Snow Much Fun in Corpus Christi
Věstník “serves up” SPJST life to Czech students
H E R A L D
ISSN —07458800
Many youngsters in Corpus Christi, Texas, awoke on Friday, December 8, 2017, to snow covering the city for the first time in their lives. Lodge 79, Corpus Christi Youth Club members Marcus Rebecek, left, and Jacob Rebecek, right, enjoy the day building a Texas snowman with their mother Laura. The previous recorded snowfall in Corpus was in 2004.
“My students enjoy reading the Věstník learning more about the USA and the different activities that the lodges do. This was in The Agrotec Company in Hustopec, South Moravia, Czech Republic. My students are involved in all aspects of the company from accounting to dealing with customers. The company has all farming equipment from the smallest to the giants even the grape pickers as we are in the largest wine producing area of all the Czech Republic. I am happy to receive the Věstník, and it is a great way to keep up with my many friends in Texas . . . and it makes a perfect reading instrument for my students. It is good for pronunciation and knowing typical Texas (USA) English phrases and words. Thank you and keep up the great work that you are doing.” —John A. Kuba, Podivin, Czech Republic

The Embassy of the Czech Republic invites Czech-American individuals, schools, businesses, and organizations from around the United States to submit a photo of what it means to be CzechAmerican to them in order to join in the 2018 celebrations of 100 years of Czech independence. These photos may depict people enjoying Czech food and drink or watching their favorite Czech sports star compete. They may include Czech products, such as technology, cars or bikes, or even toys, being put to the test. They may also incorporate Czech books, films, theatre, and language as well as permanent symbols such as signs, statues, memorials, or murals. The photos should demonstrate CzechAmerican inspiration, heritage, and pride. The Czech Embassy is seeking originality; photos may portray Czech connections as well as abstract ideas. Special note: While the Czech Embassy remains staunchly proud of Czech heritage, it is not seeking to collect photos strictly of people dressed in the national

Insure Your Love
§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§
F
ebruary is “Insure Your Love” Month. It’s a great time to think about life insurance . . . do you have enough? People don’t buy life insurance because they think they are “going to die,” or because it “makes financial sense,” or because “my parents told me it’s the grown up thing to do.” No, they buy it because they love someone and want to make sure they would be OK financially if something happened to them. Dear Věstník Readers, I challenge each of you to seriously think about how much life insurance you have. Is it enough? If something were to happen to you, would your loved one(s) be able to continue with his/her/their current life style - or would be create a hardship? Now is the time to think about it. And, if you need to increase your life insurance coverage, please call your SPJST sales agent or 800727-7578 or send an email to info@spjst.org. Thank you. §

Readers Write
Reader happy about 2019 calendar
Dear Melanie, I was happy to learn that the Supreme Lodge decided to start printing the SPJST calendar again. To me, it has an historic and cultural importance - one Czech people can be proud of. I want the readers to know that about one year ago, I spoke to you on the phone and was really amazed to hear that some 26,000 calendars were mailed to members every year at a cost of some $20,000. However, that works out to only 77 cents per unit. And, if everyone sent only $1 for their calendar, you would receive a surplus of some $6,000. I say all this because you can’t buy a calendar anywhere for only $1. And then there are the pictures, recipes, flag etiquette, etc. I hope all the members who really want their calendar remember to return their request form in the mail. Frank L. Squeezebox Comes to Cyclone By Justin Everett of Lodge 24, Cyclone
A fun time was had by all on Saturday, January 20, 2018, at Lodge 24, Cyclone. Terrific music was provided by Squeezebox featuring Ted Lange and Mollie B. This was by far, one of the best dances that Lodge 24 has hosted. There was not one empty table in the hall. I loved seeing everyone having a great time dancing to the Mollie B and Ted Lange band. It is such a beautiful sight to see so many people in the Central Texas area enjoying polka music. The band played plenty of polkas, waltzes, and country songs for everybody to dance to and have a good time. Mollie Busta Lange had no problem showcasing her talents by playing many, many instruments. Accordion, saxophone, trumpet, and piano to name a few. If ever needed, Mollie could become a one-woman band. Squeezebox has played dances all over the country and has performed many times on the national
television show, Mollie B Polka Party, which sounds fitting since Mollie is the host of the show. Squeezebox had no trouble getting the crowd excited and dancing. On their very first song, the polka dancers rushed to the dance floor as if it was covered in $100 bills! A big thanks is owed to the Lodge 24 youth for selling hamburgers and snacks. I’m sure the youth raised plenty of funds, since the line for the kitchen was out the door. We would also like to thank the bar volunteers and everyone who showed up to see Squeezebox in person. It was such a treat to have Squeezebox perform at Lodge 24, and we hope they are able to play another dance there soon.

RIGHT PHOTO: Lodge 79 Secretary Virginia Rebecek is pictured in front of her home in Corpus Christi. The Rebeceks enjoyed the rare, beautiful site of snow in Corpus Christi - the first since 2004.
Congratulations to tarok tournament winners at Lodge 48, Beyersville. They are, left to right, Keith Knapek - first place, Sonny Klepac - second, Tim Prater - third, and Paul Schlesinger - fourth.
It was a successful tarok tournament at SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville on Saturday, January 27, 2018. Forty players came from as far away as Corpus Christi, Fort Worth, and Schulenburg. It was a good day as for the weather - nothing like the tournament that was held on December 2, 2000. David Kucera brought a copy of the Věstník that pertained to that day. It was very cold and windy, and that was before we had remodeled the hall. The winners of that tournament were David Kucera first; John Vrana - second; Jimmie Coufal - third; and Albert Kubala - fourth. The players enjoyed desserts donated by the Kolache Shop with coffee, orange juice, pigs-in-a-blanket, and grapes while waiting for the tournament to start. A delicious noon meal of pork loin, mashed potatoes and brown gravy, green beans, corn, sliced peaches, and homemade bread was served. The high round winners were David
Knapek - first round, 220; Tim Prater, second round, 151; John Vrana - third round, 185; Jerry Brezina - fourth round, 195; Keith Knapek - fifth round, 201; and Joe Cernoch - sixth round, 201. Tim Prater was carrying the highest total, but went to sleep in the afternoon and had some bad rounds. Keith Knapek won first place with 850; Sonny Klepac - second, 796; Tim Prater - third, 783; and Paul Schlesinger - fourth, 760. We thank all of you for coming. We hope that you enjoyed the day and will come again next year. Thanks also for those who prepared and served the meal - John Wuensche, Juanette Meiske, Alice Bracewell, Alice Wuensche, Margie Faltesek, and Linda Mokrey. Thanks also to Trent Wuensche who tabulated the scores. Fraternally, Bobby Wuensche —SPJST—

Dallas Circle of Czech Women— Kroužek Českých Žen disbands; donates funds, archival documentation to TCHCC The organization decided to disband its organization after 79 years of service to the community of the Dallas area. Throughout those years, they adjusted their programs to meet the current needs of the time. Below is short summary of the organization’s history. In 2014, the group had its last formal meeting. Recently, the remaining members voted to donate the balance of their treasury and supporting documentation of their activities during their years of service to Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, Texas. We thank them for this generous donation and are proud to have the history of this organization in our archives. —Retta Slavik Chandler, TCHCC President and Chairman of the Board History of Kroužek Českých Žen Circle of Czech Women
The Kroužek began when a group of Czech women met at Anna Sill’s home to drhat peri (pluck goose feathers), to
make perinky (pillows), periny (feather comforters), and quilts. Some of the ladies were subscribing to a Czech newspaper called Hlasatcl, published in Chicago. After reading about groups of Czech women who had organized Kroužek in their community, the ladies decided to organize a Kroužek in Dallas. Their purpose was to help the needy families, visit the sick, and support charitable organizations. The Kroužek Českých Žen (Circle of Czech Women) was organized on March 28, 1935, at Sokol Hall, 3700 Carl Street, Dallas, Texas. The 14 charter members were sisters Adolphine Stransky, Bessie Valcik, Marie Rezek, Marie Kraft, Mary Vancura, Mary Toberny, Agnes Hemzel, Albi Koze, Marie Filipec, Frances Rotrekl, Marie Stransky, Rose Bouska, Helen Harris, and Rosie Spanel. According to the first minutes, no officers were elected that day. At the second meeting in April 1935, officers elected were: Adolphine Stransky, president; Marie Rezek, vice presi-

dent; Bessie Valcik, secretary/reporter; and Frances Rotrekl, treasurer. Meetings were held once a month on Thursday from one until four in the afternoon. Dues were 10 cents a month. After the meeting, kolaches and coffee were served and members played bingo for a penny a game. Sister Stransky always closed her meetings with: Mejte se vzdycky radi (Always love one another). The Kroužek often held bazaars which were well attended social events. With each member donating baked goods and handmade crafts, money was raised to operate the Kroužek and fund their charitable projects. During World

War II, many of the sisters did volunteer work. The Red Cross brought sewing machines to Sokol, and the sisters sewed bandages for the Armed Sendees. In 1983, Sister Toberny and Sister Rose Kopecek were recognized by the Red Cross for their 28 years of volunteer service. Volunteer work was also performed at the veterans hospital by various sisters. Sister Mary Toberny donated much of her time at the veterans hospital and was recognized for her efforts. Every year, the Kroužek donated a $25 memorial to the veterans hospital gift shop in Sister Toberny’s memory. Meetings were held at the Sokol on

Carl Street until the building was sold. On October 1, 1959, the Kroužek began meeting at Sokol Hall, 7448 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, Texas. All meetings were in Czech until 1981. Except for January and July, the meetings were held the first Thursday of each month, beginning promptly at 10:30 a.m. Business was conducted, members sang “Happy Birthday’’ to the sisters having a birthday that month, and a drawing was held for small gifts (do vhyry) that each sister donated. Twenty-cent tickets were purchased for the drawing by the sisters as a fundraiser then a covered dish luncheon was shared with husbands and guests. Several times a year, guest speakers were invited to the meetings. In December at the Christmas party, instead of exchanging gifts, the sisters donated money in an envelope and indicated the charity it was to be given to. At one time, Kroužek Českých Žen had around 100 members. Several of the sisters had been members for more than 40 years. The Kroužek continued to be an active organization made up of long-time friends and newcomers, all of whom enjoyed the common bond of their Czech heritage until 2014. Best Friend Forget the poems I wrote and sent comedic lines of little sense, in troubled times I will concede you were always there a friend indeed So many friends in time were spent like summer winds they came and went, so few were true amid life’s furor you alone remained for richer or poorer My faithful friend ever by my side you never wavered in your stride, deflected danger arrows and slings protected me under angel wings
Close as we are no truer friend no dearer love could I pretend, when said and done we made our mark my best friend 'til death do us part. —SPJST—

Valentine’s Day Open House celebrates new glass exhibit
Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, located at 119 West French Avenue in Temple, Texas, will host an open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, February 14, 2018. The event celebrates a new exhibit sponsored by the Antique Glass Club of Temple, featuring early 20th century C z e c h boudoir glass from the collection of Rosie and Danforthe Bodien. Admission will be free of charge during the event. The new exhibit will be displayed in two new cases donated to the museum by the Antique Glass Club and Carolyn Coufal. Boudoir glass refers generally to items found on a woman’s dressing table. This collection includes perfume bottles, cologne atomizers, dresser boxes, ring trays, hat pins and figurines, all made in Czechoslovakia. Several of the new exhibit pieces were made at the Curt Schlevogt glassworks owned by Curt Schlevogt and his son Henry. Henry innovated a new glass technique with the appearance of marble, malachite, and lapiz lazuli. Then he hired leading artists and sculptors to design his new pieces. At the 1937 Paris World’s Fair, Schlevogt’s marble-like glass was featured in ornamental sculptures by Ena Rottenberg and Josef Bernhard, winning, in part, the Grand Prize for the Czechoslovaks. Both art nouveau and art deco styles are represented in this collection, includ-

ing the popular, “Ingrid” art deco line. Henry Schlevogt married Charlotte Hoffman, the daughter of another glass producer, Henry Hoffman. Charlotte died while giving birth to their child Ingrid for whom the line is named. At the end of World War II, the Schlevogt glassworks were nationalized, and Henry was sentenced to prison in Siberia for four years. After release, he was exiled, but began again, directing a glass factory in France until his death in 1984. The Antique Glass Club sponsorship includes not only the two new display cases, but also expert advice and research help with the artifacts. The Antique Glass Club was organized in 1963 by Mrs. Harvey Watkins, and its first president was Mrs. J.E. Johnson. The club, which currently has 24 members, aims to preserve an interest in antique glass and the history and stories it reflects. The club’s officers are Carolyn Coufal, president; Gail Wical, first vice president; Beverly Kermode, second vice president; Angela Peik, secretary; and Nancy Smith, treasurer. Background Information 100 Years of Czech Independence The year 2018 marks 100 years since the founding of an independent and sovereign democratic nationstate for the
Czech people. To learn more, please visit www.czechindependence.org.
Czech-US Inspiration and Friendship The Czech Republic’s anniversary underscores a centennial milestone in the independence of a democracy as well as its founding inspiration in American values and ideals, such as a representative government and the separation of church and state. In recent history, the inspiration has continued when America opened its arms to former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Oscar-winning director Miloš Forman, tennis legend Martina Navrátilová, and Ivana Trump, just to name a few. Czech-Americans celebrate their heritage locally through their love for delicious kolache, savory Czech beer, the sounds of Antonín Dvořák or polka, and gymnastics in Sokol. Meanwhile, in the United States Capitol, a bust of Václav Havel, only the fourth foreign leader represented, sits, a powerful message of mutual respect and belief in human rights, justice, and freedom.
