Service with a Smile!

State Queen April Dvorak and State King Austen Holland, both of Lodge 25, Ennis, greet attendees as they assist in the lunch serving line at SPJST Founders Day held Saturday, May 19 at Lodge 1, Fayetteville. The day included music, dancing, food, a program, and cornhole tournament. More pictures coming soon.

We have a winner!

Congratulations to Dan Mohel, right, of Lodge 29, Taylor! Dan was the lucky winner of the 1966 Ford Mustang that was drawn in a raffle on May 5 that benefited the SPJST Foundation. SPJST Vice President and former Mustang owner Hiram Dixon is pictured presenting the keys to Dan. Thanks to Brother Dixon for all of his efforts with the project.

T

he 13th Annual SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration held Saturday, May 5, 2018, was a grand success - thanks to the sponsors, participants, and volunteers! Weather is always a concern when an outdoor event is planned. We have been extremely lucky in the past as it has rained on only one SPJST Car Show, but the weather cleared before noon that year. This year, the forecast showed 80 to 100 percent rain for the days leading up to the event. The weatherman’s 100 percent rain prediction for Friday, May 4 was accurate. It rained and rained and rained . . . all day long. We met with KCEN-TV at Star Hall at 5:30 a.m. to promote the car show during a couple of live segments. (Special thanks to KCEN, Donica Zabcik, Edwin Pechal, Jim Ansay, Tory Webster, and David Nauert.) We talked up the car show and Czech celebration underneath Star Hall’s nice covered pavilion while it thundered and rained. Despite the weather, we had faith that the rain and clouds would move out, and Saturday would be a beautiful, sunny day. We decided to continue on with the event as many

people were already planning to attend and vendors were starting to arrive. Thanks to the good members at Lodge 47 for their extra-early morning cleaning and blow-drying the parking lot. As the bright sun arose and the cars and people started pulling into the parking lot, we knew that the day would be a big success, and the right decision was made! Special appreciation to our sponsors, participants, and volunteers. It was a magnificent day!

I would like to thank all of the Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point members for their time, effort, and donations for the benefit held for Ricky and Cindy Dixon on April 8, 2018. Also a big shout out to James Hosch of Lodge 200, BrucevilleEddy for his help and to Margaret Campbell of Lodge 24, Cyclone for the donation of the tee-shirt and cookbook from Shiner Bock. A big special thanks to Tarrant and Debbie Alexander and all the lodge helpers from Lodge 47, Seaton. Words cannot express how you made my family feel with all of your kindness and support. Dear SPJST, Donnie Howard, president of Lodge 185, New Braunfels, presented me with a $1,000 SPJST Leadership Grant at the Navarro High School Senior Awards Banquet on Thursday, May 17, 2018. I’m very happy that he could be in attendance to present me with this special honor and also be present when I was named Valedictorian of my class. I would sincerely like to thank SPJST for this scholarship and the many opportunities I’ve been given through my membership in the youth club. I will always cherish my years and adventures in the SPJST Youth Club. I will be attending Texas Tech University in the fall majoring in environmental engineering to start the next adventure in my life. Sincerely, Leah McDonald Lodge 185, New Braunfels —SPJST—

Car show participants share thoughts

Just wanted to say that Saturday’s event was one of the best we have attended in a very long time. All the ones you have hosted in the past were great,

but this one has got to rank at the top. Participation was fantastic and extremely well organized getting everyone a great parking spot. The judging from my perspective was extremely efficient and smooth. Along with the vendors and food - hard to see that the event could have been much more enjoyable. We thank you and your team for a great Saturday event. I’m sure that I speak for everyone in attendance - “We had a fantastic time!” Looking forward to the next one. Thanks again for all you have done to make everything such a success. Harald Weldon Robert Hobby Joe Hogan •••

Lodge 24, Cyclone: All Around Czechs return to Flag Hall this Saturday, June 2

What a great time we all had at the Pre-New Year’s Eve Party dancing and listening to All Around Czechs Band on December 30, 2017, at Flag Hall. My cousin Debbie Vrazel and I tended bar that night and just about the time we were ready to close down, someone took up a collection and asked the band to

play another hour. You got no complaints from me or the band either (I think they were just getting warmed up to play some more). What fun and great music we had all night long! We have been lucky enough to get All Around Czechs to come back for another appearance at Flag Hall (SPJST Lodge 24) in Cyclone this Saturday, June 2 from 7 to 11 p.m. Band members are Brandon Hodde, Gary Greener, James Marek, Jerry Petter, and Chris Trojacek. We are lucky to get all this talent in one band. The last names you probably recognize because they are in families that have members in other bands so we are getting the best of the best. Put on your dancing shoes and come ready to polka, waltz, and even snuggle up to your favorite partner on those good old county songs with Brandon Hodde on the steel guitar and Chris Trojacek with his golden voice singing those beautiful vocals as well as all those good old Czech songs with James backing up Chris on vocals and Jerry “tickling those ivories” on the piano. Plenty of saxophones, trumpets, and of course, a lot of good accordion music. Don’t forget to come hungry as my husband Daniel will be grilling those delicious hamburgers, and you know the bar is always open serving your favorite beverages! We hope to see all of you come out for a night of fun this Saturday, June 2 at 7 p.m. at Flag Hall in Cyclone. Linda M. Wilde Treasurer —SPJST—

2018 JOIN HANDS DAY

Lodge 180, Burleson did not have its usual monthly meeting for May as plans had been made to attend the annual SPJST Car Show in Seaton. We were all so excited and anxious for this event. Our excitement did not meet fruition as several folks had unexpected commitments and were unable to attend. Plus, we had torrential rain in our area as Mother Nature blessed us with much needed moisture. We had chosen a local nursing home facility for our Join Hands Day project this year and were very excited to have an opportunity to participate in the needs of our community. We met at Trinity Mission Health and Rehab Center in Burleson on Saturday, May 19, 2018. We met Rod Heptig, the activity director, and he guided us through the maze of halls to distribute the goodies to the residents. We were able to give each resident a small, colorful stuffed bear and a pair of non-skid socks. Each resident had a great big smile as they received their gifts. It was such a blessing that we were able to spend a few minutes with each person and brighten their day with the gifts as well as talking to each one. I had one lady that thanked me over and over for her gifts as well as talking with and coming to see her. I know that the other lodge members had the same feelings about our Join Hands Day project results as I did. We also made a monetary donation of $500 to be utilized for the residents that had no familial support.

Ennis Sewing Circle

Ennis Sewing Circle met on May 10, 2018, in the Sokol Club Room. Ann Clagett, Irene Prachyl, Dorothy Kucera, Pat Fowler, Georgia Holy, Dee Anderson, Maggie Holy, Lillie Macalik, Dorothy Prachyl, Vickie Vlk, and Georgie Morales all came fairly early. I hope I didn’t miss anyone. We stretched the Christmas quilt and had quilters all around. This quilt is a queen-size and is very pretty with lots of quilting. We didn’t get very far on it; we had to roll it up and will quilt on it again next month. So quilters, please come next month; we need you all.

As President Irene was the only officer present, she ran the whole show, and she did a super job. Treasurer Dolores Vrana had a doctor’s appointment, Ginny wasn’t feeling well, and Secretary Sandy has resigned. She will be doing a lot of traveling. We will miss you. Come visit when you happen to be in town on our meeting day. One of our new members Dee Anderson volunteered to take that position. We thank you for that. We know you will do a great job.

We had 15 members present. President Irene led us in grace, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance and “Our Father” for Joe Marusak who passed away. We also said a special prayer for Dolores Vrana and Ginny Svehlak. We hope you both get well soon. We miss you. As Sandy Pochobradsky was absent and has resigned her position, we had no minutes to read. President Irene read the treasurer’s report for Dolores. It was announced, discussed, and voted on that we reimburse President Irene $40 for items she purchased for the quilt show. Sunshine Lady Dorothy Prachyl announced May birthday celebrants Lorene Marusak, Ginny Svehlak, Ann Clagett, and Dorothy Prachyl. “Happy Birthday” was sung to all but Ginny. We signed a card for Ginny and hope she had a great day on her birthday. President Irene announced that next month - June, we will have visitors from Ennis Now Magazine. Everyone, be sure to come as we want to have a good group. I think they are going to put an article in the magazine. They may take a picture of our group so we want to have as many members present as we can. That will be exciting. President Irene thanked, showed, and talked about the beautiful picture album of our quilt show that Janie Haskovec Matthews made for our Circle. We all thank her so much and will treasure it always. I have the album now as I promised two of our shut-in members I would bring it by for them to see. Quilt Scheduler Pat Fowler announced that next month, we will con-

Kay Lynn Kovar read several funny jokes that we all enjoyed. Thank you, Kay Lynn! For show-and-tell, President Irene had several mug rugs that she has made. A mug rug is something you put under your cup of coffee or drink by your recliner. It is a square piece of quilted fabric of any size, any color, or just whatever you want. They were really pretty. Irene said she has one by her television chair, by her sewing machine, and can’t remember where else. Dorothy Kudrna announced on May 30, the Wednesday after National Polka Festival, we are having our Senior Fitness Day at Sokol gym at 10 a.m. Come a little before 10 a.m. as all have to sign in and get your name tag. Fort Worth Friendship Club

Lodge 185, New Braunfels youth receives SPJST Leadership Grant

Lodge 185, New Braunfels member Leah McDonald is presented a $1,000 SPJST Leadership Grant at the Navarro High School Senior Awards Banquet on Thursday, May 17, 2018, by Lodge 185 President Donnie Howard. Leah was also named Valedictorian of her class. Congratulations, Leah!

Members of Fort Worth Friendship Club met Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at St. Thomas Parish Hall for their monthly meeting and social. The meeting was called to order by President Barbara Becknell, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. Everyone was welcomed and before the meeting started, everyone was busy displaying their items for the white elephant sale. Since everyone wanted enough time to “shop,” it was voted to dispense with the reading of the minutes from the previous meeting. Treasurer Margaret Sears presented the financial report which was approved as presented. Helen Skrasek reported her friend/neighbor and Friendship Club homebound member Paula Arsenault passed away on April 29. She had originally moved to Humble and was living with her daughter. On Easter, Paula fell and broke her hip. Our sympathy goes

out to Paula’s son who lives in Fort Worth and her daughter who lives in Humble. Paula always sat at our table, and the daughter mailed Helen a funeral home notice for each of us which had a lovely photo of Paula on the front. Paula was originally from Germany, loved sauerkraut, German potato salad, and dancing. She always went with Helen to SPJST Lodge 92. Thanks, Helen, for sending the notice of death to each of us. On the inside, one side was in English and other side was in German. Libbie reported that Tracy Horn called to say she is now living with her son and daughter-in-law, and her new address is 5724 Downs Drive, Fort Worth, Texas 76179. The phone number is the same. The daughter-in-law told Tracy that when they bought this house, they had a room in mind for Tracy, and now Tracy is enjoying her new home and is most happy there. Isn’t this a sweet story. Tracy’s daughter Karen had her first grandchild so she is now up north (can’t recall the state) and doing some babysitting. Darlene Tompkins reported on sending get well cards to Jo Ann Wilcox, Sharron Connelly, and Betty Krenek. Jo Ann is having a hip replacement; Sharron had some breathing problems and spent a few days in the hospital; and Betty is undergoing some treatments. We hope all are doing better, and get well wishes go out to all of them. We had one door prize, and the winner was Pat McWilliams. Winners of the 50/50 dollar games were Margaret Koenig and Darlene Tompkins. We always have happy winners. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to May celebrants - Laurie

Dawson, Alma Feil, and Agnes Saldana. May you all have many more! The theme for June will be western so everyone get out your jeans, boots, and western hats to wear - it should be a fun time! Hostesses will be Darlene Tompkins, Jo Ann Wilcox, and Anna Marie Moncrief with Libbie picking up the chicken. May hostesses Debbie Skrasek and Libbie Vrla - plus all their many helpers - were thanked. The sale was open, and we did have lots of very nice items to purchase. It was a fun event. Lola Taylor did a great job in organizing everything. Following the meeting and elephant sale, a great lunch was enjoyed. Beverly, the business manager from the church, joined us for lunch. Games were then played.

Other Anna Marie, Margaret, and Libbie enjoyed attending the luncheon and Carmelite Nuns Auxiliary annual meeting at Colonial Country Club the other day. It is always nice to go some place special, and the service is always so beautiful. We enjoyed it. I stopped in to see Camille Bolcer the other day since I was in the area. Thank goodness that I did as she told me she was moving. She has moved to the Vantage at Cityview, 6301 Overton Ridge Blvd, Fort Worth, Texas 76132-3283. She said it is a fairly new place and is beautiful. I must stop in to see her as she

His parents are Ben and Sarah Kosarek, grandparents are J.D. and Pam Kosarek, all of Waco, and great-grandmother Lil Kosarek is my sister. Lydia Alholm called the other day. She was 98 years young on April 30, and she wants to thank everyone that called or sent her a card on this special day. She said there are just too many to thank each person individually. A total of 237 of the most amazing vehicles in the Central Texas area were displayed at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall on Saturday, May 5. It was a perfect day with lots of sun, and temperatures were in the low 80s. The hall and event grounds were filled with hundreds and hundreds of spectators. The attendance throughout the day was estimated between 4,000 to 5,000 people. The Czech Heritage Celebration included several folklife demonstrations hosted by the Czech Heritage Museum. These included sauerkraut making, noodlemaking, rope making, and lace making. Jerry Haisler, Billy Havlik, and Friends entertained for everyone’s listening and dancing pleasure. Vendors, raffles, silent auction, and District Two Beseda Dancers were also part of the afternoon of fun.

Boys: A tee-shirt or tank top must be worn in and out of the pool. Please refer to page 35 of the handbook to determine your dress for camp. A suggestion for the younger campers: Place one days of clothing in a marked plastic bag. This helps getting ready in the early morning. Try to mark all clothing and belongings to be sure it comes home. Here are a few of the activities planned:

Crafts • Swimming • Canoeing High/Low Ropes Course Blobbing at the Pond BB Guns/Archery • Horseshoes Games by the LITs and Staff Music and Dancing

The only other thing I can think of to bring is a lot of energy and a great attitude for a lot of fun! One thing to hope for is enough time to do all the activities which are planned. Again, thank you, parents, for allowing us to spend quality time with your youth. Every SPJST youth is special in his or her own way, and many memories are made each year at camp, and this year will be no exception. A big thank you to all the chaperones who are taking time away from home and work to make sure our campers have a safe and a fun experience. I can’t wait to see you at Camp Kubena on June 20! Top Dance Hits featured at Proms for the last 40 years

(MS) High school is a pivotal time in a teenager’s life that is marked by many academic and social experiences, including sports games, extracurricular clubs and school dances. School dances are so iconic and intertwined with student life that they have — together with their accompanying musical score — provided a setting for popular movies like “Pretty in Pink,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” and “Never Been Kissed.” Perhaps no dance is more widely associated with high school than prom. Soon-to-be graduates have been attending proms for many decades. Music and dancing is at the centerpiece of these celebrations. Culture and Traditions in the Czech Republic By Justin Everett Lodge 24, Cyclone

Since the SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration was hosted at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall earlier this month, I thought it would be a nice idea to educate the Vestnik readers on some of the culture and traditions in the Czech Republic. There are many people here in the state of Texas who are Czech or of Czech descent. There are also quite a bit of towns in Texas that were discovered by Czech immigrants. Zabcikville, Ammannsville, and Praha - just to name a few. Did you know that the first Bohemian to arrive in Praha was Matej Novak in 1855? Lots of other Bohemian and Moravian families arrived in the town later on; especially after the Civil War. The town of Zabcikville was actually founded by Jan Zabcik, Sr. and his wife Anne Hruska in the 1800s. Both of them were from Ratibor, Moravia (in the Czech Republic) and came to Bell County because it was one of the few places in the world offering farm land at reasonable prices. With hard work and help from other Zabcik family members, the town of Zabcikville was born. Later descendants of the Zabcik’s family even helped build the well known Texas Highway 53 in 1932. Texas has tons of Czech culture and history. However, all of that culture and history was brought over here from natives of Czech Republic. Here are some interesting facts about the culture and

traditions in the Czech Republic. One fact I found fascinating was about dining etiquette at a Czech person’s home. When dining at a person’s house in the Czech Republic, stay standing until you are invited to sit down and do not begin eating until the host or hostess starts eating. The oldest woman in the house is always served first, and make sure to refuse second helpings the first time they are offered; wait for the host or hostess to insist. It is also considered good manners to compliment the food while you are eating it. This will allow the host or hostess to discuss the preparation and history of the food. A Czech meal normally consists of either beef, chicken, or pork served with potatoes or cabbage. Czechs also love their sweets such as fruit dumplings, strudels, and of course, kolaches. The weather in the summer is usually around 70 to 80 degrees. However, in the winter, temperatures can get as low as 14 degrees. The cold fronts in Texas aren’t looking so bad now! Just like Texas, farming is also a very profitable profession in the Czech Republic. Some of the main crops are wheat, barley, and corn. The cows used for farming are dairy cows and a herd usually consists of 314 per farm. Classical symphony and Bohemian/Moravian-style polka are the two most popular types of music in the Czech Republic. Czechs also had a big influence in the development of Mexican cultural music. In the 1800s, immigrants from Moravia were settling in the gulf coast area of Texas, and many of

them brought along polkas and waltzes from their homelands which began to become popular with the Mexican people who lived among them. Modern day pop, rock, bluegrass, and folk songs from America are even covered by some of the artists in the country and translated into Czech. For leisure and enjoyment, Czechs are all about the outdoor activities such as skiing, biking, hiking, and playing sports. The people also love to attend live plays and concerts. Most Czechs do not spend much time at home watching

television or relaxing on their days off. Those things are usually done at night or when the weather is bad outside. I decided to save the best part for last: Christmas traditions in the Czech Republic. If you love turkey and dressing for a Christmas meal, you might want to spend the holidays here in America. The Christmas meal in the Czech Republic usually consists of fish and potato salad with soup and dessert such as strudel. A pot of honey is also placed on the table as it is believed to guard against misery. There is also an old Christmas supersti-

tion in the Czech Republic that if you throw your shoe over your shoulder and the toe points towards the door, you will be married soon. The Czechs also attend a midnight mass on Christmas Eve and the ones who choose not to go to mass, simply stay at home and sing carols around the tree. The children do not believe in Santa Clause, but instead have another gift receiving ritual. It is believed that Ježíšek which means “Little Jesus,” brings presents during the Christmas Eve dinner and leaves them under the Christmas tree. When the children hear the bell ring (usually after the children have finished eating their main meal), that means that Ježíšek has came and left their presents under the tree. The presents are normally opened right after dinner. Heritage pride is very good thing for the Czech people to have here in Texas. However, always remember where it all began, and keep the culture alive. I am very thankful that there are many bands, museums, and festivals here in the Lone Star State to do that very thing. —SPJST—

Kolache Klobase Festival June 9 in East Bernard

This is the 28th year for the annual Czech Kolache Klobase Festival set for Saturday, June 9, 2018, at Riverside Hall in East Bernard, Texas. This event brings people together to enjoy good music, good food, and to celebrate ethnic heritage and culture. Beginning at 10:30 a.m. and continuing nonstop until 8 p.m., this year’s festival again features a first-rate lineup of entertainers. This year’s entertainers include Ennis Czech Boys, Czech and Then Some, Dujka Bros., Red Ravens, The Moravians, and The Road Company. There will again be a three-band concert at 4:30 p.m. inside the hall featuring Czech & Then Some, Dujka Bros., and Red Ravens. Dancers are also on the program this year – students from A Time to Dance Studio. A plate lunch will be available for purchase again this year featuring sausage, barbecue chicken, sauerkraut, and other trimmings. The sausage and chicken will be prepared onsite the morning of the festival by society members assuring a fresh-cooked meal. Serving will begin at 11 a.m. Drive-thru plates-to-go will again be available

from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Festival admission will not be charged for drive-thru plate customers.) Of course, there will be hundreds of kolaches for sale throughout the day. As in prior years, hamburgers and sausage sandwiches will be available for purchase in the afternoon. Arts and crafts booths will be located both inside and outside the hall. Crafts and goods of every kind will be available for sale. This is a good opportunity to shop for all types of hand-crafted items, jewelry, and clothing. A cake walk will also be available. This year there will again be entertainment for the younger set. Kid games and activities will keep the youngsters occupied. They will also enjoy a performance at 2 p.m. by students from A Time To Dance studio. The studio is under the direction and choreography of Morgan Fritz. A kolache eating contest, sponsored by KJT State Office, is at 2:30 p.m. in the pavilion. This year will again feature a drawing of a number of great prizes including handmade beautiful quilts. Drawing tickets are available from each KJT Society member and from various local businesses. They are also available by mail if so desired – contact Edwin C. Marik at 979-335-6402. Festival admission is $8 per person children 12 and under free. The admission fee covers all entertainment and music provided by bands and entertainers in the hall and outdoors in the pavilion. Parking is free, and there are plenty of handicapped parking spaces. In its 28th year, Kolache Klobase

Festival provides fun and entertainment for the entire family. The Festival Committee welcomes and encourages the wearing of Czech costumes to add a festive atmosphere and to further promote the preservation and celebration of ethnic heritage. The P.O.L.K. of A. are also urged to attend in their “red and whites” and to join in the spirit of fun and appreciation of the happy sounds of polka and waltz music. A moving flag tribute is scheduled at 3 p.m. and will recognize attending armed services veterans. This will be followed by a grand march featuring the Czech and festive costumes on parade. Massive water fans will cool the pavilion to provide a more comfortable setting for dancers and spectators. A large mesh canopy will cover a large area in front of the pavilion to protect festival visitors from the heat of the sun. For information about game or arts and crafts booths, call 979-531-9747 or srdujka@gmail.com. For general information and band schedules, call 979335-7907. Visit the festival website at www.kkfest.com for further information. Festival sponsor KJT Society No. 40 is a non-profit organization and has been in existence in East Bernard since 1905.
