From the Fraternal Department
State Fraternal Director shares May updates
It’s almost here! May 19: SPJST Founders Day One of the featured events scheduled at 3 p.m. for the SPJST Founders Day Celebration on Saturday, May 19 at SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville is the cornhole tournament. The cornhole tournament will be open to anyone! Cost to play is $10 per person. Players will draw for partners. Trophies and prize money will be awarded to winners. Pre-registration is also available. Call 254-5340681. The modern game of cornhole, known more commonly as bean bags or just bags in the Chicago area, was likely spread after an article on how to make the boards was published in Popular Mechanics magazine in September 1974. The game spread in Chicago, Illinois, and the Northwest region of Indiana in the late 1970s and early 1980s. See complete event information at spjst.org or on page 1 with more information about the day’s activities and prize drawing information. If you would like to purchase prize drawing tickets, please call the SPJST Home Office at 800-727-7578.
Corpus Christi Getaway is back on! Corpus Christi Getaway is back on for 2018! Good times await you at the Corpus Christi End-of-Summer Getaway. Start making your plans now to join us on August 10 to 12 for a funfilled weekend. We will be staying at Emerald Beach Hotel which is located right on the beach. There will be a lot of activities for the whole family. Additional details will be presented in the Vestnik as they become available.
National Polka Festival We invite all members to the National Polka Festival in Ennis to come help celebrate 51 years of Czech heritage festivities Friday, May 25 to Sunday, May 27, 2018. The National Polka Festival offers an abundance of activities to be enjoyed by the entire family in a small city atmosphere. SPJST is a proud sponsor of the event. At 10 a.m. on Saturday, floats, bands, and colorful costumes will kick-off the downtown festivities. The parade includes something for visitors of all ages. Enjoy the music of polka bands and our very own SPJST State Royalty riding on the SPJST Float. This year, SPJST is sponsoring the main stage downtown, and at 1 p.m., you will find the SPJST kolache eating
contest. Men, women, boys, and girls can join in the fun to see who can finish eating their kolache first. Prizes will be awarded to the first place winner of each category. SPJST will be at the event all day Saturday and Sunday with other activities going on.
Save the Date: Come to Camp Kubena! We want you to come join us at Camp Kubena! Fun times ahead! We are extending an invitation to SPJST youth that are not part of a lodge youth club and the youth that are new to SPJST. Youth who have a life insurance certificate issued before May 31, 2018, can come join us at camp! Camp is a great place to make new friends and build self confidence. Camp Kubena offers swimming, games, high ropes courses, low ropes courses, BB guns, archery, and many other activities.
• Qualifications for camp: If your child has completed kindergarten and is a current youth club member and has made seven out of 12 meetings, he/she will be eligible to attend camp without pay.
• Youth that attend lodges with no youth club can attend seven adult meetings and qualify for camp without pay. The lodge secretary will need to provide the Home Office with copies of the membership roster of each meeting the youth attended.
• Youth that have not made at least seven meetings will be prorated $35 per meeting missed. Youth can make up a meeting by attending another local youth club. Please see your youth leader about this.
Member Referrals Wanted: Participate in the Monthly Prize Drawing! When it comes to getting new SPJST members, there is no substitute for member referrals. Referral cards received during a given month will go into a drawing for three $25 Walmart gift cards. The individual making the referral also benefits the SPJST by helping to build a stronger and more active local lodge. On a related note, SPJST is looking for men and women who believe in the fraternal ideal and would like to consider the benefits of being an SPJST Sales Agent.

District Six Spring Meeting Minutes
The District Six Spring Meeting was held on Sunday, April 15, 2018, at St. Mary’s Parish Hall in Hallettsville, Texas. Lodges 4, Hallettsville and 63, Sweet Home co-hosted the event with 70 members and guests present. After registration and the morning social, Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek led the blessing. Lodges 4 and 63 prepared a delicious barbecue pork and sausage dinner with all the trimmings. Immediately following the meal, President Joe Siptak (4) asked for special reports from representatives of the Czech Heritage Museum, Education and Nature Center (Camp Kubena), S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Centers, and the Cemetery Committees. Philip Vahalik (4) reported that the Czech Heritage Museum has a new website. He encouraged all members to visit the Czech Heritage Museum. Visitors to the museum have increased over the last four years. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday. The Museum has a new vendor, Kolache Kitchen, next door. Also, the Beltonian Theatre will be having performances, one being a Czech play. Philip also highlighted the Czech play being held at Sokol Hall in Dallas and Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, anniversary of the Czech Republic, genealogical society, and SPJST Car Show in May. Lisa Bubela (30) reported on Camp Kubena. Camp Kubena is still active under the 501(c)3 non-profit status. The camp is busy preparing for the summer season. Camp Kubena continues to accept donations. Camp Kubena held a workshop for chaperones for the summer. Members and guests are welcome to visit the camp. Executive Director Jeb welcomes visitors. Camp is also available for family reunions, retreats, conferences, etc. Contact Camp Kubena to see what date is available for your event or function. President Brian Vanicek explained the reason for the name change. SPJST acquired the Education and Nature Center in December 2016 from LCRA. The name change is to pay tribute to former SPJST State Secretary Mr. J.R. Kubena who served from 1897 to 1938. Camp Kubena has daily management. Receipts for Camp Kubena have exceeded the previous year. Charles Bucek (151) reported on the S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Centers. All rest homes are in very good shape. Living Center renovations have been paid. The Needville Living Center has 92 of 96 beds full. With repairs and upkeep, the Needville facility looks good. Hillje’s living facility seems to not be able to get
VĚSTNÍK
more than 48 of the available 54 beds filled. Management of Hillje is good and working on getting over the 48. A good job is being done. S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Centers Board of Directors is having several changes due to various resignations. Overall, the operation of the living centers is doing very well. David Bucek (151) reported for the Cemetery Committee. He discussed the expense of caring for cemeteries. Moravia for mowing is $780, and Shiner is $970. Velehrad does not have a mowing expense since Mr. Bucek is taking care of it as his health permits. Moravia and Shiner were both over state funds. Cemetery Association did receive funds from the mineral lease at the Shiner Cemetery for $2,500. New road into Moravia Cemetery was accomplished with an anonymous donation for $7,000. They are looking into the road for the Velehrad Cemetery which is estimated at $7,500. Convention year in 2020 will be looking for an increase in funds to support cemeteries. The Czech Heritage Museum elected representative was needed for 2018. Lisa Bubela (30) made a motion to reelect Philip Vahalik. Jeanette Kaminsky (28) seconded the motion. Motion passed.
President Joe Siptak (4) called the District Six Spring Meeting to order at 1 p.m. President Joe Siptak led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. He wished them a safe trip traveling home. Second Vice President/FAC Helen Zabransky (4) thanked Lodges 4 and 63 for co-hosting the meeting, for their hospitality, and for preparing the delicious meal. Helen welcomed and introduced guests - Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, District Six Director Karen Kaspar, and Fraternal Field Manager Delisle Doherty. Earlier today, DYC Lisa Bubela held a youth workshop. It is difficult to get all youth clubs together, and the district meeting is a wonderful place to present information and help youth in the district prepare for their fraternal youth events. March 24 was the state workshop for the youth leaders. Also, any youth with a policy who does not have a youth club in their lodge may attend camp. A nominal fee may be charged. Youth members without local lodges are welcome to participate in the District Six youth activities. President Siptak (4) asked for reports from the standing committees. Joe Siptak represents District Six on the ByLaw Committee. He reported the By-Law Committee will meet beginning in January 2020. Helen Kelner (28), District Six Publication Committee representative, reported savings in printing the Vestnik due to changing paper and an increased membership receiving the Vestnik by email. Helen reported that there were several requests for the SPJST Calendar. Supreme Lodge will return to sending the calendar in 2019. Glenn Kaminsky (28) represents District Six on the Finance Committee. He reported that income to SPJST is not only from insurance sales. Income is also from investments. Home Office does a good job of managing monies and investing wisely for the membership. Annuity product sales were down in 2017; however, we have better or comparable rates to other companies. Put the word out concerning our annuities. Supreme Lodge has to make decisions on spending monies also. SPJST has many areas where funds are distributed, and requests are constantly coming in. Home Office along with the Board of Directors have to be conservative and prudent with spending. Membership needs to be good. Spread the word about SPJST! Elizabeth Holub (23) represents District Six on the Insurance Committee. She reported that they have not met since 2016, but they will meet prior to the 2020 Convention. Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek. President Vanicek reported on the building on property adjacent to the Home Office will become full property of SPJST. The use will be for General Service Administration. It is currently being used by the City of Temple at this time. SPJST will be able to refurbish and use it to rent out and become an asset to SPJST. Also, SPJST receives funds from retained minerals on previous foreclosed

properties. Mr. Vanicek also reported that a lot is going on with SPJST. Insurance sales and volume are up, and SPJST is a billion dollar business. He welcomes everyone to attend the SPJST Car Show on May 5 at Lodge 47, Seaton. Monies generated support the SPJST Foundation which in turn supports Czech Heritage Museum and Camp Kubena. Another event that is coming up on May 19 is the Founders Day Celebration at Lodge 1, Fayetteville. The lodge hall is 100 years old, and funds will be used to refurbish the hall. President Vanicek also discussed the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive and to pay tribute to former dedicated members and officers, names are being given to scholarships presented. Lodge 19, Velehrad hall has successfully been moved to its new home at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange. Work is being done to restore furniture and the hall to its last century glory. An open house will be held once work has been completed - possibly in the fall of 2018. District Six Fraternal Field Manager Delisle Doherty reported that the membership has lots of benefits. Programs in place are youth program, Camp Kubena, bingo, and in 2016, PerkSpot was added. PerkSpot gives membership discounts on flights, hotels, etc. All you need to do is register at www.spjst.org under “Benefits.” He also reported District Six has had an increase in membership and premiums. The orphan program where agents are no longer active is being revamped. Stressed that SPJST is one society comprised of seven districts and 100 lodges. It is important to update all policies. Referrals are welcome. Mr. Doherty also stated that he has agents working the Universal Life policies. He continues to hire agents with license or who is willing to get a license. He introduced Sheryl Lebman, who is
a new agent for Lodge 8, Weimar. He encourages growth of lodges with bridge program for more active members. District Six Director Karen Kaspar thanked everyone for attending and appreciates their commitment and dedication. She thanked Lodges 4 and 63 for co-hosting and wished everyone attending safe travels home. Ms. Kaspar reported on the District Six Discretionary Fund donations for 2017. Donations were made to El Campo Retirement Center - $300, El Campo Volunteer Fire Department - $500, El Campo Little League - $200, For The Kids - $1,000, Taiton Community Center - $200, Everyday Heroes - $500, and St. Nicholas Ministry - $300. She shared a short recap of activities that took place in 2017 for District Six:
• Velehrad building moved to its new home at Texas Czech and Heritage Cultural Center in La Grange (October 2017) • Lodge 32, Victoria building sold successfully and Victoria lodge continues to be vibrant • Lodge 41, Port Lavaca donated land to Six Mile Fire Department and grand opening was held on April 7. An agreement was made that Lodge 41 would be able to use the meeting room in the fire department facility. • 13 active lodges in District Six • Work is continuing with Shiner and the Sister City program. The process continues for reactivating Lodge 10, Shiner lodge. • Lodge 125, Westhoff members will be reassigned to active neighboring lodges. Lodge 125 is currently at 11member count. • Will be looking at the statuses of Lodge 223, Palacios and Lodge 240, Bay City through 2018.

Jerry and Janie Marusak celebrate 65th wedding anniversary
Jerry and Janie Marusak celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, May 9, 2018. Janie is a member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis. They first met at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ennis at the young ages of 17 and 21. They married on May 9, 1953, and had the traditional Czech wedding mass at 10 a.m. on a Saturday at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ennis. Following the wedding mass, it was tradition to serve homemade chicken noodle soup for lunch at the Czech dance hall then the wedding gifts would be opened by the bride and groom with anxious guests admiring the gifts. The wedding cakes would also be cut and served following the gift opening. Then at 5 p.m., the Czech supper would be served with the typical Czech sausages, complete with sauerkraut, salads, and desserts. A Czech polka band would soon start the grand march with guests participating in the festivities. The band would play until midnight for all to enjoy, young and old. After their marriage, Jerry who was enlisted in the Air Force, was assigned to Alexandria, Louisiana. The newlyweds moved there and welcomed their first child - daughter Janet, the following year. With Jerry spending four years in the Air Force, he received his training as an aircraft mechanic, and they moved back to Texas where Jerry would work in the airline industry his entire career. Janie remained a housewife, and they welcomed another daughter Jenna and son Jerry, Jr. The family would travel back to Ennis each Sunday to visit their families where happy memories will always be held close to their hearts - wonderful Czech homemade meals and time spent with loved ones on the family farms. The couple’s oldest daughter Janet completed her bachelor’s degree in dietics and also completed her Juris Doctorate degree. She practices law in Ellis County. Janet has two children - daughter Ana, who currently is married and is a gynecologist in Pensacola, Florida, and son Andrew is attending medical school in Guadalajara, Mexico. Their second child Jenna is married to David Hunter. They have three children - Rachel, who graduated from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, was 2005 SPJST State Queen, and
currently lives in Austin; Bryant, who graduated from Tarleton State in Stephenville and lives in the San Antonio area; and Jordan, who graduated from Tarleton in Stephenville and was married in April. All three children were active members at SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis. Their third child Jerry, Jr. is married and resides with his wife and two children in Crowley - son Alex, who is graduating from the University of Texas at Arlington in May with an engineering degree, and daughter Marissa, who works and attends junior college. Jerry and Janie continue to reside in Ferris, where all of their children were raised. They live on a farm where they continue to raise cattle and hay. Jerry retired from his career as an aircraft mechanic, of which he has fond memories. He and Janie traveled along with their children throughout the United States and Europe. Janie continues to be a housewife and enjoys cooking and baking. Her specialty is homemade kolaches and egg noodles. She also enjoys genealogy. Janie has researched her own Novy family and her spouse’s Marusak family. Janie continues to update her books as she receives new history on the families. Jerry and Janie are members of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Ferris and St. John’s Catholic Church in Ennis. They enjoy attending the St. John’s Golden Crusaders monthly meeting for the golden church community members.
Daddy and Momma, we thank you for all of your sacrifices and labors of love. You always put us first instead of yourselves and are always helping others. May you both always have joy, happiness, peace, and all our love. Happy anniversary, Daddy and Momma, Grandpa and Grandma. We all love you. SPJST Lodge 191, Lufkin and Lufkin Dance Club joined together to give dance lessons every Tuesday night in April. A great big thanks to instructors Bernard and Catherine Hylands for doing an excellent job of teaching the students the basics of dancing. They taught the twostep, waltz, polka, and a few line dances thrown in. The students seemed to have a great time, and they did quite well. There were adults as well as teenagers among the students. The last Tuesday night ended with refreshments, cookies, dip and chips, and lemonade. They all seemed to appreciate the food and drink. Thanks to those of you that furnished the food. The April SPJST dance featured Glenn Lenderman and Friends. As usual,

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth
President Cathy opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and asked for a moment of silence in memory of member Louise Collins who passed away recently. Janet Basham then gave an inspirational and thoughtful reading. Business proceeded as usual with Secretary Joan reading the minutes which were approved as read, and Treasurer Margaret Laymance giving the financial update. Marlene Bass, our sunshine chair, sent a card to Pauline Morbitzer for her recent eye surgery, and updates were
given on others who were unable to be with us due to health issues. Alene Kercho is still recovering from the stroke she had but is better now; Betty Krenek is receiving chemotherapy and is also on the upswing; and Caroline O’Brien is in therapy and hoping to go home soon. We missed each of you and are sending prayers for good days ahead. We were also missing many of our regulars, and we hope that all are okay and were just busy on meeting day. The ladies of the Circle have an ongoing project named “Gloria’s Gifts.” We collect can tabs and Coke lids, soup labels, and whatever else shows up. Lisa Juran delivered seven gallons of can tabs to the local Ronald McDonald House this past month, and she reported that you’d thought we gave them a million dollars. She also took the can lids to Castleberry Elementary who was most appreciative as well. The staff at the Ronald McDonald House sent a lovely thank you note which Lisa shared with everyone. Thank you to Lisa for continuing Gloria’s legacy by making sure these items are taken to where they belong. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. The Easter Bunny made her annual visit to the lodge for the Ladies Circle meeting in April. She left behind a huge nest of eggs and prizes for everyone. President Cathy Simmank and her bunny helper friends prepared a fun-filled
Easter egg hunt for the ladies. This year, each member had to find eggs that spelled out E-A-S-T-E-R, and they also had to search for their very own personalized egg. Each egg was filled with candy, nickels, or with prize notes. The Bunny worked hard on her prizes which included packages of cookies, decorated cupcakes, pencils and erasers, a plant, garden decorations, and money for bingo. Standing back and watching when the president said “go” was like going to a sale in a department store. The ladies didn’t hesitate to get into the swing of the activities. Everyone participated, and it is always so much fun with a lot of laughing and giggling. We have to give Cathy huge kudos for the work she put into this annual event. It was so fun and so unique. Next month, we will honor our mothers with stories of how they loved us even when we were “unlovable.” My mother Carmen Simek left me when I was only 13 years of age, and today, I give thanks for the mothers of my friends, Mary Ann Juran and Joyce Hubenak. Mrs. Juran and Mrs. Hubenak were instrumental in teaching me things that my mother would have taught me. Most of all, there was Mona Lee Hattendorf, my aunt, a beautiful lady inside and out, who watched over me for many years. So sorry to get personal, but I wanted to lift up those Czech ladies who were so special to me and whom many of you knew, Our birthday girls for April were celebrated. They were Lisa Juran, Joy Booe, Joyce Tesar, Kathy Thome, Marie Keller, and Lydia Alholm - a big 98 and still driving. Those missing in action were Cherie Price, Sherrie Watkins, Wanda Moree, Alene Kercho, and Pattie

Williams. The birthday song was sung, and later they led the way to lunch. We also send happy birthday wishes to all for another grand year. There were 10 lucky winners of door prizes after which Mary Ann Krivanek read a couple of cute stories from her phone. Janet Basham led the blessing for lunch, and we adjourned to sample all things good. Hostesses for this day were Evelyn Scaff, Bessie, Lisa and Garland Ellsworth, and Lucy Martinez. Thank you for stepping in to take care of lunch duties at the last minute. Lunch was awesome with a lot of yummy items. Bingo followed lunch, and I didn’t win a thing. Come be with us in May to honor your mother. Respectfully submitted, Joan Simek Shropshire Secretary —SPJST—

State Fraternal Director shares May youth updates
SPJST Graduating Seniors As I sit here constructing my May newsletter, I can’t help to think about our seniors getting ready to graduate and move on to their next journey in life. When I took on the State Youth Director position back in 2010, this year’s graduating seniors were in the fourth grade. Uh-oh . . . I just gave away my age! It has been a blessing for me to watch you grow up in the SPJST Youth Program and transform into the awesome adults you are. So spread those wings and make your SPJST family proud of you, and always remember you have a home with SPJST. Congratulations, and I wish you only the best life has to offer. Our youth program is top notch in the state. I wish more members would have their children participate in the program. Who is Johnny Appleseed? Who is Johnny Appleseed? Johnny Appleseed lived in the days of early America. He became a legend, and many stories were told about him. Some people do not know he was a real person. His name was John Chapman, and he was born in the state of Massachusetts in 1774. His father, Nathaniel, was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. His mother, Elizabeth, died when he was still a very young child. When he grew up, he made it his life's work to plant fruit trees in the developing parts of the country. He carried sacks of apple seeds with him and planted orchards throughout the Northwest Territory. The states of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois were formed from this area. His mission was to plant fruit trees so the settlers, as they moved west, would have something to sustain them as they tried to survive in the new land. In 1802, he carried sixteen bushels of apple seeds down the Ohio River. He had two canoes lashed together to transport the seeds. Most of the time he carried the seeds in leather bags on horseback, or on his own back. He dressed simply, wearing clothes he had traded for trees. Sometimes he cut a hole in a sack and wore it as a shirt. Material "things" just did not matter to him. You see pictures of him wearing a pot on his head for a hat. John Chapman was a Christian and conducted his life in a Christ-like manner. He would preach to the families he visited. He called it delivering news "right fresh from heaven". TCHCC, La Grange hosts Slavnost this weekend
TCHCC will celebrate Slavnost ‘May Fest’ this Sunday, May 20, 2018. The weekend events begin on Saturday, May 19. It’s another great night under the stars! On Saturday evening, The StandIn (Záskok) will be performed from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sanford Schmid Amphitheater in the TCHCC Complex. Záskok, written by Ladislav Smoljak and Zdeněk Svěrák, premiered in the Czech Republic in March 1994. It is a comedy set in 1910 about a small troupe of actors who find themselves short of company members. To allow the show to go on, they call in the famous Czech actor Karel Infeld Prachensky to perform one of the parts. However, the show becomes disastrous when the famous actor forgets his lines, causing chaos to ensue. The beginning of the play sets up the belief that Jara Cimrman, a fictional Czech personality, wrote the play being watched. “It is a real honor to take this beloved piece and to shepherd it onto the international stage.” – Brian Caspe, Actor in the Cimrman English Theatre. With the first visit to the United States, The Stand-In was performed at distinguished establishments such as the Bohemian National Hall in New York City on April 19 and 22, 2017, and later at the Czech Embassy in Washington, D.C. This truly will be a wonderful evening overlooking the Colorado River Valley. The annual Slavnost ‘May Fest’ and Tribute to the Immigrants to Texas will be held on Sunday, May 20. The day will begin with music in the Koliba Foyer at 9 a.m. along with svačina. The Tribute to the Immigrants to Texas ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. The ceremony recognizes the families whose Czech ancestors immigrated to Texas. A delicious fried chicken dinner with all the trimmings will be served in the Hanslik Hall beginning at 11:30 a.m. Plenty of Czech style desserts will also be available along with refreshing beverages of all kinds. Music on the deck of the TCHCC from 12 to 6:30 p.m. The Travelers Orchestra of Columbus, Texas, will begin at 12 noon. At 3:30 p.m., there will be a special performance by the Eva Adam’s Czech Ensemble from the Czech Republic, celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Czechoslovakia. A dance floor has been added for all our dancing patrons. The Czech Village and Museums will be open for touring, a hay ride, prize drawing, May pole dance, door prizes, country store, pastry shop, and much more. Item donations for the country store and pastry shop are welcomed. Help with genealogy research will be available in

Texas tour of Czech play “The Stand-In” set for this weekend
Three Czech-Texas organizations have joined to bring the beloved Czech fictional character Jara Cimrman to Texas in May. Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple, and Sokol Dallas are sponsoring three performances of “The Stand-In,” a
comedy by Ladislav Smoljak and Zdenek Sverak, presented by The American Czech Theatre. Executive Producer is Sarah Wilhelm, and it is directed by Sarah Reynolds. Performances will be: Friday, May 18 at 7 p.m. The Beltonian Theatre 219 East Central Avenue in Belton Saturday, May 19 at 7 p.m. Sanford Schmid Amphitheater 250 West Fairgrounds Road La Grange
Sunday, May 20 at 1 p.m. Sokol Dallas 7448 Greenville Avenue in Dallas
For information, contact Sarah Wilhelm at info@tactheatre.org or Susan Chandler at 817-919-9095. “The Stand-In” features the fictional character Jara Cimrman and is one of a unique genre of Czech plays which began as a radio show in the 1960s. Sverak began making references to Cimrman while working at the government radio station. He placed Cimrman at a time in history when the Czechs were under Austria-Hungary, but used the character as a SPJST Lodge 133, San Antonio member John Kuba who lives in Podivín, Czech Republic, shared ples dance/‘ball’ invites, a newspaper clipping, and an ad with the Věstník recently:
Dear Melanie, Here are some announcements of ples, sale of pomlázka at super market, photo from newspaper, kroj, and Easter Monday. We are having warmer weather now. My apricot trees are blooming as well as all spring flowers. My rhubarb is up so I can start pulling it. ~ Yours, John

device to comment on current events. Sverak won an Oscar for 1997 Best Foreign Language Film for Kolya. He wrote and starred in the film, which was directed by his son. “Sverak’s Kolya was one of the first Czech films available here in Texas after communism,” said Retta Chandler, president of Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange. “We are thrilled to participate in this Texas tour of “The Stand-In.” “Many people know Vaclav Havel’s work, but there are a number of great contemporary Czech plays, and they are brilliant pieces of art. I searched for Czech comedies. It’s not that there aren’t many comedies, it’s just that they are not translated. Many people think of Czech theater as dark. It’s not that it’s all dark, but that those works that were politically or historically significant are the ones that have been translated,” Wilhelm said. “The cast is a diverse group, so this has been a good learning opportunity for them about Czech culture,” she said. “They are learning to speak and pronounce Czech. They can take what they learned into their own world, and open a conversation of cultural exchange.” “The Czech heritage in Texas is very strong, but in my experience, outside of

those groups, people are still calling it Czechoslovakia or asking where it is or not even knowing what Czech is,” she said. Although the Cimrman plays have been performed for 50 years in Prague, the shows are still sell-outs, with hundreds of people queing up for tickets when they go on sale. Cimrman is so popular among Czechs, that they voted him “The Greatest Czech of All Time” in 2005. As a fictional character, he was disqualified, but 40,000 people signed petitions in protest, so a new category was created for him. Cimrman fans or “Cimrmanologists” often compare the character to Britain’s Monty Python, but Americans will more likely see a similarity with the Forest Gump character, with one exception. tempts, Cimrman just misses the mark, usually by showing up five minutes late. But, Cimrman does contribute to much of history, showing up for breakthroughs around the world in science, the arts, economics, and politics, earning him the title, “The Master.” “This genre of plays represents the Czech people and culture on many levels,” said Susan Chandler of the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple. “On one hand, there is the plight of the geographically small country always at risk of being overshadowed by its powerful neighbors. On the other, the indomitable spirit of the Czech people ever prevails.
