The 13th Annual SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration is Saturday, May 5 at Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. This year’s event will include vendor booths offering various items like kolaches from Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club. Pictured above, Assistant Youth Leader Vicki Sims, left, and Youth Leader Lynda Novak display delicious, homemade kolaches at the 2017 car show. Smile! We’re SPJST!

On the cool, wet, and windy morning of Saturday, April 14, Lodge 81, Needville hosted the SPJST Float in the Needville Youth Fair Parade. Pictured with the smiling emojis are, left to right, Cody Sandage, Kayla Weighat, Lodge 81 Youth Leader Madeline Gadway, and Lodge 81 youth members Baley Stavinoha and Maxx Stavinoha.

Wild Art

These beautiful poppy paintings are the work of Henrietta Milan of Lodge 154, Fort Worth. Although she usually works in much larger sizes, she generously donated these smaller canvases for the Czech Heritage Museum gift shop. Call the museum at 254-899-2935 if you are interested in purchasing one of these paintings. Poppies are always a Czech favorite, but the current commemoration of the World War I centennial makes them especially sentimental.

Justin Kraatz of Lodge 47, Seaton graduated from U.S. Army Basic Combat Training on Friday, April 5, 2018, at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He is pictured with his proud parents Joyce and Brad Kraatz, both of Lodge 47, Seaton.

e are getting ready for the car show on Saturday, May 5 at Seaton Star Hall. We are looking forward to many vehicles and a day full of family fun for all ages - music, shopping, learning about Czech heritage, kids’ activities, and lots more. See page 4 for more information. And, we will be giving away the 1966 Ford Mustang at the conclusion of the show. Need a ticket? Don’t delay - call 254-773-1575 today! Add Vanilla to Sauerkraut? NO! Thanks to all who contacted us regarding the recipe that appeared on page 3 of last week’s Věstník. The preparation instructions for a cake were inadvertently included with the ingredient list for pork casserole. Needless to say, it wasn’t a good combination! We apologize for the error. The pork casserole recipe appears on page 3.

Corpus Christi Getaway Weekend Returns in 2018 The Corpus Christi Getaway Weekend will be held in 2018. The Supreme Lodge revisited the event at the meeting last week and approved for it to be held the weekend of Friday, August 10 to Sunday, August 12. Save the date, and watch for more details soon.

This Week’s Funny A weasel walks into an SPJST lodge hall. The bartender looks up and says, “Wow! In all my years tending bar here at the SPJST lodge, I’ve never had a weasel stop by. What can I get you?” “Pop,” goes the weasel.

Come One, Come All to the May 19th SPJST Founders Day Celebration in Fayetteville

SPJST Founders Day Save the Date: Saturday, May 19, 2018 SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville

SPJST presents its first-ever Founders Day Celebration on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville, and the public is cordially invited to attend. “It’s an opportunity to look back and pay tribute to our founders,” says SPJST President Brian Vanicek. “It’s also a chance to get together and have a good time!” The day-long celebration starts with a catered turkey and dressing dinner starting at 11 a.m. and will include lots of wonderful music, dancing, cornhole tournament, and a huge 25-prize drawing sponsored by the lodge. Featured performers include Chris Rybak, The Round Top Brass Band, and Glen Collins and the Alibis. Some very special guest visitors from the Czech Republic are also expected to be in attendance! Later that evening, SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville hosts the Founders Day Dance beginning at 7 p.m. Please see the Founders Day advertisement for complete details! The 2018 Founders Day is a pilot project of The SPJST Foundation. The Foundation was established as an independent 501(c)3 non-profit corporation by SPJST in 2012 to support endeavors of significant merit and in line with the Foundation’s objectives. “I would love to see the Founders Day concept take root and become a muchanticipated annual event celebrated at a different lodge or locale each year with the proceeds going to benefit the host lodge or lodges,” says President Vanicek. The SPJST Foundation is

working with the members of Lodge 1, Fayetteville in hosting this first event for the simple reason that the city of Fayetteville was the home base of SPJST’s operations from 1897 through 1953. Many SPJST members have never had the chance to explore and experience the history and charm of Fayetteville. This inaugural event provides that opportunity! Attendees may very well want to make this a Founders Day Weekend! The entire city of Fayetteville is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Here’s a fun fact: The 345 historic structures in town outnumber local citizens! This is a town that is proud of its history and its culture. On a related note, the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC) in nearby La Grange will be hosting its annual Slavnost celebration the next day. The old SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad hall — which is in the process of being restored — is located on the grounds of the TCHCC. For details on that event, please see www.czechtexas.com

About the Fayetteville Meeting Hall History resonates within the walls of the SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville meeting hall in Fayetteville, Texas. The celebrated building received a Texas historical marker in 2013 and remains virtually unchanged since it was built in 1910. For more than a century, the wood-frame building has been the gathering place for dances, community

events, wedding receptions, and other family celebrations. The hall was home for the renowned Baca Family Band and at one time served as a gymnasium for the Fayetteville High School boys basketball team. Fair and livestock shows, baseball games, and fundraisers of all kinds contribute to the property’s storied past. We will never know all of the stories, experiences, and characters whose histories are linked to the Fayetteville meeting hall; however, we do know that time has taken its toll on the structure. Proceeds raised from the event sponsors will help to ensure that the historic lodge hall remains in good condition for present and future gen-

Lodge 18, Elgin to assist with community benefit

The winter months have been cold and wet in some areas and dry in others. The fields are getting green gardens being planted. Everyone is hoping for a good yield. We at SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin are hoping for good attendance at the dances. What will happen if the bands stop coming to play? Dancing is the best form of exercise, and you don’t feel like you are working out - you are having fun. It is great to see some of these older couples in their 80s and a few in their 90s on the dance floor. Come and see what fun it is to visit Lodge 18 and listen to good music. Who knows! You just might get on the dance floor and get a little exercise! The officers at Lodge 18 are trying to help the Elgin community. During Western Days, when the classes of Elgin High are having reunions, the lodge has provided the hall. Well, this year we have booked a band for listening and dancing if they so desire. It’s great when you can get your class together and not have to look for a place to meet. We are happy to provide the hall. (See details following this letter.) We helped with a fundraiser for the Ruthven children a few years ago. Cody and Kayla were diagnosed with a genetic

9

condition called Niemann-Pick Type C. The family has been dealt another blow. Scott Ruthven, the father, woke up in the middle of the night with a severe headache. When he tried to get out of bed, he wasn’t able to walk. His wife Dena called 911. At the hospital, they found he had suffered a hemorrhagic stroke and had a large amount of blood in his brain. Before the pressure was relieved from the brain, Scott suffered a large ischemic stroke. Since Dena is a stay-at-home mom caring for the children and Scott, the family is in need of assistance. We are helping by letting the family use the hall for a fundraiser on Sunday, July 29. We hope to have a large turn-out. We think we have problems until we hear of

something like this. How blessed most of us are! I have many pictures of the dances we have had. I hope to have some copies made to share in the Věstník. We are hoping that we can continue to have these great dances as we are hearing that some halls are closing. We need your support! We had no birthdays. We did wish Charles and Deliliah Wilson a happy 36th anniversary. The first step is you have to say that you can. ~ Will Smith Irene Vrabel Reporter —SPJST—

nated to St. Thomas Food Bank, and all were thanked. President Barbara stated our white elephant sale would be held in May, and all proceeds will go to the Club. All items will have a sheet with a minimum dollar amount to be filled in by the donor and lines for any others to make their increased bids. When bidding is closed, the highest bidder will purchase that item. It was reported our longtime member Agnes Reznicek-Owen who has been on the membership homebound list, died on Wednesday, April 3 at the age of 104 years. Her funeral service and rosary were held at St. Thomas Church on Friday, April 6. Aunt Aggie, as lots of us called her, was an aunt to Anna Marie Moncrief. I still recall her giving me homemade noodles, kolaches, and homemade pear preserves. She was an excellent cook and so loved coming to the Friendship Club. The last few years she was a resident at Heartland Health Care Center, and Anna Marie always made sure she had a party with a birthday cake starting with 100 years to which a lot of us were always invited to. Our sympathy goes out to Anna Marie, Aggie’s son Ted, and families. Aunt Aggie, may your soul rest in peace - we miss you! Rose Ann Spann was missed as she is still recovering from knee surgery, and her husband is also having some medical problems. Get well wishes go out to both of them. Betty and Stanley Krenek were also missed as Betty had some surgery, but we hear she is doing fine. Libbie reported on a call from Lois Smith who has missed coming to our meetings. She said she hopes to be able to come next month. Her nephew in Oklahoma passed away, and she was going to his funeral. This nephew is four years younger than Lois. Our sympathy goes out to you. Sunshine Person Darlene Tompkins reported she sent a get well card to Rose Ann and a thinking of you card to Lorraine Cross. It was nice to have Lorraine back at our meeting as she has been missed. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to April celebrants Lydia Alholm, Marie Keller, Rose Ann Spann, Kathy Thome, and Patti Williams. May you all have many more. We had three door prizes donated by Darlene Tompkins and two donated by Jo Ann Wilcox. Happy winners were Mary Agnes Ward, Helen Skrasek, and Shirley Martin. Adele Strand was the first winner of the 50-50 dollar game with Pat McWilliams being the second winner. Congratulations to all of you! April hostesses Joyce Helgeson and Kathy Thome were thanked for their excellent service, and Claire Keighley was thanked for picking up the chicken. Lola

Taylor was also thanked for all the spring flower decorations on all the tables. Hostesses for May will be Debbie Skrasek and Libbie Vrla with Claire Keighley picking up the chicken. A big thank you goes to our telephone committee - Elizabeth Creamer, Lorraine Cross, and Helen Skrasek - for the excellent job they do each month to remind all members of our meetings, events that will take place at the meetings, theme for the day, and to inform all of any deaths among our members. Your calls are very much appreciated. Following the presentation from Mary G. of the Water Department and the close of our meeting, grace was said and a great lunch of fried chicken and other wonderful side dishes were enjoyed with our speaker Mary G. and birthday members being the first in line for lunch. Games were then played, and a good time was had by all. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, May 2. Don’t forget to bring your dish for lunch and items for the white elephant sale. See you then.

Other News Lydia Alholm enjoyed the recent visit from daughter-in-law Kathy Alholm, grandson Tim, and his fiancée from the Chicago area. They came to introduce Lydia to Tim’s fiancée as they were later married on April 8. Lydia wasn’t able to attend the wedding, but has heard that it was a beautiful ceremony and reception. This was the third grandson, born to Lydia’s son Anthony and Kathy. Anthony attended Notre Dame and wife Kathy attended a Catholic university across the street. Following, Anthony went into law practice in Chicago, and they made their home in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, outside of Chicago. The first grandson Matt and his family continue to live in the Chicago area, while grandson number two - Danny - and his family recently moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where Danny will practice law. Lydia is very proud of her family and is looking forward to seeing all the wedding photos. Members Anna Marie Moncrief, Margaret Sears, Kathy Thome, Sharron Connelly, and Libbie Vrla enjoyed attending the 33rd Annual Divine Affair at the Fort Worth Club in support of the Discalced Carmelite Nuns of the Most Holy Trinity recently. It was a wonderful luncheon with beautiful entertainment by Vocalist Jeannie Miller and Anna Marie’s friend Georgeanna Repal of Houston who came for Aunt Aggie’s funeral, winning five of the raffle prizes. Congratulations, Georgeanna! It was nice to see you again. So Until, Keep Smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—
