e all want to find happiness in life. No matter what our situation is, the search for true contentment is at the heart of our goals. Here’s a heartwarming story, author unknown, about happiness. A group of 50 people were attending a program. During the presentation, the speaker suddenly had an idea. He stopped the program and announced, “Let’s have a fun group activity that will give you a lesson about the real purpose of our lives.” Next, the speaker handed a balloon to each person in the conference room. He instructed them to write their names with a marker on the balloons they had. “After all of you are done writing your names on the balloon, please drop the balloon in the basket being passed around,” the speaker informed them. When the group finished writing their names and collecting the balloons, the speaker took the basket of balloons and went to another room. The speaker came back and gave further instructions to the group. “Now, all of you are required to go into the room and find the balloon with your name on it. And remember, you only have five minutes to do so. All the best to all of you!” And so, thinking they had only five minutes, the entire group rushed out. In a hurry to find the balloons with their names on it, they pushed and shoved each other. But in the end, they could not find the balloon with their names. “Now,” the speaker announced after five minutes had elapsed. “I will give you another task,” he said, asking them to randomly pick out any bal-

loon. “Now, this is what you’re going to do. After randomly picking out a balloon, give it to the person whose name is written on the balloon.” When the group did as they were asked to, they realized that they received the balloon with their names faster than before. It has become extremely easy to find the balloon with their names on it. Then finally the speaker divulged the lesson he was trying to teach the group. “You see,” said the speaker, “we do the same with our lives. All of us are frantically searching for happiness in our lives. We search every nook and cranny and still nothing. We push each other, we shove each other, and often hurt others in the process of searching for our happiness. What we fail to realize is that our happiness not only depends on us, but also with the happiness we give others. So if you want to be happy, give others their happiness, and you’ll find yours.”

Babicka's Walnut Cake

This cake can be made with a variety of glazes and/or fillings which you can adjust according to the occasion. 4 eggs 3/4 cup white sugar plus 2 Tablespoons white sugar 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 3 Tablespoons all-purpose flour 5 Tablespoons ground walnuts 1 teaspoon baking powder Cream Filling 1 cup butter 1/2 cup white sugar, or to taste 1 egg yolk 2 Tablespoons cocoa powder, or more to taste Preheat oven to 320 degrees F. Grease a 9-inch square baking dish. Beat eggs and 3/4 cup plus 2 Tablespoons sugar in a large bowl using an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment until smooth. Carefully add 1/2 cup plus 3 Tablespoons flour, ground walnuts, and baking powder; mix batter thoroughly until there are no lumps. Pour batter into baking dish.

Bake cake in preheated oven until barely set, about 5 minutes. Increase oven temperature to 375 degrees F; bake until golden, 25 to 30 minutes. Let cool for a few minutes in the baking dish before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely, about 45 minutes. Beat butter, 1/2 cup white sugar, and egg yolk together in a bowl with the electric mixer until creamy and smooth. Add cocoa powder to cream filling and mix to combine. Cut the cooled cake carefully in half horizontally. Place one layer on a serving plate and spread half of the cream filling on it. Top with the second layer. Scoop the rest of the filling onto the cake and smooth evenly over the top, letting excess filling drip down the sides. https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/245490/babickaswalnut-cake/?internalSource=hub%20recipe&referringId=713&referringContentType=recipe%20hub

Lodge 196, Houston-West hosts Annual Easter Egg Hunt

Saturday, March 24, 2018 • Lodge 196, Houston-West Hall • Submitted by Don Fruin, Event Coordinator

Lodge 196, Houston-West held its annual Easter egg hunt on Saturday, March 24, 2018, at the lodge hall. We had the largest attendance to date with more than 100 people enjoying the food and fun. Attendees enjoyed lots of Easter-themed coloring pages, and the “graffiti wall” banner was a big hit.

Of course, the Easter Bunny made his appearance to welcome everyone and pose for many pictures. The hunt for the eggs did not last long as the children swept the eggs up in record time. They also had lots of fun looking for the “special” eggs that contained the ticket that allowed the youth to claim one of the

jumbo eggs that were packed with lots of great items for their enjoyment. Kids of all ages had a good time, and we are looking forward to having even more fun next year at Lodge 196, Houston-West! —SPJST—

Brother John’s earliest interest in genealogy began in 1999 when he was asked to present two programs on “The History of the Czech-Moravian Brethren: From the Czech Lands to Texas” at a Czech Heritage Society conference in Bryan. He was a member of the group of 10 who founded Texas Czech Genealogical Society in 2001. He was named chaplain at that meeting, and he continues to hold that position. and the genealogists’ quill pen and ink bottle. When TCGS began work on its’ first series of books, Czech Family Histories, Volumes I and II, Brother John worked many long hours writing articles, advising, and editing. He continues to serve the society by writing articles and proofreading when called upon. He has been a loyal worker at our booth at the SPJST Car Show in Temple for many years and has volunteered at other events around the state, doing whatever needs to be done. His extensive interest in the Czechs living in Lee County, Texas, led him to complete extensive research on the subject, compiled over a number of years, and resulting in his writing Lee County Czechs. After doing all the research and work on the book, he gladly turned his work over to TCGS for publication. The book was published in December 2010, and it won a third place award from Texas State Genealogical Society at its yearly convention. When the Czech Veterans’ Wall of Honor and Military Museum were being constructed, Brother John was instrumental in designing the overall layout. Felt colors, wording, lettering, and flag placement, along with selected large photos were his ideas. He spent tireless hours and drove countless miles securing the innumerable bolts of felt and letters needed to accomplish his vision, working tirelessly until the project was completed. Brother John’s knowledge of Czech history and customs, his love of the culture, and his continuous support of Texas Czechs and their communities, has contributed immensely to the growth and success of Texas Czech Genealogical Society. It is therefore fitting that Reverend John Rushing Gantt, Jr. be named our 2018 recipient of the Texans of Czech Ancestry Award. Nancy Machu Lodge 29, Taylor —SPJST—
