pring is almost here, and I’m so excited to see the trees budding, flowers blooming, and more daylight in the evenings! It’s also the time for district spring meetings. The first one is this Sunday, March 18. District Two will host its meeting at Lodge 29, Taylor. Lodges are also planning Easter egg hunts and other spring activities. It’s a great time of year! I encourage you to save an important spring date on your calendar! Saturday, May 5 is the 13th Annual SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration at Lodge 47, Seaton. A full day of family fun for all ages is planned with beautiful vehicles to look at, food, music and entertainment, and arts/crafts/vendor booths. Plus, a super-looking, red 1966 Ford Mustang will be given away to a very lucky winner! Stay tuned for more event details - or visit spjstcarshow.org for all of the information. Czech Heritage Museum Board of Directors Elections The board of directors for the Czech Heritage Museum met recently to clarify the election process and terms for board members. Text from the meeting minutes appears on page 12 of this week’s Věstník. Members from Districts Two, Four, and Six will be elected at upcoming district spring meetings in 2018 (even-numbered years). Members from Districts One, Three, Five, and Seven will be elected at the 2019 district spring meetings (odd-numbered years).

Sincere Sympathy We extend heartfelt sympathy to Districts Four and Seven Fraternal Field Manager Bobby Davis and his family. Bobby’s brother Gary Wayne Davis, 63, passed away Friday, February 23. A service was held Monday, February 26 at Fairmount Cemetery in San Angelo. We extend heartfelt sympathy to Finance Committee Secretary Marceil Malak and her family. Sister Marceil’s husband William Michael Malak, 85, of Ledbetter, passed away Friday, March 2. Brother Malak was a 52-year member of Lodge 88, Houston. Funeral service was held at Carmine Lutheran Church on Tuesday, March 6, and burial was at Waldeck Cemetery in Waldeck. Our thoughts and prayers are with both Brother Davis and Sister Malak and their families.

Just a quick note to remind you that it is time again for the District Two Spring Meeting! Lodge 29, Taylor will host the meeting on Sunday, March 18, 2018, at its hall - 5025 FM 619. The lodge will serve a great meal for everyone to enjoy - catfish, red beans, coleslaw, French fries, hush puppies, tea, and cake. All of this will only cost $3. We are asking that you paint a rock.

The rock can be the size of the palm of your hand. This contest is like when we did the egg decorating . . . decorate your rock anyway you like. Lodge 4, Hallettsville announces longtime members

Dear Members, SPJST Lodge 4, Hallettsville met Sunday, February 11, 2018, at the chamber meeting room at 3 p.m. with Vice President Annie Vahalik presiding. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Resolution Committee Gayenell Chudej read a resolution of sympathy for Craig Joseph Mikush followed by a moment of silence. Secretary-Treasurer Helen Zabransky read the minutes to the last meeting and gave the financial report. Under correspondence, Secretary Helen read the names of our 50-year members for 2018 - Joseph Jonietz, Sylvia June Jurena, August A. Kalmus, Richard L. Koerth, Wanda Marie Mikush, Katherine R. A thank you note was read for our contribution to the Lavaca County St. Nicholas Ministry. FAC Annie Vahalik reported on upcoming SPJST tournaments and activities. Annie, accompanied by family friend LaVerne Townsend with Vlasta Bartos and Mary Ann Cerny, both of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje, participated in the State Progressive 42 Domino Tournament on January 13 in Temple. would be workdays at the hall. Under old business, the District Six Spring Meeting was discussed. We will co-host it with Lodge 63, Sweet Home on April 15 at St. Mary’s Hall. Door prize winners were Marlyn Sevcik, Helen Zabransky, and Philip Vahalik. Meeting was then adjourned. FAC Annie led members in games, which was a lot of fun. Being close to Valentine’s Day, the prizes were red goodies or packaged with red. Afterward, a delicious lunch was enjoyed.

Lodge 15, Buckholts plans hall updates

The February 12, 2018, meeting of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts was held at 5:30 p.m. All officers were present. President Mary Helen Rodriguez called the meeting to order. Vice President Scott Brandon led the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence for our deceased members and military serving our country. Sandie Fischer gave the minutes and treasurer’s report. We discussed preparations for the upcoming pool night, and as soon as we can get the butane and our grill working together, we will serve burgers for fundraising for our ongoing restoration. We again want to thank Milam County Historical Society for the recent grant received. We really appreciate this generous grant for the restoration of our beloved hall. President Rodriguez has received one quote for refinishing the dance floor. We also will be contacting the Texas Dance Hall Preservation organization. I’ll have more info on that at the March meeting. A big thank you to Pete Rodriguez, Lupe Balderos, and Robert Ulicnik for crawling under the building and removing unwanted debris.

Under new business, the finishing of the hall improvements were discussed. Dear Readers, The monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge 142, Houston was held on Sunday, February 18, 2018. At 1 p.m., a social was held, and a delicious meal of chopped beef sandwiches, chips, and dessert was served. A prayer of thanks was led by Dennis Hermis. The meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Keith Kieschnick, the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Karley Kieschnick in the absence of Flag Bearer Zoe Saxton. Roll call of officers showed all present except for Guide Carol LaPaglia. We had 33 members and eight guests in attendance. A moment of silence was observed for our departed member Nelson Jochen. Barbara Linney-Gonzalez spoke on the youth leader retreat, counselor training, and needing chaperones for camp. Bradley Stavinoha spoke on updates. Lodge 48, Beyersville hosts Progressive Straight Domino Tournament

It was another enjoyable day of dominoes for the 36 participants in the Lodge 48, Beyersville Progressive Straight Domino Tournament held on Saturday, February 24, 2018. A total of nine games were played. First place went to Bobby Beran with nine wins. Second place went to Steve Lopez with eight wins. Third place went to Jason Beran with seven wins. There

were four players with six wins who were tied for fourth place: Ernest Dietrich with 4,845 points; Harvey Patschke with 3,520 points; Nancy Leshikar with 3,495 points; and Mark Brezina with 3,270 points. Ernest Dietrich took fourth place with the most points and received a set of SPJST dominoes. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed a delicious noon meal of roast

District Two youth to participate in spring meeting this Sunday

Dear Members, I hope you are making plans to attend the District Two Spring Meeting which will be held on Sunday, March 18, 2018, at Lodge 29, Taylor. Of course, this is the yearly business meeting. Any youth members interested in being a District Two Flag Bearer, please let me know prior to the Saturday before. Flag bearers need to be able to attend both district meetings and District and State YADs. Registration of your decorated rock contest entry will be from 1 to 2 p.m. All entries must be registered prior to 2 p.m. Please check your youth handbook, page 38, for the criteria. Remember, you can use more than paints to decorate. Get creative! If you have any questions, please give me a call. All youth will receive participation money and first, second, and third places in each age category will be awarded. Get your parents to also enter. Let’s make this a fun contest! The District Two Youth Club will have a silent auction to help defray camp

expenses and district activities. We will appreciate any items brought and bid on. Each youth club is encouraged to bring an item. Your support is very much appreciated! Lodge 80, Holland Youth Club hosts Easter Egg Hunt

Lodge 80, Holland invites all to an Easter egg hunt on Saturday, March 17 at 2 p.m. at the lodge hall in Holland. Children ages 10 and under are invited to bring their basket to hunt eggs. The event includes prizes, crafts, Easter Bunny visit, and refreshments. All children who bring a box of cereal will be entered to win $50. The youth club will also hold a membership drive.

Today, there were 13 youth club members and three visitors in attendance. Treasurer’s report was read by Lisa Bubela. The youth club cleaned and pressure washed the Taiton Community Center inside and outside, and new flowers were planted in the planter boxes by the sign. Under new business, all youth and LITs were advised that applications are now being accepted for summer camp. On March 11, Taiton Spring Festival will

be held at Taiton Community Center, and the youth club will be working the cake walk. We agreed to donate to the SPJST Car Show in May to be held at Lodge 47, Seaton. We discussed the banquet on May 6 and will discuss it in detail at the next meeting. We also discussed the Easter egg hunt which is Sunday, March 25 at St. John Hall in Taiton. All youth were advised about painted rock contest. The District Six Spring Meeting will be Sunday, April 15 at St. Mary’s hall in Hallettsville. Czech Heritage Museum Board of Directors elections coming soon

The board of directors for the Czech Heritage Museum met recently to clarify the election process and terms for board members. Following is the text from the minutes of the last quarterly meeting. Please note that this year, members from Districts Two, Four, and Six will be elected. (These elections may be conducted in conjunction with the district spring meetings.)

Meeting in Temple on December 4, 2017, the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center Board of Directors discussed the need to clarify and communicate the election process and terms for directors of the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center. As a result of that discussion, the following rules and guidelines for were adopted:

1. The Board of Directors of the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center is comprised of up to 12 individuals. Acknowledging SPJST’s longstanding support of the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, seven of these board members shall be SPJST members, elected from the seven districts. The president of SPJST shall serve as the eighth member of the Board and four more persons may be elected as board members. A call for Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center candidates is made in the Vestnik at least two weeks in advance of the District Spring Meetings. In the event that there is more than one candidate, voting will be by secret ballot. Two people, who must not be Museum directors, will act as tellers.

The following election schedule will apply:

Districts One, Three, Five, and Seven: Elections will be held in 2019, 2021, 2023, and so on. Districts Two, Four, and Six: Elections will be held in 2018, 2020, 2022, and so on.

2. The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center Board of Directors reserves the right to elect an additional four at-large directors. These are two-year term voting positions. To be elected, a candidate must receive votes marked with his or her name from a majority of the Board Members then in office. Terms of office for at-large directors coincide with their designation to the Board. At-large directors will be considered for reelection on the anniversary date of their designation to the Board of Directors.

3. Meeting to Conduct Election of Officers. On an annual basis, the Czech Heritage Museum Board of Directors shall have an annual meeting in the month of July to elect officers. The SPJST President shall preside over the initial part of the meeting to elect the President. The President shall then assume office and preside over the remainder of the meeting. The remaining statutory officer positions are then elected. All voting Board Members in office who are present at the meeting may vote in officer elections.

4. Board meetings are held monthly on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. Board Members who participate remotely via electronic means such that they can contemporaneously hear all other Board Members at the meeting, and be heard by all

other Board Members at the meeting, shall be deemed to be present at the meeting. Pre-voting and voting by proxy are not permitted for election of officers. Quarterly board meetings are held in April, July, October, and December.

Wednesdays Taylor Czech Speaking Class meets every Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living, 505 East Lake Drive in Taylor. Each year, Travis- Williamson Counties Czech Heritage Society members attend seven meetings in the Pflugerville/Austin area and two in Taylor.
