Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome aboard! Boy, did I ever think life could be so busy, yet at the same time, loving! As I left my job in the Vestnik/Communication Department at SPJST Home Office in mid-December, I accepted another job with an airline, Endeavor Air. It is a regional carrier wholly owned by Delta. I was in the first new hire flight attendant training class for 2018. As of a few weeks ago, I completed training and received my wings. I am now on my own as a crew member. Many may say it’s just pretzels, cookies, or almonds, but it’s not. There is so much more. I recently moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where I am based. The travel life has been a dream, and I can’t tell you just in words how much I love it. I have never felt more at home than in the aisle of an aircraft. My real home has been found in the sky at 35,000 feet! Fly Delta, and I hope to possibly

have you on my flight! While in training for three and one-half weeks in Minneapolis, Minnesota, many lifelong friendships were made along with plenty of sightseeing - including the Mall of America! Never would I have thought that over 500 stores, an i n d o o r amusement park with roller coasters, zipline rides, water log ride, and plenty of restaurants could all fit under one roof! Downtown Minnie was amazing to see even, especially when it was just in time for the Super Bowl. Continued on Page 9.

I enjoyed a very special moment - and photo - at last weekend’s TABA Home and Garden SPJST Car Show. When I was an SPJST youth club member, Patsy Koslovsky, left, was my District Youth Counselor, and Rose (Harvell) Williams, center, was my youth leader.

W

e enjoyed a fantastic weekend on Friday, February 23 to Sunday, February 25 at the Temple Area Builders Association Home and Garden Show. SPJST sponsored the car show that attracted 42 vehicles that were displayed. It was a cool, rainy weekend outside, but it was warm and cozy inside the exposition building. A big thanks to all of the SPJST members who stopped by during the weekend to visit. We enjoyed seeing everyone. I appreciate Brooke Hoelscher, Patsy Koslovsky, Hiram Dixon, Charlie Herendon, Brian and Joan Vanicek, and David Nauert for all of their assistance throughout the weekend. It was a great success! On Saturday afternoon, Patsy was meeting and greeting visitors at the SPJST booth. A very sweet lady came up and was talking about her great memories with SPJST and the youth program. Patsy immediately recognized her as past Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Leader Rose Harvell. Patsy called me over, and what a surprise it was to see my former youth leader when I was an SPJST youth club member! We all hugged, reminesced, and caught up with each other. Rose (who is now Rose Williams) served as youth leader at Lodge 24 in the late 1980s. Her visit made the weekend very special!

Serenade your co-workers . . . Make Music Day is June 21

What: Make Music Day arrives to Austin. Serenade your Co-Workers When: Thursday, June 21, 2018

Where: Multiple venues, homes, businesses, roofs, and sidewalks all over the planet.

Dear SPJST Lodge Halls, makemusicday.org is a worldwide free music celebration. It started in France 30 years ago as Fe’te de la Musique, and it is now in more than 800 cities around the world. The celebration takes place on T h u r s d a y, June 21, on Solstice day. The American version of Fe’te de la Musique is called Make Music Day. We know you like live music! We want to invite your venue to participate. There is no charge to you. Moreover, it is easy to participate by registering at http://www.makemusicday.org/austin/ Last year, more than 800 cities around the world threw citywide music celebrations on June 21.

About Make Music It all started 35 years ago in France. In 1982, France’s Ministry of Culture dreamed up an idea for a new kind of musical holiday. They imagined a day where free, live music would be everywhere: street corners and parks, rooftops and gardens, store fronts, and mountaintops.

And, unlike a typical music festival, anyone and everyone would be invited to join and play music, or host performances. The event would take place on the summer solstice, June 21, and would be called Fête De La Musique. (In French, the name means both “festival of music” and “make music!”) Amazingly enough, this dream has come true. The Fête has turned into a true national holiday: France shuts down on the summer solstice, and musicians take over. Almost 8 percent of the country (5 million people) have played an instrument or sung in public for the Fête de la Musique. Three decades later, the holiday has spread throughout the world and is now celebrated in more than 120 countries. In the United States, the presenting sponsor is the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation. If you have any questions, contact alex@specialeventslive.com or 512574-6153. • • Work at Camp Kubena This Summer! • • Benefits of Working at Camp Kubena

Is it possible to have a super fun job, that pays well AND looks great on your resume? YES, and it is working at Camp Kubena! The decision to work as activity staff at Camp Kubena will prepare you for many upcoming life events whether that be continuing higher education, entering the work force, anything that requires maturity and personal responsibility. Listed below are just a few of the many skills, according to the American Camp Association, that activity staff can learn and enhance while working at a summer camp:

• Collaborative Skills. Staff members begin the summer with training and learning from each other on how to handle the various aspects of camp life and the best way to work with one another to ensure the best possible camp community we can create for our campers. • Problem Solving. Being able to problem solve is one of the greatest life skills one can learn but learning how to really think on your feet while leading activities with campers can help prepare you for so much more in life.

• Communication. Communication is important in all aspects of camp, it could be talking to coworkers about schedules for the day, discussing an idea you have on how to improve an activity to a director, helping parents

feel comfortable leaving their children at camp, or helping a camper who has never been away from home without their parents see how there isn’t time to be homesick because there are so many fun activities at camp.

• Creativity. Thinking outside the box to create a game for your campers when rain has changed your outside activity into an inside one.

• Leadership Skills. Working at a summer camp is a great way to enhance leadership skills. Our staff get the opportunity to lead in facilitating each of our activities and even help campers step up into leadership roles themselves during teambuilding activities such as low ropes.

These are just a few of the major resume building skills to give you that extra confidence boost when taking the next steps in life as a young adult. What are you waiting for?

State Fraternal Director shares March updates

It’s Save Your Vision Month! National Save Your Vision Month designates the month of March to promote eye health. This year, the “focus” is on digital eyestrain and the importance of receiving regular, comprehensive eye exams. The American Optometric Association’s (AOA) 2016 American EyeQ® survey revealed that 88 percent of Americans know that digital devices can negatively affect their vision, but the average American still spends seven or more hours per day looking at their screens. (Of course, for those of us who work on computers, that number is probably higher!) This overexposure to blue light—high-energy visible light emitted from digital devices—can lead to eye strain, sleep problems, blurred vision, headaches, and neck and shoulder pain, among other things. Too much exposure to blue light adds up and can also lead to eye diseases like macular degeneration. In addition, the survey indicates that the average millennial spends nine hours per day on devices such as smartphones, tablets, LED monitors, and at screen televisions, which also emit blue light. Kids are definitely at risk for too much blue light exposure. Lots of them do homework online. Plenty of children have their own tablets and phones as well, and their eyes are still developing the protective pigments that filter out blue light. Just like with UV radiation, most blue light expo-

• Unplug with the 20-20-20 rule: When you are using any device or computer, take a 20-second break every 20 minutes and focus your eyes on something at least 20 feet away. (It takes 20 seconds for your eyes to relax.) • Take care of glare: While many new phones and laptops have glass screens with excellent picture quality, they also produce a strong glare that can aggravate the eyes. If you use a glass screen device, try a matte filter for your screen.

• Stay at arm’s length: The eyes actually have to work harder to see close up than far away. If you have a desktop computer, try placing the monitor 25 inches away from your face. No measuring tape? Put your screen an arm’s length away. You may need to adjust the font to appear larger at that distance. • Lighten up: When your screen is much brighter than your surroundings, your eyes have to work harder to see. Adjusting your environmental lighting can reduce eye strain. Also, try adjusting the contrast on your monitor.

Come to Camp Kubena! Lodge Officers, please share this information with your members with children in your lodge. We want you to come join us at Camp Kubena! Fun times ahead! We are extending an invitation to SPJST youth who are not part of a lodge youth club and the youth who are new to SPJST. Youth who have a life insurance certificate issued before May 31, 2018, can come join us at camp!

Lodge 24, Cyclone appreciates attendees at Red Ravens dance

SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone is in debt to the dancers who were in attendance at the Red Ravens dance on Sunday, February 18, 2018. Most all of the people were from long distances of Flag Hall. The road construction on Interstate 35 and the bridge closure on FM 485 did not help their cause. They had real dedication to complete their trek to the dance. Also, Alfred Vrazel playing with the band hightened everyone’s pleasure.

Happy Birthday, Linda! In the writer’s letter in the February 28 Vestnik, Linda Wilde’s birthday was omitted from the report. Sincere apology is extended.

Lodge 25, Ennis opens doors to host Helicopters for Heroes event

Dear Readers, Helicopters for Heroes (H4H) is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping and uplifting our wounded veterans. H4H was established in 2014, as an outdoor three-day weekend of fun at the gun range, flying, and hunting, to honor our wounded veterans. This annual outdoor event which is held in Ennis, Texas, includes live music, food, fellowship, and fun. It also raises money from individuals, as well as from businesses and major corporate sponsors. Proceeds from the fundraiser go directly to charities for causes that

help men and women who have sacrificed so much. The 2018 annual outdoor event was scheduled for Friday, February 23 to Sunday, February 25 with a major sponsors’ meeting on Thursday, February 22. However, this year, Mother Nature had different plans for the outdoor event. Rain! It rained every day in Ennis for 10 days prior to the planned events, and more rain was forecasted for the weekend. These rains caused major flooding in the area where the wounded veterans and sponsors were supposed to gather, meet, socialize, eat,

and enjoy the live music. Board members of H4H approached SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis on February 21 - just one day prior to their planned weekend. They were faced with making the challenging decision to either cancel, postpone, or try to find a place to move the events indoors. With wounded veterans and sponsors flying in from around the country, Lodge 25 opened its doors and called upon our wonderful group of volunteers to help salvage the weekend for our wounded veterans. Rains lifted early Saturday afternoon with beautiful clear skies on Sunday

giving the wounded veterans the opportunity to fly, shoot, and hunt. The weekend was a huge success, and the veterans had a memorable weekend! Thank you, Helicopters for Heroes, for choosing our lodge. We are humbled and honored to help serve those who served us. For more information about the organization, visit www.helicoptersforheroes.com. Respectfully submitted, Margaret Krajca Reporter —SPJST—

Come to Camp Kubena! We want you to come join us at Camp Kubena! Fun times ahead! We are extending an invitation to SPJST youth who are not part of a lodge youth club and the youth who are new to SPJST. Youth who have a life insurance certificate issued before May 31, 2018, can come join us at camp! Camp is a great place to make new friends and build self confidence. Camp Kubena offers swimming, games, high ropes courses, low ropes courses, BB guns, archery, and many other activities.

Qualifications for Camp If your child has completed kindergarten and is a current youth club member and has made seven out of 12 meetings, the child will be eligible to attend camp without pay.

Youth who attend lodges with no youth club can attend seven adult meetings and qualify for camp without pay. The lodge secretary will need to provide the Home Office with copies of the membership roster for each meeting the youth attended. Youth that have not made at least seven meetings will be prorated $35 per meeting missed. Youth can make up a meeting by attending another local youth club. Please see your youth leader about this.

Backing the Blob Update—The Blob was purchased at a discounted price of $3,800. We are close to meeting that goal. As of February 23, we have collected $2,400. We have 11 donations made by youth clubs, lodges, districts, and directors. Please keep sending in those donations to P.O. Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503. Our youth greatly appreciate your support. What is a Blue Moon?

A blue moon is what people call the second of two full Moons that appear during the same month. A second full Moon can appear within the same month because full Moons occur about every 29.5 days. So, if a full Moon occurs on the first day or two of a month, except for February, a second full Moon can occur during one of the last days of that month as well. By the way, it doesn't actually look blue! The term “blue Moon” is simply an expresseion that references an occurrence that doesn’t happen very often. In 2018, there were two full Moons in January, and there will also be two in March in most time zones. This is sometimes called a double blue Moon. Double blue Moons happen only about three to five times in a century. The last time this occurred, was in 1999. The next year that will have two months with two full Moons is 2037. 1. Dear Readers, We had a winter break, and I went snow skiing in New Mexico. It was a lot of fun, and I met new friends. Sincerely, Rileigh Kitchen, age 11 —SPJST—

Last summer at Camp Kubena, the Blob received a non-repairable tear. The Blob is one of the most loved activities offered at camp. This air-filled “pillow” allows an individual to jump on from a platform above and crawl to the end. Once in place, a second individual jumps onto the Blob and shoots the first person in the air, who lands safely in the water below. The cost to replace The Blob is $4,400. SPJST has 33 active youth clubs, and if each youth club was to donate $150, we would be able to purchase a new Blob and pay for the shipping cost. This amount of money

could easily be raised with a bake sale or some other small fundraiser. Please consider getting your youth together to plan a fundraiser to make a donation towards the purchase of a new Blob. So far, we have received some very generous donations from districts, youth clubs, adults, and lodges that equals a whopping $2,650! Thank you to these members, lodges, districts, and youth clubs for their continuous support of the camp and youth. We need your help! Let’s do this! Frank Horak State Fraternal Director —SPJST—

gust. Contestants must be between the ages of 16 and 26 years, a member of Czech Heritage Society (CHS) of Texas, willing to travel to Czech events and represent CHS across the state of Texas. She must be of partial Czech, Moravian, Slovak, Rusyn, or Silesian descent. The queen candidate must complete four categories of the pageant at the chapter and state levels: private interview, on-stage interview, talent, and kroj modeling, either Americanized or authentic. Texas is blessed to be a large state with many Czech festivals, events, and communities. Texas Czechs have not forgotten their ancestors’ journey by ship for a better life in America. The immigrants did not speak English and sold all of their worldly possessions to purchase their passage in hopes of a better life. They quickly proved their strong work ethic, faith, extreme pride in their heritage, and musical talents. They provided for their families by raising livestock, poultry, and boasted the best crops and fertile farmland. Their excellent sausage, kolaches, and pastries are now world renowned. Our rich history invites our prideful traditions to be passed down by these contestants through our pageant so others can honor their family history and uphold our deep cultural roots. Czech Heritage Society of Texas has 15 chapters including Bexar, Brazos Valley, Burleson, Concho Valley, Ellis, Fayette, Fort Bend, Galveston, Gonzales, Harris, Lavaca, McLennan-Hill, Travis-Williamson, Victoria, and Wharton. Please contact a representative from a local chapter or go to the website at www.czechheritage.org for more information about membership and representing a chapter for the Miss Texas Czech-Slovak pageant. Czech Heritage Society of Texas is a

non-profit organization founded in 1982, dedicated to preservation of Texas Czech heritage: genealogy, history, music, customs, food, costumes, and language.

Amanda Gajdosik Miss Texas Czech Slovak Queen 2004 McLennan-Hill County “I love sharing my experience of holding the Miss Texas Czech-Slovak Queen title with others, especially those who do not know much about the Czech culture. It brings joy to my heart to see the fascination people have with our ancestral kroje, handmade kolaches, and polka dance. I would never have guessed that after 14 years since I held the title the impact the journey continues to make on my daily life. I make a point every year to participate with the Czech friends I have made in my hometown festival displaying our costumes, attending local chapter meetings when visiting family, and reading the monthly newsletter from our state board. I encourage every girl of Czech descent to embrace your heritage, learn all you can, and cherish the memories of those you meet along the way. My experience has placed so many remarkable people in my path and I am who I am today because of their generosity and friendship.”

Marianne Beran Terrell Miss Texas Czech Slovak 2007 Burleson County “I don’t think I could fit in a nutshell all that I’ve learned and grown from participating in the Miss Texas Czech-Slovak Queen competition. You learn how to effectively speak to individuals from all walks of life. It creates contacts and networks that have continued into my life today, I have a deeper appreciation and knowledge for my ancestral culture. My participation created a greater understanding for how and why the Czech culture has survived so strongly and is celebrated, I now know why my Grandpa always told me to be proud I was Mora-

vian and I feel it too. Even today, 10 years after I won my title, the dedication and commitment expressed during my reign still impresses people I meet in my personal and professional life.”

Michelle Barak McGovern Miss Texas Czech Slovak Queen 2009 Ellis County “The pageant initially caught my attention as an opportunity to celebrate my ancestors and the adventurous lives they led, but I quickly became aware that competing for the title of Miss Texas Czech-Slovak Queen was a life-changing decision. I didn’t realize how important the title was until I was center-stage. I was getting invitations to festivals and dances all over the state! There was never a shortage of opportunities to show off my kroj! I’m grateful for those invitations because I wouldn’t have known had I not been personally invited. Remembering those dances are some of my best memories. I met people with similar values about our shared heritage, and it strengthened my own values. It is outstanding how supportive and friendly Czech people can be! Being a part of the Miss Texas Czech-Slovak Queen Pageant helped me not only celebrate and honor my ancestors in the most active and lively way, but it changed my life. I can now say that I truly know what an honor it is for me to be a CzechAmerican.”

Allison Sexton Miss Texas Czech Slovak 2015 McLennan-Hill County “When I first won Miss Texas CzechSlovak Queen in 2015, I was still a shy teenager trying to figure out high school. After attending a few events as queen, I learned to speak more eloquently and overcame my fear of public speaking, which has helped me immensely in college. I traveled to many different places across Texas, which also helped bring out my outgoing personality. Being involved in the Czech Heritage Society allowed me to meet more people and to establish

friendships and acquaintances with those I have met. I was able to share the history of my great-great- grandparents and their journey from the Czech Republic to McLennan County. I believe that being Miss Texas Czech-Slovak Queen has been a rewarding experience that I will cherish forever.”

Caitlin Orsak Miss Texas Czech Slovak 2012 Lavaca County “Of all the activities I was involved in one of my favorite things to do while being Queen was going to the festivals. I tried to attend as many of them as I could. Every town is filled with amazing people, and each was welcoming and offered a great time for both myself and my family. One of the most heart warming events I attended was the Christmas Around the World Program at Humble Elementary in Houston. The students were so interested in the Czech culture and had a blast learning about our heritage, eating kolaches, and taking pictures with myself and St. Mikuláš. Taking the time to get to know the people around me and trying new traditions allowed me to grow into a more confident and happy woman. The individuals I met while going through this adventure have become a lifelong support system. This experience will help you embrace your Czech culture and who you are. The biggest lesson I have learned from my time as a Miss Texas Czech-Slovak Queen is to never forget where you come from because that is the knowledge that will lead you into your future.”

Sarah Middlebrook Armor Miss Texas Czech Slovak 2006 Miss Czech Slovak US Queen 2006 McLennan-Hill “The Miss Texas Czech Slovak Pageant provided me with opportunities I could have never imagined. Along with meeting esteemed dignitaries such as the President of the Czech Republic, Madeline Albright, Jim Lovell, and Eugene Cernan, I’ve established lifelong friendships with Czechs across the United States from Florida to Alaska. My fondest memories range from extravagant trips to places like the Czech Embassy in Washington D.C. to Czech Youth Day in La Grange, Texas.

Brianna Blattman Miss Texas Czech Slovak 2017 McLennan-Hill “I am beyond blessed to have had the opportunity to be the Miss McLennan-Hill County and Texas Czech-Slovak Queen. It has taught me to want to learn about something that is foreign to me—literally. I have found interest in immersing myself

into something that is out of my comfort zone of knowledge. In the process of these pageants, it has been an amazing learning experience of studying and familiarizing myself with new information and presenting it to others. It has truly given me a greater appreciation for my rich culture. It has also given me an immense appreciation for the people that have made it possible for me to do that and for the people who have continued those efforts.” Submitted by, Jana Riley Czech Heritage Society of Texas —SPJST—

Czech Center Museum Houston shares latest news

A Little Love Goes a Long Way Tight funds put the museum in a serious situation We could not be more grateful for those who have supported our museum and allowed us to remain a cultural beacon for the Czech Republic and European history. Sadly, our museum has suffered from the devastating hurricane that hit Houston in 2017. We had to do a lot of maintenance on our first and third floors which have cost us quite a bit of money. The Czech Center is a vibrant cultural and educational center with a variety of artifacts and exhibits dedicated to Czech and European history, but compared to other museums around Houston, our resources are limited. We have two staff members who work around the clock to keep our museum up and running. Our collective group of volunteers give their time to giving tours and thinking of new ideas to better the Czech center. Our dedicated group of board members, including founders Bill and Effie Rosene, are the foundation that made this cultural and educational organization possible. The Czech Center cannot continue as a non-profit organization without the generosity of those who believe in our mission and the beauty of this palacelike building. We are in desperate need of funds to be able to give tours and host

events. Any amount of money is appreciated. The money will be put into restoring parts of the museum, creating new exhibits about Czech history, and modernizing the museum as a whole. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you have done for our beloved institution. Please call 713-5282060 for giving information,

Fashion Forward Thinking Here at the Czech Center, we had the pleasure of auctioning off one of Oscar de la Renta’s famous dresses at our 2017 annual gala. The dress went to Denise Mazal, the owner/chef of the Little Gretel restaurant in Boerne, Texas. Inspired by the exclusive dress she took home from the Czech Museum, Denise planned a trip to the Museum of Fine Arts to view the Oscar De La Renta exhibit. This trip took her months of meticulous effort to prepare. She purchased a ticket over the internet, expecting to explore the beautiful creations of the renowned fashion designer. However, Denise’s hopes were dashed when she saw the museum was closed to the public due to inclement weather. She persisted and convinced the guard and museum staff to open the museum just for her to see the dresses she was so fond of. The museum staff gave Denise a private tour of the De La Renta collection.

The Story Behind the Designer Oscar de la Renta was a DominicanAmerican fashion designer that became well-known in the 1960s for dressing Jacqueline Kennedy. He was regarded as an unofficial ambassador of the Dominican Republic and had a diplomatic passport, along with homes in Casa de Campo and Punta Cana in addition to his residence in Kent, Connecticut. At age 18, De la Renta went to Spain to study painting at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. He began to sketch for Spanish fashion houses, growing in reputation. In 1961, he joined Antonio del Castillo as a couture assistant at Lanvin in Paris. De la Renta worked for Arden in New York City for two years before leaving to work for Jane Derby, an American fashion house. De la Renta took over the label when Derby died in 1965. De La Renta designed the haute couture collection for the house of Balmain. This made history as he was the first Dominican to design for a French couture house. De la Renta specialized in ready-to-wear designs that were embraced by many celebrities including

Scarlett Johannsen, Katy Perry, and Oprah Winfrey.

A Magical Night of Music The Houston Grand Opera Studio comes to the Czech Center With commanding performances that enraptured the audience, two singers from the Houston Grand Opera Studio performed at the Czech Center on the night of February 17. The Soprano Mane Galoyan and Baritone Thomas Glass were selected specifically by the HGO Studio to sing a repertoire of works by renowned composers. People began arriving around 6:30 p.m. to be seated. Drinks and snacks were served as people anticipated for the upcoming performance. By 7 p.m., all the seats were filled, and the opera singers accompanied by pianist Blair Slater charmed the audience with their captivating voices and animated gestures. This was truly an enchanting night of fine arts.

A Colorful Addition to the Museum The Charalampous Exhibition We opened an exhibit which featured art from the collection of Dr. Kanellos Charalampous. About Czech Center Museum Houston (CCMH) The Czech Center Museum Houston is proud to be one of Houston’s 18 fine museums, dedicated to the exploration and preservation of Czech and Slovak heritage. There are estimated 1 million persons of that descent living in the state of Texas who have contributed significantly to the development of Texas and most certainly to our nation. Not only do we further the public’s knowledge of Czech and Slovak culture, but we also serve as a catalyst for discussion of all heritages, as we become a citizen of the world when we know our hosts; at the same time this lends to a more civil society. Furthermore, our beautiful Baroque Palace is the perfect venue for almost any kind of event. We have hosted an array of events including concerts, seminars, CCMH Mapperfor-
