SPJST Insurance Department announced that Richard A. Hrbacek has been named the Operations Manager. “We are very thrilled to have Richard join us at SPJST,” Vice President Hiram Dixon stated. “He brings 19 years of financial services and Richard A. Hrbacek insurance knowledge, and we know he will be a great asset to SPJST.” Richard earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Edward’s University with a concentration in finance. His professional experience comes from the investment and insurance industry. His primary business objective has been assisting agencies, producers, and advi-
sors with advanced marketing support, creating new and recurring revenue by utilizing a sales approach that differentiates what is being offered in the marketplace. Richard’s team served as the sales partner and marketing organization to aide in the sale of insurance, investments, and retirement products used in financial planning, focusing on wealth transfer and succession planning. “I am excited to be part of a great fraternal organization,” Operations Manager Hrbacek said. “I look forward to bringing services to the SPJST membership.” Mr. Hrbacek will oversee the sales and marketing programs of SPJST, establish sales quotas for territories, assist in managing budgets, and evaluate sales performance. He will also manage and develop marketing programs and materials such as advertising, event support, and online promotions.

The Věstník has been featuring a recipe each week from the winning entries at State Youth Achievement Day and past SPJST Cookbooks. We have received a lot of good feedback about this so we will continue including a recipe as often as we can. I don’t have much time to cook, unfortunately, but I love to read cookbooks. I am always looking for new recipes and seeking out fun food ideas! We would love to receive recipes from our dear readers to include in the Věstník. If you have a recipe that you would like to share, please send it to me. And, if you have a photo or a story to include with the recipe, send that in, too. I look forward to receiving your recipes! Squeezebox Band featuring Ted Lange and Mollie B performs at Lodge 24, Cyclone this Saturday
On July 29, 2000, my parents went to a polka festival in Gibbon, Minnesota, and saw many bands. My dad had his camcorder and tried to get a little of each band to share with Daniel and me when he and my mom returned home. On the video was one of the most popular bands in the area - Jim Busta Band. Dad was able to video four songs by the Busta Band including songs such as “At the Spring Waltz,” “Deer Waltz,” “Polka Celebration,” and “When I Sleep.” On each song, Jim’s daughter Mollie was playing and singing. It was very obvious that she would soon become an excellent musician - outshining many of the others at the festival, even at her young age. Well, years went by and Mollie continued to play with her dad’s band, but soon Mollie Busta became known as Mollie B, and before too long, the name “Mollie B” from Spring Grove, Minnesota, became a household name in many of the homes of Texas polka fans. After her marriage to Ted Lange, they teamed up and formed
the “Squeezebox Band.” Both Ted and Mollie are very talented musicians and play a variety of instruments and styles of music. We are honored to have the “Squeezebox Band” come to Flag Hall - SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone and perform for a four-hour dance this Saturday, January 20, 2018, from 7 to 11 p.m. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the kitchen will be serving those delicious hamburgers, as well as sausage wraps and other snacks. I am sure the bar will have your favorite ice cold beverage ready for you. Many of you already have tickets and are awaiting the exciting event. Tables are filling up quickly, and people are coming from near and far. If you would like tickets, call Linda Wilde at 254-985-2258. Advance tickets are $15 per person and $20 per person that night at the door. We hope to see all of you for a night of fun, dancing, and visiting! Linda M. Wilde, Treasurer Lodge 24, Cyclone —SPJST—

Lodge 47, Seaton members celebrate Christmas
Wednesday, January 17, 2018
Dear Vestnik Readers, SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton held its annual Christmas party on Sunday, December 10, 2017. It was great to see so many members and guests attending. Thank you to youth club members and leaders Amber Bartek, Sharla Pechal, and Chelsea Bilbrey for the nice memorial service in which 21 of our deceased members were remembered. Thank you to family and youth members who lit a candle in memory of their loved one. Each family was given the candle and a framed poem, “Merry

Christmas from Heaven.” Youth members shared with the audience a cute Christmas skit and sang Christmas songs. What joy came by singing “Here Comes Santa Claus.” The jolly, happy man came in bringing joy not only to the young, but to all in attendance. Thank you, Santa, for dropping by for a visit. Members, we encourage you to bring your children or grandchildren and get involved with the Seaton Youth Club. Their meetings are held on the first Sunday of each month at 1 p.m. at Star Hall. Everyone enjoyed the social hour of drinks and visiting before the evening meal was served. The turkey and dressing meal was delicious. Side dishes and desserts furnished by members and guests were unbelievable. Thank you, everyone!
All Around Czechs: Celebrating the New Year Early By Justin Everett • SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone
With more than 100 people in attendance, it is easy to see why the All Around Czechs played a great show at SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone on Saturday, December 30, 2017. I was so glad to see that the cold weather did not stop the polka dance-goers from showing up. The weather here has been so cold lately, I have to remind myself that I live in Texas, not the North Pole! The All Around Czechs played plenty of hot polkas to keep everyone dancing and feeling upbeat. The guys played beautifully and kept the polka beat going. The cold weather also did not stop Daniel Wilde from grilling those deli-
cious hamburgers. Originally, I had planned to not eat one, but the smell of the patties was calling my name. The polka dance attendees must have enjoyed the burgers since we sold out. I really enjoyed how the All Around Czechs made everyone feel appreciated by playing for an extra hour and 30 minutes. The guys were supposed to end at 10 p.m., but everyone loved their music so much that they played a little bit longer. If that doesn’t show that the All Around Czechs care about their fans, I don’t know what does. The band closed out the wonderful evening by doing a sing-along of polka favorites as everyone gathered in front of the stage and joined in.
Lodge 24 would like to thank all of the volunteers who helped work the kitchen and bar. We would also like to thank everyone who attended the dance and, of course, the All Around Czechs for playing such marvelous music.
Squeezebox this Saturday Our next event is on Saturday, January 20. On that night, there will be a dance with music by Squeezebox featuring Mollie B and Ted Lange. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the dance is from 7 to 11 p.m. Call Linda Wilde at 254-985-2258 for more information. Happy New Year, everyone! —SPJST—

Jeb’s Critter Spotlight The Texas Rat Snake “Bob”
By Jeb Lapeyrolerie SPJST Camps Executive Director
Happy New Year everyone! I’m back with another critter we love to hate – the Texas Rat Snake. The rat snake is found all over our state and into L o u i s i a n a , Arkansas, and Oklahoma. Their color varies widely and seems to depend on the area in which they are Jeb Lapeyrolerie found. They are also excellent climbers. If you have been to camp you have probably seen a rat snake. We affectionately call them all “Bob.” Who can be scared of a snake named Bob, right? Rat snakes are very important at camp because they eat a lot of pests like rats and mice. Because of them, we don’t have to use as much pesticide to control the rodent population. This is good because the poisons we use can harm other good critters. You could say Bob is a staff member and that killing mice and other rodents is his job. Besides rats and mice, rat snakes pick their meals from a large menu of other small animals. They like frogs, lizards, toads, birds, insects, and eggs. You may have heard people refer to them as chicken snakes because they do like to get into chicken coops and eat chicken eggs and sometimes chicks. In this case, they are not a friend to the farmer, but they don’t know they are doing something wrong; they just see an easy meal. Like with other wildlife, we have a

ter in La Grange. The lodge hall will be restored. Dedication of the lodge hall is planned for May. Next, David stated a limestone road is needed for the SPJST Velehrad Cemetery. The limestone road couldn’t be put in the cemetery until the lodge hall was moved. He is waiting to meet with a contractor to give him a bid for a limestone road. The two other SPJST cemeteries have limestone roads. Under new business, Janie Bucek made a motion to give $100 to the
“leave it alone” policy with the rat snakes. Sometimes when we run across them, they will shake their tail back and forth to make a rattling sound. They are hoping to fool us into thinking they are a rattlesnake. What they are really saying is, “Hey I’m here – leave me alone!” If you do corner a rat snake, they will defend themselves. This is where they get their aggressive reputation from. They do not chase people. All they want is to get away from the big, scary human. I know we have all heard stories about rat snakes making their way into people’s homes. Believe me, they much prefer to be outside. If they are inside, there is something there that is attracting them. It could be water when it is super dry outside. To help with this, you could create a drip fountain. To create these, all you need is a bit of hose and a flat rock. Attach the hose to a faucet and run it to a shady area and let it drip just a tiny bit. You don’t want it to create a pool or puddle. This little drip will provide moisture for many different critters. Another thing that attracts them indoors is food. If you see one inside, it may mean that you have other critters running around your home. When you see Bob around camp, just say “hi” and leave him alone so he can do his job. If Bob happens to be near one of the cabins, all you have to do is let a staff member know and we’ll help him get to where he is supposed to be. —SPJST—

Lodge 191, Lufkin hosts New Year’s Eve dance; readies for 2018 activities
Happy New Year, everyone! Was it ever cold for the New Year’s Eve dance! There were a lot of sick folks during this time, and the weather was so cold. I hope everyone is well now, and the weather will soon be a little warmer. The band Jurango did an excellent job at the New Year’s Eve dance. Everyone had a very good time bringing in the new year. There was good food and all kinds of party favors. If you were not there, you missed a good time. Decorations were provided by Sarah Oliver and Ruth Welch. Be sure to thank these ladies for doing such a good job. Glenn Lenderman and Friends played for the Christmas dance on December 15, where we collected unwrapped toys to be given to Salvation Army for the children of Lufkin. The Lufkin Dance Club and SPJST Lodge 191, Lufkin combined their collections of toys, and two big, plastic bags full of toys were delivered to Salvation Army on Monday, December 16. The organization was very appreciative of the donations. As of this writing, the January band has not been booked, but when it is, an

i h What to Eat in Prague Features and Advice Scott Hartbeck October 30, 2017
Have you ever heard anyone say: “You want to go out for some Czech food tonight”? For most of us, that’s a “no”. Czech restaurants aren’t very prevalent in cities across the world, but one trip to the Czech Republic will show you why that’s a real shame. The country’s cuisine is distinctive and diverse—but definitely delicious— with the capital Prague being a great place to sample a range of both traditional
and modern takes on Czech dishes. Here are just a few of the culinary delights you can expect to see on menus there, along with recommendations on where best to eat them. All are best accompanied with a cold Czech beer.

braised in stock. The stock is then pureed and blended with cream to create a sauce which is poured over the beef. Svícková is usually served with bread dumplings - knedlík, cranberry sauce, and a decadent dollop of whipped cream. Where to eat it: The atmospheric (and historic) beer hall - U Medvídku.
Koláče You may be familiar with the American version of koláče - often spelled kolache on this side of the globe, but the version sold in the Czech Republic is a completely different treat altogether. It’s sweet for a start, and the soft, fluffy round dough usually encases any variety of fillings such as jam, poppy seeds or quark cheese.
Where to eat it: Pekárna Kabát have several locations around the city and take pride in their poppy seed and fruit koláče.
Buchty These sweet yeasted buns are baked together in a large pan, giving them the
appearance of golden Hawaiian rolls. They are filled with jam (traditionally plum-flavored), ground poppy seeds, or sweet curd and are ripped apart then devoured - preferably while still warm.

Where to eat them: Cafe Lounge is an elegant and relaxing place to enjoy a couple of these buns with a coffee.
Kulajda This creamy soup is prepared according to many different recipes around the country, but Prague locals like to take it cooked w i t h mushrooms, potatoes, and dill a n d topped with a poached egg. The base of the soup is made from sour cream or milk, but it almost always has a sharp, slightly vinegary flavor. Where to eat it: Cafe Imperial is always first out of a local’s mouth for slurping on the best kulajda.

Trdelnik This sweet, sugared roll of dough is sold from street stands the city over. It is made by rolling a length of dough over a l a r g e m e t a l tube, then baking it
and covering it with a good dusting of sugar and crushed walnuts. Most trdelnik are eaten just like this, warm from the oven, but certain sellers across the city have also started filling the rolls with Nutella, ice cream, and other new-fangled fillings.
Where to eat it: A whole host of street stands, bakeries, and window booths around the city.

Pecené Koleno Many people believe that you can’t say you’ve been to Prague until you’ve eaten this local delicacy. Pecené koleno - pork knuckle - and is exactly as the name suggests: a large, meaty pork knuckle, whose skin will often be crispy or highly seasoned. The knuckle may be served alone, with a few condiments on the side, or with potato noodles and vegetables.
Where to eat it: You’ll probably have to wait for a table to eat the succulent pork knuckle at Mlejnice; but it’s definitely worth it. https://www.travelpulse.com/news/features/what-to-eat-in-prague.html —SPJST—

SPJST Home Office Santas Grant Christmas Wish for Temple Resident
SPJST Home Office collected funds from among staff members to grant a special Christmas wish for a Temple resident through the Temple Police Department’s Blue Santa program. The program receives cash and toy donations that are distributed to youth in need in the Temple community. The program received a special request from a family with an 11-year-old granddaughter and a 49-year-old son who is mentally challenged. The son, who has never owned or ridden a bicycle, wrote a letter asking Santa for one. Program leaders determined that a three-wheeled bicycle was the solution. The bike, however, exceeded the normal amount allocated towards the purchase of gifts in the program. So Santas at the SPJST Home Office gathered their dollars together and purchased the bicycle. Pictured above, Home Office staff present the bicycle to Temple Police Officers and Blue Santa representatives on Thursday, December 14. RIGHT: The recipient is all smiles with his new bicycle.

Texas Polka News features Kubos Brothers
The Kubos Brothers have been on the Texas music scene for years, and are still bringing their talents to Oprys and well-known country, Western swing, and polka bands. Find out more about this talented band of brothers in the January issue of Texas Polka News. It’s National Polka Month! Learn about the roots of polka, and plan to attend the dance on Saturday, January 27 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the KC Hall in Schulenburg. It’s a fundraiser for the International Polka Association, and the Dujka Brothers will provide the music. Editor Gary E. McKee writes an interesting column about music greats who left this world on January 1, and he remembers country star Mel Tillis. Justin Everett reviews the new CD from the Czechaholics, celebrating their 15th anniversary. He also writes a tribute to his great uncle Lawrence Vrazel, and profiles DJ Michael Craig. John Dujka brings Musings
from the Road, Texas Folklife presents its Master Fiddler Awards, and Theresa Parker reports on her evening as an honoree at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center. Of course, we have your listings of dances, festivals, and live music events. Texas Polka News will mark its 30th anniversary in 2018. To celebrate, the paper has launched a subscription drive to increase readership, giving back to its supporters. For every new subscription or renewal from now through May 2018, TPN will donate $5 of the subscription price to SPJST Youth Programs. Not only will SPJST youth benefit from the donated subscription money, $3,000 in prizes will be awarded to the club or organization that brings in the most new and renewed subscriptions. Author Michael Gruenbaum announces that his book - “Somewhere There Is Still a Sun” - is available in several languages, the latest in Czech Nekde Jeste Sviti Slunce - having been published in Prague recently. “Somewhere There Is Still a Sun” is a recent book published by Simon and Schuster, which describes first-hand experiences of a teenager during the Holocaust in Czechoslovakia (1939 to 1945). Mr. Gruenbaum has corresponded with Czech Ambassadors and Consuls all over the world recently, and has learned that many of them are making preparations for celebratory events to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Czechoslovakia, and many of them feel that the book coming out

For instance, the Czech Ambassador in Canberra, Australia has ordered copies and will hand them out as prizes to children who won this year’s annual International Arts Contest, which had 25,000 submissions. Should you know of preparations of such similar festivities and could use Czech copies of Mr. Gruenbaum’s book for this purpose, please order directly from his publisher: petr.karas@pk3.cz. The English edition is best ordered from Amazon. The book has received the following awards:
