Lodge 180, Burleson says, “Happy Birthday, Carmon!”

After the February meeting, Lodge 180, Burleson members enjoyed dinner at Sammy’s Bistro in Burleson. Members also celebrated Carmon Babina’s birthday with red velvet cake. —Submitted by Nancy Kelly, President

Supreme President Brian Vanicek threw out a challenge to come up with a mission statement for the lodge in his “President’s Notebook” in November. We took this challenge and developed one for Lodge 180. Several statements were written and presented to the members for their input. The statements were voted upon, and the Lodge 180 mission statement is: Provide financial protection for our friends and neighbors while supporting the community with friendship, love, and dedication to their needs as well as our own.

A discussion followed regarding activities for us for the coming year with the present activity on the agenda to be a bowling game followed by a meal sometime later this year—perhaps either April or May. All members were excited to the prospects of having fun throwing a ball at wooden sticks! Further discussion at the March meeting will take place so that we can finalize our outing. Our monthly donation will be to Harvest House, Burleson, from Lianna Scott and Lodge 180. Door prizes were won by Dena Bowden and Leon Flusche. My apologies to all the January birthday celebrants from Lodge 180. So sorry that I was unable to extend birthday greetings to you, but here’s a birthday greeting: “Happy Belated Birthday Greetings to all Lodge 180 Members!”

Lodge 191, Lufkin invites all to dance this Friday

Do you think spring is ever going to get here? I think everyone is about tired of this cold weather, and maybe we have had enough cold weather to kill all of the bugs. Here is a list of the officers of the SPJST lodge for 2018. It has been the same people since 2013. I hope everyone realizes that this is a non-paying job, and we are just volunteers: President George Scogin Vice President Doyle Oliver Treasurer Sarah Oliver Secretary Pat Scogin

Dance This Friday The Friday, February 16 dance will be Glenn Lenderman and Friends. Glenn is a very talented musician and songwriter. He has to love what he does because he has been playing music for a long time, and he is very good at it.

The address for the lodge is 197 Hughes Road in Lufkin. The dance is from 7 to 9 pm. The cost is $6 for members and $8 for guests. Please come out and support your lodge. Please bring a covered dish or snack food for the food table. Thanks to all of the cooks who bring food each month. It probably gets tiring bringing food each month, but everyone seems to like the food. The bands have still not been booked for the year, but when they are booked, the schedule will be posted in the Vestnik. Martha White and her band did an excellent job of playing for the January dance. Everyone seemed to enjoy her music. Dues must be paid by March 1 to remain on the active member list for this year. Dues can be mailed to: SPJST Lodge 191, PO Box 3113, Lufkin, Texas 75903, or bring them to the February dance. We lost one of our members last week - Jim Netherland. He and JoAnn loved to dance and had been coming to the lodge for many years. Jim was born November 3, 1927, and passed away January 30, 2018. He was in the United States Army and worked as a journeyman with the Merchant Marines for more than 40 years. He traveled all over the world, and he loved talking about all of his travels. He will be greatly missed. Please keep JoAnn and their family in your prayers. If anyone has anything they want added to the newsletter, call me at 936875-02867 or email GeorgePat@consolidated.net. In Memory of Rudolph Kovar

Rudolph Kovar and his twin brother, Adolph, were born on November 29, 1920, in Kovar, Texas, a small community south of Smithville that was established by his grandfather, Martin Kovar. They were the youngest of five children of Joe Kovar and Mary Matysek Kovar. Rudolph passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2018, at the age of 97. Rudolph Kovar At the age of six or seven, the Kovar family moved to the community of Circleville, Texas. They were a farming family, and all the children had to work in the fields to support the family. It was growing up farming that Rudolph developed his excellent knowledge and skills of producing prosperous crops. As he became of age, he became the ram rod of the family farming operation, and his parents and siblings looked up to him to make the important decisions. Rudolph farmed successfully until his retirement when he purchased a home in Granger where he began a very successful gardening venture. He would supply all his neighbors with the fruits of his garden. He was so serious about gardening, that his entire back yard and most of his front yard were vegetable beds. While living here, he would also go out and help some of his neighbors, who farmed nearby, in any function he was physically capable of. He also went out every year and picked pecans and spent many hours shelling them to give to friends or relatives. Rudolph attended Circleville School, but never went to high school. While in school, he was recognized for his artistic talent. Many of his artistic works were entered by his teachers in the University Interscholastic League art competition for children his age. Rudolph was a very devout member of SS Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church. In fact, after he was declared legally blind and couldn’t operate a vehicle anymore, he would walk over a mile, one way, to attend Sunday services, regardless of the weather. This was at the age of over 90 years. He was also very proud to be a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a long-

time member of SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor.

Rudy, as he was known to many of his friends, was soft spoken and a very simple man. All who knew him, will remember him for his big heart and his nature of giving. Rudolph was preceded in death by parents Joe and Mary Kovar; and siblings Louis, Raymond, Bertha, and Adolph. He is survived by nieces MaryAnn

Lodge 160, San Angelo Youth Club reorganizes, makes valentines

We met for the first time in many years on Sunday, January 28, 2018, at Wall Brethren Hall. We made valentine cards for Meals for the Elderly. They plan to put the cards in with the meal so when the people open their meal, they can see the card. We also filled jars with candy and decorated them. It was really fun because we got to make cool designs on our jars. Fraternally, Parker Schwartz, age 12 Reporter —SPJST—

Czech Heritage Museum Valentine’s Day Open House celebrates new glass exhibit

Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, located at 119 West French Avenue in Temple, Texas, will host an open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, February 14, 2018. The event celebrates a new exhibit sponsored by the Antique Glass Club of Temple, featuring early 20th century Czech boudoir glass from the collection of Rosie and Danforthe Bodien. Admission will be free of charge during the event. The new exhibit will be displayed in two new cases donated to the museum by the Antique Glass Club and Carolyn Coufal. Boudoir glass refers generally to items found on a woman’s dressing table. This collection includes perfume bottles, cologne atomizers, dresser boxes, ring trays, hat pins and figurines, all made in Czechoslovakia. Several of the new exhibit pieces were made at the Curt Schlevogt glassworks owned by Curt Schlevogt and his son Henry. Henry innovated a new glass technique with the appearance of marble, malachite, and lapiz lazuli. Then he hired leading artists and sculptors to design his new pieces. At the 1937 Paris World’s Fair, Schlevogt’s marble-like glass was featured in ornamental sculptures by Ena Rottenberg and Josef Bernhard, winning, in part, the Grand Prize for the Czechoslovaks. Both art nouveau and art deco styles

are represented in this collection, including the popular, “Ingrid” art deco line. Henry Schlevogt married Charlotte Hoffman, the daughter of another glass producer, Henry Hoffman. Charlotte died while giving birth to their child Ingrid for whom the line is named. At the end of World War II, the Schlevogt glassworks were nationalized, and Henry was sentenced to prison in Siberia for four years. After release, he was exiled, but began again, directing a glass factory in France until his death in 1984. The Antique Glass Club sponsorship includes not only the two new display cases, but also expert advice and research help with the artifacts. The Antique Glass Club was organized in 1963 by Mrs. Harvey Watkins, and its first president was Mrs. J.E. Johnson. The club, which currently has 24 members, aims to preserve an interest in antique glass and the history and stories it reflects. The club’s officers are Carolyn Coufal, president; Gail Wical, first vice president; Beverly Kermode, second vice president; Angela Peik, secretary; and Nancy Smith, treasurer. Lodge 133 San Antonio member shares Czech life

Dear Věstník Readers, I thought I would tell you about what is happening here in Moravia, Czech Republic, at this time of the year. After Christmas and New Year’s, it is a drab time. Oh yes, many people are enjoying all the different winter sport activities like skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, sledding, and ice skating. But, the big push now is all the pre-lenten traditional balls. You may find them in every village, town, and city. They are sponsored by different groups such as the Sokols, the hunters, the fishermen, the school, the firemen, they can be a costume, they can be colored hair, and even beach or volleyball. It is a good way to usher in Lent and spring. Usually, they all end before Ash Wednesday. Once in a while, one might be held the weekend after Ash Wednesday when necessary. Not every village has all of these, but here, villages are about six to 10 miles apart so people can choose to visit other balls. There is always live music, decorations, and a raffle with many interesting items. They have an open bar and a variety of open-faced sandwiches, cakes, kolacky, and cookies. No one will leave hungry or thirsty, hahaha! I always enjoy going to one or two visiting with friends, dancing, and the refreshments as well as supporting the sponsoring organization. Lent is a good time to lose those extra pounds from the Christmas season. Yours John A. Kuba Podivin, Czech Republic SPJST Lodge 133 San Antonio member —SPJST—

That’s why getting life insurance just makes sense. It helps protect our loved ones, in case something happened to us. That is love, too.
