standing up for our american flag
by Channing Flatt - Multi-Media Journalist
Caitlyn Petett • Lodge 107, Floresville 2018 Flag Day Essay Contest Winner Congratulations to Caitlyn Petett, 13, of Lodge 107, Floresville for submitting the winning essay, “Standing Up For Our American Flag” in SPJST’s 2018 Flag Day Essay Contest. For her efforts, Caitlyn will be receiving a $100 Visa gift card. Congratulations to Caitlyn for submitting the winning essay, and thanks to all SPJST youth for participating in this year’s contest. Stars and stripes waving in the wind remind us of our freedom. As a child, I am often told to honor and respect our flag. I do so because I am reminded of what it symbolizes by my teachers and parents; however, it wasn’t until that Saturday afternoon that I learned the true meaning of the American flag and how it was my duty to protect and honor those stars and stripes. While visiting my grandmother and helping her clean out some storage boxes, I came across an old, neatly folded American flag. I asked my grandmother where she got the flag. She bowed her head and told me that it was given to my great-grandmother when my great-grandfather passed away. It was that day that I learned
that my great-grandfather had served in the United States Coast Guard. The flag was presented to my great-grandmother upon his passing as a symbol of his service and dedication to protecting the flag and our country. My grandmother shared stories of the many adventures my great-grandfather had as part of his service to our country. It was that day that I truly understood the sacrifices made by so many men and women who still protect us to this day. I already had a great deal of respect for our flag, but now I believe it is my duty as an American to respect and honor people who have served in the military. I am going to stand up for the flag because my family did, as well as so many others.

amp Kubena has always been proud of its rich Czech history. We’re so proud, in fact, that we hired one of our support staff straight from the motherland. Tereza Wagnerut, (“Terka” for short) is Camp Kubena’s first member of the family to come from the Czech Republic, and we couldn’t be happier to have her. Terka says that even though she is a long way from home, being here brings a sense of familiarity that makes it feel like she never left. Even though the Czech Republic is very different from Ledbetter, Texas, Terka says she finds Camp Kubena’s Czech heritage very comforting. “It’s really nice to see all the Czech words around camp,” said Terka. Terka says that she could have selected from many different camps, but Camp Kubena’s Czech connection made her choice very easy. “I was attracted to the connection of the camp with the Czech Republic,” said Terka. Terka may be very far away from her home, but she says that she has many reminders of home that keep her from getting homesick. “Yeah, I miss home a little bit, but many things here remind me of home, and
camps in the Czech Republic,” said Terka. Here at Camp Kubena, we’re very proud of all our staff, but Terka is an addition that we’re especially excited about. Terka gives us an opportunity to explore our cultural heritage from the eyes of someone who’s had a lifetime of cultural experience in the Czech Republic. This summer is going to be very special to Camp Kubena, and with Terka’s cultural enlightenment, it’s going to be that much more memorable! —SPJST—

Editor’s Note
Happy 121st Birthday, SPJST! SPJST’s roots run deep in the history of the American fraternal benefit system. During the 1880s and 1890s, many Texans of Czech ancestry joined the nationwide fraternal order known as the Cesko-Slovanska Podporujici Spolecnost (C.S.P.S.). The organization is recognized today as the Czechoslovak Society of America (CSA). In 1897, there were 27 C.S.P.S. lodges in Texas. Founded in 1854 in St. Louis, Missouri, by Czechoslovak immigrants, C.S.P.S was organized to provide security for its widows and children upon their death. C.S.P.S. truly laid the groundwork for a modern fraternal in this country, which served as a model for many other fraternal benefit societies in America organized in later years. In spite of the rapid growth of C.S.P.S. in Texas, considerable discontent existed among the members from Texas and the Midwest. The primary concern was that C.S.P.S. insurance premium guidelines favored the industrial workers in the eastern part of the United States. Those workers had a much higher mortality rate than the people living in Texas. As such, the premiums were considered to be overly expensive. Texans Take Decisive Action Texas C.S.P.S. members I.J. Gallia and J.R. Kubena led the efforts to reform the national C.S.P.S. Shortly after the 1896 C.S.P.S. convention, Texas Czechs met in La Grange, Texas, and set about the task of forming a new fraternal organization. Augustin Haidusek, Frank Cihal, and J.R. Kubena were charged with the responsibility of drafting a constitution. In March 1897, the constitution was
submitted to the Texas C.S.P.S. lodges for their consideration. Seven of the 25 C.S.P.S. lodges approved the constitution and withdrew from the older society. Official records indicate that SPJST (Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas) started operations on July 1, 1897, with 866 members and 25 charter lodges. SPJST received its state charter on August 12, 1897. SPJST’s first base of operations was located in Fayetteville, Texas. The central figure in administering the affairs of the Society, Secretary J.R. Kubena who is known as the “Daddy of the SPJST,” had his business located in Fayetteville. Until his death in 1938, Kubena administered the affairs of SPJST out of a single room in his general store. For 121 years, SPJST lodges and members have worked hard to establish the Society’s reputation as a proactive, nonsectarian fraternal organization. Thank you for your membership and support!

SPJST Insurance, Thank you very much for allowing me to be the recipient of the 2018 SPJST General Freshman Scholarship award. With this scholarship, I can pursue my studies with some financial ease. I do not see this scholarship as just financial assistance, but I also see it as an achievement and motivation for me to pursue my long-term goals in life. With the help from this scholarship, I will be able to complete my studies at the University of Houston at Victoria and graduate with a degree in kinesiology. My long-term goal to become an occupational therapist is possible thanks to SPJST Insurance. Again, thank you for this generous award and for insuring and enriching my life. Please help me to raise $2,500 for the Joe Joe Bear Golf tournament. Joe Joe Bear is a charity that gives teddy bears to children with life-threatening illnesses throughout North America. Every year, thousands of children get hospitalized with life-threatening illnesses. As they endure the stress of their situation, their immune systems start to work against them. During the day, they have their families but when evening comes, they are alone in these cold rooms and their stress levels raise making them even more vulnerable. With this teddy bear, they are able to know God and their family are with them, allowing their stress to lower and their immune systems to start working again. These teddy bears are in high demand by hospitals. For every $5 you donate, one child receives a teddy bear. So far, Joe Joe Bear has given over 30,000 bears. Your donation does make a difference. Go to the link below, then click on sponsor me.

Lodge 18, Elgin reports on activities The hot days of summer are here. Mike Mogonye is still recuperating from his illness. Get well wishes to you, Mike. Charles and FL are working on the cooler. After 40 years, it needs help. The July 15 polka dance has been canceled. Mollie B has a dance the same day, therefore we don’t think we would have a very good crowd. I wish we had the support for our local bands that Mollie B has. If attendance keeps going down, how long can our local lodges keep going? The bands have expenses, the hall has expenses, and the bills have to be paid. We had the Moravians on Sunday, June 10, 2018. What a great group! They really did share some great music. I have to say all the young bands are great. We need to support them so that we can keep polka/waltz music going. They do a great job with country music, too. When you come to a polka dance you get it all - polka, waltz, and two-
Wednesday, June 27, 2018 step. What a great way to get your exercise. On Sunday, June 10, we also had District Two Beseda Dancers from Lodges 47, Seaton and 20, Granger. They performed and did a great job. When we had trouble getting their music to play on the PA system, the Moravians took over and put their music on their equipment. Thank you, guys! That is real fraternalism! We had some new faces at the dance, and they were all impressed with the dance floor. We have one of the best dance floors in Texas. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Doris Brian. There were no May anniversaries. Lodge 185, New Braunfels youth donates hair to make a difference Lodge 185, New Braunfels Youth Club member Lily Howard donated nine inches of her hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths for the first time. She is the daughter of District Seven President Donnie and District Seven Youth Counselor April Howard. Lily’s hair will help make a wig to benefit a woman who has lost her hair due to cancer treatment. Lily received this letter of appreciation. Dear Lily, On behalf of Pantene Beautiful Lengths, with heartfelt appreciation, we thank you for your very kind and selfless donation to our program. Your donation will help a woman who has lost her hair due to cancer treatment, and together we can continue to help improve the lives of women battling cancer. Your donation will help restore a sense of normalcy back into her life so that she can fight the disease with confidence, and we hope that it will inspire many others to support Pantene Beautiful Lengths’ efforts. Many of the women who receive these wigs say that wearing a real-hair wig makes them feel like themselves again. When you donate to the cause, you’re helping to make that happen.
As you may already know, it takes a minimum of eight ponytails to make one Pantene Beautiful Lengths wig. Your donation will join at least seven others and transformed into a high quality, real-hair wig by HairUWear, our campaign partner and the leading global producer of real-hair wigs. We are also honored to work closely with the American Cancer Society. The American Cancer Society distributes Pantene Beautiful Lengths wigs at no cost to female cancer patients in need through its extensive network of nationwide wig banks. What if we could create more Pantene Beautiful Lengths wigs than ever before? Since the program began in 2006, Pantene Beautiful Lengths has gained a passionate following, with generous hair donations being the driving force behind the cause. Pantene has donated millions of dollars to make beautiful, healthy hairwigs from these hair donations. If you are interested in finding out more about this program and the incredible difference that it is making, please visit www.Pantene.com/beautifullengths. Together, we can help bring some joy into the lives of women living with cancer. —SPJST—

dom. Mr. Vodenka, currently a successful construction business owner living in South Dakota, will be making his first trip to Texas to share his family’s story about escaping from Communist Czechoslovakia in search of their “American Dream.” Peter relates his coming to America with the reasons our ancestors came - for freedom and better opportunities. They spent 10 years planning their escape and, in 1983 at age 27, he took his wife and two small children on vacation to the Communist country of Yugoslavia, where they successfully escaped across the border to the Western country of Austria. After spending three months in a refugee camp applying for entry into America, they arrived in the United States with $600 in their pockets, the clothes on their backs, and no English skills. The author is also a well-known motivational speaker, strongly drawing on his life experiences living half of his life under government oppression and dictatorship, and the other half living free in the United States of America. This will be a fascinating true story to hear after our individual 4th of July Inde-
pendence Day celebrations. Two other presentations are also part of the program. Clint Williams, current webmaster of the Texas Research Ramblers Genealogical Society, will discuss “Helping Others Get Restarted on Their Genealogical Journey.” A journey can be halted because of a lack of information or a lack of knowledge or tools needed to proceed on the journey. Mr. Williams will help restart your genealogical journey if you have hit a bump in the road or detour in your research. After retirement, Gladys Valchar, TCGS Secretary, began making plans to take her “bucket list” trip to the Czech Republic to visit the places in Bohemia and Moravia from which her ancestors came. Through her presentation “My Moravian Odyssey,” she will share how her two-week vacation turned into one of six weeks after suffering a fall and breaking her leg and how she navigated three hospitals in Moravia before being able to fly home with a rescue nurse. A silent auction will be held, and TCGS members are reminded to bring items for the silent auction table. A
sales table, featuring TCGS publications and Czech gift items, will also be available. Registration fees paid on/before July 12, are $40 for TCGS members/$45 for non-members. Fees paid after July 12, are $45 for TCGS members/$50 for non-members. Registration at the door is $55 for both members and non-members. The registration fee includes a catered lunch. Registration forms are available on the TCGS website (http://txczgs.org). To register by credit card, go to https://squareup.com/store/TXCZGS/it em/registration. You may also send a check payable to TCGS and mail it with your registration form to Carolyn Holub, 2741 Falcon Way, Midlothian, Texas 76065. For more information, contact Carolyn at 214-577-0029 or
cholub1088@gmail.com The next TCGS speaker event will be held in Caldwell on September 29 and will focus on Texas Czechs and World War I. —SPJST—
