Come One, Come All to the May 19th SPJST Founders Day Celebration in Fayetteville
SPJST Founders Day Save the Date: Saturday, May 19, 2018 SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville
SPJST presents its first-ever Founders Day Celebration on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville, and the public is cordially invited to attend. “It’s an opportunity to look back and pay tribute to our founders,” says SPJST President Brian Vanicek. “It’s also a chance to get together and have a good time!” The day-long celebration starts with a catered turkey and dressing dinner starting at 11 a.m. and will include lots of wonderful music, dancing, cornhole tournament, and a huge 25-prize drawing sponsored by the lodge. Featured performers include Chris Rybak, The Round Top Brass Band, and Glen Collins and the Alibis. Some very special guest visitors from the Czech Republic are also expected to be in attendance! Later that evening, SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville hosts the Founders Day Dance beginning at 7 p.m. Please see the Founders Day advertisement for complete details! The 2018 Founders Day is a pilot project of The SPJST Foundation. The Foundation was established as an independent 501(c)3 non-profit corporation by SPJST in 2012 to support endeavors of significant merit and in line with the Foundation’s objectives. “I would love to see the Founders Day concept take root and become a muchanticipated annual event celebrated at a different lodge or locale each year with the proceeds going to benefit the host lodge or lodges,” says President Vanicek. The SPJST Foundation is
working with the members of Lodge 1, Fayetteville in hosting this first event for the simple reason that the city of Fayetteville was the home base of SPJST’s operations from 1897 through 1953. Many SPJST members have never had the chance to explore and experience the history and charm of Fayetteville. This inaugural event provides that opportunity! Attendees may very well want to make this a Founders Day Weekend! The entire city of Fayetteville is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Here’s a fun fact: The 345 historic structures in town outnumber local citizens! This is a town that is proud of its history and its culture. On a related note, the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC) in nearby La Grange will be hosting its annual Slavnost celebration the next day. The old SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad hall — which is in the process of being restored — is located on the grounds of the TCHCC. For details on that event, please see www.czechtexas.com
About the Fayetteville Meeting Hall History resonates within the walls of the SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville meeting hall in Fayetteville, Texas. The celebrated building received a Texas historical marker in 2013 and remains virtually unchanged since it was built in 1910. For more than a century, the wood-frame building has been the gathering place for dances, community
events, wedding receptions, and other family celebrations. The hall was home for the renowned Baca Family Band and at one time served as a gymnasium for the Fayetteville High School boys basketball team. Fair and livestock shows, baseball games, and fundraisers of all kinds contribute to the property’s storied past. We will never know all of the stories, experiences, and characters whose histories are linked to the Fayetteville meeting hall; however, we do know that time has taken its toll on the structure. Proceeds raised from the event sponsors will help to ensure that the historic lodge hall remains in good condition for present and future gen-

I am very relieved that winter is gone, and spring is here. The weather in Central Texas has been beautiful lately. The weather was especially beautiful when my mother (Rose Vrazel), my grandparents (Anton and Albina Vrazel), and myself all attended the Spring Awakening Dance at Knights of Columbus Hall in West. When we all left for the dance in the morning, it was quite chilly. Then around 12 noon, the sun came out and the temperature shot up to a perfect 70 degrees. While driving to West from Temple, I enjoyed hearing my grandfather tell stories from his days with Vrazels’ Polka Band. The sights of the green cedar trees and cattle grazing were very nice to look at during our drive up to the hall. That’s Texas scenery at its finest! When we all arrived at the hall, we were ready to eat the plate lunch that was being served. Since the smell of tender beef tips, creamy mashed potatoes, and fresh green beans was calling our names, we all indulged in the homecooking. My grandmother’s homemade fruit cake polished off the meal just right. Lots of our friends seemed to agree with me since they were munching on some of it, too. After having our food and fellowship, The Dujka Brothers kicked off the show with lots of polka power. They
also played “Beautiful Dream Waltz” in six flats which is not easy to do. However, the guys dedicated the song to my grandfather since they know he liked his flat keys when he played accordion. The brothers played wonderfully and were more than happy to visit with us at our table. Next up was “Czech and Then Some.” This band played marvelously and even performed a few songs from the Czech Republic. I thought it was amazing how this fine group of musicians were able to bring some of the authentic Czech culture to Texas. Too bad they didn’t bring any kolaches to share with everyone also, ha-ha. I was a little worried at the beginning of the dance when I saw how small the crowd was. However, after about 20 minutes, people began pouring in and dancing to the fabulous songs. Towards the end of the dance, a jam session was held, and I had the honor to drum as a guest with both bands. John Dujka jokingly told me, “Justin, play those drums in the key of F.” We had a fantastic time at the Spring Awakening Dance and really enjoyed visiting with our fellow polka dance-goers as well. I am very honored to live
in an area with such kind people and musicians who enjoy polka music as much as my family and I do. April 22, 2018, was truly a wonderful kind of day. —SPJST—

March 12 and a “Happy Anniversary” to Greg and Jennifer McCarthy on March 17. Our April meeting was spectacular! We had some great strategic discussions on some tactics for the near future of success for our lodge. Join Hands Day project is in progress and is going to be done with Star Ranch Community in helping the Williamson Regional County Animal Shelter. All be sure to check your emails with the donation list and link. Birthdays in April were Greg McCarthy and Dennis McCarthy (father of Greg) on the 3rd and Luke McCarthy was 10 years old on the 30th! All ended with a tasty potluck meal.
Next Meeting—May 6 Due to Mother’s Day weekend, the next gathering will be on the first Sunday, May 6. Blessings to all, Jennifer McCarthy, Reporter —SPJST—

Ennis Sewing Circle
Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, April 12, 2018, in the Sokol Club Room. We met around 8 a.m., stretched Georgia Holy’s pretty quilt, someone made coffee, and before you know it, we had quilters all around. Thank you, members, who came early to quilt. We quilted till noon, President Irene led us in grace, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch as always. After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order with 19 members present. She led us with the “Our Father” for Matthew Svehlak, Frank Bartoli, and all our sick members. Secretary Sandy Pochobradsky was absent so Dolores Vrana read the minutes for her. Dolores also gave her treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read. Sunshine Lady Dorothy Prachyl had a card to sign for Margaret Martinek in memory of her grandson Matthew and a birthday card for Joyce Ehrenberger. Margaret was our member for many years until she moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. As she was our only birthday celebrant, we didn’t get to sing. Quilt Scheduler Pat Fowler announced we will quilt the Christmas quilt in May, and some members will cut squares for next year’s 2019 Junior Sokol fund quilt. Remember, everyone start collecting items for the July white elephant sale and items for show-and-tell. We have several new members, and we hope you bring many items to show and talk about. President Irene always shows how she cuts different quilt top squares, how she sorts the different colors then how she sews them together. It is always so interesting. President Irene thanked all for the work we did making the quilt show such a success. We all gave Irene a standing ovation for the wonderful job she did. We also thanked Liz Krajca for the beautiful job she did on the program books and for Maggie Holy bringing the items for our lunch. We thank you all so much. I am happy to say that President Irene was our 50-50 dollar winner, and Lil Kosarek won a pretty Kleenex-covered box. It was donated by Lillie Macalik. Thank you, Lillie, and thank you for being such a devoted quilter. Kay Lynn Kovar made a motion to adjourn the meeting, and it was seconded by Pat Fowler. It was so good to see everyone. We hope you make the next meeting on Thursday, May 10. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

In Memory of Joseph Ondrusek, Sr.
Born in 1943 to Willie and Carlyn Ondrusek at St. Paul’s Hospital, Joseph “Joe” Carl Ondrusek, Sr. grew up with his sister Barbara in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas. He attended Roger Mills Elementary and graduated from Adamson High School. Joe served in the R.O.T.C. in high school and found leadership guidance within the organization as drill team Commander earning the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. The lead- Joe Ondrusek, Sr. ership continued at East Texas State University where he was treasurer and president of his fraternity Delta Tau Delta. Joe graduated from East Texas State University in 1966 with a Bachelor of Business Administration. Joe was a lifelong member of SPJST. He was an active member of SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas. Even at a young age, he served in many capacities from the beginning as a charter youth club member to be bat boy for the eventual state champion softball team. In 1957, Joe was crowned the first-ever youth king of Lodge 84. As an adult, he served as president for two terms at the lodge level. Over the years, he was very helpful with his time and donations through many fundraising events for the local lodge. Joe often referred to the lodge members as his “Lodge Family.” His commitment to helping and supporting the lodge over the years is a characteristic that was passed on to him through his parents and grandparents. Joe began his career at Columbia Packing Company, Inc. in 1967 joining his brothers Billy and Bob along with his father Willie. He began as a truck driver, enjoyed his work in the accounting department as well as numerous production roles, and became president of Columbia in 1978. This year, Joe celebrated, with his colleagues and family, his 50 years with Columbia Packing. Joe met Timpy in 1971 on a ski trip, and their love story began. They were married in 1973 in Dallas. Their dinner parties, dance floor moves, and devotion for each other were the envy of everyone they met. They have two children together, Carl and Amber.
Sunnyvale, a small suburb of Dallas, had a small school district where Joe and Timpy chose to raise Carl and Amber. Joe attended a couple of school board meetings and felt that his time and resources could help the community. He served on the board for four years before becoming president his final year. Joe was taught by his grandfather that life was about family—even in the larger sense—a family linked by community. Joe was a member and on the board of directors for Dallas Fort Worth Grocers Association. He was a founding member of the Texas Spurs, the social arm of the Texas Retail Grocers. Under Joe’s leadership, Columbia Packing was awarded The Century Award from the Southwest Meat Association. The Ondrusek Family was present to receive the award. Joe was quoted as saying, “It is an honor for such a highly regarded organization as SMA to recognize my family.” Joe took pride that Columbia remains in the hands of the Ondrusek family with his daughter, son, and nephew Rusty. Having spent more than twenty years working side by side with Amber, Carl, and Rusty, Joe passed along the spirit that embodies Columbia Packing. In his spare time, he loved to make sausage with his college friend Ron Skrasek in Oklahoma and Vince Aloi. He looked forward to sharing the knowledge his grandfather gave him as well as let loose with this friends. For more than a decade, Joe was the grillmaster for the annual Lakeside Village Fourth of July event. He also could be found with his foot on the petal behind a Corvette! His love for his Corvettes began in college and continued throughout his life. He and Timpy traveled the United States with the Corvette club making friends and memories all along the way. His travels didn’t end there, he continued to ski every chance he could, yellowfin tuna fish, travel abroad, and he never met a beach that he didn’t love. Pappa Joe was a grandfather to three boys - Drew, Cole, and Cade. He loved to attend Drew’s football games, fish with Cole, and teach Cade how to golf. His patience and understanding for not only his children but grandchildren was in everything he did. He was a mentor, cheerleader, and backbone to his family. Joe celebrated his life every day; therefore, we will honor it in the same way. A Celebration of Life will be Saturday, May 5 between the hours of 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. at Hella Shrine Temple, 2121 Rowlett Road in Garland. —SPJST—

Larry W. Pflughaupt, FIC says his learning about SPJST started at the age of 15 when he was honored as the first Prince of Lodge 88, Houston. He remained active in the organization by participating in the youth program, and later as an adult member on a variety of committees, including rules and regulations, auditing, entertainment, and remunerations. He also served as president of Lodge 88 in 1982 and 1983. Under his leadership, the lodge experienced its first large scale multi-organizational Czech festival. He also served on the board of trustees and as lodge treasurer. With his civil engineering/psychology education
The FAOT, formerly known as the Texas Fraternal Congress (TFC), was established in 1900 as a cooperative forum to provide its member organizations — fraternal benefit societies operating within the state of Texas — an opportunity to meet with each other on an annual — and as needed — basis to report on the activities of their fraternal life insurance operations, to address areas of common concern, and to introduce attendees to pertinent items — most notably regulatory and insurance underwriting issues — facing fraternal benefit societies on the national level. From 2005 through 2016, the FAOT hosted the FAOT Bowling Tournament. The tournament pro-

At the district level, Larry has audited many financial records and auctioned items for fundraising. He has served as a delegate to all SPJST conventions since 1976, and was elected vice chairman of the 1988 Convention. He has been an insurance sales agent since 1983. He was elected District Five Director in 2000 and retired from that position in 2016. “I feel that my 36 years of experience with Texas Department of Transportation will add diversity of knowledge to move the Senior Living Centers Board toward new realms of senior living,” Larry says. Training and skills he acquired at the Department include the areas of personal computers, statistical evaluation and number crunching, property evaluation and acquisition, environmental and archaeological impacts, civil design of

Revenues that were raised by the bowling tournament and various fundraising initiatives between 2005 and 2015 were directed to the FAOT Scholarship Fund. highway facilities, transportation planning and operations, and traffic safety funding and contract management. “As I reflect back through the years, I remember observing my uncle Alfred Hilsher, Earnest Hanka, and Louis Hanus as they molded their Supreme Lodge directorships,” Larry recalls. “Their successes were due to good common sense, and putting in that personal extra effort to get the job done. All three served with fairness, honesty, and integrity. I continue to function in that fraternal spirit.” “I appreciate all Senior Living personnel for their dedication to provide clean, odor-free accommodations, along with the attentive care of their residents,” Larry says. “You are the foundation for solid growth in this organization. I would be remiss by not saying thank you to outgoing District Five Rest Home Director, Lonnie Lostak, for his many years of loyal dedication to that position.”

2017 - 2018 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance
Third Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the June 2017 to May 2018 youth year. This is total merit points for the 2017-2018 youth year thusfar. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended from June 2017 to May 2018. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities.
What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards.
Contest Dates June 1, 2017 to May 31, 2018
Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior
Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Youth Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Youth Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Youth Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest. Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Youth
Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.
Merit Point Awards First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division. Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through fifth place awards to qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The junior and teen with the most points in each district also receive recognition. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first place will receive the award. Junior and Teen Point Awards First Place $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place - $20 Fourth Place - $15 Fifth Place $10
What is an Active Youth Member? A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten
year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school. Dist Ldg Name Pts Mtgs

Heart of the Tin Trunk to be presented in West this Friday
The McLennan-Hill County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will be hosting a DVD presentation of the play Heart of the Tin Trunk by La Grange native Virginia Mika Leech in the West High School Auditorium on Friday, May 4, 2018, at 7 p.m. It will be free of charge and open to the public. McLennan-Hill County President John Blaha and officers would like to welcome anyone interested in seeing the play to learn about their Czech heritage and the immigrant experience. According to the play’s website, the goal of playwright Virginia Leech is to encourage today’s elders to pass on their stories and traditions, but to also remind the contemporary youth of immigrant descendants to hold on to that past and history. It is in their heritage where character, morals, and ethics lay. Texas pride is made up of so many histories and cultural influences, but certainly the music, hard work, joy, and friendship of the Czech and German people is legendary. A battered old tin trunk reveals its hidden heart through family treasures that recall storied memories of perseverance, bravery, and family spirit that bring adventure, discovery, and love to a young Texas girl. The story takes you from today’s generation to the heart of the historic Czech lands, where a mother faces a terrifying decision to take her children on a dangerous journey across an unknown ocean in search of a new life in Texas. Original songs, energetic dances, colorful characters, and romance are featured in this celebration of life and family. The story is based on real historical Fayette County immigrants, the Czechs and Germans who made Central Texas their home. This play was originally presented at the Festival Institute in Round Top, Texas, in 2011 and 2012 and enjoyed immense popularity in the Texas Czech community. For more information contact John Blaha at 254-707-0274 or visit www.heartofthetintrunk.com. Jana Riley —SPJST—

Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center to host Slavnost
TCHCC will celebrate Slavnost ‘May Fest’ on the third Sunday of May. The weekend events begin on Saturday, May 19. It’s another great night under the stars! On Saturday evening, The StandIn (Záskok) will be performed from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sanford Schmid Amphitheater in the TCHCC Complex. Záskok, written by Ladislav Smoljak and Zdeněk Svěrák, premiered in the Czech
Republic in March 1994. It is a comedy set in 1910 about a small troupe of actors who find themselves short of company members. To allow the show to go on, they call in the famous Czech actor Karel Infeld Prachensky to perform one of the parts. However, the show becomes disastrous when the famous actor forgets his lines, causing chaos to ensue. The beginning of the play sets up the belief that Jara Cimrman, a fictional Czech personality, wrote the play being watched. “It is a real honor to take this beloved piece and to shepherd it onto the inter-

national stage.” – Brian Caspe, Actor in the Cimrman English Theatre. With the first visit to the United States, The Stand-In was performed at distinguished establishments such as the Bohemian National Hall in New York City on April 19 and 22, 2017, and later at the Czech Embassy in Washington, D.C. This truly will be a wonderful evening overlooking the Colorado River Valley. The annual Slavnost ‘May Fest’ and Tribute to the Immigrants to Texas will be held on Sunday, May 20. The day will begin with music in the Koliba Foyer at 9 a.m. along with svačina. The
