hat a very special day it was on Thursday, November 9! I accompanied President Vanicek to Velehrad, Texas, which is near La Grange. The Lodge 19, Velehrad hall was moved from its home beside Velehrad Cemetery to Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange. The building was constructed in about 1896 as a CSPS lodge. John Kana and his team with Kana Bros., Inc. House Leveling and Moving in La Grange took great care of the Lodge 19 hall during its move from Velehrad to La Grange. We followed the move for quite a way during its approximately five-hour trek through the countryside. I enjoyed seeing - and appreciating - the Czech communities and street names like Knezek, Klekar, Kubenka, Darilek, Okruhlik, Baca, and Jares. The hall arrived at TCHCC at 1 p.m. and was welcomed by TCHCC and SPJST representatives. The hall will be restored, and a grand opening is scheduled for May 20, 2018. It will have a new life in the Czech village at TCHCC where visitors will tour it and learn about SPJST and its early days. Thanks to David and Janie Bucek of Lodge 151, Wharton and the SPJST District Six Cemetery Organization for maintaining the hall through the years.
Happy Thanksgiving! One of the joys of Thanksgiving is wishing you a happy and healthy holiday season. At this time of Thanksgiving, we pause to count our blessings, and this is the perfect time to thank you - our dear Věstník readers. We are deeply grateful for your membership in SPJST and for your support of the Věstník. May you and your family be blessed on Thanksgiving and throughout the rest of the year.

Lodge 32, Victoria Christmas social Thursday, Dec. 14
We will have our Christmas social in the Victoria Mall meeting room (by Chick-Fil-A and Sears) on Thursday, December 14, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. This year, we’re keeping it simple. If each household brings their favorite finger food, it will be a great party! It can be sweet or savory; it’s entirely up to you. Lodge 32 continues to remember “our family in need” so please be generous with non-perishable items. They are so appreciative of anything and everything they receive. Bring items on the 14th, and they will be delivered to our family before Christmas. We all know what this season is all about. We can still enjoy the commercial side of Christmas, but keep in your heart and mind while shopping and attending parties that Christ is the reason for the season. Join me in keeping Christ in Christmas. When someone says, “happy holidays” – respond with “Have a Blessed and Merry Christmas.” I love hearing all the traditional Christmas songs we’ve known since childhood such as “Jingle Bells” . . . “Frosty The Snowman” . . . “Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer” . . . “The Twelve Days Of Christmas” . . . “Jolly Old St Nicholas” . . . “Let It Snow.” We all have our favorites, and we love to sing them! Then there’s the “Good King Wenceslaus” . . . I think everyone is fa-

miliar with the music. It’s a very simple tune, and it was one of the songs I played at my first piano recital. But have you ever listened closely to the lyrics? It’s not your typical Christmas carol, but it is very popular. Google it, and read the lyrics; it will warm your heart. Then listen to it on YouTube. King Wenceslaus is the Patron Saint of the Czech Republic. And, that brings me to the carols I love – the ones that are truly about the birth of Jesus: “O Little Town of Bethlehem” . . . “Go Tell It On The Mountain” . . . “The Little Drummer Boy” . . . “Joy To The World” . . . “What Child Is This?” . . . “O Come All Ye Faithful” . . . “Away In A Manger” . . . “Silent Night.” We can enjoy all aspects of Christmas while keeping Christ in this season. Have a Blessed and Merry Christmas! Fraternally, Kathy Ahlstrom FAC/Reporter —SPJST—

TCGS presents 2017 Christmas ornaments Legends - Symbols Traditions
Ornaments in the Legends, Symbols, and Traditions offering are not all made in the Czech Lands. Depending on the origin of the legend, symbol, or tradition, the ornaments generally come from that area of the world. Today, we will concentrate on the ornaments that were made in the Czech Republic, along with two really cute ornaments to commemorate the birth of a baby in 2017.
Peacock Feathers Ornament #SL-38 - $11 This beautiful, deep, teal glass ornament reminds one of the plumage of a peacock, standing tall and proud. The lines of this ornament are gracefully applied to both the front and back of the ornament and are accented by a dazzling acrylic gem and glitter accents of gold and royal blue. This handcrafted ornament from the Czech Republic will be an outstanding addition to your tree this Christmas season. Frosted Reflector Ball #SL-36 - $8 Mindful of the ornaments of yesterday, this gorgeous, frosted pearl ball fea-

The Tradition of Santa Claus SL-4 - $11 Who wouldn’t love having this rolypoly Santa Claus on his Christmas tree this year? People far and wide know about the tradition of Santa Claus, which arrived in America with the first Europeans who came ashore. Even though he

✟The Christmas Mass✟
(1796)
Jakub Šimon Jan Ryba (26 October 1765 – 8 April 1815)
A staple of the Czech Christmas— accompanying fried carp and potato salad, Christmas cookies, and fairy tales—is Jakub Jan Ryba’s Christmas Mass. Composed by a small-town school teacher in 1796, the work has become the most popular piece of Czech Christmas music ever written; it is performed in every Czech church during the holiday season with the national goal of no Czech citizen needing to
travel any greater distance than 30 kilometers to hear a live performance of the work during the Christmas season, and Czech National Television has even produced a full-length animated version of the mass. Although Ryba was a prolific composer, credited with over 1,400 pieces of both religious and non-religious nature, the composer had no idea that this simple work would become a national icon. In his list of compositions from 178298, Ryba records the Christmas Mass as
being “one of seven pastoral masses, of which one Czech.” The composer, himself, was unappreciated. During his lifetime, Ryba lived in constant conflict with the local pastor and the church council over his frequent requests for the repair of the school building and an insufferable lack of money that left him unable to care for his family. On the morning of his death, Ryba attended morning mass; later, that afternoon, he was found in a dense forest with his throat cut with a razor.

Česká mše vánoční v Praha, Texas St. Mary’s Church of the Assumption 821 FM 1295 • Praha, Texas Sunday, December 3, 2017 at 3 p.m.
To open this year’s season of Advent, you are invited to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear Česká mše vánoční - Czech Christmas Mass as it was performed in Rožmitál pod Třemšínem (south Bohemia) on Christmas Eve 1796. This performance will be an historically accurate re-creation of the first performance in Rožmitál pod Třemšínem, given in 1796 by “a small handful of untrained villagers, the organist’s wife, and the organist himself singing from the keyboard” and with performers dressed in period costume. The village priest, Fr. Kašpar Zachar, preached a “fiery and overly lengthy sermon that upset the festive spirit of many who were present” under the title “The Waste and Folly of the Season.” Although the text of that sermon has not been preserved, the accompanying sermon on December 3 will be an attempt to re-create the tenor of what Fr. Zachar might have wanted to express in his thoughts to accompany that first performance of Česká mše vánoční. The performance will take place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 3, 2017, in St. Mary’s Church of the Assumption, 821 FM 1295 in Praha, Texas. A reception will follow with an opportunity to meet Mr. Zdeněk Beránek, Deputy Head of Mission at the Czech Embassy in Washington, D.C. This event is sponsored by the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas in partnership with the College of Music at the University of North Texas. For information, contact Randall Barta 361-865-3888 or 281-734-6235.
VĚSTNÍK
Because of its folky character and simplicity, Ryba’s Christmas Mass is excluded from the Catholic liturgy. On the other hand, it is precisely because of its character and simplicity—and the fact that the mass is performed in Czech rather than in Latin—that the work has become so ingrained in Czech tradition. Its format is that of a school nativity play, and it is likely that such a local performance inspired Ryba to compose this particular mass. The music consists largely of only four chords, but the seamless changes of key, the shifting of strong beats to weak and vice versa, and the addition and omission of measures that alter the expected phrase structure serve to surprise us and to hold our attention; indeed, there is literally “nothing” in the mass—no complication, no affectation, no complication, nothing contrived, and nothing academic . . . and yet it is angelically perfect. And . . . “bagpipes,” (dudy) which were common in western Bohemia and which you will hear replicated in the Credo and Final Chorus movements, in the form of the cello-organ solos. •••
The December 3, 2017, performance at St. Mary’s Church of the Assumption in Praha, Texas, of Jakub Jan Ryba’s Christmas Mass will be heard in a nearauthentic replication of what the congregation in the village of Rožmitál pod Tremšínem experienced in 1796. Although the work was written for four soloists and full choir, Ryba would not have had such a large group of singers in the village. The four soloists will serve as both “soloists” and “village choir.” Although the work was written to be accompanied by full orchestra, Ryba would not have had such an ensemble in his tiny village nor would he have been able, being so poorly paid, to hire professional musicians from the surrounding villages. The mass will be performed as it was probably originally performed, with the composer at the keyboard playing all of the string and wind parts and accompanied, in the older-fashioned Baroque style, by a cellist. Performers will be dressed in period clothing, although it’s likely that the musicians in 1796 also wrapped themselves in heavy coats due to the “bitter cold of the evening.” And finally—thanks to the miracle of digitalization—vocalists will be accompanied by the exact replication of what would have come from Ryba’s own keyboard in the Kostel Povýšení sv. Kříže (Church of the Exaltation of the
VĚSTNÍK
Holy Cross) in Rožmitál pod Tremšínem—a shrill wind-organ sound with a weak upper register and with a delayed response-time in the keyboard that requires us (this afternoon) to slow the speed of performance from the speed at which the mass is typically performed in the 21st century. Performers will be: Soloists and Choir—Julianna Emanski, soprano; Hannah Ceniseros, alto; Barrett Radziun, tenor; and Brock Johnson, bassbaritone; Orchestra and Organist—Christopher Phillpott, cello; and Thomas Sovík, organ. The performance tour is supported by funding from the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas Frank J. and Hermine Hurta Kostohryz Residency in Czech Music and Culture and the Dr. Jim and Rose Bezdek Endowment Fund Celebrating Czech Music and Culture. —SPJST—
