A

new year is upon us, and it’s time to say “see you later” to one of our Věstník/Communication Department staff members. Jerry Pechal has worked in the Věstník/Communication Department for the past four years. He was also a youth club member and served as the 2012-2013 State King. He’s a very special young man with a strong work ethic, and we are going to miss him at the Home Office. Jerry will be leaving Texas at the beginning of January to begin a career as a flight attendant. We wish him the very best with this new opportunity.

Thanks to the many members who have contacted us about not receiving their 2018 SPJST calendar. The calendar was not included in the 2017 budget. It was reconsidered in the July Supreme Lodge meeting. However, No 2018 SPJST Calendars

Wedding Ring Quilt holds Many Family Memories for Lodge 38, Kovar Member Dorothy Jean Lastovica

Lodge 38, Kovar member Dorothy Jean Lastovica displays a quilt that was made from a wedding gown that belonged to her aunt Mary Srubar. “When I married Stanley Lastovica on August 23, 1969, I wore her gown,” Dorothy says. “And on our 25th anniversary, Aunt Mary gave me the gown.” Dorothy’s friend June Parker made the quilt for Dorothy’s 70th birthday on June 26, 2017. The daybed-size, wedding ring quilt was pieced and quilted by June, who also made a pillow from the top of the gown’s front and back. The rest of the gown along with Dorothy’s honeymoon travel outfit were also made into the quilt. At one end of the quilt is the christening gown of Dorothy’s daughter Sheri; bibs of grandsons Matt, age 15, and Ethan, age 6; and the christening bonnet of her granddaughter Elizabeth, age 10. The other end features the couple’s names, wedding date, and picture.

Lodge 180, Burleson members meet for Christmas party

We had our annual Lodge 180, Burleson meeting/Christmas party on Saturday, December 9, 2017, with a great number of members and guests in attendance. We all met at Villa Dianna Restaurant in east Burleson for a delicious Italian meal. I do not believe that a single soul left hungry or lacking in great Italian food or satisfying drinks. All guests and members signed a register so that we could have a memento of their attendance. Guests in attendance were John and Diana Engelke, Frank and Connie Horak, Joey Babina and Nicky Babina, and Robert and Patricia Sill. Members in attendance were Rhonda and Joe Hurtik, Colin Hurtik and Gracie Medina, Sandy and Logan Almonte, Verna Mason, Dena and Dylan Bowden,

Gordon Cox, Carmon and Joe Babina, Leon Flusche, and Nancy and “Red” Kelly. A very short presentation of donations for the Czech Heritage Museum and 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund were presented to District Three Director John Engelke and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Horak by Lodge 180 President Nancy Kelly. The donations will be delivered to the appropriate people at the Home Office in Temple. Following this short order of business, everyone settled into visiting with their neighbors, those at the other end of our long table, or all along and in between folks. It was lot of talking, laughter, and cheerfulness. I found an address on Facebook that I thought some of you might be interested in and feel the need to participate as I did. I chose a pretty Christmas card to send to an unknown soldier that is in recovery for injuries. While I was preparing this card, I was wondering if

he would be remembered by anyone else—just me or does he or she have a family somewhere that prays and contacts them on a consistent basis. After I signed the card with our names, I wrote a short note telling that person how much they were appreciated and how much they were loved. By the time I had finished that card, I was crying as I am now in reminiscence. Please, if you feel the need as I did, please send a card. The address is: A Recovering American Soldier, c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center, 6900 Georgia Avenue NW , Washington, D.C. 20307-5001. Lodge 180, Burleson wishes each of you a very merry Christmas with bountiful blessings, good health, and happiness with many goodnesses for the new year of 2018.

Next Meeting—January 9 The next meeting is scheduled for the second Tuesday, which is January 9, 2018. John and Diana Engelke will be in attendance as they will be conducting the installation of officers for 2018. Nancy S. Kelly, President/Reporter —SPJST—

It was so wild! Husband Bobby Shropshire sat in Joyce’s chair during the exchange and at the conclusion of the game, he forgot the gift was hers and not his. He opened it amid a lot of laughter and tried to rewrap it in a hurry. Oh my gosh . . . what a guy (smile). And, there was an abundance of food left over . . . enough for us to take home for another meal or to share with someone who couldn’t be with us. All in all, we had a blast and a wonderful time just being together for another day. Kudos go out to President Cathy for her determination to keep making this Circle special. She always goes way above and beyond of what is required of her, and we appreciate her immensely. We are so lucky to have her guiding us. Thank you so much, Cathy. Lodge 47, Seaton youth rides float with Princess Poppy

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx zips off to collect asteroid Sample By Sarah Benton Feitlinger

I had a lot of fun riding on the Trolls Christmas float. I got to ride in the Temple and Rogers parades with my brother. I love Poppy so I sat by her! Sydney Bilbrey, age 5 —SPJST—

After almost a year of orbiting the sun, on September 22, 2017, NASA’s OSIRIS-REx (Origins-Spectral Interpretation-Resource Identification-Security-Regolith Explorer) made its closest flyby of Earth. Moving at speeds of about 19,000 mph, the spacecraft passed within 11,000 miles of the planet’s surface just south of Chile, before zooming over Antarctica. The carefully orchestrated encounter was designed to take advantage of the Earth’s gravity to help launch OSIRIS-REx towards a tiny asteroid named Bennu. Referred to as the slingshot effect, or gravity assist, the ingenious method helps propel spacecrafts to great distances without expending precious fuel.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club partners with Temple High students for event success

On November 12, 2017, Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club hosted a membership drive in connection with the adult lodge’s chili lunch. The youth club provided games and prizes for youth. “A huge thank you to Temple High School volunteers from the athletic trainers group and Student Council,” says Youth Leader Amber Bartek. “It was all made possible with the help and coordination of Lodge 47 member Windee Skrabanek . . . thank you so much! And, thank you, parents, for all the donations of candy and cupcakes.

Measuring just about 500 m (1640 ft) in diameter, Bennu is the smallest object NASA has ever attempted to orbit. Peter Antreasian, the navigation team chief from Kinet-X Aerospace responsible for getting the space probe to its destination, says, “The asteroid’s small size and low gravity makes OSIRIS-REx the most challenging mission that I have worked on.” However, of the 7,000 Near-Earth asteroids, Bennu was one of only five that met the required criteria for distance, size, and composition. It was close enough to Earth, large enough for a spacecraft to make contact with and, most importantly, had a primitive composition, meaning it contains the organic molecules believed to be the building blocks of life on Earth.

asteroids — rocks that have stable positions in the Earth’s orbit around the sun. Though it was unable to find any, OSIRIS-REx’s time in space allowed NASA to tweak its path to ensure it would reach Bennu. If all goes according to plan, the spacecraft will enter Bennu’s orbit in August 2018 and start surveying the asteroid, as well as mapping out potential sampling sites. In July 2020, OSIRISREx will make contact with the space rock for about 5 seconds and release a burst of nitrogen gas to stir up the surface rocks and soil, which will be instantly scooped up by a sampler head attached to the space probe’s robotic arm. In March 2021, OSIRIS-REx and its precious cargo will begin the journey home, with an expected arrival on Earth by September 2023. Edward Beshore of the University of Arizona, Deputy Principal Investigator for the mission says, “By bringing this material back to Earth, we can do a far more thorough analysis than we can with instruments on a spacecraft, because of practical limits on the size, mass, and energy consumption of what can be flown.” The expert adds, “We will also set aside returned materials for future generations to study with instruments and capabilities we can’t even imagine now.” While this may seem like a lot of money and effort to collect a tiny rock sample, it may be well worth it.
