SPJST Annuities: Excellent Way to Accumulate Money
Annuities are long-term, tax-deferred savings plans that provide lump sum funds, income for life, or income for a fixed period of time. They are an excellent way to accumulate money for retirement or other purposes. SPJST’s Traditional IRA or a Roth IRA may be purchased as an SPJST annuity. This year, you can contribute for 2017 until April 16, 2018. However, there are some limitations. For example, for 2017, the maximum you can contribute to a Traditional or Roth IRA is the smaller of $5,500 ($6,500 if you are age 50 or older) or an amount determined by your modified AGI for the current year. Both the Traditional and Roth IRA annuity amounts may be subject to additional penalties if withdrawn early. In addition to the Traditional IRA and Roth IRA, SPJST
also offers flexible premium annuities, five-year fixed annuities as well as 10-year fixed annuities. These annuities also grow tax deferred and can provide a source of income as well. SPJST’s fixed annuities do not have annual contribution limits or the income restrictions that IRAs have. SPJST surrender charges will apply to your annuity contract if early withdrawals are made. Annuities also offer some tax advantages over that of a bank CD. With a bank CD, you may have taxes every year as the interest accrued. However, with an annuity, income tax is deferred as long as the funds remain in the annuity. Please contact your annuity-certified agent or the Home Office at 1-800-727-7578 for more information. —SPJST—

Member faces eviction, seeks assistance with property tax
In 1995, I, Ginny Prasatik Thomas, was asked by my 82-year-old mother to move from Houston to Austin to help care for my elderly dad, who had asthma and survived prostate cancer and pneumonia. He then started having difficulty swallowing. After additional testing, it was decided that Ginny Prasatik he needed surgery to insert a stomach-tube for feeding. The home health nurse taught me how to feed my dad every four hours daily and hook him up to the Jevity pump each night. After two and one-half years of stomach food feeding him, I was totally exhausted; so my mother and I decided to move him into a nursing home when he was almost 93 years old. We visited him daily. He died there at age 95. With just my mother and I living at home then, I tried to seek employment, but at age 65, no one was willing to hire me because my references had either died or moved away. I was even unable to find part-time work. Then my mother was told that she had glaucoma thus reducing her depth-perception causing her frequent falls. She also needed two pacemakers in succession for her heart. After she fell four more times in her home and was rushed to the hospital, I decided it was time to move her into an assisted living facility. Up until then, I was the recipient of her ERS (Employment Retirement System of Texas) allotment and my social security income. Since she was still paying the home owner’s insurance, I was able to keep up financially, including the Travis County property taxes. My mother passed away of a massive stroke at 94 years of age in 2007. I was able to pay the property taxes one more year after her death. After that, I had the taxes deferred for nine years, and as of Janu-
ary 31, 2017, the property taxes I owe are $38,000. My five siblings want to evict me out of my family homestead to sell it - even though the Travis County deferment allows me to remain in my home until I die or if I am able to move elsewhere on my fixed income. Since the homestead is a life estate, it must be divided equally between the six of us. My sixth of the estate requires me to pay all the back taxes, plus attorney fees. The $1,183 I receive monthly from Social Security plus the $632 a month from ERS is not enough for me to find a decent place in which to live, pay utilities, car insurance, supplemental health insurance, food, and future repairs on my car, if needed. I also need major dental work and medical supplies. I only buy used clothing, as needed. I use Meals on Wheels and Drive a Senior to take me to doctor and dentist offices and to the grocery store. I have a friend helping me find a possible tenant to rent a bedroom and adjoining bath to cover the costs of future property taxes, but I first need to resolve this $38,000 property tax debt. My first priority is to pay off the $38,000 tax debt I have. Next, I need a tenant to put a monthly amount aside for next year’s property tax. I hope that you are a compassionate person who can empathize with my dilemma. If you are, I would appreciate your help by making a contribution to my GoFundMe account, which is called “GinnyGoFundMe” and can be found at https://www.gofundme.com/qcagnqginnygofundme. With my 2017 Travis County property taxes due soon, I will owe a total of $46,585. I believe that if my siblings go to court to evict me, the judge will hopefully be understanding and give me more time after December 31, 2017, to pay off this tax debt. I am now 82 years old, a graduate of the University of Texas, looking for work, and am relying on your donation to my GoFundMe account. I thank you wholeheartedly for your donation and prayers! Sincerely, Ginny Prasatik Lodge 155, Austin —SPJST—

Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund established by SPJST Foundation
The devastation experienced by Texans living along the Texas Gulf Coast and many points inland reminds us of the fragile existence that we share with our environment. In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, SPJST members and others have been contacting the SPJST Home Office in Temple wanting to give financial assistance — under the auspices of SPJST. The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund has been organized and will be managed by t h e SPJST Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, located within the confines of the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street in Temple, Texas. Relief efforts are currently underway and are expected to continue for months if not years. A Hurricane Harvey Relief Committee will be established to identify projects needing attention and submitting requests to the SPJST Foundation for the disbursement of funds contributed to the Hurricane Har-
vey Relief Fund. As Texans work to rebuild their lives post Hurricane Harvey, it is important that SPJST — through the SPJST Foundation — do all it can to help them get back on their feet. The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund is being organized in a fashion similar to that of the West Benevolence Fund which sought to address a multitude of needs and projects promulgated as a result of the massive April 18, 2013, fertilizer explosion which rocked the Central Texas City of West. Checks may be issued to the “SPJST Foundation” and designated in the memo portion of the check to be directed to the “Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.” Donations to the relief fund are tax-deductible. Checks can be mailed to PO Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503. —SPJST—

Heritage Day this Sunday at Sokol Dallas
This year, we are not going to the Texas State Fair to celebrate Heritage Day. Instead, it will be held at Sokol Hall at 7448 Greenville Avenue in Dallas, Texas 75231, on Sunday, October 22, 2017, between the hours of 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. The afternoon program includes the Dallas Czech Orchestra opening the ceremony followed by a parade of kroj, Beseda dancers, little dancers, folk dancers, a performance featuring the children from the Czech School of Dallas, and a Sokol gymnastic exhibition. The Czech and Then Some Band from Ennis will be playing from 3 to 6 p.m. for our dancing and listening pleasure. It will be presented by the American Czech Culture Society and its member societies—SPJST, Sokol, WFLA, KJT, KJZT, RVOS, and Vaclav Havel Czech School of Dallas. Admission is $5 per person (ages 16 and under are free of charge), but if you wear your kroj, you get in for free! Each society is asked to bring donated baskets valued at $25 (gift cards or items valued up to $25) to this event as our charity to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. Many of our Czech buildings and Czech communities were damaged dur-
ing the severe storm of Hurricane Harvey. Tickets can be purchased during the day, and ticket winners will be announced before the band starts. Lots of food and refreshments will be available along with children’s activities to celebrate our heritage. So come and enjoy a day of fun, food, entertainment, fellowship, and dancing pleasure to celebrate our Heritage Day! If you need more information, you can contact these committee members: Bob Podhrasky - pod@att.net, James Macik - jamesmacik@embarqmail.com, or Nina Marcussen - czechschoolofdallas@yahoo.com. Keep the tradition going and come celebrate and appreciate the Heritage Day Partnership that we have been doing since 1929. See you there! Fraternally yours, Lynda Novak, Secretary —SPJST—

2017 - 2018 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance
First Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the June 2017 to May 2018 youth year. This is total merit points for the 2017-2018 youth year thusfar. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended from June 2017 to May 2018. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities.
What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards.
Contest Dates June 1, 2017 to May 31, 2018
Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior
Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Youth Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Youth Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Youth Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest. Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Youth Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.
Merit Point Awards First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division. Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through fifth place awards to qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The junior and teen with the most points in each district also receive recognition. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first place will receive the award.* Junior and Teen Point Awards First Place $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place $20 Fourth Place - $15 Fifth Place $10
What is an Active Youth Member? A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school. Dist Ldg Name Pts

- Czech by Numbers -
Living and housing numbers Hello, and welcome to Radio
Prague’s Czech language series Czech by Numbers, which explores numbers and their usage in everyday Czech speech. In this lesson, we look at numbers to do with living and housing.
If you look into any Czech real estate magazine or at an online catalog, you will be overwhelmed by numbers. In fact, the first page on a real estate server where you first specify your demand is all numbers. If you are looking for a flat in Prague, for example, it will ask you which district f r o m Prague 1 P r a h a jedna, to Prague 10 - Praha deset. Then there is the size of the flat. If it is given in square metres, it is quite understandable. But how about those strange numbers and acronyms? A foreigner has no way of knowing what a 2+1 (dva plus jedna) or 3+kk (tři plus ká ká) means. Well, the first figure always states the number of bedrooms, or rather habitable rooms with the exception of kitchen. The number 1 - jedna - or the letters after the plus sign specify the type of kitchen in the flat. The acronym kk or ká ká stands for kuchyňský kout - literally “a kitchen c o r n e r, ” that is a kitchenette. Then you will probably like to know which floor your flat is on. In Czech, the ground floor - přízemí - counts as zero and the one above is the first floor - první patro and so on. But real estate agents like to make things look nicer so they will call the ground floor první nadzemní podlaží - the

first “above the ground” floor to make it sound more attractive. There are also apartment categories. They have survived from before the fall of communism and specify whether a flat has central heating, hot water, a flush toilet etc. - things that we now take for granted, but weren’t so natural only a couple of decades ago in some old buildings. So a first category flat - byt první kategorie has all the amenities and is in a good condition. The higher the number of the category, the poorer the state of the apartment. Double glazing - dvojitá skla is some-
thing absolutely natural and has been as far as anyone can remember in this country but these days, especially in noisy cities, you may require your flat to have triple glazing trojitá skla to reduce the noise. And that’s all for this edition. We’ll be back with more Czech expressions using numbers. Till then, goodbye - na shledanou. ~ Pavla Horáková http://www.radio.cz/en/section/abc/czech-by-numbers-housing; 07-10-2006

The Tradition of Santa Claus (#SL-4 - $11) The first Europeans to arrive in America were responsible for bringing the tradition of St. Nicholas with them. S t . Nicholas was a good saint, doing good for everyone. A cathedral, a Haitian port, and an early settlement were named for him. However, he had a tough time surviving during the Protestant reformation as that group took a dim view of saints, and in fact, through the first half of the 19th century, religious groups in America continued to regard December 25 as a day without religious significance, a day for normal business. As a new understanding of family life began to take place and the place of children was emerging, the season began to gradually change. The tradition of Santa Claus, as
we now know him, began to change rapidly with Washington Irving’s 1809 book, Knickerbocker’s History of New York. He was portrayed in this book as a pipe-smoking Nicholas soaring over rooftops in a flying wagon, pulled by a single reindeer, delivering presents to good girls and boys and switches to bad ones. By 1821, the modern Santa began to take form. The poem, written in 1823, now known as “The Night Before Christmas” helped Santa’s look to evolve over the next few years, to the plump, jolly, red-suited elderly man we know as Santa. His mode of transportation changed from a flying wagon to a sleigh driven by eight reindeer.
The Legend of the Rooster (#SL-12 - $14) In the Bible, the rooster is noted for crowing three times after Peter denied Christ. It became the symbol for Christ’s passion. Other times, the rooster signified the repentance of the saints and religious vigilance, as well as resurrection. To this day, the rooster is seen as a weathervane and can often be seen on top of churches. According to legend, the rooster has crowed at midnight only one time: to announce the birth of Baby Jesus on the night that He was born. For this reason, Spanish and Latin American countries call their midnight mass on Christmas Eve the Mass of the Rooster, or “Misa Del Gallo.” The crowing of the rooster at the dawn of each morning symbolizes the daily triumph of light over darkness and the victory of good over evil.
The Symbol of the Lighthouse (#SL-14 - $8) The lighthouse is a tall circular stone structure built upon the highest point of land, closest to the sea and its potential dangers. It stands alone, symbolizing strength, guidance, and safe harbor; it is a welcoming sign for all who travel by sea. It guides ships along their route, directing them away from danger, and it notifies the sailors of approaching rocks, reefs, and other obstacles which they must cautiously navigate. The lighthouse is also a comforting sign that the harbor is near. The lighthouse lifts up our spirits and inspires us. It symbolizes guidance through life and serves as a symbol of Christ, the light of the world.
The Czech Christmas Greeting (#SL-24 - $9) Vesele Vanoce is universally interpreted as “Merry Christmas” in the Czech language. This ornament, with those words alongside a church, holds a narrative of Czech customs printed on the back. Every household, with at least one Czech living in it, will want to proudly display this ornament on its Christmas tree. Submitted by, Nancy Machu SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor —SPJST—
