exas Independence Day is the celebration of the adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836 - or 182 years ago. With this document signed by 59 delegates, settlers in Mexican Texas officially declared independence from Mexico and created the Republic of Texas.

5 Stages of Czechs Saying Goodbye Thanks to Bernadette Bellenger of Lodge 97, Placedo for sharing this fact of Czech life! I can very much relate because I’m guilty of doing this!

1. The initial goodbye. 2. The goodbye in the kitchen. 3. The goodbye in the living room. 4. The goodbye in the doorway. 5. The goodbye when you’re in your car with the engine running and they’re still talking!

Rise Above One day a school teacher wrote on the board the following: 9×1 =7 9 × 2 = 18 9 × 3 = 27 9 × 4 = 36 9 × 5 = 45 9 × 6 = 54 9 × 7 = 63 9 × 8 = 72 9 × 9 = 81 9 × 10 = 90

When she was done, she looked to the students, and they were all laughing at her because of the first equation which was wrong, and then the teacher said the following, “I wrote that first one wrong on purpose because I wanted you to learn something important. This was for you to know how the world out there will treat you. You can see that I wrote the equation correct nine times, but none of you congratulated me for it. But you all laughed and criticized me because of the one wrong thing I did. So this is the lesson . . . The world will never appreciate the good you do a million times, but will criticize the one wrong thing you do. Don’t get discouraged. Always rise above all the laughter and criticism. Stay strong.

Lodge 25, Ennis hosts Successful Fundraiser

Saturday, February 17, 2018 • SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis Hall • Submitted by Margaret Krajca, Reporter

No one, alone, can make an event successful. It takes a team. A great team! Together, a crew of more than 40 volunteers worked together hosting more than 450 people at SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis’ annual fundraiser which was held Saturday, February 17, 2018. The final dollar figures are not yet available; however,

our preliminary numbers tell us that it was a huge success. Thanks to the many people who donated their time in so many different ways by selling tickets, cleaning, setting up, decorating, making desserts, preparing foods, helping advertise by spreading the word, and extending invitations. We

received several monetary donations as well as more than 50 wonderful raffle prizes and auction items. Thank you! And, a special thank you to everyone who attended this annual event and really brought the party to life! We thoroughly enjoyed having each of you there. We hope you had a great time. We are hon-

ored that you chose to spend your evening with us, and we certainly appreciate your support. Fraternally, Officers of Lodge 25, Ennis Submitted by, Margaret Krajca, Reporter —SPJST—

have to leave for a bite to eat. I’m looking forward to the show. It will be special as it is the 60th anniversary of Ennis Sewing Circle - Kroužek Českých Žen. It is free, and we will serve refreshments. The show is from 2 to 4 p.m. The show includes quilts - both new and historic; most are handmade. Many of the historic quilts were handsewn by the mothers and grandmothers of our current Circle members and reflect the style of quilting practiced by the women of the Czech community in Ennis. I almost forgot . . . the 50-50 dollar winner was Dorothy Prachyl. We’re happy for you. If you remember, I have written several times about Dorothy Prachyl’s grandson Andrew Cole, who is on a swim team at his school. Dorothy is happy to report that Andrew is a member of the team winning a national competition sponsored by Deloitte. More than 60 teams from universities across the United States participated. The top nine regional winning teams met at the Deloitte campus in Westlake, Texas, in January for the final round. Andrew is a second-year student majoring in business and finance at the University of San Diego. Each member of the winning team won $2,000, and their university received $10,000. How wonderful that is! We are so proud for Dorothy. I have just heard some very sad news. One of our special members Ann Clagett lost her daughter - Cathy Woods. Cathy has worked for Ennis School District Tennis Center for the past 15 years and was loved by all the kids at the school. Let’s all keep Ann and her family in our prayers. This is a very hard time for the family. I want to thank everyone for coming, for quilting, and the wonderful food. Don’t forget to pass the word around about our quilt show on Saturday, March 11. If you have any questions, you can call President Irene or myself. Take care, stay well, and see you at the next meeting on Thursday, March 8. Georgia Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

Fort Worth Friendship Club

Fort Worth Friendship Club met Wednesday, February 7, 2018, at St. Thomas Parish Hall for the meeting. The meeting was called to order by President Barbara Becknell, and all were welcomed. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by everyone. Secretary Laurie Dawson read the minutes from the last meeting, and Treasurer Margaret Sears presented the financial report. Both reports were approved as presented. Mardi Gras was certainly in the air. Everyone wore purple, green, or gold, and all were wearing beads. We had lots of table decorations. We even had two King Cakes, but I don’t recall who found the baby in their slice of cake. The baby symbolizes luck and prosperity to the person that finds the baby. Barbara told the story of the King Cakes, and the finder of the baby was “queen for the day.” Both cakes were good, and it was a lot of fun. President Barbara reminded everyone that in April, we will have a white elephant sale. Eddie was a great gymnast and our instructor many years ago. We made lots of trips together to attend Slets in Texas and in Chicago. He also played the piano with the Eric Honza Orchestra for many years and later accompanied the Mikula Orchestra. Some of my older Vestnik readers will remember dancing to their music. In recent years, Eddie played the piano with a few retired musicians at various nursing homes in Ennis. My sympathies go out to his wife Adail and family. Helen Skrasek recently enjoyed a trip to Oklahoma City with her son who came to town on business, and came back by train. While there, they went to the movie to see “The Darkest Hour” and said how enjoyable it was. Helen said it has been years since she went to a movie. Anyway, she certainly had a good visit and an enjoyable time. So Until, Keep Smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

In Memory of Evelyn Matula

Evelyn (Pinter) Matula, age 88, of West, Texas, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 9, 2018, at St. Catherine’s Center in Waco, surrounded by her loving family. A rosary was recited at 6 p.m. Thursday, February 15 at Aderhold Funeral Home, with visitation following until 8 p.m. Mass of Evelyn Matula Christian burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 16 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption with Reverend Darrell Kostiha as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery near West. Evelyn was born July 1, 1929, on her family farm near Abbott, the daughter of Albert and Stella (Hubik) Pinter. She began her education in the country at Brooken School near Abbott and in the second grade transferred to Abbott schools where she remained until graduation. Evelyn learned to play the piano and organ from Willie Nelson’s grandmother and served as organist at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott during her high school years. Graduating from Abbott High with honors in May 1947, Evelyn contemplated entering nursing school. But she followed her heart instead and married the love of her life Fred Matula on August 26, 1947. After almost 63 years of sharing their lives together, Fred preceded her in death on March 16, 2010. Evelyn and Fred built their first home together in West, but their love of the country lured them to buy their first farm in the Cottonwood community in 1952. They worked side by side, farming and ranching for the next 58 years. Evelyn was an avid gardener and expert seamstress, and she loved to crochet. She also enjoyed cooking, and no one ever left her house hungry. In fact, they usually had “goodies” to go. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother to her four children, nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She had a special connection with each of them and there was an extra sparkle in her eyes when they would come to visit. She always

17

loved spoiling the grandchildren and great-grandchildren with special treats, soda, and extra hugs and kisses. She was a true example of deep and loyal devotion to family, and her spirit will live on in all the lives she has touched. Evelyn was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in West and a member of St. Ann’s Altar Society, Catholic Daughters of America Court 829 of West, and SPJST Lodge 66, Waco. She enjoyed praying the rosary daily and delighted in collecting rosaries from around the world. Evelyn was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers Alphonse Pinter, Bill Pinter, and Pat Pinter; nephews Paul Pinter, Neal Pinter, and Jimmy Pinter; and niece Jeannie Pinter Pope. Survivors include son Larry Matula and wife Mitzi of Elm Mott; daughters Nancy Polasek and husband Gary, Linda Beseda and husband John, and Mary Ann Johnson, all of West; grandchildren Christopher Matula and wife Katie, Dustin Matula, Laura Polasek Barretto and husband Alex, Sarah Polasek Boyea and husband Luke, John Beseda, II, Becky Beseda Lane and husband Chris, Katie Johnson, Leah Johnson, and David Johnson; great-grandchildren Jacob, Lucas, and Ella Barretto and Chloe and Caleb Boyea; and several nieces, nephews, and many friends at St. Elizabeth’s Assisted Living Center where she resided her last four years. Active pallbearers were grandsons Christopher Matula, Dustin Matula, John Beseda, II, David Johnson, Alex Barretto, Luke Boyea, and Chris Lane. Honorary pallbearers were granddaughters and great-grandchildren Laura, Jacob, Lucas, and Ella Barretto, Sarah, Chloe, and Caleb Boyea, Becky Lane, Katie and Leah Johnson, and Katie Matula. Memorials may be made to Providence Foundation for Sister Sini Paul to continue her loving ministry to the residents at Providence Park; to Junior Catholic Daughters Court 829 of West for their Adopted Grandparent Program; or to the charity of your choice. You are invited to share your thoughts and memories of Evelyn in our guest book found at www.aderholdfuneralhome.com. Aderhold Funeral Home in West was in charge of arrangements. —SPJST—

Czech town requests financial contributions for publication

Dear Friends: At first, let us introduce the author of the prepared publication. Radomír Golas has been working as the Vice President of the Museum Society of Local History and Science at the Museum in Frenštát pod Radhoštěm. Because of that position, and also because many members of his wife’s family emigrated from our town to Texas, Radomír was years ago entrusted by the then Museum Director, Jiří Klučka with the collection of exhibits for the exposition about emigration to Texas in our Museum. You know, we are sure, that the collection – thanks to the enthusiastic endeavor of Darwin and Nancy Machu, John and Bennie Stasny, Edwin Hlavaty, and a number of other Czech Texans and their societies in Texas – eventually was successfully realized. During the 2005 visit of the folklore ensemble Radhošť to Texas, Radomír personally took part in the selection of collected memorabilia and artifacts and oversaw their loading into the container. Radomír Golas belongs among prominent Wallachian folklore musicians, cultural activity organizers, and musicologists. He is a violinist, a singer, and the leader of a folklore band in Frenštát and for more than 15 years has been working as the director of a music festival, meeting of the Wallachian Kingdom Dulcimer Bands. And for all his life, he has been collecting and recording folk songs, Christmas carols, and folk dances from the Frenštát area. As early as 1960, he managed to write down a Wallachian Christmas Pastoral Play, absolutely unique in our country about shepherds’ pilgrimage to Bethlehem upon the annunciation of Jesus’ birth by the angel. That was the beginning of his activities to collect and record folk songs (see the Collection Of Folk Songs From The Repertoire By Singer Anna Šablaturová), Christmas carols (see the collection Wallachian Christmas Carols In The Frenštát Area), and folk dances. He recorded 180 folk dances with very detailed descriptions and staffs which is a valuable historical document for future generations. The descriptions of the Wallachian Christmas Pastoral Play and the dances are accompanied by dialect dictionaries so that future generations understand the

meanings of particular words and expressions used in the past. The publication will have the title “Frenštátsko v lidových písních a tancích, v činnosti lidových umělců a projevech lidové kultury v tvorbě profesionálních umělců” (The Frenštát Area in Folk Songs and Dances, in the Activities of Folk Artists and the Components of Folk Culture in the Works of Professional Artists). It will contain: I. Frenštát Area in Folk Songs and Christmas Carols – Contents: 1. Folk songs, Christmas carols, and the Wallachian Christmas Pastoral Play; 2. Two CD’s, “Frenštát Area in Folk Songs”; 3. Description of the Wallachian Christmas Pastoral Play; 4. Dialect dictionary; 5. DVD, “Wallachian Christmas Pastoral Play”;

This section presents a brief article on the Frenštát area folk songs and carols and introduces their individual collectors. A detailed description of the Wallachian Christmas Pastoral Play along with the staff and the dialect dictionary are here. The play was realized and its DVD is attached. Another attachment is made by two CDs, “Frenštát Area in Folk Songs” and “Frenštát Area in Folk Songs and Carols” presenting the songs and carols from the collections of individual collectors.

II. Frenštát Area in Folk Dances – Contents: 1. Introduction; 2. Description of folk dances; 3. Explanatory notes to the descriptions of folk dances; 4. Dialect dictionary to the folk dances; 5. Author’s comments to the descriptions of folk dances;

In the Introduction to this section, the author presents the motives encouraging him to record local folk songs and dances and some remarkable experience in meetings informants in particular villages and towns. The descriptions of 180 folk dances follow. They were obtained in cooperation with 28 informants, today already deceased, in eight places of the area, namely Bordovice, Lichnov, Vlčovice, Mniší, Tichá, Kunčice pod Ondřejníkem, Čeladná, Trojanovice, and Frenštát pod Radhoštěm. Explanatory notes, as well as di-

19

alect dictionary, should help readers understand the descriptions of dances. The author’s comments introduce the informants in individual villages and towns; the number of dances recorded in them; and present maps of the Frenštát area and the former Hukvaldy Dominion.

III. Frenštát Area in the Activities of Folk Artists and Collectors and the Components of Folk Culture in the Works of Professional Artists – Contents: This section of the publication will show 35 pictures documenting the way the specific folklore history of the Frenštát area reflects in the works of distinguished artists, writers, woodcarvers, painters, and musicians. Among others, a Frenštát native, a carver and sculptor, Albín Polášek who lived in the United States and died in Florida. The goal of this publication is to contribute to the preservation of the cultural heritage of the Frenštát area and the Czech Republic. Its publisher will be a Frenštát printing company, Arundo Trading Ltd. The author has surrendered his royalties. The publication is not intended for sale; it will serve the publicity of the town of Frenštát pod Radhoštěm. The project will be co-financed by the Moravian-Silesian Region, the City of Frenštát pod Radhoštěm and the Museum Society of Local History and Science. To reach the necessary sum, we are still in need of 80,000 CZK which is equivalent to $4,000 USD. That is why we are turning to you with a request for financial contribution to this rare publication so important for our town and the whole region. The support of your institution would certainly be mentioned in the publication, and you would be donated an arranged number of copies. American inspiration, heritage, and pride. The Czech Embassy is seeking originality; photos may portray Czech connections as well as abstract ideas. Special note: While the Czech Embassy remains staunchly proud of Czech heritage, it is not seeking to collect photos strictly of people dressed in the national costume (kroj). Hence, such photos will, of course, be accepted, but the Embassy is looking for photos representative of Czech culture and life past and present.

The Best Photos The Embassy of the Czech Republic reserves the right to judge, select, and print the submitted photos, which it deems best within its discretion. The Embassy will display and/or project said best photos via an exhibition within its premises during the month of May 2018. The opening of the exhibition will be during the Embassy’s annual open house on Saturday, May 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Each year, nearly 4,000 people visit the Embassy’s open house. The Embassy will notify the authors of the photos in the exhibition of their selection. The Embassy of the Czech Republic further reserves the right to publish and post any of the submitted photos on its website at www.mzv.cz/washington and www.czechindependence.org as well as the Embassy’s social media. Said photos may not be published elsewhere without written permission from the Czech Embassy. Photo credit will be duly accredited to each and every photo whenever it is published or displayed.
