State Duchess’ Notebook
Dear Readers, I’m having so much fun being SPJST State Duchess! And, I’m having fun with my beautiful Queen April. My favorite memory with her so far is the Christmas parade. At our last meeting, April made me a pearl bracelet that has the word “Duchess” on it. I can’t wait for the other state activities. During spring break, I stayed at my Grandma and Grandpa Holland’s house, and we also helped set up tables at the hall. Fraternally yours, Madison Holland State Duchess —SPJST—
State Duke’s Notebook
Dear Readers, I had so much fun on spring break working on Youth Achievement Day (YAD) projects at my grandparents’ house. See you soon at our next royalty event! Fraternally yours, Maison Holland State Duke —SPJST

A
s Robert Burns said, “The bestlaid plans of mice and men often go awry.” This week’s Věstník is a perfect example of that! For months, I had planned that the March 21 issue would include the 2018 Life Insurance and Annuity Extra. The plan was also for this week’s issue to be combined and therefore, we would not have a Vestnik mailed during the week of March 28 (one of our seven nonprinting weeks). However, the Life Insurance and Annuity Extra is not included in this issue—and we will publish a March 28 Vestnik that will feature the insurance and annuity products . . . or at least that’s the plan! We have published a couple of smaller than usual Věstníks recently. As a result, important material from our districts, lodges, and youth clubs became backlogged. Instead of holding the material for a couple more weeks, I decided to include the information in this week’s paper and run the special insurance issue next week. Thanks to Vice President Hiram Dixon for working with me to delay the insurance issue for one week. The newspaper industry across the globe is experiencing a paper shortage. The situation started to unfold late last year after two paper mills closed down in North America. Manufacturers are running behind, which means all newsprint shipments are being delayed across the United
States. We have been working very closely with our printer - Temple Daily Telegram - and making adjustments to the Věstník. In addition, U.S. Department of Commerce just announced heavy tariffs on the North American paper supply. Canadian producers supply most of the US newsprint. Publishers from nearly 30 states are visiting Washington, D.C., to voice their complaints about the trade case on Capitol Hill. We will continue to monitor the newsprint situation and adjust accordingly. A very special thanks to each Věstník contributor for sharing news, information, articles, and photos for our weekly newspaper. If you send something in and you do not see it in the Věstník within a couple weeks, please contact me. I appreciate your continued submissions and your patience. From the SPJST Foundation Come one, come all . . . SPJST Founders Day celebration May 19 at Lodge 1, Fayetteville
SPJST, chartered in 1897, was established “to extend benevolent assistance to the members . . . and to those who are dependent upon them . . . and to promote charity among all such persons.” Pioneering from its beginning by initiating women as well as men, SPJST grew from its charter membership of 866 members and 25 lodges to 39,975 members and 100 lodges today. Within SPJST, fraternalism embodies the bonding of men, women, boys, and girls of various backgrounds, beliefs, and eras around a singular set of life-directing commitments. It’s all about being good to each other and doing good for the communities that we serve!
Save the Date! Over the years, SPJST has become an integral part of many lives and one of the many reasons that we will be celebrating the premier SPJST Founders Day Celebration at SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville on Saturday, May 19, 2018. Founders Day will be a time to reflect on the mission, purpose, and ideals upon which SPJST was founded. It is a time to celebrate and join in fellowship with members as well as to celebrate the accomplishments of our fraternal order, lodges, and members. It’s also a chance to get together and have a good time!
The SPJST Foundation in Action The 2018 Founders Day is a pilot project of The SPJST Foundation. The Foundation was established as an independent 501(c)3 non-profit corporation by SPJST in 2012 to support endeavors of significant merit and in line with the Foundation’s objectives. I would love to see the Founders Day concept take root and become a much-anticipated annual event celebrated at a different lodge or locale each year with the proceeds going to benefit the host lodge or lodges. The SPJST Foundation is working with the members of Lodge 1, Fayetteville in hosting this first event for the simple reason that the city of Fayetteville was the home base of SPJST’s operations from 1897 through 1953. Many SPJST members have never had the chance to explore and experience the history and charm of Fayetteville. This inaugural event provides that opportunity!
Founders Day Activities All SPJST members are invited to join in the Founders Day event. The day-long celebration starts with a catered turkey and dressing dinner starting at 11 a.m. and will include lots of wonderful music, dancing, cornhole tournament, and a huge prize drawing sponsored by the lodge. Some very special guest visitors are expected to be in attendance! Later that evening, SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville hosts the Founders Day Dance beginning at 7 p.m. Please see the Founders Day program in this issue for complete details! Attendees may very well want to make this a Founders Day Weekend! The entire city of Fayetteville is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Here’s a fun fact: The 345 historic structures in town outnumber local citizens! This is a town that is proud of its history and its culture. On a related note, the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC) in nearby La Grange will be hosting its annual Slavnost celebration the next day. The old SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad hall — which is in the process of being restored — is located on the grounds of the TCHCC. For details on that event, please visit the website www.czechtexas.com
About Our Host Lodge History truly resonates within the walls of the SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville meeting hall in Fayetteville, Texas. The celebrated building received a Texas historical marker in 2013 and remains virtually unchanged since it was built in 1910. For more than a century, the woodframe building has been the gathering place for dances, community events, wedding receptions, and other family celebrations. The hall was home for the renowned Baca Family Band and at one time served as a gymnasium for the Fayetteville High School boys’ basketball team. Fair and livestock shows, baseball games, and fundraisers of all kinds contribute to the property’s storied past. Your Support Is Appreciated! We will never know all of the stories, experiences and characters whose histories are linked to the Fayetteville meeting hall; however, we do know that time has

taken its toll on the structure. Proceeds raised from the event sponsors will help to ensure that the historic lodge hall remains in good condition for present and future generations to experience and enjoy. Your tax-deductible gift — in any amount — is greatly appreciated. All donors will be recognized in the printed program of the SPJST Founders Day Celebration. Individuals, lodges, organizations, or businesses contributing $500 or more will also receive a sponsor table for six at the noon luncheon. Checks may be made payable to:
The SPJST Foundation P.O. Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503
If you have any questions, please call me at 254-534-2902 or email me at vanicek@spjst.com. Thank you for your kind attention, and I look forward to seeing you in Fayetteville on May 19! Fraternally, Brian Vanicek SPJST Foundation President —SPJST—

After supper, our monthly meeting was called to order at 7:07 p.m. by President JoAnn Needham. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Margaret Krajca. A moment of silence was held in memory of Joe Ben Macalik. On the sick list were David Keever and Adell Rejcek. Secretary Pat Fowler read the minutes of the February meeting. Betty Macalik gave the financial and treasury reports. Vice President Laure Krajca gave the bar report which included sales, expenses, and inventory on hand. Youth Leader Rita Holland reported that the youth met on Sunday, March 3. They had a short meeting with pizza, snacks, and ice cream, and they made bead crafts. She also welcomed two new members to the youth club - Jacob and Justin Mraz. Jacob and Justin were
members in the past. But, they were unable to attend the youth activities for a few years while they were pursuing other interests. Welcome back, Jacob and Justin! The next youth activity will be an after-Easter egg hunt on Sunday, April 8. Lodge 84, Dallas youth will be joining us.
Successful Fundraiser Under old business, a final report was given on the very successful, annual fundraiser. Ticket and raffle sales, donations, the crowd in attendance, and the money raised exceeded all expectations. Thank you! Under new business, there was mention of the deteriorated condition of the parking lot. This was especially noticeable after 10 days of constant rain which coincided with two major functions at our facility. Everyone was in agreement that we are long overdue in the need of making major repairs to the lot. After much discussion, a budget was set and the members voted to move forward with this project. With no other business to discuss, birthdays and anniversaries were announced. The meeting adjourned, and social hour began with 21 members present. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Ronnie Dlabaj during the social.

Lodge 154, Fort Worth to host District Three Spring Meeting
On Sunday, March 4, 2018, Lodge 154, Fort Worth held a combined meeting with Lodge 154, Fort Worth Youth Club. Both adult lodge and youth club members recited the Pledge of Allegiance to begin the meeting. Basic lodge issues were discussed including the upcoming District Three Spring Meeting that we will be hosting on Sunday, April 22. There are several opportunities for members to help prepare, setup, and clean up the lodge for the meeting. Mary Steinman is preparing a list of specific jobs and will send it to members soon for signup. Jerry Milan reported that the roof still needs to be repaired on the pump house, and he hoped it would be complete before the next meeting. Other upcoming events were discussed, mainly the SPJST Car Show on
Saturday, May 5. Many members have never attended and showed an interest in going this year, possibly together as a group. Youth club member Angel Pace made motion that the youth club donate $200 towards the “Backing the Blob” fundraiser for Camp Kubena. Holly Jones seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously. The adult lodge voted to match the youth club’s donation. Next, activities for Join Hands Day were suggested. CarrieAnn Jones is checking with her church to see if we can work with one of their small groups
on a service project. All members signed greeting cards for two of our Youth Club members who are now in college. Jerry Milan adjourned the meeting. Lesli Milan Treasurer/Youth Leader —SPJST—

The monthly meeting was brought to order by President Nancy Kelly on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at the Burleson Police Department Community Room and the Pledge of Alliance immediately followed by Logan Almonte. We are so proud of Logan for always leading us in the pledge. We were honored and pleased to have Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek and State Fraternal Director Frank Horak. Frank has just recently taken on the latter position, so his plate is now very full. It is always a pleasure to have visitors join with us for our meetings. In addition, we had Pat and Robert Sill visit with us again. It is always a treat to see their smiles. All officers were present for the meeting, and Secretary Carmon Babina read the minutes from the previous meeting. Treasurer Rhonda Hurtik presented the financial report. Both reports were accepted by lodge members. The plans for the bowling excursion have been temporarily put on hold as other matters came up and needed attention. Discussion was brought forth for the SPJST Car Show that will take place

in May. At the present time, we have six people that are very interested in attending this event and are very much looking forward to seeing all of the beautiful cars. I know that I would love to see a candy apple red 1937 Ford or Chevy. That would really tickle my fancy! To help with endorsing the SPJST Car Show, a check in the amount of $500 was presented to Brian Vanicek and Frank Horak. They were very surprised to receive that check and said that as far as they knew it was the first one to come in to help with support for the event. Also, a check in the amount of $50 was given to Sandy Almonte for referral of a new member. I had the privilege to enroll Sandy into an insurance program about four months ago, and prior to that enrollment, it was stated that if someone referred a person to become a new member and enroll in our insurance offering, they would receive a $50 referral fee after a three-month period. Sandy has definitely qualified as she has been helping with all activities that we have been engaged in. We said that she received the check because she had referred herself. We discussed considering a new donation for an organization that helps Veterans and also will help with the pet population. Dogs (or cats, sometimes) are retrieved from the pounds and trained to assist veterans in their needs to be able to cope with their given situation, whatever that might be. This is an avenue to assist our Veterans and at the same time to be able to rescue animals. This is considered a dual fold task. Also, in looking forward to the “helping hands” opportunity to be able to reach out to others, we have chosen a

I know that some of the residents do not have anyone to come, visit, and say hello, and they spend many long hours in a chair or bed. We consider this to definitely be a reach out of a helping hand and are hoping to be able to brighten their day. Shortly before the close of the meeting, Brian and Frank brought forth good greetings telling us that they were very proud of our lodge and all of our achievements. They wished us continued success. Also, we were offered help in any manner if needed. Our drawings took place with the drawing for the monthly donation to be given to St. Jude’s and the restaurant

The recipients for the door prizes were Red Kelly and Dena Bowden for gift cards. Recipients of blankets were Leon Flueshe, Logan Almonte, and Dena Bowden. The umbrella winners were Red Kelly, Carmon Babina, and Robert Sill. Also, Brian said that each time he saw a bowling ball or anything to do with bowling, he thought of Red Kelly. Brian presented Red with a pair of socks that have a lot of pins and strikes on them. At the conclusion of the meeting, we all adjourned to Applebee’s for a delicious dinner of our choosing. Following dinner, a birthday cake was served to honor our March babies. We have three birthday recipients to honor this month, and they are Anne Sannet, Joe Babina, and Logan Almonte. Anne was not able to make it so we greatly missed her. We were able to share the occasion with these folks by enjoying their cakes which were an Italian cream cake and a German chocolate cake. March birthday greetings go out to all Lodge 180 members, and they are Penny Bryant, William Slavik, William Tankersley, Jonathan Nitsche, Mitchell Kucera Jr., Steven Hurtik, Jan Cox, Freddie Karlicek, Jr., Ann Sammet, Dylan Bowden, and Joe Babina. We wish each of you many more in your future.
Remember that we would like to see you, a fellow member, come out to our next meeting which will be Tuesday, April 3 at the Burleson Police Department on Wilshire held in the community room at 6:15 p.m. Following the meeting, we will adjourn to El Fenix for a delicious Mexican dinner. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, almost everyone was in red, and the 39plus attending had a “sweet” time. There were gifts of valentine cards, candy, and the selection of our Sweetheart for the day. We chose to honor President Cathy Simmank. She spares nothing to make sure we enjoy ourselves each month. President Cathy Simmank opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and welcomed our visitor and newest member Virginia Abendschan. Janet Basham’s inspirational comments included the life, personality, and humor of Abraham Lincoln. Secretary Joan read the minutes which were approved and a thank you letter from Heather’s Ole Skool thanking us for our recent donation and support.
The financial report was presented by Margaret Laymance, and Marlene Bass gave the sunshine report. In March, we will celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day by pretending to be Irish and the wearing of the green. We will also have Ray Terrell, a friend of Sandi Celusniak coming to lead us in a singalong. All are welcome and encouraged to warm up your vocal chords. Birthday girls in February were celebrated—Shirley Martin and Pauline Morbitzer. The rest were missing in action. A belated happy birthday and wishes for another grand year are sent to Claire Rooney, Linda Palmer, Brenda Lackey, Ray Terrill, and Bobby Shropshire. Lucy Martinez brought a large valentine gift basket to auction off after lunch. Those baskets are our way of putting a little cash into our kitty. Bessie Ellsworth was the lucky winner. There were 17 door prizes given away, after which show-and-tell took place. The blessing for lunch was given, and hostesses Evelyn Scaff and Lucy Martinez set a wonderful table. There was something from every item on the food chart. Good stuff! I know I have probably forgotten something important, but I hope not. The Lenten season is upon us and remains to be a time for reflection and contemplation. Let’s always be thankful for what we have and share the love of our Savior in life’s journey. On Wednesday, February 21, 2018, John Bryce Hejl received his final wish - to join his wife LaVerne Heine Hejl in heaven. They were married for 56 years. We know that this was a very happy reunion for both of them. John was born John Hejl in Temple, Texas on March 12, 1923 to John B. Hejl and Lillie Kopecky Hejl. When John was very young, the family moved to Austin. Here John grew up enjoying a childhood any boy would love including hunting and fishing. They first lived in Hyde Park then moved to Shoalmont Drive in 1936 when this was still outside of the city limits at 45th Street. John went to Baker Elementary, University Junior High, and went on to graduate from Austin High School. John enlisted in the United States Navy on September 16, 1942. He signed up for the Submarine Service and was sent to New London, Connecticut, for training. He was assigned to the SS Moray and sent to the Pacific where he remained for the duration of the war. He was a proud member of SPJST Lodge 155, Austin. He was also a mem-
ber of Submarine Veterans of World War II, Central Texas Chapter - of which he was the last surviving member. John had several jobs - the longest being at the Texas Highway Department then the University of Texas where he worked in the refrigeration department until his retirement in 1988. With retirement, John found time to do many things he loved - metal detecting, repairing and building just about anything, and going out to his place in the country. He also enjoyed building a greenhouse for his wife, tilling her garden, playing with his grandkids, and enjoying his evening Dos Equis or margarita. John is predeceased in death by his parents; an infant brother; wife LaVerne; ex-wife Barbara Breakey Greenwell; two nephews; and one niece. He is survived by children John Hejl, Bill Hejl, Janet Hejl Williams (Quinner), and Diane Hejl; grandchildren Rebecca Hejl Dunmire (Zach), Bonnie Hejl, Natalie Hejl, Lillie Hejl Cameron (Doug), Christina Williams and Celeste Williams; great-grandchildren Marcus Hejl, Camille Dunmire, Conrad Dunmire, Lucia Cameron and Dakota Cameron; brother Robert Hejl; sisters Josephine Hejl Legg, Marianna Hejl Wood; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 28 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, Austin. Graveside service was at 11 a.m. on March 1 at Austin Memorial Park. Memorial contributions can be made to the charity of your choice. —SPJST—

Resolution of Sympathy
We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 17, Novy Tabor, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our department lodge brother, WILLIE J. MATEJKA. Brother Matejka passed away on Friday, August 11, 2017, in Bryan, Texas, at the age of 64. Funeral service was at CallawayJones Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 15, 2017, and interment followed in the College Station Memorial Cemetery. Officiant at the service was Reverend Willie Matejka Monsignor John McCaffery. Brother Matejka was born to Willie James and Winnie (Nemec) Matejka in Bryan on December 30, 1952. He was a true gift of friendship to all he met. His family collectively speaks of his high regards of integrity and unconditional love for all. He had no enemies in life. He was a man who had many talents, and he unselfishly shared those with anyone needing help with all kinds of projects. Willie was known for his self-initiation of completing a project even before he was asked to help; that’s just the way he was described by his family. His family and friends will definitely miss his kindness and love. He was a man who enjoyed the great outdoors while fishing and hunting. His indoor recreational activities included bowling, up to a few months ago, and he was always ready for a trip to a casino. He was a man of quiet faith as a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his son Danny Matejka; parents Willie and Winnie; brother Charles; and brother-in-law Curtis Eugene Lusk. His survivors include daughter Amie and husband Carlton; the mother of his children Shirley; sisters Charlene Lusk, Mae Fazzino and husband Joe, Gladys Beasley and husband Larry; brother Frank and wife Dana; sister-in-law Sue Matejka; three adored grandchildren Amber, Jessica, and Colton; great-grandchildren Michael, Anthony, and Mia; nephews and nieces; and extended family and friends whom he loved. May our departed brother rest in eternal peace. Resolution Committee Susan Skrabanek Betty Suehs —SPJST—

District Two gather for workshop, pizza party, skating social Dear Vestnik Readers, The Sunday afternoon of February 18, 2018, was busy for our District Two youth. Members, leaders, parents, and
friends met at 2 p.m. for the youth development workshop. There was even some time to get in a little beseda practice. We were very pleased to have 35
youth and 16 adults and guests attending. Thank you to our great Leaders-inTraining (LITs) who kept the youth moving with games they had learned during their many years of camp. “Ships and Sailors” was the overall best game!

able after this session. Hopefully, everyone did learn something which will help them throughout the year. Amber gave some great ideas on the 2018 Youth Achievement Day (YAD) constructed items craft category, which is paper projects. Everyone had fun making creations out of paper. Cristy had a great craft for all - slime making! Everyone enjoyed touching and feeling the mixture. Everyone had a great time with the activities. So YAD judges will need to look out for all the neat and creative items at District Two YAD this year! The afternoon continued with pizza and door prizes before heading to Wheels Family Skating for a fun time of skating. What a super turnout . . . more
than double from last year! We had 91 total in attendance . . . such an awesome evening! Thank you members, leaders, parents, and friends for attending. Thank you to Lodges 20, Granger; 29, Taylor; 47, Seaton; 48, Beyersville; 80, Holland; and 182, Falls County! We missed those of you who could not attend. Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth attends hockey game
Dear Vestnik, For the District Seven outing, we traveled to the AT&T Center in San Antonio to watch a Rampage Hockey game. Personally, it was my first time watching a hockey game, and I have to say, I had a blast! I was skeptical at first about whether or not I would be interested in hockey, but I quickly warmed up to the sport as I watched the players smoothly skate across the ice. I was enticed by the way the rules of the games seemed so strange to my soccer-enthusiast-self. More importantly than the game, however, was the time I was able to spend with friends I don’t get to see as often as I would like to. Fraternally, Kelly House, age 16 —SPJST—

ways to color wooden eggs. Acrylic paints are readily available and safe for users of any age. Wood stains or wood markers also can be used to give the eggs a natural finish. Others may want to rip small pieces of decorative paper to create a decoupage effect on their wooden eggs.
Sew soft eggs Those who are handy with a needle and thread can explore patterns for making soft, stuffed eggs. Cozy fleece or other fabrics can be sewn together to make the general egg shape. Then the egg is filled with polyester filling, feathers or another soft material. Ribbons, buttons, trims, and other decorative touches can personalize the eggs and
add a touch of whimsy. Check out www.sew4home.com for their ideas on handmade Easter eggs.
Modeling clay Children who love to get their hands dirty may enjoy making Easter eggs out of modeling materials. Colors can be blended together to create a marbleized effect. Depending on the clay medium, the eggs may air-harden or may need to be heated at a low temperature in the oven to fully cure. Easter eggs are a fun tradition that adds to the festivity of spring. While traditional eggs can be used, many different, more long-lasting materials can be used as well. (MS) —SPJST—

President našeho řádu Freddie Kaluža zahájil schůzi, složili jsme přísahu americké vlajce a republice, pro kterou stojí, uctili jsme památku zemřelých členů a členek: Lillian M. Mynář, Kenneth P. Taylor, Agnes Dujka, Eugene Horák, Jimmy Polanský, Shirley Polanský chvilkou uctivého ticha. Vyslovujeme upřímnou soustrast pozůstalé rodině a přátelům a zesnulých lehké odpočinutí. Linda Kaluža jako koordinátorka bratrských akcií poukázala na zajímavé události v Texasu a upozornila člen stvo, aby sledovalo seznam a uveřejnění různých akci jednoty po celém Texasu. Naše finanční tajemnice Mary Lou Mynář si užívala návštěvy své rodiny a tak nebyla přítomna. Její zpráva byla natištěna a předána členctvu k nahlédnutí. Hlavním bodem jednání bylo zhodnocení naší vánoční besídky a schválení finanční podpory, kterou jsme věnovali tomuto podniku. Všeobecně řečeno vánoční besídka proběhla v pěkném přátelském a rodinném ovzduší, návštěvníci byli spokojeni po všech stránkách a mnozí obdrželi i pěkný dárek anebo částku v hotovosti.

Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center shares spring events
Fayette County was selected as the site for the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC) because of its significance in the history of Texas Czechs. Fayette County has the largest Czech population per capita and the most Czech communities of any county in the state. Many Czech-related historical sites and events, as well as prominent Texas Czechs, can be linked to Fayette County, which has the distinc-
Czech Heritage Museum artifacts featured at Bell County Museum
The Bell County Museum in Belton recently opened a new exhibit, “Forgotten Gateway: Coming to America through Galveston Island,” which features artifacts from the Czech Heritage Museum. The exhibit of text and image panels was first designed for the Bob Bullock State History Museum in Austin. Bell County Museum curator added artifacts borrowed from the Czech Heritage Museum & Genealogy Center in Temple and from the Rosenberg Library in Galveston. “We were very excited to borrow artifacts from the Czech Heritage Museum for the exhibit, “Forgotten Gateway,” said Bell County Museum Curator Mikaela Young. “The objects enhanced the information included in the traveling exhibition and allowed us to highlight Czech immigrants that arrived in Texas through the Port of Galve-

ston and settled across the state, including here in Bell County.” The loaned artifacts include a 1922 Josef Hlavacek Heilgonka Accordion, adorned with the familiar and beautiful Czech sentiment “What the heart joins, even the ocean cannot divide,” in Czech. Also on display are the travel documents of a young couple, Stepan and Anna Gavenda and their baby daughter, Anna and their trip from Bremen, Germany to Galveston, Texas. The documents tell the story that Stepan came to the U.S. alone on April 24, 1913, on the ship Cassel. Anna and the baby came October 30, 1913 on the Breslau. tion of having had more immigrants from the Czech lands of the AustroHungarian Empire settle in the second half of the nineteenth century than any other county in Texas. On March 24, 1997, TCHCC was officially incorporated. Then Texas Governor George Bush signed the resolution from the Texas House of Representatives and Senate in July 1997. The resolution recognized all those associated and that the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center be built in La Grange. The resolution further recognized the contributions of Texans of Czech ethnicity to the state’s history and that Fayette County, which is known as the “Cradle of Czech Immigration,” is an appropriate site for the center. The TCHCC Complex is located adjacent to the Fayette County Fairgrounds on US Hwy 77 just North of La Grange. The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center consists of museums, banquet hall, library, gift shop, a re-created immigrant village, and an amphitheater. TCHCC is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of artifacts, language, and culture of the Texas Czechs. TCHCC will be celebrating Slavnost ‘May Fest’ on the third Sunday of May. The weekend events begin on Saturday, May 19. It’s another great night under the stars! On Saturday evening, The Stand-In (Záskok) will be performed from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sanford Schmid Amphitheater in the TCHCC Complex. Záskok, written by Ladislav Smoljak and Zdeněk Svěrák, premiered in the Czech Republic in March 1994. It is a comedy set in 1910 about a small troupe of actors who find themselves short of company members. To allow the show to go on, they call in the famous Czech actor Karel Infeld Prachensky to perform one of the parts. However, the show becomes disastrous when the famous actor forgets his lines, causing

chaos to ensue. The beginning of the play sets up the belief that Jara Cimrman, a fictional Czech personality, wrote the play being watched. “It is a real honor to take this beloved piece and to shepherd it onto the international stage.” – Brian Caspe, Actor in the Cimrman English Theatre. With the first visit to the United States, The Stand-In was performed at distinguished establishments such as the Bohemian National Hall in New York City on April 19 and 22, 2017, and later at the Czech Embassy in Washington, D.C. This truly will be a wonderful evening overlooking the Colorado River Valley. The annual Slavnost ‘May Fest’ and Tribute to the Immigrants to Texas will be held on Sunday, May 20. The day will begin with music in the Koliba Foyer at 9 a.m. along with Svačina. The Tribute to the Immigrants to Texas ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. The ceremony recognizes the families whose Czech ancestors immigrated to Texas. A delicious fried chicken dinner with all the trimmings will be served in the Hanslik Hall beginning at 11:30 a.m. Plenty of Czech style desserts will also be available along with refreshing beverages of all kinds. Music on the deck of the TCHCC from 12 to 6:30 p.m. The Travelers Orchestra of Columbus, Texas, will begin at 12 noon. At 3:30 p.m., there will be a special performance by the Eva Adam’s Czech Ensemble from the Czech Republic, celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Czechoslovakia. A dance floor has been added for all our dancing patrons. The Czech Village and Museums will be open for touring, a hay ride, prize drawing, May pole dance, door prizes, country store, pastry shop, and much more. Item donations for the country store and pastry shop are welcomed. Help with genealogy research will be available in the Melnar Library and the TCHCC Kopecky Gift Shop has a new stock of
