The new royalty court was crowned on Saturday, August 4 at SPJST State Youth Achievement Day held at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. All State YAD results will appear in next week’s Vestnik.

tate Youth Achievement Day was Saturday, August 4 at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. Congratulations to all youth who participated in this spectacular annual event! We will feature the results, winning essay, speeches, and scenes from State Youth Achievement Day in next week’s Věstník. State YAD is a bittersweet day for the outgoing royalty court, and this year was no exception. The 2017-2018 State Royalty Court went above and beyond their duties and represented SPJST and their Czech heritage well over the past year. A very special thank you to 2017-2018 State King Austen Holland, State Queen April Dvorak, State Duke Maison Holland, and State Duchess Madison Holland, all of Lodge 25, Ennis. These young people are very dedicated and devoted to SPJST. And, special appreciation is extended to their parents and grandparents for their efforts and assistance throughout the year. New Reign Begins Congratulations to the 2018-2019 SPJST State Royalty! They are King Nash Campbell of Lodge 24, Cyclone; Duke Tyson Bilbrey of Lodge 47, Seaton; and Queen Grace Lewis and Duchess Dakota Kienow, both of Lodge 9, Snook. State Queen Grace followed in her brother Robert’s and sister Emily’s footsteps as Robert was State King in 2011, and Emily was State Queen in 2012. Like last year’s State Royalty, the newly crowned State Royalty Court has deep SPJST roots. King Nash’s mother Kim (Schneider) Campbell and Queen Grace’s mother Loree (Kovar) Lewis were active youth club members and participated in all aspects of the SPJST Youth Program. The moms currently serve as

youth leaders in their local lodges - Kim at Lodge 24, Cyclone and Loree at Lodge 9, Snook. Duchess Dakota’s mother Amy (Gaas) Gill was also active in the SPJST Youth Program, and Dakota’s grandmother Karen Gaas is a past Lodge 9, Snook youth leader. Duke Tyson’s mother Chelsea currently serves as assistant youth leader at Lodge 47, Seaton. When I was a little girl attending meetings and events at Lodge 24, Cyclone, I remember Nash’s great-grandparents the late E.J. and Leveda Geistman. They worked hard and were very dedicated to Lodge 24. Mr. Geistman served as lodge president and was also a member of the state SPJST Publication Committee. Mrs. Geistman was a sales agent. How proud they both must be knowing that their SPJST heritage continues strong in their greatgrandson. We also have a very happy and proud SPJST Home Office staff member. Nash’s grandmother and Claims Specialist Margaret Campbell is beaming! Best wishes to King Nash, Queen Grace, Duke Tyson, and Duchess Dakota on a successful, fun-filled year!

Readers Write Dime Box Black Bridge Festival set for October 5, 6 Dime Box Black Bridge Festival and 41st Annual Mini-Marathon (10K, 5K, and 2-mile run, 2-mile walk) is Friday, October 5 and Saturday, October 6, 2018. The weekend will feature a barbecue cookoff, parade, craft booths, classic cars, quilt display, live music, and a street dance. Friday, October 5 begins at 6 p.m. with a freewill donation chili/hot dog supper, music, 42 tournament, Little Mister and Little Miss Black Bridge pageant, and a street dance. Texas Czech Festivals Westfest 2018 in West - Westfest downtown parade kicks off on Saturday, September 1 at 10 a.m. SPJST members, if you find yourself wanting to do something on Labor Day weekend, come out and support our SPJST State Royalty. They will be riding in the Corvettes during the parade, and District Three has both SPJST parade floats entered this year for their youth and parents to participate in the parade. After the parade,

you can head over to the Westfest fairgrounds and have your pick of lunch from a number of food booths. The State Royalty will be introduced to the audience at the amphitheater in the afternoon. SPJST will also have a booth under the amphitheater so please stop by and say hello. For more information about Westfest 2018, you can go to www.westfest.com. Houston Slavic Heritage Festival The festival is Sunday, September 30 from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Come out and enjoy traditional ethnic food, dancing, music, singing, prizes, local vendors, and fun for the whole family. SPJST will have a booth at the festivities. Stop by and visit us. The festival is held at the Knights of Columbus Hall and Grounds, located at 607 East Whitney Street, Houston, Texas 77022. Decorum at SPJST Lodge Meetings Meetings are an important part of SPJST’s business and social planning. In conducting the business of our Society, it’s important to show respect — to each other and to the fraternal ideals we seek to advance. The following is a suggested guideline to some of the things we can do to ensure that our lodge meetings provide an inviting platform for members to exchange their views and achieve solutions benefitting the lodge and organization.

• Come to the meeting with a positive attitude. • Treat members with respect before, during and after the lodge meeting. • Be prompt in arriving to the meeting and turn cell phones off or to vibrate. • If you must take urgent calls on the cell phone, please take your conversation outside. • Maintain your dignity and present yourself in a positive manner. • Have a strong agenda. This is part of being prepared. The President should have a good, strong agenda so that he or she can stay on track. If discussion gets off tracks, it is up to the President to get back on track. • Talk one at a time, waiting to be recognized by the President. • Limit side conversations. • Be patient when listening to others speak and do not interrupt them. • Members need to stay on the topic being discussed.

District One seeks “trunk-or-treat” hosts for fall fun day on October 21 in New Tabor Dear District One Members, Save the date . . . the District One Fall Fun Day is Sunday, October 21, 2018, at Lodge 17, New Tabor Hall at 3 p.m. Youth and adults are encouraged to dress in Halloween costumes. One of the fun activities that we are planning is “trunk-or-treat.” We are looking for volunteers to host the trunk games and candy stops. Volunteers will decorate their vehicle’s trunk and fill it with candy and treats - or play a game,

and youth will then walk by to receive the candy/treats. Volunteers are also encouraged to dress in costume. District Two Fall Fun Day set for Sunday, August 26 at Lodge 47, Seaton Dear District Two Youth Members, The Annual District Two Fall Fun Day will be held at Lodge 47, Seaton on Sunday, August 26, 2018. Registration of the youth and adult Christmas ornaments will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Rules can be found on page 37 of the 2018-2019 SPJST Youth Club Handbook or online at www.spjst.org. I do hope each of you - youth and adults - will show your talent. First place ornaments in each age category will be displayed on the SPJST Youth Christmas Tree at the Home Office. All youth participating will receive participation money along with the top three winners in each age category winning a monetary prize. A short business meeting will be held at 2 p.m. A drink ticket and game tickets will also be given to all in attendance. Those in attendance will be honored to meet and greet our 2018-2019 District Two Royalty Court - State King Nash Campbell of Lodge 24, Cyclone; Queen Brooke Newsom of Lodge 48, Beyersville; State Duke Tyson Bilbrey of Lodge 47, Seaton; and Duchess Tynlee Beckendorf of Lodge 182, Falls County. We are very proud of our royalty court and look forward to their representation of our district. A lot of fun things will be taking place on this day including a “sweet walk” (cakes, cookies, brownies, pies), adult and youth spinning wheels, guessing games, and more. The District Two Youth Club will be

having a silent auction. We are asking each youth club to bring at least one item of $10 or more value. Each family or anyone interested in supporting the youth - we appreciate your support also. Homemade items and food items are always welcome. There were so many compliments on all the YAD crafts entered this year. If you are not sure where to put your item or whether to keep it or not, why not donate it to the silent auction? And, all those sweet breads looked delicious! Not everyone who bid on them got to take one home. Why not make another one? I know I didn’t get one, but sure wanted one. Your items and bids will be appreciated. Proceeds will go toward Camp Kubena and the district youth fund. We are looking forward to seeing all of you and your beautiful Christmas ornaments on Sunday, August 26. The officers and directors of Lodge 13, Dime Box invite you to our Seventh Annual Casino Night Fundraiser on Saturday, September 22, 2018. The past fundraisers have replenished the lodge’s funds allowing us to remodel the ceiling, repair the wooden dance floor, add additional lighting, update electric wiring, replace the walk-in cooler in the bar, and purchase a new cooler under the bar cabin. With the hall being more than 30 years old, the building and equipment are in need of many more improvements and repairs. On Sunday, July 29, 2018, a benefit fundraiser for Scott Ruthven, who is a 25-year member of Nashville country singer Darryl Worley’s band, was held at SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin hall. Scott suffered a stroke earlier this year. Scott is originally from Blue, Texas, a small community near Elgin. Lodge 18, Elgin donated the hall for

Next, he said grace and recessed for the meal. Everyone enjoyed a roast beef meal with side dishes, a congratulatory cake for 50- and 75-year members, and a strudel dessert. It’s costing us to upkeep the mowing. We need to notify members by mail, in the Vestnik, and vote on it at the next meeting. He will get with the Home Office for letters. Lodge 30, Taiton reports on June meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton’s meeting was called to order on Sunday, June 3, 2018, at Taiton Community Center by

Secretary Marjorie Treumer read the minutes from the May meeting, and they were approved as read. Treasurer Lisa Bubela reported on

the financial standing of the lodge. There were no outstanding bills at this time. FAC Patsy Baker informed the members of the upcoming events around the state. She stated that the annual End of Summer Getaway in Corpus Christi was back on. It is scheduled on the weekend of August 10 to 12.

Secretary Marjorie Treumer then shared the list of new members, terminated certificates, and death claims. Youth Leader Lisa Bubela informed the members of the upcoming important dates. LIT camp is June 15 to 17, District Six Camp is June 20 to 24, District Six YAD is July 15, and State YAD is August 4.

VĚSTNÍK Director Kaspar then shared her recent schedule. She attended the Founders Day Celebration in Fayetteville. It was a great success. She also shared that she attended the dedication of the new fire station built on the land donated by Lodge 41, Port Lavaca, and they will use the station for their lodge meetings. President Yvonne Marcaurele then thanked the members for their assistance in making the recent awards banquet a success. The upcoming District Six YAD was then discussed. The menu was decided. We will serve chopped beef, chips, and a cookie for $5. We then discussed the need for misting stations at Camp Kubena. Members present then discussed the possibility of purchasing misting stations to donate. District Six Youth Counselor Lisa Bubela then shared that the District Six Youth Fund had donated four wagons to Camp Kubena to be used for the campers to transport their luggage. District Six Director Karen Kaspar also shared that she had donated a new board for the camp. Happy birthday was wished to Patsy Bubela and Vanessa and Hudson Riha. We wish them many more blessed years. Happy anniversary was then wished to Kirby and Evrette Lange and to Yvonne and David Marcaurele. We wish them many more years of wedded bliss. Our next meeting will be Sunday, July 1 at Taiton Community Center. Everyone is asked to meet at 10 a.m. The members will then go to Splashway Water Park after the meeting. Lodge 30, Taiton hosts District Six YAD Dear Vestnik Readers, The SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton meeting was called to order on Sunday, July 1, 2018, at Taiton Community Center by President Yvonne Marcaurele. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by the members present. A moment of silence was then observed for any sick or departed members. The reading of the minutes for the June meeting were waived. Treasurer Lisa Bubela reported on the financial standing of the lodge. She reported that she would be paying for the donated misting stations previously voted on. FAC Patsy Baker informed the members of the upcoming events around the state. She reminded the members of the upcoming annual End of Summer Getaway in Corpus Christi. Secretary Marjorie Treumer then shared the terminations, lapses, and death benefits paid out. Youth Leader Lisa Bubela informed the members of the upcoming important dates. District Six YAD is Sunday, July 15 in Taiton, State YAD is Saturday, August 4, and she reminded everyone that they needed to make reservations in Temple. She informed the members that the recent camp was a wonderful experience.

District Six Director Karen Kaspar was unable to attend the meeting. President Marcaurele reported that Director Kaspar had visited the members while they were at camp. While there, she donated $100 to the youth club and brought a wonderful snack for that afternoon. Yvonne asked that everyone please get their scrapbook pages turned in so that she can get the final work done. The YAD meal was discussed. David Marcaurele will be working in the kitchen with the help of Ed Zapalac. The next meeting will be Wednesday, August 1 at Taiton Community Center. Lodge 35, Elk reports on July meeting President Randy Pavelka called the SPJST Lodge 35, Elk and Elk Hall, Inc. meetings to order on Wednesday, July 25, 2018, at 7:09 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by officers, members, and guests. No one was reported on the sick list. Secretary Carla Price read her June meeting reports and with no corrections, the minutes were approved as read. Treasurer Barbara Pavelka also gave her June reports, and they were approved as read. Floor Chairman Gene Pavelka gave his turn-in for June, and we had a good month. Bar Chairman Randy Pavelka gave his June report as well. There was some more discussion on getting a cell phone for the hall use, and Barbara Pavelka was going to talk to the phone company to see if we could get a less expensive phone bill. There was no new business. Secretary Carla Price and her husband Johnny celebrated their first anniversary on July 29. Congratulations to them, and best wishes for many more. Treasurer Barbara Pavelka celebrated her birthday on August 3. We wish Barbara many more happy birthdays. Ten members and one guest were present. Lodge 54, West honors longtime members The meeting of SPJST Lodge 54, West was held at St. Joseph’s Hall and called to order at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 1, 2018, by President Freddie Kaluza. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mr. Kaluza followed by a moment of silence in memory of all our departed members who had passed away since our last meeting. We did not have any but remembered all members who had passed away throughout the years. Secretary Janice Kaluza called the roll. All officers and sales agents were present for the meeting except Wilburn Willis. We had 26 members and guests present. President Freddie Kaluza welcomed all who were in attendance for the meeting. The minutes of the last meeting were read by Janice Kaluza. JoAnn Matus made a motion to accept the minutes as read, and Marcella Vaculik seconded the motion. Motion passed. FAC Linda

Members were reminded of the 12th annual Corpus Christi Getaway in August and if anyone would like to join the group, they can call Home Office to get more information. The treasurer’s report was presented by Mary Lou Mynar. Jean Maler made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report, and JoAnn Matus seconded the motion. Motion passed. Czech Reporter Jan Vaculik did not have anything to report. Under old business, Janice Kaluza coordinated a Join Hands Day project for members to help with the Mother’s Day celebration for residents at West Rest Haven on May 11. We asked Helen Kocian to make 10 buchtas for the celebration which were $15 each. The Home Office sent us a $100 check to help fund this project. We would like to thank the volunteers who helped with serving, decorating, and entertaining the residents. The members from our lodge to receive undergraduate scholarships were Cameron Wolf, Coleman Wolf, Mason Tobola, and Conner Hutyra. John Engelke and President Freddie Kaluza presented a Lifetime Achiever Award to Herman and JoAnn Matus for the dedication to our lodge by attending and helping with the quarterly meetings. President Freddie Kaluza read some happenings from 50 years ago, and it’s amazing how time has changed all things in the world today. Freddie announced all the names of the people receiving 50-year pins. The 50-year members Floyd Wolf and Johnnye Caralou Young were congratulated and awarded their pins. Happy 7th Birthday, Cooper Kristinek! Lodge 157, Lubbock wishes Cooper Kristinek a very happy seventh birthday. Cooper celebrated his special day on July 19, 2018. He is the son of Will and Jamie Kristinek, grandson of Walter and Carla Kristinek, and great-grandson of Fredda and the late Ernest Kristinek. Lodge 79, Corpus Christi celebrated a belated Fourth of July with the lodge furnishing hot dogs and members bringing sides on Sunday, July 15, 2018. The meeting was called to order by President Mark Rebecek. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and we observed a moment of silence for deceased members Hector Alfred Salazar, Jr., Elizabeth Bohac, and Ben Castillo, Jr. On the sick list were Leona Grant who fell and injured her head and neck, and Becky Urbanovsky and Christina Rew who were both under the weather. All officers were present except for Assistant Youth Leader Christina Rew. We had 20 members and guests in attendance. Secretary Virginia Rebecek read the June minutes. There was one correction made to the minutes. After the correction, the minutes were approved. Treasurer Frank Sacky gave the financial report for June, and it was ap-

Under communications, Secretary Virginia Rebecek read the death claims, a letter from Roxanne Bertrand about donations for the End of Summer Getaway raffle, and a letter from Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez about Join Hands Day. Vice President/FAC Jerry Sijansky gave his FAC report. He stated a group was baking kolaches for the weekend getaway and gave a history on the Fourth of July. There was no unfinished business. Under new business, Treasurer Frank Sacky made a motion that our monthly donation go to the Loving Spoonful. Motion was approved. Youth Leader Marcia Rew gave the youth club report. The youth did a volcano project and colored pictures. Birthday for July was Virginia Rebecek on the 21st. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Virginia. Lodge 191, Lufkin hosts anniversary dance There was a very good turnout for the anniversary dance. Thanks to everyone who participated in the silent auction. The meeting of the Ladies Circle of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth took place on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, with 43 members present including the men. Cherish Ellsworth came with Aunt Lisa and Grandma and Grandpa Ellsworth. She is such a beautiful young lady, and we always enjoy seeing her. As usual, President Cathy Simmank led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and the business portion of the meeting. Then it was time to sing the “Happy Birthday” song. Those recognized were Margaret Laymance, President Cathy, Sandi Celusniak, and Jeanette Tesar.

And, for Stanley Krenek, Debbie Akins and Theretta Praslicka, here’s wishing all of you another year of all things good. The fun then began. Our president is so creative and comes up with the best ideas. This month, she developed a unique way to participate in a “Christmas in July” game. I’m going to call it “Cathy’s Christmas Game.” All members were asked to bring one new or gently used item to share with someone. We then drew a card from a “stacked deck.” Absolutely no one could figure out what was happening. Anyway, we were assigned to tables according to the cards we had picked. At this point, I can’t really remember the number of tables we had, but we were put in groups of about eight to 10. We then drew cards again to see in what order we would get to choose our “sussies” (presents). It was just . . . more fun than eating bugs! Such laughter and confusion took place! The ladies at my table were completely lost as to what was taking place; however, we all finally did end up getting a gift. If you missed the meeting, you really missed a good time. It was just great! Thank you, once again, Cathy, for your leadership and thoughtfulness. Binnie Thieme, Joy Booe, and Norma McLendon worked the kitchen. We appreciated their hard work and thanked them for serving such an outstanding meal. There were a couple of selections that I visited twice. M-m-mm . . . call me Miss Piggy! Last of all, two door prizes were awarded to the delight of Mary Ann Krivanek and Carolyn Belew. Thanks to the “door prize fairies” who always remember to bring those special little somethings. In closing the meeting, Janet led the group in saying grace, and as is customary, bingo games followed lunch.

In Memory of James Rothermel James D. Rothermel, age 99 years and 339 days, passed away Thursday, July 26, 2018. He was born August 20, 1918, in Burton, Texas, the son of Bailleux and Nathalie Ponfick Rothermel. James attended Burton Public Schools and was a 1938 graduate of Brenham High School. He attended National Youth Administration Education and Work Program at Inks Dam in Burnet. He was a construction painter at JamesD.Rothermel Corpus Christi United States Naval Base, Corpus Christi. He enlisted in the Navy on March 24, 1942, and was assigned to the 14th United States Navy Construction Battalion (Seabees) during World War II. He was a construction painter attaining the rank of Painter First Class serving at Noumea Caladonia, Guadalcanal, Hawaii, Saipan, and Okinawa. James graduated from Blinn College and from Southwest Texas State Teacher’s College with bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He devoted 29 years to the field of education. James retired from San Jacinto College in Pasadena in 1978 as Chairman, Division of Business Administration Department. Prior to that, he was Principal of Ganado High School from 1957 to 1964, Principal of Schulenburg High School from 1952 to 1957, and classroom teacher at Brenham High School from 1950 to 1953. On September 12, 2012, he was awarded Brenham ISD Distinguished Alumni Award. He was an active member of SPJST Lodge 169, Brenham. On August 24, 1947, he married Dorothy Ann Hodde at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Brenham. They kissed and said a blessing to God every night of their marriage until he passed away. She graduated in 1972 with a bachelor of arts degree in art with a minor in education earning a teaching certificate. Later, Alice took many courses at TCJC including aerobics, computers, electronics, swimming, and life saving. She was known as the first woman to get an associate’s degree in automotive service technology at Tarrant County Junior College along with a certificate in auto body repair. She was a homemaker, amateur radio operator, and worked as a substitute teacher for over six years at Burleson and Mansfield High Schools. Alice was a member of SPJST Lodge 180, Burleson. She was also a member of Arlington Radio Club, McLennan/Hill Czech Heritage Society, and St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Burleson, where she volunteered with a ladies group in the church making quilts for many events. She attended the Elk’s lodge in Arlington where she taught her children to swim. She loved life and enjoyed dancing, listening to Czech music, camping, hiking, swimming, playing volleyball, and traveling through Europe and almost all states in the United States. She attended Temple schools and graduated from Temple High School in 1958. She later attended Durham’s Business School. Annette married Donald Earl Wolfe in Seaton Brethren Church on December 10, 1966. Mr. Wolfe preceded her in death on June 26, 2003. Mrs. Wolfe worked for the SPJST Home Office, Farmers Home Administration, and for the Soil Conservation Service in Temple where she retired in January 1999 with over 30 years of federal service. She was a lifetime member of Seaton Brethren Church and served Annette Wolfe on the Board of Elders and as the Missions Director for many years. She was also a longtime member of the church Christian Sisters organization and always proud of the fact she was a third generation member. She enjoyed visiting church members in nursing homes and working on the church Santa Pal program, which served many families each year. She was also a Sunday School teacher, nursery attendant, church secretary, Vacation Bible School helper, and volunteered in many other areas of the church. Mrs. Wolfe was a member of SPJST Lodge 87, Temple. Mrs. Wolfe was very caring of her family especially when she lovingly cared for her ill husband for many years. She loved gospel music and attended many concerts with her brother and sister-in-law. She loved reading, baking cakes and brownies for church events or meals, and sewing clothes for her family. As a hobby, she made many bunnies and made clothes for them. She loved shopping and enjoyed her home very much especially at Christmas with the brightest decorations. Annette was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Julia Chlapek; and husband Donald E. Wolfe. Survivors include brother Edward L. Chlapek and wife Martha of Temple; sisters - her twin Jan Huber and husband Earl of Salado, and Irene Marek and husband Ed of Temple; numerous nieces and nephews; grandnieces; grandnephews; and many friends. Richard preceded her in death on October 10, 1983. Jeanette was then united in marriage to Daniel Pokluda on December 6, 1997, in West. She was a homemaker and worked for a short time at American Amicable Life Insurance Company, West ISD Tax Office, and WilkirsonHatch Funeral Home. Jeanette was a lifelong and faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption, where she served as an Extraordinary Minister. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court 829, St. Anne’s Altar Society, KJZT Society 11, Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, SPJST Lodge 66, Waco, and St. Mary’s PTA. Jeanette enjoyed gardening, canning pickles, going on casino trips, traveling abroad, going on cruises, and listening to Czech music. 2017 - 2018 SPJST State Royalty Notebook

State Queen As many readers know, I have dreamed of becoming SPJST State Queen since my first Youth Achievement Day when I was five years old. I wrote SPJST speeches from then on, and I even pretended my Barbies were running for queen and made up speeches for them, too. All my life, I have prepared for the moment that happened one short year ago. Of course, there are so many people I owe my success to besides my Barbies. My mom was so persistent with me saying my speech that I literally had dreams about it. My youth leader and District Youth Counselors set aside certain days for me to practice. Melanie helped every single year I ran because she knew how much being queen meant to me. Many more people helped along the way, but most of all, I think Mama Bessie Petr worked her magic up in heaven. My freshman year, I told her I was going to win a crown for her, and I’m sure she’s beseda dancing with it on as we speak.

This year has been everything I dreamed it would be and more. I never imagined that I would be royalty alongside the people I grew up around at my youth club. Madison, Austen, Maison, and I have grown so close with each other from traveling all around Texas. Madison is the only person I know who will sing Taylor Swift with me for hours. Austen and I have shared so many laughs that our sides started to hurt, and Maison has been the cause of our laughter most of the time! I loved these people before our reign, but now we have such a close bond. My senior year was perfect . . . thanks to being SPJST State Queen and sharing the royalty experience with some of the best people I have ever met. We have accomplished so much as royalty. We broke tradition, and instead of wearing our white polo shirts and khakis, we wore kroj. All of us are so proud of our Czech heritage, and we showed our appreciation by singing the National Anthem and Kde Domov Můj? at many events. One of the memorable experiences I have as royalty was actually the day I graduated. I was asked to kick off the National Polka Festival by singing the American and Czech National Anthems. I had to hurry up and sing so I would not be late to my graduation!

Speaking of graduation, royalty was sometimes hard to juggle with my senior year. Sometimes there would be an event I had to go to after cheering at football game three hours away. Or sometimes I would have to rush home to finish up homework. Royalty includes some late nights and many early mornings. Although most of the pictures show us waving on a float or being introduced on the stage, there is so much more that isn’t photographed. We do other things such as hand out flyers,

serve food, set up, and clean. It is such a humbling experience to continue what I and my fellow royalty court do at our local lodge on the state level. These experiences have made my final year in Texas (for a while), one I will never forget.

I owe my entire future to SPJST. I was accepted into 10 colleges with offers from hundreds more. Instead of writing an essay over one of the assigned topics for admission, I chose my own topic. My essay was on SPJST and all it has allowed me to achieve. Without SPJST, I would have not been accepted into Fordham University, Boston University, SMU, and many more. For those who do not know, I am attending Syracuse University in New York. I will be majoring in international relations with a focus in international security and diplomacy. I am minoring in Russian and Central European studies. I am attending college to learn more about my Czech culture and how to apply it on a governmental level. I will be learning German because Czech is not offered, but I plan to focus specifically on the Czech Republic while getting my masters and doctorate degrees. My ultimate goal is to make my way back to Texas and become the president of SPJST and eventually the Ambassador of the United States to the Czech Republic. SPJST has been my entire life, and it will be my future. Having the honor of being crowned SPJST State Queen has inspired me to immerse myself within my culture even more and show my appreciation throughout the United States. I prayed every day for years that I would

be State Queen, and now I thank God every day for this amazing opportunity. I wish this year had gone by slower, and I will miss everything being SPJST State Queen entailed. As Mama Bessie once told me, “All good things come to an end.” This is not a goodbye, this is a see you later. SPJST Camps It is amazing how fast July 2018 has come and gone! By the time you read this letter, we will have celebrated the achievements of our SPJST youth at their District Youth Achievement Days and enjoyed fun-filled days at our SPJST camps at Camp Kubena. I hope to see our youth numbers increase with participation in our youth program in 2019. SPJST youth camps have come to an end. After being away from the State Youth Director position for five years, it was great spending time with all the youth, District Youth Counselors, Assistant District Youth Counselors, youth leaders, and chaperones. SPJST members are like family to me and this summer I felt very blessed to have been given the time to enjoy those fun times with our youth. My only wish would have been to participate with each camp session for the whole time at Camp Kubena. I have really enjoyed watching everyone create more “Out of This World” memories with SPJST - not to mention - lots of great laughs. Besides the usual activities at camp such as high ropes, archery, and swimming, each district provided their youth with other unique activities such as dance lessons, hay rides, rugby, and soccer with camp staff. I really enjoy watching first time campers attend camp; and the first day they are very reserved and not sure what it’s all about. Then something happens overnight — they make new friends and participate in the camp activities.

Overnight, you see a transformation and they have a big smile on their face, and you know they are having a great experience and the time of their life. Perseid Meteor Shower—August 12 The iconic August meteor shower officially peaks on August 12 at 1 p.m.; so for North Americans, the best time to watch will be Monday and Tuesday evenings. However, the meteors will be contending with the glare of a nearly full moon early on both evenings, making the pre-dawn hours possibly the best time for observing the sky show. Moon and Aldebaran—August 16 At dawn, the brightest star-like object visible rising in the east is the planet Venus. The crescent moon to its upper right will be very close to the orange-hued star Aldebaran. This giant star, which marks the eye of the mythical Taurus, the bull, will appear to be less than three degrees from the moon. The District Two Youth Club will be having a silent auction. We are asking each youth club to bring at least one item of $10 or more value. Each family or anyone interested in supporting the youth - we appreciate your support, also. Homemade items and food items are always welcome. There were so many compliments on all the YAD crafts entered this year. If you are not sure where to put your item or whether to keep it or not, why not donate it to the silent auction? Czech Heritage Museum presents “Milada” August 14 at The Beltonian The Czech Heritage Museum & Genealogy Center will screen “Milada,” a film in English which tells the true story of Czech hero and democratic politician Milada Horakova (1901-1950), on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, at The Beltonian Theatre, 219 East Central Avenue in Belton. Admission is free of charge, but donations will be accepted. The film has an adult rating fo themes, violence, and situations. Milada Horakova was the only woman to be executed by the Communist regime for her political beliefs. Horakova is played by Ayelet Zurer, an Israeli actress of Slovakian descent who also starred in Steven Spielberg’s “Munich.” The film was originally set to screen on May 8, but due to technical difficulties another Czech film, “Divided We Fall,” was screened. The movies “Kolya” and “Zelary” were shown in June and July. “While we were disappointed that we were not able to show “Milada” in May as advertised, we are happy that we will be able to show it this month,” said Susan Chandler, director of the Czech Heritage Museum. “Seeing a movie at the historic Beltonian Theatre is a unique experience,” Chandler said. “It feels like a social event - like something we are discovering together. The in-row dining tables and comfy seats make it almost as comfortable as home, and the food is wonderful. Zechariah Baker, the owner, has brought in, especially for Czech Film Night, authentic Czechvar beer, imported from České Budějovice, Czech Republic, the medieval Budweiser brewery dating back to 1265.” The movie was written, directed and produced by David Mrnka, who has produced filming projects around the world for CNN, BBC, Larry King Live, and others. Although the story is in the public domain and documentaries had been previously made, Mrnka sought the per-

spective of Horakova’s daughter, Jana Kanska, who lives in Washington, D.C. “I wanted personal information from the family and to have the blessing of her daughter,” Mrnka said. “So I stayed three days and she drilled me. Ultimately she said yes and we worked together on the movie.”

“He had so much information already, which he obtained from the archives and from all the historical documents, that I was absolutely sure he was the right person to make this very difficult film,” Kanska told Radio Prague. “So I faithfully waited until now, when the film became reality.”

Czech Heritage Museum offers free Czech mini-workshops August 15 and 22 The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center will offer Czech language workshops taught by Lieutenant Ethan Gleue at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 15 and Wednesday, August 22, 2018, at 119 West French Avenue in Temple. “Lieutenant Gleue taught some grammar workshops before his deployment earlier this year, which for some, were a bit advanced,” said Susan Chandler, museum administrator. “He has returned and this time we are going to start with very basic skills and move forward from there.” First Lieutenant Ethan Gleue is an Attack Platoon Leader and Apache Pilot with Charlie Company, 1-227th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division assigned to Fort Hood, Texas. “I love studying the Czech language, experiencing Czech culture, and sharing that with others. The Czech Heritage Museum provides a great venue to share that love and support a worthy organization,” said Gleue. Ethan served a two-year mission trip in the Czech Republic and Slovakia where he learned Czech and Slovak. He lived in several cities throughout the region including Ostrava, Prague, Olomouc, Brno, Zlin, and Banska Bystrica. Ethan has returned to the Czech Republic and Slovakia several times, including a summer semester at Charles University in 2014. Most recently, Ethan returned from a nine-month rotational deployment to Europe with the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade where he traveled to the Czech Republic

The keynote speakers of the academic conference are expected to be Prof. Mgr. Jaroslav Miller, Rector of Palacký University and Farář Mgr. Jaroslav Křivánek of the Hussite Church, both in Olomouc, Czech Republic. Prof. Miller will speak on the events of 1918 and the formation of Czechoslovakia; Fr. Paper and Music Competition As the home of the CEFT Dr. Frank J. and Hermine Hurta Kostohryz Residency in Czech Music and Culture and the Dr. Jim and Rose Bezdek Endowment Fund Celebrating Czech Music and Culture, the UNT College of Music is calling for Texas students to submit an essay on the topic of Czech music or a video (phone video OK) of their performance of a piece of music written by a Czech composer. UNT will provide the opportunity for Texas students – one in each of the categories below – to read their papers at the academic conference on Saturday, December 1; likewise, we will provide the opportunity for Texas students – one in each of these same categories – to perform a musical work written by a Czech composer.

A special rate for lodging at the Denton Conference Center will be available for our out-of-town visitors. Judging Once received, all essays and videos will have identifying information removed before being forwarded to a panel of judges. Judges will see only the category for each entry (e.g., 1st to 4th grade). Deadline and Submission Submission deadline as a scanned paper or video file, sent as an attachment, is September 15, 2018. Winners will be notified no later than October 1.

Music Essay (one winner selected in each category) Level 1: 1st to 4th grade. Essay 2 page in length (hand-written, with optional handdrawings on page 2) on what it means to preserve one’s ethnic culture. Level 2: 5th to 8th grade. Essay 4 pages in length (double-spaced, typed, 12-point font with 1-inch margins) on the life and contributions of a particular Czech classical composer. Level 3: 9th to 12th grade. Essay 8 pages in length (double-spaced, typed, 12-point font with 1-inch margins) on a particular piece of music written by a Czech classical composer. Level 4: Undergraduate College. 8 pages in length (double-spaced, typed, 12-point font with 1-inch margins) on how a particular historical event – the Battle of White Mountain in 1620, the rise of “nationalism” in the 19th century, the formation of “Czechoslovakia” in 1918, WW2, the 1968 invasion, etc. – impacted a particular Czech classical composer’s life and work. Music Performance (one winner selected in each category) The work may be for solo piano, for piano four-hands, for solo instrument or voice accompanied by piano, or for small ensemble. The work must have been written by a Czech composer. Recognition Banquet and Opera Performance In addition to reading their essay or performing at the conference, each winner and one parent will be guests of the university to be recognized at the festival

Child performers needed University of North Texas College of Music UNT Opera Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen with The UNT Symphony Orchestra Vaclav Havel Czech School of Dallas Czech Educational Foundation of Texas There was once a beloved newspaper cartoon series about the antics and adventures of a fiery Vixen, called The Cunning Little Vixen, (Příhody lišky Bystroušky) which the whole Czech nation followed in the early 1920s – a bit like Americans with their love for Charlie Brown. Janáček was inspired by this Vixen cartoon series and transformed it into one of the most delightful operas ever written. For UNT Opera’s upcoming production of The Cunning Little Vixen, in association with the Texas Czech Education Foundation, UNT Opera plans to collaborate with the Vaclav Havel Czech School of Dallas to find approximately 16 chil-

dren, aged 7 to 10, to sing (in English and in Czech) and act as 16 Foxcubs, including secondary roles as twp Young Vixens (singing), two Young Frogs (singing), and two Hares (non-singing). All secondary roles also appear as Foxcubs. Nina Marcussen, founder of Vaclav Havel Czech School of Dallas, will be auditioning and helping train the child performers for this production. This is a terrific opportunity for children to participate in a wonderful, fun event, to work on the musical stage in a fully professional but caring environment, and learn a great deal at the same time. The opera is relatively short (just shy of two hours) and has two acts; the Young Vixens are on at the beginning and the end, the Young Hares are on in the middle, the Young Frogs are on at the end, and the Foxcubs are on at the start of Act II roughly 80 minutes after the beginning of the show. The children will be supervised while onstage during stage rehearsals and performances by UNT student stage management staff, with one UNT student wrangler also in attendance available in the dressing rooms and leading children from dressing rooms to the stage. Parents are always welcome, and may want to establish a rotation to supervise children when they are in rehearsals and in the dressing rooms (so that not all parents need to be in attendance all the time). We suggest one parent for every five children. Parents will need to sign a UNT liability waiver for their children’s participation in the project. Each child will receive a total of two complimentary tickets, to be used by parents or friends for any single UNT performance. Austin Czechs plan October 21 Český Večer Austin Czech Historical Association will hold its 24th annual Český Večer on Sunday, October 21, 2018, at the historic Saengerrunde Hall (1607 San Jacinto Blvd) in Austin, Texas (next door to Scholz Garten). This year, we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the creation of the independent state of Czechoslovakia. Festivities begin at 3 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres (předkrmy) and accordion music. The 5 p.m. dinner (večeře) will be catered by our favorite Czech caterer Pavla Van Bibber, serving Czech food (České jídlo) including potato leek soup, roast pork, dumplings, cabbage, mushroom strudel, salad, and rolls. Everyone will also enjoy a sampling of Pavla’s special desserts. Tea, coffee, water, and ice will be provided, and guests may bring in their own coolers for drinks such as beer, wine, and sodas.
