Dear Melanie, On behalf of my parents, Doug and Virginia Williams of Lodge 15, Buckholts, and the other residents at William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home in Temple, I would like to thank the youth of Lodge 47, Seaton for their recent visit. It was thoughtful of them, and their visit was so welcomed! The beautiful valentines and fruit they distributed to each resident was greatly appreciated. Most importantly, just seeing the young faces and getting to chat with each youth was a pleasure the residents will treasure. Thank you for taking the time to think of our veterans and to recognize and honor them for their service to our country. What a great group of kids! Gratefully, Sherry Dusek —SPJST—

“Age of Storms” Czech history book available

Dear Sirs, A recently published book “Age of Storms,” dealing with the recent Czech history, has been described by its English readers as “a fascinating read.” The book covers, through authentic experiences of two generations of a single Czech family, the four most significant forthcoming anniversaries in the country’s history. These anniversaries include, this year, 100 years since the country’s independence, 80 years since its Munich betrayal, 70 years since the communist coup d’etat, and 50 years since the Prague Spring and the Soviet occupation. “Age of Storms” written in English, is expected to be of interest to the Czech Diaspora, including your members. It is available on Amazon Books and Kindle, and you can find more information about it on the website: www.peterkysel.com As an author, I shall be available for active promotion of the book during 2018. I wish also to bring to your attention work of a British charity “The Friends of Czech Heritage,” which has been, for a decade, devoted to active restoration and promotion of the Czech heritage, through financial sponsorship of individual projects in the Czech Republic, by organizing the exchange of technical expertise in restoration between the UK and the Czech Republic, through direct participation of its members and associates in voluntary work on heritage projects in the Czech Republic and in organizing lectures and seminars on the Czech physical and cultural heritage abroad. You will find details of Friends’ projects on the website: www.czechfriends.net. The Friends are aware of many potential projects which deserve urgent help. We look for cooperation with similar organizations and hope to form a group of like minded people to enhance the heritage restoration process in the Czech Republic. I hope that you may find these initiatives of interest to you and to your members, and I look forward to your response. With my best regards, Peter Kysel —SPJST—

From The SPJST Foundation Skilled antique furniture refinisher sought to assist on historic Velehrad lodge project

If you have experience in furniture repair and refinishing antique furniture and would like to give back to the historic Lodge 19, Velehrad restoration project with your skills, this is a great volunteer opportunity for you! The project involves the restoration of 13 circa 1900, wooden, pressed back wooden chairs. We are seeking the expert assistance of a skilled antique refinisher in stripping the remnants of the old finish, staining, and refinishing the chairs. Each chair has four legs with two rungs between each side’s set of legs and spindle backs with four spindles and seat bracing. The seat backs pressed back design features scrollwork. Wood: Indeterminate. Generally good condition; however, three of the seats have splits which appear to be repairable. Chair dimensions are: 15.0”W

x 38” H x 15.0” D. For more information, please contact SPJST Foundation President Brian Vanicek at 254-534-2902.

Save the Date! The historic Lodge 19, Velehrad lodge hall is slated to be rededicated on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at its new location at Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange. The grand rededication, which begins at 4 p.m., will take place in conjunction with the SPJST Founder’s Day celebration that is being co-hosted from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville by SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville and the SPJST Foundation. Lodge 15, Buckholts receives funds from historical society

I apologize for the tardiness of the report, but the flu bug got me and put all of my duties on hold. The last meeting of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts was held Monday, January 8, 2018, at 5:30 p.m. All officers were present. President Mary Helen Rodriguez called the meeting to order. Vice President Scott Brandon led the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a moment of silence for our departed members and service men and women. Sandi Fischer gave the treasurer’s report. It was approved as read. We immediately jumped into the problems of the day which included another broken pipe in the restroom after the recent freeze. Once again, Pete Rodriguez and Lupe Balderos came to our rescue and repaired the broken pipes. These men are another example of how I am sure God watches over our little lodge.

Wednesday, February 21, 2018

On the upside, we finally received our check from the historical society. There are so many things we need done, and we are going to be very frugal about where the funds go. President Rodriguez expressed having a lot of inquiries for rentals in the spring, and as Doug Williams says, “So far, so good.” The next meeting will be February 12. VĚSTNÍK

Naše CEFT výroční schůze v roce 2018 se vydařila Jan Vaculík, česky píšící dopisovatel.

Pravidelná čtvrtletní a výroční schůze naší České vzdělávací nadace státu Texasu se konala dne 20. ledna 2018 v nově upravené budově naší Slovanské podporující jednoty státu Texasu za poměrně dobré účasti členstva. President naší nadace Woody Smith zahájil schůzi, pozdravil ředitele a hosty a poděkoval jednotě za příjmné pohostinství a přívětivost k naší nadaci. Připravila nový oběžník pro zimu a jaro roku 2018 a mnozí členové a členové naší nadace si mohou přečíst pěkné články a informace v tomto oběžníku.

Čtyřikrát do roka poskládá nové číslo oběžníku, aby chom si mohli přehledně přečíst o všech akcích a událostech za proběhnuté čtvrtletí.

přispěla hodnotnou částkou osobně a prostřednictvím Brazoské odbočky České společnosti našeho dědictví. Její finanční podpora byla s vděčností přijata. Ráda naši nadaci podporuje svou činností a finančně.

. . Určitě uvítáme i starší historické materiály.

Bližší informace o přesném termínu konání výstavy i festivalu a další podmínky Vám budeme moci sdělit v první polovině února 2018. Do té doby Vás prosíme alespoň o krátkou reakci, zdali tento e-mail dorazil na správnou adresu a zdali by Vaše organizace měla případně zájem se na akci podílet či zdali máte možnost a byli byste ochotni nabídnout nějaké materiály, které by pomohly prozkoumat české amatérské divadlo v USA. Letošní rok je jedinečnou příležitostí, kdy můžeme zmapovat a zviditelnit tuto kapitolu našeho společného kulturního dědictví, a Vaše pomoc je pro nás zásadní. Velice Vám děkujeme za ochotu a spolupráci,

anniversary of the independent Czechoslovakia, we would like to fill a huge gap in our research which is the history and the present of the Czech amateur theatre in the USA. We would be grateful for establishing new contacts with our compatriots abroad and start any kind of cooperation, which would lead to the preservation of our common cultural heritage. Now we are searching for materials which document the past as well as the current activities of the Czech amateur theatre movement in the USA. We would like to ask you whether you/your organization have access to such materials or whether you come into contact with any amateur theatre groups which are/were active and there’s a chance to gather such information. It doesn’t matter whether it is a group of adults, puppet theatre, children’s theatre, or any kind of theatre activities realized in schools and/or clubs: we’re searching for posters, photos/videos of performances, theatre programmes, articles, links, information published in the media, etc. We’re looking for old painted theatre curtains as well, which is a phenomenon

in the Czech Republic. All these materials have their place in our database. When agreed by the owners, we would like to digitalize these materials and display them to public as a temporary exhibition of Czech Amateur Theatre in the USA, which will take place in Summer 2018 in the Bohemian National Hall in New York. If the materials would be enough, a publication “Czech Amateur Theatre in the USA 19182018” could arise, too. In the same time, we’ll have the opportunity to organize a small Festival of Czech Amateur Theatre in the BNH and thus introduce the living Czech amateur theatre tradition in the heart of New York City. Among our compatriots, we are looking for active amateur theatre groups which are providing Czech-speaking theatre (or at least adapting Czech plays, texts, etc.). Please, if you know about any of these theatre groups, or have any contacts, be so kind and share them with us. We’ll appreciate any answer from your part. If your organization finds this initiative interesting, we’ll be very

happy to encourage further and more intensive cooperation. An agreement on partnership at these events could be made, just depending on your interest and possibilities. Further information on exact terms and conditions of the Exhibition and the Festival would be available by mid-February at the latest. Until that time, please, be so kind and share with us your reflection, whether you find it interesting, if you would like to cooperate more intensively and (possibly) whether you have any information or contacts with any of the theatre groups. This is an informal letter, but as soon as we will finalize the dates and conditions with the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the management of the Bohemian National Hall, we’ll be happy to provide any official paper with further details.
