Cyclone, Snook, Seaton Youth Win State Crowns
SPJST Youth Showcase Talents at State Youth Achievement Day Approximately 200 SPJST youth from across Texas met at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple, Texas, on Saturday, August 4, 2018, to showcase their knowledge and skills at SPJST State Youth Achievement Day (YAD). The 2018 competition involved participants in grades kindergarten to high school senior. They competed in 15 events, testing their skills in areas such as paper construction, dessert (quick breads), handicraft, photography (bridges), sewing, public speaking, and talent. The event also featured a special category which is a surprise until the day of the competition. This year, participants were instructed to create a greeting card using an assortment of craft materials that were available to them. District and State YADs allow SPJST youth club members to demonstrate their knowledge and skills and gain recognition for their achievements. As the youth compete, they develop self-confidence and sharpen their decision-making abilities. They also have a chance to socialize with other youth club members. SPJST State YAD is the culmination of a year of hard work by some of the best and brightest SPJST youth club members. Winners of SPJST District YAD competitions across Texas qualified to compete at the state contest. Seven District YADs were held in June and July in Caldwell, Cyclone, Arlington, Rowena, Houston, Taiton, and Floresville. The grand finale of the 2018 State Youth Achievement Day was the presentation of the 2018-2019 State Royalty Court. Crowned to represent SPJST in
the coming year were 2018 - 2019 SPJST State Royalty King Nash Campbell of Lodge 24, Cyclone and Duke Tyson Bilbrey of Lodge 47, Seaton in District Two and Queen Grace Lewis and Duchess Dakota Kienow, both of Lodge 9, Snook in District One. State King Nash, 17, is the son of Derek and Kim Campbell of Burlington. Nash is a junior at Rogers High School. State Duke Tyson is 10 years old and the son of Chelsea and Darrell Bilbrey of Moody. State Queen Grace, 17, is the daughter of Justin and Loree Lewis of Snook. Grace is a senior at Snook High School. Lodge 30, Taiton teen receives $1,500 State Merit Grant Brittany Baker, age 15, a member of
Lodge 30, Taiton, is the recipient of the 2018 SPJST State Merit Grant. She is the daughter of Bubba and Patsy Baker of El Campo. Brittany is a sophomore at El Campo High School. She received the $1,500 grant during the SPJST State Youth Achievement Day awards ceremony in Temple. After high school, Brittany plans to attend Wharton County Junior College and major in the medical
field. Teens from each district with the most youth merit points over the last three years competed for the grant. As part of the competition, each teen submitted a 1,000-word essay on the topic “Out of this World with SPJST.” The winner was selected by a panel of judges using the following criteria: content (50 percent); mechanics (35 percent); and neatness (15 percent).

State Merit Grant Essay: Out of this World with SPJST By Brittany Baker of Lodge 30, Taiton - District Six
J
ak se mas? Have you found an organization that really goes over and beyond to galaxies far, far away? I have, and I’m proud to call that organization SPJST (Slovanska Podporujici Jenota Statu Texas). I was born into Czech ancestry and my Czech heritage has been passed down from my ancestors that went out of this world and journeyed over from Czechoslovakia to America. Once they got to America, they started an organization called Cesko-Slovanska Podporujici Spolecnost (C.S.P.S.), but today, the name has changed to Slovanska Podporujici Jenota Statu Texas otherwise known as SPJST. With my family providing me with a life insurance plan as a baby, my life as an SPJST member began when I joined the youth program, and that is when I started having experiences that were out of this world. When I think of “out of this world,” it reminds me of all of the planets in our galaxy. As the old saying goes, “My very eager mother just served us nine pizzas,” which is an acronym I learned in elementary school about how to remember the order of the planets - Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto - and reminds me of the awesome experience I have had being a part of the SPJST organization and youth club. Mercury is magnificent because it is the planet nearest to the sun and is extremely hot. This makes me think of my time spent at Camp Kubena on those gloriously hot

Venus is vivid and is the brightest object in the sky besides the sun and the moon. In SPJST, this makes me think of the extremely bright high school students who give their royalty speeches and shine brightly on stage during the State Youth Achievement Day (YAD) competition in Temple. Earth is exciting because as far as we know, it is the only planet that has huge bodies of water that are able to support the life that exists on the planet. Just like Earth, SPJST has proven to be exciting for my life. Earth’s name derives from Old English and Germanic language. This fact reminds me about the cultural experiences that I have had by being a part of SPJST. For example, during camp, a demonstration was taught to us all on how to make homemade kolaches (known as kolachkes), step by step, which is a cultural food of the Czech people that has now become widespread across the nation and world and is accepted by all cultures. Mars is marvelously red and is known as the “Red Planet” due to its red color. Mars is also named after the Greek God of War. This reminds me of the Kmen Soutez where the Kona and Medveti tribes, who in English are the horses and bears, came together as a team to support each other during the different Congratulations to 2018 SPJST State Merit Grant Winner events our teammates participated in. Good afternoon, Brothers, Sisters, and Judges. I have been involved with SPJST my entire life, as an infant, my parents purchased a life insurance policy for me. As a toddler, I attended SPJST events with my family and my older brother who was already a member of the SPJST youth organization. I had to be five years old before I could participate in the youth club. I could not wait to become a member and participate in all the “Out of this World” activities that SPJST provided. Since becoming an active youth club member, SPJST has bestowed upon me many adventures that I will never forget. I have learned many things by being part of SPJST. From participating in various shenanigans at camp to competing at Youth Achievement Day and from district outings to charity projects. The SPJST organization has impacted me in ways I could have never imagined. I remember one year at SPJST camp I had to climb up a tree that felt like it was as tall as a New York City skyscraper and walk a tight rope just to get to the zip-line to fly over all my friends and chaperones like an eagle. Although I was very scared climbing and walking the tight rope, I felt “out of this world” when I was zip-lining over the top of everyone. From this point on, I was hooked on SPJST and

all the adventures it has provided me. Membership in the SPJST Youth Club provides endless learning opportunities. Leaders-in-Training camp is a great example. Attending LIT camp, has allowed me to make many friends and connections throughout the state. It has trained me to be a leader of the younger generation. It has taught me how to encourage others to come out of their shells and overcome their fears. Youth Achievement Day has taught me to compete in activities I would have never attempted like the talent and baking competitions. I have had the opportunity to serve in various office positions within my youth club. This provided me the chance to improve my public speaking skills and to serve in a position of leadership. These kinds of opportunities are what makes SPJST “Out of this World.” I’ve learned that “people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” — Maya Angelou For I am sure that through the years, I will forget what people in the SPJST may have said and what they did at various functions, but I will never forget how the people who make up the SPJST organization made me feel! In SPJST, this reminds me of being a Leader-in-Training (LIT) and a role model surrounded by many moonlets, or younger campers, who look up to me as a leader and a role model. These qualities I have learned while serving as an officer in my local youth club as well as at LIT camp. Uranus is unusual because unlike all of the other planets, it does not have an equator and is tilted sideways in its rotation. In SPJST, this reminds me of all of the unusual and different qualities all of the youth at camp have. I remember how we utilized all of our differences and

Welcome, judges, family, friends, and fellow SPJST members. It is a pleasure to be here with you all. Star Trek actor William Shatner said, “A sense of the unknown has always lured mankind and the greatest of the unknowns is outer space. The terrors, the joys and the sense of accomplishment . . . ” While the heavens might intrigue us all, it was our Czech ancestors who were lured to the great unknown as they set out for America more than 150 years ago. Upon arriving in Texas and founding the SPJST, our ancestors had that sense of accomplishment in what they set out to find. This organization, the SPJST, is in many ways comparable to our solar system. In the same way the planets orbit around the Sun, the activities of the SPJST revolve around keeping our heritage and traditions alive. The Italian astronomer Galileo, in speaking about the Sun, once said, “With all those planets revolvuniqueness to come together during low ropes in order to accomplish one common goal as a team. This was an opportunity where all of our unique talents shined. Neptune is neighboring nearby to the nearest planet Pluto. In SPJST, this reminds me of how all of my friends and neighbors come together for our monthly youth club meeting. Pluto is panoramic in that the planet has blue skies, spinning moons, mountains, valleys, and red snow. The most amazing feature is that it has a heart-shaped glacier. In SPJST, this heart-shaped glacier reminds me of the love and fraternalism that the members show one another during times of despair, such
ing around and dependent upon it, it can still ripen a bunch of grapes, as if there were nothing else in the Universe to do.” The SPJST, though it has a number of fraternal and civic responsibilities, takes time to grow and ripen the precious fruits found in the youth program. This growth is promoted and stimulated through summer and Leaders-in-Training camps, cemetery clean-ups, nursing home visits, Grandparent’s Day gatherings, and numerous community service projects. Through these activities, the adult leaders volunteering their time not only teach us about our ancestors and traditions, but also about the morals and values they held dear. Those values, like gravity, are what hold this organization together. They include brotherhood, benevolence, hard work, honesty, and a genuine care for those around you. In keeping these values and continuously passing them on to all youth, we can ensure that the future of the SPJST will be bright . . . like a harvest moon in July, and the stars in a clear night’s sky. Thank you, and God bless. • • • SPJST • • • as the recent Hurricane Harvey flooding. Many of our members came together to assist those affected by this disaster. Also, love is shown year-round as we take care of each other and support one another as well as others in the community. SPJST is amazing to me and reminds me of the time during the astronomer’s visit at Camp Kubena. He said, “Just imagine, for every star you see out there in the universe scientists now believe that there is one planet for every star.” Therefore, the possibilities are endless just as they are in SPJST. District One seeks “trunk-or-treat” hosts for fall fun day on October 21 in New Tabor Dear District One Members, Save the date . . . the District One Fall Fun Day is Sunday, October 21, 2018, at Lodge 17, New Tabor Hall at 3 p.m. Youth and adults are encouraged to dress in Halloween costumes. One of the fun activities that we are planning is “trunk-or-treat.” We are looking for volunteers to host the trunk games and candy stops. Volunteers will decorate their vehicle’s trunk and fill it with candy and treats - or play a game,
and youth will then walk by to receive the candy/treats. Volunteers are also encouraged to dress in costume. District Two Fall Fun Day set for Sunday, August 26 at Lodge 47, Seaton Dear District Two Youth Members, The Annual District Two Fall Fun Day will be held at Lodge 47, Seaton on Sunday, August 26, 2018. Registration of the youth and adult Christmas ornaments will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Rules can be found on page 37 of the 2018-2019 SPJST Youth Club Handbook or online at www.spjst.org. I do hope each of you - youth and adults - will show your talent. First place ornaments in each age category will be displayed on the SPJST Youth Christmas Tree at the Home Office. All youth participating will receive participation money along with the top three winners in each age category winning a monetary prize. A short business meeting will be held at 2 p.m. A drink ticket and game tickets will also be given to all in attendance. Those in attendance will be honored to meet and greet our 2018-2019 District Two Royalty Court - State King Nash Campbell of Lodge 24, Cyclone; Queen Brooke Newsom of Lodge 48, Beyersville; State Duke Tyson Bilbrey of Lodge 47, Seaton; and Duchess Tynlee Beckendorf of Lodge 182, Falls County. We are very proud of our royalty court and look forward to their representation of our district. A lot of fun things will be taking place on this day including a “sweet walk” (cakes, cookies, brownies, pies), adult and youth spinning wheels, guessing games, and more. The District Two Youth Club will be
having a silent auction. We are asking each youth club to bring at least one item of $10 or more value. Each family or anyone interested in supporting the youth - we appreciate your support also. Homemade items and food items are always welcome. There were so many compliments on all the YAD crafts entered this year. If you are not sure where to put your item or whether to keep it or not, why not donate it to the silent auction? And, all those sweet breads looked delicious! Not everyone who bid on them got to take one home. Why not make another one? I know I didn’t get one, but sure wanted one. Your items and bids will be appreciated. Proceeds will go toward Camp Kubena and the district youth fund. We are looking forward to seeing all of you and your beautiful Christmas ornaments on Sunday, August 26. Join in for an afternoon of fun along with a great meal of pork loin, double baked potatoes, green beans, tea, and a piece of good tasting homemade cake by Judy Pechal. Lodge 6, Cottonwood sets August 31 potato peeling party SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood President Milton Peterson called the meeting to order on Friday, August 3, 2018, at 7:30 p.m. President Peterson led the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence for the sick and deceased of the lodge. Sister Peggy Dobecka and Brother Jerry Kucera were absent. Sister Georgie Soukup reported 12 members present. Sister Barbara Hykel read the minutes from the last meeting. Brother Don Urbanovsky gave the treasurer’s report and the youth report. The youth want to thank everyone for donations and help at the picnic. The bingo and raffle were a success. Sister Evelyn Stuckly had no FAC report. A sympathy card was sent to the Nelda Hlavaty family. A get-well card was sent to Robert Schimentz. Brother Don Urbanovsky gave the report on the picnic. Lodge 13, Dime Box sets September 22 casino night The officers and directors of Lodge 13, Dime Box invite you to our Seventh Annual Casino Night Fundraiser on Saturday, September 22, 2018. The past fundraisers have replenished the lodge’s funds allowing us to remodel the ceiling, repair the wooden dance floor, add additional lighting, update electric wiring, replace the walk-in cooler in the bar, and purchase a new cooler under the bar cabin. With the hall being more than 30 years old, the building and equipment are in need of many more improvements and repairs. Lodge 24, Cyclone hosts successful District YAD Lodge 24, Cyclone met on Monday night, August 13, 2018, at Flag Hall amid harvested cornfields that you can now see forever. The harvest was bitter as yields were low. The cotton has suffered, too. The bright spot for cotton is the chemical that cost $12 per acre and the cotton does not die from root rot. The meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m. by President Daniel Wilde who had a silent prayer for our deceased members and military veterans. Margaret Mikeska read the minutes from the last meeting. They were accepted as read. Linda Wilde gave the treasurer’s report, and there were no questions. Brenda Maddux gave the FAC and youth reports. The District Two Fall Fun Day is Sunday, August 26 at Lodge 47, Seaton. Vrazels’ Polka Band will be honored on October 20 at Heritage Fest/Muziky in La Grange. We discussed the successful District Two YAD that we hosted at Flag Hall. We further discussed New Year’s Eve with Jerry Haisler; Red Ravens on February 16, 2019; and Squeezebox featuring Ted Lange and Mollie B on March 16, 2019. More on New Year’s Eve later. Lodge 25, Ennis completes hall repairs Dear Readers, On Thursday August 9, our monthly members’ supper was served at 6:30 p.m. Betty Macalik, with the help of Margaret Krajca, prepared a delicious meal consisting of brisket, baked potatoes, and salad with strawberry cake and cherry cream cheese pie for dessert. The monthly lodge meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. by President JoAnn Needham with Margaret Krajca
leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. On the sick list was social member Greg Crow who was recently hospitalized, and Rose Dlabaj who has a broken toe. Secretary Pat Fowler read the minutes to the July meeting. She then gave the treasury and financial reports. Laure Krajca gave the bar report. FAC Kay Lynn Kovar reported on the upcoming Westfest on Labor Day weekend; September 8 - Kolache Festival in Caldwell; September 30 - Houston Slavic Fest; and October 28 - District Three Fall Meeting, hosted by Lodge 6, Cottonwood at Sokol Dallas. Youth Leader Rita Holland reported that our youth member Misty Dvorak and her duchess Aubrey Roberts did well in the royalty competition at State YAD placing second runner-up. Misty, who was in attendance at the meeting, said she looks forward to competing for the title again next year. Outgoing State Queen April Dvorak reported that she will be moving to New York to attend Syracuse University. She also announced that she joined the ROTC, and upon graduation from Syracuse, will be an Air Force officer. Congratulations, April! Sales Agent Margaret Krajca reported one member pending. The Home Office sent a letter stating member James Janicek has requested a transfer of membership from Lodge 205, Terrell to our lodge. Request was granted. Welcome, Mr. Janicek! We look forward to having you join us at our monthly meetings and social activities. Under old business, it was reported that the dancehall ceiling painting and repairs have been completed. lights, exit lights, and several switched were also repaired. President Needham thanked members Betty Macalik, Margaret Krajca, Jeff and Julie Mraz and their sons Jacob and Justin who helped with the clean up after this major project. Good job! Under new business, Vice President Laure Krajca presented information on the flag program which is hosted by the local rotary club. For a small fee, on patriotic holidays, the Rotary Club of Ennis displays flags at homes and businesses around the community. After a short discussion, members voted to participate in the program with four flags two flags at each driveway, beginning Labor Day. Julie Mraz mentioned that her son Justin participated in the Rotary Club leadership camp and that he will be one of the volunteers to help with our flag display. Thank you, Justin! There was further discussion regarding the need to purchase a new flag for the main flag pole. Other new business discussed— Charlie Jurcik proposed a fun idea to raise money for our building fund with a 50/50 drawing. The drawing will be held every month in conjunction with “Birthday Wednesday” at 9 p.m. After a short discussion, it was decided to go forward with this idea beginning this month on August 29. With no other business to discuss, August birthdays were announced. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Adell Rejcek and Kay Lynn Kovar who were present. Anniversaries announced were Jeff and Julie Mraz celebrating 20 years and a recognized anniversary - Margaret and Johnnie I. Krajca who met at the old “National Hall” in 1955. The meeting adjourned, and social began with 25 members present. Please make plans to attend any of our future events. Lodge 29, Taylor plans Sept. 28-29 barbecue cookoff Lodge 29, Taylor held its regular meeting on Wednesday, August 8, 2018. President Ronnie Rieger called the meeting to order and led the Pledge of Allegiance. We had a moment of silence for our departed. Officers absent were Mike Girod. The July minutes were read and approved. Tammy gave the treasurer’s report. Vice President/FAC Sharon Kaderka reported that on August 26, the District Two Fall Meeting will be held at Lodge 47, Seaton. Westfest will be September 1. On September 8, the annual Kolache Festival will be held in Caldwell. Tammy gave the youth club report for Cristy. District Two YAD was held at Lodge 24, Cyclone on July 14. At the July youth meeting, they met at Dairy Queen and had Blizzards during the meeting. The youth decided on August 8 to have a membership drive at the Taylor Pool. Future meetings of the youth club will be held on the second Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Taylor SPJST Hall. The youth club will sponsor the silent auction at the barbecue cookoff on September 29. Baked goods or any new item with a value of at least $10 will be appreciated. Proceeds are used to adopt needy families at Christmas. Jesse Pospisil reported the property committee is working with Oncor to get new, updated electric service that is compatible to our newest air conditioner unit. We had gravel put in the parking lot around the hall. We also had a new cooler box installed downstairs. We are working on getting an ATM machine placed in the hall. We look forward to the appreciation dinner to honor our sponsors from the barbecue cookoff and also all our workers and members who helped with the cookoff. When the property committee members moved out the old cooler box, they found $4.82 in coins. Frankie Pustejovsky took the coins home and cleaned them. He brought them back to the hall to give as a door prize, and Sharon Kaderka was the winner of the coins! Ronnie discussed the barbecue cookoff and asked if anyone could contact sponsors for the event. We need help selling tickets for our giveaway at the cookoff and also with various duties during the cookoff. We always need judges for the meat entries. Lodge 29 has a new transfer member, Kevin Carr. Leonard Kaderka made a motion to accept the new member, and Sharon Beran seconded. The motion passed. Welcome to Lodge 29, Kevin!

The meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Edwin Pechal. Flags were presented along with the reciting of The Pledge of Allegiance. The first order of business from President Pechal was congratulating youth member Tyson Bilbrey, who is the new 2018-2019 SPJST State Duke. He proudly wore his sash and joined us for the adult meeting also. We also congratulate State King Nash Campbell from Lodge 24, Cyclone, our neighbor lodge down the road. We are so proud of both of these two young gentlemen and wish them the best representing SPJST. All officers and board members were present except FAC EJ Pechal. President Pechal gave an update on the barbecue cookoff in the absence of Chairman EJ Pechal. He stated Star Hall would have another cookoff in 2019. Registration will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. All members - youth and adults - are reminded to enter the Christmas ornament contest. A silent auction will be sponsored by the district youth Club. Item donations and bids are welcome. A “dessert” cake walk, spinning wheels, door prizes, guessing games, kids’ games, and much more will keep everyone entertained for the afternoon. District Two/State King Nash Campbell and District Two Queen Brooke Newsom will give their royalty speeches. All state winners will also be recognized. The District Two Beseda Dancers will also perform. It will be a fun day filled with friends and family. Please make plans to attend, and bring a friend with you. 31 youth attended the meeting today. She also stated how proud she and the youth club were of those who participated at State YAD. Many came home with ribbons. Youth Club Membership Drive Sunday, September 2 The youth club will be having a membership drive/end of summer party on Sunday, September 2 from 2 to 4 p.m. The youth meeting will be held at 1 p.m. There will be a giant waterslide, hot dogs, and door prizes. Everyone is invited! We especially invite those members who have not been active. We’d love to have you join in on all the fun the youth have all year long. Six Mile VFD Fire Station constructed on land donated by SPJST Lodge 41, Port Lavaca Giving is not only about making a donation; it’s about making a difference, And, that’s exactly what SPJST Lodge 41, Port Lavaca has made in the Six Mile Community. Thanks to the lodge’s past and present members, a fire station was constructed on two acres of land that Lodge 41 gave to Calhoun County for the Six Mile Volunteer Fire Department. The land was originally donated to Lodge 41 by Josef and Emilie Marek in 1906. “Our lodge is so small there’s no way we could possibly afford to build a new lodge hall and maintain it with insurance and utilities and everything we have,” Lodge 41 President Franklin Jurek said in August 2016, after the lodge turned the land over to the county. “The lodge members were very much in favor of this transaction so we decided that we’d donate it to the county to be utilized for the fire department. It was donated to us, so we figured that we, in turn, would donate it to the county.” The Six Mile Community Volunteer Fire Department recently celebrated the grand opening of its volunteer fire station, which located at 34 Royal Road in Port Lavaca, Texas. Held Saturday, April 7, 2018, many community members along with SPJST Lodge 41 members enjoyed a day of food and fellowship. District Six Director Karen Kaspar presented a donation from her discretionary fund to Six Mile Volunteer Fire Department. “At the 2016 SPJST Convention, Lodge 41 President Franklin Jurek announced that Lodge 41 would donate its two acres of land to Six Mile Volunteer Fire Department for the purpose to build a new fire station facility,” Director Kaspar said. “Less than two years later . . . with fundraisers and a lot of great teamwork throughout the county, com-

munity, and SPJST Lodge 41, the Six Mile VFD Fire Station is a reality!” The lodge, which has approximately 45 members with 10 to 15 of those still in the Port Lavaca area, was organized as SPJST Lodge 41, Nova Ratolest, Port Lavaca (Calhoun County) on May 25, 1902. Charter members were Josef Marek, Jan Liska, Josef Kabal, Edward See, Frank Kabela, Bohumil Charbula, Tomas Charbula, Charles Sturzenbeker, Richard Boehm, Jan F. Kovar, Frantisek Nedbalek, Otto L. See, Vinc S. Lesikar, Theodore Charbula, and Jan Drgac. In the 1940s, two lodge halls were built on the property, one in 1942 and the other, five years later after a hurricane destroyed the first one, Another hurricane wrecked the second hall, and it was finally torn down in 1999. Mary Allison wrote this historical information about her grandparents Josef and Emilie Marek, who originally donated the land to Lodge 41: When Josef and Emilie Marek came to Six Mile in 1884, it was a prairie without trees. bought land from the Phillips Investment Company. They built their barns and lived in them until they could build their home. They plowed the land with mules and horses . . . not an easy job in the black gumbo soil. The Six Mile area was originally named Marekville, after Josef who was an important part of the community. The name was later changed to Royal, and later to Six Mile. (A spring on Ernest Kabela’s land was six miles from Port Lavaca.) Josef was very talented. Not only was he a farmer, he was a very good tailor and made suits for many people. One of his grandchildren stated that he was a perfectionist and would play the trumpet while his granddaughter pumped the treadle sewing machine, and they had to keep time to his playing. He was also an excellent carpenter. When their first daughter, Anna, married in 1904, there was a big celebration with a beer keg, as was the custom. Not only did the guests enjoy it, but the chickens drank from the dripping spout and began stumbling all over the
yard. In 1934, in honor of Josef and Emilie’s 50th anniversary, their children arranged a surprise party at the SPJST hall. The first SPJST hall was built on barrels of concrete that were salvaged from a barge that was sunk at Indianola. A number of people went there and somehow got the 600-pound barrels of cement and used them as blocks to build on. Unfortunately, there was no reinforcement in the cement and they did not last very long. The lumber from the barge was also salvaged and was very sturdy. The hall was a great community meeting place, holding dances and Easter egg hunts. “For it is in giving that we receive.” St. Francis of Assisi. Lodge 177, Academy reports on August meeting The regular meeting of SPJST Lodge 177, Academy was called to order at 5:27 p.m. on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, by President Bill Hutka. All officers were present. Everyone stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Minutes from the previous meeting were approved as presented. Committee reports were presented. New Business Shirley and Don McCrea told members about going to the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple to hear the Czech author who recently visited Temple. It was an outstanding presentation, and they learned so much about how World War II impacted Czech people. It was also discussed that there will be Czech language mini workshops on Wednesday, August 15 and Wednesday, August 22 at the Czech Heritage Museum. What an opportunity to learn more about Czech heritage! FAC Bill Hutka reported on the upcoming Corpus Christi Getaway on the August 10 weekend. He also reminded everyone about the District Two Fall Fun Day at Lodge 47, Seaton as well as the upcoming Westfest in September in West. Bill further discussed the Rules of Decorum for a lodge meeting, which was very informative. Fort Worth Friendship Club The members of the Friendship Club met Wednesday, August 1, 2018, for their monthly meeting and social. The meeting was called to order by President Barbara Becknell. Our guest was Betty Carter. Everyone was welcomed, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. Since we were having a guest speaker and the fact that some members arrived a few minutes late due to road construction on both sides of the church, it was voted to dispense with the reading of the minutes from the last meeting. (I, myself drove around and saw lots of new scenery before finding the church.) Treasurer Margaret Sears presented the financial report which was approved as presented. Margaret reported a memorial donation was made to St. Thomas Church for masses for Aggie Reznicek. A donation to the Alzheimer’s Association will be made in memory of Paula Arsenault, and a donation will be made to have masses said for Pauline Walker. Lola Taylor had resigned as vice president since she will be unable to attend the meetings in the coming months, and the president asked for a volunteer to fill the position. (Okay, ladies, someone needs to volunteer.) Rose Ann Spann also sent word that since she has not been able to attend recent meetings, she was resigning as historian. Both Barbara and Margaret suggested keeping a notebook of the articles Libbie writes each month for the Vestnik. Libbie will prepare a notebook of all the 2018 articles. Sunshine Person Darlene Tompkins reported sending get well cards to Rose Ann and Jimmy Spann, and Bill Moncrief. A card will be sent to Marilynn Llewellyn who is having knee surgery. Get well wishes go out to all of you.
President Barbara reported the St. Thomas Food Pantry which was an “emergency food pantry” has closed, and we no longer will support this cause. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to August celebrants Betty Krenek, Pat McWilliams, and Margaret Sears. May you all have many more! We had one door prize which was won by Lupe Esparza. The first 50/50 dollar game was won by Margaret Laymance with Helen Skrasek being the winner of the second game. Congratulations to all the lucky winners. Adele and Harold Strand were missed at the meeting, but at a past meeting, Adele brought a sauerkraut salad for lunch which so many members enjoyed and wanted the recipe. Adele called me that she wrote out the recipe, made copies, and asked me to stop by to pick them up to give out. Everyone sends their thanks to you, Adele. We hope to see you and Harold at the next
meeting! Helen Skrasek announced that her son Gary and daughter-in-law Debbie will be celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary on August 11. They will celebrate with a gathering of family members on the 18th. Congratulations, Gary and Debbie! August hostesses Margaret Laymance and Sherrill Gustavson were thanked for their splendid job, and they also picked up the chicken. Tables were decorated in bright colors with various sea objects. Our theme was a beach scene, and we did have several to wear their tropical shirts. The September meeting was discussed with Lupe Esparza and Marie Keller being the designated hostesses with Alma Feil picking up the chicken. The theme will be sports so wear your favorite team’s shirt, and everyone will decorate their own table in whatever you desire.

Our sympathies go out to Betty and Stanley Krenek and to our homebound member Betty Landsfeld on the death of Joe Rogers, brother-in-law to Betty Krenek and son-in-law to Betty Landsfeld. Betty Landsfeld’s sister-in-law, Agnes Landsfeld, also passed away recently in Ennis. May their souls rest in peace. Speaker Mattie Gibbs from the Fort Worth City Water Department spoke to us about recycling. She was most informative and entertaining. She said there are four types of items that should go into the recycle containers - paper, metal, glass, and plastic. The glass can be of any color, and if plastic, it must have the small triangle on the bottom with numbers only of one through seven. Mattie dumped a bunch of items on each table, and we were asked to say if each item went into the recycle or trash containers. Some of the items were tricky. We all received a prize - a pencil with the label “this pencil is made from paper.” She encouraged all that if an item is not for recycle, try to “repurpose” or “reuse” for something else. All enjoyed this presentation. Since Betty Landsfeld was having so much sadness recently, I drove over to Willow Park where she lives for a visit. We had the best time talking. There were some tears which I can certainly understand. Someone in Ennis keeps Betty informed on what is going on with the family. Betty sends her best wishes to everyone at the Friendship Club; she asked about the ones she knows. She still likes where she is now living and said she gets three meals each day which are always good. I asked her if she ever gets any klobases, sauerkraut, and dumplings, and she said, “I wish!” I am sad to report that my friend Joe Ehrenberger passed away on August 5, just two days after having his 94th birthday. He and Joyce, originally from Dallas, moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, to be close to their daughter. My sister Lil and I made lots of vacation trips together with them. I also traveled to lots of Sokol Slets with them in the United States and abroad, and we also did the Czech language classes in Prague a couple of times. I shall miss him. I am so glad that Joyce was able to come to Texas for a visit in June. The next meeting will be Wednesday, September 5. Don’t forget to dress in your favorite sports outfit, bring a side dish for lunch, and bring some sort of decorations for your table - anything goes! So Until, Keep Smiling! Marak homecoming church picnic set for September 9 SS Cyril and Methodius Church in Marak will hold its annual homecoming picnic on Sunday, September 9, 2018. The church is located seven miles northwest of Cameron on FM 2269. District One seeks “trunk-or-treat” hosts for October 21 fall fun day Dear District One Members, Save the date . . . the District One Fall Fun Day is Sunday, October 21, 2018, at Lodge 17, New Tabor Hall at 3 p.m. Youth and adults are encouraged to dress in Halloween costumes. One of the fun activities that we are planning is “trunk-or-treat.” We are looking for volunteers to host the trunk games and candy stops. Volunteers will decorate their vehicle’s trunk and fill it with candy and treats - or play a game, and youth will then walk by to receive

District Two Fall Fun Day this Sunday at Lodge 47, Seaton Dear District Two Youth Members, The Annual District Two Fall Fun Day will be held at Lodge 47, Seaton this Sunday, August 26, 2018. Registration of the youth and adult Christmas ornaments will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Rules can be found on page 37 of the 2018-2019 SPJST Youth Club Handbook or online at www.spjst.org. I do hope each of you - youth and adults - will show your talent. First place ornaments in each age category will be displayed on the SPJST Youth Christmas Tree at the Home Office. All youth participating will receive participation money along with the top three winners in each age category winning a monetary prize. A short business meeting will be held at 2 p.m. A drink ticket and game tickets will also be given to all in attendance. Those in attendance will be honored to meet and greet our 2018-2019 District Two Royalty Court - State King Nash Campbell of Lodge 24, Cyclone; Queen Brooke Newsom of Lodge 48, Beyersville; State Duke Tyson Bilbrey of Lodge 47, Seaton; and Duchess Tynlee Beckendorf of Lodge 182, Falls County. We are very proud of our royalty court and look forward to their representation of our district. A lot of fun things will be taking place on this day including a “sweet walk” (cakes, cookies, brownies, pies), adult and youth spinning wheels, guessing games, and more. The District Two Youth Club will be having a silent auction. We are asking each youth club to bring at least one item of $10 or more value. Each family or anyone interested in supporting the youth - we appreciate your support, also. Homemade items and food items are always welcome. There were so many compliments on all the YAD crafts entered this year. If you are not sure where to put your item or whether to keep it or not, why not donate it to the silent auction? And, all those sweet breads looked delicious! Not everyone who bid on them got to take one home. Why not make another one? I know I didn’t get one, but sure wanted one. Your items and bids will be appreciated. Proceeds will go toward Camp Kubena and the district youth fund. Lodge 30, Taiton youth wins first at State YAD I recently participated at State Youth Achievement Day (YAD) held in Temple. Although I did not place in sewing or photography, I enjoyed seeing my friends from camp and the festivities. I also participated in the special category competition in which we had to decorate a “thinking of you” card, and our group performed in group talent. Our group ended up receiving first place. Call for music essays and performances by Texas students 3rd International Festival of Czech Music College of Music, University of North Texas, Denton The 3rd University of North Texas International Festival of Czech Music, cosponsored by the Janáček Academy of Music (Brno) and Palacký University (Olomouc), will be held on the UNT campus during the last week of November 2018. The keynote speakers of the academic conference are expected to be Prof. Mgr. Jaroslav Miller, Rector of Palacký University and Farář Mgr. Jaroslav Křivánek of the Hussite Church, both in Olomouc, Czech Republic. Prof. Miller will speak on the events of 1918 and the formation of Czechoslovakia; Fr. Křivánek will speak on the formation of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church. Presentations by all speakers and performers, including those by Texas students, will be live-broadcast worldwide over the Internet. Paper and Music Competition As the home of the CEFT Dr. Frank J. and Hermine Hurta Kostohryz Residency in Czech Music and Culture and the Dr. Jim and Rose Bezdek Endowment Fund Celebrating Czech Music and Culture, the UNT College of Music is calling for Texas students to submit an essay on the topic of Czech music or a video (phone video OK) of their performance of a piece of music written by a Czech composer. UNT will provide the opportunity for Texas students – one in each of the categories below – to read their papers at the academic conference on Saturday, December 1; likewise, we will provide the opportunity for Texas students – one in each of these same categories – to perform a musical work written by a Czech composer.

Music Essay (one winner selected in each category) Level 1: 1st to 4th grade. Essay 2 page in length (hand-written, with optional handdrawings on page 2) on what it means to preserve one’s ethnic culture. Level 2: 5th to 8th grade. Essay 4 pages in length (double-spaced, typed, 12-point font with 1-inch margins) on the life and contributions of a particular Czech classical composer. Level 3: 9th to 12th grade. Essay 8 pages in length (double-spaced, typed, 12-point font with 1-inch margins) on a particular piece of music written by a Czech classical composer. Level 4: Undergraduate College. 8 pages in length (double-spaced, typed, 12-point font with 1-inch margins) on how a particular historical event – the Battle of White Mountain in 1620, the rise of “nationalism” in the 19th century, the formation of “Czechoslovakia” in 1918, WW2, the 1968 invasion, etc. – impacted a particular Czech classical composer’s life and work. Music Performance (one winner selected in each category) The work may be for solo piano, for piano four-hands, for solo instrument or voice accompanied by piano, or for small ensemble. The work must have been written by a Czech composer. Recognition Banquet and Opera Performance In addition to reading their essay or performing at the conference, each winner and one parent will be guests of the university to be recognized at the festival banquet on Saturday evening and then to attend that evening’s performance of Janáček’s Cunning Little Vixen by the UNT opera and orchestra; additional tickets to the banquet and opera performance will be available for purchase. A special rate for lodging at the Denton Conference Center will be available for our out-of-town visitors.
Judging Once received, all essays and videos will have identifying information removed before being forwarded to a panel of judges. Judges will see only the category for each entry (e.g., 1st to 4th grade). Deadline and Submission Submission deadline as a scanned paper or video file, sent as an attachment, is September 15, 2018. Czech choir seeks performance venues I’m writing on behalf of group of a singing man choir from Valtice, Czech Republic. Because we know very well Mr. Bill and Mrs. Effie Rosene from Czech Cultural Center Houston, we have come up with an idea of a trip to the United States - Texas. Our dear friends Rosene are organizing for our American compatriots various performances of Czech musicians and groups. With our choir accompanied by cymbal music, we would like to contribute to enjoy cultural activities in Texas. We would like to ask you for help to arrange performances in such Czech communities in Texas as Czech Cultural Center Houston is. We know there is many of them all around Texas as Frýdek, Praha, Sokol Texas, we can have one performance per day nearby Houston during one week stay.

SS Cyril and Methodius Church Bazaar Sept. 2 in Granger SS Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church will hold its annual parish bazaar on Sunday, September 2, 2018, at SSCM Parish Hall, 500 West Davilla in Granger, Texas. Letní schůze nadace byla užitečná Česky píšící dopisovatel Jan Vaculík Pravidelná ětvrtletní schůze České vzdělávací nadace státu Texasu se konala dne 4. srpna 2018 v budově musea manželů Bushových starších v College Station, Tx. v jedné z učeben. Museum je uspořádáno tak, že vchod tvoří rozsáhlá rotunda a k ní je přilehlá další budova, kde jsou umístěny památky na život manželů Bushových a ostatní maličkosti, které obyčejně v museu bývají. Manželka Barbara nedávno zemřela. Předseda Sboru ředitelů James Sassín zahájil schůzi, vedl nás k přísaze vlajce a republice, pro kteru stojí. V úvodu naší schůze se předseda Sassín pomodlil za úspěch schůze. Přivítal všechny přítomné ředitele a vyzval profesorku Theresu Mazákovou, aby pronesla několik slov o jejím nedávném zájezdu do Jihoafrické republiky. Pak předseda Sassín věnoval veškerou pozornost pořadu schůze. Přečetl za nepřítomného tajemníka Paula Hlavinky zápis z dubnové schůze a s malými opravami byl přijat tak, jak byl čten. Tajemník Paul Hlavinka byl na zájezdě v Čechii a poslal stručný popis konference SVU a dobrý dojem na něj učinil referát Davida Chrousta, člena a ředitele naší nadace, který promluvil o ohlasu ruských učenců, kteří psali o České republice a popsal elektronickou činnost ruské inteligence. David upozornil na zdroje informací nejen v ruštině, ale i v angličtině, němčině a jiných jazycích a jeho výklad přinesl mnoho zajímavých a užitečných zdrojů pro odborníky a také pro obyčejného člověka. Následovala finanční zpráva naší finanční tajemnice Cindy Belknap a nadace je ochotna přijat jakoukoli podporu pro naši činnost. Nadace jako organisace pracuje na nových pravidlech přijímání příspěvků a naše nadace přijme s vděčností každý příspěvek v jakékoliv podobě. Po schválení nových pravidel budou mít naši dárci lepší přehled a možnosti využití příspěvků jako daňové úlevy, jak jsme činili dosud. Pište na její adresu: Cindy Belknap, 2520 Willing Ave., Ft. Worth, TX. 76110. Až budou pravidla schválena, pokusím se jejich význam vysvětlit pokud možno co nejsrozumitělněji. Základem je zákon, který uznává naši organisaci jako nevýdělečnou nadaci a proto veškeré příspěvky zaslané do naší pokladny jsou považovány za daňovou úlevu. Nyní se snažíme uvést i další podrobnosti do souladu s vládními
VĚSTNÍK nařízeními, abchom mohli kdykoliv uplatnit zákonné právo. Dnes jsou lidé opatrní a požadují dostatek právní záruky při předávání příspěvků nadaci. Předseda Sboru ředitelů James Sassín promluvil o budoucnosti naší nadace. Jmenoval několik ředitelů do strategického výboru, který by měl naplánovat budoucí činnost nadace. Členy a členkami výboru je Ray Lenárt, Roger Kolář, Lynette Urbanovská, John Šefčík, Woody Smith, Brian Vaníček, Amy Juřica Hinnant a Donnie Viktorík, kteří po dvě soboty věnovali čas a energii k vytvoření nové strategie. Jim patří také náš dík za oběti, které věnovali této práci. Výbor vypracoval několik významných bodů ke zlepšení naší činnosti a nadace by měla jejich uskutečnění schválit. V této souvilosti výbor přednesl první návrh, kterým je další pokračování podpory dosavadních programů na Texaské universitě v Austinu, Tx., Severotexaské universitě v Dentonu, Tx., Texaské A and M universitě v College Station, Tx. s důrazem na jejich nejlepší využití a zasloužerný úspěch. Druhý návrh souvisí s větší známostí naší nadace v naší krajanské veřejnosti v Texasu a i po celém světě. Máme rozšířit znalost nadace v elektronickém světě, podporovat činnost příbuzných organisací a rozvíjet vztahy mezi Texasem a Českou republikou. Třetím bodem je rozšíření naší činnosti v oblasi kultury, dědictví, jazyka a jídla, podporovat zakládání museí v Texasu, které by potvrzovaly naši historii v Texasu a letní kursy v České republice o naší historii a kultuře. Čtvrtým bodem je vytvoření nového užitečného programu pro nižší university, podobně jako nyní pracuje jazykový kurs na Blinn College v Schulenburgu, Tx. Je nutno podotknout, že původní stanovy nadace ukazují, že nadace má
podporovat kohokoliv a jakoukoliv školu, která vytvoří program, který zachovává naši hitorii, jazyk a bohatou česko-texaskou kulturu. V této oblasti může nadace vykonat mnoho užitečného díla v Texasu. Tyto čtyři body byly schváleny řediteli a měly by být vodítkem pro další naši činnost. President nadace Woody Smith poznamenal, že je velmi spokojen a nadšen prací strategického výboru a je rád, že naše nadace se konečně dostává do správných kolejí. Jenom společnou prací dosáhne me významných úspěchů. Profesor Tom Sovík poslal písemnou zprávu o akcích na Severotexaské universitě a mimo jiné uvedl, že v listopadu bude představení Janáčkovy opery Příhody lišky Bystroušky. Děti z Dallaské české školy by měly účinkovat ve čtyřech představeních opery. Další akce jsou uvedeny na website university. Některé změny mohou nastat později a proto je nutno častěji sledovat tuto website. Pro naše krajany zařídil zlevněnou cenu v hotelích a proto je nutno si zamluvit pokoj ještě dnes. Dne 1. prosince promluví president Palackého university z Olomouce na Moravě ke stému výročí založení Československa. Kazatel husitské církve promluví o vytvoření husitské církve po První světové válce. Odpoledne bude banket v Convention center a ve půl osmé bude představení opery Příhody lišky Bystroušky Leoše Janáčka. V neděli 2. prosince profesor Sovík pojede se dvěma zpěváky a hráčem na čelo do kostela v Praze na odpolední představení Stabat Mater Antonína Dvořáka a společný zpěv vánočních koled může následat. A pak v úterý odpoledne odjede z Dentonu ve dvou osobních autech, s menším nákladním autem s kulisami a kostými a pianem a 8 zpěváky a zastaví se v College Station dne 4. prosince, v Ennisu 5. prosince, v

Austinu 6. prosince, v Templu/Belton 7. prosince a v Dallasu v sobotu 8. prosince s představeními opery Příhody lišky Bystroušky. Program je to velmi bohatý a rozmanitý a naše krajanská veřejnost si užije pěknou moravskou hudbu Leoše Janáčka a ocení hodnotu jeho tvorby. John Šefčík se stará o website naší nadace a během tohoto čtvrtletí přidal několik stránek se zprávou o možnostech se učit češtinu, na příklad na Blinn College anebo v České škole v Dallasu. Pak je možno se učit česky elektronicky na jejich website. Dalším přídavkem je výva dětem, aby napsaly eseje k nastávajícímu festivalu naší hudby v listopadu a prosinci na UNT. Website bude nutno neustále zlepšovat a měnit, aby všechny informace byly platné v daném čase a místě. Americky píšící dopisovatelka Lynette Urbanovský oznámila, že připravuje další číslo oběžníku k výroční schůzi v lednu 2019. Ředitel Clinton Machánn oznámil, že pracuje na řešení problémů se stipendiem pro Texaskou A and M universitu, aby příjezd nových kandidátů z moravských universit byl plynulý a bez obtíží. Návrh university o změně charakteru stipendia na studenta na návštěvě je pro universitu a pro naši nadaci stejně tak i pro rodinu Hlavinkovu přijatelnější, než se zprvu očekávalo. Po dokončení vyjednávání pak nadace oznámí universitám na Moravě změnu a vysvětlí výhody, které nové uspořádání poskytne studentům z Moravy. Theresie Waldsbergerová je kandidátkou na letošní termín na oddělení anglistiky na universitě. Nejdůležitějšími body naší schůze bylo schválení čtyř bodů týkajících se naší nasdace. Je nutno začít pracovat na universitách, kde poradci mnohdy nesprávně radí studentům, které předměty vybírat, musíme se spojit s jinými organisacemi, které mají stejné nebo podobné zájmy. Potřebujeme také pracovníky, kteří povedou nadaci do příštích let. Musíme najít schopné lidi, kteří pomohou uskutečnit plány a naděje nadace. Příští schůze má být 1. prosince 2018 v Dentonu,Tx. v novém středisku a další schůze bude 22. ledna 2019 jako výroční schůze na místě určeném později. Nadace se těší na hojnou účast, protože jsme dali do pořádku postup práce a nyní hodláme úspěšně pracovat pro blaho naší krajanské veřejnosti. —SPJST—

Dallas Czech Culture Society shares July meeting minutes The Dallas Czech Culture Society held its meeting on Wednesday, July 18, 2018, at 7 p.m. at Sokol Hall in Dallas. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Lynda Novak with a moment of silence for our departed members from the last meeting. Minutes were read by Lynda Novak from the last meeting. Correspondence was from Susan McKee. President James Macik was not present so the meeting was turned over to Vice President Bob Podhrasky. We started off with electing the 2018 officers. President James Macik,Vice President Bob Podhrasky, Secretary Lynda Novak, and Sarah Martin, and Treasurer Ray Lenart. Sarah made a motion to accept officers by acclamation, seconded by Nina Marcussen, and all members were all in favor. We stated planning for Heritage Day 2018 that is set for Sunday, October 28 to be held again at Sokol Dallas. There were lots of good ideas on how we can make the celebration a little more exciting than last year. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Czech history. On October 28, 1918, Czechs regained their independence. Looking over the Sokol schedule, we can or could decorate the day before as nothing is rented the night before. Nina had asked if everyone would try to see if they could find some old pictures back in the years for her to use as decorations. The sooner she gets them, the sooner she can have them enlarged and ready to hang along the walls. Beseda dancers were discussed. Lynda Novak said her circles of dancers are getting smaller, and she would get with David and Diane Liska from Ennis for they had four circles at National Polka Festival. They are continuing to teach beseda to more adults and children in the Ennis area. Lynda also said she would call Steffanie Becan about the little dancers, and see if they could perform again. A suggestion of having a slide show of the past celebrations and highlights of the 100 years would be our theme. Also having Maggie from West was a big hit last year, and we will check to see if she would do it again. It seemed like everyone enjoyed the Dallas Czech Orchestra, and we can have them play while everyone is entering in the morning as well as during the opening ceremony of flags and beseda. Another suggestion was to see if Laddie could get a few of his musical group bands together and have a jam session for 15 to 30 minutes . . . something like what he did back at the

Bob mentioned that the University of North Texas is having a music essay and performance contest by Texas-Czech students, and they needed our help in getting the word out. At the sequential, a yearbook was produced, and we all agreed that maybe we should do one for the centennial year celebration. It would be the size of an 8.5 by 11 book, and a full page was set for $125, half-page is $75, quarter page - $40, business card size - $25, and any well wishers are $10 per line. A live band was discussed, and Ray Lenart will see if he can get the Mikula band to play from 3 to 6 p.m. We also talked about the entrance fee and to keep it $5 per person, or if wearing your kroj, it would be free; also children ages 16 and under would be free of charge. Last year, our Society joined in with SPJST District Three’s fundraiser they had for Hurricanes Harvey/Irma Relief Fund. This year, we discussed having a silent auction to help fund our Society. When the Victoria Czechs say they are celebrating all things Czech, they mean it! Learn to play A Ja Sam, Julida Polka, “Prune Song”, and more. This class is for ages 8 to 100 at all levels – beginner to timid! Even intermediate players will learn a few tricks. Joe Pustka of Victoria, one of the founding members of this festival, will be teaching how to play the Czech card game known as tarok or taroky in Annex 3 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon and from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Due to tremendous success teaching youth to sing Czech songs at a recent Victoria Czech Society event, a youth Czech sing-along will again be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Youth ages 4 to 18 will learn to sing A Já Sam, “Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie,” and Nemelem - all traditional Czech folk songs. Texas Dance Hall Preservation to host oral history workshop for SPJST halls Sept. 29 in Temple Oral histories are a great way to capture your members’ recollections of people and events that made your lodge what it is today! We hope you’ll join us for this workshop or future workshops. An oral history workshop for SPJST lodges, with Texas historian Dan K. Utley, will be Saturday, September 29, 2018, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at SPJST Home Office, 520 North Main Street in Temple. The workshop will be followed by lunch and Q&A (questions and answers session). Texas Dance Hall Preservation and SPJST are working together to help lodges document their history and become eligible for the state historic tax credit program, which is open to all 501(c) nonprofit organizations, including fraternal lodge halls.
Buildings that are designated as Recorded Texas Historic Landmarks or listed on the National Register of Historic Places are eligible for the Texas State Historic Tax Credit Program, which can return up to 25 percent of qualifying rehabilitation expenses to lodges that spend at least $5,000 on hall renovation projects.
