Sales Agents’ News

“The Six Keys to Successful Networking” set for Nov. 4 at Lodge 81, Needville The next sales agents’ training is Saturday, November 4, 2017, at SPJST Lodge 81, Needville, located at 13601 Highway 36 (Violet Street) in Needville. It is “The Six Keys to Successful Networking.” If you are part of chambers, associations, rotary clubs, or business networks, this will be a great opportunity to learn how to work them. attend, how to work the network, how to do one-on-one appointments to build that partnership for referrals, and how to identify the ROI. It will be in-depth, and we expect the Needville Chamber to attend. This will not only give you the guidance, but also an opportunity to network with other businesses. If you have friends in the business, and you think they may be good SPJST agents, please invite them. An RSVP is needed for all attendees.

The class is open to all SPJST sales agents in all districts, and the instructor is Fraternal Field Manager Delisle Doherty. To RSVP, please email Fraternal Field Manager Delisle Doherty at delisled@sbcglobal.net.

Czech Night Bingo at SPJST Lodge 80, Holland

I would like to thank everyone who attended and worked “Czech Night Bingo” in honor of Czech Heritage Month in Texas. We had an awesome crowd that brought back many memories of what Czechs and SPJST are all about. We had polka music in the background playing from two bands that had a lot of history with Lodge 80, Holland. The Joe Patek Orchestra played many

years at the picnics and other dances throughout the years. Dancing to a waltz with Dorothy Vansa, with the Vrazels playing in the background, reminded me of the exercise that we all miss now. We made it around the entire dance floor among the bingo players, and it was wonderful! The Vrazels played the first wedding dance at the lodge when it was rebuilt in 1963.

Fort Worth Friendship Club

The Fort Worth Friendship Club met Wednesday, October 4, 2017, at St Thomas Church Parish Hall. The meeting was called to order by President Barbara Becknell, and everyone was welcomed. Our guest was Mary Schaffer. The Pledge of Allegiance was said, and the “Our Father” and “Hail Mary” were said for all the victims in Las Vegas. Secretary Mary Ann Krivanek read minutes from the last meeting. Treasurer Margaret Sears gave the financial report. Both were approved as presented. Each group sitting at the table brought Halloween decorations for their table. Several were outstanding. The table I sat at won second prize—thanks to Debbie Skrasek! She has all these cute decorations and did a great job. It was reported Lorraine Cross is still ill, but she did manage to phone all on her call list to remind them of the meeting. Lois Smith is home from the hospital and believe I heard that someone stays with her during the day. Rose Ann Spann was missed, but since her hus-

band was feeling better, they went fishing to Lake Texoma. I hope they caught a lot of fish. Sunshine Person Darlene Tompkins reported sending get well cards to Lois Smith, Lorraine Cross, and Patti Williams, Thinking of you card was sent to Betty Landsfield, and a congratulation card was sent to Father Jerry Ward on his 50th anniversary of priesthood. Mary Agnes Ward extended thanks from her brother, Father Ward, for the card sent to him. Carolyn Irby reported on spending a lot of time going back and forth to the hospital, as her sister, Patti Williams, was in the hospital for almost a month, and then her brother had surgery and spent a few days in the same hospital. Both are much better by now. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to our October celebrant Sharron Connelly. We hope you have many more. October hostesses Jo Ann Wilcox, Darlene Tompkins, and Marilyn Llewellyn were thanked for the great job with Darlene getting double thanks as she picked up the fried chicken. Our menu for November was discussed, and Mary Ann Krivanek volun-

teered to bake the turkey and make the dressing and gravy. All were asked to bring a dish to complement turkey. Our theme will be Thanksgiving, and colors will be fall colors. President Barbara also stated that November is a designated month in which we bring non-perishable items for the St. Thomas Food Pantry. Items requested as per the church bulletin were green beans, corn, and macaroni and cheese. Monetary donations are also welcome. Vice President Lola stated she would bring supplies and would show us how to make Christmas ornaments for those that are interested. November hostesses will be Margaret Laymance, Darlene Tompkins, and Libbie Vrla. Our Christmas social/party was discussed. Following discussion, it was voted for all to bring a $10 toy for a child which will be given to the Samaritan House for distribution. Do not wrap the gift so that it can be sorted by boy/girl and age group. There will be no exchange gift for members this year. Name tags were discussed and if anyone has one at home, bring it to wear before they are acquired for everyone. Following the meeting, grace was

News I stopped in at Willow Park Rehab/Care Center for a visit with Betty Landsfeld. She is doing fine, and we had a nice visit. On the way home, I stopped by Sun Rise Care Center for a quick visit with Camille Bolcer. She was sitting in her living room at the ironing board playing Solitaire cards. She, too, is doing great. I enjoyed visiting with both of them. I enjoyed attending the Skrasek family reunion at SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth in September. The food was good. Harold Strand on the accordion was enjoyable along with the Mikula Orchestra. The most fun was watching Jacey Skrasek win three cakes on the cake roulette. It was a fun afternoon. Of the seven hikers that Wip hiked with, all but one made it to the end. I am so proud of Travis who completed the hike, made so many friends, and seems he thoroughly enjoyed his time on the trails. Both Mike and Larry said it was more difficult than they anticipated, but they made it. When they got to the end of this 100 miles, they didn’t hike the extra 15 miles to the

top of Mount Katahdin which is the end of the trail, but were met by Mari (mother to Travis and two sisters), and they drove to the top from the other side. They were there to take a photo of Wip standing on the top with the Mount Katahdin sign. Mari is the second youngest of the seven Tomanek children, and as each child was born, Joe and Anna Milan always drove to their house to write SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth insurance certificates. The older children have always told me they were always glad to see Mr. and Mrs. Milan as Mr. Milan always brought them peppermint sticks. So Until, Keep Smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

Preserve carved pumpkins in various ways

(MS) Jack-o’-lanterns and other carved pumpkin designs are frequently the centerpieces of Halloween festivities. The twinkling lights and orange glow of jack-o’-lanterns can add ambiance to any autumn event. The trouble with carving pumpkins is that most people want to do it right away, only to discover their

pumpkins wilt and decay long before Halloween. Nothing ruins Halloween more than visiting a home to trick-or-treat and not getting candy. Equally disappointing is a sad pumpkin display withering away on a front porch. Even though all pumpkins will eventually rot, certain tips can keep carvings from collapsing too soon.

• Choose a sturdy pumpkin. Inspect the pumpkin of your choosing carefully, looking for gouges, spots, and holes. Even a small blemish can quickly expand into a mushy mess. Select pumpkins with even color and firm flesh, and make sure that the pumpkin doesn’t feel tender when you push on the skin.

• Visit local pumpkin stands. Pumpkins that have been shipped miles and miles in hot cargo trucks may be overly ripened or battered. Pumpkins that were grown nearby may be fresher. Plus, buying pumpkins locally supports local farmers.

• Coat the pumpkin. Preservation methods may aim to keep the pumpkin hydrated and inhibit mold and other microbial growth. Commercially sold pumpkin preservation products, such as Pumpkin Fresh®, hold up well. Soaking and spraying carved pumpkins with a bleach-and-water solution also seems to preserve designs.

• Keep it out of the elements. Store carved pumpkins in a cool, dry place. This will help slow down the rotting process for pumpkins exposed to outdoor fungi, other microbes and warm sunlight. • Use an artificial light source. Reduce the heat inside of the pumpkin and en-

courage hydration by selecting a batterypowered light instead of a lit candle to illuminate the carving.

• Skip the carving. Once pumpkin skin is compromised, microbes can enter. In lieu of carving, paint or decorate pumpkins in other ways if you want them to stay fresh for a long time. Glow in the dark paint can help pumpkins stand out at night. Carved pumpkins may last a week or two, while uncut pumpkins can last for a month or more. Keeping pumpkins hydrated and mold-free will prolong your designs. —SPJST—

District Two Youth . . . Fun at Six Flags Over Texas

• Scrape the insides of the pumpkin thoroughly. Any moist bits inside the pumpkin will mold quickly. The pumpkin carving experts at Pumpkin Masters recommend scraping as much of the “guts” out as possible, leaving about a one-inch thickness of the wall of the pumpkin.

District Two youth and adults enjoyed a day at Six Flags Over Texas on Saturday, October 7, 2017.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Sixty-four District Two youth, parents, and friends took the road to Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington on Saturday, October 7, 2017. Plans were to take an Arrow Trailways bus. Several families preferred to take their own vehicles. Some planned to spend the night, and others planned to stay with family in the Dallas area. With only 37 planning to ride the bus, the decision was made to rent vans, which saved our District Two Youth fund an abundance amount of money. Thank you to Brandon Bartek, Frank Horak, and Roy Malcik for taking on the responsibility of driving. We appreciate you guys very much for the safe travel. And, a very special thank you for stopping in West for a kolache! It was a beautiful day with perfect weather. We arrived at 10:30 a.m. to find the lines to the rides with no waiting time. Several youth said they rode at least three rides in less than an hour. That is what you call awesome! Of course, as the day went on, that did change. It was neat seeing the park dec-

orated for Halloween. Once the sun went down, there were a few goblins walking around, and did it ever get crowded! Everyone had a great time! There were several who had never been to Six Flags, and they loved it! Thank you to all who joined in on the fun. We missed those who could not attend due to Saturday football, practices, baseball, and other events. Many years ago, my family was asked to join District Three in for their lock-in and a trip to Six Flags Holiday in the Park. It was so beautiful and a little chilly. But that hot chocolate sure warmed us up. We had a great time. How about it District Two . . . Six Flags Holiday in the Park . . . November 2018? Let me hear from you! Thank you again for an outstanding day. I look forward to seeing you all again soon! Hugs, Patsy Koslovsky District Two Youth Counselor —SPJST—

- Czech by Numbers -

Lesson “11”

elcome to Czech by Numbers, Radio Prague’s Czech learning programme. We will be looking at the number 11 - jedenáct.

W

The figure of 11 is called jedenáctka. Apart from signifying anything from a number 11 tram to room number 11 in a hotel, the word is often used to describe a football team with its 11 players. There is even a book by the 20th-century Czech sports writer and novelist Eduard Bass called “Klapzubova jedenáctka” or “Klapzuba’s Eleven,” which is a fiction about a father who had 11 sons a n d trained them to be a champion football team. In lesson “10”, we spoke about two different types of beer: one called desítka - a 10-degree brew; and the other dvanáctka - a 12-degree brew, which differ in alcohol content. Well, some breweries have started producing something in between, an 11-degree beer called jedenáctka. A similar word is jedenácterák, and it means an 11-pointer, a stag with 11pointed antlers. In the 1950s, the term jedenáctiletka, translated as 11-year-school, was used to describe a type of school which combined elementary and secondary school in one and lasted for 11 years. Since 2001, the number 11 has often been used in connection with the September 11 attacks on the United States. The collocation 11.září - jedenácté září - or the 11th of September, has become a fixed expression in Czech just like in other languages. There is an English idiom which uses the number 11 - “at the eleventh hour.” The Czech equivalent uses a different

Czech Republic Harvest Festival Traditions

The Czech Republic has two harvest festivals. The first one is a church festival called the Posviceni. The second one is called Obzinky. After the harvest has been completed, farm workers make wreaths of rye, wild flowers, straw, or ears of wheat. These wreaths are placed on the heads of the girls, who go to the owner of the land and place a wreath on his head. Everyone joins in a dance and feast. The wreath of the owner is placed in an honorable place until the next harvest. They then eat a dish

known as sauerkraut and a cake called kolache.

Posviceni - Church Harvest Festival This festival is a service held to give thanks to God for a good harvest and also for asking God to bless the grain. There are many folklores associated with the harvest. The amount of food reaped in the season could mean the difference between wealth and starvation. Harvesters would sometimes roll on the ground before a harvest for two reasons: they believed the direct contact with the soil it was believed gave them the strength to work long hours; as well the number of rolls represented the amount of sheaves, or bundles of harvested grain that they

Wednesday, October 25, 2017

rolled into the barn when the work was completed. It was also believed that the last sheaf of grain gathered has the power to both heal and to bring fertility to households and the farm. Parts of the sheaf were to be woven into the wreaths and given to a new bride and groom or then be placed in a new mother’s bed to make sure that the child came into the world safely. They were also hidden in hen houses to make the hens lay more eggs. Grains from the last sheaf harvested were saved and planted with the first seeds sewn for the next spring as a guarantee of a bountiful harvest. One Czech harvester’s tradition leaves a single shock of wheat standing in the

19

field once the harvest is complete. This last shock is tied up with ribbon or straw cord and is called the boroda, which means beard. This was done as way to provide food to the field mice so as they had food and would not go into the barn for grain during the winter. A second tradition was that the last ear of grain to be harvested would be tied with ribbon into a sheaf and then decorated with wildflowers. This was called a dido, meaning grandfather. This was then taken into the landlord’s home and remains there until after Christmas. This was done to bring good luck to the household. In other areas, it is called a baba or old woman. The sheaf is dressed as an old woman and carried into the landlord’s

home, where it is displayed until Christmas or until the next year’s harvest. A third tradition is that at the end of the harvest, harvesters make a large wreath from the last sheaf of grain, interwoven with wildflowers and ears of corn. The wreath may also as tradition has it, be placed on a pretty girl’s head for the procession to the landlord’s home, or as is done now, the home of the farm manager. It may also be placed on a pole or wagon and taken throughout the town. http://www.harvestfestivals.net/czechrepublicfestivals.htm

Czech Harvest Festival - Dozinky in Michigan celebrates ethnicity By Emma Palova August 13, 2015

Bannister, Michigan - For years I’ve been going to the Czech Harvest Festival to honor my Czech heritage. I consider it a miracle that I even found out about it through a press release to the Ionia Sentinel-Standard from an insurance agent.

Considering that it takes place in the middle of nowhere in Central Michigan in the August heat, I think about what made me go that first time. First of all, it must have been curiosity if anyone will speak Czech there at all. I am by nature a lover of new things, whatever they may be. I was in for a surprise. A gentleman sang folk songs in Czech even though he didn’t speak a word of Czech to the lonely tunes of an accordion. A Czech polka band accompanied the hymns at the Czech heritage mass at the Saint Cyril Catholic Church. The hymns were in Czech. The gifts included bread and plum brandy. The harvest festival opens with a parade of dancers and singers carrying dec-

orated rakes and sickles. Then follow the three national anthems, American, Czech, and Slovak. And the absolute highlight were the dances in folk costumes starting with twoyear-olds all the way up to 70. Coming from a region in Moravia in Czech Republic which is big on folk costumes and traditions, I felt a sincere appreciation for dance masters Tom and Diane Bradley. The Bradleys completely recreated the Czech tradition of celebrating the wheat harvest based on research only. The tradition in Bannister will live on despite the aging population of the organizers. The hall published a cookbook dedicated to future generations during the 100th anniversary celebration in 2011, so

Texas Czech Genealogical Society presents 2017 Christmas Ornaments ~Legends, Symbols and Traditions~

Featured this week are four ornaments that are sure to become favorites of anyone who purchases one for his/her own tree or as a gift. The pickle ornament has been offered in the past; however, this pickle is a great deal smaller than the previous one and will prove to be more difficult to find, hidden in the tree. This ornament, along with our entire line of ornaments, as well as a large array of Czech crystal, Czech porcelain, rosaries, dictionaries, maps, books, eggs, aprons, bags, caps, and many other items may be seen at the TCGS Gift Shop, located in the lower level of the SPJST Home Office, 520 North Main, Temple, Texas. Our gift shop is an ideal place to do your Christmas shopping — free of crowds! Ornaments may be ordered by contacting Nancy Machu at nbmachu@aol.com or Leslie Nelson at TCGStexas@gmail.com. Please add the following shipping charges to your ornament order:

Shipping 1 to 4 ornaments - add $9 5 to 9 ornaments - add $13 10 to 14 ornaments - add $19

The Tradition of the Pickle (#SL-10 - $6) There are several versions of this tradition, each attributing the legend to different countries. According to German tradition, as the Christmas tree was decorated, a pickle was hidden in the innermost branches of the tree. On Christmas morning, the first child to find the pickle was rewarded with an additional small present left by St. Nicholas. This tradition is observed by many families today, and as the children grow, the family purchases smaller and smaller pickles to make them more difficult to find. The pickle tradition encourages people to take

time to enjoy the moment with family and friends and, while searching for the pickle, to enjoy the beauty of the tree and its many ornaments along with the beauty of the season, rather than focusing immediately on the gifts under the tree.

The Open Bible (#LN-25 $14) “For unto you is born today in the city of David a Savior which is Christ the Lord.” A favorite ornament of 2017 is the Open Bible, depicting Bethlehem and the star that shone over the manger the night Jesus was born. The inscription is a quote from the second chapter of Luke, which tells the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. During the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, with its shopping, parties, programs, and other activities, this ornament helps to ground us as we remember the true meaning of Christmas.

Legend of the Poinsettia (#SL-20 - $13) One of the most delightful decorations at Christmas is the poinsettia. The flower was brought to the United States from Mexico by Joel R. Poinsett, who served as USA’s first ambassador to Mexico, from 1825 to 1829. The plant was named for him, and the legend of the poinsettia comes from Mexico. It tells of a girl named Maria and her little brother, Pablo. They were very poor but they always looked forward to the Christmas festival. At Christmas time, a large manger scene was set up in the village church, and the days before Christmas were filled with parades and parties. The children loved Christmas, but they

were always rather sad because they had no money to buy presents. They longed to have something that they could give to the church for Baby Jesus, but they could think of nothing. One Christmas Eve, Maria and Pablo set out for the church to attend the service. Along the way, an angel told them to pick some weeds growing along the roadside to take as their gift to the Baby Jesus. The other children teased them when they arrived with their gift, but they knew they had given what they could. Maria and Pablo began placing the green plants around the manger and miraculously, the green top leaves turned into bright red petals, and soon the manger was surrounded by beautiful star-like flowers just like the poinsettias we see today.

The Symbol of the Dove (#SL-22 - $10) A dove with an olive branch in his beak originated with the early Christians, symbolizing the universal symbol of peace and love. Noah sent forth from the ark a dove that returned with an olive branch, indicating the end of the Flood and the beginning of God's covenant with man. The dove also symbolizes the Holy Spirit and signifies marriage and lifelong love. In the earliest Christian art, the dove represented the peace of the soul rather than civil peace. The pristine whiteness of the dove represents purity, hope for peace and the forgiveness we obtain from God and each other. The reverse side of this ornament explains the Symbol of the Dove. they will not forget the recipes of their ancestors. We always eat the main meal at the ZCBJ hall either inside or on the large porch. That brings me to the staple of the festival which is Czech food. The women of the hall prepare traditional Czech fare that is dumplings, sauerkraut, fresh cucumber salad, ham, and chicken. The dessert is either apple strudel or rolls filled with nuts. Of course, no Czech festival would be complete without beer. Most of the participants have never been to Czech or Slovak republics. I admire the zeal that has lasted for more than 100 years. https://emmapalova.com/2015/08/13/czech-harvestfestival-dozinky/
