he Supreme Lodge met last week in Temple. One of their discussions was reconsidering the annual SPJST calendar. Officers and directors reviewed the feedback from many members and the recommendation from the Publication Committee. The Supreme Lodge approved to print a 2019 calendar and mail it to the members who request it. A request form will be placed in the privacy notice that will be mailed to all members in the spring. Members will be asked to respond through a mailback card, email, or online if they wish to receive the calendar. Members who request a calendar will then receive a 2019 calendar. Thanks to all members who contacted us, and a special thanks to those members who shared their stories about how meaningful the calendar has been through the years.

Many of us don’t do winter weather well in Texas. When it comes to ice and snow, we become the big, strong elephant that shrinks at the sight of a teeny, tiny mouse! What super cold, winter weather days we had last week. Many schools and businesses across the state were closed, and shelves in grocery stores were emptied by Texans stocking up just in case. While some of the state was covWinter is here!

Vestnik story brings fond memories

Melanie, This morning, here at the office, I took a few moments to read my online Vestnik. Christmastime always brings emo-

Reading the Editor’s Note – Christmas Story: For the Man Who Hated Christmas . . . reminded me of so many blessings that my family and I have, and I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for bringing my fond memories to the forefront. Vincent Hegwood, CBPA Lodge 88, Houston —SPJST—

On Saturday, January 13, 2018, a total of 48 players turned out for the SPJST State Progressive 42 Domino Tournament hosted at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. The traditional SPJST tournaments are being held in Temple. “The Home Office provides a great central location and a comfortable gathering place,” State Fraternal Director Horak said. Players drove into Temple from as far away as Ennis, El Campo, Hallettsville, Waco, and Dime Box. Players enjoyed snacking on kolaches from Kolache Kitchen and grilled barbecue chicken and sides during the lunch hour from Ratibor Country Grill. “Thank you Margie Faltesek for

Dear Readers, The monthly meeting of Lodge 25, Ennis was Thursday, January 11, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. The monthly supper was simple yet perfect for the cold weather we’ve been having - okra gumbo served over rice with side salad, fluffy rolls, and

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Margaret Krajca. A moment of silence was observed in memory of James Williford. Minutes to the last meeting were read by Secretary Pat Fowler, and accepted after a few minor corrections were made. Our amazing volunteers made 379 strudels in a combined total of 143.5 hours. We sold 375. If you missed out over the holidays, we still have four frozen, unbaked, strudels for sale. Under old business, the club room replaced a broken television; a wireless speaker system has been installed; a CD player has been purchased; and a tankless water heater was installed. Under new business, the need for an onsite ATM machine was discussed. A motion was made to move forward with having an ATM unit installed prior to the upcoming annual fundraiser. The

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth

Here we are at the beginning of another year and has Mother Nature been a little whacky so far! The extreme cold for us, the wildfires in California, now the mudslides, snow, and horrible traffic in middle Tennessee. She certainly has a bee in her bonnet. Hopefully, everyone reading this note is warm and cozy. The meeting of Lodge 92’s Ladies Circle took place on the Tuesday, January 9, 2018, with 39 members and several guests attending. President Cathy Simmank led the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and welcomed Aleesha Barrett and Gertrude Sherman, guests for the day. Aleesha is Lorinda Manasco’s granddaughter and comes with her frequently, and Gertrude assists Mary Ann Adcock in her travels around town. We are always happy to have them. Vice President Janet Basham presented an interesting devotion. Janet is a huge fan of Saint Mother Teresa and quite often brings a message from her for us to think about. Once again, she gave us thought provoking questions and answers. Minutes were read by Secretary Joan Shropshire and approved without any

changes. The financial report was presented by Margaret Laymance. Marlene Bass reported on those whom she sent get well wishes to. Doris Overstreet and Marilyn Di’Orio had been under the weather, but were with us this day. Marlene also reported that she had delivered food that was collected in December to the Food Bank of Tarrant County Each January, we decide what charities we might support. This year, we will start with donating money to Lodge 92 and to Heather’s Ole Time School. If one remembers, the head of the school came with several of her students to give us information on “what they are all about.” It’s a small school that helps challenged individuals of all ages, and it is just across the street from the lodge hall. Sherri Kubala Watkins is involved with their activities. Other topics discussed were dues (to be paid by the March meeting) and any suggestions to make our meetings more interesting and meaningful. Some ideas were tossed around so we’ll see what happens down the line. Shirley Martin and Betty Krenek had on their running shoes as they were the only hostesses on hand to set up lunch. They did a great job, and there were some really good dishes shared. Lorinda Manasco, Bessie Ellsworth, Theresa Clay, and Robert Kurtnick were our birthday celebrants for January. We

How Children Perceive Their Grandparents Submitted by Mark Rebecek Lodge 79, Corpus Christi

O O O Presenting 2018 Officers O O O SPJST Lodge 97, Placedo

1. I was in the bathroom, putting on my makeup, under the watchful eyes of my young granddaughter, as I’d done many times before. After I applied my lipstick and started to leave, the little one said, “But Grandma, you forgot to kiss the toilet paper good-bye!” I will probably never put lipstick on again without thinking about kissing the toilet paper good-bye . . .

2. My young grandson called the other day to wish me “Happy Birthday.” He asked me how old I was, and I told him, 72. My grandson was quiet for a moment, and then he asked, “Did you start at 1?”

3. After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. As she heard the children getting more and more rambunctious, her patience grew thin. Finally, she threw a towel around her head and stormed into their room, putting them back to bed with stern warnings. As she left the room, she heard the three-year-old say with a trembling voice, “Who was THAT?”

4. A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like. “We used to skate outside on a

8. When my grandson Billy and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside to keep from attracting pesky insects. Still, a few fireflies followed us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, “It’s no use Grandpa. Now the mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights.”

9. When my grandson asked me how old I was, I teasingly replied, “I’m not sure.” “Look in your underwear, Grandpa,” he advised “Mine says I’m 4 to 6.” (Wow! I really like this one — it says I’m only ‘38’!)

pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods.” The little girl was wide-eyed, taking this all in. At last she said, “I sure wish I’d gotten to know you sooner!” 5. My grandson was visiting one day when he asked, “Grandma, do you know how you and God are alike?” I mentally polished my halo and I said, “No, how are we alike?’’ “You’re both old,” he replied.

6. A little girl was diligently pounding away on her grandfather’s word processor. She told him she was writing a story. “What’s it about?” he asked. “I don’t know,” she replied. “I can’t read.”

7. I didn’t know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out something and ask what color it was. She would tell me and was always correct. It was fun for me, so I continued. At last, she headed for the door, saying, “Grandma, I really think you should try to figure out some of these colors yourself!”

10. A second grader came home from school and said to her grandmother, “Grandma, guess what? We learned how to make babies today.” The grandmother, more than a little surprised, tried to keep her cool. “That’s interesting.” she said. “How do you make babies?” “It’s simple,” replied the girl. “You just change ‘y’ to ‘i’ and add ‘es’.”

11. Children’s Logic: “Give me a sentence about a public servant,” said a teacher. The small boy wrote: “The fireman came down the ladder pregnant.” The teacher took the lad aside to correct him. “Don’t you know what pregnant means?” she asked. “Sure,” said the young boy confidently. ‘It means carrying a child.”

12. A grandfather was delivering his grandchildren to their home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children started dis-

13. A six-year-old was asked where his grandma lived. “Oh,” he said, “she lives at the airport, and whenever we want her, we just go get her. Wow! I cannot believe another year is gone. We are looking forward to the exciting things to come in 2018. We kicked off the year with a youth outing to Medieval Times in Dallas. We had 32 youth and many parents attend plus some awesome grandparents. I don’t know who enjoyed it more - the kids or the adults.

Lodge 49, Rowena youth begins basketball practice

Dear SPJST, My school got off for three weeks for Christmas. I started basketball practice last Thursday. I fell when we played the boys. I fell hard! Tracy Schwertner, age 11 —SPJST—

Dear SPJST, One day next year, I am going to do 4-H. I am going to show rabbits and sheep. Today, I went to the stock show. My friend got first with her rabbit. I am going to show Rimmy for my sheep, and my friend is going to get me one. Bella Schwertner, age 8 —SPJST—

Lodge 202, Jourdanton youth plays in Tour of Texas Qualifier

Dear Vestnik, This past weekend was one to remember, and I will never forget. I already play for a club volleyball through my school, but I was asked to play in the Tour of Texas Qualifier, which I was very excited and honored to be a part of. Although we placed fourth in our pool, I had fun just getting to play.

There were 30 courts and 116 teams from all around Texas, but the most exciting part was that it was played at the Alamodome in San Antonio. I made a lot of new friends that I will cherish forever and will never forget. Fraternally, Katlyn Polasek, age 15 —SPJST—

2017 - 2018 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance

Second Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the June 2017 to May 2018 youth year. This is total merit points for the 2017-2018 youth year thusfar. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended from June 2017 to May 2018. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities.

What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards.

Contest Dates June 1, 2017 to May 31, 2018

Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior

Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Youth Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Youth Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Youth Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest. Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Youth Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.

Merit Point Awards First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division. Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through fifth place awards to qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The junior and teen with the most points in each district also receive recognition. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first place will receive the award.* Junior and Teen Point Awards First Place $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place $20 Fourth Place - $15 Fifth Place $10

What is an Active Youth Member? A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school. Dist Ldg Name Pts

Czech Center Museum Houston traces the grand legacy of watercolorist Hunter George in a special exhibition “Reflections of the Past.” The Center is located at 4920 San Jacinto in Houston. The exhibition features imagery of Europe’s romantic landscape and historical architecture produced by the modern-day master of watercolor. The show demonstrates the undeniable strength and versatility of this venerable medium as it has been used to capture the unique beauty of Central European’s countryside. A Virginia transplant to the State of Texas, Hunter studied art, design and photography at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. As a Graphic Artist, he has been honored with numerous Design Awards from Art Directors’ Clubs of New York, Los Angeles, Denver, Tulsa and Houston; Communication

SPJST Foundation gives $1,000 to Czech Center Museum Houston

A $1,000 check was presented to the Czech Center Museum Houston at its October 28, 2017, fundraising gala. The check was the first gift extended by the SPJST Foundation. It was extended through the SPJST Foundation’s Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. District Five Director Bradley Stavinoha, who also serves as a director of the Foundation, made the motion to extend the donation to the Czech Center Museum Houston on the basis of the damages that were incurred as a result of the rain brought on by Hurricane Harvey. Director Stavinoha, pictured above holding the check, requested that SPJST members who were in attendance at the CCMH Gala to join in the presentation in a show of solidarity between SPJST and Czech Center Museum Houston. They presented the check to CCMH Founders Effie and Bill Rosene, seated, far right.
