In loving memory of Auntie Evelyn (Schiller) Henson 4/30/1925 - 6/22/2018
M
y dear, sweet aunt, age 93, passed away last week. She had told me several times over the past years that I would need to get her funeral together when the time comes, and she shared details of her expectations. She was always a model of vitality and a big part of my life, but I never thought the day would actually come to say goodbye to this precious woman. Her grandson and I got together the day after her passing to review her important documents. We located her life insurance policies along with a complete handwritten plan for her arrangements. She specified the funeral home, the officiant, her attire (even saying where it was hanging in her closet), the color of her casket and flowers, and the service details. And, she had life insurance to cover all of the costs. Talk about a moment of peace and comfort. She had everything planned . . . and life insurance to pay for all of her plans. All we had to do was meet with the funeral director and make a few phone calls to put her plans into action. Her out-of-state life insurance policy made us jump through a few paperwork hoops, but our biggest blessing was Auntie’s SPJST life insurance certificate. What a smooth process it was for the claim to be paid. I hear great feedback about our SPJST Claims Department, and I can now personally attest to its efficiency. What is the take-away? Auntie’s planning - or pre-planning - gave my family and me so much comfort. The
fact that she had the hindsight and sacrificed putting money aside for life insurance gave us peace of mind. For the sake of our spouses, children, grandchildren, siblings, and friends, I urge everyone to call an SPJST Sales Agent and buy life insurance. Today. It is our responsibility to make arrangements for and pay for our own funerals, burial, and internment now - long before it is necessary for others to do it on our behalf. It is unfair, I believe, to leave the funeral and burial details to those we love. It is also unfair to leave them with the bill in the midst of their grief. May you and your dear ones enjoy long and healthy lives, and may you sleep well at night knowing that what you do now will relieve the people you love the most from having to do after you die.

If you are the type of person who has been looking for a fun activity to get out of the house, Mollie B and Ted Lange have your cure for cabin fever. The fire department was indeed grateful for this generous donation. It is always fun to have Jesse and Linda visit with our lodge. Next Meeting—July 9 The next meeting will be Monday, July 9. Our rent payment to the church for use of the facilities was given to Mary Ann Krivanek for delivery. Sunshine person Darlene Tompkins reported on sending a get well card to Sharron Connelly. Jo Ann Wilcox and Betty Krenek thanked all for the many get well cards they received. It was nice to have Jo Ann, Betty, and Sharron back with us. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to June celebrants - Lorraine Cross, Joyce Helgeson, and Harold Strand. May you have many more. The “going out to eat” luncheon was discussed. We will again meet and eat at Golden Corral on 3517 Alta Mere Drive in Fort Worth. Since July 4 falls on the first Wednesday, we will not meet until on the second Wednesday which will be July 11 at 11 a.m. If anyone would like to car pool, meet at St. Thomas Church at 10:30 a.m. You may want to call someone that lives on the north side if you want to car pool. The theme colors will be red, white, and blue even though it will be after July 4. Libbie reported she stopped in to see Camille Bolcer who now lives at The Vantage, 6301 Overton Ridge Boulevard, Room 2001. She wasn’t feeling good so I didn’t stay to visit. I did notice that she no longer has her sewing machine, but still had the ironing board which she uses as a desk and to play cards on. Mary Agnes Ward told me to let Camille know that her brother, Father Ward, goes to The Vantage to give communion. Camille earlier had asked me about Annie Whitsell as both always went to St. Paul’s Church. They each had their own seat, one on the left and other on right side. Annie did return my call and asked about everyone, and sends greeting to all. She said she now wears contacts, the kind you can sleep in - said she can read better with them.

Lodge 84, Dallas shares June meeting scenes
Lodge 84, Dallas members met Monday, June 18, 2018, for their monthly meeting at Barbec’s Restau-
Her next door neighbor is her full time caregiver. She said her daily routine is “eat, pray and watch television.” She still goes to Mass each Sunday and still delivers communion with help. We had two door prizes with winners being Sharron Connelly and Lorraine Cross. Today was Sharron’s lucky day as she and Helen Skrasek were the winners of the two 50/50 dollar games. Being a winner is always so much fun! Thanks went out to June hostesses of Darlene Tompkins, Anna Marie Moncrief, and Jo Ann Wilcox as they did a great job. Also thanks went out to Betty and Stanley Krenek for picking up the chicken and to Lola Taylor for the table decorations which were western hats. It was a western theme, and so many wore boots, jeans, and western shirts. For our entertainment, seven of our members did three different line dances, and they were good. Thanks, ladies! We enjoyed your performance. I heard that they do line dancing at the senior center in north Fort Worth. Darlene Tompkins read a note from Ella Johnson, daughter of Paula Arsenault, thanking the Club for all the cards sent to her mother before she passed away. She wrote that Paula so enjoyed being our member. It was discussed that we have had three homebound members to die recently, and we need to make memorial gifts in their memory. Anna Marie suggested masses be said at St. Thomas Church in memory of her aunt Aggie Reznicek. Helen Skrasek suggested a donation be made to Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Paula, and Mary Ann Krivanek will check with Pauline Walker’s family as to their wishes. Other News Following the meeting, I picked up Jerry Milan, president of the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in
rant. Members also enjoyed a Dutch treat meal. —Submitted by Anne Scott Cowan, Reporter
Temple. Tracy Horn had called me that as she was moving out of her house, she found a Czech pray book which belonged to her father, a cabbage shredder, cotton scale, seeder, and other things from the family farm in Bryan - and she wanted to donate the items to the Museum. Her son was home so we loaded everything into my car and delivered the items to Jerry so that he can take them to Temple. Both Tracy and her son commented that they have stopped at the Museum on their way to Austin to see the grandson before, and they will now look forward to stopping in again to look at their history. Today, Helen, Debbie, and Gary Skrasek and I attended the 95th birthday party for Lorraine Cross at Redbud Hall, Fort Worth Botanical Gardens. It was a beautiful party and most enjoyable - the food and cake were wonderful. Helen said that she has known Lorraine for many years. All of Lorraine’s family were there, even someone from New York. Helen, Debbie, and I sit with Lorraine at our meetings. My friend, Joyce Ehrenberger of Charlotte, North Carolina (Dallas Sokol and SPJST Lodge 130, Dallas member), came to Dallas to attend the Sokol Slet. Her son Joseph and wife from Baltimore also came, and they left on the following Monday. As Joyce had work friends and nursing friends she wanted to see, I went to Dallas on Monday and stayed with her until Wednesday when we came to Fort Worth. She had a busy schedule, but I enjoyed everything. We even went to the Doctor’s Hospital she used to work at. Joyce was one of five girls who went to nursing school together and have stayed in touch ever since. While in Dallas, we had lunch with two of these girls, one being Evelyn Cechan who was Joyce’s roommate. Evelyn’s son Ron brought her as she lives in an assisted living center at Allen. One day,
we drove to Fairfield to meet with her cousins from Houston; on another day, we drove to Red Oak to meet with the husband of a friend she was in nursing school with and with whom Joyce and Joe used to travel with. The wife died last year, and Joyce was not able to attend the funeral so we met at the cemetery then had lunch at the Country Kitchen. One day, we attended the Ennis Sewing Circle meeting of which Joyce is still a member. While in Fort Worth, we had a klobase sandwich lunch at Sokol where Joyce was the guest of honor and special guest being Joe Pokladnik (Dallas Sokol) who now lives in the Fort Worth area with his daughter. All the Sokol members that Joyce knew were in attendance. We did Saturday night Father’s Day dinner with my nephew Mike and Mari Kosarek in Arlington, and a Mexican dinner with my sister Lil. Joyce said Mexican food in Charlotte is not the same as in Texas. It was a busy and fun time. Don’t forget, next time we get together will be on the second Wednesday, July 11 at 11 a.m. at Golden Corral at 3517 Alta Mere Drive. Looking forward to seeing everyone, and don’t forget come hungry as Golden Corral is allyou-can-eat! So Until, Keep Smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

“Pay attention . . . or we may lose our freedom.” “Freedom . . . guard it with your life, America,” often warned well-known Texas Gulf Coast fraternalist and late SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje member Karel Matejka, Sr. of El Campo, Texas. Karel was only 16 years old when the Vimperk, Sumava, Czechoslovakian Freedom Fighter was imprisoned by the Nazis following Germany’s occupation of the Sudentenland at the beginning of World War II. He spent almost eight years of his youth as a forced laborer in Hitler’s infamous concentration camps. He was freed in 1946 by General George S. Patton’s United States Army and returned to his Czechoslovakian Karel Matejka homeland where he opened a bakery and grocery store. Karel became outspokenly critical of Post War Russian-imposed Communism that was being forced on the freedom-loving Czechs. Czechoslovakia’s pre-World War II democratic government had been patterned after the United States of America. After learning in 1948 that his business was to be nationalized by the Communists and the impending threat of imprisonment again “as an enemy of the State,” Karel and his wife, Gizela, escaped overnight to western Germany. Bishop John L. Morkovsky learned of their plight as displaced European refugees and arranged for the Matejkas to come to Houston in 1950 under the National Catholic Refugees Program. Karel and his wife were warmly welcomed into the greater Houston American-Czech community including the old SPJST Lodge 88, Houston on Studewood Drive. He was active in the Houston Sokol movement and other benevolent Slavic organizations such as Western Fraternal Life. The gifted singer and musician had a vast repertoire of authentic Czech folk songs. The accomplished accor-
dionist and drummer also loved to polka dance. He formed a Houston band which played at many special celebrations including a downtown El Campo street dance and “All Nations Festival” in 1962 when the city became “Capital of Texas for 24 hours” as designated by “Governor-for-a-Day” Culp Krueger, President Pro Tempore of the Texas Senate at that time and owner of KULP Radio and the El Campo Leader-News-Svoboda. A member of the SPJST Lodge 88 Choral Group and Drama Club, he was cast in major roles of many Czech language divadlos — theatrical presentations including operettas such as Kmoch’s “Muziky, Muziky” and other entertaining Czechoslovakian dramas and comedies staged at Lodge 88 and in other Texas communities. Karel was honored in 1999 as one of the founders of the Saints Cyril and Methodius Slavic Heritage Festival, which is one of Houston’s oldest ethnic festivals. He often expressed his worry that many Americans are apathetic about the precious liberty he and his wife finally enjoyed in Texas. “We must pay attention or one day, we may lose our freedom here,” cautioned Karel on July 4, 2003, when he single-handedly staged an Independence Day event in El Campo after learning no local public observance was scheduled. One of his happiest days was on November 12, 1958, when he became a naturalized United States citizen. His Czech citizenship had been revoked by the Communists, but President Vaclav Havel re-instated it in 2000 so Karel held dual citizenship during his final years. Karel passed away on Friday, June 2, 2006, on his 83rd birthday. Editor’s Note: This article was originally submitted by Chuck and Joanna Schwartzkopf of Lodge 40, El CampoHillje. “Karel was a very dear person who went through a lot for his freedom,” says Lodge 88, Houston member Mary Krippner who asks that the article be rerun around Independence Day. “We often don’t value freedom as much as we should. I love America, and I treasure Brother Karel’s values.” —SPJST—

Space Volcanoes You may know about Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano that continues to erupt in past weeks; lava oozes out of craters and makes its way to the ocean. Did you know there is such a thing as Space Valcanoes? For years, most scientists figured that Jupiter’s moon Io didn’t have a lot going on. Many moons are ‘geologically dead.’ That means that they don’t have things like earthquakes, newly forming mountains, or volcanoes. But as it turns out, these scientists were dead wrong about Io. NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft took the first close up pictures of Io in 1979. The pictures showed a massive plume erupting from its surface into space. Not only did Io have volcanoes— they were active! This was the first time an erupting volcano had been found anywhere besides Earth.
Activity: Now below draw and color your idea what a space volcano would look like.
There are volcanoes all around our solar system. But only a few places besides Earth — like some of the moons of Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune — have active ones today. Mars is home to the largest volcano in our solar system — Olympus Mons. At 14 miles high, it is also the largest mountain in our solar system. It is almost three times taller than Mount Everest! Nobody has seen an eruption on Mars, but some scientists think there could still be some in the future. Mars is covered with massive fields of lava flows and tall volcanic mountains left over from a time when Mars was a hotbed of geologic activity.

2017 - 2018 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance Fourth Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the June 2017 to May 2018 youth year. This is total merit points for the 2017-2018 youth year thusfar. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended from June 2017 to May 2018. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities. What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards. Contest Dates June 1, 2017 to May 31, 2018 Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Fraternal Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Youth Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Fraternal Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest. Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Frater-
nal Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal. Merit Point Awards First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division. Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through fifth place awards to qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The junior and teen with the most points in each district also receive recognition. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first place will receive the award. Junior and Teen Point Awards First Place $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place - $20 Fourth Place - $15 Fifth Place $10 What is an Active Youth Member? A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the
completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school. Dist Ldg Name Pts Mtgs Dist Ldg

In Memory of Evelyn Henson Evelyn Lillie (Schiller) Henson passed away Friday, June 22, 2018, in a Temple care facility. Evelyn was born April 30, 1925, in Red Ranger, Texas, to Gus and Fanny (Luksik) Schiller. She attended Thompson, Stringtown, and Oscar Schools. After the seventh grade, Evelyn’s help was needed at home where she worked with her mother raising her four Evelyn Henson younger siblings Edwin, Gus, and twins Johnnie and Martha. She also assisted her father working in the cotton and corn fields. The love of her life, William E. Henson, Jr., was a private serving in the United States Army in World War II. He was wounded in Normandy, France, on June 12, 1944, and received the Purple Heart Medal. He returned home to Evelyn’s care on September 26, 1944. They were married on November 29, 1944, by Pastor Roy A. Langston at First Methodist Church in Temple. Their reception and dance were held at Tom Sefcik Hall in Seaton. The couple lived in Stringtown until they moved to Heidenheimer in 1969. After 48 years of marriage, William passed away on October 29, 1993. Evelyn was a wonderful woman who was loved, is missed, and will always be
cherished. “Auntie,” as she liked to be called by her nieces and nephews, was an amazing aunt, grandmother, sister, mom, and a seamstress and quilter like no other. She was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing, crafts, cooking, and antiques. Evelyn was the hairdresser and barber for all of her family, neighbors, and friends. She appreciated her Czech heritage - listening to the music, cooking the dishes, and speaking the language. Evelyn had a green thumb and was passionate about growing flowers, fruits, and vegetables. Each year, she canned many jars of fruits, vegetables, jams, and jellies and shared them with her family and friends. She was a very giving, loving person and never hesitated to lend a helping hand to anyone. Evelyn was a member of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone. She served on a committee in the 1980s cleaning Flag Hall after Friday and Saturday night dances, wedding receptions, and community events. She was also a longtime member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband William E. Henson; brother Edwin Schiller in 1979; brother Gus Schiller in 1989; brother Johnnie Schiller in 1992; brother Rudolph Schiller in 2009; and daughter-in-law Mae Schiller in 2016. Evelyn leaves to cherish her memory son Albert Schiller; sister Martha and brother-in-law Milton Zavodny; grandson Randy Schiller; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. The family received visitors from 9

Czech Film Night Tuesday, July 10 at The Beltonian: Želary 2003 Academy Award nominee By Susan Chandler Executive Director Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center Želery is one of those films that makes me wish it were holographic. The scenery is so beautiful and the music is so moving that I want to be surrounded by it. This movie is best viewed on a big screen, with excellent sound. If I could have smelled the herbs, flowers and berry fields, the clean mountain air, the chimney smoke and even the animals; if I could have experienced it with all my other senses, I would have been even happier. It is the story of Eliska (Ana

Geislerova), a medical student in Prague during World War II. The Czechs were suffering under the hand of Reinhard Heydrich, Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, and architect of the Holocaust. She meets Joza (Gyorgy Cserhalmi) by chance one night at the hospital while there with her lover, who is his surgeon. Eliska and the surgeon work with the resistance, an underground network trying to save lives from Heydrich’s cruelties. When the network is exposed, she is sent alone to the country among rural folk to hide. As she adapts from city to country life and grapples with the risk she brings to the village, a romance quietly grows. The story is set in Moravia, in the Wallachia region of the Czech Republic. This area, which includes the cities of Olomouc and Ostrava, is the ancestral home of the majority of Texas Czechs. It is in the Beskydy Mountains, foothills of the Carpathians. The mountains are old and rounded, lush and green - similar to the Smokies here in the United

States. If you have visited there, you understand. The 2003 film, directed by Ondrej Trojan was nominated for the 2004 Academy Award as Best Foreign Language Film. The story is adapted from two works by Czech novelist Kveta Legatova, Želery and Jozova Hanule. Although Ms. Legatova, whose life spanned from 1919 to 2012, only found fame late in life, Želery was a literary sensation when it hit the bookstores only a few years before the film was made. In a 2004 interview with Radio Prague, Ms. Legatova spoke of her work. “Želery was written 30 or 40 years ago - the basic stories - though, I had to make changes. But Jozova Hanule was written now - in the 1990s, when I was already in my 80s. I decided to write Hanule based on a competition put forward by the Milos Havel Fund, promoting the writing of film scripts. I thought ‘Should I apply?’ Then I took a story from Zelary the end of World War II and expanded it into the new book.” Ms. Legatova was born Kveta Legatova, in Podolí u author of Želery. Brna, a village just outside of Brno, also in Moravia and a few hours north of Vienna, Austria. But, she taught school in the Wallachia, and her characters are studies of people she knew there. “The characters there have very sharp contours, (a feature) which elsewhere is not so well-defined - or doesn’t come to a head.” She spoke about her love for writing. “If I were to talk till midnight about the gallery of potential characters and you were able to choose from among your colleagues, your students, your neighbors, you would uncover one story after another. It interests me so much. If I could only write it all! If one

Admission is free (donations for the Museum will be appreciated). Rated R (nudity, violence, adult themes). Czech audio with English subtitles. Gourmet concessions will be available including two varieties of Czech beer. “Mr. Cserhalmi, burly and soft-spoken and Ms. Geislerova are both subtle, serious actors, and they handle the relationship between their characters with patience and precision. Mr. Trojan is similarly patient, allowing the story to ripen and evolve according to the seasonal rhythms of the countryside rather than marching it from one incident to the next. His camera wanders around the rugged, beautiful landscape, across the mountainsides, and through the forests, as Zelary’s human tableau comes quietly to life.” — A.O. From Communist Czechoslovakia to Freedom in America
In June 1942, Lidice, a village in Czechoslovakia, ceased to exist. Lidice had been implicated in the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, the Nazi controller of Bohemia and Moravia, and Hitler’s order was given to “teach the Czechs a final lesson of subservience and humility.” On May 27, 1942, Heydrich was attacked by British-trained freedom fighters - one born in the current Czech Republic and the other, Jozef Gabcik, born in Slovakia. A grenade attack on his car left him fatally wounded, and he died on June 4. Hitler had always had a high opinion of Heydrich. Some believe that Hitler was grooming Heydrich to succeed him and the Fuehrer said that “he has a heart of iron.” Energetic and efficient, Heydrich brought a reign of terror to Czechoslovakia and his death enraged Hitler. “Hitler was frantic with rage and, characteristically, what he called for was not justice but vengeance. He ordered the instant execution of 30,000 Czechs as a reprisal.” Richard Livingstone. The man appointed to take over from Heydrich, Karl Frank, pointed out that the loss of 30,000 would have a severe impact on the Czech labor force. Hitler took this on board and changed the figure to the arrest of 10,000. On the night of May 27, Heinrich Himmler, head of the SS, ordered Frank to shoot 100 “intellectuals” that night. Over the next few days, 3,188 Czechs were arrested of whom 1,357 were executed, while 657 died in police custody. However, none of this satisfied Hitler, though he had recognized the fact that 30,000 executions would have a negative impact on the labor force in Czechoslovakia. On June 8, a state funeral was held for Heydrich. On the next day, Frank received an order from Hitler which stated that a small community near an industrial center was to be selected and wiped out as punishment. Therefore, there would be no impact on the Czech labor force, but Hitler would have gained his desire for revenge. But why was Lidice chosen? One of the men who assassinated Heydrich had links to Lidice (the assassins were all killed). Also the Gestapo had intercepted what they deemed to be a “suspicious” note that contained the name Lidice. In fact, it was another Lidice in Czechoslovakia – but this only came to light afterwards, once the arrangements had been made to wipe out Frank’s chosen target - Lidice near Prague. Lidice was about 10 miles from
Texas Czech Genealogical Society will welcome Peter Vodenka, nationally acclaimed author and inspirational speaker, to its summer conference, “Life is a Journey, Not a Destination,” on Saturday, July 21, 2018, where he will be the keynote speaker. The event will be held at the Caldwell Civic/Visitors’ Center, 103 West Highway 21, Caldwell, Texas, beginning with registration and light refreshments at 8 a.m. The event ends around 4 p.m. Imagine life without the right to travel, without freedom of speech or without being able to choose your occupation. Peter Vodenka lived that life for many years before escaping communism to find a new home in America. He will relate in detail the harrowing experience he and his family endured and the feeling of exhilaration that they felt when they set foot on American soil, where they would experience the American dream, built on hard work and love of country. His passion now is to implore Americans to respect their freedoms and stop taking them for granted . . . He reminds his audience that America is the greatest nation on earth; his belief is based not through book reading or study, but through what he has lived. This will be Peter’s first visit to Texas. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear him speak and to purchase his book, Journey for Freedom, which will be available for sale at the event. Other speakers will be Clint Williams and Gladys Valchar. Gladys will describe her “bucket list” trip to the land of her ancestors, which lasted six weeks rather than the two she had signed up for. “My Moravian Odyssey” is an unbelievable story that you will enjoy and remember. Mr. Clint William, webmaster of the Texas Research Ramblers Genealogical Society will discuss “Helping Others
Prague. The village was off any main road so the sighting of any German troops in mass was rare. With 100,000 German troops in Czechoslovakia, German troops had been seen in Lidice but only in small numbers. On June 4, the day of Heydrich’s death, German troops entered Lidice, the Gestapo questioned people and houses were ransacked. Then they suddenly left leaving the villagers confused as to why they had done this. On June 9, they returned in the evening. Most of the villagers had gone to bed. They were woken and made to gather in the village square. Women and children were put on one side and men and boys over 15 were put on the other side of the square. The men and boys were put in farm buildings while the women and children were locked into the local school. After the villagers had been locked away, military police ransacked the homes once again and took anything of value. All farming tools were taken, and cattle were herded up. Anything of the remotest value was taken. At 5 o’clock the next day, the 198 women and 98 children were put onto lorries and driven away. They were transferred to Ravensbruck concentration camp. Those children who were considered suitable for ‘Germanisation’ were picked out and given to SS families. Those who were not considered suitable were scheduled to be sent to the camps. The men were brought out of the farm houses and lined up in front of mattresses laid against a wall. The execution squad brought them out in batches of 10. One hundred seventythree were shot. Those men who lived
in Lidice but who were on shift work at the local factories when the arrests were made, were rounded up later – a further 19 were shot. Those men who were in Lidice at the time visiting relatives and friends, but who were not from Lidice, were also shot. The village was then destroyed – literally wiped off of the map. Houses were destroyed, orchards dug up, and the graveyard desecrated. Even pet dogs were shot. When this was done, pioneer troops were sent in to plough the land flat. Seemingly nothing was left of the village, not even the outline. The whole episode was filmed by the SS. Of the women, only 143 are known to have somehow survived Ravensbruck, the Nazi concentration camp for women. Of the 98 children (who, owing to “transport difficulties,” were separated from their mothers on June 12), 17 are known to have survived by being selected for ‘Germanisation.’ They returned to Czechoslovakia after the war. Those children not considered suitable were gassed at Chemnitz on the orders of Adolf Eichmann. —SPJST—
