the world are praying for people we know and families we’ve never met. Sure, these natural catastrophes are horrible, but they don’t destroy us - they make us stronger and come together as one. We are #TexasStrong. Our hearts and our thoughts go out to everyone who has been affected by this catastrophic event.
Hurricane Harvey Aftermath In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, SPJST Home Office acknowl-
edges that there may be mail delays as well as personal challenges affecting some of our members, During this period, we are ready and willing to extend 30-day grace periods for premium payments. Please contact the Accounting Department for more information.
Thanks, Henrietta Rosenbaum! A big SPJST thank you to Henrietta Rosenbaum of Lodge 28, East Bernard! Henrietta sent a note stating that she recently found several old Vestniks dating back from as far as 1936 in a cedar chest. District Five Director Bradley Stavinoha picked up the Věstníks and delivered them to the Home Office where we have archived them. Thank you, Sister Rosenbaum, for your generosity.

State FAC shares September fraternal updates
Our thoughts and prayers remain with those who must now focus on rebuilding homes and lives following the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. May we also be ever thankful for all that we have been given in our wonderful life. Please know that you — our members in this hard hit region of Texas — will be in our thoughts and prayers in the days and weeks ahead.
End of Summer Getaway Recap The 11th annual Corpus Christi Summer Getaway goes into the history books as another great fraternal event! Thank you to all SPJST members who came out and enjoyed fraternalism at its best. It was so very wonderful to see members of all ages celebrating together. A special thank you to Lodge 79, Corpus Christi members for helping to make this event such a success. Friday evening was our welcome aloha party, and everyone enjoyed music, contests, food, and fun. Saturday morning started off early with the horseshoe tournament, sand sculpture contest, sack races, and egg toss contest. It was enjoyed by all. In the afternoon, there was a Progressive 42 domino tournament in the Kokomo Room and Bunco in the main event area. Saturday evening ended with the awards ceremony, king and queen contest, Chris Rybak performing, and dancing the night away. Hail to King Dennis Hermis of Lodge 142, Houston and Queen Christine Festa of Lodge 47, Seaton for your spirited presence on Saturday night. Keep an eye out in the Vestnik for exciting adventures for next year.

Registration was from 1 to 2 p.m. The officers started with the Pledge of Allegiance and had copies of the minutes from the spring meeting for members to look over before the meeting started. This was all done in a matter of 20 minutes. District Two Fraternal Activities Coordinator Ruth Hanusch and other officers drew door prizes. The fun then began! District Two had two general stores, Plink-O board, cake walk, and egg races. Everyone young and old had a great time. The meeting was adjourned at 4:30 p.m., and everyone enjoyed the meal of chicken spaghetti, green beans, salad, and desserts. Thank you to Lodge 24, Cyclone for providing a wonderful meal. Grandparents Day is September 10 Grandparents Day is the first Sunday after Labor Day. This is a day to remember those who are special in our daily lives. Everyone is somebody’s grandchild and can be involved in the observance of this wonderful day of celebration. In 1970, a West Virginia housewife, Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, initiated a campaign to set aside a special day just for grandparents. Through concerted efforts on the part of civic, business, church, and political leaders, this campaign expanded statewide. Senator Jennings Randolph (D-WV) was especially instrumental in the project. The first Grandparents Day was proclaimed in 1973 in West Virginia by Governor Arch Moore. Also in 1973, Senator Randolph introduced a Grandparents Day resolution in the United States Senate. The resolution languished in committee. Mrs. McQuade and her team turned to the media to garner support. They also began contacting governors, senators, and congressmen in every state. They sent letters to churches, businesses, and numerous national organizations interested in senior citizens. In 1978, five years after its West Virginia inception, the United States Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. The proclamation was signed by President Jimmy Carter. Today this event is observed by millions throughout the United States.

Lodge 15, Buckholts appreciates Doug Williams
President Mary Rodriguez called the meeting to order at 6 p.m. We met in our lodge building. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Dorothy Tomascik followed by a moment of silence in memory of departed members. All officers were present. Treasurer Sandie Fischer gave us the financial report, and it was approved as read. In old business, we decided not to schedule our next fundraiser meal until October when the weather will be cooler. In new business, I regret to report Doug Williams is resigning as vice president due to his health and not being able to attend meetings. His permanent address now is William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home in Temple. Doug served as our president for may years and did such a great job. He spent many volunteer hours. He later served as vice president. We appreciate all his years of service to the lodge and all he did to keep the lodge active. We really miss him and Virginia - both are such faithful members. Scott Brandon is the new vice president. I know he will do a great job. We appreciate him agreeing to serve. President Rodriguez had arranged to have some inside painting to our lodge building. She was anxious to show us what a difference it made. It really brightened things up; it looks really nice. We discussed having some different fundraisers a little later on. Sandie Fischer brought a delicious roast dinner, and I shared some of my birthday cake. We had a nice meeting. Scott made a motion that we adjourn, seconded by Mary. Motion carried.

SPJST youth to perform at Kolache Festival in Caldwell this Saturday, September 9
Burleson County’s Beseda Dancers Keep Czech Traditions Alive
Burleson County Tribune Thursday, August 24, 2017 Reprinted with permission.
There are dance steps that are just about dancing. And there are those with a more enduring value - preserving a cherished, ancient tradition - and teaching youth to never forget who they are and what their ancestors did for them. The Beseda Dance, a long-standing Czech tradition, is taught at SPJST lodges around the state, but maybe not with quite the fervor of those in Burleson County. The Beseda Dancers of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor and Lodge 9, Snook are featured annually at the Kolache Festival in Caldwell and will be again this year on Saturday, September 9. Onlookers continue to be amazed at the intricacies of the dances - and that Burleson County’s youth so enthusiastically participate. As with the baking competition and with polka music, younger Texans of Czech descent are holding onto their heritage. That passion keeps the festival going from one generation to the next. The Beseda Dance represents dances from the seven provinces of the Czech lands in years past. Susan Skrabanek, a longtime SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor member and youth Beseda Dance leader, says the seven distinct dances preserve the tradition from each of those areas. It also teaches the youth various dance steps like the heel and toe polka and basic waltz steps while incorporating the Czech language. For Skrabanek and other youth leaders, there is a lot of work involved in keeping the youth involved. How much practice is involved? “This varies by the number of new dancers each year. When I start with a
brand new set of eight dancers, teaching the dance takes anywhere from four to seven practices, each at least two to three hours long,” Skrabanek said. They must then practice the dance three to four times in each practice to get them ready to perform in public. “As far as practicing on an ongoing basis, we generally will have a couple of practices prior to any performance, especially if there’s been more than a couple of months between performances or we have to switch dancers around,” she said. When the dancers appeared on KBTX in the spring, Skrabanek had her concerns. “We hadn’t danced since October, and at our practice the day before, it was like they never danced before,” she recalled. “I freaked out, but once the cameras were rolling, they did great.” Skrabanek and the county’s other youth leaders understand that the Beseda Dance is special. And it has helped the festival endure through the years. “We are so proud to have been a part of the festival throughout the years,” she said. “I know that former dancers love to come and watch, and it is always a crowd pleaser for those who have never seen it.”
And there is a group of former dancers that are talking about getting together and performing at this year’s festival, she said. Parents and youth agree that the dance is special. Mabrey Petty Dowell, mother of Maylee Dowell, said her daughter enjoys the Beseda “more than any kid I have ever seen!” “She looks forward to it each and every time they dance,” she said. “I think what she enjoys most about it is getting to dance with Tabor (her brother). Getting to dance the Beseda is her favorite part of the Kolache Festival for sure.” Maylee has cerebral palsy, but she does not let that keep her from the joy of dancing. Macy and Dillon Narro, a brother and sister, also enjoy the dance. Macy said she likes it because “I get to perform in front of a lot of people and travel many places.” “It is fun! I also like to see may Gamma and Granny smile when we perform. I especially like performing in front of a large crowd at the Kolache Festival,” she said. Dillon Narro said he enjoys it because it is a way to preserve the Czech heritage. “I have been dancing since the age of six, and this is my last year as I am
a senior,” Narro said. “I will miss performing all around the state, but especially at the Kolache Festival.” And he is grateful to his aunt Susan Skrabanek for “teaching me such a time honored tradition.” Cobey McCuller says the dancing and the festival have helped him learn more about his Czech heritage, and he enjoys seeing all the people. Macey McCuller also enjoys the dancing and festival’s role in promoting the heritage, the community participation, and the vendors. For Chandler Sebesta, he will always remember “all the fun places I have gone to dance.” Tabor Dowell says he enjoys going to all the different places to dance like the state capitol. “Who can say they have danced in the rotunda of our state capitol?” he says. Madi Kellum said her favorite part of the festival is “dancing the Beseda and eating kolaches.” “The Beseda is an old dance that has been passed down through generations of SPJST, and I think it is a great thing to learn. It adds another interesting thing I know about Czech culture.” The Beseda Dancers from New Tabor and Snook’s SPJST lodges will perform at this year’s Kolache Festival opening ceremonies on the main stage. —SPJST—

Fun, Food, Fellowship at St. Monica’s Catholic Church Picnic By Justin Everett of Lodge 24, Cyclone
On Sunday, August 20, 2017, St. Monica’s Catholic Church held its annual homecoming picnic in Cameron. The picnic was a big hit, and everyone had a fantastic time. I loved how the picnic was held inside of the cool, air conditioned parish hall. The summer weather here in Texas is very brutal, and air conditioning is definitely a necessity not a privilege. The picnic was the perfect place to have the three big F’s—fun, food, and fellowship. The day started off with a beautiful morning mass. Afterwards, there were plenty of activities going on for all ages to enjoy from carnival games to a live auction. The picnic plates were out of this world and represented home-cooking at its finest. The barbecue was tender and moist. That ice cold, sweet tea washed it down smoothly.
The highlight of the picnic had to be the live entertainment provided by The Majek Orchestra. The Majeks have been playing polka music in Texas since 1897 and are one of the many pioneers in TexCzech music. Even though the original members of the band have passed on, their descendants continue to keep the band going and carry on the Majek legacy. It was such a treat to have the Majeks come all the way from Corpus Christi and perform at the picnic. The band played many polka and waltz tunes that everybody loved. I loved seeing Austin Majek playing his guitar on stage with the band. It is such a beautiful sight to see young kids who have a passion for playing polka music. The Majeks also used to have battle dances with Vrazels’ Polka Band. One of the most memorable battle dances had to be in LEFT PHOTO: Justin Everett, left, of Lodge 24, Cyclone presents Alfred Vrazel of Lodge 15, Buckholts with an outstanding polka musician award. Elgin back in 1990. The Vrazels, Majeks, and Fritz Hodde and The Fabulous Six all battled each other and had a huge jam session with all three bands playing together. Founding Vrazels’ Polka Band members Alfred and Anton Vrazel joined the Majeks on stage at the picnic to play a few songs together. My grandfather Anton had no problem borrowing Martha Majek’s accordion and squeezing away. Alfred still was also able to recreate the Vrazel magic by squeezing away on his button accordion. The picnic was a great success, and much appreciation goes out to everyone who attended and helped out. Be on the lookout for more polka music events coming up soon. —SPJST—

Ennis Sewing Circle
Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, August 10, 2017, in the Sokol Club Room. President Irene and Ann Clagett arrival early. I want to thank them again for arriving early as I was late, due to that I still had Sarah and didn’t get there till later. I’m writing this today, Thursday, 17th, as school started today. But, I have to say, I miss her. The Christmas quilt was stretched, and we had quilters all around. Thank you to everyone for quilting. By lunchtime, we had 20 members and three guests - Marie Hejny, Dee Anderson, and my Sarah. President Irene led us in prayer, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. Thank you to the ones who set up and cleaned up. We love you all who do this every month. After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and a moment of silence was held for Phil Bronson. The “Our Father” was recited for him and our sick members. New Secretary Sandy Pochobradsky was out of the state so Ann Clagett read the minutes. Treasurer Dolores Vrana gave her report; both were approved as read. Ginny Svehlak read three funny stories that we all enjoyed. Sunshine Lady Dorothy announced August birthday celebrants - JoAnn Brown, Kay Lynn Kovar, Geraldine Valek, Dorothy Kudrna, and new mem-

ber Dee Anderson. “Happy Birthday” was sung to the above. President Irene welcomed two new members - Marie Hejny and Dee Anderson. We are happy to have them. President Irene announced we will be needing coffee cups and plastic utensils for the meeting next month. I didn’t catch if anyone volunteered; I hope so. President Irene showed several prayer shawls that were made by our member Lillie Macalik from Dallas and her friend from her church. Irene’s friend has seen them and asked if they would make her several. They were really pretty. Usually, you give them to nursing homesick people, to put around your shoulder when praying. We also discussed the quilt show next year on March 11, 2018. You know we need to start planning. Pat Fowler announced we will quilt for Maggie Holy in September and the Junior Sokol quilt in October. Members, we will need all your help. President Irene had a bottle of quilters’ moonshine that she showed and told how she mixes it up. She gave the recipe, but I didn’t catch it all. It is used when making quilt tops. You spray the fold then iron; it was really neat. The 50-50 dollar winner was Dorothy Kudrna. President Irene thanked all for attending, for quilting, the food, the set up, and clean up. Kay Lynn Kovar made a motion to adjourn the meeting. It was seconded by Pat Fowler. Thank you all for coming. Remember the next meeting on Thursday, September 14. We will quilt, have lunch, and have a meeting. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—
Fort Worth Friendship Club
Fort Worth Friendship Club met Wednesday, August 2, 2017, at the new St. Thomas Church parish hall. The meeting was called to order by President Barbara Becknell, and everyone was welcomed. Guests were Jacie Skrasek, granddaughter of Debbie Skrasek and great-granddaughter of Helen Skrasek; Joyce Helgeson, friend of Jo Ann Wilcox; Kathy Thome, friend of Marilyn Llewellyn; and Joey Bunero, grandson of Rose Ann Spann. Both Joyce and Kathy joined the Club. So glad to have you! The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all. A moment of silence was observed
in memory of Judy DeGrandchamp, our member who died on July 10. A prayer was said for her. Secretary Mary Ann Krivanek sent word that she would be late, and Libbie was asked to take the minutes. It was voted to dispense with the reading of the minutes from the last meeting. Treasurer Margaret Sears presented the financial report which was approved as presented. Sign-in sheets to be hostesses for November and December and to pick up the fried chicken for September and October were handed around. Everyone brought non-perishable food items and/or made cash donations for St. Thomas Food Pantry. The next designated month to bring items for the food pantry will be November. It was also announced that empty egg cartons are always needed so all you members, instead of throwing them away, save them for the food pantry. Vice President Lola Taylor asked for suggestions for speakers or programs for the future. She knows someone that does presentations on “things to do in case of an emergency.” This sounds interesting, and at our senior citizen ages, this sounds like things we all need to know and be aware of. Sunshine Person Darlene Tompkins reported on sending a sympathy card to the family of Judy deGrandchamp and get well cards to Harold and Adele Strand. Reporter Libbie stated that if any Club member does not receive the Vestnik and has an email address, she would be happy to send copies of her monthly report to them. August birthday celebrants were Betty Krenek, Pat McWilliams, and Margaret Sears. Everyone sang to them. August hostesses were Elizabeth Creamer, Laurie Dawson, and Mary Agnes Ward. Special thanks to Lola Taylor and Rose Ann Spann for the Hawaiian decorations. We had palm trees with monkeys, (not real, of course). All received a lei upon entering, flowers were on all tables, and everything looked so festive. Thanks! All of you did a great job! Winners of door prizes were Margaret Sears and Mary Ann Krivanek, Sorry, I didn’t get the names of donors, but thank you! Winners of the 50-50 dollar games were Elizabeth Creamer and Barbara Becknell. We always have happy winners. Our entertainment for the day was the Azle Christian Church International Ukulele players and singers. They were great and were very much enjoyed. Update on “Wip” on the Appalachian Trail My nephew Travis has about 400 miles to go to being a thru-hiker on the Appalachian Trail from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Katahdin in Maine which is about 2,200 miles. He did take a couple of zero days to go to New York City. On the average, it takes a thruhiker about six months to complete the hike. The trail goes through 14 states and throughout Maine. The trail is known for both its beauty and ruggedness of its terrain. Katahdin Mountain is a mile high and considered the most challenging of any mountain on the trail. I’ve read that even the strongest hiker may average only one mile an hour or less in places, where climbing, sliding, and scrambling may be required. Travis’ dad Mike and uncle Larry Tomanek of California plan to join him for a 100mile hike. Travis, my prayers are with you for a safe completion. Other We enjoyed receiving a note from Mary Kay Harrison, niece of the late Mary Pavey, from Owens Crossroads, Alabama. Thanks! It was nice hearing from you. Mary Kay wrote that she enjoys reading the Vestnik each week, and said she also reads the Ennis Sewing Circle article. Reporter Georgie Morales is my sister in case you don’t know that! Wednesday, September 6, 2017 Special from The West News July 13, 2017 Reprinted with permission.
The West Fallen Heroes Memorial committee received three donations totaling $15,750 on July 6, 2017, to go toward the memorial project currently under construction at West City Park. All three donations came courtesy of SPJST funds with the largest coming in the amount of $13,750 from the West Benevolence Fund. A $1,000 donation came courtesy of SPJST’s District Three general fund and another $1,000 from the District Three Director’s discretionary fund. “I’m glad we could make the donation,” SPJST District Three Director John Engelke said after the committee received the donations. “We appreciate all that West has done for SPJST, and I’m glad we were able to pull this together for them,” he added. “The West Benevolence Fund was established by SPJST on the day after the April 17, 2013, (West) fertilizer plant explosion in West to address the short and long-term needs that were certain to emerge,” SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek said. “SPJST has a lot of great members and friends in the community and surrounding vicinity.” Donations to West Benevolence Fund came primarily from SPJST members, lodges, and fundraising efforts hosted by the SPJST Home Office in Temple. Approximately $94,000 was raised. An advisory committee consisting of the presidents of the four West-area SPJST lodges has met periodically over the last four years, identifying projects needing attention and disbursing the funds. Committee members include Milton Peterson, president of Lodge 6, Cottonwood; Randy Pavelka, president of Lodge 35, Elk; Freddie Kaluza, president of Lodge 54, West; and John Engelke, president of Lodge 66, Waco. “SPJST is indebted to the advisory committee members and their spouses for their diligence in identifying and contributing to those projects where SPJST can make a positive difference,” Vanicek added. “SPJST extends its sincere admiration to the people of West for the magnificent effort that they have displayed in rebuilding this great community,” Vanicek said. “The Fallen Heroes Memorial represents a loving and moving tribute to the first responders who gave their lives that day. We’re honored to be able to contribute to

the project.” Joe Pustejovsky, who serves as a chairman for the Fallen Heroes Memorial committee, was among the committee members at the July 6 presentation. He was appreciative of the donation. “I think like all the rest (of the donations) we have received, it is awesome to see the outpouring of help to make this (Memorial) happen. We’ve had individuals, businesses, and organizations involved.” Construction on the Fallen Heroes Memorial, which is honoring those 15 individuals who lost their lives in the West Fertilizer plant explosion, began earlier
this year on April 17, and Pustejovsky said it is about 50 percent complete. “We need a few more days of concrete work,” he said while adding that long term it looks like everything will be ready by late summer except for maybe the granite work on the walls. “The granite work will take a long time and may push the completion date back,” Pustejovsky said. He added that the project as a whole “has really taken shape over the last couple of weeks.” The memorial plans call for 15 individual concrete memorials inside the main memorial with black marble plates for those who lost their lives in the ex-

plosion. Twelve of those individual memorials will have First Responder bronze helmets on them. Plans also call for a 15-foot long wall describing the explosion and a bench, along with galvanized steel planters. A round water feature (pool) with an eternal flame and a walkway is also part of the project. Numerous trees are also planned as part of the landscaping for this area. Both the United States and Texas flags, along with West Fire Department and West EMS flags, are to be along the three paneled description wall. West Benevolence Fund To date, this is a list of the checks which have been presented to West area projects though SPJST’s West Benevolence Fund:
• West Sokol — funding to enable the gymnastics club to purchase needed equipment that was lost when their building was destroyed. • West Rest Haven — funding to purchase an outdoor gazebo, rocking chairs, and stained glass windows for the chapel. • Waco Foundation — funding to purchase a firetruck playground equipment for the Parker Park Project. • History of West Museum — funding for construction as well as display funding. • West Volunteer Ambulance Association — funding of a new Polaris fourwheel drive EMS vehicle. • West Sokol — funds towards the construction of the new West Sokol Gymnasium. • Fallen Heroes Memorial — funds toward the construction of the Memorial. —SPJST—

place. We talked with ENC Director Jeb Lapeyrolerie and asked him for suggestions of what he would like to see at our camp. The idea that struck me was to build a new campsite area. I looked online to get ideas, and Jeb was really excited about it. I had to complete paperwork to get my service project approved by several people. Once it was approved, I began seeking donations. I wrote a letter asking for donations and built a model as a visual for others to see. I decided a great way to raise funds would be to have a bake sale at my adult lodge on a Friday night during a dance. Several SPJST members and Boy Scouts families donated items to sell, and three other Boy Scouts came to help me at the bake sale. I raised $400 in just a few hours! At the bake sale, I visited with an Eagle Scout, and by the next Monday morning, he had a fire ring donated for me! He knows what an honor it is to be an Eagle Scout and persuaded his boss to donate a ring for me. I was so excited! The generosity of others is really incred-
BEFORE
ible. I also took my letter and model around to local businesses and asked for donations. Many businesses gave me materials. Jeb gathered posts for me to use. This helped clear up trees that needed to come down, saved the expense of purchasing posts, and kept the benches looking natural. We had a quick timeframe to get the project completed before the camp season began. At first, I had my dad, Mike Girod, and grandpa, District Two Director Jesse Pospisil, help me lay out and cut the lumber that make up the benches. Then my fellow Scouts helped
me sand and stain the boards. On May 13, 2017, three older Scouts went with me to the ENC to help me mark out and dig the holes for the posts. It was a long, hot day. We worked around eight hours, but we got it done. We even set a few posts in concrete. On May 20, which was the following Saturday, 15 fellow Scouts along with a few leaders, my parents, grandparents, and District Three Director John Engelke worked another eight hours getting all but one board in place. It was a great effort by all. I especially want to thank Mr. Engelke for his time, great
AFTER
help, and for bringing out his tools. Our breakfast tacos were donated by Fajitas on Wheels in Taylor. Mr. Raul Gonzales was so proud to help me with my Eagle project. I am the fourth Eagle Scout he has helped, and he takes great pride in that. Mostly, I’d like to thank my grandparents, Jesse and Linda Pospisil, for donating lunch and dinner, my grandpa’s help with the benches, and their overall support of my project. Since my project was at the ENC, Jeb was gracious and allowed my troop to stay the night in the cabins. They loved it! This was a luxurious campout com-

pared to camping in tents. I was able to attend District Two’s summer camp opening ceremonies. It brought me great pride to see the campsite finished and enjoyed by so many campers. To begin summer camp at this location gives me hope that all the campers will realize new memories are about to begin. Campfires are a special part of scouting, and I want to share that with others. So many memories are made around a campfire – telling stories,

State Youth Director shares September updates
What a “funtastic” time we had this summer! Thank you to all district youth counselors, adult volunteers, camp staff, and SPJST members, officers, and directors for providing our youth with such a wonderful camp. I had a great time being at the district camps and enjoyed the fun activities at SPJST Education and Nature Center. I really enjoyed watching the youth interact with one another and how it helps them to come out of their comfort zone. I saw this happen with many new campers and experienced ones, too. You inspire them to be more confident in themselves and lead by example in teaching them to build lifelong friendships and providing lasting memories from our SPJST camp. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped with State Youth Achievement Day on August 5 at the Mayborn Center in Temple. Your assistance was greatly appreciated, and I could not have done this without you.
Grandparents Day - September 10 We all know that we live in a fastpaced world, but if we would slow down and take the time to visit with our grandparents we would learn so much from them. All youth club members are encouraged to honor their grandparents and the grandparents in their lodges during the month of September. Give them a chance to tell their stories - I promise you will not be disappointed.

Another idea would be to invite a fitness trainer to provide simple activities for the youth and share the importance of healthy eating.

Dear Vestnik Readers, I still cannot fully wrap my emotions around achieving my lifelong dream of winning SPJST State Queen. It is still surreal, but I am so thankful for God’s will and all of your support. August 5, 2017, will forever be the best day of my life. I am beyond excited to live the adventure of being State Queen. At my lodge’s adult meeting, State King Austen Holland and I made an appearance and said our speeches along with saying multitudes of thank yous to everyone who supported us every step of the way.
My first statewide appearance is at Westfest, and being a Westfest enthusiast, I am ready to finally make an appearance there with my giant SPJST crown. While it will be a challenge to polka all day and night with a crown, I will absolutely do anything to polka the day away. I am thrilled to meet new people, and I hope to see you there! Hurricanes And Days Of Rain By d.knape
Hurricanes and days of rain bring floods which deluge a city and turn it upside down. floods sweep away houses and cars, roofs and walls taking down all things in the way, leaving people with nothing pain and anguish is all that’s left yet worse than the loss of their physical possessions is the loss of their personal things family photos, heirlooms, keepsakes all the treasures of a lifetime. when these are gone there is nothing to hold on to stripped of their selves, people become empty shells sounds without an echo an emptiness is left within their broken hearts
such is the hell of hurricanes and floods lives are ruined with the loss of little treasures pieces of a life that can never be replaced therein lies the tragedy, like the loss of a child one cannot replace a memory
yet off in the distance is the timid sun trying to come out and onto this the people cling beneath the tears of human suffering lies always that faint glimmer of the human soul that eternal flame called hope. —SPJST—

ABC of Czech

No, Ne, Ano: Yes, No, Yes
hoj! Welcome to ABC of Czech. Language learners always come across so-called faux amis or false friends, and learners of Czech find no exception to this rule. In this edition, we’re having a look at one of the most commonly heard false friends in Czech — “no” — undoubtedly a word easily picked out of a conversation!
A
For speakers of languages such as English, we’re accustomed to “no meaning no!” as a negative. But beware ale pozor! In Czech, no is positive, not negative. Czech no means yeah! The Czech word for yes is ano. The form no is a shortening of ano, just like English ‘yeah’ is a shortened form of ‘yes’. Of course, yes in English and ano in Czech are shortened from different ends. And in Czech, just like in English, most of the time people use ‘yeah’ not ‘yes’ - no not ano, despite it making mothers, grandmothers, and grade-one teachers cringe. We’re really familiar with the usage of English yeah and no, but what about the Czech no? To get a sense of it, we’re going to eavesdrop on a phone conversation: No . . . no . . . dobře . . . no . . . no, no, já mu to řeknu . . . No, no je tu v budově . . . Tak jo já mu to řeknu. This is quite the misleading conversation, isn’t it?

What Dita was saying was: Yeah . . . yeah . . . okay . . . yeah . . . yeah, yeah, I’ll tell him . . . yeah, yeah, he is in the building . . . So I’ll tell him then. This is a really key when you’re just learning Czech and ask a passer-by a quick question, for example what time
is it. Here’s another short illustration:
Heather: Dito, nevíš kolik je hodin? Dita: No . . . je pět hodin.
Heather: Dita, do you know what time it is?
Dita: Yeah . . . it’s 5 o’clock.
As you probably experienced hearing this short exchange, as English speakers, as soon as we hear no, we assume a negative, and that the person does not know what time it is. What are the most

Czech Mates: Czech Heritage Museum welcomes Kolache Kitchen
By Susan Chandler, Administrator Czech Heritage Museum
Like poppyseed and posypka, the Kolache Kitchen’s new location in the Czech Heritage Museum is a perfect match. Temple residents and visitors have been enjoying fresh kolaches from the Wa s s e r m a n family at the K o l a c h e Kitchen for more than 30 years. The original location, on the south side of H.K. Dodgen Loop, is near the major hospitals, the mall, and Temple College. Plus, it’s on the way out of town going to Cameron and other points east. Now, the business has opened a second location within the Czech Heritage Museum building on the north side of town at 119 West French Avenue. This makes it easy to make a sunrise kolache run for northside residents in the historic and cultural arts districts, and for folks who work in the central business district downtown to grab a dozen to take in for office mates. “I am so blessed. There have been a lot of days where I put in a lot of hours,” she told the Temple Daily Telegram. “I thought this would take a while to take off. I didn’t think it would happen in two weeks.” Carol’s parents, Mike and Irene (Hundle) Wasserman, originally of Buckholts, opened the bakery in 1984, when Mike retired. Carol was expecting her oldest child, Chelsea. “When we were painting in here (the new location), I was remembering when Mom and Dad opened. My dad kept fussing at me because he was painting,
saying “Get out of here! You’re pregnant.” Now, Chelsea is expecting a little girl. “Isn’t that how cycles go?” Carol said. It’s an interesting observation, considering the kolache business. The word kolac comes from the old Slavonic root kolo, meaning “circle” or “wheel.” A fitting symbol for the circle of life. Although Carol’s husband, Jeff, has a full-time career, he jumps in wherever the need is and took off a week to paint and make the new bakery space ready for opening. From the first day open, owner Carol White has seen a steady stream of customers. She regularly sells out early and has to bring over more from the original location. Carol was there on the first day her parents opened the shop. “We were very busy, and we had kolaches everywhere. We used my grandmother’s recipe, so they were cracking tons and tons of eggs (for the yolks) and had all these egg whites left over. So, they started making angelfood cakes - even chocolate angelfood cakes, to use the egg whites. My dad would grind poppyseed, and they would make their own filling,” she said. “My mom actually converted that recipe later, so it’s really my mom’s recipe, but it tastes like my grandmother’s,” she said. “My mother did all the hard work to make it affordable for people to buy.” While watching her grandson, Creed, 6, playing nearby, Carol talked
about how her children grew up in the shop. “If my kids were sick or thought they were sick, they were here. Chelsea kind of learned that Grandpa would come pick her up with crackers and a Sprite no matter what was wrong with her. So my parents basically raised my kids and took care of them there, they always had a sleeping bag there,” she said. Her children worked to earn spending money in the shop throughout their high school and college years, and they still help when they can. Chelsea (now Pierce) teaches art in the Rogers school district, but she still helps make rolls. Carol’s son Chance now runs cattle, but will still come in when he can. “I didn’t just give them money. If they wanted something, they worked - I may have overpaid them, mind you. I always had something for them to do - paint a barn, make casseroles, do my shopping for me. They are hard workers,” Carol said.
“They were raised in the kolache shop, without a doubt - more than they probably needed to be,” she said with a laugh. Just then she smiled at Creed. “It’s kind of great that I have him here now,” she said.

Czech Heritage Museum offers Czech grammar mini-series
The Czech Heritage Museum will offer two classes in September focusing on Czech grammar and usage. The classes will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 14 and Thursday, September 28 at the Museum, 119 West French Avenue. First Lieutenant Ethan Gleue of Fort Hood will teach the class. Lt. Gleue is an Apache helicopter pilot with the U.S. Army and will deploy overseas in October. He is a West Point graduate and underwent nine weeks of language training in Czech and spent two years in Prague, Moravia, and Slovakia. He visited the Museum recently for a tour and offered to volunteer while he is in Texas. “I am so happy to find others as passionate about all things Czech as I am,” he said. “My vision for the class would be introductions, followed by sharing some useful vocabulary words, taking turns reading Czech passages focusing on pronunciation, speed, and proper pauses. After that, I can cover grammar principles,” said Lt. Gleue. While in the Czech Republic, Lt. Gleue designed a pocket card with dec-
linations and other useful tips so that he could quickly learn to communicate. Lt. Gleue will teach declination and the use of the cases, perfective versus imperfective verbs first. But, if time allows, he will offer help with aby/abychom and other conditionals, the four “fors” of Czech and any other principles the class requests. A donation of $7 per person is requested with all proceeds supporting the upcoming World War I centennial exhibit at the Museum. For more information, call 254-8992935 or email CzechHeritageMuseum@gmail.com. —SPJST—
