Czech Republic Helps Czech-Texan Community Hit by Harvey
Hynek Kmonicek, Czech Republic Ambassador to the United States, announced the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lubomir Zaoralek, has approved the provision of 5 million Czech Crowns ($237,437) for humanitarian assistance to displaced families in La Grange, Texas, in response to Hurricane Harvey. Brian Vanicek, Honorary Consul to the Czech Republic for Texas, notified La Grange officials of this donation that is intended for the basic needs of people displaced by Hurricane Harvey such as: shelter, food, water, health and hygiene needs. Mr. Vanicek presented the donation to La Grange during a public ceremony at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, Texas on Friday, September 15 at 2 p.m. where Judge Edward Janecka accepted the award on behalf of La Grange. Hurricane Harvey caused devastating floods in the State of Texas, leading to loss of life and temporary displacement of millions of people, including Czech compatriots. The hurricane and resulting floods also had a severe impact on the infrastructure and environment. The donation presented by Vanicek represents an expression of the Czech Republic’s solidarity with the United States of America and the Czech compatriots during this disaster with far-reaching consequences. The Government of the Czech Republic is ready to continue with this support. —SPJST—

e are hearing about many ways that our members and lodges have stepped up to help during the Hurricane Harvey aftermath. Lodges, youth clubs and members, please send us a photo(s) and brief information about your efforts. We would love to include these in an upcoming Věstník. SPJST Education and Nature Center in Waldeck is serving as a shelter for evacuees. Lodge 88, Houston opened its parking lot so flooded neighbors could leave their vehicles in the lot. Lodge 81, Needville was a back-up shelter site for hurricane evacuees. Several lodges and members have collected and delivered donations. Please share your efforts with the Věstník. Upload your photos and info online at spjst.org. Email to vestnik@spjst.org, or text to 254-534-0807. We are also in the process of assessing damages to SPJST lodge properties in the Houston area. We will share an update as soon as more information is available. Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund has been organized and will be managed by the SPJST Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, located within the confines of the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street in Temple, Texas. Special thanks to those who have contributed to the fund. To date, $6,575 has been received by the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. A Hurricane Harvey Relief Commit-
tee will be established to identify projects needing attention and submitting requests to the SPJST Foundation for the disbursement of funds contributed to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. The Fund is being organized in a fashion similar to that of the West Benevolence Fund which sought to address a multitude of needs and projects promulgated as a result of the massive April 18, 2013, fertilizer explosion which rocked the Central Texas City of West. Checks may be issued to the “SPJST Foundation” and designated in the memo portion of the check to be directed to the “Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.” Donations to the relief fund are tax-deductible. Checks can be mailed to PO Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503.

We discussed the Veterans Day dance on November 11 with the Moravians, how to cover the rental on October 28, the January 20 special dance, and the New Year’s Eve dance with TC Taylor. We voted not to install the television channels and to make a sign for our address. Jason Hoelscher changed the address on the hall. It seems as though it was not listed as a business. Birthdays were Jonathan Maddux August 18, Alice Hoelscher - September 19, Margaret Mikeska - September 25, and Cortni Ashcraft - September 26. On the sick list are Johnny Kelarek, Shirley Kelarek, Lillian J., and Randolph Green. Deceased members are Marvin
Wilde, Dorothy Urbanke, Coach GChas Groseclose, and Johnnie Klecka. Never have so few done so much for so many. They will be missed by many. For the Lodge, Bobby Hoelscher, Reporter —SPJST—

Fort Worth Friendship Club
The Friendship Club met Wednesday, September 6, 2017, at St. Thomas Church Parish Hall. The meeting was called to order by President Barbara Becknell, and everyone was welcomed. We had no guests. The Pledge of Allegiance was said, and the “Our Father” was said for all the victims of Hurricane Harvey. Secretary Mary Ann Krivanek read the minutes from the last meeting. Treasurer Margaret Sears gave the financial report. Both were approved as presented. Our tables were decorated with sunflowers. Thanks to Rose Ann Spann. Lola Taylor was missed as she had a funeral to attend. Rose Ann reported the ukulele players sent their thanks for being able to perform for us, and they hope that they are invited again. Only four musicians were able to come last month, but they said there are a total of 10 musicians in all. We certainly thank them as they were most entertaining and enjoyable, and everyone agreed to invite them again. It was reported that Lois Smith is currently in Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital, 1301 Pennsylvania, downtown Fort Worth in Room 310 in the Bloxum Tower. We wish for her a speedy and complete recovery. Homebound member Betty Landsfeld is now residing in Willow Park Rehab/Care Center in Willow Park. Her address is 300 Crowne Pointe Boulevard, Room 304B, Willow Park, Texas 76087. I am sure both would love to receive cards and hear from everyone. I hear that Betty is enjoying her new home and has been playing dominoes, which she enjoys. Sunshine Person Darlene Tompkins reported she did not mail any cards dur-
ing the month. She will send a get well card to Lois Smith and a thinking of you card to Betty Landsfeld. It was suggested the Club send Father Jerry Ward a congratulatory card on his 50th anniversary of Priesthood. Father Ward spoke to the Club in the past. Members, remember, if you know someone worthy of receiving a card, please call Darlene. The next designated month to bring non-perishable food items for St. Thomas Food Pantry is November, and it is no longer necessary to bring empty egg cartons. Since we have had several new members join the Club, wearing name badges was discussed. President Barbara will look into getting badges that you wear around the neck. The October Halloween meeting/social was discussed. Everyone was asked to bring her own Halloween decorations to decorate your table. Lola always has prizes for best table displays. Wearing your costume is optional. Colors are, naturally, orange and black. Hostesses for October will be Jo Ann Wilcox, Darlene Tompkins, and Marilyn Llewellyn with Darlene picking up the chicken. The signing of “Happy Birthday” went out to September celebrants - Mary Ann Krivanek, Sherrill Gustavson, and Libbie Vrla. May you have many more. Door prizes were brought by Debbie Skrasek and Barbara Becknell, who brought two. Our winners were Rose Ann Spann, Margaret Laymance, and Tracy Horn. Winners of the 50/50 dollar games were Tracy Horn and Margaret Hoenig. This was Tracy’s lucky day! Special thanks go out to the door prize donors. Hostesses Sherrill Gustavson and Laurie Dawson where thanked for the wonderful job they did. Of course, Lupy Esparza is always appreciated, and big thanks to her as she is always the coffee maker. Thanks also to Sherrill for picking up the chicken. Following the meeting, it was adjourned, and grace was said for lunch. We had a great friend chicken luncheon with some wonderful side dishes. Games were then played. Update on “Wip” on the Appalachian Trail My nephew Travis will be entering the 100-mile “Wilderness” stretch which ends 10 miles short of Katadhin Mountain in Maine and concludes the 2,200 mile hike. His dad, Mike, and uncle Larry will join him for this 100 miles. It normally takes 8 to 10 days to hike this section as some days the trail is so difficult you can only make one mile in an hour. It is recommended you carry 10 days of food and carry extra water although there

is usually quite a lot of water along the trail. It is also recommended hanging a bear bag in a tree to protect your food at night as there are lots of bears in Maine.
I have also read the mice in shelters are ferocious, and hanging food in a shelter rarely deters them from eating it. The food you carry should average 100 calo-
Perfect Day for a Picnic By Justin Everett • SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone
On Sunday, September 10, 2017, SS. Cyril and Methodius Church in Marak held its annual homecoming picnic. This was by far one of the best church picnics in the state of Texas. The weather for the day was absolutely gorgeous. I loved how it was moderately warm with a cool breeze. I am very relieved that the intense Texas heat is finally coming to an end. The day began with a morning mass then a luncheon. On the menu was a delectable southern treat: fried chicken and sausage with all the trimmings. I enjoyed my plate so much, I couldn’t help but to purchase another one and take it home for supper. There was also an auction going on with lots of goodies for sale. I really enjoyed playing some of the carnival games under the Matus Pavilion. Even though I did not win a soda at the bottle toss game, I still had fun throwing the rings. Now, we get to the pride and joy of the picnic—the music. Entertainment was provided remarkably by The Praha Brothers Band. The guys gave a great performance, and I enjoyed every song they played. I would like to personally thank Bernard Strmiska for letting me play a couple of songs on his drum set with the band. When The Praha Brothers took a break, members of the
Vrazels Polka Band and guest musicians played a few songs for everyone. The crowd just loved seeing the Vrazels back together again. When I was a little boy, I used to go to the Vrazels Polka Band dances all of the time and I have such fond memories from those dances. All of those fond memories went racing through my mind when I saw the Vrazels playing together at the picnic. I loved when Alfred Vrazel jokingly said in between songs, “Right now, we are going to introduce everyone. We will start with the youngest. Mr. Anton Vrazel, who will be 90 years old next month.” The Vrazels have been performing at the Marak Picnic since the early 1960s and still continue to do so every year. Last year, a Pavilion was built and dedicated to the Vrazels Polka Band’s legacy. The pavilion is now the new performing spot at the Marak Picnic. Before then, the Vrazels would simply play on a flatbed trailer. The picnic had an amazing turnout, and a big thanks to everyone who helped with and attended the event. There are many more polka music events coming so be on the look out. Spanem Bohem. —SPJST—

ries or more per ounce. I have read that you can arrange with a shuttle service for food drops which is very expensive. Wip and his fellow hikers expect to complete the hike before the end of September. I can’t wait to hear all the stories, and during the last six months, I’ve read everything I could find about the Appalachian Trail. My great-niece Melanie Kosarek was married in August to Barrett Hall in a beautiful wedding ceremony, lovely dinner, and dance in Waco. The couple will make their home in Norman, Oklahoma. Congratulations and best wishes! Melanie's parents are J.D. and Pam Kosarek of Waco. I went on a senior citizen field trip last week with Jerry and Henrietta Milan, Jerry and Donna Parker, and our driver Lesli Milan to visit the George W. Bush Museum and view the Portraits of Courage painted by President Bush. We enjoyed viewing all the paintings and listening to the audio on each portrait. The exhibit will be there until October 17. It is a very worthwhile trip to Dallas. I look forward to seeing everyone on October 4. So Until, Keep Smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

- Czech by Numbers -
Hello,
Idioms
and welcome to Radio Prague’s special Czech language series Czech by Numbers, which explores numbers and their usage in everyday Czech speech. We’ll be looking at numbers in Czech idioms and proverbs.
Jedna vlaštovka jaro nedělá - literally “One swallow does not make a spring,” or in proper English, one swallow does not make a summer. We move on to the number two and the saying: Dvakrát měř, jednou řež. It says “measure twice, cut just once,” recommending you to consider at length before you take an important and irreversible decision. The word dvakrát, meaning twice, can be used idiomatically to mean something like “much” as in the expression Není mi dvakrát dobře - I’m not feeling all that well. A double standard in Czech is dvojí metr - a double measuring tape, if you like, or double measure. Moving on to three, you may come across this nonsensical saying especially at parties where people eat lots: Ať jsme tlustý na tři prsty. “Let’s be three fingers fat.” Czechs use the rhyming saying to encourage themselves and others to indulge in food. Staying with three, this saying recommends to you to be thrifty: Kdo šetří má za tři - “He who saves has as much as three others.” If you want to discuss something with somebody in private, just the two of you, it is called rozhovor mezi čtyřma očima a dialogue between four eyes. If you hear somebody being described as giving the impression that neumí do pěti počítat - he or she “can’t count to five,” it

President našeho řádu Freddie Kaluža zahájil naši schůzi, přivítal přítomné členy a členky, složili jsme přísahu vlajce Spojených států a republice, pro kterou stojí, uctili jsme památku zemřelých členů. a členek.

Ameriané a hlavně Texané brzy opraví svoje příbytky a v mnohých případech budou pevnější než ty předešlé.
veřejnosti uvedli tanci, verbuňkem a zpěvem.
Texas Polka News features Alpine Village Band
The September issue of Texas Polka News features the Alpine Village Band and its alter ego The Dogensteins. Classic, or with a bite, this talented group of musicians has your polka. Theresa Parker interviews band leader Wes Kucera about the move to more edgy music backed by a long tradition of Czech music that started in the old country. Gary E. McKee and Wes Matus pay tribute to record producer extraordinaire Ray Doggett. We remember Johnnie I Krajca and Glen Campbell. Justin Everett reviews a pure country CD by Roger Kirby & The Texas Heartbeat. In honor of the 40th anniversary of the King’s death, Justin also shares a story about Elvis and his Texas connections. Carl Finch of Brave Combo has some musings from the road. In the market for a sousaphone or books of music? Check out the For Sale section. Of course, we have your schedule of church picnics, dances, festivals, and live music events. Coming in October: accordionist with attitude, Terry Ca-
vanagh, his creation of Franzie the Chicken, a little chicken dance history, and how musicians really feel about this dance that will be played thousands of times over the next two months. Texas Polka News will mark its 30th anniversary in 2018. To celebrate, the paper has launched a subscription drive to increase readership, giving back to its supporters. For every new subscription or renewal from now through May 2018, TPN will donate $5 of the subscription price to SPJST Youth Programs. Not only will SPJST youth benefit from the donated subscription money, $3,000 in prizes will be awarded to the club or organization that brings in the most new and renewed subscriptions. See the ad in this issue with information on how to subscribe. It’s a good time to start thinking about the music lovers on your Christmas list. Give a one-year subscription to the paper, and both you and the recipient receive a Polka On! magnet. —SPJST—

It’s Time to Get Financially Fit
‘‘
s a racecar driver and A athlete, being fit is important to me. But fitness extends to all parts of your life, including your finances. And when it comes to being financially fit, getting life insurance is key. The way I look at it, it comes down to self worth and whether you think you and your family are worth protecting financially. I think you are.
‘‘
If you don’t know where to start with getting life insurance, ask for help.
Just don’t procrastinate. It’s time to get it done.
